Yes, you may be studying a special degree and you want a related career but many organisations have a huge diversity of opportunities available. Business Champions: The ‘ULTIMATE’ business competition

‘G

raduates need more commercial awareness’ so says almost all graduate recruiters. We at Bright Futures know that for undergraduates to successfully compete for the top jobs you need to stand out, have something extra on your CV and in your experience which differentiates you from the rest. In response to this, two years ago we created a live business competition – ‘Business Champions’ – which gives students, working in small teams, the opportunity to come up with an idea that will make money. If we and our sector sponsors, PwC, like the idea too the team will get funding, a mentor from PwC and training from PwC & Bright Futures to help you bring your idea to life and make money. Now entering our third year what makes it so different from other competitions run on campus is that it is not an online ‘game’ where if you lose it does not matter. ‘Business Champions’ involves real money, creating & selling a real product or service and then making a real profit (or

sometimes a loss!). And backed up with very real and practical support from professionals to make it happen.

Successful ideas from students (from 1st years to Post Graduates) have included websites, events, importing businesses, electronic dog tags, The competition is national so the list is endless…Your idea it’s your chance to pick you wits does not have to be ground and commercial acumen against breaking and you don't need to students from across the UK. aspire to be the next Steve Jobs, Plus all the profits generated all we need is just one idea that during the competition go to you are excited by and believe charity. you can make it happen. What will I get from taking part? Winning prizes vary from employment opportunities; further funding for your idea, ongoing mentoring to take it to the next level and even an iPad2’s! But however you do in the competition, by being a ‘Business Champion’ you will develop real world commercial awareness and crucial skills that will give you something truly unique & extremely valuable on your CV.

The idea is yours, the funding, mentor & training is for you and your team. The difference it will make to your career prospects is huge. So register today and become a ‘Business Champion’. Go to our website, watch the video from last years competition and register your idea & team.

Does the ugly spectre of a barren graduate job market appeal? Thought not... This time of year is synonymous with two things. The daylight hours steadily disappearing before our eyes and a scary surprise lurking round the corner. And in the midst of your final year at university that might well be how you’re feeling about your current graduate job hunting. Campus is abuzz with employers and word on the street is that all the decent graduate jobs are gone by Xmas so you’ve got to get your act together now! Or the ugly spectre of a barren graduate job market awaits. The truth is somewhat different. Yes, we’re in the middle of the busiest period of graduate recruitment for many of the big recruiters and quite a few will have filled their 2012 graduate schemes by the New Year. So it’s important you’re looking at sources like Milkround.com [http:// www.milkround.com] and particularly Target Jobs [http://targetjobs.co.uk/] frequent updates on grad scheme closing dates to both find and plan your grad scheme application deadlines.

graduate job vacancies and that there are also many companies with year round grad scheme recruitment cycles? For instance, during my recruiting days at Logica our application form was open for 11 months of the year. Be sure to check the deadline date for each company. Don’t assume they’re all in 2011. So your graduate job hunting can and will often extend into the New Year and beyond and bring those 90 to 95% of other grad vacancies into play. Here’s some facts about them:  These other graduate vacancies are real jobs

with competitive starting salaries and real graduate level responsibility. But you won’t have heard of them because they are often with small to medium sized organisations without the financial budget to put together glossy brochures or tour the country putting themselves in front of you.  You won’t necessarily find these vacancies

The 7 Point CV - 20 seconds to impress Your CV is probably one of the most important selling documents the world has seen because it sells you and all your worth. But fitting it into two pages can be tough, both for those with not enough to say and those with too much. It is important that you get all the right information across as clearly and as easily as possible. The types of people that will be looking at your CV will have read hundreds if not thousands before you and yours is unlikely to be the last. You probably have all of a miniscule 20 seconds to impress, so, your main aim is to make it as quick and as easy as possible for that person to say yes, yes, Yes!

1. Formatting is important. Highlight the key headers to segregate each section and ensure your 2. 3. 4.

text is broken into easily read digestible chunks. Your personal details should be at the top, they should be correct, and they should be professional. If you have an email like ilovefhm99@ or kinkyboots33@ it is likely your application may be slightly tainted. Career objectives are much more useful to a recruiter than a personal statement. Outline in no more than 50 words. Education first. As a graduate, this is key. Put your degree first, your institution and your grade (or expected). If you put nothing, they will expect the worst. Whatever you do, don’t list all the modules– it’s a waste of space unless specifically relevant to the role you are applying for. Summarise your GCSE’s – i.e. 10 GCSE’s grade A-C incl. Maths [A], English [C] & Science [B]. In your work experience ensure it is relevant to the role you are applying for and don’t ramble through your job description – summarise how you made an impact and went above and beyond your role. Additional experience is very welcome. Employers want to see you have a rounded lifestyle, can balance work and play and have outside interests. Place here anything that you have made an impact with such as a leading role on a society committee, high grade music, sporting achievements, awards and recognition. Don’t list references. Again, a waste of space and they will request these at a later date.

Once you have your CV, take it to your Careers Service to get them to take a look at it. Ask your friends or family to scan over it too. If they can get a great impression of you in under 20 seconds you are likely to have produced a successful CV! But everyone will have their own opinions so collate the comments and make it your own. Creating a CV log will help you remember all the things you have done throughout your career so when it comes to tailoring it for that dream job, or filling out that dreaded application form, you can view your CV log and pick out all the relevant activities you have done. Keep on top of it and review it regularly to avoid last minute stresses to meet the application deadlines.
