editors letter Hello everyone! I don’t doubt you are wishing these next few weeks away as assignment deadlines and exams linger so you can get out and enjoy the sun. But, our May Ezine is here which includes a couple of things to keep you occupied until then… Whilst we’re thinking about the Summer, we have given some thought into ways in which you can use the break to your CV’s advantage – all of which are fun and adventurous too! These are to help you plan the many ways in which to spend your sunny days, whilst ensuring that you really catch employers’ eyes when they’re scanning your CV. Check it out on pages 10-11. Some more exciting news we have for May is proudly announcing the winner of the Clifford Chance ‘Intelligent Aid’ Competition – LSE student Farah Rohaizat! A huge well done to Farah who was up against over 400 other students, and came out on top winning a two week Vacation-Scheme with the global law firm and £5,000 towards her tuition fees! Hear all about her success on page 4-5… We also pose the question “Are You Making the Most of University?” on pages 6-7 which is a reminder that uni isn’t just about your degree. We’ve spoken to three students, one of which is a BF President, about how they took every opportunity to make
the most of their experience! MyKindaCrowd also explain what you can expect by participating in one of their hundreds of employability-focussed workshops on pages 8-9, inspiring you to take that next step towards your dream career. the chance of a lifetime! A MyKindaCrowd workshop at City University London

LSE student wins a place on a coveted Vacation Scheme with global law firm Clifford Chance and ÂŁ5,000 towards her tuition fees.
Beating over 400 entrees to scoop the top spot of the 2015 Intelligent Aid competition, Farah Rohaizat will join 19 other students this August to take a place on a twoweek Vacation Scheme with Clifford Chance. Now in its fifth year, Intelligent Aid is a unique essay based competition which invites students from all backgrounds and disciplines to bypass the traditional route of online applications and assessment days, to win valuable experience with the prestigious firm. To support the campaign, MyKindaCrowd hosted 15 interactive university workshops to introduce students to this year’s question on the ‘rule of law’ and to provide hints and tips on writing a winning essay. Farah attended a workshop at City University London and shares her story: “Participating in the Intelligent Aid competition was an immensely enriching experience. The competition involved writing a response to the question, ‘The Rule of Law is essential
in ensuring an economy’s success?’ I decided to apply because I looked forward to the challenge of writing a response to an interesting, thoughtprovoking and topical question. Additionally, the ability to develop and demonstrate my commercial awareness throughout the process appealed greatly to me. I attended the Intelligent Aid workshop organized by MyKindaCrowd and was left inspired. The workshop involved a discussion and presentation on essay-writing tips such as identifying the scope, defining key terms and thinking creatively. I made a note of these pointers, put them into practice and submitted my essay after researching extensively and writing many drafts. I was delighted when I received an email invite to the Finals, a 2-day event held at the Canary Wharf offices. 20 participants were awarded a vacation scheme following success at the assessment at this stage. There were group activities and several presentations about public speaking techniques, Clifford Chance’s various departments and the work the firm was involved in. We were then treated to a dinner with the Graduate
Recruitment team and partners that night. The hardworking and passionate individuals I met at the firm thoroughly impressed me. They were approachable and willing to answer all of our questions. The assessment on the second day was challenging as I had to think quickly and deeply on the issues I had presented earlier. I enjoyed this experience and it felt surreal when I was eventually declared the overall winner and awarded £5000 towards my university fees! I had learnt so much from the process and winning it was an incredible bonus. I cannot wait for my vacation scheme in the summer to begin! I highly recommend Intelligent Aid to any aspiring solicitor looking for a challenge and the chance to impress, as it is a wonderful opportunity.”

Are you making the most of university? Whether you like it or not your time at university will fly by, so maybe now is a good time to ask yourself ‘am I making the most of it? Universities are a hotbed for personal and professional development opportunities, but more often than not they don’t just land in your lap. We asked three students about their involvement with additional initiatives beyond their academic studies, and the benefits of differentiating themselves in a very competitive job market.
Papi Viselova Third Year BA (Hons) Business Management University of Worcester After returning from a placement year in Germany in 2013 I joined the Worcester Bright Futures society as an Event Organiser as I was looking for an opportunity to develop my personal and professional skills. One of the best moments for me was being accepted as a part-time Finance intern with Sanctuary Group after meeting a contact at a regional event I organised. Thanks to the opportunity, I am currently not only studying the theoretical part of my future job but putting the knowledge into practice. This academic year I was the President of Worcester Bright Futures and was even offered to be sponsored for an Investment Banking Graduate role with HSBC. What else may I wish for, except as a graduate to be noticed by the employers?! Very excitingly however I will be moving to Brussels in September to begin a traineeship with Toyota. My advice to every student would be to use the opportunities that they have while studying at university. Especially, to join a society that would give them the chance to wear many hats, try out new ideas, and to be with people who share their interests and believe in a better world.
Oli Monks Fourth year BA(Hons) Management and Entrepreneurship Lancaster University I’m a “do-er” of things and have tried to throw myself into as many opportunities as I can at university and beyond. Many of the opportunities I’ve been involved in have come through my own Students’ Union, particularly around social ventures both locally and nationally, and now I’m working on a project with Telecommunications Company ‘Three’ through MyKindaCrowd (MKC). One of my most memorable moments would be joining the launch of the Deputy Prime Minister’s ‘Opening Doors’ campaign (an inspiring employabilitybased talent tour for young people organised by MKC) 6

