Well this is the time where you will find what it is all about. This year National Careers week is from the 3rd-7th March and it will be happening all over the country! National Careers week is a celebration of careers guidance and free resources in schools, colleges and Universities across the country. The aim of National Careers Week is to provide a direction for careers guidance activity at an important stage in the academic calendar to help support young people when they are leaving education. This could be when you finish School/ College or University you are given advice on what the different routes are available to you, whether it is to go to university or to take an apprenticeship, or when you finish university. National Careers week will help you to decide which career route to take and show you how to get a graduate job suitable that suits you! National Careers week encourages educational institutes to bring students, local employers and advisors together by holding careers events and activities throughout the week. During the week it is up to all schools, academies and colleges to offer advice about their student’s careers. Are you starting to hear a lot more that dreaded question “what are you going to do when you leave University?” When you were choosing your degree you probably thought that this will set me up for my future career or you had an interest in that subject when at school and were keen to study it further. Half way through your degree you may have started to think ‘do I actually want to have a career in….’ Or alternatively you may have picked a degree with no thought for your future career, it was more that you enjoyed the subject and you felt you would worry about your career later. So you may now have started to think about what to do when you have finished University and it completely scares you because you are just not sure what is out there that would suit you and worst of all there is so much coming at you, you don’t know where to start…
10
So rather than try and find the answer now and in one go we suggest 3 simple things you can do: 1. Talk to the Careers Service at your University as they will be able to help you better understand your options and help direct you. They can also help you understand different ways that you could make yourself more employable, what work experience would benefit you etc. 2. Get actively involved with your Bright Futures Society on campus. By attending their event you can meet a range of employers and find out what is and what is not for you. They will also run events which help you get clear on the skills employers seek and how you can develop them. These events delivered by employers will, whatever their content, also help you build your professional network and who knows one of them may end up being your future employer! 3. Lastly you can use the internet to help you. There are many online quizzes & questionnaires that claim to help you find the career that is best for you. A particularly good one is www.allaboutcareers.com/career-test and it just might help point you in the right direction. So if you are worried about what to do when you finished University don’t. But don’t wait for lightning to strike…as we say at Bright Futures ‘it’s fine to not know what you want to do for a career, but it’s probably not a good idea to do nothing about it’. So take some action and start
exploring possible careers.

James Associate Buyer – Wall Décor Why did you decide to join TJX Europe? After graduating from university I wanted to get into retail as I had spent a lot of time working on the shop floor of other retailers, so I really wanted to see what happens behind the scenes at head office. I started looking for graduate schemes and was really drawn to TJX Europe’s. With a clear career path and training schedule it was really attractive.
12
Tell me about your career progression.
I joined the business just over four years ago on the Graduate Programme as an Allocation Analyst. The business really has development at the forefront and really enables us to drive our own career. I was then promoted to Senior Analyst then Assistant Merchandiser and then finally Merchandiser. At each step the business was there to help me gain the skills I required for my new role. Now I have just moved out of Merchandising into Buying where I have started my new role as an Associate Buyer for our Wall DĂŠcor department.
What is a typical working day like?
As an Associate Buyer I am in our Head Office on a Monday, and for the rest of the week I’m out and about visiting suppliers, buying great goods with the Buyers for all our stores in Europe. In the past few months I have been everywhere from China to India, Barcelona to Copenhagen, to exotic Skegness and Belfast. As we buy goods every week, from loads of different suppliers, no day is the same and every day comes up with different challenges and I learn something new every day.
How much responsibility were you given?
From day one in all the roles in the business you are given a lot of responsibility, more than I thought when I first started. You are empowered to make your own decisions rather than having a long drawn out approval process. It feels like you are working for your own store. Risk taking is really important in our business and the great thing is, if it works, then fantastic, and even if not, as long are you learn from your mistakes, that’s good as well.
Tell me about your ongoing development since you joined TJX Europe.
You have the opportunity to drive your own development and career forward and there will always be support from the business to aid this. No matter what role you are in, from a new Allocation Analyst to a Merchandiser and beyond, there are dedicated training sessions there for your development. These range from classroom based sessions to online learning to reading books. 13
Phoebe’s Pantry
This month it is Pancake Day on the 4th March (yes I know the day everyone has been waiting for, where it is acceptable to eat pancakes at anytime of the day). I know a lot students opt out and buy the ready made mix that you can buy in the supermarkets because they don’t know how to make pancakes from scratch so here it is, the real recipe!
14
For the pancake mixture • 110g/4oz plain flour, sifted • Pinch of salt • 2 eggs • 200ml/7fl oz milk mixed with 75ml/3fl oz water • 50g/2oz butter
To serve • Caster sugar • Lemon juice • Lemon wedges or whatever you fancy
Preparation method
1. Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl with a sieve held high above the bowl so the flour gets an airing. Now make a well in the centre of the flour and break the eggs into it. Then begin whisking the eggs - any sort of whisk or even a fork will do - incorporating any bits of flour from around the edge of the bowl as you do so. 2. Next gradually add small quantities of the milk and water mixture, still whisking (don’t worry about any lumps as they will eventually disappear as you whisk). When all the liquid has been added, use a rubber spatula to scrape any elusive bits of flour from around the edge into the centre, then whisk once more until the batter is smooth, with the consistency of thin cream. Now melt the 50g/2oz of butter in a pan. Spoon 2 tbsp of it into the batter and whisk it in, then pour the rest into a bowl and use it to lubricate the pan, using a wodge of kitchen paper to smear it round before you make each pancake. 3. Now get the pan really hot, then turn the heat down to medium and, to start with, do a test pancake to see if you’re using the correct amount of batter. I find 2 tbsp is about right for an 18cm/7in pan. It’s also helpful if you spoon the batter into a ladle so it can be poured into the hot pan in one go. As soon as the batter hits the hot pan, tip it around from side to side to get the base evenly coated with batter. It should take only half a minute or so to cook; you can lift the edge with a palette knife to see if it’s tinged gold as it should be. Flip the pancake over with a pan slice or palette knife - the other side will need a few seconds only - then simply slide it out of the pan onto a plate. 4. Stack the pancakes as you make them between sheets of greaseproof paper on a plate fitted over simmering water, to keep them warm while you make the rest. 5. To serve, sprinkle each pancake with freshly squeezed lemon juice and caster sugar, fold in half, then in half again to form triangles, or else simply roll them up. Serve sprinkled with a little more sugar and lemon juice and extra sections of lemon.

