Destination news from WTM 2017 Destination news from WTM 2017 : Antigua "The best way to support the re-building of Barbuda is to visit Antigua," said the island's new Minister of Tourism, Foreign Affairs and Immigration, the Honourable Henry Charles Fernandez. The Minister reported that Antigua is open for business having escaped the worst of Hurricane Irma. All hotels are open and since a few were previously closed for refurbishment the island's hotel stock is actually in better shape than ever. Hodges Bay Resort & Spa will open in early 2018. Cook Islands The Pacific destination's key objective is to talk to agents and they will continue getting out and about around the UK to increase awareness and knowledge of the destination. Next May will see the destination's first travel agent fam going out to the islands with Air New Zealand. Chicago Flight capacity to Chicago is increasing with new Norwegian flights to Chicago O'Hare launching from London in March and American Airlines upgrading its service Manchester to Chicago service with a new Boeing 787. The destination hopes the increase in capacity will boost long weekend stays and open the market. Fort Lauderdale The much-anticipated new Brightline train service connecting Miami to Fort Lauderdale will launch at the end of 2017. The high-speed rail service will cut the 40-minute drive time in half and will be a more scenic and cheaper way to travel between the two cities. The West Palm Beach-Fort Lauderdale-Miami service will form Brightline's Phase I. Phase II, which will extend the train service to Orlando, is currently scheduled to launch in 2020. Norweigen is increasing flights from London Gatwick direct to Fort Lauderdale to five times weekly with BA flights due to launch in July, 2018. Fort Myers & Sanibel The southwest Florida region escaped the worst of the hurricane season with minimal impact. The destination wants to shout about its green attractions and wildlife such as turtles, dolphins, manatees and migratory birds. Tamara Pigott, Executive Director of Lee County CVB says: "We are all about eco tourism and this is what makes us different from other sun and sea destinations." The region's turtle season runs from May to October and thanks to the absence of street lights nesting turtles have a high success rate. 70% of Sanibel Island is conserved and out of the region's other 100-odd islands only eight have accommodation. Looking ahead to 2018, ground has been broken on a new Marriott Autograph Collection property in downtown Fort Myers. Indonesia The country is looking to promote destinations beyond Bali for 2018. Alternatives agents could push include spectacular diving in Sulawesi's Wakatobi; trekking up active volcano Mount Bromo in Java; the beaches, diving and wildlife of Komodo Island; and Asia's largest lake - Lake Toba in Sumatra. Jordan The country is pushing experiential travel and wants to position itself as an authentic experience. "Our biggest resource is our people and our culture," said Mahmoud Freihat, Marketing Area Nanager, Jordan Tourism Board. "We want to help visitors to meet the locals and experience real Jordan by learning how to cook our food, make our crafts and experience our hospitality by booking into a homestay." Jordan's newest attraction is the J Trail, a 430 mile hiking trail from running between north and south through 52 communities and including Petra, the Dead Sea and Aqaba. The trail is signposted and can be undertaken with or without a guide. Accommodation along the route ranges from eco lodges and home stays to luxury hotels. Malta

The Malta Tourism Authority has re-launched its online training website for UK and Ireland travel agents– learnmalta.org. Every six months agents who complete the five-module-course will be entered into a competition to win a three-night break for two to Malta. Agents will also be entered into a monthly draw to win an iTunes voucher worth £50. easyJet have added an additional weekly flight to its Manchester-Malta route. Operating four times a week in winter and daily in summer, the capacity increase shows rising demand for Malta, which has been named as one of the top countries in the world to visit in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2018. Air Malta will be reintroducing flights from Manchester to Malta on a weekly basis throughout the summer, starting May, 1, until October, 16, 2018. Palm Springs The Southern Californian desert city is keen to communicate that it has changed a lot of the last five years. Mary Jo Ginther, Director, Palm Spring Bureau of Tourism, said: "The Coachella festival has shifted perceptions but many agents may not realise what Palm Springs is all about – we represent cocktail culture, an easy al fresco lifestyle and a vintage feel with our mid-century modernist architecture and we are attracting an increasingly sophisticated audience." The 144-room Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs opens soon with a rooftop bar, pool and restaurant offering city, desert and mountain views. An Andaz by Hyatt is under construction and will open in summer 2018. There are also plans for boutique brand Dream Hotel to open in the city Qatar Qatar is running a competition amplifying Qatar's ‘Welcome to The World' message, following the introduction of visa-free travel. Photographing one of the Qatar-branded taxis in London and sharing it on Twitter using the handle @visitqatar and #PassportToQatar will give you the chance to win flights for two to Qatar. Taiwan China Airlines is launching direct flights between Gatwick and Taipei from December 1. The four-times-weekly service will improve UK access alongside Eva Air's direct services from Heathrow. UK visitor numbers are up 10% this year and the tourist board is hoping to continue growth in 2018 with a focus on sustainable travel, particularly cycling holidays. A 968-kilometre bike trail circles the island through dramatic, mountainous topography and can be tackled year-round, while the 2018 Taiwan Cycling Festival kicks off in September and brings together multiple cycling events. The country is also looking to attract LGBT travellers after becoming the first Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage this year. Tenerife The collapse of Monarch has had an impact on the island's UK visitor base but it's hoped that Ryan Air and Jet2.com will take on some of the routes. Speaking at WTM, Alberto Bernabe Teja, Tenerife's Councillor for Tourism and Foreign Affair Area said perceptions of Tenerife were changing but work was still to be done: "One out of three visitors to Tenerife are British and they have been a top market for us for a long time but we have seen a change in the profile of visitors, " he said. "Our five-star segment has grown over the last ten years and the perception of Tenerife is changing. Every hotel being built currently is five-star and we have developed a new concept of leisure beyond them parks and beaches." The Councillor went on to talk about high-end experiences on the island including stargazing at Mount Teide paired with a Michelin-star dinner. The island will continue its ‘No Limits' marketing message to communicate the year-round sports and activities it offers including hiking and biking. The trade will have plenty of opportunities to visit Tenerife in 2018/19 as the tourist board is hoping to bring 1,000

