Bright Lights is a non-profit organization that takes learning beyond the classroom by providing youth with unique, motivating hands-on learning opportunities. For students who have completed K–8th grade. By expanding STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to include the letter ‘A’ for “art and design,” we are emphasizing the important inclusion of creative thinking, collaboration, experimentation and exploration into the equation. At Bright Lights, we strive to offer hands-on STEM and STEAM opportunities in almost all of our classes and recognize the significance of preparing students for future educational opportunities and careers.

• Each student is eligible for ONE partial scholarship for either a full-day camp or a half-day class. Full payment must be made for any additional classes. • Applications are reviewed and awards are based on financial need on a first-come, first-served basis. You will be notified of the award amount. Your child’s spot in the camp/class is reserved during this process. • Before Care and Lunch Care costs are not eligible for scholarship.

On the final day during the last 30 minutes of each class or day camp, parents, grandparents and friends are invited to join their student’s class or camp to share some of their Bright Lights experiences from the week.

This class covers time periods in American history of different American Girls including Felicity, Addy, Rebecca, Kit, Molly, Kaya, Josefina, Kirsten, Samantha and Julie. If you like to learn new hobbies this is just the class for you. We will enjoy sewing, latch hook rug making, Tommy Walkers and writing with a quill pen. Each time period will introduce you to the crafts, food and games authentic to that time. You’re welcome to bring your American Girl doll with you! Take a trip to Seussville for a fun-filled week in the world of children’s author Dr. Seuss. While you travel, you will have a Wacky Wednesday kind of day filled with egg-citing science experiments. Oh, the tricks you will learn, like a balancing act just like the “Cat in the Hat.” Read books and discover Dr. Seuss’s hidden messages. Each day update your Time Travel Logs to remember your travels. Play pioneer games, design passenger boats and perform anti-gravity experiments. Test your cake decorating skills by creating a work of edible art. Gather inspiration for your cupcake creations as you learn about different holiday celebrations. Spend the week with us at Makit Takit as we explore the messiest of crafts. We’ll be making several different kinds of slime, splatter painting and learning how to do pour paintings. We’ll also spend some time making prints using gel plates and turning those prints into journals. We can’t forget our spa day either! Use creative materials such as shrink plastic, bottle caps, metal stamps and beads to create necklaces, bracelets, bookmarks, earrings and much more. Students will create 10–15 different projects that they will take home at the end of the week! Guest designers will share their work and help students learn what it is like to start a business. Students will also learn merchandising skills in order to create a display for the week’s projects. You will also discover more about the use of cryptography in agencies like the CIA and other types of secret communication like Morse and Binary Code. q Paddle Sports: Hit the Water

Build your skills and open the door to become a lifelong lover of aquatic paddle sports. Learn how to control a kayak and then further develop your skills and comfort in the boat by playing games. Discover how to paddle when conditions are not always favorable, and take a turn at maneuvering canoes and stand up paddle boards. On Monday the class will take place in the East High School pool to help you become comfortable with kayaks and to introduce general paddle skills. Tuesday through Friday, classes will be at Holmes Lake to practice with the added challenge of wind and waves. In case of inclement weather, class will be held at the Lincoln East High School pool. Please note: This is a water sport. Students should be comfortable in and around water. Life jackets and all equipment will be provided. Students are required to wear a properly fitted life jacket during class. Bring a towel, wear shoes that can get wet or sandals with straps, and wear clothing you would be comfortable swimming in. Grades Completed: 4–6 Class #: 138 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $20 Materials If you’ve been dreaming of playing ukulele for weeks, months or years, this class takes you from no ukulele skills to playing melodies and chords after one week. Life after “Uke Can Do It” includes your own ukulele to keep, the necessary skills to maintain your instrument, the knowledge of how to play several songs in a variety of styles, and the know-how to learn new songs that interest your unique musical taste. Students will start with getting all of their essentials at Diagon Alley. They will then participate in herbology, astronomy, care of magical creatures and so many more wizarding classes. Students will take part in a Quidditch match and a game of wizarding chess. They will learn to make several delicious wizarding snacks and we will end our week with a Holidays at Hogwarts celebration highlighting all the fun of a wizarding winter! q Robotics: LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 Day Camp, Levels 2 & 3
Grades Completed: 4–7 Class #: 302 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $5 Materials Design, build and program robots using the most advanced and newest LEGO® robotics technology—the powerful MINDSTORMS® EV3. Work as a team to complete real-world engineering and computer science challenges as you build and command robots that walk, talk, think and do anything you can imagine. With your ideas and the latest LEGO operating system and sensors, there are no limits to what you can do. Level 2—Explorer: Completed at least one class at Level 1 and/or experience through another program. Objectives are sensors, loops and switches. Level 3—Engineer: Completed at least one class of Level 2 or previous experience with sensors, loops and switches. q Exploring Natural Disasters

