Careers in Banking and Finance Banking and finance are one of the most sought-after career options amongst graduates and despite the recent global economic crisis, this sector still has a lot to offer. There are many different areas within the sector including accountancy, banking and building societies, financial planning, insurance and investments and pensions. Whatever the area, the sector is fast paced and constantly challenging – the global economy is shifting every day. Many graduates enter the sector through fast track programmes which can sometimes lead to a managerial position within the firm. The starting salary can range from £15,000 to £42,000 indicating the range of different positions and size of organisations with the major banks paying the highest salaries. Many roles, especially those with the higher salaries, demand long hours and dedication from graduates.
Benefits of working in Finance Training and development
International Travel
Being a global industry, many graduates are able to travel to the world’s financial hubs whilst working in finance. For example, JP Morgan sends all of their graduates to New York for their training.
There are many professional training and development opportunities: Many of the big organisations have structured training programmes including the opportunity to obtain professional qualifications.
Opportunities to progression
Salary and financial benefits
Social
Some of the starting salaries within the big banks are much larger than the average graduate salary and many offer a wealth of benefits including private health care, insurance, subsidised travel and food and gym membership. Bonuses are also often associated with the banking and finance sector and despite being a touchy political subject, it is still a big draw for many graduates.

Financial services firms reward high performers by advancing them through the organisation, regardless of ages, making this particularly attractive for ambitious young people!
Financial organisations have an air of seriousness and professionalism around them which is important to consider when choosing your career direction. However, many graduates tell us that there are plenty of opportunities to fun within their teams and that there is a large social scene which goes along with the long hours!
A key skill for working in the finance sector: Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and control your emotions and also understand what another person is feeling and act accordingly. In Finance, relationships with clients are incredibly important and being able to emphasise and understand a client’s need is key to closing deals. On another level, it is also important to use emotional intelligence within your team to understand individual’s needs. Team work is a great indicator of emotional intelligence so when applying for a career in finance, or any sector, highlight times where you have helped your team achieve a goal or worked successfully to bring a team together.

• Get to network in the evening over drinks and nibbles with Lloyds Banking Group colleagues and graduates Why a women in Finance event? Lloyds Banking Group is committed to supporting both male and female colleagues at all levels of the organisation. We know that diversity can make a material difference to the success of our business, from the way we make decisions, to how collaboratively we work. But we also know that women remain under-represented at senior levels within the financial services industry, and that often women can be put off seeking to enter what they perceive as a male-dominated industry. We believe that acting to change this situation is not only the right thing to do but a business imperative. We’ve made great progress to date, but women still remain under-represented at our senior management grades. We’ve
demonstrated our commitment to change this publicly - as part of our Helping Britain Prosper Plan – aiming to have 40% of senior roles held by women in 2020. While the roles might be senior, we know that developing our entry level talent is key, because many of our graduates go on to fulfil senior positions. Ultimately, we want to inspire more women at university to see a great future for themselves in financial services.

