CV & Interview Tips Ever wondered what the job market looks like today? The image to the right shows you how different October 2012 to October 2013 looks like. As you can see there were plenty more jobs in 2013 to 2012 so it is finally getting easier for everyone to get a job as there is more out there. This means in the future the job market is going to be huge if it carries on going the way that it has been in the past year.
All in all there will be 100,000 graduates in STEM subjects needed every year and an addition of another 60,000 STEM technicians and apprentices. That’s huge! The Kings Trust have predicted that there will be a fall in health and social care by 2025 and the most interesting one is according to the US of labour 65% of school students will go into jobs that have not yet been invented. Can you think of any interesting jobs that could be invented? It is all well and good that there is going to be more jobs opening up in the next few years but the competition will still be the same. So here are the basic points to make a good start to your job search. When you are applying for a job have you made sure that you CV is as good as it could be and all the relevant information is in there in all the right places? It is vital that you check all of these otherwise a lot of companies will not consider you for the job that you are applying for.
4
So make sure that you: • Have your name at the top of your CV and make it stand out. • Place your contact details below your name and make sure that your phone number is correct in case they want to get into touch with you. • Make sure that your education section is relevant so don’t put your nursery or primary school but focus on n your secondary school or college and university – making sure your most recent educational achievements are listed first • At the bottom of your CV put ‘References available on request’ to maiximise the space you have for
‘selling’ you, rather than wasting it on details of your references. • Make sure that you always spell check your CV when you have finished otherwise it will not look professional. • Make sure your CV is 2 pages or less. • Keep to that same font and make sure that it is not some crazy font that no one can read so keep it to Arial or Calibri and the make sure the font size is no smaller that 10. • Use headings and bullet points on you CV so that it makes your achievements stand out more. • Lastly make sure that your CV is tailored to every job that you apply for.
But definitely make sure that you don’t: • Put a photo on your CV • Don’t put your Date of Birth at the top • Try and make sure you do not have any gaps in the job history unless you have an explanation • Lastly never lie in your CV. You will get found out! See to the right for a rough idea to how your CV should look after this. After you have written this brilliant CV you send it off to the company that you want to work for and you get an interview with them!
You may now be thinking what on earth am I going to do before the interview, my advice to you is to research the company, look at their website find out exactly what they do, see what their core values are and have a look at their annual report. Lastly see if they have any press releases this is so that you can be on top of what the company has been up to. Make sure that you have got the location sorted and you know where you are going so that you do not get there late, and make sure that you get there 15minutes before. The day has arrived it is your interview and you are very nervous but don’t worry everyone will be in the same position even your employers would have been in the same position. Make sure you wear a smart suit either a trouser suit or a skirt suit will do and whatever you do, do not chew gum. When you arrive remember that the interview starts as soon as you step through the door and make sure that you know who to ask for on arrival and always hold your hand out first for a hand shake and make sure it is firm when you meet your potential employer. When you are in the interview make sure you have gone over some interview questions so when they ask you them you have a rough idea of what you are going to answer. Here are some examples of the types of question that you will probably get during an interview • Why are you looking for this opportunity? • What made you apply for this job? • What do you think you could bring to this role /company? • What do you think it will take to be successful in this role? • Give an example of when you had to demonstrate a certain skill? E.g. Team work, innovation, project management or good communications. • What are your strengths? • What are your weaknesses? Lastly make sure that you have some questions for your employers such as : • How do you see this role developing after time? • Is this a new role? If not why is the person currently placed leaving? • What will the key priorities for the person starting this role? • What sort of training and development opportunities do you offer? Remember do not ask for information that has already been provided in the original job description and advert e.g. salary! If you need any help on any other interview questions that you think you will have then go to your careers office as they should be able to help you with this or visit the Bright Futures website as we have lots of tips to help you.

Universities at Medway Bright Futures Society
There are entrepreneurs springing up everywhere and every year and among a wide variety of disparate cultures. Gender, age, creed and sexuality are no barriers to dreaming up a bright idea, pursuing it and excelling at it. The notion of working for oneself, being one’s own boss and having control of one’s financial destiny has been with man for time immemorial but there are very few of us courageous enough to take the plunge.
