WELCOME

from the team Welcome to the March edition of the MyKindaFuture Hired E-magazine! This month we are looking at careers in Technology and cover everything this sector has to offer. It’s been hard to try and get it all into one issue and cover everything these sectors have to offer, we have just scratched the surface with the technology industry growing faster than ever and new jobs being created every day! Although I am a marketing graduate without an in-depth knowledge of IT Systems, I am constantly learning how important understanding technology is to improve how MyKindaFuture work and engage with students. I have written about my experience with developing my knowledge of technology, in particular coding, on page 6. MyKindaFuture are always looking for new technology to help us and we have recently launched our brand new INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT to show you all of the great stuff we are up to (and how much fun we have in the office!) so check us out!

a great job, many of the students there were worried about securing a placement or job and asked me about my experiences! I was able to secure both my placement year and graduate job after I had finished my exams through applying to small businesses and SME’s. Unlike large companies operating large schemes for graduates who hire students months in advance, smaller organisations are more likely to advertise positions around a month in advance, giving you opportunity to finish your exams, take a break and then start looking for positions.

March for me always feels like a breath of fresh air after the dull months of January and February and Christmas being a distant memory! For students, it can be a particularly stressful time with the summer soon approaching and trying to secure a summer internship, placement year or graduate role!

However, many of you still have plenty of time to secure that job in time for the summer! If you are worried about the time it takes to apply for each job, set some initial time aside one morning to write out lots of example answers to many of the questions which regularly appear on application forms and based on competencies which many employers are looking for. So when you find a new job, you already have the basics to fill out the application form or cover letter and from there you are able to develop your answers to pick out your strengths which best fit that employer. Every application should be completely tailored to the company you are applying to, so spend your time reworking your examples not writing them from scratch each time.

At the beginning of March, I returned back to my university to give a talk to undergraduates on how they can boost their employability and get

You can also apply this concept to your CV! I always like to keep a copy of my ‘full CV’ on file which is a long document which outlines every bit

of experience, knowledge, skills and strength which I have. As we know, a CV should never be more than 2 pages long, so when applying for each role I can easily copy and paste from my full CV in a much smaller document which outlines the most appropriate experience and information for that employer, tailoring the version of my CV dependant on the job. By putting the time in to create your ‘full CV’ and example questions, it will make the process of applying for different roles much quicker and more efficient. I hope you enjoy this issue, it is packed with great advice and opportunities to help you on your journey to your dream career.

Happy Easter Everyone! Lucy Godwin National Societies Executive at MyKindaFuture

An Introduction into Careers in Technology The area of IT and Telecommunications is title which covers a massive range of careers and opportunities, encompassing all the ways of working with technology and sharing information. It is a very exciting time to be starting out in a career in technology, it is a massive part of our everyday life and as we continue to rely on it more and more, the opportunities for employment continue to grow with new positions being created constantly.

One of the great parts of working in this industry is the flexibility and creativity you can have, in many cases you will be part of creating something new, forcing you to be innovative in your solutions. With technology encompassing nearly every business, you will also have the opportunity to work in a range of different sectors and companies, from large multi nationals to helping small charities to develop a new website. It can be very easy to think of the big technology companies when thinking about a career in IT, however, there is a wide range of smaller companies specialising in areas such as software / app development, virus protection, gaming to name but a few! As we also highlight in this issue of the e-magazine, lots of IT opportunities are also available in many big employers. Read on throughout this issue to hear from graduates specialising in Technology with companies such as M&S, TUI, Lloyds Banking Group and Nestle. You may be reading this and thinking that a career in technology interests you, but you don’t study an IT degree! In the Technology industry, the demand for talent is always high

and firms are on the lookout for students who are enthusiastic and have a strong interest in computing, regardless of your degree. Whilst at university, you can prove this through joining a computing or STEM related society, attending employability events focused on IT (check out your Bright Futures society!), learning to code and build your own website. There are also many opportunities through university run workshops, or take a look at hackathons and similar events near you which will help you to learn or sharpen up your technical skills. Here are some top ways that you can make sure you bag a job in Technology: Communication Skills Aside from the obvious technical knowhow, one aspect of many technology jobs which is overlooked is the ability to clearly communicate. Whether you are proposing a new technology solution to a client or your company, helping to solve a problem or working closely with your team, the way that you communicate concepts and technical information is very important! Good communication is improved through practice over time so throw yourself into giving

