There have been many different opportunities that have been happening throughout the term especially this week as it is National Careers week.

National Careers week will be a huge help for everyone at school especially if you don’t know what you want to do after you leave school, so have a read to find out the different opportunities that this amazing week will have.

I hope that you have had a fantastic term and that you are all getting ready for the start of you’re A-levels or GCSE’s or any other exams that you may have.

This year National Careers week is from the 3rd-7th March and it will be happening all over the country!

National Careers week is a celebration of careers guidance and free resources in schools, colleges and Universities across the country.

The aim of National Careers Week is to provide a direction for careers guidance activity at an important stage in the academic calendar to help support young people when they are leaving education. This could be when you finish School/ College or University you are given advice on what the different routes are available to you, whether it is to go to university or to take an apprenticeship, or when you finish university. National Careers week will help you to decide which career route to take and show you how to get a graduate job suitable that suits you!

National Careers week encourages educational institutes to bring students, local employers and advisors together by holding careers events and activities throughout the week. During the week it is up to all schools, academies and colleges to offer advice about their student’s careers.

Last year there were many events that happened such as daily drop-in workshops; careers fairs; employer visits; focus on subject relevant careers in lessons and showing different careers films.

National Careers week is perfect for a time where high youth and graduate unemployment has never been greater. It is the platform to advise and inspire the next generation as they enter into the world of work.

When you are in Sixth Form it seems that everyone is being directed to go to University and are not really told of the other opportunities that are available to students.

Well from my time here at Bright Futures I have learned there are plenty of other opportunities and they have various names, from School Leavers programmes, Advanced Apprenticeships, Higher Apprenticeships, the list goes on. The key point is that there are many great companies that offer these opportunities to students who either have decided to go straight into the work place rather than go to University (for any number of reasons).

These opportunities come with structured training programmes, many of which lead to professional qualifications and some will even put you through a degree part time (and without any debt for you).

Plus you will be building that all important practical experience; you are of course in paid employment and not running up any debt for your continued ‘education’.

You may think that I am persuading you to go down this route and not even think about University, well I am not. University opens up many opportunities for you, and if you do more than just your degree at University and develop yourself and your skills you will differentiate yourself when you go hunting for those graduate level jobs. But University is not for everyone and today more than ever there are great career opportunities for those who want to go straight into the world of work.

For example, last year there were 13,000 students that joined a Higher Apprenticeship scheme which is more than double from the previous year; and more and more companies are offering these type of opportunities. For example, Deloitte which is a huge accountancy firm opened up 30 Higher Apprenticeship opportunities in 2011 but this year they are looking to recruit nearly 100. The same for PWC another accountancy/consultancy firm, they have increased the number of opportunities by 76%.

So why are more and more students looking to be part of a School Leaver / Apprenticeship scheme?

This is because experts predict that students will come out of university with a debt of up to £50,000 and getting a job is tough if your CV looks the same as everyone else.

There are 4 different levels that Higher Apprenticeships can be taken at, these are levels 4 and 5 which is the equivalent of a Certificate in Higher Education & Higher National Diploma or a Foundation Degree. Level 6 is the same as an Undergraduate Degree and level 7 is equivalent to a Master’s

Degree. Some companies offer the opportunity to gain work experience for the first few years and then they can study a part- time degree or through distance learning.

The starting salary for opportunities such as these is usually between £14,000-16,000 and can be as high as £20,000. This of course increases when you have become more qualified within the company.

Going to University was the right decision for me, but I cannot ignore the fact that many of us at University worry a lot about whether we will get a job afterwards that’s why it seems to me that students who opt for School Leaver or the different Apprenticeship opportunities could well be giving themselves an ‘edge’ as when I leave University they will already have 3 years great work experience.

Are you starting to hear a lot more that dreaded question “What are you going to do when you leave School?”

It might be University or College, it might be into the World of Work or you might still not be sure…..

Whether you know what you want to do or are still deciding, there are things you can & should do…

And don’t worry if the thought of what to do after school completely scares you and you just don’t know where to start…

Don’t feel you should be able to find the answer to this big question now, and in one go, but to get you started we suggest 3 simple things you can do: 1. Talk to the Careers Advisor at your School as they will be able to help you better understand your options and help direct you. They can also help you understand your University or College choices, as well as different ways that you could make yourself more employable, what work experience would benefit you etc.