WTM 2017: City breaks to Malta `booming'' WTM 2017: City breaks to Malta ‘booming' : Malta's tourism body is aiming to propel its capital Valletta into the "Premier League" of European city breaks. UK and Ireland director for Malta Tourist Office Peter Vella said city breaks were already "booming" with three-night stays the fastest growing type of holiday in Malta. The island has enjoyed a surge in overall tourist arrivals in the last three years and is set to report increased visitor numbers again this year. The UK is no exception: 560,000 Brits travelled to the archipelago in the central Mediterranean in 2016 and this is predicted to increase by 3% by the end of 2017. Valetta has been named the European Capital of Culture for 2018 which Vella said would raise Malta's profile further. "We have ambitions to escalate Veletta to the ‘Premier League' of European city break destinations," Vella said. Speaking at WTM this week, chief executive of Malta Tourism Authority Paul Bugeja said the island was finally starting to shake its reputation as only serving an older market. The number of 25-44-year-olds visiting increased 26% this year – the highest growing age range of tourists. Air capacity is being increased with a number of new routes launching from regional airports in 2018. Air Malta will reintroduce flights on a weekly basis from Manchester to Malta from May 1. The route was discontinued at the start of summer 2017 but was reversed in line with Air Malta's growth strategy. It is one a number of new routes to launch next summer. Ryanair will begin flying to the island with two weekly flights from both Aberdeen and Belfast. Jet2 will run one flight a week from Belfast and Birmingham and easyJet will fly twice weekly from Southend. Travel Weekly coverage of World Travel Market