Medway Bright Futures Society, a south east London not-for-profit voluntary organisation that inspires, empowers young and mature students through workshops, networking events, company insight days and many more hosted a one of a kind high profile business seminar dedicated to the students of the Deptford Green Secondary School. Organised by young visionary Osheane Cambers and his team Donna Alexis, Dawn Richards, Sam Norman, Serban Chiscop and Nathan Cotter the event attracted accomplished entrepreneurs and pioneers in their own right such as Nathaniel Peat, Carly Ward, Lorna Stewart, Keshav, Chelsey Baker and the notorious, controversial and charismatic Levi Roots. The event was moderated by inspirational speaker / author Vanessa Mclean who did a fantastic job providing appropriate anecdotal quotes which put each presenter’s rendering in context. All the presentations were first class and had the students keen and participative. As a prelude to the presentations Lorna provided a useful warm up session to get the students focused on the overriding theme of the presentations by posing questions geared toward having them think of what careers they’d like to undertake; got the ball rolling.
6
The first presentation was delivered by Keshav who outlined his experience as a young entrepreneur and the peculiarities of being an Asian entrepreneur. He stressed the need for discipline and focus. Keshav was swiftly followed by Lorna who gave a very emotional account of her early life and the innumerable challenges she overcame to finally be the well respected entrepreneur she is today. She too gave credence to the need to be focused and steadfast to the belief in oneself. Immediately following Lorna was serial entrepreneur, former model and author, Chelsey Baker. Chelsey’s path bore some resemblance to Lorna’s as they both started out with little or no formal qualifications but used determination, wit, street smarts and a firm belief in their own ability to accomplish their dreams. Then followed Carly Ward an ambitious young woman who got fed up of being unemployed and unable to find the right job, started a business centred around a programme that teaches young people entrepreneurial and life skills. Following Carly Ward was Mr. Energetic himself, Nathaniel Peat. Nathaniel who could be seen edging to be called to the podium, jumped to his feet in his
usual enthusiasm an launched into a most engaging presentation that saw him give away a £10.00 note emphasising the point that there are opportunities everywhere but many of us don’t action the opportunity and consequently lose out. Nathaniel used some practical exercises engaging the students that at times had the auditorium in stitches. He too echoed the message of his predecessors, the need to be focused and disciplined if one is to accomplish anything in life, particularly in business.
Feedback:
And finally, the one and only, Dragon Slayer, author, serial entrepreneur, chef Levi Roots. Levi, billed as the headline presenter did not disappoint. Dressed in a burgundy suit and equipped with his signature box guitar Levi entered the auditorium from the rear playing and singing… the students went wild and cheered rapturously. Quite cleverly, Levi used audience participation, as Nathaniel before him, to illustrate the value of taking up opportunities. He staged a singing contest that required three student singers to stand beside him and render their version of his famous Reggae Reggae Sauce song.
speakers exemplified on the day, leaving the young
The student audience voted with their screams for their favourite performer and a winner was adjudged and awarded a prize. The students absolutely loved the exercise and listened to every word he uttered thereafter as he took them on a short journey into his past highlighting the significant challenges that seemed to have characterised his life. Levi was very clear about his undying resolve to improve his life by stepping away from his menial job in 2005 and focusing on his sauce which lead him to the BBC Dragon’s Den in 2006 where his life changed forever.
Host Vanessa Mclean - From Idea to Enterprise” organised by Bright Futures at Medway and Greenwich. “It is always touching to see young peoples lives being impacted and transformed by stories of everyday people who have decided “I must stand out and make a difference” That is exactly what all the people with a vision of hope and a heart filled with desire to live and achieve their life’s purpose.” Carly: “Congrats goes to the team who organised the Bright Futures event in GEW, I’m sure the attendees would have gained an insight into the business world and it was a pleasure to take part as a guest speaker.” Keshav: “For a university society to put on such a big event with high profile speakers and so many attendees is really something special that deserves to be celebrated. The event was meticulously planned and brilliantly executed. I am sure the speakers and audience both took a great deal away from the event. Thank you for the invite!”
