The Anvil An Elegy for Peterloo BBC Philharmonic Ben Gernon conductor Christopher Purves baritone Kate Royal soprano BBC Singers Hallé Choir Hallé Youth Choir Hallé Ancoats Community Choir Sunday 7 July 6.00pm

World première. On 16 August 1819, more than 60,000 people flooded into St Peter’s Field, united in their passion for the right to vote. But as the speeches began, troops on horseback charged into the crowd, killing 15 and injuring more than 600. The Peterloo Massacre was a pivotal moment in British history – and now, MIF is marking its 200th anniversary with this world première, the climax to an extraordinary day of performance across the city (for details mif.co.uk). Composer Emily Howard, one of our most original musical voices, and writer Michael Symmons Roberts, winner of the Costa Poetry Award, have teamed up to write this major new work, both an elegy to the fallen and a celebration of our city.

Monday 8 July 5.30pm Join us in the Stalls Café Bar and relax with a drink and music by vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Sanja Cin, whose songs are a snapshot in time with musical influences from classic pop and folk, as well as music from Brazil to the Balkans. Rush Hour Social performances last for 45 minutes, are free to attend and you don’t need to book.

In a creative mix of old and new, associate artists, The Sixteen, make their annual Choral Pilgrimage, matching the florid motets of Sheppard, Wilkinson and Fayrfax from the Eton Choirbook with works by more recent masters of choral music: John Tavener, Eric Whitacre and Gabriel Jackson. James MacMillan binds these two historical worlds with a specially commissioned piece based on a musical fragment by the forgotten figure of Robert Wilkinson (c.1450-1515). Preview 6.30pm Harry Christophers and a singer from the choir discuss the evening’s programme. £38 – £18 £7.50 student standby tickets available on the day Book Tickets

Sir Mark Elder conductor Thursday 11 July 7.30pm Shostakovich Symphony No.7 ‘Leningrad’ 'One of Manchester’s cultural crown jewels. If evidence was ever required for this claim, then this unforgettable night was it', The Northern Soul on the Hallé’s 2013 performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No.7 A rare opportunity to get close to the genesis of a major new artwork, followed by a towering landmark in modern music: Shostakovich’s 'Leningrad' Symphony. Written for more than 100 musicians and first performed in the midst of the siege of the composer’s home city during the Second World War, Dmitri Shostakovich’s monumental Leningrad Symphony is a triumph of the human spirit. The concert opens with acclaimed theatre director Johan Simons joining Sir Mark Elder to discuss the new work they’re creating for The Factory, the future home of MIF. The work is inspired by two great artists and their experiences living on a knife edge in the Soviet Union – composer Dmitri Shostakovich and writer Vasily Grossman.
