About Zach Top: Hailed by Rolling Stone as one of the “hottest acts right now,” Zach Top is in the midst of a breakout year following the release of his acclaimed debut album, Cold Beer & Country Music. Produced by Carson Chamberlain, the album has landed on several “Best of 2024” lists so far including Rolling Stone, Billboard and The New York Times, who praises, “the music is airtight and fluent—a demonstration of vivid coloring within hard lines.” Known for his “thrilling” (Holler) live performances, Top recently wrapped an extensive run with Lainey Wilson and will kick off his “Cold Beer & Country Music” headline tour in January. The highly anticipated trek, which includes two nights at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, sold out just hours after tickets went on sale. The CMA Award-nominee has also shared stages with notable artists such as Dwight Yoakam and Billy Strings and will join Alan Jackson for select upcoming shows. Widely respected by his peers, Top also recently collaborated with Billy Strings for an exclusive Apple Music Nashville Sessions three-song EP, which is available now. Raised in Sunnyside, WA, Top grew up on classic country music around the family farm. At the age of seven, he formed a bluegrass band with his siblings, which set the stage for his future musical ambitions.
As the developer of Racehorse Strength Equi-Block® and LaKOTA®, one of Canada’s top joint supplement and topical pain relief brands, as well as the co-developer of Magic Cushion®, SLIDE™ founder Rick Stewart knows a thing or two about combating joint pain. “I grew up in horse racing. We had one of the top standardbred racing stables in California and western Canada”, he states. Being in the racehorse business Stewart has dealt with his share of joint, ligament, tendon, hoof and back problems in his horses. “Lameness is the biggest thing that racehorse trainers deal with. It’s a never ending battle”, he says.
According to Stewart, feeding 200 mg a day of hyaluronic acid didn’t produce any noticeable benefits in his horses; neither did 500 mg or even 1,000 mg of hyaluronic acid daily. “It wasn’t until I starting feeding my horses 2,500 mg of hyaluronic acid a day that I began to see some pretty decent results”, he says. “I finally settled on 2,500 mg of hyaluronic acid twice a day for a total of 5,000 mg
In the early 1990’s, Stewart began feeding hyaluronic acid to his horses hoping to prevent joint problems from occurring. “I developed the first capsaicin based topical pain reliever for horses (Equi-Block®) and I was probably the first to feed hyaluronic acid, too. It wasn’t in any equine joint supplements back in the 90’s, but veterinarians were injecting it into painful joints and it seemed to work pretty good for a short period of time. I started feeding my sore horses 200 mg a day of hyaluronic acid. I did that for a couple of months and then gauged the results”.
daily and I’ve been feeding those dosages to my horses for three decades now. I put all my young horses on SLIDE™ and I’ve never had any of them develop joint problems as they got older. And it seems to stop degeneration of cartilage in horses with existing joint problems as they all improve on SLIDE™. I’ve seen some very profound results in horses that were already suffering from joint pain after feeding them SLIDE™ for less than 30 days, and so have many others that have used SLIDE™ on their lame horses”.
Stewart says that the majority of equine joint supplements on the market today with hylauronic acid are mainly glucosamine based with very small amounts of hyaluronic acid added for marketing purposes. “Hyaluronic acid at the doses that SLIDE™ provides absolutely works. But existing equine joint supplements with hyaluronic acid don’t have enough in them to see any benefits from the hyaluronic acid. The amount of hyaluronic acid in equine joint supplements averages about 200 mg per recommended daily serving; those small amounts won’t do anything for joints, or for intervertbral disc health”, he says. “SLIDE™ works as good as it does because it contains 5,000 mg of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid per recommended daily serving. That’s 4,800 mg MORE hyaluronic acid per day than the average equine supplement containing hyaluronic acid. No other equine supplement with hyaluronic acid comes anywhere close to providing the amount of hyaluronic acid found in SLIDE™”.
According to Stewart, keeping joints healthy and pain free is all about maintaining and increasing lubrication inside joints. “Having sufficient lubrication within the joint is actually what protects the cartilage. It’s like the oil in your vehicle engine; it’s the oil that protects the moving parts. If there isn’t enough oil then the parts wear down faster and eventually disintegrate. Same thing goes for protecting joint cartilage, you have to keep sufficient lubrication in the joint at all times as that’s what protects the cartilage on the bone ends”.
