WELCOME

from the team Welcome to the final edition of Hired for the 2015/16 academic year! By now, many of you will have finished exams and starting to wind down and focus on life outside of coursework, academic referencing and getting your favourite seat in the library. This year has been my first year as a graduate and working on this magazine has given me the opportunity to reflect on my experiences and what I would have done differently as well as hearing from other recent graduates at many of the companies MyKindaFuture work with to bring you great insights into graduate life.

that everyone had at university such as doing group projects, presentations and juggling lots of projects at once. Although these are important skills, it is usually par for the course for most degrees so why not take a look at the things which everyone didn’t do such as getting involved in events, ambassador work, societies, projects and volunteering.

Although many of us share a similar university experience from first year antics to final year meltdowns, everyone ultimately creates their own experience at university and takes away much more than a fancy certificate. Whether you are continuing on at university after this year or heading into the graduate world, take some time to reflect on what you have taken away from your time as a student.

If you are lacking in extra-curricular experience and are returning to education next year, then use your time over the summer to research the opportunities available to you at your university or in the local area. Many societies and projects will be looking for students to get involved before the start of term in September so it’s a good idea to have a look and get ahead of other students before the fresher’s fairs and welcome weeks. Summer is also a great time to develop skills through working or free time which can be spent getting involved in local community projects or work experience. We have given our 6 top tips to ensure you have a productive summer that adds to your CV over on page 4.

When reflecting on our university life for job applications or interviews, many of us tend to draw the standard experiences

If you are graduating this year, you have not missed the boat to develop your CV. If you are still looking for employment, develop

your skills whilst applying for jobs. This could be through attending employer events and networking, taking an online course, volunteering or taking part in a community project. Your university may still be running employability sessions or projects, so speak to you careers team to find out what you can do to get involved! Whatever you are doing, have a fantastic summer! We will be back in October with great insights from top employers along with lots of hints and tips to make the most out of university life and develop your employability! In the meantime, you can find out about the latest news, opportunities and events via our Facebook page, Twitter account and the MyKindaFuture website.

6 Top tips for making the most of your summer! 1. Internship or Work Experience The graduate job market is still a tough place to find yourself so why not get ahead of your peers and use your summer to gain relevant industry work experience. An internship or work experience will not only let you know whether you are on the right path, it will let you decide what type of job you’d like to end up in by the end of your course. You might decide to take an internship in an industry you have not considered before, you never know where it might lead! 2. Part time work Whether it’s the local pub, leisure centre, shop or restaurant, part time work is great for putting some pennies back in your pocket. If you are returning to a pre-university job or starting somewhere new, always look for opportunities to transfer your skills and add value to the role. Coming from university, you might be better with communicating with different types of people and working in a group of clashing personalities which could land you the role of supervisor. Remember, when employers are looking at your CV they want to see how you added value to the company above and beyond your responsibilities.

4

This is the time of year where you can take the foot off the pedal a little and relax after exams, deadlines and, what seemed like, never ending coursework! It can be very easy to reward yourself with a couple of months off and there is no doubt you will need a break but between the lie ins, parties, Netflix marathons and holidays there are a few things you can do to make your break count. We all know that good grades are not enough anymore and employers are looking for students who go above and beyond and those who make the most of their free time. Here are the 6 top tips for making the most of your summer (whilst getting a well-deserved break!)

3. Voluntary Work Volunteering can take many forms whether that’s on your doorstep or overseas! Regardless of where you volunteer, volunteering will give you valuable experience over the summer with that added ‘feel good factor’. Voluntary work will always catch an employer’s eye and can often provide some great real-life examples for you to use in interviews or application forms! 4. Go on Holiday! Perhaps the most important way to make the most of your summer is to find time to rest and relax! As much as it is important to gain experience, you should also use the summer to recharge your batteries for next year. Wherever you go, try to experience as many new things as possible. If you are abroad, take the time to learn a new language and understand the culture. Employers are looking for well-rounded people and these experiences are great for small talk when meeting employers and staff at interviews or assessment centers. 5. Get a head start on the new year If you are heading back to university this September and want to have the best experience, then use the summer to plan. A great use of your time is to think