Starting a business whilst studying Whether you fancy yourself in a large corporate organisation or making your impact within a small company, having experience of starting your own business is a fantastic way to set yourself apart and may even inspire you to become an entrepreneur! Don’t be daunted by the phrase ‘starting a business’, it may sound like a big task but many students try it out whilst at university and your business does not have to be long term, it may just be for a few months or year. Believe it or not, your time at university is the best time to try and start a new business. As a university student you have access to top quality support and a network of students looking to get involved in projects. Whether it be a cake stand at a farmers market or a high tech new app, there is a wealth of support available to university students to help them succeed in their ventures. If nothing else, it is a great way of making a few extra pounds to make that student budget stretch a little further.
8
Coming up with business ideas Your Universities enterprise department will help you to develop your idea but to start you off, trying thinking about these things: • Evaluate your skills and knowledge so far, do you have a particular interest in a certain area or have had a hobby growing up? Use your expertise to help fuel your project, do you have a skill for making something or a knowledge of a geographic area? • Think about where you would like your career to go. This will help to make your experience much more worthwhile and be useful if you are thinking for applying for jobs! For example, if you would like to go into marketing then set up a small consultancy for local businesses by helping them with their marketing for products or services. This will
give you first-hand knowledge of creating proposals and running campaigns which is key for a job in marketing. • What is achievable? Think about your timescale and availability, if you just want to run something for less than a year then you may want something with a low amount of investment which is relatively easy to set up. A big part of entrepreneurship is failure, it is the best thing to learn from! So make sure that you are not going to lose too much if things go a bit wrong.
Where to find support when starting your business University Enterprise Department As a university student, the first place to go is your enterprise or entrepreneurship department – most likely to be found through the careers service. Most universities have a dedicated team who support student entrepreneurs with advice, funding and connections to mentors and support.
Careers or Enterprise Society You may also find that a society focused around enterprise or careers may run events which can inspire and educate you to develop your ideas.
Your course Depending on your area of study, there may be some enterprise activities that you can get involved in within your course and earn you credits, for example many business degrees have the opportunity to develop an idea as part of your course, whether it be a small project or your dissertation.
Local Networking Events If you are studying in a city or large town you are more than likely going to find a great network of entrepreneurs and small business owners who attend networking events. Going to these events are great for you to learn how others have set up
their business and get advice and feedback on your idea. It can be daunting, but networking is a crucial skill for any career so learning how to do it now will be invaluable in the future.
Other Student Entrepreneurs If going into a room of ‘adult’ entrepreneurs is a bit too much in the beginning, speak to your universities enterprise department to find out what other students are also entrepreneurs and meet them. These students will be in the same shoes as you and could be a great way of finding support if things get tough.
Global Entrepreneurship Week 16th – 22nd November 2015. One of the best times to get involved in entrepreneurship is during November as it is home to Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW).

The Big Question
Whatever approach you choose to take, this topic is one that has been at the heart of much controversy and debate and Clifford Chance are very much looking forward to reading your submission!
The concept of business ethics applies to all aspects of business conduct and is relevant to the conduct of individuals and entire organisations. In the wake of the financial crisis, culture and ethics have emerged as key themes for regulators, enforcement authorities and courts as they seek to promote systemic change. Senior individuals are increasingly held to account and the calls for criminalisation of both institutions and individuals spreading around the globe.

A graduate career in Retail Banking & Wealth Management - the first steps By Daniel J. Barrie My advice to anyone considering a career with HSBC would be to absolutely go for it! HSBC is an amazing place to work, with so much variety and opportunities to enjoy a varied and exciting career path. The best thing about working for HSBC is the people that you get to meet and work with. We are all united by our values which are to be open, dependable and connected and everyone at work tries to bring these to life every day. I feel really lucky to work for an organisation that is all about doing the right things and helping colleagues and customers and gives so much more than a career; including mentoring, career development schemes, academic qualifications, personal development courses, opportunities to get involved with charity, community initiatives and so much more! During my time with HSBC, I have been based in the North Region and have been fortunate enough to have been able to experience lots of varied and interesting placements. The great thing about working in the North is the exposure to the Senior Regional Management Team, who despite being very senior within the organisation, are really supportive and mentor you on a personal level to help you succeed. They give you different roles in key business areas - for example, I have worked in branches in Preston and Liverpool looking at growing revenues, Leeds on Business strategy planning as well as working in Aberdeen on a three month secondment which focused on recruitment and training, as well as coaching new recruits to be fully confident in serving customers. Whilst moving around with my work, it has been great to live in some brilliant cities and meet lots of interesting people who all work in different business areas. I believe that the experiences and exposure that I have had working in the North has really supported my development and has set me up for a successful career in the organisation. The Graduate Programme exceeded all of my expectations that I had prior to starting. I thought it would be fun, challenging and interesting and it was all of these things and more. The programme is incredibly
fast paced with so many opportunities to get involved in different projects and initiatives and as well as my day job, I have done so much more than I would have thought possible; including organising a National Graduate Conference in London, presenting to the Group General Manager in the Head Office on two occasions, leading a team of graduates to raise over £300 for charity, delivering a 45 minute presentation to over 100 people at a Development Academy. I have also lead several team projects and worked with the Senior Regional Management Team to compile reports on Business Risk Management and Digital Banking within the North Region. Throughout my time on the programme, I have had so much support with personal as well as professional development. I genuinely love what I do and feel very well placed to fulfil all of my career ambitions.
you are globally mobile and get to work in different roles all over the world. The programme is extremely challenging but rewarding - it would be great to take advantage of our global presence and learn new cultures, languages and business practices. I am really fortunate that all of the support that I have had from working in the North has given me the necessary skills and experiences to apply and if successful, I will certainly be able to call upon the help and support of the network of people that I have met in my career so far.
The level of support given to me to help me find a role after the graduate programme was overwhelming. As well as support from my line manager, I was given lots of support from the Emerging talent Team and Graduate Programme Manager who went out of their way to help me find the right role. I have also had support from Area and Regional management teams, who have given me great development opportunities that have given me a big network of people to help me throughout my career. The process of finding the right role started a few months before I was due to come off Programme – together we looked at what I wanted to do, what skills I had, what I wanted to develop and what career path I wanted to pursue. Once I found the right role, I had lots of support with my application and the recruitment process and I am now twelve months into my first managerial role – a job that I absolutely love! My dream role is to become an International Manager, which is a programme that “fast tracks” people in to senior management roles. The programme is open to those who successfully come through the graduate programme and have endorsement from different stakeholders. As an International Manager,

