editors letter What a jam packed month we have had here at Bright Futures! Some fantastic events and achievements on campus, our Employability Conference, Presidents Conference and two brand spanking new Societies at Westminster and Sheffield Hallam. We are really pleased that you are sharing more and more of your successes with us about your events on campus. The careful planning, marketing, targeting of relevant students and attention to detail is generating some fantastic feedback from our Corporate Investors with a real emphasis on quality over quantity. In particular for Bristol Bright Futures, who organised and really successful engineering specific event for GE, well done! Positive words such as “Proactive”, “Engaged”, “Quality”, “Enthusiastic” are being used to describe the experiences of working with our Societies so please keep up the great work and keep on sharing your achievements. Another successful Employability Conference was held on the 19th November at Aston Villa Football Stadium bringing together 175 delegates from over 30 academic institutions. Some fantastic and inspirational speakers who demonstrated a real affinity with what is important and relevant to Students, in keeping with our theme, The Student Voice! It was great to see a mix of University and School committee members at the conference. Once again we were all blown away at how articulate, confident and driven you all are.
Not happy with running just one conference in November we were soon on to our next Conference less than a week later! The Presidents Conference was kindly hosted by RPC this year and brought together the leaders of our Societies. The focus of the day was to show are continued support for all that you do and offer guidance and training on how you can carry on being great leaders whilst developing your own personal skills. This month there is lots of information on what has been happening since our November emag went out. Plus tips for getting you through assessment centres, how to make your Christmas budget stretch with some great Christmas gift ideas and an insightful article from our Guest Writer Vanessa Doust who has worked within graduate recruitment for KPMG for over 8 years. Happy Reading and a Very Happy Christmas to all of our readers!!

