Q&A CoffeeTalk Jazz Magazine 46

With

Lil’ Maceo

Q. Is Music therapeutic for you? 100%. Not only is it therapeutic it’s essential. I can’t imagine my life without music in it. I’m not even talking about just playing music I mean like music in general every major milestone in my life has a soundtrack to it. Everyone has a song that’s tied to something major in their life. The world would be a dark miserable place without music. Q. At what age did you realize you had a gift to play, write and understand music? I started playing very late in life. I was 18 but my mom tried to push me to play an instrument back in elementary school, but I was always an athlete and an artist. I used to draw and airbrush I had no interest in music though my mom tried to push me to play anything. So, I went through my entire school career taking art classes and in the great state of New York I found out two weeks before my graduation that even though I passed all of my exams and I passed everything I didn’t meet New York State requirements to graduate because I didn’t take music for at least one semester.

different in my career if I had the patience and understanding to know that this is a business and as such you have to operate like it’s a business. It’s very easy to get caught up and forget that this is a business because a lot of people don’t treat us like we’re professionals you know musicians are the only people who non-musicians feel like this is a hobby and don’t respect the fact that we put in hours and years of our lives perfecting our trade going to school and investing money, just like any other Professional.

So if you can believe it I got left back for music and I had to take music class and instead of giving me theory they gave me band and I was forced to learn to play an instrument and what’s even funnier is the instrument that I chose was the tuba because it was marching band and besides the drums (which were all taken already) The only other instrument I knew was the Tuba from watching Bugs Bunny and the Band Teacher was like “Man you don’t look like a tuba player, here take this is a Saxophone” and the rest is history. Q. How important is it to understand the business side of music? As artists, we often get caught up in our emotions and forget that it’s called music “business”. I was signed to a developmental deal back in the early 2000s and I wish I knew then what I know now, I believe things would be

Non-musicians don’t understand and see what goes on behind the scenes they just think we show up and jam together and that’s the end of it. they don’t think about all of the business contracts l, the travel, and everything else that goes in. I log so many miles in my vehicle or in the air that it’s insane I’m exhausted all the time it’s not easy I mean if it was easy everybody would do it. It’s almost insulting when a promoter or an agency called you up for a party or something and they want to immediately haggle you about your money whereas if I was a doctor or a lawyer they wouldn’t even attempt to haggle me “you know Doc I know that you charge $10,000 for this heart surgery but could you do it for $1000” which doesn’t happen only two musicians. Another thing I should mention as far as the business goes is that nobody

can do this alone you have to have a great team of people around you. I have the most amazing team that any person could have hoped for from my manager Tyron of TSeniormanagement to my hairstylist Kiana from Hairdyeherez my photographers Rick and Steve, of Rick Day Photography, my videographer Isaac of Masterclipz, my social media managers Amy and her crew. My street team and label Dolores and her amazing crew at Stone Street Entertainment. It takes a lot of cogs to make a machine go and I tell young artists this all the time surround yourself with an amazing team. You can’t do it alone. Q. Tell us two things we don’t know about you? For example, do you like sports? Do you have a hidden talent? Hidden talents

CoffeeTalk Jazz Magazine 49

well as I mentioned earlier, I can draw, and I think the second would be that I’m actually a visual effects artist and I’ve worked on some pretty notable things that I’m sure all of my fans have seen, and they have no idea that I was one of the people working on it. One other thing that I like to drop on people that people who knew me from back in the day know but I’m sure none of my fans know is that I also used to be a professional wrestler. Q. You’re a world-class musician, what impresses you most about a well-trained musician? What impresses me most about a well-trained Musician is his or her ability to relate to the audience. Often times musicians find themselves playing for other musicians to get the accolades of other musicians and totally bypass the people who are actually paying to see them I like it when musicians speak and relate and include the audience no matter how talented you are the average Joe doesn’t understand the language they understand how it makes them feel and I am a fan of people who play to the people.

CoffeeTalk Jazz Magazine 50

Q. Let’s take a page from the movie Back to the future. If you could go back and take a page from your past is there anything or experience, you’d change about your life? If I could go back in time, I wouldn’t change anything. I would do it all exactly the same. I’m a firm believer in everything happens for a reason or as my manager Tyron often says “it’s a teachable moment” you learn from the good and the bad and I always take something from every experience that I had and I think that all of that has made me the artist and musician that I am today and I’m appreciative of the trials and tribulations that I went through to get here. So, I wouldn’t change anything. Q. You’ve had an opportunity to experience various cultures while traveling. If you could settle into a new country, where do you see yourself? If I had a chance to settle down anywhere in the world out of all the places that I’ve been that’s pretty easy Japan hands down I love Japan and Japan loves me it’s like New York without the attitude I love it.

