Bach Suites for solo cello (complete) 140’ (Interval of 25 mins) Alisa Weilerstein opens the International Concert Series with these remarkable suites for unaccompanied cello, which are amongst the most technically demanding in the repertoire. At the time of composition, believed to be between 1717 and 1723, the cello was most commonly seen as an accompanying instrument, but here Bach took a musical journey that displayed the virtuosity of the instrument and its performer.

Dementia Friendly Music Festival Thursday 26 September 10am - 5pm The Bridgewater Hall Manchester’s first dementia-friendly music festival, celebrating the creativity of people living with dementia Music has the power to connect. For people living with dementia, their families and carers, music can offer a means of communication which goes far beyond words. It can be relaxing, uplifting and fun. It can help people to re-connect with loved ones, memories and the joy of the present moment. It can help people to feel happier and less anxious. The So Many Beauties project offers creative musicmaking opportunities for people living with dementia. On BBC Music Day 2019 The Bridgewater Hall will host Manchester’s first dementia-friendly music festival. The festival will provide a safe space for people of all ages to explore different musical activities. No previous musical experience is required to enjoy the day! There will be gentle performances of familiar songs and tunes, as well as performances of music composed
by people living with dementia. There will also be the chance to join in with discussions, to play instruments and to create new pieces of music on the day! A range of dementia support organisations will also be present to provide information and advice for people wanting to find out more about living with dementia. Sunday 6 October 7.30pm The original ‘buoy band’, the Fisherman’s Friends meet on the Platt on the harbour in their native Port Isaac to sing the songs of the sea. A decade ago they became the first ever traditional folk act to land a UK top ten album. Their incredible true story is told in the 2019 film Fisherman’s Friends. Pete Hicks, who appears in the on-screen Fisherman’s Friends, has now joined the actual line up.
