Bright Lights is a non-profit organization that takes learning beyond the classroom by providing youth with unique, motivating hands-on learning opportunities. For students who have completed K–8th grade. By expanding STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to include the letter ‘A’ for “art and design,” we are emphasizing the important inclusion of creative thinking, collaboration, experimentation and exploration into the equation. At Bright Lights, we strive to offer hands-on STEM and STEAM opportunities in almost all of our classes and recognize the significance of preparing students for future educational opportunities and careers.

• International classes offer American students a unique opportunity to interact with visiting Japanese students from Senshu Matsudo University Junior High School. • Mark your calendars for Thursday, June 21, for bowling and fun at Sun Valley Lanes (321 Victory Lane) provided by our Japanese friends. Bring a sack lunch to eat at Lux before heading to the bowling alley at 12:30 PM. Bus transportation will be provided. Students must wear socks in order to bowl. Please plan to pick up your student at 3:00 PM at Sun Valley Lanes. • No walk-in registrations will be accepted. • Credit card payments accepted online only. No credit card payments are accepted over the phone. • Class size is limited. • Registration remains open until one week before class is scheduled. After classes are closed for registration, a $25 fee will be assessed to revise your registration. • Additional fees apply to some classes. Check the course description. • Students are expected to be safe, respectful and responsible to be successful at Bright Lights. Parents may be contacted if students are unable to follow these expectations. Teachers and staff may redirect or remove the student from an activity. If the student continues to be disruptive or inappropriate, demonstrates physical aggression or presents a flight risk, the student will be dismissed from the program for the remainder of the summer without refund. • Students must be independent in toileting. • Families are responsible for hiring and paying for any individual classroom support personnel for their child. Individual support personnel must be post 9th grade, at least 4 years older than the child he/she is assisting, and may not be a family member. Assistants 19 and older will be subject to a background check. • Bright Lights makes every effort to accommodate student needs. If your child has medical, learning, physical, social, behavioral or other special needs (such as specialized equipment, additional adult support/supervision at school, learning/social/medical/behavioral accommodations, etc.), please contact Bright Lights at least 2 weeks before the end of the school year to allow for best planning and placement of your child. • Bright Lights reserves the right to modify classes/camps if needed, and/or to cancel due to low enrollment. Enrolled students will be given the option to choose a different class/camp or receive a refund.

Full payment must be made for any additional classes. • Applications are reviewed and awards are based on financial need on a first-come, first-served basis. You will be notified of the award amount. Your child’s spot in the camp/class is reserved during this process. • Before Care and Lunch Care costs are not eligible for scholarship.

Children of Military Deployed Parents Bright Lights honors the children who have fathers or mothers currently deployed outside the U.S. Each dependent child will receive a half-price discount on one Bright Lights class. Chess: Capture the King! q

Play the game of kings and queens! Learn all the rules, tactics and strategies necessary for basic play, in addition to chess notation, history and literature. Expand from the chessboard with variants such as bughouse, simultaneous chess and a game against the computer. End your training in a five-round class tournament. At the open house on Friday, prepare to demonstrate how each chess piece moves and attacks on a life-sized chessboard. Thespian skills optional as the queen attacks a pawn in this dramatic rendering. Pokemon® Art: Gotta Draw ‘em All q

Become a drawing master as you spend the week documenting Pokemon® in your own sketchbook. Learn how to draw your favorite Pokemon characters and even create a few of your own. Use colored pencils and paint to finish your character creations and your creative talents to come up with unique and powerful creatures ready for an epic battle!

Science of Superheroes Day Camp q

Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 140 Location: Pound Middle School Could Superman really fly? What is Spiderman’s spidey sense? How does Wonder Woman’s invisible jet work? Could Captain America really survive being frozen? Are superpowers fact or fiction? Gather evidence to answer these questions and more as we explore the Science of Superheroes through hands-on investigations, engineering challenges and lab exercises. Along the way we will explore science careers that are leading the way from turning fiction into fact. Coding with Scratch: Video Game Madness q

Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 126 Location: Holmes Elementary Students will learn how to use Scratch to code their own games. We will use variables and functions to make games that are appealing and fun to play. We’ll also learn about how technology affects our lives, and talk to a computer scientists to learn how they use coding in their jobs. If you don’t know Scratch, that’s ok! We will learn and have fun together.

