Isle of MTV Malta: An island becoming reminiscent of Ibiza at its first clubbing awakening Isle of MTV Malta: An island becoming reminiscent of Ibiza at its first clubbing awakening : MTV's annual bash is at the epicentre of a growing calendar of dance events in Malta The golden super-genii with the MC Hammer trousers and Gerald from Hey Arnold! hair should be declared the official mascot of the Maltese dance scene. High-kicking and stage-humping through a medley of ‘Let's Dance' and ‘Freedom' in the shadow of St Publius church lit up like a summer season Christmas tree, Cole Whittle, the gregarious bassist of DNCE, encapsulates the outlandish mania of MTV's annual Isle Of Malta dance-pop festival, and the jubilance of the summer clubland scene that's fast growing around it. Move over Balearics, the Med tides are quaking to a volcanic new pulse. Malta - built by embattled medieval monks, hammered by Mediterranean war after Mediterranean war and better known for walking tours of battlements than torrents of twilit twerking - is fast becoming one of the hottest dance Meccas south of Salford. Tonight the DNCE genii is playing second on to The Chainsmokers at the MTV Isle Of Malta main event in The Granaries square just outside the fortified gates of capital city Valetta. Two days ago (in spirit at least) he was over at the Sunset Party at the swish Café Del Mar on St Paul's Bay where, as part of a week-long series of MTV dance events, DJ Kungs dropped liquid beats to an international crowd of ravers, swimwear strutters, oligarchs and local players crammed around an infinity pool beneath bursts of fireworks. Later tonight, the crowd shifts across the island to Uno Village, where the festival after party gyrates til dawn to Jonas Blue. Isle Of Malta is the party that refuses the quit. MTV's annual bash, now in its eleventh year on the island having drawn major acts such as Wiz Khalifa, Hardwell, Dizzee Rascal, Lady Gaga, David Guetta and will.i.am to previous events, making the island reminiscent of Ibiza at its first clubbing awakening. April saw Annie Mac host the Lost & Found festival featuring Dave and Heartless Crew ; September brings the second edition of local underground electrofest Glitch. Jon Hopkins, Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann will be rattling the windows of the nunneries and palaces of the ancient fortress city of Mdina and, this month, Pete Tong will be hosting two-day music industry workshops for the legions of burgeoning local DJs and producers. "In the past couple of years," Tong told Easyjet Traveller magazine, "the bookings in Malta have gotten more exciting and the news is reverberating around Europe and the world." No surprises there. Malta is undoubtedly amongst the most stress-free of dance tourism destinations. It's nightlife centre in the St Julian's district is buzzing but significantly more sophisticated and spew-free than most places you'll see on Sun, Sex And Suspicious Genital Growths, and it's surrounded by coastlines dotted with upmarket clubhouses and waterside bars. All summer, party boats head out to the crystal waters of the Blue Lagoon to rave or relax in its cavernous alcoves. By day you can sightsee your hangover away in Valetta's wide avenues, café squares and goldencrusted St John's Co-Cathedral, built and blinged up by 16th Century warrior monks, or hire a Rolling Geek, a talking electric car that not only directs you around the old forts and market squares of Malta's Three Cities but bombards you with historical facts as you go. By night the coastline comes alive with the expert mixology of the thriving local DJs, the heartbeat of this high-life waterside nirvana. Back at MTV Isle Of Malta, on a stage tangled with streamers and seemingly made entirely of psychedelic kaleidoscopes, Jonas Blue is busy pumping a crowd of 50,000 into a Tracey Chapman inspired frenzy. The tropical house of his debut single ‘Fast Car' gives way to full-on carnival rave on new single ‘Mama', playing out in a confetti snowstorm almost as spectacular as guest vocalist JP Cooper's floppy sun hat, which makes him look like Snoop Dogg in a Miami retirement home. DNCE arrive to the Star Wars theme, wearing Darth Vader helmets and having fights with crap plastic light sabres. It's a fitting entrance to a cartoonish set - with their wild genii bassist (Whittle), Animal drummer (Jack Lawless), uber-cool female guitarist (JinJoo Lee) and suave singer (Joe Jonas from out of The Jonas Brothers), they're basically a real-life Gorillaz, but with guest songs in place of guest vocalists. They mingle snippets of Bowie, George Michael, Britney and The Spice Girls tracks with their own material, veering from 23rd Century Village People pop to 60's go-go jivetronica and the odd frankly storming tune such as ‘Cake By The Ocean' and come out sounding, essentially, like the world's most entertaining broken jukebox. The Chainsmokers, on the other hand, are the boyband Disclosure. Occasionally roaming out of their video-screen DJ cube pumping out visuals of jiving Pac Men to sing auto-tuned choruses out on the ego ramp or stand on the decks and demand that Malta "get on our fucking level", they're livelier than your Aviciis and Guettas even if their tracks often slot too neatly into the standard EDM box marked ‘Carnival Car Horn'. Still, they're shifting the superstar DJ image away from funny helmets and be-stubbled men relying on the pyro for personality and towards your actual pop star look, and there's no denying their global crossover appeal – Maltese mayhem kicks off to the rave pop of ‘Closer' and their Coldplay collaboration ‘Something Just Like This', tonight seeping into a sliver of ‘Yellow'. The Chainsmokers light up one tune after another; there's something of a storm in heaven tonight. Malta's dance genii is out of the bottle.