At the end of the event the remaining students (some left for scheduled classes elsewhere) all flocked the presenters for photographs. It was indeed a sight to behold, particularly as Levi tried unsuccessfully to slip away but was ambushed by an avalanche of students wanting autographs and photos. Did you know that Robots could be reading your CV Have you applied for a job that you thought you were the best candidate for and never heard back from? This might be because you resume has been designed for the human eye and not a robots eye so they would of kicked your CV out of the Application process because it is not how they have been programmed to read it. This is called ATS (Applicant Tracking System) and it is now used by many organisations to help streamline the hiring process so if you want to make your CV considered try and make it Robot readable by letting go of the outdated rules and focus on making it robot friendly.
12
There are many different things that employers have to go through to find the perfect candidate, ATS makes this process a lot easier.
On average: • 144 people apply for each entry level position posted • 89 people apply for each professional entry level position posted • Some huge organisations such as Google and Microsoft have received thousands of applications up to 75,000 a week. • There are only 35% of candidates that are qualified for the position they seek, which could be because a lot of the candidates only take around 50 seconds to read the job description before they apply.
Therefore friendly robots are there to help! ATS’s help to relieve the burden of screening applications, which saves the employer a lot of time and money. This technology can help the candidate too by simplifying the job application process to just a few clicks. They analyse key words, titles, dates and other critical information in candidates CV so that the employer can evaluate the depth of experience that they have. ATS can screen 75% of candidates which makes the hiring process a lot more efficient.
To make your Robot friendly resume make sure that you:
• Use keywords from the job description in your CV • Put your contact information at the top of the page • Use an executive summary and create a bulleted list of qualifications and skills • Use web standard fonts such as Arial, Tahoma and Verdana. • Make sure you check your grammar and punctuation • Make sure you spell check afterwards • Don’t use fancy formatting to make your CV look pretty • Don’t use abbreviations • Don’t use tables in your CV only use bullet points • Don’t submit a PDF • Lastly make sure you upload your CV do not Copy and Paste it into an Email 17

GE’s Edison Engineering Development Programme (EEDP)
!
What does the Edison Graduate Scheme entail? Classic Edison is split between A and B course. A course comprises 33 weeks of lectures and homework which expand your knowledge and show how the application of engineering fundamentals and mathematical problems are used at GE. Most weeks you work individually to strengthen your personal development and academic understanding. B course is a team project, developing a Fire Detection and Mapping Unmanned Air Vehicle System.
What has been the most valuable aspect? The opportunity to work and develop as an independent engineer, and as a member of a team, has been the most valuable aspect for me. This opportunity has helped me complete individual tasks and work better within a team which has benefited my project work. What project rotations have you experienced? My Hardware rotation provided me the opportunity to work on Power Distribution Panels for seven months, involving PCB schematic design and creating technical drawings. I also worked in the Software Team for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This introduced me to software engineering and software coding. My third rotation has brought me to Mechanical Systems, where I have been working on various projects, including a product update involving a change of manufacturing method.
What is your advice for someone thinking about the program? Edison is a challenging but highly rewarding program. The rotations provide an opportunity to experience different projects in different subject areas which is great if you are unsure where you want to work after University. There are also numerous opportunities for personal development as well as meeting, and working with, lots of new people.

company profile
TJX Europe boasts one of the most dynamic supply chains in the industry. It’s important that our supply chain is just as dynamic as our buying model. The quicker merchandise gets to stores, the quicker it sells, so we’ve developed a highly sophisticated and unique approach to processing, warehousing and distribution. This involves extremely short supply chain routes with distribution services provided by five Processing Centres (PC) located in Stoke, Walsall and Wakefield in the UK, Wroclaw in Poland and Bergheim in Germany. If you join Distribution as a Graduate, you will be given the tools to push yourself to be a First Line Manager within a year and then be responsible for running a fast moving, high volume part of the business.
This is what Ben, one of our First Line Managers at the Wakefield PC has to say about working with us: What is it like to work at TJX Europe? Definitely different every day, quick and fast paced. A great place to be in going forward. Fun atmosphere.
Tell me about the training you received. My induction was great. It taught me how things work from grass roots upwards and how my role integrates into it and how it impacts the wider business.
What is a typical working day like? There is not a typical day in PCs. Every day is different, product is varied and so are the people. The business model demands flexibility in response to retail sales. So every day is different and you have different challenges to overcome. How much responsibility do you have? A lot of responsibility, I am responsible for 50 people, who process a high volume of stock whilst ensuring great quality and service to stores.