Take a trip to Seussville for a fun-filled week in the world of children’s author, Dr. Seuss. While you travel, you will have a Wacky Wednesday kind of day filled with egg-citing science experiments. Oh, the tricks you will learn, like a balancing act just like the “Cat in the Hat.” Read books and discover Dr. Seuss’s hidden messages. Dabble in the dirt with the Lorax and create a marble run with recycled tubes! Will you have fun here on a summer’s day? Try it, and you may, I say. Follow the turtle and tortoise tracks as you discover the differences between these two reptiles. Learn about their amazing life cycles and make your own special turtle shells to wear during the week. Complete fun projects that may include egg carton turtles, hand-traced tortoises and tissue paper pom-pom turtles. On Thursday, parents will drop off and pick up at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo for a behind-the-scenes view of the turtle and tortoise exhibit. Grades Completed: K–2 Class #: 106 Location: Holmes Elementary Follow along with Dorothy as you explore the magical world of munchkins and “the merry, merry land of Oz.” The familiar characters from “The Wizard of Oz” will take you on a variety of learning adventures in all your favorite subjects—music, science, art, math and reading. Frolic and dance down the yellow brick road, learn sign language to “Over the Rainbow” and many more fun projects. Get to know these tuxedoed birds from the southern hemisphere through a variety of projects and activities that combine science, art and fun. Learn about the kinds of penguins and how big they are compared to humans. Discover how penguins survive in extremely cold weather, as well as how penguins are affected by oil spills. Activities may include making blubber gloves and learning about insulation, designing your own flag for Antarctica, writing a penguin poem and enjoying Arcticinspired snacks. On Thursday, parents will drop off and pick up at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo for a trip to the Humboldt Penguin Habitat. Grades Completed: K–2 Class #: 110 Location: Harris Academy of the Arts Fee: $25 Materials Immerse yourself in a camp that teaches you music skills including keyboard playing, singing, note reading, harmony, rhythm, ear-training, and composition. Piano Playground offers a fun, positive, and lively classroom setting where you have the freedom to love and appreciate music while developing fundamental musical skills. At the end of the camp, you will perform a prepared piece of music for family and friends. No piano experience needed, beginners are welcome! Grades Completed: 1–2 Class #: 112 Location: Holmes Elementary Travel back in time with Jack and Annie from the Magic Tree House series. In this class, travel to Egypt in “Mummies in the Morning” where you will wrap your very own mummies, and then hunt for treasure with “Pirates Past Noon.” During your time with the “Knights at Dawn,” design shields and meet a friendly dragon! We will travel to Prehistoric times and meet up with some friendly (and not so friendly) dinosaurs! Join us for a grand adventure! If you have not read Magic Tree House books, that’s OK; we will read them together. On Friday, share your adventures with family and friends. (See class #602 for different adventures.) Eye on the Sky: Weather Watchers q

Grades Completed: 2–3 Class #: 114 Location: Holmes Elementary Are you curious about natural disasters? Do you keep an “eye on the sky” for weather changes? Join our meteorology team and make an anemometer, rain gauge and wind sock for your own weather station. Measure daily weather changes and discuss how meteorologists observe and forecast the weather. Learn about the water cycle, make clouds in a jar and a tornado in a bottle. The weather’s always changing so join us as we learn more about it. Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 128 Location: Makit Takit: Lincoln’s Craft Studio Fee: $20 Materials This class is also offered during Week 5 as class #822. Spend the week with us at Makit Takit as we explore the messiest of crafts. We’ll be making several different kinds of slime, splatter painting, and learning how to do pour paintings. We’ll also spend some time making prints using gel plates and turning those prints into journals we’ll use as we explore a wide variety of mixed media techniques. We can’t forget our spa day, either! We’ll be making sugar scrubs and bath bombs to help us clean up after a week of messy making. Taught by Christy Nelson, owner of Makit Takit: Lincoln’s Craft Studio

