The American Performance Horseman is the creation and vision of Teton Ridge. It exists to elevate western equine sports through multiple platforms, with innovative and interactive technology. “The American Performance Horseman isn’t another horse show, it’s a celebration of western horse sport and our athletes at the highest level,” stated Anna Morrison, NRCHA Executive Director. “With a shortened format showcasing the top five riders of the year in each discipline, it will pack the excitement of our industry’s top talent in an hour-long production that will bring the sports we love to an entirely new audience.”

The American Rodeo will provide a global stage for the athletes of each western equine sports discipline to compete not only for individual prize payouts, but also a first of its kind team format as well. The American Performance Horseman is a prestigious competitive exhibition that is supported by AQHA, APHA, NRHA, NCHA and NRCHA, with all associations excited for their respective communities to be celebrated and showcased to the world in this unparalleled and innovative format.

The American Performance Horseman will offer fans a groundbreaking new way to embrace and support the legacy of the American West on the eve of The American Rodeo as a celebration

To further advance the western sports industry and bring increased opportunities for athletes to compete in cities across the country, Teton Ridge has announced a newly revised qualification system for The American Rodeo 2023. The American Rodeo is an unrivaled celebration of the pioneering spirit of the American West and represents the richest single-day event in all of western sports.

Made up of multiple qualifying rounds dedicated to each of the eight disciplines of rodeo, the newly launched format will host more than 50 events in cities coast to coast, beginning in July 2022 through February 2023. Rodeo athletes will have the opportunity to earn a spot at The American Rodeo by going through a clearly defined, highly competitive tournament-style series of qualifiers that culminates at the Contender Tournament Finals in Texas. Teton Ridge has added guaranteed prize money to regional semi-finals and regional finals upwards of $900,000 which takes the total prize

Expanding upon its commitment to elevate and positively impact the western industry, Teton Ridge unveiled an unprecedented new event – The American Performance Horseman that will make its debut on Friday, March 10, 2023 in Arlington, Tex. during The American Rodeo.

· Round 1: The American Contender Tournament, consisting of three regions (East, Central and West) and hosting up to 54 qualifying events, is open to athletes of all levels and ages. The expanded selection of contender events will welcome thousands of new and existing athletes to compete for their chance to advance to the Regional Semi-Finals.

The American Performance Horseman will consist of the top five riders from each discipline, with the highest show earnings from the 2022 show season as tracked by each association. Standings will be finalized and announced following each discipline’s 2022 Futurity

“Since Teton Ridge acquired The American Rodeo last year, our ambition has been to elevate western sports to a national stage,” stated Joe Loverro, President of Teton Ridge Sports. “The revitalized American Contender Tournament is a first step towards that long-term goal.”

· Round 4: The American Contender Tournament Finals kicks off The American Rodeo week in Texas with nationally broadcast events, bringing the Top 4 athletes from each Regional Finals plus one athlete advancing through the Contender Tournament Wild CardTheevent.American Rodeo (www.americanrodeo.com) is where all roads ultimately lead to the richest single-day rodeo on March 11, 2023, as the chase for the $1 million bonus culminates. SINGLE-SEASON MONEY RECORD BEFORE NFR

STETSON WRIGHT BREAKS PRCA ALL-AROUND

22 SEPTEMBER 2022

After earning $17,927 over the weekend at three NFR Playoff Series presented by Pendleton Whisky rodeos, the Milford, Utah, cowboy has now broken the PRCA record for the most money won in the all-around in a single season again with $332,023 in saddle bronc riding and bull riding.

At 23 years old, Wright is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. In 2020, he was the PRCA World Champion in the

all-around and bull riding. Last season, he added his fourth and fifth gold buckles by winning the all-around yet again and capturing his first saddle bronc riding world title.

Last season, Wright broke the record that was previously set by Trevor Brazile in 2015, when he ended the 2021 regular season with $320,482. He would then go on to set the all-time single season earning record after the NFR with $686,513.

The30.Cinch Playoffs at the Puyallup Rodeo at the Washington State Fair, Sept. 8-11 will play a key role in catapulting athletes into the 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge with a $1 million payout.

By TANNER BARTH, PRCA Media Coordinator

In just his fifth season of ProRodeo, Stetson Wright continues to rewrite the record books.

He currently sits No.1 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings in bull riding and second in saddle bronc riding. His 2022 season has been spurred by 21 all-around, 11 saddle bronc riding, and 11 bull riding wins so far this season. Wright will have a golden opportunity to add to his regular season earnings total with still five weeks remaining in the ProRodeo regular season, which concludes on Sept.

