Are you ready to be a part of the story?
A club is a place where kindred spirits gather to have fun and make friends. A club is a place expressly for camaraderie, merriment, good will, and good cheer. It humbles the mighty and draws out the timid. And a club is one of the noblest inventions of mankind.
ROBERT H. DEDMAN,
1926-2002
Founder of Invited
The story of Mission Hills begins in the heart of Rancho Mirage, surrounded by rolling sand dunes and the purple mountains of the San Jacinto, Santa Rosa, and Little San Bernardino ranges. A vision for world-class golf and tennis brought together tribal leaders, entrepreneurs, and investors, giving birth to Mission Hills Country Club in 1971.
Recently ranked the No. 1 course in the valley, the Dinah Shore Tournament Course has been home to the LPGA Kraft Nabisco Tournament since its inception in 1972. While talented golfers usually try to avoid water hazards, it’s become tradition for the tournament winner to take the honorary “Champion’s Leap” into the water surrounding the 18 Green after the final round. The tradition started in 1988 when Amy Alcott took the first celebratory dive into Poppy’s Pond. Over the years, the Club has been the epicenter of major golf events, including the recent PGA TOUR Champions tournament, The Galleri Classic.
In the late ‘70s, Mission Hills became synonymous with top-notch tennis, hosting the Davis Cup and attracting legends like John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova. The ‘80s ushered in a new era, marked by growth, youth tennis academies, and accolades.
In 2023, Mission Hills embraced the pickleball craze, becoming a hotspot for the PPA Tour: The Masters. The mid-’90s saw a resurgence of croquet, with Mission Hills honored as the Club of the Year by the United States Croquet Association in 2004.
In 1952, Dora Joyce Weimas, an Agua Caliente Tribal Member, lobbies in Washington D.C. for the Equalization Bill and the 99-Year Land Lease Act. In 1959, Congress passes the bill, equalizing property values and allowing 99-year leases for the tribe. In 1965, Max Genet collaborates with tribal members to secure leases for the 640 acres needed for Mission Hills Country Club. In 1968, iconic golf course designer Desmond Muirhead builds would become the Dinah Shore Tournament Course. In 1969, construction on the first 50 homes and original clubhouse begins.
In 1971, Mission Hills celebrates its grand opening. David Foster, President and CEO of Colgate Palmolive Co., announces a new LPGA tournament hosted by entertainer Dinah Shore at the Club. In 1972, Jane Blalock wins the inaugural Colgate-Dinah Shore Winners Circle tournament. In 1974, Colgate Palmolive Co. acquires Mission Hills Country Club. The Desert Putters Association is founded by Florence Berman.
In 1978, the prestigious Davis Cup is held at the Club. American tennis player, John McEnroe leads the U.S. team to victory over Great Britain. In 1979, the Arnold Palmer Signature Course opens – Arnie’s first in the desert. In 1989, the Dinah Shore Course opens; it woudl later be renamed the Pete Dye Challenge Course. Amy Alcott jumps into the lake on Hole 18 beginning one of the greatest traditions in golf...the Jump into Poppy’s Pond.
In 1991, Invited purchases Mission Hills Country Club. In 1994, the Club mourns the loss of legendary Member Dinah Shore. In 2004, Mission Hills Croquet Club is honored by the United States Croquet Association as “Club of the Year”. Former President George H. W. Bush presents the Champions Trophy to Grace Park.
In 2006, the newly expanded Sports Club is opened at Mission Hills. The Davis Cup returns with the U.S. team of Andy Roddick, James Blake, and the Bryan Brothers. In 2015, All Nippon Airways becomes the title sponsor of the Championship and the tournament is renamed the ANA Inspiration. In 2016, Mission Hills Country Club celebrates its 45th Anniversary along with 44 continuous years of hosting an LPGA Major Championship.