New Heights: Rock Climbing q

Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 130 Location: Outdoor Adventures Center at UNL Fee: $20 Facilities Experience the rush of rock climbing! Connect with fellow students while you learn the basic technical skills required to get you climbing, including how to put on a harness and tie in the climbing rope. Problem solve as you scale vertical walls, find the right body positions and learn a little more about yourself along the way. Come see what climbing can offer beyond the adrenaline rush. Belay on! Design, build and program robots using the most advanced and newest LEGO® robotics technology—the powerful MINDSTORMS® EV3. Work as a team to complete real-world engineering and computer science challenges as you build and command robots that walk, talk, think and do anything you can imagine. With your ideas and the latest LEGO operating system and sensors, there are no limits to what you can do. Level 1—Builder: Entry level, limited or no experience with programming. Objectives are basic programming and robot movement. Level 2—Explorer: Completed at least 1 class at Level 1 and/or experience through another program. Objectives are sensors, loops and switches. This class covers five time periods in American history. Experience life in Colonial America with Felicity, Civil War Philadelphia with Addy, as a new immigrant to New York City with Rebecca, the Great Depression with Kit and America during World War II with Molly. Do you feel the ground shaking? Oh no, it’s an EARTHQUAKE! This is one of many topics that will be explored as we swirl like a tornado into learning about natural disasters. These might include a gelatin and marshmallow earthquake, a chocolatey mudslide, or an icy blizzard. Investigate where disasters happen across the United States and research how they occur. Guitar Discovery is for the beginner who has no experience at all with the guitar, or the person who has some rough basic guitar skills. If you want to learn how to play guitar (notes, riffs, chords, songs) this class is a great introduction. Small groups each work with an instructor, which means a lot of fun and learning can take place. You’ll be loaned an electric guitar by Dietze Music for the class, which you can take home each night to practice. You’ll receive a packet of information with songs, riffs, exercises and notes that you’ll keep and be able to learn from for years to come. If you’re willing to practice, we’ll show you the way forward to rocking the guitar! Grades Completed: 4–6 Class #: 830 Location: Holmes Lake Park Fee: $20 Facilities Build your skills and open the door to become a lifelong lover of aquatic paddle sports. Learn how to control a kayak and then further develop your skills and comfort in the boat by playing games. Discover how to paddle when conditions are not always favorable, and take a turn at maneuvering canoes and stand up paddle boards. On Monday the class will take place in the East High School pool to help you become comfortable with kayaks and to introduce general paddle skills. Tuesday through Friday, classes will be at Holmes Lake to practice with the added challenge of wind and waves. Please note: This is a water sport. Students should be comfortable in and around water. Life jackets and all equipment will be provided. Students are required to wear a properly fitted life jacket during class. Bring a towel, wear shoes that can get wet or sandals with straps, and wear clothing you would be comfortable swimming in. Have you ever wanted to make your own fashion statement by sewing unique creations with a sewing machine? Learn basic hand stitching and the use of a sewing machine along with how to pin and cut out a pattern. Create your own bookmark or bracelet, headbands, personalized pillowcase and more. Receive your own personal sewing kit to use and take home. On Friday, these projects will be “all sewn up” for an open house! Beginning and experienced students are welcome. q Guitar Discovery

Grades Completed: 4–8 Class #: 828 Location: Holmes Elementary This class is also offered during Week 4 as class #630. Guitar Discovery is for the beginner who has no experience at all with the guitar, or the person who has some rough basic guitar skills. If you want to learn how to play guitar (notes, riffs, chords, songs) this class is a great introduction. Small groups each work with an instructor, which means a lot of fun and learning can take place. You’ll be loaned an electric guitar by Dietze Music for the class, which you can take home each night to practice. You’ll receive a packet of information with songs, riffs, exercises and notes that you’ll keep and be able to learn from for years to come. If you’re willing to practice, we’ll show you the way forward to rocking the guitar! On Thursday, parents will drop off and pick up their students at Dietze Music Briarhurst (S. 48th & Hwy 2) for a class that will include a tour of the music store and instrument repair shop, plus regular small group learning and fun. Grades Completed: 5–7 Class #: 836 Location: Holmes Elementary Spend a week exploring coding and learning algorithms, binary code, functions and digital citizenship. We will do a number of activities plugged and unplugged as we problem solve, create and build games. Work independently and in small groups during the week on coding lessons. Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 818 Location: Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center Fee: $18 Facilities An all-around outdoor skills class with archery, slingshots, tomahawks, atlatl, crossbows and more. Enjoy a week with the Outdoor Education Center staff exploring and challenging yourself in a variety of outdoor skills with an emphasis on safety. Become an outdoor skill scientist as you discover the physics of the arrow hitting the bullseye, how energy will heat a Dutch Oven treat, and test gravity from a projectile released from your slingshot. Each day participate in exciting range activities that develop concentration and coordination as you work to be the one selected for “Range Commander” status: Will you be the one? Visit the ocean habitat to learn about creatures that live in this environment. Check out the sand and ocean waves. Get to know the fish, whales, dolphins and sea creatures that swim and survive in these waters - but watch out for sharks! Perform scientific inquiries about water and sand. You must be brave and ready to encounter many creatures like the ten-legged Sidewinders, the furry Fluke, and the friendly Whiffle Bird. Using the story, “The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles,” written by Julie Andrews, you will create art that represents the many characters and themes found in this extremely descriptive book. q Rocket Blast

In this class, we will build a modular rocket and revise it three times in three unique configurations. As we experiment with different rocket designs we will learn how they are affected by Newton’s Laws, aerodynamics, gravity, stability, and other factors. This class is great for both first-time rocket builders and experienced builders. First-time builders will learn how to measure, cut, glue, align and troubleshoot when building model rockets. Experienced builders will gain the skills they need to engineer their own unique rocket designs. Other activities may include designing paper airplanes, experimenting with baking soda and vinegar rockets, and Skyping with a representative from NASA! q Genetic Engineering

Grades Completed: 6–8 Class #: 928 Location: Holmes Elementary Discover how genetic engineering is a common and essential practice in biotechnology and how scientists are using genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In our classroom lab, you will purify plasmids and inoculate bacterial cultures to create glowing bacteria (a genetically modified organism). In addition, you will also have an opportunity to bring the abstract concept of DNA into a concrete visual by isolating and storing your DNA in a unique necklace.