Day one at a new job can be daunting… is there a way companies can help you get more prepared?
The whole process of searching and finding a job can be stressful and all leading up to that all important job offer! But what happens after you accept and get your start date? The countdown begins to your first day, how do you prepare? What should you wear? What will your new team be like? We are interested in your experience of starting a new job and what would help you to hit the ground running when you get into your role.
What is Pre-boarding? • The time period between job offer and day 1. • Normally new recruits would get access to a graduate Facebook page and contact with your line manager to get in touch, but more could be done with regards to pre-boarding. • For most organisations, they need to realise how important preengagement of an employee is to future success. Allie, who has just started her graduate role in marketing, told us about her own pre-boarding experience.
“In terms of contact with my manager, I did feel supported prior to starting as we exchanged quite a few calls and emails. She explained to me what the company culture was like so I knew what to expect. However, in terms of what my role would consist of I knew fairly little so on day 1 I felt very overwhelmed, I wish I had known how important excel would be in my job as I would have practised prior to starting. From speaking to my friends, most didn’t even have more than 1 email from their manager, so I think there is definitely room for improvement in this area of company engagement.” We are conducting a survey to understand what you would want from a company you had just accepted an offer from, in the time between accepting an offer and your first day. The survey should take less than 20 minutes to complete. Remember to share your name and email to be entered into the prize drawer to win the £50 amazon voucher! This is your chance to talk to employers and influence how they support graduates before their first day. We look forward to hearing from you!

Making the most of your money whilst at University Student life can be expensive at the best of times with all of the nights out and parties to go to, never mind the added financial stress of everything you need for studying towards your degree. This short guide contains our top tips for making the most of your money whilst at university!
1. Pot Noodles are not the only option – it’s a myth! There is a myth that students only eat junk food such as Pot Noodles and baked beans whilst studying away from home. The truth is that it is possible to eat healthily regardless of your budget and there are many ways to do this. The easiest way to overcome impulse purchases is by making a shopping list and sticking to it! It is also a good idea to cook in bulk and then freeze what you won’t eat immediately! This way nothing gets wasted and there is always a quick and easy alternative when the cupboards are empty! Making a packed lunch is also always going to be a cheaper alternative to buying food on the go! 2. Don’t buy brand new books just because they look nice! Many universities have second hand book sales both on campus and online so be sure to check these out! More and more texts are also being made available online so check with your digital library to see which books you need to physically purchase. Don’t buy everything in your reading list – check which books are essential (and not currently available to borrow from the library) and then look to see where you can use your student discount to take advantage of the maximum savings!
3. Take advantage of special offers and value brands for the essential items! It is only when you move away to university that you realise how much you underestimate the price of basic items such as toiletries. Shop around and see which supermarket is offering the best deal for the items you are looking for. The best way to do this is by using a comparison website such as mysupermarket.co.uk. It is also important to remember that value products are often just as good as those brands we know so well. 4. Make the most of Fresher’s discounts on household items and stationery! During the month of August in the lead up to the new school term and Freshers’ Week, there are always great bargains to be had in supermarkets on both stationery and household items for those moving into new accommodation! Stock up on notepads and pens for the semester both whilst they are on discount and whilst you have the budget!
5. Resist the temptation to head to the shops every time you have money! It is tempting that as soon as you have received your student loan or been paid that you head to the shops. We can tell you now that you will regret blowing your clothes budget in the first week of the term. There are many ways for you to save money on clothes especially by taking advantage of the student discounts available in most shops and online. You can also make money on all of those items you don’t wear anymore by using cash back websites or charities such as ‘Cash for Clothes’.

