Carol Wenmark On Sunday, April
28, 2019 Carol was inducted into the Bridgton Academy Hall of Fame in the Humanitarian category for her decades-long (and counting!) volunteer service to her community and her extraordinary commitment as an educator. Carol, whose acceptance speech brought the audience of nearly 200 to its feet, shared poignant words with the outgoing Class of 2019 about choices and change. Congratulations, Carol!

Richard Grant We are excited for
Richard, who was honored last summer at the Botanic Garden in Washington, DC, with the 30th Anniversary Lifetime Achievement Award from the Environmental Law Institute’s Wetland Awards. Richard was recognized for his decades-long dedication in wetlands protection, restoration, and education. Richard is the president of the Narrow River Preservation Association (NRPA) in his home state of Rhode Island; he has served in this role since 1996 when he was elected after over twenty years of service on the environmental nonprofit’s board of directors. Under his leadership, NRPA has grown to become the state-designated watershed council for the Narrow River. Richard is also widely lauded for strengthening the organization’s educational format in his capacity as both participant and facilitator of the “Art on the River” and “What is in the River” initiatives. Congratulations on this incredible honor, Richard—you make your Academy proud!

Marc Posner We were happy to hear from Marc earlier this year, who shares that he has now recovered from back surgery and enjoys working as an usher for his community’s local minor league baseball team. His family still operates a large farm in central Illinois and, when they can, Marc and his family return to Maine for a portion of the summer. We’re so glad you’re feeling better, Marc, and we hope to see you on campus again soon!

If he is not sailing, swimming, biking, or skiing, he can be found at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum where he is helping youngsters build boats. Have fun, Peter! Jon “Gabby”Price Gabby announced
his retirement last year as Husson University’s head football coach. Gabby was the first football coach in the university’s history and built a program that would go on to enjoy ten winning seasons, five Eastern Collegiate Football Conference championships, and four NCAA Division III tournament appearances during his twelve seasons at the helm. Under his
leadership, the Eagles also made appearances in two Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) bowl games (2008, 2015). Fellow Wolverine and BA alumnus Nat Clark ’96 was named Gabby’s successor. Congratulations on a phenomenal career and well-deserved retirement, Gabby!

Rob Phipps He’s a local radio star!
Late last fall, Rob appeared on “Nightside with Dan Rea,” a radio show based in Massachusetts, to discuss a controversial downtown repair plan for his hometown of Hopkinton, MA. In a nod to his North Bridgton stomping grounds, Rob made sure to sport his finest Bridgton Academy apparel for the occasion, offering a subtle promotion of his Academy. It sounds like you’re a natural, Rob—watch out, Dan Rea!

David Mulhern / Brian O’Hear It was
wonderful to hear from David, who reports that he and his BA roommate, Brian, participated as a relay team in the YMCA Wrightsville Beach Sprint Triathlon in September 2019. Competing as the “Wolverine76” team, the duo finished twelfth out of thirty teams! David and Brian’s wives also took part in the challenge on teams of their own. Well done, gentlemen—we hope to see team “Wolverine76” back at it next fall!

Tim Morris This past year was an
exciting one for Tim, who was inducted into the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in April. Tim, who has served as Melrose High School’s head foot-
ball coach for twenty-five out of his thirty-six years at the school, rounded out his successful year by guiding his players to victory at the Division 4 Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium in December. Tim boasts numerous awards and accolades earned during his nearly four-decade career in coaching, including Boston Globe Coach of the Year (1998); Middlesex League Coach of the Year (1998, 1999, 2004, 2007); and Patriots Coach of the Week (1999, 2004, 2007, 2017). He has also been named Coach of the Shriner’s All-Star Classic four times. Congratulations on a phenomenal career, Tim, and best of luck for continued success!

Peter Allen It was great to learn more
about Peter’s life since his year at Bridgton! Following his postgraduate year, Peter attended the University of Colorado, eventually transferring to the University of New Hampshire where he would earn his degrees in political science and writing. Following his college graduation, Peter joined a political activist group and traveled the world, which included numerous hiking and outdoor experiences to nurture his love for the natural world around us. A skilled home renovator, Peter lives in Portsmouth, NH, where he is restoring his period 1700s home. He is currently writing a book about his many travels. Thank you for connecting with us, Peter, and best of luck as you work towards your goal of transitioning to a full-time writer! Brian Macdonald Brian touched base to share that he is now an instructor with the Coast Guard’s Maritime Law Enforcement Academy (Charleston, SC). His appointment to this position caps off a nearly 25-year career in high-level law enforcement. In a testament to the breadth of the Bridgton Academy alumni network, Brian recently had the pleasure of teaching one of his BA alumni brothers, Ian Bamford ’08 (pictured at left with Brian)—wow! Thank you for your service, Brian and Ian—you make your Academy proud! Michael Sweeney Michael reports that he recently ran into fellow alumnus Bill Terry ’87 in Marlborough, MA where his son was participating in youth hockey events—it truly is a small world for our Wolverines!