about the extra-curricular projects you might want to get involved in and research them now. Many societies will be looking for committee members, community projects looking for volunteers and brands looking for ambassadors on campus. You might think the year starts in September but over the summer there is a massive amount of planning to make fresher’s and the new year go off with a bang so do some research online, shoot off a few emails and see what you can get involved in. Keep an eye on the MyKindaFuture website for opportunities over the summer ready for the new academic year. 6. Get organised This might sound like the most boring thing to do but bear with us… Spend some time organizing your notes and folders so you have the crucial parts on hand for your work next year, if you are going into your final year this is particularly important as you will regularly find yourself using theories and research which you learnt all the way through your degree. Go and get some snazzy stationary, buy your books early and the first lecture after the fresher’s period won’t seem so much of a struggle… we hope. Take action today and make yet another step towards becoming even more employable!

GET YOUR CV RIGHT! Basic Advice • Adopt a clean layout. CV templates abound – look for one that is striking without being cluttered. Beware of using too many fonts / font sizes. • Keep it to two sides of A4, but use all the available space. It is expected & accepted that you will narrow the margins to fit more in. • Put your academic qualifications and work experience in reversechronological order. I.e. your latest degrees and jobs should be first, followed by what is older. • If you have yet to complete your degree, always put your expected degree result. • If you have any paragraph longer than 2-3 lines use bullet points instead. • Don’t miss out years. If you had a gap year, talk about it and what you learnt from it! Mysteriously missing years look at least strange and at worst suspicious.

Taking it to the next level • As a general rule, OK CVs give you the “what” (what degrees, jobs, etc); Great CVs also give you the “why” (why that degree? Why those societies/activities? Why are you doing them – what skills are you gaining?). They give a sense of who you are too. • Begin your CV with 3 key achievements and the skills you learnt from them to make it more impactful. This is better than a generic-sounding personal profile. • Many companies focus on competencies such as Leadership, Team Working, Decision Making, and Flexibility. They will be looking for evidence in your CV of these competencies, so make sure they find it! • Make sure you include your extracurricular activities – sports, societies, voluntary and part-time work. In particular, include any Positions of Responsibility you have had, “official” or not. Again, focus on what you got out of the experience rather than just “I captain the football team”.

• Give evidence for the competencies & skills you are claiming – link to your experiences. Anyone can say “I have leadership skills”, explaining where you got them makes the statement a lot more credible. • Think carefully about how much detail to include about work experience – more if it is relevant to the type of roles you want in future, less if not. Make sure you highlight what skills you gained too! • Most of all, carefully tailor your CV to the company and role you are applying for – make it easy for them to see that you are the perfect candidate! • Lastly, don’t forget to submit your new improved CV when you apply at

AT TESCO, OUR PEOPLE ARE OUR BIGGEST ASSET Phil Neale University: Leeds University Study: Management with Marketing Position/Role: Graduate Marketing What advice would you give someone applying for your role? Have a point of view and opinions, and don’t be afraid to voice them! What has been your biggest challenge? Having worked in advertising agencies prior to joining Tesco, getting my head around the sheer size of the business has been the biggest challenge. Where has your experience exceeded your expectations? The quality of people that I work with, and the expertise within the business continues to amaze me.

Do you have a support network, being on an early careers programme? My team feels like a support network, and I also have 2 mentors in the business, who I meet with regularly in a very informal but beneficial capacity. I feel supported and able to be at my best for the Marketing team. Govinda Kular University: Newcastle University Study: Information Systems Position/Role: Graduate Food What advice would you give someone applying for your role? Firstly, Research the role and understand what you want to get out of it. Do not be afraid to be yourself and challenge the accepted norms, always ask questions and seek advice/answers from others around you.

What have you enjoyed most about your role? There is genuine scope and budget to try a new and different approach to solving problems. I am encouraged to try different things, and new ways to improve the shopping experience for customers.

What has been your biggest challenge? As a buyer, you are looking after a range of products, so you need to ensure you understand the details of each item as you will be asked to make decisions on them very early on in your role.