presentations, working in teams and actively find opportunities to push yourself out of your comfort zone. Gaining Experience Like with any other career, having experience working within your chosen sector is very important. As working in technology could mean working in a wide range of companies, gaining work experience in various firms will also help you to find out which environment suits you best! Do you enjoy flexibility and independent working or do you thrive on being part of a team within a big firm? Throw yourself into as many opportunities to find out what works for you! What is happening in the sector? One of the easiest ways to show your enthusiasm and knowledge of the sector is keeping up to date with technology changes – there is a massive amount of blogs, websites, magazines and content online with the latest news in technology. Try to understand not only what’s new, but the impact this has on business to show your commercial awareness!

Accenture Technology Vision 2016

The Accenture Technology Vision identifies the top tech trends that will impact how large organisations operate and compete in the next three to five years. Now in its 10th year, this ground breaking report is based on extensive research and insights from luminaries and leaders and sponsored by Accenture’s Chief Technology Officer, Paul Daugherty. Here’s our five tech trends that will allow companies to win by putting People First: 1. Intelligent Automation—Powered by artificial intelligence, the next wave of solutions will weave systems, data and people together—creating solutions that fundamentally change the organisation, as well as what it does and how it does it.

2. Liquid Workforce—Companies need to do more than invest in the right technologies to keep pace in the digital era. They need to harness these technologies to enable the right people to do the right things in an adaptable, change-ready and responsive workforce.

5. Digital Trust—Businesses cannot share and use the data that underpins their operations without trust. The most advanced security systems today go well beyond establishing perimeter security and incorporate a powerful commitment to the highest ethical standards for data.

3. Platform Economy—Technology-enabled, platform-driven ecosystems are taking shape across industries. The next step is creating the adaptable, scalable and interconnected platform economy that underpins success in an ecosystem-based digital economy.

As these IT trends demonstrate, leveraging the power of a digital business is no longer simply about incorporating technology into the organisation. It’s about reinventing the organisation—and the culture within it—to drive innovation, to drive change, to drive the business into the next generation.

4. Predictable Disruption—Few businesses grasp how dramatic the changes arising from new platform-based ecosystems will be. Studying these trajectories will provide the fodder to anticipate how whole industries and economic segments will be redefined.

why should i learn how to code? Here at MyKindaFuture, we are always keen to find new ways that students can boost their employability! In this piece, we hear from our editor Lucy about her experience of coding and why you should learn too!

Code is a language in which websites, apps and software is written and it is no longer reserved for stereotypical ‘geeks’. Knowing how to code, even at a very basic level, is a fantastic skill for any career you may be pursuing but is especially key if you want to work with technology. Lucky for you, free coding workshops, online tutorials and support are rife with a shift over the last few years to encourage young people to learn how to code. I learnt to code in my final year of University, with a fantastic scheme called Code First: Girls which is a free, weekly workshop ran at universities across the country by an organisation called Entrepreneur First. By learning to code in a friendly environment, with other female students who are just starting out was a brilliant way to learn how to code, especially as we were able to ask each other with the problems we were having. The reason that Code First: Girls has also been successful is down to the empowerment it gives young

women in universities across the UK. Coding and technology is quite often seen as a man’s world, despite the world’s first computer programmer, Ada Lovelace, being a woman! Even with the recent shift in encouraging women to undertake careers in tech, only 17% of tech jobs in the UK are held by women! And this trend can be seen even more in younger people, with only 7% of students studying computer science at A Level being female. Whether you are a male or female, learning to code and understand how technology works is key to future careers. Technology controls a huge range of things from how we interact with our nearest and dearest right through to the UK and worldwide economy. When I decided to learn to code, I wanted to make sure I was one of those people who had the knowledge to control and create new technology which could one day shape the world around me. Even though my role at