Do you feel the ground shaking? Oh no, it’s an EARTHQUAKE! This is one of many topics that will be explored as we swirl like a tornado into learning about natural disasters. As you learn how these disasters can occur, you will create different types of disasters using food experiments. These might include a gelatin and marshmallow earthquake, a chocolatey mudslide or an icy blizzard. Investigate where disasters happen across the United States and research how they occur. q Amazing Race Challenges
Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 818 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $8 Materials Explore the world with fellow adventurers as you conquer roadblocks and detours. Search for the daily team challenge envelope containing creative games and crafts that will test your abilities in science, math and writing. Celebrate your teamwork by creating a flag and proudly wearing your team colors. Finish off the week with a scavenger hunt that will determine the Amazing Race Champions! q Dinosaur Detectives
Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 820 Location: Holmes Elementary Test your paleontology skills as you dig deeper into your dinosaur knowledge to work with fossils and explore the biology and science of dinosaur history. We will learn how dinosaurs are named, identify dinosaur anatomy and explore online resources of the American Museum of Natural History to help us get “up close and personal” with these amazing creatures. Learn how to be a critical thinker as we dig up and fact-check common misconceptions about dinosaurs. Taught by Madelyn McGowan, Moore Middle School Teacher
q Use the Force: The Physics of Motion
Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 822 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $18 Field Trip Investigate the forces behind movement by looking at potential and kinetic energy. May the force be with you as you drop eggs into a glass of water. Investigate Newton’s three laws of motion with exciting hands-on activities, then apply these laws to sound, light and magnetism. On Thursday, parents will drop off and pick up at Lincoln Laser Tag for behind the scenes research on lasers, as well as a game or two of laser tag.

Grades Completed: 4–7 Class #: 824 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $5 Materials Design, build and program robots using the most advanced and newest LEGO® robotics technology—the powerful MINDSTORMS®EV3. Work as a team to complete real-world engineering and computer science challenges as you build and command robots that walk, talk, think and do anything you can imagine. With your ideas and the latest LEGO® operating system and sensors, there are no limits to what you can do. Level 2—Explorer: Completed at least one class at Level 1 and/or experience through another program. Objectives are sensors, loops and switches. Level 3—Engineer: Completed at least one class of Level 2 and/or previous experience with sensors, loops and switches. Grades Completed: 6–8 Class #: 826 Location: Lincoln High School Discover how genetic engineering is a common and essential practice in biotechnology and how scientists are using genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In our classroom lab you will purify plasmids and inoculate bacterial cultures to create glowing bacteria (a genetically modified organism). In addition, you will also have an opportunity to bring the abstract concept of DNA into a concrete visual by isolating and storing your DNA in a unique necklace. Grades Completed: 6–8 Class #: 828 Location: Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center Fee: $18 Facilities Become the next Archery Superhero and discover the physics of energy conversion, test how three types of bows store potential energy and investigate why superheroes use different bows for different scenarios. This all-around outdoor skills class features archery, slingshots, tomahawk and atlat, and will take your skills to the next level. Enjoy a week with the Outdoor Education Center staff exploring and challenging yourself with a variety of outdoor skills. Focus on the physics of archery each day by participating in exciting range activities that develop proper shooting technique in an environment that fosters self-confidence, focus and team building skills.
