WELCOME
from the team Welcome to the February issue of the MyKindaFuture E-magazine! This month we are looking at career opportunities in the Retail and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector with many companies providing an insight into their career opportunities. On pages 6 and 7 we meet Stephen, a graduate from the University of Leicester who joined the Retail Banking scheme at Lloyds Banking Group who shares his experiences of the scheme and what attracted him to working in retail. Like many students working in retail and FMCG, he did not study a retail focused degree such as business and this highlights the wide range of opportunities available to students from any discipline.
me to describe my skills and experience especially in job interviews and applications.
Like me, you might have had previous experience of working in retail part time to fund your studies. At the time, these jobs gave me some pocket money but now as a graduate, I use these experiences to help
For example, when I was working in a local supermarket I was a normal customer assistant. When I talk about this experience I focus on how I got involved in the new self-scan tills by creating a competition
Whatever sector you are interested in, don’t discount the experience you have gained from part time jobs and use them to help set you apart from other candidates. It is very easy to list your responsibilities you had such as replenishing stock, serving customers, keeping the store tidy etc. But when you think back on your time in that role, consider what you achieved, any successes and if you did anything to improve your work? Think about any times you came up with a better and quicker way of completing a task or helped make the workplace better!
for all staff to be the best at using the tills, especially those who were dubious of the new system. It made it fun and meant that more staff were available to help frustrated customers. Although this was a small task, it demonstrated how I can work in different teams, develop interpersonal relationships and have the initiative to approach the store manager with this idea and given money to buy prizes. Next time you are writing your CV or using examples in an interview, try to turn your experiences round into achievements!

THE PERFECT START IN
RETAIL MANAGEMENT
Perfection is the standard at M&S. Not just in the products we offer our customers, but in the way we prepare talented graduates for a career in the frontline of retail management. There’s more responsibility, more opportunities than you ever thought possible. Imagine managing an M&S store. Controlling millions of pounds worth of budget. Looking after hundreds and thousands of items and a multi-channel retail strategy. Leading and motivating a large team. And building on our reputation for innovation to create an inspiring customer experience. This is what our Commercial Managers do. It’s as challenging as it sounds – and as rewarding. So show us you have ambition and ability and we’ll give you all the training you need to be a success. Maeve McKeever is one of our graduates and believes our retail management programme is unique because it offers graduates the opportunity to branch out and experience retail in both food and fashion. “I didn’t realise that there was so much within one company and that it was
so diverse. That’s what’s so good about M&S; you can progress within the company and you can go in totally different directions.” Responsibility will come early but you’ll have seasoned managers and passionate colleagues around you to help you take everything in your stride. To prepare for your Commercial Manager role, you’ll be hands-on in different store areas including Food, Clothes, Home and Store Operations. On completion of your training, you’ll have the skills to inspire a team of Section Managers, run an area of the sales floor and open up numerous career options.
“You’ve literally got the backing of a huge company and the opportunity to learn a lot very quickly. In retail management you can learn a skill-set in one area, then move on to another function within the store, where you learn other skills and develop different leadership qualities.”
Applications don’t open until later in the year. In the meantime, you can contact us on WhatsApp: 07834 335603 with your career questions.
At 23, Tom Footitt is a Store Manager who first joined us on a 12-month business placement, which is a great way for sandwich-year students to gain leadership experience.

