I warmly invite you to my fifth Guitar Weekend at The Bridgewater Hall; a biennial festival of concerts and activities inspired by that most popular of musical instruments. I am launching the weekend with my own personal ‘celebration of the guitar’ alongside old friends, Manchester Camerata. On Saturday there’s a lunchtime recital and masterclass given by Croatian virtuoso, Zoran Dukić.

Across the three days, there are free foyer events, workshops and a lively guitar marketplace. The weekend culminates with a spectacular gathering of amateur guitarists on the Hall’s main stage and a genre-busting performance by rising star, Sean Shibe.

Guitar Marketplace Foyers At various times during Saturday and Sunday, Nugent Guitars and luthiers David Pelter, James Lister and Sam McLaren will display a selection of their finest wares with a chance to learn more about the art of guitarmaking and to try some new instruments. Talk: An Alternative History of the Guitar Tom McKinney speaker Barbirolli Room 10.30–11.30am Guitarist and broadcaster, Tom McKinney explores the development of the Viennese guitar including its historical origins, its influence in the US and its evolution into the modern steel-stringed instrument.

Bach Siciliana BWV 1001; Andante BWV 1003; Largo BWV 1005; Sarabanda BWV 1004 Piazzolla Invierno Porteño; Adios Nonino; Muerte de Angel During his early career, Zoran Dukić won nine first prizes in international competitions in just five years, sealing his reputation as one of the most remarkable musicians of his generation. His programme combines courtly dances by Bach with works by that master of tango, Astor Piazzolla. Antonio José was executed during the Spanish civil war and remains one of Spain’s most neglected composers. Sunday 27 January Craig’s Big Guitar Jamboree Big Guitar Jamboree

Film: Segovia, Song of the Guitar Charles Hallé Room 11.00am & 12 noon (film lasts 50 mins) A chance to see Christopher Nupen’s intimate documentary portrait of the legendary Spanish guitarist. The film dates from 1977, when Segovia was approaching the last decade of his life.

Join the orchestra as a player, with a choice of parts suitable from Grade 1 to 8 or take a seat in the auditorium for the concert. With special guests the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet, this is a rare opportunity to perform onstage at The Bridgewater Hall or enjoy a unique performance by over 100 guitars.

Parking Discounts

A limited number of prepay discounted spaces are available to patrons attending evening concerts at Q-Park First Street car park (see map on next page) at a rate of £6.50. Spaces must be booked at the time of purchasing your concert tickets no less than 24 hours before the event. Parking is limited to a maximum stay of 8 hours at the discounted rate.

Getting Here The Hall is in the centre of Manchester, easily accessible by public transport and by road. Metrolink tram passengers should alight at St Peter’s Square or Deansgate-Castlefield. The nearest bus stops for major routes into the city centre are St Peter’s Square/Portland Street or Deansgate. The nearest rail stations are Deansgate and Oxford Road. Coaches can drop off and pick up outside the main entrance on Lower Mosley Street.
