Poulenc’s choral music was all written after 1936, when the tragic death of a close friend led to a religious epiphany. Its seriousness and intensity contrast with his more frivolous secular style, but these works make perfect companion pieces for the pure counterpoint of the great Renaissance master, Palestrina. Associate Artists, The Sixteen bring their own richly coloured sound and well-balanced voices to music that has both spiritual fervour and heavenly vision.

World première To mark 100 years since the birth of Harpurhey’s most famous son, MIF presents a special concert celebrating his words and music. Anthony Burgess may be best known as the writer of A Clockwork Orange, but he was also a prolific composer, writing more than 250 works in a multitude of styles. For MIF17, acclaimed composer Raymond Yiu has set text from six Burgess poems into The World Was Once All Miracle, a major symphonic song cycle given its world premiere tonight by brilliant baritone Roderick Williams and the BBC Philharmonic. The concert also features the first European performance of Burgess’s own Symphony in C, along with a work by a composer whose music has influenced Yiu, Burgess and every other symphonist of the last two centuries: Beethoven’s Symphony No.8. MIF17 is thrilled to present the world premiere of Last and First Men, an extraordinary new multimedia work by Oscar-nominated Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (Arrival, Sicario, Blade Runner 2049). Last and First Men combines music, film and Tilda Swinton’s elegiac narration into a poetic meditation on memory, loss and the idea of Utopia. For this world exclusive, the BBC Philharmonic will be performing Jóhannsson’s score live with the film. Based on the cult novel by British science fiction writer Olaf Stapledon, Last and First Men blurs the boundary between fiction and documentary. The work sets images of a futuristic yet decaying monumental landscape, beautifully filmed in 16mm black and white in the former Yugoslav republics, against Swinton’s narration and Jóhannsson’s mesmerising orchestral soundtrack. The result is a breathtaking requiem for the final human species in civilisation, and you can see and hear it first at MIF17. Post-show talk with Jóhann Jóhannsson (free with event ticket) £32 – £17
