The Silver Donkey
A musical tale of bravery, war & love Sunday 8 March 3.00pm
UK premiere. A family performance based on the novel by Sonya Hartnett. Presented by The Bridgewater Hall and Chetham’s School of Music by Dean Bryant and Mathew Frank. In a village by the sea, each day is just the same... until two little girls discover a wounded soldier in the forest near their home in France. The soldier carries a precious object in his pocket; a tiny silver donkey, his lucky charm. As the trio share stories and hatch a daring plan to return the soldier to his family in England, they come to realise that the donkey is far more than an ornament – it is a symbol of the courage, loyalty and hope that will carry them all through the First World War. Staged by an ensemble cast of leading young performers, students and schoolchildren, this special production invites audiences to explore music, storytelling and memories of WW1. Recommended for adults and children aged 8+ £7 | Family ticket (up to 5 people) £20 Prices incl £2 booking fee* Book Tickets

Bernstein Overture, ‘Candide’ Bramwell Tovey Songs of the Paradise Saloon Dvořák Symphony No.9 (From the New World) The LPO returns with Classic FM Award Winner Alison Balsom for an evening of Americaninfluenced music. Alison performs British composer Bramwell Tovey’s evocative Songs of the Paradise Saloon for trumpet and orchestra. Adapted from Tovey’s opera The Inventor about a real life 19thcentury con artist, this unusual piece evokes a turn of the century American dive bar with its languid, jazz-infused music. Also on the programme is Dvořák’s much-loved Symphony No.9 (From the New World), heavily influenced by American folk music and including the famous Largo melody. £17 (incl £2 fee*)

Jamie’s Concert
Noriko Ogawa piano
Wednesday 22 April 11.00am Barbirolli Room A concert for the parents and carers of children with autism and other learning disabilities. Noriko Ogawa created Jamie’s Concerts in 2004, after lodging in the UK with Janice Mather and her son Jamie, who has severe autism. It became clear to Noriko that when Janice was calm Jamie was calmer too; and the seeds of Jamie’s Concerts were planted. ‘Jamie’s Concerts are designed to fit in with the busy timetables of parents and carers of children and adults with autism, to be a sanctuary of sorts. I wanted to offer a brief respite for hardworking people devoted to their children. To be able to relax and unwind is rare for many of those caring for children and adults with autism and it is my hope that these concerts offer a little calm, a chance to regroup then go forward with renewed spirit and strength.’ Noriko Ogawa £7 (incl £2 fee*)