What is the best training that you have attended? Developing Your Personal Style – a great day exploring what motivates you, how you come across to others, and how to help be the best you can be at work.

Where has your experience exceeded your expectations? Within my first role, I spent a lot of time travelling to different countries for meetings, such as visiting Budapest to meet an Energy Drinks Supplier. Also I

was given key commercial responsibilities very early on i.e. holding meetings with some of Europe’s biggest sugar suppliers, negotiating cost’s and presenting customer focused initiatives to senior members of the business. What have you enjoyed most about your role? Being given ownership and responsibility for a buying area from day one and accountability to make decisions. Also, the exposure to different areas of the business and not just the buying team, for example working closely with the marketing and commodities team. What is the best training that you have attended? Introduction to Leadership (year2) – a really interesting and insightful course. Do you have a support network, being on an early careers programme? Yes – the Early Careers programme manager, I found very supportive throughout my graduate scheme. I also have access to a mentor and buddy, which is great.

Are your hobbies your secret weapon in the graduate job hunt?

Have you considered how a love of football, music or drawing could translate into a career beyond being a footballer, musician or artist? How a passion for art could lay the foundation for a career in architecture? How excelling in drama could equip you for public speaking, sales, teaching? You might not know it, but the hobbies you enjoy now or did in school will help you get a job in the future. Not only do they look great on your CV, they also force you to lead, communicate and work as a team – the type of skills employers prioritise when sifting through applications. We’ve picked the brains of our team at MyKindaFuture to see how their skills and hobbies have helped them professionally. We also thought we’d treat you to some photos of our team when they were slightly more fresh faced...

Ben Media Manager

Penny Campaign Manager

Sport was big for me. Playing football in a team forces you to work hard towards a common goal with people you don’t know. You had to listen to the manager, but also be proactive and show initiative, suggesting alternative tactics, new approaches – everything used in a collaborative office environment when working on a group project. The social side was great as well. It allowed you to make friendships and know when to have a laugh while maintaining focus on the pitch. That balance is equally important at work – especially during stressful days. Football talk also goes down great in interview small talk!

I started working as a waitress when I was 16, and continuing through sixth form and university. Quite quickly I had to meet a variety of different people to work with, make sure customers were having a good experience and often dealing with tricky situations. This helped me massively with my confidence and how to approach a problem and come up with an effective solution on the spot. It also meant I also had to learn menus and recipes (to spot for allergies) so my attention to detail really improved.

Krish Schools Relations Manager (and former teacher)

Catherine Head of School Relations Team

From a young age, I was a keen cross stitcher which improved my attention to detail - and my patience! These are 2 skills that are really important on a daily basis, particularly when looking through vast documents and checking for errors.

I was a Flight Sgt in the Air Training Corps (ATC) where I learnt to shoot and fly. Through this when I was 15 I managed a group of 35 young people between the ages 13-21, making sure they were safe, well and developed. I planned activities, events and expeditions, and delivered training sessions - including creating displays of continuity drill (fancy patterns through marching!). This gave me great experience of leadership, project and people management, creativity and giving clear instructions. A large aspect of this hobby was about authority and structure, so I’m great at seeing where there is a lack of processes, understanding what needs to be done and implementing them.

At school I was also Head of School Council. This gave me the confidence to be able to argue my point in an effective way, listening to students’ concerns and thinking practically about how to problem solve - which was really useful in my role as a teacher, communicating with numerous different stakeholders: writing emails, at parents’ evenings and making phone calls. In confrontational situations I needed to think quickly and calmly on my feet.

HINTS AND TIPS FOR APPLICATION SUCCESS We look at the interview as a two-way experience. While we want to know all about your skills and experience, we expect you to learn more about us beforehand

• Ask questions and be yourself. • Help your interviewer by answering questions clearly and succinctly.

Here are a few suggestions to help you prepare for your interview:

If you’re successful at the technical interview stage, we’ll invite you to an assessment centre. Here are a few tips that may help:

• Research. Look over our website and recent media articles. If we visit your campus, come and talk to us.