Homemade Christmas Presents So it’s the festive time of year again. Time to dig out the tinsel, the fairy lights and of course the mistletoe! Christmas is a joyous time of year full of good cheer, good food, and presents! However this can have a nasty effect on the bank account. To help make Christmas that little bit more affordable you may want to consider making homemade Christmas gifts for your friends and family. Here at Bright Futures we have decided to choose our top five ideas we have seen. 4
1) Cranberry & Orange Vodka This vodka has a vibrant ruby colour which looks very Christmassy indeed. Its best you plan this one as it take two weeks before it can be bottled and 3-4 weeks before it can be drunk! Ingredients: • 250g fresh or frozen cranberries • Pared zest of 2 oranges • 175-200g caster sugar, to taste • 1 litre unbranded vodka Method: 1. Put the cranberries into a shallow dish and stab them with a fork, but don’t reduce to a mush. Put them into 2 sterilised, wide-necked jars with lids, with the strips of orange zest and the sugar. Pour over the vodka, seal and leave somewhere dark for 2 weeks, shaking the jar now and then (about once a week), until the sugar has dissolved. 2. Strain the liquid through a muslin- lined sieve into a jug, decant into sterilised bottles, seal and label. Presentation: Decorate the bottles with a ribbon, some wrapping ties or a Christmas decoration. This would make a great present with some nice shot glasses.
2) Snowball Truffles
3. Tie a label to the wine bottle with the following instructions: ‘Tip the contents of the muslin bag into a pan with the wine, orange, cinnamon stick and 300ml/½pt water. Simmer for 5 minutes, and then serve.’ Presentation Place all of the ingredients in a nice box (ideally with a lid) filled with some straw. Create a nice label and stick that on the top of the lid, and bingo!
4) Chilli Infused Oil Christmas is a ‘Chilli’ time of year, so why not ‘spice’ it up a bit with this chilli infused oil. Ingredients: • 450ml/17fl oz olive oil (not virgin) • 20g/¾oz dried red chilli flakes • 3-4 whole dried red chillies Method: 1. Gently warm the olive oil in a saucepan. Add the chilli flakes and whole chillies to the oil and heat for 3-4 minutes. Remove from the heat and leave the oil to cool slightly. 2. When the oil has cooled slightly, carefully pour it into sterilised, sealable glass bottle using a funnel. (Caution: hot oil can be dangerous.) Add the chilli flakes and dried chillies from the pan. Seal the bottle. 3. Keep the bottle in a cool, dark place, shaking the bottles once a week. As time goes on the oil will become redder and hotter.
These little balls of delight are perfect for a personal Christmas treat and if there are any left they also make a great present too!
Presentation Decorate the bottles with a nice bright red ribbon and make a nice label to stick on the side. For those who are not chilli fans, you can always make a herb infused oil instead!
Ingredients: • 200ml double cream • 200g good-quality dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa solids) •200g desiccated coconut
5) Festive tube of snowman cookies.
Method: 1. Pour the cream into a saucepan and bring just up to the boil. Chop the chocolate into small pieces and place in a large bowl. Pour over the boiling cream, then stir until the chocolate and cream are well blended and smooth. Cool, then set aside in the fridge until the mixture is solid, about 2 hrs. 2. Scoop out teaspoons of the mixture and roll into small walnut-size balls with your hands. Sprinkle the coconut onto a plate and roll the truffle in the coconut until evenly covered. Will keep in a cool place for 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month. Presentation Put the truffles in a clear cellophane bag and tie the bag shut with a Christmas ribbon. If you really want to push the boat out why not make your own label too!
Ingredients: • 200g/7oz self-raising flour • 100g/3½oz caster sugar • 100g/3½oz butter, plus extra for greasing • 1 large free-range egg, lightly beaten • 1 tsp vanilla extract For the decorations: • White and blue fondant icing • White and black writing icing • Sprinkles • 48 small chocolate balls
3) Mulled Wine Kit This is a lovely gift for any wine lovers in your life. It is pretty easy to make too! Ingredients: • 25cm square butter muslin (available from department & hardware stores) • 85g Demerara sugar • 1 tsp ground ginger • ½ tsp ground nutmeg • 1 cinnamon stick • 70cl bottle red wine • 8 - 12 cloves • 1 orange Method: 1. Put the muslin on a flat surface and tip the sugar, ginger and nutmeg into the centre. Tie into a pouch with fine string and attach to the neck of the wine bottle. Then attach the cinnamon stick to the bottle with a little raffia. 2. Stick the cloves into the orange and pack into a box lined with raffia or shredded paper, with the wine.
These snowman cookies look good enough to eat! Using an old Pringle tube is also a great way to present these.
Method: 1. Pre heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. 2. Mix the flour and sugar together in a bowl, then rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. 3. Add the egg and vanilla essence and mix to form a soft dough. 4. Roll out onto a well-floured work surface and cut into rounds. Place on greased baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. 5. Cool on a wire rack. When completely cool decorate. 6. Roll out the white fondant icing and cut out circles the same size as the biscuits, brush the backs of the circles with a little cooled boiled water and stick them to the biscuits, smoothing down the icing as you stick it on. 7. Roll out the blue icing and cut out more circles, then cut these in half and using a little more water and stick on top of the white icing for the hats. 8. Brush the hats with water in places where you want the sprinkles to stick and then sprinkle! 9. Pipe decorations on the hat with the white writing icing, then pipe a small blob for the hat bobble and another for the nose – stick on the chocolate balls. Pipe black eyes and mouth then leave to set. Presentation Grab an old Pringle’s tube, clean it out and wrap it in festive wrapping paper and top it with a bow.