James Borodawka We’re happy for
James, who was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame last summer! James was honored in the Hall’s Perry category. Following his year at Bridgton, where he was named an All-New England performer, James went on to become a two-time captain at UMass Lowell. There, he led the nation in free throw percentage during the 1994-95 season. Way to go, James, and congratulations on this well-deserved honor!

Nat Clark Nat took the helm of
Husson University’s football squad last year after working alongside his former high school coach, mentor, and BA alumnus Jon “Gabby” Price ’68. Prior to being named Price’s successor, Nat served as Husson football’s special teams coordinator and offensive line coach, the latter of which he continues to this day. “I am very honored to be named the head coach at Husson University,” Clark shared during a recent news conference. “Gabby [Price] built this program, and it’s an honor to follow in his footsteps. This has been a great part of my life for twelve years.” Congratulations on this well-deserved promotion, Nat—good luck!

Jeremy Shortsleeve After suffering injuries sustained in a serious motorcycle crash several years after his graduation from Bridgton, Jeremy went on to become one of the leading handcyclists in the Northeast, setting records for the sport year over year in his home state of Vermont. When he is not busy training and leaving his competitors in the dust, Jeremy is a network engineer for a major IT service management company. You continue to make your Academy proud, Jeremy!

Cory Kahoun We learned through the
grapevine that Cory, who is now a police officer with the city of Columbus in Ohio, was inducted into the Ohio Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2018. After his year at Bridgton, Cory went on to

After running a popcorn business that flourished at concerts and festivals, JoJo went on to purchase Bell the Cat, a popular deli restaurant and coffee shop in Belfast, Maine. Under his leadership, the eatery has expanded significantly and continues to do so to this day. Keep up the good work, JoJo! You may just see us visiting Bell the Cat in Belfast one of these days!

Andrew Byron Andrew recently
wrapped up his second season as an assistant coach with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) football team, working specifically with the defensive line. Prior to assuming his role at MIT, Andrew coached at Merrimack College, Maine Maritime Academy, Springfield College, and Haverhill High School. Andrew earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Springfield College, where he minored in psychology. He went on to earn his master’s degree in Student Personnel Administration from his alma mater in 2013. Best of luck, Andrew, and congratulations!

Paul Dick Following his year at Bridg-
ton Academy, Paul, who hails from Belfast, Ireland, went on to attend Franklin Pierce University as a basketball student-athlete. At the close of his collegiate career, he returned to Europe, where he played professional basketball in Germany (EVL Limburg team) before moving on to Spain (Baloncesto Fuenlabrada team). After navigating numerous injuries, however, he decided to return to Ireland to begin a career as an electrician, which he continues to this day. His relocation home also resulted in a new opportunity to play at the highest level of basketball competition in Ireland—the Super League. As a guard for the Tralee Warriors, Paul has been a standout on the team, often leading the squad in scoring and securing numerous accolades, including Basketball Ireland Player of the Month (December 2018) and Basketball Ireland Player of the Week (March 2019). Well done Paul, and keep up the great work!

Rob Campbell, MS, RSCC Rob recently accepted a dream-come-true opportunity with the Detroit Red Wings to serve as their Director of Strength and Conditioning. This position comes on the heels of a whirlwind few years for Rob, which saw him serving in a similar capacity with the St. Louis Blues (Stanley Cup winners, 2019) and the New York Mets. Outstanding work, Rob—your Academy is proud!

Dashaun Wiggins Following his year at Bridgton, Dashaun went on to play for Portland State’s (Portland, OR) Division I basketball team, which launched him into the world of international professional basketball competition. Dashaun, a stretch four for team NSH Jakarta (Indonesia) is currently an unrestricted free agent with the NBA. Prior to joining the Indonesian professional basketball team, Dashaun competed as a member of teams based in the countries of Cyprus and Georgia. Way to go, Dashaun—keep up the good work!

Cejay Suarez We are excited for Cejay,

Cejay, who will work closely with pitchers, is also the head baseball coach of the Sanford Mainers (New England Collegiate Baseball League). Cejay’s appointment to Husson’s coaching staff comes on the heels of an extremely successful post-college coaching career to date that includes having had fourteen former players of his go on to sign contracts with Major League Baseball. The Argos, as they are known, are a professional Canadian football team that competes
in the Eastern Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL). The Argos are also the oldest existing sports team in North America that still uses its original name, which dates back to 1873. Prince recently graduated from Pace University where he was a standout basketball and football student-athlete. After his first season as a defensive lineman with Pace, Prince was named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference Third Team. Congratulations, Prince, and best wishes for a successful season!