MyKindaFuture does not involve coding, the experience has still helped me massively. Firstly, it was great thing to put on my CV and talk about in my interview! On top of my other extracurricular activities at university (including running a society which is another great thing to boost your employability!) it was an opportunity for me to show my wide range of skills and knowledge in areas outside of my degree. My coding experience has also been a fantastic help when working with our website developer, even though I have not got the knowledge to develop a complex website, I can begin to understand how the website is built and therefore the possibilities of what it could do! Understanding this has allowed me to work efficiency with our developer to make our website great for students.

writing a few simple commands can create a brand new thing before your eyes. There is a great amount of free resources and websites which are set up to help you start coding in under and hour, my personal favourite is Dash from General Assembly which gives you a very easy step by step modules to build different web pages and blogs! They also have a great Facebook group for others using Dash, meaning you can ask the community of code learners when things don’t go quite right!

Your first step to learn how to code is very easy! Why not just take 30 minutes to start off with the basics and you will be able to see how

If you are a female undergraduate, then check out Code First: Girls to see if there is a course coming up at your university!

At Lloyds Banking Group, we’re looking for summer interns who are passionate about digital innovation for our IT business Management graduate and summer internship programmes. You don’t necessarily need a technology degree. What matters is your enthusiasm for people management, project management and problem solving. And your desire to help Britain prosper. Like Jenna. Jenna is an Incident Management Analyst on our IT Business Management graduate programme, ensuring systems are up-to-speed to satisfy the needs of our customers.

Here is her story1. What did you study at University? I graduated from Edinburgh Napier University in July 2015 with a degree in Festival & Events Management 2. Tell us more about what you are doing at the moment? I am currently an Incident Management Analyst within the Batch Services team in Service Delivery. I monitor the progress of incidents, finding the right person to fix issues and making sure no issues go unattended. This involves speaking to a range of stakeholders and managing the performance of the team. I ensure that if systems break, they are fixed before they become a problem for our customers. I am also working on some communications projects. I help to maintain the quality of the performance of the team in general when dealing with incidents. 3. If you had to explain your team to a student, what would you say? Batch Services is about making sure all systems operating in the background

doing all the calculations on your bank account, your mortgage and so on, run properly and in the right order. 4. What have you done on the graduate program so far? I joined the Lloyds Banking Group IT graduate programme in September 2015 so I’m in my first placement. I’m based in Halifax, and I have only five weeks left here before I move on to my second placement in Edinburgh within Human Resources. So far, in my current team I’ve been fortunate enough to build great working relationships with a variety of people at Lloyds Banking Group. I’ve managed some process improvement projects, implemented new procedures and presented to my sub-teams up and down the UK.

6. What are some of the key skills you use every day? Tenacity, attention to detail, multitasking skills, presentation skills and my self-motivation. 7. Any advice for someone who is thinking about applying to the IT Business Management Programme? It’s not about who you are on paper, but who you are as a person. Make sure that this shines through on your application and show the positive traits you possess. Be friendly, be enthusiastic, and show a thirst for knowledge. Demonstrate your abilities. Lloyds Banking Group is all about diversity and inclusion: do not try to conform to who you ‘think’ you should be - instead just be yourself!

In the upcoming weeks I’ll be attending our graduate ‘Responsible Business Challenge’ event to discuss how we can raise money for charity, which I’m really looking forward to! 5. What do you enjoy about working at Lloyds Banking Group? I love the whole graduate community vibe and the support system that Lloyds Banking Group gives. Especially when it comes to placements, re-locating and studying for our Chartered Banker Diploma: you NEVER feel alone. I’ve met so many friends in my first six month, ones that I’ll definitely value for life, who have made the process of leaving university, leaving home and starting a new job not just easier, but amazing! I also enjoy the opportunity of being able to see different sides to the bank in my 6 month rotations over the two years and having the chance to live in different locations within the UK or abroad is great!

MORE THAN JUST A DOTCOM Everything today seems to be digital. But assume this trend is temporary and you’ll be making a mistake. A global multi-channel retailer, we’re using technology in new ways to improve how our customers experience our brand. For us, digital is very much the forefront of what we do.