GE’s Edison Engineering Development Programme (EEDP)
The Edison Engineering Development Programme (EEDP) is GE’s oldest Graduate Scheme, with the first cohort being recruited in 1923. It has existed continually since its inauguration, and is now being run across all GE businesses. There are currently 1,100 individuals (known as “Edisons”) on the scheme, at 66 sites, in 26 countries. It is recognised for its rigorous nature, which includes 33 technical lectures with homework during the first year, a collaborative 2nd year technical project, 2 overseas training courses, all alongside two years of in-depth project rotations. However, it is also recognised for developing domain knowledge, and producing future technologists, research specialists and senior company leaders.
To celebrate EEDP, and underline its global nature, ten Edisons from the Cheltenham site joined over 400 others from across the world, for the first Edison Summit in Orlando, Florida. They were joined by eleven Vice-Presidents and other Leaders from GE Aviation, Oil & Gas, Power & Water, Healthcare, Transportation, Appliances & Lighting, Energy Management and Global Research.
Near the end of the summit, two highly inspiring talks were provided. In PEAKonomics Alison Levine (Team Captain of the first American Women’s Everest Expedition) talked about Leadership and Success Strategies. Then, in a talk entitled “Failure is not an option” Astronaut Fred Haise shared his experiences flying to the moon as the Lunar Module Pilot in the Apollo 13 mission.
During the three-day gathering, there were many opportunities to learn about advances in technology from across the company, as well as workshops on engineering collaboration, cyber-security, career management, networking and connecting with customers.
The summit was concluded with an address, via video link by GE Chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt.

Top Tips on preparing your application TJX Europe
If you are currently preparing your applications to apply for a Graduate or Placement Programme we have some great tips to help you stand out:
company profile
Research Sounds obvious to some people, but make sure you research us (or any other company that you are applying for) and the programmes we offer before applying. The research you do upfront will help you throughout the whole process from application through to Assessment Centre. It will help you stand out from other candidates and allow you to make informed decisions about what is right for you.
Your CV/resume is the first thing a company sees once you have submitted your application. It is the most important marketing tool as it is designed to “show us who you are on paper” and ultimately help get you to the next stage of the recruitment process alongside the application questions. If you come to an Assessment Centre it will also be used by the assessors in the interview so make sure you know and can talk about the content in your CV/resume.
Come visit us at an Event Speaking with employees at an Event before you apply is another great way of doing some research. It will give you invaluable insights into what it is like to work at TJX Europe and the different programmes we offer. It also means we get to meet you for the first time too.
You should ensure that your CV/ resume is a clear and well-presented overview of information about you. It should present your qualifications, skills and attributes in a way that shows your suitability for the role you are applying for. It may be helpful to follow a set structure, for example:
Apply early As you may have seen we recruit on a rolling basis, as do lots of companies, so we do not have any application deadlines. This means that we recruit on a first come first served basis so we would always encourage you to apply early to avoid any disappointment. Putting together your CV or resume
• Personal Details: your personal details should go at the top of your CV/ resume. You want to make it easy for us to know how to contact you. Ensure you include your name, address, telephone number(s) and e-mail address. Double check you have spelt these correctly. • Education: list your most recent educational information first. For each degree-level qualification include the degree type eg. Bachelors, Masters etc., which university you studied
at, the subject studied and the classification grade you received. If you do not yet have your final grade, put the grade you expect to receive. Ensure you include your A Levels and GCSE grades or equivalent. • Work Experience: you should list your most recent job first and work backwards. Include dates of employment, the name of the organisation, location of work (city and country). Then summarise your experience focusing on the specific skills and achievements you gained. Bullet points are fine to use when listing your skills and achievements. • Skills: It can be helpful to list key or special skills such as language skills or IT literacy • Hobbies and interests: this is a great way for us to learn a little bit more about you and the things you like to do outside or your studies and work. It could also include clubs and societies you are involved in. Your CV/resume should be no more than two A4 sides and should be well structured and easy to read. Spell checking and accuracy are really important. We recommend that you ask lots of people to look at your CV/ resume (eg. friends, family, careers advisors) and give you feedback.
For more tips and advice on the whole application process please visit our website: graduates.tjxeurope.com/ 20

Employment history Although we do accept candidates without any work experience, it is always useful to demonstrate any
work experience that you have had – even part time or summer work.
Hints and tips: Check spelling and grammar.
Training/professional bodies If you have completed any training or are a member of any of the professional bodies e.g. iMechE, IET, Raes it would be good to detail this here.
Ensure that your answers are specific to the role/programme for which you are applying.

What does the 2 year dunnhumby Global Products & Services (GP&S) Graduate Scheme involve? The scheme is split into four 6 month rotations: • An introduction to our data teams/technologies and how these are managed. • The global capabilities rotation gave me great exposure to management strategy and wider industry trends, helping me to see how we can be working better globally. • Our product development rotation provides insight into the design and development of our bespoke products.