BRIGHT FUTURES EMPLOYABILITY CONFERENCE 19th November, Aston Villa Football Stadium in Birmingham, 175 delegates from over 30 academic institutions, 5 great speakers, the opportunity to have lots of meaningful and quality conversations with Employers, Universities, Schools and Students,; add to that great networking and you have one fantastic day. So what were the key messages from the speakers and what did students do when we gave them a voice to reflect on and share the views on what you feel is needed to help students become more employable? • Explore your options, find out what other opportunities are out there over and above what you know about already about. You will be surprised about how many companies have roles that are right for you, but you just didn’t know about. Take every, and any opportunity, to meet and talk to employers face to face – ask questions, be inquisitive. But do a bit of research first – employers hate being asked ‘what do you do?’ as they hear it all the time, they love to hear ‘I know you offer [a certain opportunity], tell me more about what type of individual is a good fit for this role’ • To increase your chances of being successful when you apply to jobs, understand yourself first before you start applying to jobs. Learn what you are good at, where your strengths lie and what you enjoy doing; ‘what are you doing when you are at your most passionate and inspired?’ Then seek out roles and organisations where you can be using those strengths • Leadership starts with leading yourself – a positive ‘strong, confident, firm’ attitude and approach in yourself makes your stronger and more resilient • You are not a brand that can, or should, be seen as a commodity but rather an individual with a personal identity who has strengths and abilities that, when channelled in the right way, can and will make a real impact for both you & your career, and also for the organisation you work with (not to mention your wider life). • Use your ‘failures’ to succeed. They can, if you decide to learn from them and not just discard the experience, help you understand yourself better and where your strengths lie • Shape what you do in terms of not just the extra curricula activities you are involved in but also the roles & responsibilities you take on (be that while at School or University). You want to be playing to and developing your strengths as much, and as often as, possible • The graduate market has changed, employers are still not filling all their roles. Employers want to hire individuals with a greater self-awareness of themselves. To stand out show how you as an individual have that awareness by demonstrating / evidencing the strengths and passion which fit the needs of that role and organisation. So in essence is it time to turn job hunting on it heads, as opposed to applying to companies because you know them & they are big; start with understanding ‘you’ first, lead yourself in finding your strengths, capabilities and most of all what you are passionate about. Then explore and seek out employers and roles (and yes it could still be with the big firms, but it may not!) where YOU, and your strengths, are best suited to that role. Do this and you won’t just improve your success when job hunting as you will be that ‘great fit’, but also and hugely importantly you will succeed with the organisation so much faster because you are doing what you are great at and are passionate about – what can be a better way to go to work that that?! PS Look out for the full post conference report later in December which you ca download from our website www.brightfutures.co.uk 7

Top Tips to help you succeed in an Assessment Centre For many of you this time of year is mainly made up of Internship, Placement and Graduate job hunting. Some of you by now may well have been or will be invited to an assessment centre. Firstly congratulations! But how do you make sure you exceed when attending an assessment centre. Well the team here at Bright Futures have created a list you may wish to read, it might just give you that upper hand.
14
Show the Assessors you are doing it Those of you who have taken a driving test will understand that while taking the exam you didn’t just look in your mirror before making a manoeuvre, you moved your whole head to show the examiner that you were look. This is the same in assessment centres. Do not just sit there and listen to your group, show your assessors you are listening by giving feedback or good body language.
Be yourself and remember to relax When participating in an assessment centre it is easy to be stressed and keep your guard up. However remember there are people observing you in order to assess you, do you want to be giving off this impression, probably not. If you are relaxed and be yourself, you will find your personality will come through this will help to add individuality and the assessors are more likely to warm to you.
Practice, Practice and more Practice The old saying “Practice makes perfect” couldn’t be truer when it comes to assessment centres. If you are able to get a group of friends together who too want to practice assessments centres then this will give you the opportunity to experience what one may be like and make sure you are well prepared. This practice will also help to keep you stress levels low as you are ready for what is coming your way.
Know what you are being assessed on. In the majority of cases the assessor will be assessing you against a set of predefined qualities and competencies. In most cases this information is available on the organisations website, or they may email you prior the assessment centre to inform you. If both of these do not occur, then it may be worth if you feel appropriate contacting the organisation directly and asking.
Prioritise your time Many assessment centres run exercises that are timed. A lot of students fail at these by not prioritising the time effectively and hence not doing themselves justice. In a lot of assessment centre exercises you will be given a brief and it is down to you to respond in some way within a set time. It is important you gain all information needed a quickly as possible so that more time can be spent on you demonstrating your skills and attributes. One way to do this is skim read the brief. Once you have done this you will have a feel of the overall challenge and what is expected of you allowing to spend the majority of time demonstrating your ability.

