Friday 1 May Doors 7.30pm at Gorilla Whitworth St West This event will take place at Gorilla on Whitworth Street West (formerly The Green Room). Please note this show is all standing. ‘Nothing the world holds could match the love waiting for me in Mexico City’ Morrissey Expect to hear The Smiths classics and Morrissey’s solo songs as you’ve never heard them before. In Mexico Morrissey has always been a prophet with honour. His songs of love, loss and longing, with powerful imagery and metaphors have found a huge audience and chimed with generations raised on rancheras and mariachis and their singers who were not afraid to cross the line. Now the love can be returned, with a band made in Mexico City reinventing Morrissey’s songs south of the border. The first of the gang is Camilo Lara, the force inside Mexican Institute of Sound, who together with Sergio Mendoza (Orkesta Mendoza/Calexico), has put together a team of musical gunslingers from Mexico’s finest bands. Manchester International Festival

Mark Simpson The Immortal Mozart Requiem BBC Philharmonic Juanjo Mena conductor EXAUDI James Weeks EXAUDI director Manchester Chamber Choir Justin Doyle chorus master Saturday 4 July 7.30pm

Mark Simpson The Immortal An Oratorio Mozart Requiem Manchester International Festival presents the world première of The Immortal, a new work for orchestra and chorus by one of Britain’s brightest young composers, Mark Simpson. Inspired by John Gray’s book The Immortalization Commission, Simpson’s work explores the obsession with death that lies at the heart of the human experience. Drawing on the so-called ‘Cross Correspondences’, the extraordinary scripts of a series of séances undertaken in the first decades of the 20th century, this oratorio portrays the crisis of faith experienced by Frederick Myers, president of the Society of Psychical Research. Myers’ attempt to prove the existence of an afterlife was made more poignant by his own desperate hope of reuniting with the love of his life, whose untimely death haunted both his life and his work. Mark Simpson has worked with librettist Melanie Challenger to create The Immortal, which will be performed by the BBC Philharmonic, EXAUDI and Manchester Chamber Choir with solo baritone Mark Stone. The Immortal will be complemented by a performance of Mozart’s Requiem, the composer’s poignant and prescient anticipation of his own death. £36 | £30 | £26 | £21 | £16 Concessions £5 off, limited availability Book Tickets

Arvo Pärt Fratres; Stabat Mater; Como cierva Sedienta; Da Pacem Domine; Drei Hirtenkinder aus Fátima Arvo Pärt’s music, at once ancient and modern, seeks to communicate what the composer has described as ‘love for every note’. His music is utterly unique and of huge appeal with audiences internationally; today, Pärt is the most performed living composer in the world. Arvo Pärt, Manchester Camerata’s Music Director Gábor Takács-Nagy and MIF have curated a special evening of orchestral and choral works that perfectly demonstrates the overwhelmingly spiritual quality of his music. This one-off concert celebrates Pärt’s first visit to Manchester and the extraordinary project that brings together the work of Gerhard Richter and Arvo Pärt at the Whitworth as part of MIF15.