What did you study? BA History and Politics at University of Leicester Why did you choose Lloyds Banking Group? I realised whilst at University that I wanted a career where I could lead projects and think strategically, but also within an environment where I could develop and grow. So I decided to try an internship in the banking industry in my second year at University, which is why I applied to the Lloyds Banking Group Retail Banking Internship programme. I didn’t know at the time whether this was the career for me or in fact the industry for me, but the internship helped me make that decision. I was given real responsibility from the outset in leading my own projects and delivering work. It was tough, yet rewarding and I realised that this was where I wanted to start my career. Subsequently, I went on to join the graduate scheme. How is the Retail Banking graduate programme structured? This scheme consists of three placements across the business, of which the final placement is a leadership role, which I am doing now.
What have you done on the programme? One of the best aspects of the Retail graduate scheme with Lloyds is the variety and breadth of work you get involved in. I started the scheme on a six month placement as a Regional Support Manager for the branch network, where I was responsible for driving service improvements across the region’s 243 branches. 6 months later and I had started my second role as a Communications Strategy Manager in Group Brands and Marketing, where I led competitor analysis; using this insight to inform the banks marketing strategies going forward. Finally, I am now working in the Bank’s Digital Division, where I work to drive the pilot of a brand new online banking platform for Commercial clients. What training have you received?
bank, I know that the scheme has delivered exactly what it sets out to achieve, which is to give graduates the skills and training they need to develop at pace. You get an amazing amount of support and what surprised me personally was the focus the organisation puts on having a good work life balance and agile working solutions available. Any last thoughts to share? Ultimately, through the graduate scheme and focused development, the bank has helped me to understand my strengths and weaknesses, along with what interests me. I firmly believe that we discover what we enjoy and what we are good at through actually doing it. At Lloyds Banking Group, I have been able to shape my own career around my interests and strengths and to me that is invaluable.
Lloyds Banking Group invests heavily in developing its graduates, which is why we don’t just get on the job training and development. Across the two years I also study to become a qualified Chartered Banker, which is 100% funded by the bank.
Applications for Retail Banking summer internships and graduate programmes are currently open. Places are limited and we encourage you to apply promptly to avoid disappointment.

Applying for a career in Retail
Hey! My name is Amy Cowan and I am currently studying Marketing BSc (Hons) at Lancaster University. I am also the Treasurer of the Bright Futures Society at Lancaster. I have recently applied for internship roles within the FMCG and food retail sectors, as they are highly dynamic and innovative industries to work in. Through this article I am going to talk about my own experiencing of applying to roles within the FMCG and retail industry. I began applying for summer internships within the FMCG and food retail sectors as soon as relevant positions opened – some as early as last summer! I had a number of rejections at various stages of the application process, including the dreaded online psychometric tests and the most daunting stage - the interview. The reason for my rejections was because I was not a close enough match to the company culture. I remained positive thought and I was determined to find a company that I was better aligned to which would be of benefit to both the organisation and myself!
8
In October last year, I applied for the Field Sales Summer Internship at Kellogg’s, which had an extremely long recruitment process which involved submitting a CV, a covering letter and answering two questions before completing three online tests. After submitting my application, this went to the back of my mind until December when I received an email inviting me for a telephone interview. I thoroughly enjoyed the telephone interview as the interviewer was easy to talk to and it was a very much a two-way conversation. I was then invited to an Assessment Centre at their Head Office in Manchester. Again, I really enjoyed the experience; the assessors were all extremely friendly and I loved being able
to learn more about how the company operates and its futures plans. A week later - and just a few days before Christmas - I was over the moon to receive a phone call offering me the internship position at Kellogg’s - it was definitely an early Christmas present! I’m really excited to start the internship in June and I think it will be a brilliant, invaluable experience. Working in the FMCG and food retail sectors you are working with commodities and products that assist people, and therefore improve, the lives of society as a whole, which is highly motivating and rewarding. My three top tips, based on my own experience, for anyone applying to any role – not just in the FMCG and retail sectors – would be: 1. Tailor every application to each specific company to demonstrate that you possess the key attributes they are looking for 2. Know each company inside out: know their brands, objectives, competitors, threats, opportunities etc. 3. Make the most of employer events at your University and network to form contacts and gain valuable insights

The Next Wave of Disruptors:
Five Game Changing Technologies for Retailers By Jonathan Gregory Technology disruptions often start small, but they can eventually gain enough power to crush the incumbents that lie in their path. With such a rapidly evolving digital landscape, it’s not enough for retailers to be looking at how technology innovation is disrupting their businesses today. They also need to be gazing into the future to understand—and begin planning for—the next wave of game-changing technology. Here are five categories of emerging technologies that have already begun to demonstrate their disruptive powers across industry. 1. Internet of Things (IoT) Intelligent devices—from shipping containers to shopping carts—are already a part of our daily lives and expected to continue to grow at an accelerated pace.
2. Wearables Wearable devices that complement a person’s actions allow companies to equip their employees with the technology they need to do better work, potentially improving operational efficiency. In retail, wearable devices such as Google Glass™ could help store employees look up product information in real-time while interacting with customers. 3. Cognitive Computing and Machine Learning Retailers need to understand the implications of increasingly intelligent software that will change the fundamental nature of application development and open up new windows of opportunity. Intelligent software plays a starring role in retailers’ ability to harness big data, particularly unstructured forms such as video, images, symbols and natural language.

