BBC Philharmonic Clyne/Vaughan Williams/Berlioz
Ben Gernon conductor Jennifer Pike violin Saturday 18 January 7.30pm Anna Clyne Night Ferry (21’) Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending (13’) Berlioz Symphonie fantastique (50’) Anna Clyne describes Night Ferry as ‘music of voyages, from stormy darkness to enchanted worlds’. True, but that hardly captures the thrilling turbulence of the ride. Vaughan Williams’s classic sings vividly of England – but Berlioz’s wild work, written under the influences of opium and unrequited love, sounds like nothing else. Performing lesser-known works by Beethoven, alongside his unforgettable symphonies, both orchestras give prominence to the composer’s choral works, in particular gems like Elegischer Gesang (Elegiac Song), performed by the Hallé Youth Choir. Beethoven’s groundbreaking Ninth Symphony redefined the very nature of the genre; the setting of Schiller’s Ode to Joy in the finale, the first use of voices in a symphony, creates a staggering effect.