• Try to get a good night’s sleep beforehand so that you feel alert and ready.

• Try to be clear on your motivation for wanting to join us and be ready to explain why.

• Allow plenty of time for your journey so that you don’t arrive late. We understand that journeys don’t always go to plan so build in some contingency time and let us know as soon as you can if you are held up. We don’t want you to arrive feeling anxious or rushed.

• Be prepared to speak about the significant achievements in your life – both academic and personal. • Familiarise yourself with the skills you’ll need to be successful here and what best demonstrates those skills. • Help your interviewer by answering questions clearly and succinctly. Give concrete examples where appropriate. • Don’t be afraid to stop and think before giving responses. • Be willing to articulate problems or challenges you’ve encountered.

• You are not in direct competition with the other candidates. It’s possible that everyone on the centre will meet the criteria we are looking for. So there’s no need to compete with other candidates. • Take time to think about your approach rather than just launching into an exercise. If you are unclear about anything, ask us. We want everyone to start the exercises knowing what the instructions are. • Try to enjoy the day. We’ve tried to make it challenging but enjoyable. The best advice we can give you is ‘be yourself’. • Don’t worry if one exercise doesn’t go as well as you would want – it’s not unusual for people to feel as though they could have done better. We’ll do everything we can to make you feel welcome. We hope you’ll enjoy your day and decide we are right for you.

• Make sure you have meals and refreshments during the day to keep your energy levels up. It’s also probably best to avoid excessive amounts of caffeine. • Don’t worry if one exercise doesn’t go as well as you would want – it’s not unusual for people to feel as though they could have done better. Just move on to the next exercise and give it your best shot.

DHL offers a diverse Graduate Programme covering a number of different streams. All streams offer our graduates the opportunity to experience different sectors and areas of our business – what a fantastic opportunity so early on in your career!

The programme has been in the business for many years, and we are proud to say we have some real success stories of people who have progressed in the organisation and are now our leaders. Hear what they have to say about their experience. What makes the DHL Graduate Programme unique? • The ability to work for such a great company and the fast-track to management/senior opportunities. I would never have gotten to where I am now without the graduate programme. It’s also the fact that so many senior people in the organisation are advocates of the programme and this gives graduates access to highly successful people that they can learn from and chat to regarding their development. • The variety of opportunity available not only during the programme but after. The range of placements which graduates have access to is huge. You are given the opportunity to really explore and understand the business, and see which opportunities fit your skills and interest. No area of the business is out of scope. Where else would you get this opportunity at this point in your career!

What was your favourite experience during the programme? • In addition to our placements, we have the opportunity to work on a real life group business project, and at the end we had the opportunity to present back to the CEO of the UK & Ireland business, and all of the other senior project sponsors. It was an amazing opportunity and such a proud moment to think that the project we had worked on for 6 months was going to be implemented into the business. How has being on the programme helped your career in DHL and helped you to accomplish what you have? • It really gave me the confidence to believe in my abilities and challenge myself in the opportunities and roles I have been involved with so far. This has been through the various module days, the graduate project and the mentor scheme. • The emphasis on networking throughout the programme encouraged me to develop a network of people that I can learn a great deal from and who can support me with each step I take. This has helped to open doors to new opportunities but has also helped me to develop knowledge and skills that other people have accumulated over a long career within DHL.

www.dhl.co.uk

What advice would you give to new DHL Graduates, or those considering applying for the programme? • Jump in and don’t shy away from any opportunities which appear – make the most of the programme and show your willingness to get involved. You don’t have anything to lose! • Be open minded when it comes to your placements – there are a huge range of different placements available and to have access to these you need to be open minded and not too set on the path you want to take. • Be flexible and show your adaptability to change. Some of our operational environments can be high pressured with a lot of responsibility so prepare yourself and demonstrate to the business your resilience.