Q. Prior to hitting the stage for a live performance do you have any rituals that get you ready? Pre-show rituals, yes, I do some breathing exercises, and I do some stretching. I do finger exercises wrist warmups and drink bottled water to make sure I’m hydrated. I also never let people see what I’m going to wear on stage until it’s time for me to go on stage so if you’ve ever been to my show you know that the band always plays a song or two before I come out that’s so I can change my clothes listen to the sound make sure anything sounds properly and get ready to hit the stage and look good doing it. Q. There’s a lot of noise on the music highway. How did you find your voice among all the sax players? That’s a great question I was told a story most recently one of my peers was walking around in the city I was playing in Central Park, and he said to me “hey man I heard the socks, and I immediately knew it was you, so I came over“ that’s probably the greatest compliment I’ve ever got. I say to people all the time “I’m not the best Saxophonist out there, but I have a thing that’s my own and I’m the best at it” I strive to be the best version of myself and I don’t want to be like anybody else, I want to be like me that’s why I don’t really fit the mold even my style of music. It’s tough because pop clubs won’t book me because it’s instrumental and jazz clubs won’t book me because it’s too pop, so I find myself in this weird space trying to make myself fit. I can honestly say I’m one of those artists that either you really like me or you really hate me there’s no middle ground LOL.

where he’s not the typical jazz Sax Player he has a thing and it’s his and it’s no mistake and when you hear it you know it’s Maceo, so I learned a lot from Maceo which is why he is my mentor. Secondly, hands-down was Prince. I had the opportunity to talk and pick the brain of this legitimate musical genius and that is something that I would never trade for anything in the world I appreciate the time I had with Prince, though it was brief, I learned a whole lot on how to be a better business person how to be a better musician how to find my own voice I miss him so much. And if it had to be someone, I haven’t already met I would say, Michael Jackson. When I watch Michael Jackson, I instantly realize that I’m not working hard enough no matter how tired I am and how much I feel like I do compared to Michael it’s just not enough. I would’ve loved the opportunity to sit down and pick his brain and figure out what drives him and what keeps him motivated to keep pushing himself the way he did I regret that I never got to see Michael live I mean I’ve seen all the greats Prince, Janet, Stevie, Diana, etc. I’ve seen them all live but never got to see Michael and I regret that.

Q. If you could sit down and have steaming HOT with any musician past or present. Who would it be and why? That’s actually happened several times now. Firstly, would be Maceo Parker which I’ve had several opportunities to hang out with and talk to. I was curious because I feel like Maceo, and I share similar experiences

Tord Gustavsen: piano, electronics; Steinar Raknes: double bass, electronics; Jarle Vespestad: drums

T

ord Gustavsen’s album Opening develops the traits and styles explored on his earlier works, while introducing a broader spectrum of suppleness and a transformed sense of interplay to the trio’s repertory. It is the first Gustavsen Trio recording with Steinar Raknes on bass and the newcomer feels quite at home supporting his colleagues in the deep end, settling in quickly between Tord’s refined chordal studies and Jarle Vespestad’s delicate stick- and brushwork. There’s a particularly striking openness to the music, marked by spacious improvisations and a tendency to reveal the secrets and melodies at their own pace. “The urge for saying something, be it abstract or lyrical, has to come from within,” Tord reasons. “During the recording of the album it felt better to do the breathing first, open up the soundscape in more organic ways and let the melody enter when it comes naturally.“ Multiple causes may account for the shift in temperament on Opening – the change in lineup certainly being one of them. Bassist Steinar Raknes establishes a firm counterpoint in the music. “He’s an extroverted bass player, who likes to take center stage, while also being an incredibly supportive and humble accompanist, so he moves very swiftly between background, collective and soloist roles.” An ideal counterbalance to the variable basslines, Jarle’s percussive rumination acts as a mediator, guiding his fellow musicians through alternating straight-ahead and rubato passages. Here more than ever Tord dwells on minuscule fragments, brief chord chains and scarce hints of motifs, developing the material patiently: “It’s something I’ve been doing a lot in solo concerts. Having themes just appear out of the dark and disappearing back into a shady undercurrent…”