Alongside our much-loved stores we’ve developed M&S.com – one of the biggest shop windows in retail. We now have over 7 million registered users and around 6.1 million weekly visitors. We’ve also developed ‘shop your way’ – designed to give our customers ultimate flexibility in how and where they shop. And that’s not all. We’re so much more than just a dotcom; digital touches every part of our business and we’re coming up with new ideas, new apps, all the time. But just what does it take to deliver a seamless digital experience? Apart from anything else it takes a group of talented graduates across ecommerce, software engineering and online experience creation. People like Megan for example. After studying Geography at Durham, she turned her back on a career in

professional services for a life riding the digital wave. A place on the M&S Digital graduate programme gave her a lot of new challenges in a short space of time. She says, “I spent my first couple of months in the dotcom logistics team – at Christmas. As you can imagine, this is peak period for us, so it was a bit of a baptism of fire but I learned so much in a very short space of time. Managing all of our international carriers was especially insightful.” For a more hands-on digital grounding, consider the M&S Digital – Business Placement. Perfect if you like putting your understanding of customers at the forefront of all your thinking and if you’re fascinated by the latest digital technologies.

A day in the life of an IT firm This month we have been speaking with students from across our Bright Futures network who have experience working in the IT and Telecommunication industries. Christie from Glasgow and Stacy from Leicester have both kindly shared their experiences below of working in these industries!

10

Christie McCormick: Glasgow Caledonian University

Stacy Odoguwu: De Montford University, Leicester

Christie is currently a penultimate year student studying IT Management at Glasgow Caledonian University. Christie currently works part-time for a software development company called Avarix who aim to provide cutting-edge and cost effective solutions for their clients. Avarix have also created their own product that is a wealth management system for stockbrokers.

Stacy is a recent graduate having achieved a Masters degree at De Montford University in Project Management. Stacy has experience of working for numerous companies within the IT industry having received a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Technology.

As a recently formed business, Christie finds it extremely interesting as not only is she able to gain an insight into an IT company, she is also able to find out about lots of information about SME’s such as how start-up companies gain funding for their business and get their products transformed from ideas into being sold on the market. Christie was attracted to working for an IT company as this was her opportunity to find out about the new technology that businesses are currently using. Christie wanted to work for an innovative organisation that is always keeping up to date on the newest, most cutting edge technology. The most exciting part of her job is learning about the new products that the company has to offer. As a business analyst, this is where she helps to write applications for funding where she tries to sell the product as best as she can. Christie believes the most difficult element of her job is attempting to identify competitors. Avarix is an SME that has created an innovative product so there are a limited number of companies that offer the same thing within our capabilities.

Stacy thoroughly enjoyed working in the IT and Telecommunications industries and described the opportunity as exciting. During her time in various roles she was able to learn a lot of new skills and gain vital experience that she believes has helped her to develop into who she is today! Stacy was attracted to working for an IT firm for a similar reason to Christie – due to the innovative nature of the industry! Stacy was drawn towards the fascinating industry that is constantly improving to help various individuals all over the world connect seamlessly! Stacy also enjoyed how adaptable the industry is – there are unlimited options for career progression within IT and Telecommunications whether you choose to be a programmer, researcher, marketer etc. IT and Telecommunications are both ever growing business sectors and both industries are continually developing which helps to set them apart. In many ways, IT and Telecommunications improve the lives of many people throughout the world but helping to save time for individuals and businesses!

We hope that the insights provided by both Christie and Stacy will inspire you to consider a career in the IT and Telecommunications industries. There is often a misconception that only students with a degree in IT or those who can code will succeed and this is most definitely not the case! IT companies differ from others as there is more room for innovation. New ideas are always welcomed in terms of products and processes. As you will see from the examples of Christie and Stacy – a career in IT and Telecommunications is fast-paced, exciting and full of challenges!

Where does IT fit into Santander and how can you be part of it?

When we think of IT or “Information Technology most of us would think about our computers or laptops or the equipment we use to communicate to others without needing to be in the same room as them. In an ever-evolving society, we are finding more and more ways of using technology to make our lives easier and Santander are amongst the first to pave the way in making banking Simple, Personal and Fair.