Meet Chanel, an Audit Graduate Trainee at KPMG Even before Chanel had finished studying Economics with Central and East European Studies at Birmingham University, she felt sure that she wanted to embark on a career at KPMG. “When I was at university, KPMG was always my favourite of the Big Four firms,” she says. “I was confident that I’d thrive in the environment and felt well informed, as I’d spoken to lots of KPMG employees at different networking events. I liked the idea that I’d be able to add value to all sorts of different organisations, and especially the fact that I’d be working on real projects for real clients right from the start. I definitely made the right choice – I had high expectations and they’ve actually been exceeded. I’m making a difference to tech telecoms and media companies – whether they’re small firms or huge multinationals.” Even though Chanel was confident that KPMG was the ideal place for her, she was still a little apprehensive on her first day. “I felt a bit out of my depth – as though I was a soon-to-be-discovered fraud amongst the other 10 or so new starters. But I quickly realised that it was just nerves because everyone was having first day jitters. We were all quickly put at ease during the induction.”

Chanel says she’s found the support on offer to be excellent. “When I first started I was given lots of responsibility, but I was always supported by managers, my mentor and my team. The best advice I was given was ‘rule number one; ask questions.’ I’ve never felt lost in my role. I’ve used other graduates as a sounding board and because I’ve worked closely with them, I’ve built some great relationships.” It’s thanks to the support she’s had from her peers and her more experienced colleagues that Chanel’s confidence has grown and grown. “I’ve successfully navigated my way through nine exams – soon to be 12, hopefully! I’ve had opportunities that have challenged me and I’ve been consistently encouraged to achieve new things, and to take on more responsibility.” On a day-to-day level, Chanel assesses whether the financial statements of different companies are a true and fair reflection of their transactions and works with her clients to build strong relationships. She loves the variety of her role, but has found that other people’s perception of what she does, doesn’t always match up with the reality.

“Whenever I tell people I’m an accountant, the ruder ones audibly groan,” she explains. “The more polite ones try and make conversation, expecting boring tales of corrupted Excel files and broken calculators. Once I tell them about my experiences at KPMG, like how I’ve been bonding with paint-splattered partners at our department’s Corporate Responsibility event painting classrooms at a school for autistic children, suddenly, being an accountant doesn’t seem all too bad. Especially an accountant at KPMG.” Chanel’s found that the social side to life at KPMG is just as important as the thought-leading work she’s involved in. “In February, I was part of a team working in Dallas, Texas, for two weeks. As well as carrying out Audit work for our clients, we ate lots of delicious steak, watched the Super Bowl in a Texan bar, and went to a rodeo! We quickly became a close-knit team. We received a lot of support from KPMG managers in the UK too – it was an amazing experience.” To hear from more of our graduates across all departments, CLICK HERE To see all available and upcoming career opportunities with KPMG, CLICK HERE

At MyKindaFuture, we believe your degree does not define your career. We hear from Tim from HSBC who studied Chemistry but followed his interest into finance and banking and became a product manager at HSBC. Hear about his experience so far… Tim Lucas – Product Manager, Current Account (Overdrafts) “I joined HSBC in 2014 on the Executive Management Trainee programme after studying Chemistry at the University of Birmingham. I was always interested in finance/banking but was always put off by my absolute lack of knowledge about the financial industry. What stood out to me about HSBC was its global presence and the fact there was a real emphasis on employees’ personal values. When I went through the application process I was surprised that I was not really quizzed on my knowledge of banking of the financial sector. I remember telling my final interviewer that I was surprised by this and his response to this has stuck with me to this day. He said that “we can teach you about banking, but we can’t teach you your values and your values

are the most important thing here”, for me this sums up HSBCs approach to both recruitment and it’s everyday business. Arriving on my first day of placement in St. Albans I was so daunted, I felt lost walking through the door and meeting the team for the first time. Quickly I realised my apprehension was completely misplaced and I was given amazing support by the team and given lots of responsibility right from the first day. I was able to make my own mark on the branch and the business area. Using my experience in the front line I was able to apply this knowledge to a placement in head office looking after the overdraft business. Ultimately I obtained my first permanent role (and a promotion) in the same role

and now I manage UK personal overdrafts, a multi-million pound business in its own right. The contacts I have made throughout my time in Retail Banking & Wealth Management (RBWM) have enabled me to get up to speed with my role and hopefully my manager would tell you I am making a positive contribution to our customers and the business as a whole.”