He continues; “Hyaluronic acid is the major compound that creates synovial fluid, which is the lubrication found inside joints. Race and performance horses need more joint support and
lubrication than a horse ridden for pleasure because of the workloads they place on their joints. There are some really good horses that have had their competitive careers cut short due to joint damage. But it doesn’t have to be that way anymore if horse owners take a preventative approach using SLIDE™”.
In his 30 years of using high doses of hyaluronic acid Stewart has never seen any ill effects, just a multitude
of incredible therapeutic benefits. “Hyaluronic acid has a great safety profile. It’s water soluble and doesn’t build up or get stored in the body. It’s constantly being used up and replenished. In humans, our bodies naturally make 5,000 mg of hyaluronic acid per day when we’re in our 20’s, but internal production begins to decline dramatically in our 30’s. At age 50, our bodies are only making 2,500 mg a day of hyaluronic acid; just half the amount it made when we were
in our 20’s. And at age 75, we only have one quarter the amount of hyaluronic acid in our body that we had in our 20’s”, he points out. “It’s no wonder our joints and intervertebral discs fall apart and we get joint and low back pain as we get older; there’s not enough hyaluronic acid being produced by our bodies anymore in order to maintain sufficient lubrication in our joints or the gel-like fluid inside the discs of the spine. Don’t kid yourself that there isn’t a correlation between
From previous page
hyaluronic acid levels and cartilage and intervertebral disc degeneration as we age - there is”.
Stewart maintains the same holds true for wrinkles and crepey skin as people grow older, that there isn’t sufficient amounts of hyaluronic acid in the body to keep the dermis and epidermis nourished and healthy. “If you bring your hyaluronic acid levels back up you’ll see some magical things begin to happen. I personally take 2,800 mg of hyaluronic acid every single day and I have no joint or back pain and great skin and I’m 60 years old”.
Stewart says the hyaluronic acid supplements currently on the market for people are no better than existing equine supplements. “Depending on the brand you buy the daily recommended amount of hyaluronic acid is 100 to 200 mg a day; basically about the same amount as most equine supplements recommend. These amounts are way too low to see any noticeable benefits. If you’re 50 or older and your daily internal production of hyaluronic acid is down by 2,500 mg or more from what your body produced in your 20’s, do you really think you’re going to see great results on 100 or 200 mg a day? No, you’re not. I have long maintained that hyaluronic acid is the ‘fountain of youth’ nutrient that mankind has long been searching for, but you have to take enough of it if you want to see real benefits”.
A palatable powder that horses eat right up, SLIDE™ isn’t just hyaluronic acid, it’s a joint supplement unlike anything ever put on the market for horses. The two recommended daily servings not only provide your horse with an incredible, industry leading 5,000 mg of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid per day, but also 5,000 mg of N-acetyl glucosamine (a precursor for hyaluronic
acid synthesis), 5,000 mg of glucosamine HCL, 5,000 mg of hydrolyzed collagen and 2,000 mg of unhydrolyzed collagen type II (this is the major collagen found in articular cartilage and intervertebral discs of the spine. SLIDE™ is the only equine hyaluronic acid supplement that contains this im-portant form of collagen). None of the ingredients are banned substances for equine competition.
SLIDE™ also provides many other great health benefits for horses besides joint support, including helping heal and prevent ulcers. We encourage you to read the SLIDE™ equine and human eBooks online at slidejointcare.com as it describes in detail what makes SLIDE™ the premier hyaluronic acid joint supplements in the world today. It’s well worth the read and full of great information many people don’t know about hyalu-ronic acid.
Now affordably priced so equine owners and trainers can reap its incredible benefits on their own horses, SLIDE™ is available in 4.4 lb ($120.00 USD) and 22
lb ($400.00 USD) sizes. The larger size is an incredible value and treats 5 horses for 30 to 60 days for just $40.00 to $80.00 USD per horse depending on whether it’s fed once or twice daily. Even with just a single daily serving, SLIDE™ still provides far more hyaluronic acid (2,500 mg a day) than any other equine supplement containing this important and vital compound for equine health and well-being.