VIDEO
INTERvIEWS How to do well More employers are taking to video interviews. Why is this? Well it allows recruiters and organisations to implement a new way to filter candidates. Video interviews can be very intimidating, sometimes more intimating than a face to face interview. So, have a look at our tips to help you get over those nerves.
18
First Impressions Count Just like any interview, first impressions count. So the first main tip is that your Skype name is professional. If your Skype ID is ‘Hotchick1’ or ‘Carlad1’ you may want to consider changing this. Next dress just like you would to a face to face interview. It is very unlikely you would turn up to an interview in a hoody and scruffy hair; therefore do not do this for a video interview either.
Practice, Practice, Practice Again, we always say it here at Bright Futures, practice makes perfect. Turn your camera on and record yourself and what you say. It may sound odd, but it is a skill to be comfortable in front of camera, so by recording yourself you are able to see how you come across. Even the big Hollywood stars have to practice this!
Get the technology right Most laptops have recording facilities, but do not take this for granted, Make sure your PC or laptop has a web cam and that it also works. Doing this ahead of the interview will give you time to run to the shops and buy one if needed. Next make sure your microphone is working, the last thing you want is to give you interviewer a silent film, they want to hear what you have to say! Lastly make sure your broadband connection is a high quality. There is nothing worse than losing connection and having to start the interview again, it ruins the flow.
Other things to think about Body langue and use of hands is very important in coming across well. If you are someone who slouches in their chair, then make sure you’re sat up straight looking at the camera. If you are someone who uses their hands a lot when communicating then make sure your hands are visible in the shot. It is a little odd for the interview to see your upper arms moving but nothing else. Another thing to be aware of is the lag that can occur with video calls. Wait a few seconds after the interviewer has stopped speak before you speak, this then allows for any lags and means you will not talk over them. Lastly make sure you are in a quiet room. You want the interviewer to be able to hear every word you say so make sure you have no noise distractions. And if you’re conducting a video interview in a shared house or public place then make a sign for your door saying NO ENTRY.

guest writer Vanessa Doust
At KPMG we hire around 900 graduates every year into our programmes for Tax, Advisory, Audit and Technology. Our vision is to be the CLEAR Choice for our clients and to do so we need to attract and retain the very best people. Our graduate programmes are vast and varied and we have something to suit all interests, skill sets and locations. Whether you are an international student, or need to stay close to home for personal reasons, a musician or mathematician, we are sure you will find something to suit you. We are really keen to hear all about you and what you can offer, because that is what truly makes KPMG a diverse and interesting place to work, as well as being a top choice for our clients - we are a professional services firm with people at the heart of our organisation. Therefore when applying to one of our graduate programmes, or internships, it is important that you really bring yourself and your personal career motivation to the recruitment process. Once you have made it through the first stage of the process the online tests – you will be invited to a first round interview and this is the place where you can really start to differentiate yourself.
20
As someone who has spent many hours on campus at recruitment events, one of the most commonly asked questions by students is ‘how do I stand out?’ Good question, and when you think about the thousands of applications we have to our programmes each year, it’s a very intuitive one. My best piece of advice here is to be yourself, perhaps a little cheesy and clichéd, but being yourself allows the interviewer to fully appreciate your personality and qualities you could bring to the firm - it would be a very boring place to work if we were all the same. Another way to ensure you’re well prepared is considering how you build and leverage your own personal brand into your career motivation. By this I mean what is it about KPMG that attracts you; why have you chosen the particular graduate programme to apply to and why that particular office? For example, be clear on why you are motivated to apply to a location and role; is it an office in a large city because you want the larger and perhaps, in some cases, more complex clients, or is it a smaller office because of the opportunities to get closer to some of the key accounts and take responsibility that bit earlier? Is it Tax because you have an affinity for numbers, or Consulting because you like helping people solve problems?
Similarly, try to think about how you have approached certain situations that have happened to you over time. The way that you deal with things, and articulate this in your answers to interview questions and at assessment centres, can really demonstrate your personality. A lot of organisations, KPMG included, recruit using a competency-based framework. This means that we need to see how your past experiences and skills will transfer into the workplace. It is often a good idea to apply the STAR method to some of your answers to certain competency questions. So in a scenario based question, describe the situation you are using to answer the question posed to you, what was the task that needed to be undertaken, what actions did you take to get there and what was the result. By applying this methodology to some of the questions in a recruitment process will prompt you to talk about yourself, and the way you deal with situations and problems, which are a real indicator of how you work, what kind of person you are, and how well suited you would be to the organisation you are applying to. It really is an exciting time at KPMG. We have a clear vision which is to be the CLEAR CHOICE and an important part of that is getting and keeping the very best people. Help us inspire confidence and empower change. Apply now.

