PROJECT OVERVIEW
CONCEPT Beyond Boundaries
Advance is a training and learning career center for unemployed older men and women ages 4570. The mission of the program is to empower the unemployed with community and professional connections, an enhanced array of skill sets, and to prepare them for the competitive job market.
One must go beyond personal boundaries when seeking improvement, new challenges, and change. The program encourages the user to achieve higher goals and go beyond their self-expectations to acquire new skills, knowledge, professional connections, and career opportunities. Outreach is the user’s underlying goal, to expand their improved services into the community among their neighbors and local businesses. Educators and business professionals go beyond the expectations of traditional career education by providing applicable knowledge and skills to the student user through a hands on learning approach.
The location of the program is the Romana Riley Elementary school on Waters Avenue and Anderson Street. Located in a developing residential area of lower-class housing, the school was built in 1908 as a public school for the neighborhood children. Serving as a public school until the late 1980s, the building currently stands vacant and for sale.