Life as a Central Departments fast streamer Victoria Jones When you start a new job, you never know what to expect! Victoria shared her experience of joining the Civil Service and an inside scoop into the projects she has been working on… When I was told I was going on secondment to the Association of British Insurers to be a Pensions Policy Adviser I was a bit underwhelmed. Let’s be honest, it doesn’t sound particularly exciting, especially not when my colleagues were heading off to BAE, the Nudge Unit (Behavioural Insights Team) and WWF (The World Wide Fund for Nature). But after some encouraging words from my Cohort Leader, off I went to the world of insurance. I’m now halfway through my secondment posting and happy to admit that my first impression couldn’t have been more wrong. Whilst the ABI doesn’t necessarily have the same brand recognition as BAE or sound as mysterious as the Nudge Unit, it is a dynamic and effective organisation which works across a wide range of interesting policy areas. The ABI works to ensure the industry meets the highest standards and the voice of the UK insurance industry is heard.

although at the time, I never put much thought to where I might go.

Whilst studying for my degree in International History with Politics at the University of Leeds, I never thought I would end up working in pensions, or better still, actually enjoying it. When I left my job at the Department for International Development to join the Fast Stream as a Generalist, it was because I wanted to experience the variety of roles the Civil Service has to offer. How could I possibly know what I wanted to do in government if I didn’t know what I could do? As I had always planned on a Civil Service career, I was also interested in the opportunity to leave government on secondment and try something different;

For my next post I was relocated to Bristol as a Commercial Officer for Defence Equipment and Support (part of the MOD). At first, I was nervous about a role in procurement as I knew you needed profession specific knowledge to be effective in this area. However, my Manager was supportive and quickly brought me up to speed, and in a short space of time I was placing a contract worth £17 million. My current role at the ABI puts me at the heart of a policy area undergoing major changes, which will have a massive impact on the future of everyone in the UK. I have been given a high level of responsibility and

For my first Fast Stream post I was based in Falkirk (Scotland) at the Child Maintenance Group (a lesser known delivery arm of the DWP) as Communications Manager. It was a challenging role, but that meant that I learnt quickly and it helped me really get to grips with the challenges (or opportunities as my Area Head would say!) that those in frontline delivery roles face.

my colleagues value the insight I can provide into the ways of working in the Civil Service. I must admit, it is fun to be sat across from civil servants from HMT or DWP and think ‘I’m on the wrong side of the table!’ Discovering that the Director General of the ABI, Huw Evans, previously worked as a Special Adviser to Tony Blair, seemed like a learning opportunity that was too good to miss. I asked Huw if he would be willing to speak at (fund and host!) an event for the Fast Stream Learning and Development Committee, and, although my Manager confessed afterwards that he sent me in with a 30% chance of success, Huw agreed. In fact, Huw is an enthusiastic supporter of the Fast Stream who was only too happy to contribute to our development. The event proved overwhelmingly popular with fast streamers, tripling in its original size. At the event Huw shared his top tips for working with SpAds as well as a few stories from his time at the heart of government and I received lots of positive feedback on the high quality of the event.

Stress showing on your skin? Achieving celebrity skin advice from Deborah Mitchell one of the world’s leading estheticians Spots are associated with young skin, often blamed on an over production of oil due to your age, but what if the spots are due to an over production of oil because you’re stressed, and by the time the spots have gone the wrinkles have started to appear?! #NIGHTMARE. Young people are under more stress today, than ever before. Millennial’s are the first generation that have to live life under a social media microscope. And this involves working towards getting the best mark on your exams to get a great career, keeping up with your friends; usually late at night, and your family, having the perfect boyfriend/girlfriend and documenting it all online on social media to show everyone how in control you are and what a wonderful time your having. And you’re pioneering this unchartered path marvellously! I take my hat off to you, I really do. But what happens when that Snapchat filter lets you down, and you realise that, you, the subject of the photo, needs a little more me time? Stress is the greatest, slow-burning killer of great skin. But you’re trying your best, right? You’re keeping up with your studies, you’re going out with your friends, and you call your Mom at least once a week. So what if you forget to eat? Or take your make-up off before bed? The spots will go, right? When you’re stressed you release the adrenaline hormone cortisol, and this is a great evolutionary response that we humans developed. This magic hormone gives us