Santander
Thinking about what comes after University life? Take the next step with Santander Early in Careers!
COMPANY PROFILE
It’s the time of year when most students start thinking about their next steps, whether that be another year of study, coming face to face with the world of work or embarking on an Intern/Graduate scheme. In the Early in Career team, we’re planning for a successful campaign to bring on board individuals to join our Santander family and build a successful long-term career with us. Currently we have both Graduate and Intern opportunities ranging across a number of business areas for those individuals who want to continue developing the skills they have learned during their studies and also be challenged through contributing to projects, such as around building new digital platforms, and creating new relationships. Our Internship opportunities provide a really great snap shot into what it is like to work for Santander and dependent upon performance, also offers the chance to be given a place on the Graduate programme without having to go through the assessment process again. Not only does this relieve any pressure to complete interviews in the final year of your university life, it allows you to focus all of your efforts on obtaining the best results in your degree.
Our Internships last for 10 weeks over the summer and the feedback we have had from the latest Interns is that they were surprised as to how much they were able to learn about Santander in the time that they had in the business, how much responsibility they were given on projects and how many people they were able to meet and network with. The Internship has opened up many doors for the students helping them to understand what the world of work is all about but also giving them a flavour of what else was to come if they moved onto the Graduate programme and we’ve seen the highest numbers of Interns move onto our Graduate programmes this year, for this very reason. Lucy
Lucy says she’s been able to achieve a huge amount over the three years that she’s been at KPMG. “I’ve been working in a variety of teams and sectors, giving clients insights and advice to help protect them from risk and improve the way they operate. I’ve learnt a lot about KPMG and the wider consultancy sector – as well as developing all sorts of business skills. I started off working in data analytics before moving on to Cyber and the McLaren Alliance team. Just recently I’ve moved to our Financial Services Technology Risk team. My day-to-day role varies – I could
be doing everything from having meetings with senior people at the clients’ offices through to working on bids and proposals at KPMG.” She’s particularly proud of the positive impact her work can have for clients. “We advise our clients on technology – what they have in place and any potential updates – and this advice can make a real difference to improving how they operate.” She also has internal clients. “I had the chance to work on a project that involved looking at our own cyber strategy. It meant working closely with the Head of Cyber Security within the defence sector. That kind of exposure was a great opportunity for me to develop new skills.”
COMPANY PROFILE
“I chose to join Technology Risk Consulting because I knew I’d get a great mix of client work and training. I was also fascinated by the idea of using technology to protect and support different clients,” she says. “Cyber Security was totally new to me when I joined KPMG, but there’s been loads of training to help me learn quickly.”
KPMG
Having studied Economics and Politics at the University of Bristol, Lucy wanted to challenge herself with a career in technology. KPMG gave her the opportunity to turn her passion into an accelerated career, and she’s made the most of every opportunity since. she’s been on the committee of NextSec – a UK networking group for young professionals working in cyber security and information risk management. She’s also part of KPMG’s leadership team for BeyondMe – a nationwide initiative that matches charitable projects with businesses. “There are so many opportunities to get involved in things at KMPG. You can really push yourself here – having never picked up a rugby ball in my life before, now I’m the Ladies Captain for KPMG’s touch rugby team! I’m a member of the running club too, and of KPMG’s Network of Women (KNOW).” And Lucy’s top tip for making the most of life at KPMG? “KPMG gives you the opportunity, it’s up to you what you make of it.”
Lucy has also been busy outside of her day-to-day role. For example,