Abtahee Islam Fourth year BSc (Hons) International Business Management University of Surrey My advice to students would be to get involved with as many opportunities as possible and give it your all! Through a combination of extra-curricular activities I have reaped benefits I wouldn’t have expected. I have met individuals who have become my best friends, people who have inspired me to achieve my goals and guidance on how to get there as well as making a breadth of contacts with employers, partners and customers. I have found myself more pro-active in my approach, more open to ideas and more confident interacting with others than before. Through attending student enterprise workshops and networking events I have developed a wide range of skills which I have been able to put to good use both in the workplace and at University. These include communication, presentation, network building, teamwork, project management and many more including some key ones that people tend to overlook such as emotional intelligence. Whether you are contributing to changing lives through a social enterprise, setting up your own business, involved in a sports team, Bright Futures society, or doing MKC challenges, if you give it your all I am sure you will reflect on it in the near future and feel it was worth it. 5 out of 6 of the competency questions I was asked in my final interview with Unilever I was able to answer with practical examples from extracurricular activities. Without those experiences I would not have got my 12 month placement with them. Without extra-curricular activities I would have struggled to answer questions effectively for just the first stage of application for any of the jobs I have applied for in the past.

Workshops with a difference Capturing both the attention and imaginations of a room full of students can be no mean feat, even sometimes when there are fantastic employers and opportunities involved. When considering that MyKindaCrowd deliver hundreds of employability focussed workshops across the UK each month, leaving all participants inspired and upskilled is of prime importance. So how do we do it? Using trained actors, of course.

Tutor manager James Merry tells us how: • What can a student expect from a MKC workshop? “An MKC workshop is a unique opportunity for students and young people to connect and engage with big brands and businesses. Sometimes it is so hard to get a ‘foot in the door’ with big employers and demonstrate what you can offer and our workshops are a platform where students have a unique opportunity to showcase themselves. A typical format for an MKC workshop would be an introduction to a ‘challenge’ set by the company followed by a step by step breakdown and investigation of how to best approach the challenge. More often than not, the prizes attached are CV enhancing opportunities such as work experience, internships and mentoring.
• What is your role as a tutor? A tutor is responsible for facilitating the workshop so once we are with a group of students it is our job to engage and motivate them. We try to simplify our explanations of a company’s operations in order to make the challenge more accessible and then we have to ‘sell’ the value of participating. This is rarely a struggle as the students can see from the outset that it is a fantastic opportunity, regardless of the prize. Younger students obviously tend to engage with the physical and tangible prizes like iPads etc but older students recognise how important the chance of work experience, an internship or even a job is to their future.
• What is the benefit of using trained actors as facilitators? We use trained actors as tutors at MKC because we see the value and importance of having our challenges delivered in an entertaining and dynamic way. We have to stand out from students regular teachers/lecturers and other visitors to the school and actors have that unique ability to engage and hold a crowd through what can be quite complex content. We can sprinkle some humour and storytelling skills into the mix also and this all helps with getting students onside and keen to get involved.
• What is the best thing about being a tutor? The best thing is participating in ‘Winner’s Days’ which are often held at a company’s HQ. These days are the climax of a challenge where students from far and wide have been whittled down and invited to compete for the final prize. The joy and pride on the faces of the students when they win is priceless and it makes all the effort and miles covered during the challenge delivery worth it!
• What has been your favourite campaign to work on? My favourite workshop to lead was for the Clifford Chance “Intelligent Aid” competition. The workshops were always so well attended and the name Clifford Chance was a huge pull and not just for law students. It was so stimulating on an intellectual level and rewarding when we heard how many attendees of MKC workshops had made it through to the finals of the competition. I always tend to favour the challenges set by companies who are looking to open up more prospects for students who may not usually have access to such opportunities. James Merry, Tutor Manager at MyKindaCrowd 9
How your Can help your CV The muchanticipated Summer break is approaching! It’s almost time to say goodbye to assignment deadlines and exams and start planning how you’re going to relax a little and take some time for yourself.
Whilst catching up with friends, going on holiday and hitting up the best festivals might be your first thoughts, you could also take some time for your own self-development by taking on new opportunities and putting some extra experience under your belt. Employers are often keen to know what you like to do in your free time, so we’ve come up with a few ways that you can give your CV that extra kick during the summer. 10
Work Experience
Travel
This is an obvious choice, and, we all have that Dream Company whom we would love to work for to make our CV sparkle. The problem is, it is often competitive to land a summer placement with a lot of these companies, so don’t be down-hearted if you are unsuccessful, . look around for some smaller, maybe local, similar businesses that would offer you a summer placement or Internship. It’s all about building your way up. This will give you insight into whether you want to pursue that particular career, or provide vital experience for future job applications, whilst earning a bit of money too!
Where have you always wanted to go? Travelling isn’t a qualification or a work placement – but it’s a life experience. You might not see it as a beneficial attribute to your CV but sometimes employers commend graduates who have taken the courage to go and explore (and even work) in a different part of the world independently.
Naturally, this demonstrates life skills which a degree cannot provide – you are financially independent, courageous, and willing to take risks into an otherwise unknown situation. You will be surprised what you find out about yourself and thesummer offers the time and weather to adventure somewhere new.