4. Digital Fabrication The adoption of 3D printing is accelerating and poised for massive growth. Many retailers and manufacturers are already exploring ways to leverage 3D printing and other types of digital fabrication to defer production to the latest point possible in the supply chain to meet individualised demand. 5. Digital Payments Digital payment solutions hold the potential to improve retail operations by reducing checkout times and providing other efficiencies. Digital payments could also drive incremental sales.

Your passport to a dream career in travel As a business that sells “smiles” we believe that our graduates should get an opportunity to help our customers discover their smile as we take them to their happy place and truly deliver exceptional customer service by going the extra smile. Going “back to the floor” in one of our 628 retail shops as part of their graduate development programme is a fantastic opportunity for our graduates to get hands on experience interacting with our customers and gaining a deeper understanding of what’s involved for colleagues in customer facing roles. Writing for our graduate blog, one of our Finance Graduates, Jack Kerrigan, shares his recent experience of working in our Coventry shop:
I get drawn into the financial reporting of performance hotels, but you overlook the customer facing side of things, therefore it was really exciting for me to get more of a rounded holistic view.
What happens when you let a Finance Graduate loose in retail To quote one of the world’s great poets from the nineties and noughties, my palms were sweaty, knees weak, arms were heavy – all this because a Finance graduate was being stripped of his beloved Microsoft Excel for four days and going to Thomson retail store. From Head Office we all know we sell holidays, that much is obvious, but it is easy to forget you are selling an experience and the whole holiday experience begins when our customers visit our website or one of our retail stores. As my job goes,
With what must read to be quite the euphoric moment, needless to say that with a bit of shadowing of the Thomson Travel Advisors; I was actually able to start ‘going the extra smile’ rather than being the awkwardly placed hindrance. No day goes quicker than one spent talking to people about their ideal holidays and seeing how you can personalise it to make it even better. I saw how the advisors were able to put the customer in ‘their happy place’ by talking to honeymoon couples about their romantic Dominican Republic getaways and organising champagne receptions; chatting to families looking to spend the 2016 festive season with the Jamaican sun beaming down and even contacting cruise ships to find out if guide dogs were allowed to travel with their associated persons. What was eye-opening was how our Thomson travel advisors will ‘go the extra smile’ to ensure that our customers walk away with the perfect holiday. By way of example, they were able to organise for an air hostess to come and talk to first time flyers when they boarded the plane because they were nervous about the experience;
We are still recruiting for our Finance, Analytics and IT graduate programmes. To find out more and apply visit: www.tuijobsuk.co.uk or see our graduate blog at: tuiukgrads.wordpress.com

demonstrating how our company can ‘go the extra smile’ for our customers surprising and delighting them with our effortless customer service. What I am taking away from the experience, other than a newfound desire to stay at the Sensimar Seaside Suites & Spa resort in Mexico, is twofold. Firstly it is a strong appreciation for the lengths the company and its employees go to in order to ensure that we deliver more than just a holiday and the way Thomson customers celebrate booking their holiday to Florida! Secondly, it is an ever-growing like for the welcoming and social atmosphere that runs from head to toe of the organisation. Taking part in the ‘back to the floor’ teaches you that behind the numbers on my finance spread sheet’s is a family taking their youngest on their first holiday abroad or a newlywed couple honeymooning on a cruise. I honestly believe that this experience will enable me to have a more rounded view when making decisions and in turn do my job better. To finish, and for those who may be wondering, yes – to my surprise – I did actually manage to sell a holiday (although I think Sensatori Jamaica pretty much sells itself).