12

For Santander, IT is one of the three key areas, alongside Process & Change Management and Service Delivery that keeps the bank running as well as supporting its transformation initiatives, contributing towards investing in our people and making banking easier for our customers. The IT network in Santander runs across the whole business supporting each key area from Retail and Business Banking to Wealth Management and Insurance, and even Wholesale and Innovation. Without IT we could never have 1600 new active mobile users every day or 1 million payment transactions initiated online per week. IT sits inside our Technology and Operations business area which is the engine room that makes sure the bank stays functioning and that all processes run smoothly and correctly. Hand in hand with Service Delivery and Process & Change Management,

Santander are not only keen on maintaining the standards achieved, but also to push forward in innovation and find more ways to advance in the technological arena and move towards the digital revolution. Our Technology and Operations Intern Programme is currently still open for applications so if this is something you are interested in, we recommend you take a look! If you are interested in applying for any of our roles please visit the below website to make an application now! Please note – we are approaching the end of our recruitment cycle so be sure to make an application to be considered for our 2016 cohort! www.santanderearlyincareer.co.uk

Did you know..? The first hard drive was created by Seagate in 1979 and could store a total of 5Mb (Megabytes) – the equivalent of one song in mp3 format. Today TUI uses over 250Tb (Terrabytes) of storage, a whopping 52 million times more data than was stored on that first hard drive.

Great, now I’ve got your attention, isn’t IT cool? I’ve been at TUI just over 4 months now and something that I am reminded of every day is that IT underpins everything that happens here. From the interactive maps and software in our Holiday Design Stores; to the iPads that the Thomson cabin crew use to identify the first-time fliers; to developing an app for the Cruise ships that will be able to direct you on-board to the theatre/nearest bar/whatever floats your boat! I’m currently working in Service Transition, within IT Service Delivery. Every IT project that is going live has to go through our function before it is accepted into BAU (Business As Usual). I sit next to the Service Managers, who look after the day-to-day running of the booking systems to the post-travel programmes and everything in between. This is my first placement within the

scheme! Next, I am joining the Portfolio Management department to work as a BA (Business Analyst). This is a hop from the end of the project lifecycle to the beginning. The BA is the lynch-pin between the business and IT – gathering the requirements from the Business, firstly at a high level (functional level), to gain funding from the IT Governance Board, in order to proceed to a full project. Then the BA produces the lowlevel (detailed) requirements to enable the Project Managers to deliver exactly what the business needs. IT’s ‘customer’ is usually the other departments within TUI, whether it be Airline, Cruise or Finance, so it’s nice to be able to pop upstairs to these departments and understand what they need from us.

Solutions – building the technology to bring a project to life. That’s the great thing about our scheme – the two year programme consists of four 6-month placements within different IT functions which give us an insight into the entire project lifecycle and role of IT within the business. When the scheme is over, we will have the necessary understanding and experience to be able to go into a full-time position within the IT function that suits both us individually and TUI!

Jasmin Ballingall, TUI IT Graduate Scheme 2015

Next year, I will spend six months with the Information Security Team, seeking out vulnerabilities to keep the company safe and another half year within IT

Lucy

Lucy says she’s been able to achieve a huge amount over the three years that she’s been at KPMG. “I’ve been working in a variety of teams and sectors, giving clients insights and advice to help protect them from risk and improve the way they operate. I’ve learnt a lot about KPMG and the wider consultancy sector – as well as developing all sorts of business skills. I started off working in data analytics before moving on to Cyber and the McLaren Alliance team. Just recently I’ve moved to our Financial Services Technology Risk team. My day-to-day role varies – I could

be doing everything from having meetings with senior people at the clients’ offices through to working on bids and proposals at KPMG.” She’s particularly proud of the positive impact her work can have for clients. “We advise our clients on technology – what they have in place and any potential updates – and this advice can make a real difference to improving how they operate.” She also has internal clients. “I had the chance to work on a project that involved looking at our own cyber strategy. It meant working closely with the Head of Cyber Security within the defence sector. That kind of exposure was a great opportunity for me to develop new skills.”

