LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT As president of Massachusetts College of Art and Design, I have the distinct honor of welcoming you to the 109th MassArt Fashion Show. Tonight, we celebrate the significant achievements of our seniors, juniors and sophomores in the Fashion Design Department. MASSART F O U N DAT I O N New venue, students and ideas combine to make this evening a night to celebrate fresh designs, innovation and discovery. Look closely at the names of these young designers because you are discovering remarkable talent before the wider design community. We are happy to have you with us this evening for the third annual Pre-Fashion Show Party and the 109th annual MassArt Fashion Show. As we combine the rich history of fashion design at MassArt with the cutting edge fashion of our students, we celebrate with you a city that is increasingly embracing new fashions. Let’s keep growing a vibrant fashion scene in Boston. As a national leader in art and design education, MassArt is committed to all the design disciplines, and is particularly fortunate to have a Fashion Design program that is without parallel. An evening like this one cannot happen without the talent and energy of individuals who are dedicated to providing the highest level of professional education and preparation for a creative career. We extend our deepest thanks to the Fashion Design faculty for sharing their expertise, inspiration, and love of fashion with the students whose designs we will enjoy this evening. We are also most grateful to the Pre-Fashion Show Party Host Committee, led by co-chairs Emma Calus and Ashley Karger who have played a crucial role in shaping the look and feel of this event and ensuring its financial success. This evening’s goal is to raise $150,000 that will allow the college to award deserving fashion design students muchneeded scholarships. To all of you who have made this event possible, behind the scenes and in the audience this evening, thank you for supporting the next generation of MassArt talent and success. Enjoy the show!

FAS H I O N D E S I G N AT M A S S A RT Fashion Design students at MassArt learn the processes, techniques, and tools needed to develop design concepts across formats—2D and 3D designs, digital and hand drawings, flat patterns, and fully constructed garments—while developing the critical skills they need to evolve into a versatile design professional. Beyond the basics of fashion design, students learn the industry fundamentals of apparel manufacturing, and production procedures. The fashion department’s goals are to support personal development in fashion design by emphasizing concept driven fashion, innovation and presentation. Through creative process, industry practice, technical competency and craft, students build the knowledge and critical thinking needed to become a versatile fashion designer. Our faculty offers invaluable instruction in key tenets of design, as well as a broader perspective on the history of fashion, and how cultural and aesthetic trends emerge and adapt. Our classrooms and studios are geared toward collaboration and thoughtful critique— each of which will be expected of students during their time in the program. In addition to studio and classroom experience, students are presented opportunities for internships, international travel and industry collaborations. Through their MassArt learning experiences, students develop the skills and training they need to convey their individual design viewpoint, and to craft a portfolio of work that embodies that vision.

E I L E E N F I S H E R / M A S S A RT C O L L A B O R AT I O N MassArt’s Sustainable Fashion class joined with Eileen Fisher again to collaborate on an up-cycle design challenge. Students created newly designed garments from gently used items from Eileen Fisher. The thoughtful designs were presented and enjoyed during an evening reception in the Eileen Fisher store in October 2015.

“Once I went to the Eileen Fisher store, my mind was opened to a new idea of fashion. Fashion with purpose. Clothes were no longer a way to just look stylish and on trend and to be easily replaced between seasons. They were a way to send a much deeper message.” — MADELINE ARPIN

“ Melissa is an absolute pleasure to have as a part of our team. Her attention to detail, commitment to quality and eagerness to learn and master her skill have exceeded my expectations.”

“ Afshan is very professional and very much a team worker, and tries her hand at things that are initially hard to do. We had to cut and sew 200 hundred scarves that look perfect in one week. She really thought about how to do that and did a good job.”