Guaranteed sunshine, beautiful beaches, accommodation to suit all budgets and short flight times – what's not to like? Malta With its capital Valletta being crowned European Capital of Culture next year, Malta is in the spotlight. The destination combines the familiar sights of red telephone boxes and British stores with a unique culture, unspoilt countryside and a warm climate. Two distinct periods of rule – the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem and the British – have shaped the island's history and left a rich legacy of architecture and sights. Malta has traditionally appealed to a mature market, but its family-friendly beaches, watersports – including some of the best dive sites in the Med – outdoor activities, spas, cuisine, nightlife, festivals and range of accommodation including rustic farmhouses and boutique hotels make it ideal for all age-groups and tastes. The Tombs of the Kings, where underground burial chambers resemble vast homes, is the top sight. Also on the ‘must see' list is the ancient city kingdom of Kourion with its Greco-Roman theatre, while no visit is complete without taking a photo at Aphrodite's rock, where the goddess of love was said to have risen from the waves. Top tip: Animal lovers should head for Skarinou's Golden Donkeys Farm (goldendonkeys.com), between Larnaca and Limassol. It's home to 170 donkeys, once the island's main mode of transport. Spain The most popular destination for Brits, with magnets including buzzing Benidorm, the beautiful coastal city of Barcelona and the island of Mallorca, with enticing resorts and the elegant capital of Palma, need little introduction. For something new, suggest Alicante in Valencia, an up-and-coming region combining beach, sun and a glamorous lifestyle with historic and cultural sites. Travellers can experience the thrill of the Spanish Grand Prix with Shearings' (shearings.com) new 2018 tour. The 10-day half-board coach tour, departing May 8, is based in the resort of Santa Susanna and includes entry to both the qualifying rounds and race day near Barcelona. With the highest mountains and most rivers of any island in the Med, it's a great destination for visitors that want to combine chill-out time with activities like canyoning, rock climbing and hiking, plus watersports along its 620-mile coastline. Ajaccio, the capital, was the birthplace of Napoleon. Its 16th century old town is filled with pastel-coloured buildings. Aleria has the remains of a Roman town and winery, while Bastia is a quaint old port town. Top tip: Known as the ‘Mountain of the Sea', Corsica's highest point is 8,891ft Monte Cintu and 20 other mountains reaching more than 6,560ft. Where the experts holiday: Peter Vella, Director UK & Ireland at the Malta Tourism Authority Where the experts holiday: Peter Vella, Director UK & Ireland at the Malta Tourism Authority : Peter Vella is the director UK & Ireland at the Malta Tourism Authority and holds a dual nationality with Malta and the UK. Here he shares his favourite destinations and forthcoming trips with Just About Travel readers and reveals why you should visit Malta What do you like to do on holiday? I love to rent old converted farmhouses in Malta and Gozo to chill out, relax, entertain and soak up the sun. I am also slightly partial to the style of Mediterranean food and wine that you find there. The whole family also look forward to being in the warm clear sea around the islands, and days out scuba diving or swimming in Comino's Blue Lagoon. Where did you last go? Shanghai, Japan and Hong Kong. That was quite an experience, especially joining 3400 mainland Chinese people on a six day cruise from Shanghai to Japan. The poolside disco was a real eye opener, with around a couple hundred people dancing Gangnam style. Shanghai and Hong Kong are impressive and culturally very different. Japan was just wonderful. Do you know where you're going this year? I celebrate a milestone birthday next summer. I have rented a huge luxury villa in Malta and have a large number of siblings, cousins and their families flying in from around the world for a reunion. I haven't seen most of my cousins since I was a teenager when we used to spend all summer together in Malta. It should be once in a lifetime experience for all of us. Of all the places you've been to, which was your favourite and why? That's a difficult one. I love the Caribbean, but I think that my fondest memory was hiring a houseboat on the Murray River in Australia and spending a few days with family and friends paddling along, stopping at wineries along the way. It was in a remote area of Australian Outback. We would berth up in the middle of nowhere for the night. It was so dark that the stars were amazingly clear and bright, even after a few glasses of wine. Which destination do you wish to travel to, but haven't yet been? I haven't made it to South America yet. I dream of touring remote parts of Argentina, Uruguay and Chile and performing the Tango in a village square at sunset. I would also like to explore Patagonia. In your own country, what would you recommend tourists see that isn't in the travel guides? In Malta, the three cities of Birgu, Cospicua and Senglea are ancient, beautiful harbour towns that are often overlooked by tourists. In the UK, it has to be the Welsh Marches, to include Herefordshire and Shropshire as well as Worcestershire. Outstanding English country side, historic old market towns and wonderful pubs. How do you plan your holiday? It depends on how complicated it is. The last one was inspired and arranged by an excellent high street travel agent. Contrary to modern thinking, they are still extremely useful. I could not have arranged the whole itinerary without one. How often do you go away? We have a family holiday at least once each year. I still have sons at school and university who go away more often than I do. In May, I usually go to Lourdes in France for a week with a group of around 60 disabled or sick people. Who do you travel with? My main family holiday is always with my wife Jill, and two sons Sam and Ben. Next year, it is going to be a different thing altogether. Where do you see tourism in your country, in 10 years? Malta is a wonderful Mediterranean country with a vibrant, unique culture and an astonishing history. It's a tiny

place consisting of three inhabited islands, with a combined land mass which is smaller than the Isle of Wight. First time visitors are usually amazed at what they find – and then return year after year. In 10 years' time more visitors will be coming from Asia – Pacific and the Americas and promising to return again one day.

News: Malta Tourism Authority launches new gastro trail to agents News: Malta Tourism Authority launches new gastro trail to agents : Malta Tourism Authority has launched a new Gastro Trail of Malta and Gozo to highlight some of the best spots for agents to discover a culinary scene unlike anywhere in the world and share with their clients. A blend of Italian and Arabic cuisine, Malta is fast becoming one to watch for foodies and the new trail explores the restaurants, bars, farms and producers across both Malta and Gozo. Epicureans will also delight at the stunning wine offering from the small archipelago, with many producers gaining international recognition for both indigenous and blended vintages, the best of which are marked on the trail. The first in a series of themed trails, the map has been designed to be taken in bitesize chunks. Agents can use the Gastro Trail as their foodie bible to give to clients to use for their entire stay on the islands and visit each one, or simply stop off at the ones that take their fancy. Each foodie gem on the map is briefly described with details of what it has to offer - whether it be the best place to try the abundance of fresh seafood, sample traditional Maltese savoury pastries that are baked throughout the night, meet independent gourmet artisans or simply where to see local cheese being created and buy the freshest ingredients Malta has long been a favourite destination with British travellers and is now buzzing with excitement as next year the capital city, Valletta will become the 2018 European Capital of Culture. The map picks out three tantalising restaurants for atmospheric dining in the place to see and be seen next year including Michael's, a blend of traditional and cutting-edge cuisine in a wonderfully historic building; Panorama which has, as the name would suggest, a stunning panoramic vista of the Grand Harbour and The Harbour Club, famed for its seasonal and local menu as much as the waterside views.