2. Get actively involved with your Bright Futures Society at school. By attending their events you can meet a range of employers and find out what is and what is not for you.

They will also run events which help you get clear on the skills employers seek and how you can develop them. These events delivered by employers will, whatever their content, also help you build your professional network and who knows one of them may end up being your future employer!

3. 3. Lastly you can use the internet to help you. There are many online quizzes & questionnaires that claim to help you find the career that is best for you. A particularly good one is www.allaboutcareers.com/career-test and it just might help point you in the right direction.

So if you are worried about what to do when you finished School don’t. But don’t wait for

lightning to strike…as we say at Bright Futures ‘it’s fine to not

know what you want to do for a career, but it’s

probably not a good idea to do nothing about it’.

So take some action and start

exploring possible careers.

Phoebe’s Pantry

This month it is Pancake Day on the 4th March (yes I know the day everyone has been waiting for, where it is acceptable to eat pancakes at anytime of the day).

I know a lot students opt out and buy the ready made mix that you can buy in the supermarkets because they don’t know how to make pancakes from scratch so here it is, the real recipe!

For the pancake mixture • 110g/4oz plain flour, sifted • Pinch of salt • 2 eggs • 200ml/7fl oz milk mixed with 75ml/3fl oz water • 50g/2oz butter

To serve • Caster sugar • Lemon juice • Lemon wedges or whatever you fancy

Preparation method

1. Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl with a sieve held high above the bowl so the flour gets an airing. Now make a well in the centre of the flour and break the eggs into it. Then begin whisking the eggs - any sort of whisk or even a fork will do - incorporating any bits of flour from around the edge of the bowl as you do so.

2. Next gradually add small quantities of the milk and water mixture, still whisking (don’t worry about any lumps as they will eventually disappear as you whisk). When all the liquid has been added, use a rubber spatula to scrape any elusive bits of flour from around the edge into the centre, then whisk once more until the batter is smooth, with the consistency of thin cream.

Now melt the 50g/2oz of butter in a pan. Spoon 2 tbsp of it into the batter and whisk it in, then pour the rest into a bowl and use it to lubricate the pan, using a wodge of kitchen paper to smear it round before you make each pancake.

3. Now get the pan really hot, then turn the heat down to medium and, to start with, do a test pancake to see if you’re using the correct amount of batter. I find 2 tbsp is about right for an 18cm/7in pan. It’s also helpful if you spoon the batter into a ladle so it can be poured into the hot pan in one go. As soon as the batter hits the hot pan, tip it around from side to side to get the base evenly coated with batter. It should take only half a minute or so to cook; you can lift the edge with a palette knife to see if it’s tinged gold as it should be. Flip the pancake over with a pan slice or palette knife - the other side will need a few seconds only - then simply slide it out of the pan onto a plate.

4. Stack the pancakes as you make them between sheets of greaseproof paper on a plate fitted over simmering water, to keep them warm while you make the rest.

5. To serve, sprinkle each pancake with freshly squeezed lemon juice and caster sugar, fold in half, then in half again to form triangles, or else simply roll them up. Serve sprinkled with a little more sugar and lemon juice and extra sections of lemon.

Nathan began his career in September 2009 after achieving A-levels in Maths, Physics and Chemistry from the Crypt School in Gloucester. His first year at GE was spent studying full-time at Gloucestershire College, but working week-long placements during academic holidays.

These placements provided theoretical, practical and procedural knowledge of engineering at GE. Throughout years 2 and 3, Nathan also continued to study at Gloucestershire College on day release, as well as completing two separate weeks of residential training, achieving an ILM Level 2 in Team Leading.

“What does it take to succeed in the business world?”

PwC are committed to providing young people with the best opportunities to learn, grow and excel. In line with this ambition they’re running a competition for Year 12 students, in partnership with Bright Futures, to see what skills students think are required to be successful in business and how such skills can and are being developed.

The selected winners from schools will be given a place on a half day Insight Event at PwC offices w/c 21st July 2014, in either: Reading • St Albans • Uxbridge Hull • Newcastle So for a chance to win simply answer the following question: “What skills do you think are needed for a career in business? And what activities can and do students undertake to develop these?”