"The second reason for taking the top five in the World is that it adds a lot of intrigue for the next athletes up," Loverro said. "We've automatically seeded the No. 6 through 20 in regional semifinals, and that adds some star-power in those regions. There will be big names in those regions. We want them to be broadcast-worthy. We want there to be star power."

working with the very best in the Western Sports industry to elevate the sport, so when seeking a partner to bring more team ropers to The American Contender Tournament it made perfect sense to turn to the WSTR to bring more ropers from across the country to our contender events," Joe Loverro, President of Teton Ridge Sports, said. "It makes sense to work with those who are already the best at what they do.

The American Rodeo is now the official sponsor of the Ariat World Series of Team Roping's Open division, setting up a new, Westernthedoorsa$2-millionqualificationtournament-stylestructureforfamedrodeoandkickingoffpartnershipthatwillopennewforteamroping,alreadyhighest-payingeventinallofsports."TetonRidgeiscommittedto

Those who finish the ProRodeo season in No. 6 to No. 20 in the 2022 PRCA world standings will then be seeded into the new qualification tournament alongside the Contender and Finale qualifiers, roping at the regional, $40,000-added one-head Contender Regional Finals.

The top five contestants at the end of the year's PRCA world standings will automatically qualify to the final day at AT&T

Stadium. In previous years, the top 10 in the world standings got the bye to The American's big show, bypassing the qualification tournament all together."That was my decision," Loverro, who'd previously worked for former owners RFD-TV and The Cowboy Channel on The American, said. "It's something I've talked about for years. I think that it's two-fold: one, it condenses the rodeo. In the first few years, we saw a sixplus hour rodeo. With the round of 15, the championship round and entertainment, that's a large ask for your fans and your athletes. So by cutting five, you've reduced the show by 33%."

Over the last few years, the number of team ropers participating in American qualifiers has declined. I think that team ropers are gambler by spirit, and if they think they can't win, they're not going to play. We realized we needed to reimagine the format and the path to the American and the payouts as we go. We don't want the perception that there's no way to advance, that you can't win. With the new format, there's more opportunities and more reasons to play. The idea is to take contender events to the contestants. If you are a roper on the East Coast, out in North Carolina or Florida, there had been a long to haul for the Qualifier events in Texas and Oklahoma."Thenew partnership between the organization that produces the richest cowboy event in the world and the richest one-day rodeo in the world will set a series of six, $10,000-added American Rodeo qualifiers at major Ariat World Series Team Roping Open American Rodeo events across the country, sending two teams each into the new American Rodeo Contender Tournament, beginning at JX2's The Daddy in Cheyenne, Wyoming July 21. All qualifiers will stream live on wstroping.com, with footage archived for re-watching on roping.com.

The team at The American is talking regularly with PRCA CEO Tom Glause about this subject. "Our intention is for it to be PRCA sanctioned," Loverro said. "It wasn't last year as the first year of Teton Ridge, and there were complications with media rights. But it's our hope that it will be in 2023."

"The World Series qualifiers will more than double the contestant pool for the American Rodeo and at the same time give our members and unbelievable shot on a large stage," Tom Winsor, CEO of WSTR [Equine Network], said. "This is a one-of-a-kind rodeo, and we are happy to be a small part of it."

NEW Ariat WSTR American Rodeo Open Roping Contender

Nine teams will also advance to the tournament from the Ariat World Series of Team Roping Finale, where there will be $50,000 in added money up for grabs.

Will The American Count Toward the 2023 PRCA World Standings?

The three $40,000-added, one-head Contender Regional Finals, pits the 12 teams who advanced from the six qualifiers against the nine teams advancing from the Finale, as well as the No. 6 to No. 20 team ropers in the 2022 PRCA world standings. The dates and locations for the Contender Regional Finals will be announced at a later date, but qualifiers at the six lead-up events will compete at the regional finals nearest to where they won their spot. The top nine from the Finale will get to select the region in which they compete, with first-place in the roping selecting their region first, second place selecting their region second, and continuing on from there. Sixth through 20th in the PRCA world standings will also get to select their regional qualifier in the same manner.

26 SEPTEMBER 2022

Four teams will advance from each of the three regional finals to the Contender Finals on March 8, 2023. Those 12 teams will compete for $80,000 in this one-head match, with the top five going head-to-head with the top five in the PRCA world standings at The American Rodeo itself on March 11. As always, the top four will advance from there to the final round at The American, with a total round payoff of $280,000; including the $100,000 to the winners. If a qualifying team happens to make it through the entire tournament and into the final four, they will be eligible for the $1 million Contender Bonus. (See next page for the full tournament breakdown and payout structure.)