18

magic super powers to fight the lion or get the hell away as fast as we can! It’s called the Fight or Flight response, but you knew that, and it’s a good thing, as I said it gives us magic powers and it encourages our bodies to heal, if that pesky lion bit us… The thing is, we rarely bump into lions anymore, (unless of course you’re on a fabulous gap year in South Africa, changing the world) and we rarely just get up and run away, no matter how much we’d like to sometimes. So what happens to all this cortisol surging through our blood vessels? Not a lot, it stays there, and because we can’t fight or ‘flight’ we become nervous, over-reactive, tense. And this subsequently causes an over production of oil in the skin, thus causing spots. See where I’m going with this? Of course the spots will go, eventually, but what if you didn’t have to suffer them in the first place? I created Heaven Skincare to heal the skin using natural remedies from days gone by, but the healing properties remain the same. The biggest mistake people make with spotty skin is to try and remove the oil from the skin, thinking if we dry it out a bit my skin will get better… This is counter-productive because in response to removing the oil, the skin produces more oil. The body is in homeostasis, right? In perfect balance with all kinds of negative feedback systems, so how do we stop the spots?! We add more oil, more good, natural oils. I said the body was in homeostasis, right? So by adding

more oil we gently encourage the skins over production to cease. Start with the Hydro Cleansing Milk (from £10.00) which uses organic rosemary oil to remove dirt and debris from the skins surface, it contains jojoba oil, which has the most similar structure to oil naturally found in the epidermis, it contains lavender to soothe redness and tea tree oil to kill bacteria. Follow the cleanse with Peppermint Clarifying Hydrogel (from £10.00) which is a cooling and soothing gel, that contains peppermint oil to help balance the oil production in the skin, so where you’re dry more oil is encouraged, but where you’re oily the production is reduced. The moisturiser recommended is the Youthful Moisturiser (from £10.00), which contains organic frankincense oil to preserve your lovely youthful cells. The complexion is left bright, clear and dewy. Who needs a snapchat filter now?

Technology and Operations on Innovation Technology and Operations is a key component to Santander as it sits under every business area function and essentially helps the bank to run and work on a daily basis. It is also the core element driving innovation and constantly moving Santander forward towards the digital revolution. Since 2014, Santander have launched a new, easy to use website alongside the improved online banking with over 1.1 million mobile banking users. Santander have created 3 new apps for their customers: ‘Spendlytics’, ‘KiTTi’ and the ‘ISA App’. The ‘Spendlytics’ app analyses your spending and helps you to see where your money goes, for example, how much you spend on your supermarket shop or on petrol and can really help you

20

when you need to cut back on retail therapy! ‘KiTTi’ helps customers with saving or collecting a pot of money in a group, for example if you are saving up for a holiday or wanting to split the bill with friends. This is especially exciting as you don’t have to be a Santander customer to use it, it is free to download and it’s clear to see who has or hasn’t paid! The ‘ISA App’ gives you access to your ISA funds, includes an ISA calculator which calculates what you earn alongside a countdown clock to the end of the tax year and is free to download for anyone. Santander are looking to the future and evaluating new concepts to help us create even smarter banking and you could be part of Technology and Operations through our Graduate opportunities. Our

two-year graduate schemes are designed to give you all the practical skills and experience you need - over four six-month rotations, you’ll work on live projects while developing a broad understanding of our business. Some of last year’s graduates and interns were heavily involved in developing Apple Pay @ San UK, as well as our ‘Spendlytics’ app, making this your opportunity to have a real impact on the next big innovations in banking.

Chanel’s Story

Chanel says she’s found the support on offer to be excellent.

she does, doesn’t always match up with the reality.