SLIDE™ is also available in human ($60.00 USD) and canine ($70.00 USD) versions, both contain the highest amounts of hyaluronic acid you will find in any human or canine HA supplement on the market today.
SLIDE™ is available at your local tack store on online at www.SlideJointCare.com

Celebrating Tradition Through Learning and Connection
At the Art of the Cowgirl event, hosted at Rancho Rio in Wickenburg, Arizona, a vibrant convergence of tradition and talent takes center stage. This highly anticipated gathering, running from February 25 to March 1, 2025, offers an array of workshops and clinics designed to preserve and promote the skills, arts, and trades that define the Western lifestyle. With expertled clinics ranging from colt starting to leatherwork and photography, participants are provided with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the heritage of the cowboy and cowgirl way of life. All proceeds support the Art of the Cowgirl Foundation, which furthers the mission of fostering a diverse community of Western artisans.
Workshops & Clinics to Inspire Every Passion
The Be Unstoppable Clinic, sponsored by Yonder Horse, is a highlight for competitive equestrians. Led by Sandy Collier and Barbra Schulte, both accomplished professionals, the clinic offers options for both a single-day classroom session and an intensive two-day experience with riding practice. Riders learn techniques to improve their showing performance and gain the mental edge needed to succeed.
Artisans and craft enthusiasts can explore leather belt making with Chelsea Sazama from Rocking S Saddle Shop or learn the delicate skill of bosal braiding with Bill and Teresa Black. Meanwhile, Cara Brewer hosts both adult and youth cutting clinics, providing riders with an opportunity to refine their cutting horse techniques under expert guidance. Younger participants, aged 8 to 18, will benefit from personalized coaching as Cara meets each rider at their level.
For those interested in building their horse-handling skills, Tom and Trina Curtin’s Colt Starting Clinic is a must-attend event. Over three days, participants work with their young horses, learning techniques to start them safely and effectively under saddle. Those with a spirit for adventure can join Lisa Barnes in her Recreational Packing clinic, mastering the skills needed for backcountry travel without prior experience.
Creative Arts and Business Workshops
The creative arts also have a strong presence at Art of the Cowgirl. Shawn Cameron and Cassie Waggoner lead a painting class, diving into color theory and hands-on application for aspiring artists. For writers, Joni and Olivia Harms guide attendees in the Western Writer’s Workshop, where participants explore songwriting, poetry, and storytelling, while Jolyn Young’s Memoir Writing workshop helps individuals craft and preserve their personal stories.
For entrepreneurs and professionals, Judy Wagner, a former CMO of Montana Silversmiths, presents her “Nice Job Cowgirl” Leadership Workshop, offering insights into brand building and professional development.
Photography enthusiasts will find inspiration in the Photography Retreat with Kimberly Beer and Phyllis Burchett, which combines horse photography techniques with business training. Thompson Takes All-Around Crown in the WPRA
By Joe Kusek
Haiden Thompson estimates she has won 75 championship saddles during her still ascending rodeo career. She’s kept a few that are close to her heart, sold a few and given away some to younger rodeo competitors. When you and your seven siblings are all heavily involved in rodeo, saddle space is at a premium around the family homestead. But this most recent acquisition, it’s a keeper.
While Thompson backed in the box for cash runs, her sister Hadley was caring for the other horses.
Displaying roping and racing skills in four different disciplines, Thompson won the all-around title at the WPRA World Finals, Nov. 7-10 at Extraco Events Center in Waco, Texas.
“Winning that saddle put that saddle definitely at the top of the list,” she said. “A very special win to me.”
Competing on her permit, the 21-year-old Yoder, Wyoming cowgirl earned money in team roping heeling, tie-down roping, breakaway roping and barrel racing for $7,084.
It was enough to edge Cadee Williams of Big Timber, Montana by $307. Williams won the National Finals Breakaway Roping average title in 2022 and the National High School breakaway roping crown in 2008.
Kenzie Kelton, of Mayer, Ariz., was third with $4,355. Thompson and Kelton were team roping partners in Waco and Kelton won her first world title being crowned as WPRA World Champion Team Roping – Header.
“It was kind of a shock to win,” said Thompson, who was the College National Finals Rodeo all-around champion for Gillette College in 2023. “They were announcing the places and said Kenzie was third, Cadee second … no way they were going to announce my name right now.