Every day, I’m learning more and more and processing what the priorities are for this great Association. The talented and passionate people who work at AQHA are instrumental in establishing what we need to do and where we need to go from here to better serve you, our members.

Over the years, I’ve been very fortunate to represent the brands that I love from Wrangler to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association to the United States Team Roping Championships, and now the American Quarter Horse Association.

Develop additional youth resources to grow, lead and challenge our youth members and enable AQHYA to recruit more members.

Although these top initiatives are our main focus, they are not our only focus. As an Association of horsemen and -women, we will continue to focus on adhering to the Association’s mission, which includes protecting our horse; recording and preserving pedigrees; providing beneficial services and diverse educational programs; and generating growth of AQHA membership, which we’ve seen year-over-year in 2020 and 2021.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my skills and knowledge to improve the industry’s leader, and to focus on what drives our business – our members and their American Quarter Horses.

I was honored to take the lead as the chief executive officer of the largest equine breed association in the world. Since then, I have been working closely with the AQHA senior leadership team to evaluate the current processes and develop a plan to drive the Association forward.

AQHA has come leaps and bounds in the past several years and our members are seeing that progress with quicker turnaround times for transfers, registrations and other AQHA business; however, it is my goal to harness the skills of our team to successfully achieve our top initiatives, while providing our members and their American Quarter Horses with the best service and programs available. Even though we have made significant improvements in the past few years, our team is dedicated to continuing to improve our efforts to provide our customers with an outstanding customer experience.

My plan for AQHA is threefold: Establish the most important initiatives for the Association.

These top initiatives include:

strengthen our team because the stronger our team is, the stronger the results will be and the better we can serve you.

My wife, Allie, tells people I don’t know a stranger, so please don’t hesitate to say hi and introduce yourself if you see me at events or at the AQHA Headquarters in Amarillo. That’s one of the things I love most about this position, meeting others who are truly passionate about the American Quarter Horse, just like I am!

Driving AQHA Forward

Over the past several weeks, the senior leadership team and I have done an extensive review of the Association’s initiatives. Each department was directed to bring two initiatives to the table that impact AQHA internally and externally. After a comprehensive review of all of these initiatives, the team established the most important initiatives for AQHA as a whole.

Accomplish those key initiatives to the best of our ability, rather than take on too many initiatives and only reaching partial Continuecompletion.to

The National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board is comprised of nine individuals representing a diverse range of stakeholders and interests. The Board provides advice and recommendations to the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service as the agencies work to carry out their responsibilities under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. The Act mandates the protection and management of free-roaming horses and burros in a manner that promotes a thriving natural ecological balance on public lands.

More information about the Advisory Board meeting, including an agenda, can be found in the August 30, 2022 Federal Register. Additional meeting materials will be posted to the BLM’s website prior to the meeting.

From humble beginnings in 1970, with a mere 27 entries, the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity®, now presented by Metallic Cat, has flourished into one of the most prestigious and exciting events in the Western performance industry. Many cow horse enthusiasts describe their first Snaffle Bit Futurity® experience as the reason they became hooked on the spinetingling sport. Hundreds of horses and thousands of fans from across the U.S., Canada and overseas make the journey to the Futurity each year. Thrills, and sometimes spills, abound as 3-year-old horses

The National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will meet October 4-6, 2022, at the Bureau of Land Management’s National Training Center located at 9828 N. 31st Avenue in Phoenix, Arizona. The public is invited to attend in-person or view the entire Advisory Board meeting virtually via live stream at BLM.gov/live.

The public may also submit written comments to the Advisory Board in addition to, or in lieu of, providing verbal comment.

As of March 1, 2022, the BLM estimated public rangelands administered by the agency were home to approximately 82,384 wild horses and burros—more than three times the number the habitat can sustainably support in balance with other authorized land uses. Similarly, the U.S. Forest Service manages approximately 8,000 wild horses and burros on National Forest System public lands across the West.

OCT 6 – 22, 2022 - FORT WORTH, TX

The public will have an opportunity to make a verbal statement to the Advisory Board in person and virtually via Zoom on Tuesday, October 4, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. PT; on Wednesday, October 5, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. PT; and on Thursday, October 6, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. PT. To accommodate all individuals interested in providing comments, in-person and virtual commenters must register with the BLM at least three days in advance of the meeting.

The Non Pro Futurity had $126,000 added along with $7,500 added to the Level 1 Limited Open, the Amateur and the Non Pro Limited Futurity. The South Point Hotel, which is a hotspot for contestants and visitors during the Wrangler NFR, is glad to be the event venue for the 2022 Wrangler NFBR.