Dennis Ashley After competing in
eighty-five games over the last three years for the UMaine Black Bears, Dennis will be completing his college career at Saint Joseph’s University (Philadelphia, PA) as a graduate transfer—an NCAA rule that allows players who have graduated with a year of remaining athletic eligibility to move on to another Division I school. Dennis will train with the Hawks under the leadership of Billy Lange, former assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers. Congratulations, Dennis, and best of luck for the season! James “JJ” Brania-Hopp Coming off of a stellar college career at Washburn University (Topeka, KS), from which he earned his degree in communications, JJ is now a CFL/NFL free agent and wide receiver for the Oakland Panthers indoor football team. At Washburn, JJ recorded 123 receptions for 2,147 starts and sixteen touchdowns averaging 17.5 yards per catch. He was a first team all-MIAA pick during his senior year and honorable mention selection during his junior year. In 2018,
he was named second team All-American by the Don Hansen Football Gazette and was selected for the College Gridiron Showcase. That same year, he was also named the team’s Most Valuable Player and the Ichabod Offensive Player of the Year—the second time he was awarded with this honor. Keep up the great work, JJ—we’re excited to follow your continued success! Scot Rosenthal We were excited to hear from Scot, who reports that he recently graduated from the University of Buffalo, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing sciences. He is currently applying to a diverse list of schools in pursuit of his doctorate of audiology (Au.D). His ultimate goal is to become a practicing audiologist. Nolan Cooney Nolan, who will earn
his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University this year, has been invited by the school to return for another scholarship year and com-
alumniupdates plete his master’s degree in marketing. Nolan is a placekicker and punter for the Orange. While he’s spotted the ball these last two seasons for Syracuse football, the Orange have hit 48 out of 55 field goals and gained 100 out of 101 extra points. Nolan is a member of the Syracuse chapter of the Uplifting Athletes leadership team and was the chapter’s vice president (2019-20). He is also a representative for the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and a five-time member of the university’s Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. He is a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Honor Roll selection as well. Outstanding news, Nolan—keep up the good work! Dan Gorman We are proud of Dan, who was named to the All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Third Team in lacrosse! Dan earned the GNAC Rookie of the Year and Second Team selection in 2017. Following his year at Bridgton, Dan went on to compete as a student-athlete at Lasell University (Newton, MA). Congratulations on this well-earned achievement, Dan!
Europe, Asia, and the United States to not only promote high-level ice hockey competition but also foster cultural enrichment and strengthen international relations between students and staff from around the globe. John Thornton We are proud of John, who successfully summited Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)—the world’s tallest freestanding mountain—as part of a ten-person team this past fall. The group climbed on behalf of Helen & Douglas House, an organization that provides hospice care for babies and children in and around John’s hometown of Oxfordshire, England. The excursion lasted a total of seven days: five to ascend and two to descend, with acclimatization days on either end of the climb. Prior to this achievement,

Justin Wardwell Only weeks after his graduation from Bridgton, Justin was a member of the Brian Rose Baseball U18 Bulldogs team that won the American Division championship at the Boston Open this past summer. The team secured eight consecutive wins over the course of the five-day tournament. Justin was joined by seven former Greater Fall River high school players, including Curtis Perry ’20, who enrolled at Bridgton Academy shortly thereafter. Well done, gentlemen!

Dan Whritenour Dan was selected to represent the United States and the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s (ACHA) Division II ice hockey players on the ACHA Select Team, which participated in the Student Hockey Challenge in Barnaul, Russia this past fall. Dan, a student-athlete at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) is currently the captain of UNH Club Hockey. The challenge, which took place during the first week of October, aims to bring together teams from the Russian Federation,
John completed a contract with the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust as an organizer of the Royal International Air Tattoo, the world’s largest military air show. These days, John can be found on the other side of the world— Melbourne, Australia, to be exact— where he recently started a position as a family au pair. While on a recent trip to Hawaii to fulfill his annual reserve duty obligation with the US Navy, Cmdr Mitch McGuffie ’99 connected with Admiral John Aquilino ’80. Admiral Aquilino is the current Commander of the US Pacific Fleet, headquartered out of Pearl Harbor. The US Pacific Fleet is the world’s largest, encompassing 100 million square miles (nearly half of the Earth’s surface) and consists of approximately 200 ships/submarines, nearly 1,200 aircraft, and over 130,000 sailors and civilians. Adm. Aquilino is the 36th commander of the Fleet, following in the footsteps of such naval legends as Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz and Admiral Raymond Spruance. Commander Mitch McGuffie, now a reservist, was the Commanding Officer of the USS Firebolt (PC10). Following his year at Bridgton, McGuffie matriculated at the US Naval Academy. He would go on to serve our country in numerous roles: Main Propulsion Assistant, USS Benfold (DDG 65); Naval Exchange Officer, HMS Cornwall (F99); Naval Liaison Officer (US Senate); and Operations Officer, USS Laboon (DDG 58). McGuffie earned his master’s degree in 2015 from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Along with their shared US Navy and Bridgton Academy connection, Aquilino and McGuffie also have another common bond: they were each inducted into Bridgton Academy’s Hall of Fame, in 2011 and 2017, respectively. As they approach their 55-year reunion in September, the Class of 1965 has built on the momentum they gained in the lead-up to their 50-year reunion in 2015, with members of the class meeting annually the first Saturday in November. Classmates and their spouses from across the country have already confirmed their attendance for the 2020 get-together. Lookin’ good, gentlemen!
