The Bridgewater Hall AUTUMN 2017 The Bridgewater Hall Celebrates 21 Years of Making Music! I am delighted to take this opportunity to invite you to read through this our special 21st Birthday edition of the Autumn brochure for 2017. For those who have been attending The Bridgewater Hall since its opening in September 1996 you will know how important this beautiful venue has become in the cultural landscape of Manchester and the United Kingdom. As one who was recently privileged to travel from abroad in order to take up my role as Chief Executive, I can testify to the important standing The Bridgewater Hall has gained within the international touring circuit and community. The venue has established itself as a performing stage of preference for the world’s most renowned artists and ensembles, representing many different musical genres from across the world. As a venue for orchestral and classical repertoire (for which it is most acclaimed) its acoustics are of the finest order – as is its reputation overall. I do hope we will see you at one of the many wonderful performances on offer within this season and the many seasons to follow over the next 21 years. Andrew Bolt Chief Executive The Bridgewater Hall
1
On 11 September 1996, The Bridgewater Hall first opened its doors to the public. The Hallé gave the first of three concerts under their then Music Director, Kent Nagano, while the first visiting orchestra was the Chicago Symphony conducted by Daniel Barenboim, which appeared on 14 September. The BBC Philharmonic mounted a performance of Berlioz’s huge Requiem Mass with massed choirs later in the month and, not long afterwards The Hallé also presented Mahler’s mighty Eighth Symphony. The Hall’s third resident orchestra, Manchester Camerata, also gave a rousing performance of Beethoven’s Ninth. Musical life in Manchester had entered a new phase marked by rising standards, increased ambition and an enhanced national and international profile. But, most importantly, there would now be an unprecedented level of co-operation among the regular performers at the Hall.
Elbow & the Hallé
The new venue brought the return of international orchestras and major recitalists back to Manchester for the first time in 30 years. There were more regular broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, sometimes several in a week. The landmark nature of the building catalysed the regeneration of the southern gateway to the city centre through the construction of residential accommodation, prime office space, restaurants, pubs and hotels. Later, the Hall developed a reputation as a venue for other kinds of musical performance; world music, jazz, folk, rock and pop, while continuing to be a community venue used by schools, charities and other local promoters.
of corporate and charity events throughout the year, the Hall continues to connect successfully with its immediate communities. All of this makes The Bridgewater Hall one of Manchester’s most vibrant cultural institutions, combining good business practice with high artistic values. To mark this exciting moment in the Hall’s history, we have chosen a sequence of events between September and November 2017 which reflect the diversity of the artistic and commercial partners who make The Bridgewater Hall a success. The programme includes rare and popular pieces from the classical repertoire, newly commissioned works, innovative educational experiences and a wide range of local, national and international performers across many genres of music. Look for the 21st Birthday ribbon in the following pages. The Bridgewater Hall was built for everyone – to celebrate the rich and varied musical life of Manchester with its unique traditions and striking contemporary scene. We hope that this selection of events will remind the many millions who have passed through the Hall’s doors over the last two decades that they have access to a world-class space for world-class music.
The success of The Bridgewater Hall is in no small part due to the quality of its acoustics and public spaces, making it the preeminent concert hall in the north of England and a hub for the cultural life of the city of Manchester and beyond. It has been cited in the national press as one of the top ten concert halls in the world, renowned for its diverse and excellent programme and for the quality of its customer and back-stage services. Through its learning and participation programmes, as well as hosting a range 2
