But first, let’s start with how every good story should. At the very beginning.

The Costa Coffee story began back in 1971 when Sergio and Bruno arrived in London with a burning desire to make great tasting coffee a part of everyday life.

Setting up a small roastery in Fenchurch Street, they committed to crafting the finest quality coffee.

It was here the Costa brothers blind-tested 112 variations of coffee before they tasted one good enough to be our signature blend. They named it ‘Mocha Italia’ and it remains our signature blend to this day.

The discovery of coffee

There are several tales of how coffee was first ly lively after feeding on the ripe berries from a bush later known as an Arabica bush. Kaldi tried the berries himself and started to feel just as uplifted.

Local monks quickly learned of Kaldi’s discovery and tried the berries for themselves. They found that the unusual berries helped them stay awake and energized during long periods of prayer. And they also discovered that if they crushed and infused the ‘magical’ berries with cold water, they could enjoy them as a drink.

It wasn’t until much later, between 1000AD and 1200AD, that people tried roasting and crushing the seeds of the coffee cherry (the ‘magic’ berries) and infusing them with hot water. It made a delicious drink, more like the coffee of today.

Inspiring the world to love great coffee

We have always worked hard to bring new coffee experiences to our customers. From the opening of the brothers’ first coffee boutique in the 1980s, innovation has flowed through every aspect and era of Costa Coffee.

We were the first coffee providers in London serving our coffee in porcelain cups; we were the first coffee shop chain to introduce the Flat White in the UK and, with our Express machines, we were the first to bring coffee shop quality coffee to convenience stores and roadsides across the UK.
