Free Lunchtime Concerts at The Bridgewater Hall in 2019 Escape from the bustle of the city and relax with our series of free, informal concerts. Enjoy a bite to eat or simply sit back and enjoy a mix of classical, acoustic, contemporary and world music.


Mento-B & the Jamaica Folk Ensemble

Welcome to A Little Bite Music, our series of free, informal performances at The Bridgewater Hall running from May to September. The programme presents a diverse range of classical, contemporary and world music, with an emphasis on local, emerging artists of all ages. Performances run from 12.45–1.30pm and are free to attend.

Thursday 9 May 12.45pm Stalls Foyer Mento-B plays upbeat and humorous music including mento, calypso, and reggae. He appears today with the Manchester-based Jamaica Folk Ensemble which was established in the 1980s to promote and maintain Jamaican cultural heritage. Free, non-ticketed event

For events in the Barbirolli Room, advance booking is highly recommended.

Manchester Jazz Collective Friday 3 May 12.45pm Barbirolli Room The Manchester Jazz Collective is a group of ten northern musicians who prioritise the creation and promotion of original large scale jazz compositions. They create a dynamic and engaging live experience. Book Tickets

Artephis Tuesday 14 May 12.45pm Stalls Foyer Contemporary jazz-rock quintet, Artephis, comprises some of the North’s most creatively diverse young musicians. Expect to hear imaginative textures, explosive and sensitive grooves, and spirited melodies. Free, non-ticketed event

Manchester Vox is a vocal chamber ensemble comprised of singers who regularly perform with renowned organisations including Genesis Sixteen and the Hallé Chorus. The group’s repertoire ranges from Early Renaissance polyphony to contemporary commissions. Free, non-ticketed event

Music Makers in Concert Friday 24 May 12.45pm Barbirolli Room For the second year we have been working out in the community with young parents from Greater Manchester to develop new music for toddlers and babies. Join Sarah Atter and friends for a free performance of these new songs. Babies and children are very welcome at this family focused event. Book Tickets

Rakesh Joshi Friday 31 May 12.45pm Stalls Foyer Join accomplished musician and composer Rakesh Joshi on piano accompanied by Saleel Tambe on tabla for a concert of Indian classical raga and folk tunes. Free, non-ticketed event

Sam Jefferson Friday 7 June 1.15pm Stalls Foyer Guitarist and singer Sam Jefferson draws from jazz, blues and the folk storytelling tradition to create songs that bring a story to life. Sam will be joined by Ruth Owens, Chris Terepin and Matt Steady. Free, non-ticketed event

Musicians from Chetham’s School of Music Friday 14 June 12.45pm Stalls Foyer Once again we’re delighted to welcome talented musicians from Chetham’s School of Music to perform as part of A Little Bite Music. This year is especially important for Chetham’s as the school celebrates its 50th birthday. Free, non-ticketed event

Nishla Smith is a Manchesterbased jazz singer/songwriter. Her original work has been featured on BBC 3 In Tune and she has recently completed a residency at The Sage Gateshead and been part of Manchester Jazz Festival’s Hothouse talent programme. Nishla will be joined by Tom Harris on piano. Free, non-ticketed event

Amid the Mirk Over the Irk: When Irish meets Klezmer Friday 12 July 12.45pm Stalls Foyer An imagined musical meeting of two of Manchester’s prominent immigrant communities: the Irish (in Angel Meadow) and the Jewish (in Red Bank). Traditional folk tunes, new compositions, intriguing fusions, and spoken word evoke the confluence of cultures across the banks of the River Irk. Created by Richard Fay and Co- Produced by Richard Fay and Dan Mawson. Free, non-ticketed event

Marco Woolf writes delicate, introspective songs. He has developed a reputation for being a storyteller and often builds narrative around his music, while his songs are atmospheric with lyrics full of imagery. Free, non-ticketed event.

Music for the Mind & Soul Featuring Jonathan Mayer & Kousic Sen Friday 13 September 12.45pm Barbirolli Room Sitarist and composer Jonathan Mayer has performed across a variety of genres playing with artists including Kathryn Tickell, Kuljit Bhamra, John Wilson, Bombay Dub Orchestra, and Sir Paul McCartney. He has composed extensively for many genres from jazz and fusion to Indian and symphonic writing. His works have been performed and commissioned by The London Philharmonic Orchestra, Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra, Docklands Sinfonia, Erich Gruenburg, Joji Hattori, and his father’s band Indo-Jazz Fusions. Jonathan will be accompanied by renowned tabla player and Milapfest Artist in Residence Kousic Sen. Book Tickets

A Little Bite Music is funded by The Bridgewater Hall, apart from the concert on Friday 24 May which is funded by The Bridgewater Hall Community Education Trust (Registered Charity 1058495). There will be a collection for The Bridgewater Hall Community Education Trust at the end of each performance and we thank all our donors for their generous contributions.

No ticket is required for performances in the Stalls Foyer, although we recommend arriving in good time to avoid disappointment. Performances in the Barbirolli Room are also free to attend, but you will require a ticket, for which advance purchase is highly recommended and, due to limited capacity, you must arrive by 12.30pm to guarantee admission.

Want to beat the rush hour? Why not join us for our Rush Hour Social; an informal series of free acoustic gigs with performers from in and around Greater Manchester. The bar will be open so join us for a drink and miss the rush hour. Performances start at 5.30pm last around an hour and are free to attend – no need to book. Check our website for more details.