Atkins
Applications are now open!!
I joined Atkins in 2012 as a Graduate Engineer. From the start, I was informed that my progress would be supported by the Atkins Graduate Development Program. This has continued to provide me with the guidance and encouragement that is necessary to progress my career. The yearly events really help to shape you into a professional employee by building on communication, team working and organisational skills.
I was assigned a professional development mentor who takes the time to review my development reports every 3 months. This helps to keep me focused on what areas of my ability I need to develop. There are also written assignment groups available for all to attend. These sessions involve discussion of a preplanned topic with the option of having your assignment reviewed by a senior colleague.
All of the above resources given as part of the Atkins Graduate Scheme really do enable you to develop your career in an environment tailored to you. The support I have received has been fantastic and I would thoroughly recommend anyone contemplating applying to Atkins to do so.

That’s certainly been Alice’s experience. “You get lots of responsibility in the role right from the moment you step through the door. Before you know it, you could be running a department with a turnover that runs into millions of pounds,” she says. That responsibility also extends to motivating and managing people. “You’ve got to be up to the challenge of leading a team,” Alice explains. “People look up to you so good leadership qualities are really
important. You also need to be a good communicator. It’s down to you to make sure that information on head office initiatives cascades down to the store team – such as new projects or new innovations, and there are plenty of those. We’re a multi-channel retailer and there’s been a big focus on e-commerce which has seen increasing use of iPads in stores.” Alice loves the people side to the job. In every M&S store, everyone pulls together as one team, putting the customer at the heart of everything they do. “For me, the most inspiring part of the role is seeing the passion of the store team. The application process started with an online questionnaire and CV upload with successful applicants being invited to an Assessment Centre. This consisted of an interview, a group task, and a presentation delivered to the assessment panel and other
candidates. The day was fairly relaxed and a great opportunity to network with other candidates and Costain staff. Before starting work on site, all 76 of the new graduates across all different disciplines attend an Induction where you are provided with a great introduction to the company and take part in a number of group tasks and presentations. This is a great chance to not only get to know the other graduates but also to meet members of Costain staff from all levels and areas of the company. It was a busy and fun week and a nice transition from university to working life.

When deciding which companies to apply for, it was the quality of Costain’s Graduate Development Programme, and their project portfolio that appealed to me most. Why joining Tesco right now could well be the best career move Tesco
by Harriet, a Technology Graduate
company profile
I am the epitome of a New Starter at Tesco; the new kid on the block. Of the three programmes the largest British retailer offers, I have experience in two; the internship and the graduate scheme. During the summer of 2013, I participated in the summer internship with the Technology function. These ten weeks exposed me to life in a multi-national company and offered me some great opportunities to help with my career progression. From Day 1 the intake was introduced to some of the company’s directors; giving us both an insight into their role and their career, and advice on reaching the career heights to which we aspire. The following ten weeks coached us through corporate life, provided us with presentation training, and gave us vital feedback for our future; whether that be at Tesco or not, and most importantly provided us with a project to land within our time there.
At the start of September, I began my career at Tesco with the Technology Graduate scheme. This programme is an excellent one, with exposure to working in store and more of the good stuff experienced on the internship, plus more. I have been given ownership of a project with tangible result which will be rolled out to store managers UK-wide in the next 6 months. Since last summer, Tesco has changed a great deal and has been under the spotlight for some time. It had become apparent that the company has lost touch. It will see 2015 in with a new CEO and a new Chairman. No doubt people would tell you this is not the time to join the company. I’m going to tell you why they are wrong. This current bump in the road may well be more of a road made up of several sleeping policemen, (with traffic lights, and the odd roundabout for added

measure,) but Tesco is heading back onto the A road. There is no better time to be part of the injection of 200-odd “new blood” to the company than in the next few years. Our fresh eyes will help the company to mould itself and respond to new challenges, and the lessons learnt as a grad will be invaluable. If Tesco have managed to adapt from the market stall to the 3rd largest retailer in the world, it can cope with this hiccup.

Nestlé products touch millions of lives worldwide every day, from coffee and breakfast cereals to pet food, bottled water and chocolate and confectionary.