“We are thrilled to host the National Finals Breakaway Roping at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center,” said Ryan Growney, General Manager of the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa. “When Paula and Michael Gaughan built the South Point, they created a place that Cowboys and Cowgirls could call their home away from home – we call it Vegas Cowboy Central. With the addition of the Breakaway Finals, we’ll call it Vegas Cowgirl Central, and it will be an amazing addition to all of the other events and activities held at the South Point during those first two weeks in December.”

The Top 15 breakaway ropers will compete for prize money of $250,000 during the twoday, 10-round performance. “I’m pleased to see the continued success and growth of breakaway roping since the inaugural National Finals Breakaway Roping in 2020,” PRCA CEO Tom Glause said. “Breakaway roping has experienced rapid growth and it is now featured at over 300 PRCA rodeos annually. This success has resulted in an increase of prize money at the NFBR to reach $250,000.”

The 2020 National Finals Breakaway Roping took place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, in conjunction with the NFR and Jackie Crawford captured the inaugural world championship. Last year the NFBR took place in Las Vegas at the Orleans Hotel and Casino and was won by Sawyer Gilbert.

many committees are having breakaway roping at their rodeos and now they along with fans will have the opportunity to see the best women breakaway ropers in the world compete at the South Point.”

“All segments of the Western performance industry, regardless of breed, is seeing increased interest and growth in the ranch events. There is so much popularity and interest in these ranch horse classes because of the versatility of the horses and the natural way of going,” Bud said. “It didn’t go unnoticed that the quantity and quality of horses showing in the Paint Horse classes had increased in the past couple of years. I hope this Triple Crown is mutually beneficial for ranch events and also for APHA and their World Show. Better caliber competition makes everything better, in my opinion.”

One of the most exciting parts, Daniel says, was watching Youth rider Treylyn Hancock—APHA’s new Youth president from Wharton, Texas—nearly sweep the three Non-Pro Ranch Horse Triple Crown classes. Treylyn and her Paint, Slide My Way, won the ranch riding and ranch trail portions, and were reserve in the ranch rail pleasure class. She won more than $12,000 in the Ranch Horse Triple Crown classes, and also scored other prizes that included two saddles and a director’s chair.

Inaugural Ranch Horse Triple Crown pays out over $116,000 at APHA World Show

“It was a great experience because it was so competitive with a good amount of horses and even payout with the Open, which was really neat,” Treylyn said. “This event is such a valuable addition to the ranch horse market. It also brought more people to Paint World to see how good the classes are, and there were more people who entered the Open/Amateur Paint classes because they were already going for the Triple Crown.”

Bud Lyon of Tioga, Texas, scored big in the Ranch Horse Triple Crown; together, Bud and his customers took home more than $77,000 in prize money at the APHA World Show, with a large chunk of that coming from the Ranch Horse Triple Crown events.

By Jessica Hein

The first-ever Ranch Horse Triple Crown Challenge successfully shook up the ranch horse market with its huge payouts and all-breed format. More than $116,000 was paid out across the event’s six Open and Non-Pro classes, which took place July 3-6 in Fort Worth, Texas, in conjunction with

“We are grateful for the success we had and were excited for the opportunity,” he said. “The ranch events have evolved really quickly and there is definitely a market and desire by the exhibitors to show not just for titles, trophies and buckles, but also for prize money. This is something that’s the next evolution of our ranch horse industry. Hopefully it’s a great stepping stone.”

Bud loved the all-breed aspect to the Ranch Horse Triple Crown and brought both Paints and Quarter Horses to the event, which also drew entries from other breeds, too.

Newman is sure to add to his record total as the PRCA regular season doesn’t end until Sept. 30. This season, Newman, who leads the PRCA | RAM World Standings, has won countless rodeos, including RodeoHouston. At RodeoHouston, he pocketed $57,500. Newman won the coveted RodeoHouston title with a 93-point ride on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Billie in the Championship Shootout at NGR Stadium.

The amazing season of saddle bronc rider Sage Newman got even better this past weekend. Newman earned $23,634 at four different rodeos, highlighted by his $13,902 payday at the Xtreme Bronc Finals in Rapid City, S.D., on Aug. 21.

From 2017-20, Newman earned a combined $33,000 and some change and then everything changed in 2021. “2017 was my first year and in 2018 I ended up breaking my leg and it took me a little bit of time to come back,” Newman said. “In 2019, I just kind of circuit rodeoed, and 2020 was COVID, and I didn’t really get to go that year so I just kind of stayed home and practiced and got ready for 2021. That’s when it all kicked off. Honestly, I just think I matured a bunch and got comfortable. I feel like I belong. I’m just having fun and traveling partners help out as well and I have a great traveling crew.”