“It was a thrill. I’ve worked so hard for this all my life. It’s not every often you get to be a world champion.”
Competing at her first WPRA World Finals, Thompson earned $2,184 in breakaway roping, $2,030 in tie-down roping, $1,466 in barrel racing and $1,402 in team roping. Along with winning money in every event, she also won a round in team roping, breakaway roping and tie-down roping.
“I was moving in every direction. I had to just jump, jump, jump,” Thompson said with a laugh about competing in multiple events. “Being my first time there, I didn’t know what to expect. Just make every run a good one. It was being in the moment and being consistent. You have to be mentally prepared for each event. You can’t be down about the last one.
“I’m pretty good about letting things go. Five minutes and it’s done. I move on pretty quick. Go for the round money. It’s easier said than done, not to be worrying about anything else.”
“All my life, my family has been supportive,” said Thompson, who is the third of eight children. “I couldn’t be where I am today without family support. You can’t do it alone.”
The all-around didn’t just happen that weekend.
“It’s all the work put in prior to the event,” she said. “There is a lot of preparation. We practiced all day, every day. You put in the hard work, you get good results.”
Thompson competed on her own horses, Foxie and Tom, in breakaway roping and rode borrowed horsepower for the other events.
“Oh man, I love them all. I have a blast,” Thompson said of her favorite event. “But I have to say I like breakaway roping the most. In team roping, there are so many parts. With breakaway roping, it’s you, your horse and of course, it takes a little bit of luck.”
Rodeo is the fabric that binds the Thompson family. Her parents, Thorpe and Shelly, have always been heavily involved with the Wyoming High School Rodeo Association. Thompson tagged along with older sisters Jamie and Jacey in her early years.
“I picked it up from them,” said Thompson, who was homeschooled through high school. “When I was seven, I started Little Britches Rodeo. The first finals, I won four saddles and 25 buckles. It was fun from that day on. I love winning.”
Thompson was a four-time qualifier for the National High School Finals Rodeo and three-time qualifier for the National Junior High Finals Rodeo.
That competitiveness goes beyond the arena.
“Oh, we’re 100 percent competitive,” she said with another laugh. “Very competitive with family … who wakes up first in the morning … everything is a competition.”
Thompson’s 2025 will be a balance of finishing her business degree online, “Pull up the trailer and pull out the homework,” and chasing her professional rodeo dreams. Thompson has a big lead in the Central Rocky Mountain Region all-around cowgirl standings with points in goat tying, team roping, breakaway roping and barrel racing.
“I definitely want to make the Finals and win rookie of the year,” she said. “In rodeo, there are lots of ups and downs. Rodeo is very humbling. You just have to get back in the saddle.
“The (all-around) win gives me lots of confidence. I love it.”
IT’S OFFICIAL: STETSON WRIGHT IS BACK
By Alex Dodd, PRCA Media Reporter
After missing in action for over 13 months, Stetson Wright left no doubt that he’s back during his return at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo on Friday night in Denver.
Wright arrived at the Denver Coliseum on Thursday without a spot on the daysheet, hoping to fill the place of a turnout.
Everything went according to plan on Friday, and Wright made the most of his first appearance at a PRORODEO event since receiving a doctor’s release at the 2023 National Finals Rodeo.
Wright paired with The Cervi Brothers’ Heyoka for an 89-point ride, the highest-scored trip of the round.
“My feelings are kind of going everywhere,” Wright said after the performance. “I’ve talked to almost everybody in my family in the short period since I got off. I keep telling them that every ride feels like I won the world.”
Wright suffered a hamstring injury late in the 2023 season and was released from the 2023 NFR after Round 2. Shortly thereafter, he underwent surgery to repair the injury, and his recovery took longer than initially expected.
completely fine with it.
“I wasn’t worried about much more than making sure I was healthy again. So, that’s how I went about this, and it’s made me more mentally sharp than ever. I feel as good as I ever have, and I’m just ready to go.”
“The past 13 or 14 months have been a roller coaster of emotions,” Wright said ahead of the opening round of the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo. “I’m sad that I haven’t been able to ride, but there was a lot for me to be grateful for. There aren’t many cowboys and cowgirls who can take 14 months off and be
Wright holds eight PRCA World Championships with five all-around titles from 2019-23, two bull riding championships in 2020 and 2022 and one saddle bronc gold buckle in 2021.