“When I first started I was given lots of responsibility, but I was always supported by managers, my mentor and my team. The best advice I was given was ‘rule number one; ask questions.’ I’ve never felt lost in my role. I’ve used other graduates as a sounding board and because I’ve worked closely with them, I’ve built some great relationships.”

Especially an accountant at KPMG.”

Even though Chanel was confident that KPMG was the ideal place for her, she was still a little apprehensive on her first day.

“I’ve successfully navigated my way through nine exams – soon to be 12, hopefully! I’ve had opportunities that have challenged me and I’ve been consistently encouraged to achieve new things, and to take on more responsibility.”

“I felt a bit out of my depth – as though I was a soon-to-be-discovered fraud amongst the other 10 or so new starters. But I quickly realised that it was just nerves because everyone was having first day jitters. We were all quickly put at ease during the induction.”

It’s thanks to the support she’s had from her peers and her more experienced colleagues that Chanel’s confidence has grown and grown.

On a day-to-day level, Chanel assesses whether the financial statements of different companies are a true and fair reflection of their transactions and works with her clients to build strong relationships. She loves the variety of her role, but has found that other people’s perception of what

FIRM PROFILE

“When I was at university, KPMG was always my favourite of the Big Four firms,” she says. “I was confident that I’d thrive in the environment and felt well informed, as I’d spoken to lots of KPMG employees at different networking events. I liked the idea that I’d be able to add value to all sorts of different organisations, and especially the fact that I’d be working on real projects for real clients right from the start. I definitely made the right choice – I had high expectations and they’ve actually been exceeded. I’m making a difference to tech telecoms and media companies – whether they’re small firms or huge multinationals.”

KPMG

Even before Chanel had finished studying Economics with Central and East European Studies at Birmingham University, she felt sure that she wanted to embark on a career at KPMG...

Chanel’s found that the social side to life at KPMG is just as important as the thought-leading work she’s involved in. “In February, I was part of a team working in Dallas, Texas, for two weeks. As well as carrying out Audit work for our clients, we ate lots of delicious steak, watched the Super Bowl in a Texan bar, and went to a rodeo! We quickly became a close-knit team. We received a lot of support from KPMG managers in the UK too – it was an amazing experience.”

Thinking about what comes after University life?

Our Internship opportunities provide a really great snap shot into what it is like to work for Santander and dependent upon performance, also offers the chance to be given a place on the Graduate programme without having to go through the assessment process again. Not only does this relieve any pressure to complete interviews in the final year of your university life, it allows you to focus all of your efforts on obtaining the best results in your degree.

Our Internships last for 10 weeks over the summer and the feedback we have had from the latest Interns is that they were surprised as to how much they were able to learn about Santander in the time that they had in the business, how much responsibility they were given on projects and how many people they were able to meet and network with. The Internship has opened up many doors for the students helping them to understand what the world of work is all about but also giving them a flavour of what else was to come if they moved onto the Graduate programme and we’ve seen the highest numbers of Interns move onto our Graduate programmes this year, for this very reason. Should you choose to stay onto a Graduate programme with us, you will have a number of developmental opportunities as well as advice and guidance throughout the programmes from knowledgeable colleagues who know what you’re going through. You will have the chance to take part in our CSR project, supporting our charity of the year, which is a great opportunity to build a network of fellow graduates that will influence the rest of your career. By the time you’ve finished your programme, you’ll have earned an

industry-recognised qualification in your area – such as a CIOBS, Professional Banker Diploma, ACCA or CIMA.

FIRM PROFILE

It’s the time of year when most students start thinking about their next steps, whether that be another year of study, coming face to face with the world of work or embarking on an Intern/Graduate scheme. Currently we have both Graduate and Intern opportunities ranging across a number of business areas for those individuals who want to continue developing the skills they have learned during their studies and also be challenged through contributing to projects, such as around building new digital platforms, and creating new relationships.

P&G

Take the next step with Santander Early in Careers!

We have a number of opportunities available in different business areas as below:

• Risk • Internal Audit • Corporate & Commercial Banking and Global Corporate Banking • Marketing • UK Banking • Technology & Operations (Graduate and Intern) • Geoban (Graduate)