Santander

Thinking about what comes after University life? Take the next step with Santander Early in Careers!

COMPANY PROFILE

It’s the time of year when most students start thinking about their next steps, whether that be another year of study, coming face to face with the world of work or embarking on an Intern/Graduate scheme. In the Early in Career team, we’re planning for a successful campaign to bring on board individuals to join our Santander family and build a successful long-term career with us. Currently we have both Graduate and Intern opportunities ranging across a number of business areas for those individuals who want to continue developing the skills they have learned during their studies and also be challenged through contributing to projects, such as around building new digital platforms, and creating new relationships. Our Internship opportunities provide a really great snap shot into what it is like to work for Santander and dependent upon performance, also offers the chance to be given a place on the Graduate programme without having to go through the

assessment process again. Not only does this relieve any pressure to complete interviews in the final year of your university life, it allows you to focus all of your efforts on obtaining the best results in your degree. Our Internships last for 10 weeks over the summer and the feedback we have had from the latest Interns is that they were surprised as to how much they were able to learn about Santander in the time that they had in the business, how much responsibility they were given on projects and how many people they were able to meet and network with. The Internship has opened up many doors for the students helping them to understand what the world of work is all about but also giving them a flavour of what else was to come if they moved onto the Graduate programme and we’ve seen the highest numbers of Interns move onto our Graduate programmes this year, for this very reason.

Should you choose to stay onto a Graduate programme with us, you will have a number of developmental opportunities as well as advice and guidance throughout the programmes from knowledgeable colleagues who know what you’re going through. You will have the chance to take part in our CSR project, supporting our charity of the year, which is a great opportunity to build a network of fellow graduates that will influence the rest of your career. By the time you’ve finished your programme, you’ll have earned an industry-recognised qualification in your area – such as a CIOBS, Professional Banker Diploma, ACCA or CIMA. We currently have the Intern Technology & Operations programme available to apply for and will be returning for more Graduate and Intern opportunities in September 2016.

About us:

Training A training contract at Ashurst will move your mind beyond technical knowledge of the law. Ultimately, we want to help you become a thought leader with a reputation for clear, perceptive and influential advice – a professional in whom governments and leading businesses the world over can place their trust.

This isn’t an easy route to take. You’ll need to become a shrewd negotiator, have an ability to read both balance sheets and behaviours, and become a commercial strategist with a deep understanding of specific industries. Our training contract will start you on that road. We will plan closely with you four seats of six months each, that will broaden your world view and hone your talents. At least one seat will be in a finance practice and we will also encourage you to join an overseas office or go on secondment to one of our most valued clients.

Who we’re looking for? We expect a lot of ourselves – and so, as you would expect, you will need to be comfortable with challenges and pressure. You should also be able to express yourself confidently on paper and out loud,

whether that’s among your team or in a client’s boardroom.

FIRM PROFILE

We take exactly the same approach with our people: we’re interested in understanding each other, finding new and better ways to bring out each individual’s talents, and simply enjoying the interaction with other high-calibre, down-toearth people. It’s a strong, shared culture that will enable you to apply your intellect, develop yourself and thrive as an international lawyer.

Ashurst

With 27 offices across the world’s leading financial and resource centres in Europe, AsiaPacific, Middle East and the USA, Ashurst offers the scale to attract global mandates. We operate at the cutting edge of the financial, resources and infrastructure, corporate and new economy markets, offering advice that’s as commercially astute as it is technically accurate in diverse areas of law including disputes, competition, M&A and finance. It’s that incisiveness that makes us different from other elite firms: we share our client’s ambitions and the depth of our insight allows us to cut to the heart of their issues with speed and clarity.

Alongside all the hard work, we also have fun. We’re incredibly proud of our culture: we thrive when we’re collaborating; we care about our standards of client service; we’re willing to explore ideas and be accountable for their success; and as people, we’re good company. We will expect all of that from you, too.

Next steps... The best way to learn what it’s really like to work at Ashurst is to meet us at an event or join one of our vacation schemes.