But despite his success, the 25-year-old from Beaver, Utah, had difficulty entering winter rodeos because of his year-long hiatus.
“I wasn’t even meant to be in Denver,” Wright said. “I walked up and ended up drawing one of the best bulls here. I knew that if I was going to have a chance to ride him because he’s pretty gassy, I needed to be as healthy as I’ve ever been.”
On Saturday night, Wright also received a spot in the daysheet in the saddle bronc riding. He earned a 73-point ride in the first round and a 77.5-point trip in the second round.
“The only question I’ve seen lately is, is he going to ride bulls and saddle broncs? And I will be back in both,” Wright said. “It’s just because the way they’ve been entering me and splitting me up that you’ve only seen me compete in one or the other.
“But I’m still after the triple crown. That’s the number one thing on my mind. I’m 100% back. I’m healthy and there are no excuses now.”

“This Right Here is Reining.” NRHA to Unveil New Branding Campaign
During his address at the Annual General Membership meeting held in conjunction with the Leadership Gathering, NRHA Commissioner Billy Smith is set to reveal a sneak preview of the association’s new branding campaign, “This Right Here is Reining.”
Last year, NRHA partnered with the Cornett Agency, an awardwinning advertising agency whose portfolio includes clients such as Keeneland, A&W, Lego, and General Electric.
To prepare, the agency did significant research, including
interviewing our members, fans, staff, and leadership.
“Their proven track record within the equine industry was a no-brainer, and the insight we gained from their data collection was invaluable. The direct
feedback from our members on what tools and resources they desired were directly incorporated into the campaign,” Smith said.
The full campaign, set to be unveiled in March, will feature a complete overhaul of NRHA’s social media, website, and promotional materials, including videos that will appear on television across the United States of America.
“The main goal of this campaign was to capture that segment of the market we were missingwhile increasing value for our members and sponsors,” Smith continued. “Expect a modern refresh of our brand while remaining true to our western roots.”
The association’s current Strategic Plan was a driving force behind the campaign, with leadership acknowledging that it was imperative that NRHA create a true marketing strategy to help achieve its objectives.
“A huge thank you to our executive committee, board of directors, and the NRHA Professionals Advisory Committee in their support of this campaign,” Smith added. “The Association has never seen anything like this before. This has been a long time coming, and we look forward to sharing more with the membership soon.”
New HPA Rules 60-Day Postponement
The Horse Protection Act (HPA), enacted in 1970, is a federal law designed to prevent the inhumane practice of soring—deliberately inflicting pain on a horse’s limbs to enhance its gait. The Act prohibits sored horses from participating in shows, exhibitions, sales, or auctions and bans their transportation to or from such events.
In April 2024, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) announced amendments to the HPA regulations, aiming to strengthen enforcement and eliminate industry self-regulation. These changes included prohibitions on chemical soring, the use of action devices, stacks, and certain shoeing practices. The new regulations were initially set to take effect on February 1, 2025.
Definition of “Horse Show” Under the HPA
According to the updated Horse Protection Act (HPA), a horse show is defined as: “An event, competition, or exhibition where horses are evaluated based on performance, appearance, or gait. This includes, but is not limited to, shows, contests, rodeos, and other exhibitions conducted for entertainment, competition, or the awarding of prizes, monetary awards, or recognition.”
However, on January 24, 2025, APHIS announced a 60-day postponement of the implementation date, moving it to April 2, 2025. This delay was influenced by concerns from various stakeholders, including the American Horse Council (AHC), which formally requested the postponement. The AHC cited a lack of clarity, resources, guidance, and training necessary for fair and consistent enforcement as primary reasons for the delay. They emphasized the need for clearer guidelines, accessible information, and comprehensive training for inspectors to ensure successful implementation.
saddlehorsereport.com
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller also expressed concerns about the new regulations, labeling them as “heavyhanded” and indicative of federal overreach. He, along with other state agriculture leaders, urged the USDA to reconsider the rule’s implementation, leading to the announced postponement. texasagriculture.gov
The postponement provides additional time for stakeholders to address these concerns and work towards a more effective and transparent implementation of the HPA amendments. APHIS has stated that it will issue guidance to stakeholders for the upcoming horse show season in light of the postponement. aphis.usda.gov
As the new implementation date approaches, it remains crucial
for all involved parties to stay informed and engaged in discussions to ensure the humane treatment of horses and the fair enforcement of the Horse Protection Act.