Three essential questions to ask yourself when looking for a graduate job Looking for a new job can be daunting, the recruitment marketplace is fast-paced with new positions emerging every day and getting to grips with the art of job hunting can be a real challenge! Bianca from the MyKindaFuture graduate recruitment team is here to help you get started with your search and provide you with helpful steps to finding success. Jobs are now more fluid than ever and young professionals are enjoying quicker progression and bespoke working conditions including freelancing, working from home, self-employment and many more. Along with this, the type of roles available are becoming more diverse resulting in over 50% of graduates taking jobs not directly related to their degree and over 95% changing their career direction by the age of 24! (The Independent, 2014) With all of these options available to you, we have given you three thinking points to help clarify what direction to go in after University:
Which sector do I want to go into? You might track the roots of the answer back to your degree – think of the areas of the course that you really enjoyed and picture yourself into a career that could encompass the same skills, whilst applying them to a work environment. Think about what you have enjoyed doing outside of your degree too, through societies or groups! By going along to employer events
16
such as Bright Futures society sessions, you can find out more about what skills their roles require and better understand the opportunities in the sector even if you have not studied in that field. For example, the law firm Clifford Chance open their vacation scheme to all students, not just those studying law! (More info on pages 12 – 13) Have a look at the sector-specific job advertisements on websites such as Graduate-jobs, Monster, Reed, Total Jobs, Indeed or CV-Library. You can also check out different editions of this e-magazine which cover sectors such as Finance, Law and STEM.
What type of company do I see myself working for? Most graduates focus on what the company does instead of looking at the type of organisation and how this suits them. This widens the amount of options available to you however, the graduates who are most successful in the application process tend to be those who have targeted the company on both what they do, the type of organisation and the company culture. So think carefully about the type of company that you would see yourself being with: 1. Start-up – Small teams with up to 50 employees, close work relationships, extensive responsibility, exciting new venture and constantly changing. 2. Small-medium size enterprise (SME) – medium size team of 50 – 500 employees, exposure to various areas of the business, internal progression and a dynamic work environment. 3. Large enterprise/ Corporation – 1000 employees upwards, clear departmental
?
split, responsibility within one’s own vertical market, sector specific experience and settled hierarchical internal structure.
Which role would I like to fill in a company? This is probably the most important question that every job seeker needs to ask themselves before they start the job search. It is essential to be very honest with yourself about what your strengths are and in which capacity you’d best put them to work to your advantage and satisfaction. I would suggest that you start the process backwards, thinking about the role that you would like to occupy in 2-3 years (e.g. Account Manager in a PR firm or Senior Consultant in a Management Consultancy) and apply for the position that would realistically allow you to get there. Most graduate roles start at an Executive, Junior or Assistant level and offer the route to promotion, by shadowing and learning from the most experienced professionals first. If you aren’t sure what type of roles there are out there, use Linkedin. It is a great medium to gain awareness on what the internal structure of a company looks like, what type of people work there and what path the most successful professionals took in order to get where they are today. You can identify a role model and look at their career history, in order to get inspiration. If you are very determined to work for that same company, why not message them directly and ask them if they can give you some career tips? You’d be surprised to see how many people would be willing to share their success stories and mentor you.
The order in which you ask yourself and answer these questions is not that important and it probably varies from person to person, but it is important to understand that all of these questions need to be addressed when looking for your first graduate role!