Malta is more than just beaches and cheap breaks Malta is more than just beaches and cheap breaks : Often dismissed as a cheap getaway zone, Malta has culture and flair galoreIt will step centre stage next year when Valletta is European Capital of CultureValletta is one of the island country's unsung highlights, full of great eateries Gozo and Malta are to Roman Catholicism what Liverpool is to football. If you're not a churchgoer, you're the odd one out. During the big religious feasts, thousands take part in lengthy processions, dressed up as Gospel characters. Life-size statues are carried through the streets in solemn ceremonies that can last half a day. And it's not unusual to spot Pontius Pilate or Mary Magdalene having a quick ciggie outside a bar. Art on the horizon: Malta's capital Valletta will be European Capital of Culture in 2018 Overall, this sort of spectacle captures the essence of Malta, a tiny country just south of Sicily consisting of an archipelago of three inhabited islands: Malta (pop. 424,000), little Gozo and tiny Comino. During 164 years of British rule, the Maltese learned all about potatoes, stews and roasts. Cars drive on the left. Electric sockets are British-style. Many will proudly display a black-and-white photo of the country's most famous former resident, HM the Queen, but today's Maltese are republicans, ardent fans of Brussels and avidly preparing for their city Valletta to become European Capital of Culture in 2018. Everyone speaks English fluently, but locals speak to each other in Maltese, an Arabic language that uniquely uses the Roman alphabet. The word for Gozo is written Ghawdex, but pronounced 'owdesh'. The Italians have imported pizza and pasta and wine. Neighbouring Africa has given them a taste for couscous and spices. The local delicacy is fried rabbit. It's a kaleidoscope. And they seem to like children. We were two grown-ups and two children aged 14 and nine. You can please everyone by mixing sightseeing with activities. Funky cold Mdina: The ancient citadel of Mdina is another of Malta's essential sights There are six sights you can't miss. First, the Hypogeum, an underground burial site carved out of the rock more than 5,000 years ago. Second, St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, with its wonderful painting The Beheading Of Saint John The Baptist by Caravaggio. Third, the heart of Valletta, narrow, beautiful and old. Fourth, the ancient citadel of Mdina, if possible by night. Fifth, the three fortified cities of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua founded by the Order of Saint John in the 16th and 17th centuries. And, last, the neolithic temples of Gozo with their astonishing similarities to the thrilling new discovery of contemporary remains in Orkney at the Ness of Brodgar. These provide yet more evidence that humanity is smarter than we could ever believe and that 5,000 years ago there was a European civilisation to match the Egyptians. As for activities, one of the best is also the simplest: walking. Malta and Gozo are latticed by meandering footpaths. With our two boys, we walked nearly the entire Gozo coastline through dazzling carpets of clover, fennel, borage, dwarf irises, thyme, asparagus and wild snapdragons, stopping at beaches and examining the now-collapsed Azure Window that features in the film Clash Of The Titans and serves as the backdrop to the Dothraki wedding scene in the TV adaptation of Game Of Thrones. We swam in the chilly sea. Many others in wetsuits were scuba diving. Two of us one evening hired horses and rode through a scarlet valley of wild poppies. A peach of a beach: Paradise Bay, on Gozo, is one of Malta's many lovely beaches

Best of all, we met rock-climbing professional Stevie Haston, who can be booked through Gozo Adventures. With his lovely partner Alex, he cajoled the whole family up rough-hewn limestone cliff faces as if we all had Spider-Man's powers. Day trips to Gozo from Valletta are easy, with the car ferry only taking 20 minutes. On Gozo, make time to eat at what must be one of the most delicious, least pretentious restaurants in Europe, Ta' Philip, near the harbour, and make sure to try Gbejna tal-bzar, a sheep's milk cheese dried in a north wind, soaked in wine vinegar and preserved in pepper. Wash it down with a glass of Gozitan Vermentino. Marvellous. On our last night we went to a procession, one of Malta's most famous, in the village of Zejtun. The entire Bible seemed to come alive. Jesus, Pilate, Caesar, Saul, Salome, Abraham, Isaac and the goat. For an hour or so the children were spellbound. Suddenly, Herod looked distracted. Shimmying into the shadows he reached into his sleeve. I was sure it would be a dagger. But no, something more terrible: a Samsung smartphone. Travel Facts The InterContinental Hotel in St Julian's has doubles from ÂŁ112 a night (ihg.com). Flights to Malta cost from ÂŁ62 with EasyJet (easyjet.com). For more information, visit maltauk.com.