Here are key updates to the Horse Protection Act
(HPA) provisions focusing on horse show
management and data management:
New Provisions for Horse Show Management
1. Mandatory Appointment of Horse Protection Inspectors (HPIs)
Horse show organizers are required to employ qualified HPIs who are USDA-certified to inspect horses for soring. These inspectors must operate independently, reducing conflicts of interest prevalent in past self-regulation practices.
2. Inspection Reports and Compliance
Show managers are responsible for ensuring full compliance with HPA regulations and for maintaining inspection reports. These reports must detail findings, including any evidence of soring, the number of horses inspected, and any penalties issued.
3. Increased Accountability
Horse show management can now face civil penalties if found negligent in enforcing anti-soring measures. This provision aims to motivate event organizers to take an active role in preventing soring practices.
4. Ban on Suspended Individuals
Horse shows must prevent any person who has been suspended under the HPA from participating or being involved in any capacity.
Data Management Provisions
1. Centralized Data Reporting
All horse show inspection data must be submitted to a centralized USDA database. This data will include: The list of participants Inspection results
Non-compliance reports and penalties
2. Public Access to Enforcement Data
The USDA plans to make compliance data publicly available, enhancing transparency. Horse owners, exhibitors, and show managers will be able to verify an event’s compliance status and any history of violations.
3. Real-Time Submission Requirements
Horse show organizers must submit inspection data within a specified timeframe, possibly within 24-48 hours of the event’s conclusion. This will streamline enforcement efforts by allowing USDA-APHIS to quickly analyze trends and issues.
4. Digital Recordkeeping Compliance
Show managers are now required to maintain digital inspection records for a specified period, likely between 3 to 5 years. This ensures a reliable audit trail for USDA inspections and compliance reviews.
5. Inspector Certification Database
The USDA will maintain a database of certified Horse Protection Inspectors (HPIs), allowing show managers to verify the certification status and history of inspectors. These provisions aim to improve enforcement effectiveness and provide greater oversight while encouraging the humane treatment of horses at competitive events. The emphasis on transparent data management and accountability reflects the USDA’s goal of eliminating industry self-regulation and ensuring full compliance with the Horse Protection Act.

Records Shattered: Celebrating the Bright Future of Agriculture at the 2025 Auction of Junior Livestock Champions
DENVER, CO. – A sold-out crowd filled the auction arena for the 2025 Auction of Junior Livestock Champions, presented by BOK Financial. This year’s Grand and Reserve Grand Champions highlighted the promising future of the livestock industry, further solidifying the event as a cor-
nerstone of agricultural excellence.
Emotion ran high as the bidding for the 2025 Grand Champion Steer soared to a record-breaking $210,000, leaving the crowd visibly moved. This surpassed the previous record set in 2023 when the Grand Champion
Steer drew $200,000. Five out of the top eight animals set records including the Reserve Grand Champion Steer selling for an impressive $125,000, topping the former record of $100,000.
The generosity of the buyers was on full display as the sale totals were tallied. The top eight champion animals collectively sold for a new record of $637,000, surpassing the previous record of $585,000 set in 2023. This remarkable display of support underscores the community’s commitment to fostering the growth of young agricultural talent and the continued success of the Junior Livestock Auction during the National Western Stock Show.
The monies go directly to the junior exhibitors who raised the animals, helping to support their agricultural careers and college education. A portion of the proceeds also benefits the National Western Scholarship Trust, which provides scholarships for agriculture studies and rural medicine at colleges across Colorado and Wyoming. This year, 110 students received financial support for their education.
Grand Champion Steer
Madilyn Norvell, 14, of Tuttle, OK, took home top honors with her steer, Thunder, named after her favorite basketball team, the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Grand Champion Steer sold for a record $210,000 to Hutchison Western, in honor of the late Buck Hutchison, founding member of the Junior Livestock Action and a devoted supporter of youth in agriculture. Madilyn’s love for livestock showing began at age 5, inspired by her parents, who are both champion exhibitors. After high school, Madilyn plans to attend Oklahoma State University, join the livestock judging team, and eventually pursue a career as an agricultural lobbyist.

