“He was not like other boys…. He did not see the world through the same eyes as us” A boy called Tony struggles to fit in and find his place. He has a different way of looking at the world and longs to retreat to a place where he can be ‘nothing more than small and far off’. Those surrounding him have little patience for his dreams, with the exception of his mother who will do anything to ensure his happiness. The Boy At The Edge of the Room is a fairytale for adults, inspired by Lucy Clifford’s 1882 story Wooden Tony. It focuses on a character who displays many of the classic traits of those on the autistic spectrum. It is a moving examination of difference and acceptance, brought to life through song, movement and puppetry. From the company that brought “The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase”. A hideously funny black farce in which four friends are slowly stripped of all their pretensions and secrets until nothing is left but the truth. A full moon rises over a remote windswept cottage. The children are in bed… the wine is breathing and supper is in the Aga. It’s Gordon and Celia’s wedding anniversary. They’ve asked their oldest and dearest friends Zach and Jane down from London for the weekend. The only problem is that Julia – a twenty five year old, French burlesque dancer, has taken Jane’s place. The celebration becomes a nightmare as revelations unfurl until we become aware that no one has been telling the truth to anyone about anything for a very long time. The Incomers will have you gasping and roaring with laughter in equal measures!

Critically acknowledged as Britain’s finest blues and boogie pianist, Bob Hall first came to fame in the rhythm ‘n’ blues explosion of the sixties, as a founder member of The Groundhogs. He has played with many of the greats including Alexis Korner, Spencer Davis, John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf and Chuck Berry. He appears with Hilary Blythe who provides crystal-clear vocals and rock-steady bass.

Award winning multi instrumentalist Charlotte Glasson (saxophones, flute, violin, melodica, saw) plays a lively and uplifting mix of world jazz, combining Latin, Ska, New Orleans, African and eastern influences. Her band has released 5 CDs to great acclaim and features the legendary guitarist Chris, and Mark Bassey on trombone, Dave Holdsworth on sousaphone and trumpet and Sam Glasson on drums.

The iconic sound and image of the Blue Note record label in the 50s and 60s pioneered “hard bop”, mixing jazz with soul, blues and gospel. The Sound of Blue Note band faithfully recreates this vibrant music as it would have been heard ‘back in the day’.

She is currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has three major performances lined-up with the London Handel Festival in 2013.

Toby Kearney won the percussion section of the 2006 BBC Young Musician of the Year. He returns to the West Country with Harvey Davies to form an exciting and dynamic percussion duo – not to be missed.

From Oxford University to the Royal Academy of Music cellist Gavin Kibble is already making a name for himself while only in his second year specialising in performance. The quartet will perform repertoire of the 16th and 17th Centuries.

Sunday 20 Jan, Time TBC Tickets: £4 Adult/FREE to members of Bridport Film Society In the rural area around the Anatolian town of Keskin, the local prosecutor, police commissar, and doctor lead a search for a victim of a murder to whom a suspect named Kenan and his mentally challenged brother confessed. However, the search is proving more difficult than expected. As the group continues looking, its members can’t help but chat among themselves about both trivia and their deepest concerns in an investigation that is proving more trying than any of them expected. At 157 mins long, Bridport Film Society felt it was too long to be shown in their usual Tuesday evening slot but also too mesmerising not to show it at all – We very much hope that you will accept the challenge of the length of a film!

LAURENCE RUSHBY A THOUSAND SHEEP

Saturday 2 – Saturday 30 Mar During the past two years Laurence Rushby has been resident artist at the River Bourne Community Farm, Salisbury, where she has been developing A Thousand Sheep. The installation is made from sheep fleece collected locally and regionally and processed on the farm. It aims to find a new way to represent our local landscape shaped by two basic human needs, food and safety, represented by farming and the military. The installation comprises 1000 bundles of wool, symbolising the sacrifice of lives that is inherent to the defence of physical, moral, religious and social boundaries across the world. As part of the residency, more than 500 children including those from army families and recovering soldiers took part in the shaping of the bundles, enclosing in some a personal message, tribute or wish for the earth, for peace or for respect. The exhibition focuses on the Semana Santa Easter processions in Seville, with further images around non-religious celebrations in France and the UK. Wednesday 20 Feb, 7.30pm The opportunity to take your script from page to air – be part of the process that turns your play into an on air Radio Drama. Learn to direct, perform and produce your script for radio or podcasting. This will be taught in one session at Bridport Arts Centre plus a recording session at Bournemouth University with the MA Radio Production students led by course leader Jo Tyler. Plays will be broadcast on the award winning station birst.co.uk in June 2013 and on any future Bridport FM station.

BRIDPORT FM UPDATE Further to the success of Bridport FM, our temporary radio station that broadcast a week of programmes from the Arts Centre in September, volunteers decided our aim should be to host another radio week as part of Bridport Arts Centre’s 40th anniversary celebrations. Marlow Theatre A charming listed building occupying a prime site in the centre of Bridport, the Arts Centre makes an ideal venue for weddings, conferences (1–3 days), lectures, demonstrations, AGM’s and, of course, staged musical and theatrical productions. There is ample public parking nearby and improved disabled access.

We will be doing further consultation with our key audiences and stakeholders, so do look out for opportunities to contribute your thoughts and ideas, which will be vital to make a strong case to the major funders.