SAGE NEWMAN SETS REGULAR SEASON SADDLE BRONC EARNINGS MARK BEFORE NFR

Newman of Melstone, Mont., made his Wrangler National Finals Rodeo debut last year finishing 12th in the regular season world standings with $82,718. He earned $42,658 at the Wrangler NFR at the Thomas & Mack Center last December in Las Vegas, placing in two rounds, and finishing 11th in the world standings with $125,375.“I’mjust going to keep doing what I’m doing and going at them one horse at a time, and just doing my job and let the chips fall where they may,” Newman said. “I just want to work hard and have fun doing it. We are all entered up and there’s no slowing down. All gas no brakes.”

By earning that amount Newman upped his season total to $233,360, which is a new regular season saddle bronc earnings record before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The previous record was $224,488 set by Ryder Wright in 2019. “This season has been awesome,” Newman said. “I didn’t even know I broke the record. Somebody text me the other day and said congrats on breaking the record and I didn’t even know what he was talking about. It took me a while to figure out what he was talking about and this is pretty cool.”

partners, and I told them last year I was fighting to get $80,000 at the end of the year.”

Newman is in the rig with Kolby Wanchuk (10th in the world standings); Chase Brooks (12th) and Tanner Butner (16th). “Our main goal is to get all four of us to the NFR,” Newman said.

“That was unbelievable,” said Newman, 24. “That was the most memorable win of my career so far. It’s a legendary rodeo and to be able to win that is amazing. My traveling partner Kolby Wanchuk got on that horse (Billie) in San Antonio (Feb. 26) and was 90 on him, so I knew what he was all about and when I drew that horse, I was pretty excited. “I was talking with some of my traveling

Upon further review, the report also discovered most horses at the facility received the vaccination against influenza 6 months before this incident, but all of the West Douglas horses were either unvaccinated, partly vaccinated, or received a booster shot within 10 days of the equine influenza outbreak. To summarize the “dash” in Don’s life, one could pick words like consistency and character. But the consistency you saw, or the character he was to you were unique. His peers saw one level of his wit and comradery; another appeared as he chaperoned his son, Barney, through the youth years and as an adult; another for his daughter, Karen; one for his youngest, Cathi, and the beauty of the admiration he felt as his granddaughters, Shannon and Dylana, made their future in horses. He shared a fulfilling 43 years with Beverly as he hit the stride of his life and blossomed with his role in support of her showing, then his formation of the Iowa Ranch Horse Association in 1999. He always looked back with appreciation of the AQHA Champions he had made in the early 1960s, Rusty Tequila and Wapsie Spud, who are both in the IQHA Hall of Fame.

Don served as an AQHA and APHA judge for over 30 years, and was a National Director of AQHA from 1985 to March 1998, when he was elevated to Director Emeritus. He served on the Marketing and Public Information Committees and was selected by AQHA to conduct a multiday seminar in Japan in 1988 on show classes, training and conformation of the American Quarter Horse. Don knew a good horse, and helped many of his relatives pick out the perfect horses for their needs. He had shared an amazing life with his brothers Frank and Jim, sister Elise and his parents. He chose to serve in the Army and pursue a life in the cattle buying industry rather than accepting a contract from the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. If the East coast had lured him away, the face of the Iowa equine industry would have been simply void of so many wonderful memories. A cowboy at heart, a friend indeed, a husband, parent and grandparent of amazing stature… we will always miss you.

But then he really focused when we went down centerline. I thought I had him even a bit better balanced and more packaged than the first day and he’s just really rideable. He has such incredible suppleness, especially for a four-year-old. He just feels like every part of him moves, and I love that feeling. This is the second year that the BLM has invited proposals for wild horse and burro projects through a new streamlined and centralized funding opportunity. Grant sizes will range from $1,000 to $7,500,000.Anexample of an on-going project awarded through the previous funding opportunity can be found in Oregon, where a public-private partnership helps dart difficult-to-reach wild horses with a birth-control vaccine. Thanks to the collaboration with local non-profit partner High Desert Strategies, 150 wild horses have been treated on public lands in eastern Oregon, which is slowing herd growth and reducing the need to remove animals to address overpopulation.Partnerships formed through this funding opportunity will support critical activities important to the management of wild horses and burros. Proposed off-range projects will be accepted until October 31, 2022 and could include activities such as facilitating the placement of excess animals into private care or providing educational opportunities to the public. Projects to support on-range activities, such as building habitat improvements or applying fertility control to wild horses and burros, can be submitted by January 31, 2023.