Unpasteurized milk testing in effort to tackle H5N1 in dairy cattle
The USDA is collecting raw milk samples as part of its National Milk Testing Strategy to address bird flu
A new federal order issued by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is mandating that raw, or unpasteurized, milk samples nationwide now be collected and shared with
the agency for testing. The new order adds to the USDA’s National Milk Testing Strategy (NMTS), which expands on efforts by the USDA and federal and state partners since the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in dairy cattle in March 2024.
Raw milk samples be shared, upon request, from any entity responsible for a dairy farm, bulk milk transporter, bulk milk transfer station, or dairy processing facility that sends
or holds milk intended for pasteurization. Herd owners with positive cattle provide epidemiological information that enables activities like contact tracing and disease surveillance.
Private laboratories and state veterinarians report positive results to the USDA that come from tests done on raw milk samples drawn as part of the NMTS.
Mandatory testing of lactating cows before interstate
shipment will still be required. Additionally, privately owned laboratories and state veterinarians must still report positive test results linked to the corresponding tests.
“Since the first HPAI detection in livestock, USDA has collaborated with our federal, state and industry partners to swiftly and diligently identify affected herds and respond accordingly. This new milk testing strategy will build on those steps to date and will provide a roadmap for states to protect the health of their dairy herds,” said Tom Vilsack, Agriculture secretary, in a USDA release.

This class makes its AQHA show debut at at the 2025 Sun Circuit and gives English division horses and riders the opportunity to do something fun and different. Circuit awards will be presented in Non Pro and Open.
As a pattern class, it requires maneuvers that are related to working hunter, equitation over fences and equitation on the flat. It requires a forward moving horse ridden with light contact. While appealing to all riders who want to expand their skill set and training regime, English Versatility is also great for people who don’t necessarily want to jump but would like to do something challenging with poles.

The Heart of the Desert: Lost Dutchman Days Rodeo Returns to Apache Junction
In the shadow of the towering Superstition Mountains, where legends of hidden gold echo through the desert air, a different kind of treasure awaits—one of tradition, adrenaline, and community spirit. Apache Junction’s iconic Lost Dutchman Days Rodeo is gearing up for another spectacular run from February 21 to 23, 2025, bringing the best of western rodeo culture to the heart of Arizona.
For over six decades, this event has been a cornerstone of local heritage, transforming Apache Junction into a bustling hub of cowboys, cowgirls, and spectators eager to witness raw talent and the grit of professional rodeo competitors. Sanctioned by the Grand Canyon Professional Rodeo Association (GCPRA), this year’s rodeo promises thrills, family entertainment, and unforgettable moments.
striving to set the fastest time.
Each of these events honors the skills born from ranch life and celebrates the traditions of the American West.
Spotlight Performer: Bella Da Costa
Adding to the excitement is a performance by Bella Da Costa, a world-renowned trick rider whose breathtaking stunts have captivated audiences around the globe. With unmatched agility and horsemanship, Bella will perform daring feats that blend speed, balance, and acrobatics in a way that defies gravity and expectations. Her presence at Lost Dutchman Days underscores the event’s commitment to showcasing the very best in western entertainment.
More Than Just a Ro-
Lost Dutchman Days isn’t just about competition—it’s a full-scale festival where the whole community comes together.
The Main Event Center at 1590 E. Lost Dutchman Blvd. will offer free entertainment, a carnival, and vendor booths throughout the weekend. Gates open daily at 9:00 AM, with plenty of activities to keep families entertained. The Lost Dutchman Days Parade, a beloved annual tradition, will take place on Saturday, February 22, at 9:00 AM, filling downtown Apache Junction with colorful floats, marching bands, and local pride.
A Rodeo Like No Other
Each day at 1:30 PM, the gates of the Apache Junction Rodeo Grounds will swing open to a lineup of elite rodeo events. Spectators will be treated to classic competitions that have defined the western frontier for generations.
Bull Riding: The ultimate test of nerves and balance, as cowboys face off against 1,500 pounds of pure muscle. Hanging on for 8 seconds has never seemed so long—or so dangerous.