Q&A CoffeeTalk Jazz Magazine 70

With

Micah Gaugh

The music is meditative, trancends time and feels very celestial. I could talk. Q. Do you think that people look to music to give them hope? Music has definitly given me hope, I have staked my whole life and career on the creation of music. I started playing piano at age 4 and live my life in such a way that I can leave work or my place of residence at anytime to pursue music. I have always had faith and hope in my life because music is always there for me, it is an invisible force that heals, excites, warms, calms, nourishes... which are the aspects that define hope. Q.When did you fall in love with music? The first song that I ever remember hearing on the record player was Sleep Walk by Santo and Johnny, I remember that the guitar was very dreamy and must have listened to it about 5 more times being careful not to scratch the record, I must have been 4 years old. I also was told by my parents that at church as a baby I would sing along with the congregation and stop when they did, so I believe that I have always loved music since even before I could talk. Q. Who is your dream collaboration? Stevie Wonder. Making a Soul Opera would be amazing, a chance to watch his process would be the biggest thrill of the experience. Stevie has always had such rich chord structures and also unprecedented sounds such as the baby in the bath tub in ‘Isn’t She Lovely’. It is as if the song becomes a movie at the end bringing the listener closer to the feeling that Stevie wants to portray through his lyrics. Q.Which period of music history speaks to you and why? I am very attracted to the serial composers of the early 19th Century, Schoenburg, Webern, Berg. Pierrot Lunaire by Debussy also debuted around this time period and the music is very much like walking through a strange forest of sound.

Q. How important is it to continue to educate yourself about the business of music? The music business is ever changing, knowing the ins and outs globally is crucial. In the past record companies promoted, funded and basically took care of the musician. As of late it is up to the individual to insure their own success so the more education the better they will do. Q. When interviewing a potential producer for your project. What’s your deliberation process for selecting which producer you’ll use on each track? In the past I have chosen producers from musicians that I have played with or been in a band with. lately, I have had hip hop producers Torrin McBynum (Yaggfu Front) and Carlos Bess (Wutang) send me their more jazz- tinged hip hop so I have been working on a couple of albums featuring their tracks. Q. If you could sit down and have steaming hot Coffee with any musician from the past who would it be and why? Duke Ellington. He’s a Duke having coffee with royalty is always a good thing and I can only imagine the amount of stories that he could tell based on the multiple characters in his band, that meeting could take a couple of days to get through.

GIFT OF MUSIC FOUNDATION Instrument Donation Program Donated musical instruments drive many of the things we do at The Gift of Music Foundation.

T

he Sara J. Miller Gift of Music Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to creating greater accessibility to music programs, instruments, teachers, and the overall benefits of music education. It is our mission and passion to provide music enrichment opportunities for youth in our neighborhood. We refer to the endeavor as “the worthy challenge” with joyful rewards.

CoffeeTalk Jazz Magazine 72

SJM Gift of Music Foundation takes arts education and music back to school. Founded in 2009 as a response to an ongoing nationwide decline of funding and lack of prioritization for music education, our organization is diligently working to ensure access to music for the country’s at-risk youths. We do this by forming critical partnerships with music teachers, public schools and organizations to reinforce our core belief that music matters!

Through our foundation we are fully committed to arts education in schools. This program was started to assist in replacing music classes that have been eliminated by public schools. Studies have proven that students who learn music benefit in many other ways during this essential age window in a child’s overall development.

As school budgets are stretched thin and arts-based programs are often the first to be eliminated or downsized, we believe it is a major priority to take action to keep music education in our schools. Our mission and passion are to bring the transformative power of the arts education back to schools. We choose to educate and inspire the next generation of musicians through the Sara J. Bass Gift of Music Foundation. Donate an Instrument Musical Instruments are the lifeblood of our mission. If you have a musical instrument of any type that is no longer being used, donate it to The Gift of Music Foundation. We’ll ensure it contributes to our efforts to provide instruments to kids who may not otherwise be able to afford them. Email: CoffeeTalkJazzRadio@msn.com

Increases in cognitive and social skills are real. Students who learn music frequently perform better in academic areas and in the growth of crucial life skills.

A Novel Idea Book in Bloom Just like we’ve been waiting for those springtime buds to emerge from the earth, we’ve been eagerly anticipating the latest books of the season. Check out these literary picks that have scored spots on our shelves. “TRACY FLICK CAN’T WIN” BY TOM PERROTTA | SCRIBNER Tom Perrotta’s follow-up to the memorable “Election” (the movie version starred Reese Witherspoon in the iconic role) reintroduces us to Tracy Flick, now in mid-life. An assistant high school principal in a New Jersey suburb, Tracy is on the brink of a much-anticipated promotion. But when she is asked to serve on the committee to elect members of the school’s Hall of Fame, a former school quarterback emerges as a questionable candidate and brings up bad memories for her. As high school politics rears its ugly head for her once more, Tracy reflects on events and figures in her past that still leave her unfulfilled. Doesn’t she deserve more after all this time?

No word yet on a movie adaptation, but we’re hopeful there will be one with Reese Witherspoon starring once again.