Chanel’s Story
Chanel says she’s found the support on offer to be excellent.
she does, doesn’t always match up with the reality.
“When I first started I was given lots of responsibility, but I was always supported by managers, my mentor and my team. The best advice I was given was ‘rule number one; ask questions.’ I’ve never felt lost in my role. I’ve used other graduates as a sounding board and because I’ve worked closely with them, I’ve built some great relationships.”
“Whenever I tell people I’m an accountant, the ruder ones audibly groan,” she explains. “The more polite ones try and make conversation, expecting boring tales of corrupted Excel files and broken calculators. Once I tell them about my experiences at KPMG, like how I’ve been bonding with paint-splattered partners at our department’s Corporate Responsibility event painting classrooms at a school for autistic children, suddenly, being an accountant doesn’t seem all too bad. Especially an accountant at KPMG.”
Even though Chanel was confident that KPMG was the ideal place for her, she was still a little apprehensive on her first day.
“I’ve successfully navigated my way through nine exams – soon to be 12, hopefully! I’ve had opportunities that have challenged me and I’ve been consistently encouraged to achieve new things, and to take on more responsibility.”
“I felt a bit out of my depth – as though I was a soon-to-be-discovered fraud amongst the other 10 or so new starters. But I quickly realised that it was just nerves because everyone was having first day jitters. We were all quickly put at ease during the induction.”
It’s thanks to the support she’s had from her peers and her more experienced colleagues that Chanel’s confidence has grown and grown.
On a day-to-day level, Chanel assesses whether the financial statements of different companies are a true and fair reflection of their transactions and works with her clients to build strong relationships. She loves the variety of her role, but has found that other people’s perception of what
COMPANY PROFILE
“When I was at university, KPMG was always my favourite of the Big Four firms,” she says. “I was confident that I’d thrive in the environment and felt well informed, as I’d spoken to lots of KPMG employees at different networking events. I liked the idea that I’d be able to add value to all sorts of different organisations, and especially the fact that I’d be working on real projects for real clients right from the start. I definitely made the right choice – I had high expectations and they’ve actually been exceeded. I’m making a difference to tech telecoms and media companies – whether they’re small firms or huge multinationals.”
KPMG
Even before Chanel had finished studying Economics with Central and East European Studies at Birmingham University, she felt sure that she wanted to embark on a career at KPMG...
Chanel’s found that the social side to life at KPMG is just as important as the thought-leading work she’s involved in. “In February, I was part of a team working in Dallas, Texas, for two weeks. As well as carrying out Audit work for our clients, we ate lots of delicious steak, watched the Super Bowl in a Texan bar, and went to a rodeo! We quickly became a close-knit team. We received a lot of support from KPMG managers in the UK too – it was an amazing experience.”

Santander
Thinking about what comes after University life? Take the next step with Santander Early in Careers!
COMPANY PROFILE
It’s the time of year when most students start thinking about their next steps, whether that be another year of study, coming face to face with the world of work or embarking on an Intern/Graduate scheme. In the Early in Career team, we’re planning for a successful campaign to bring on board individuals to join our Santander family and build a successful long-term career with us. Currently we have both Graduate and Intern opportunities ranging across a number of business areas for those individuals who want to continue developing the skills they have learned during their studies and also be challenged through contributing to projects, such as around building new digital platforms, and creating new relationships. Our Internship opportunities provide a really great snap shot into what it is like to work for Santander and dependent upon performance, also offers the chance to be given a place on the Graduate programme without having to go through the assessment process again. Not only does this relieve any pressure to complete interviews in the final year of your university life, it allows you to focus all of your efforts on obtaining the best results in your degree.
Our Internships last for 10 weeks over the summer and the feedback we have had from the latest Interns is that they were surprised as to how much they were able to learn about Santander in the time that they had in the business, how much responsibility they were given on projects and how many people they were able to meet and network with. The Internship has opened up many doors for the students helping them to understand what the world of work is all about but also giving them a flavour of what else was to come if they moved onto the Graduate programme and we’ve seen the highest numbers of Interns move onto our Graduate programmes this year, for this very reason. Should you choose to stay onto a Graduate programme with us, you will have a number of developmental opportunities as well as advice and guidance throughout the programmes from knowledgeable colleagues who know what you’re going through. You will have the chance to take part in our CSR project, supporting our charity of the year, which is a great opportunity to build a network of fellow graduates that will influence the rest of your career. By the time you’ve finished your programme, you’ll have earned an
industry-recognised qualification in your area – such as a CIOBS, Professional Banker Diploma, ACCA or CIMA. We have a number of opportunities available in different business areas as below:
• Graduate Geoban Programme • Intern UK Banking • Intern Technology & Operations Now that Assessment Centre season is here, we are excited to meet the future Interns and Graduates and soon to be new members of the Santander family. As we base our decisions on how long the opportunities stay on the website on the number of applications we receive, we have already closed a number of Programmes – so don’t leave it too late to visit the website and make your application!