Saddle Bronc and Bareback Riding: Two events that showcase a rider’s mastery of a bucking horse, with or without a saddle. These events are a mesmerizing dance of raw power and skill.
Calf Roping and Breakaway Roping: Precision is key as cowboys and cowgirls race against the clock to rope a calf in seconds flat. In breakaway roping, a quick-release system ensures a swift and clean run, rewarding those with the fastest hands and horses.
Steer Wrestling: Known as “bulldogging,” this event requires riders to leap from their galloping horse onto a running steer and wrestle it to the ground—an impressive display of speed, timing, and raw strength.
Team Roping: In a beautiful display of partnership, two riders— one “header” and one “heeler”—work together to rope both the steer’s horns and hind legs in perfect synchronization.
Barrel Racing: Heart-pounding speed takes center stage as cowgirls race their horses around a cloverleaf pattern of barrels,
Tickets and Information
Advance tickets are available at the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce for just $18 (adults) and $13 (youth). Tickets at the door will also be available, but advanced purchase is recommended. Proceeds from the rodeo benefit local youth charities, ensuring that this event continues to support and strengthen the Apache Junction community.
For those who want to get even more out of their experience, carnival wristbands—offering access to over 30 rides and attractions—are available for pre-sale at $30 from the Chamber, or $45 at the event.
Keeping Tradition Alive
Lost Dutchman Days is more than just a weekend of entertainment—it’s a celebration of Apache Junction’s roots and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Old West. From the roar of the crowd to the pulse of pounding hooves, the rodeo embodies the courage, resilience, and camaraderie that continue to define this remarkable community.
So saddle up and join us for a weekend of unforgettable excitement. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a first-time visitor, the Lost Dutchman Days Rodeo will leave you with memories as rich as the legends of the Superstition Mountains.
Wildfire preparedness publication to aid Ranch preparation, livestock, risk management
By Blair Fannin
A new publication released by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service aims at helping landowners take preventive measures to mitigate the impact of wildfires.
Wildfire: Preparing the Ranch is an online educational resource debuting at Fire and Rangeland Management Symposiums in the Texas Panhandle. The first event was in Pampa on Jan. 21 and a second event will be in Canadian on Feb. 13. The resource is designed to equip Texas agricultural producers with educational information and tools to prepare for wildfires.
The publication includes information on identifying early or intense wildfire environments, risk management, infrastructure protection, livestock evacuation and a wildfire preparation checklist.
The publication draws on the expertise of AgriLife Extension specialists, the agency’s Disaster Assessment and Recovery agents, and the Texas A&M Forest Service – all part of The Texas A&M University System.
Actionable, proactive steps
“Landowners and producers understand Mother Nature better than anyone else,” said Morgan Treadwell, Ph.D., lead author, AgriLife Extension range specialist, San Angelo, and professor in the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management.
“This publication was created to supplement existing producer knowledge and present science- and experience-based actionable, proactive steps and strategies,” Treadwell said. “This will serve as a one-stop shop in living and ranching with the reality of wildfire conditions.”
More than 1.2 million acres burned in the Texas Panhandle beginning in late February 2024, making it the largest wildfire in Texas history. Initial loss estimates were $123 million in short-term losses, including more than 12,000 cattle deaths, lost grazing values and fence repair costs, according to AgriLife Extension economists.
“Just as land stewards set goals for habitat and forage production, with this publication we can realize and implement the prioritization of wildfire preparation along every step of the grazing management process,” Treadwell said.
“We can’t just live by the traditional wildfire season anymore,” she said. “We need to read the pastures, landscapes and plant communities and understand how the ranch management strategy fits into the big picture, which inevitably includes wildfire.”
Developing a plan
Treadwell said ranchers should develop a year-round plan based on environmental conditions, similar to how they manage grazing and livestock.
“Most ranchers and producers have a plan and very successfully execute each step that prepares their operation based on conditions and short- and long-term outlooks,” she said.
“Whether preparing for drought, extreme heat, cold weather, calving, branding or weaning, we can do the same for our communities and our ranching operations when it comes to the threat of wildfire. This publication is a starting place for those conversations and, hopefully, actions.”
