The party is over! EXCLUSIVE by Frank Le Duc
An inquiry into party houses has been set up by Brighton and Hove City Council after complaints about noise and anti-social behaviour. The inquiry will also look at whether party houses - used for stag and hen parties - compete fairly with hotels and local bedand-breakfast accommodation. The councillor heading the scrutiny panel that will tackle the issue also wants to know whether the properties are registered as homes or business premises - and whether business rates are being paid. One of the main provders in the market said that stags and hens were worth millions of pounds to the local economy. It said that the problems were down to independent groups organising parties by themselves rather than going through a responsible operator. The cross-party scrutiny panel, set up by the city council, will comprise three councillors and
be chaired by Geoffrey Bowden, a Green member who also runs his own business. The other members are Labour councillor Alan Robins and Conservative Jayne Bennett. Councillor Bowden said: “The Queen’s Park Local Action Team identified this as a particular problem but I know it extends across the city. “Party houses are short-term holiday lets typically catering for stag and hen parties. “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service estimate that there are some 300 party houses in the city. “While it is appreciated that these operations may have an economic benefit for the city, they also give rise to a considerable number of noise nuisance and anti-social behaviour complaints, particularly in residential areas. “I hope this scrutiny will be able to put forward recommendations that can tackle the negative impacts while promoting a gold
standard that could be adopted by responsible operators. “The panel will wish to hear from as wide a range of individuals and organisations as possible, including residents affected by party houses, operators, planning officers, licensing, environmental health, the blue light services and hoteliers. “Some of these have expressed concerns that there is not a level playing field in terms of regulation.” Keith White, the head of marketing at Hen Heaven and the Stag Company, said: “Hen Heaven and the Stag Company account for £2.3 million of the £4.5 million that the stag and hen industry inject into the night-time economy each year for Brighton. “Hen and stag groups contribute hugely to local tourism. Inquiry into ‘noisy’ party houses Our big fat Brighton weekend:
How 20 ‘stags’ found the perfect getaway Greg Hadfield Editorial Director
> Continued from page 1 of new visitors to the city which results in visitors coming back with family and friends. “I believe the reputation of hens and stag dos lies with the number of independent groups that visit the city. “Hen Heaven and the Stag Company sell highly organised packages which include hotel accommodation with fun day and night-time activities enabling groups to go to hen and stagfriendly venues. “The hotels, activities and venues that we sell are situated
in one part of the city therefore noise can be controlled and restricted from local residents. “By providing packages with fun day-time activities, it encourages groups to stay out of the pub and limits anti-social behaviour. “Hen Heaven and the Stag Company do not currently offer ‘party houses’ in Brighton and would take into account their location etc before taking any on board so that local residents are happy as well as our customers.” Frank le Duc is founder and editor of Brighton and Hove News. It took only a few hours for the My Big Fat Brighton Weekend website to meet my requirements. A late-night email request by the Brighton & Hove Independent produced immediate results: somewhere for 20 people seeking “cheap as chips” accommodation for a three-night stay in Brighton in November. Beatnik Stables! For only £133 per person (assuming all 20 stayed and paid). In other words, a total charge of £2,660. For what turned out to be a
property in Park Crescent Place (near The Level), which was put up for sale recently - when it was described as a threebedroom home - at an asking peice of £500,000. A quick Google search showed the property was also on offer from Crown Gardens Ltd: “Large loft-style house with lots of character, ideal for groups of up to 21 people. With 3 large bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and free on-street parking!” For groups of over 15, an additional double sofa was promised. More searching revealed Beatnik Stables is a sister property to Beatnik Central (sleeps 30), in Sillwood Street, and Beatnik Mews (sleeps 24), in Brunswick Street West.

Survey: Bus passengers express satisfaction Overall satisfaction among passengers with Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach company has increased. The national Passenger Focus Bus Passenger Survey, an independent study, shows 91% were either “very satisfied” or “fairly satisfied” with their bus travel. The figure is up by 2% on last year. Waiting-time satisfaction rose to 80%, a rise of 2% from last year. The survey showed 92% of passengers found it easier to board buses, with an increase of 6% - to 94% - for drivers stopping closer to the kerb; 71% were satisfied with their welcome from our drivers and 75% with “helpfulness and attitude”. Satisfaction with smooth driving and the safety of the driving has risen to 76% and 88%, respectively. Martin Harris, the bus company’s managing director said: “These improving results are a credit to all colleagues at Brighton & Hove, clearly pointing to increased passenger satisfaction levels in key areas such as punctuality
and driver awareness. “We have been investing heavily in creating an environmentally-friendly fleet, and creating new products and offers for our customers with smartcards and Mtickets. These results are being examined in detail to identify further opportunities for improvement for our customers.” Passenger Focus consult more than 20,000 passengers a year to produce the Bus Passenger Survey. It measures passengers’ satisfaction with their local bus service for a representative sample of journeys. Passengers rate their satisfaction with a wide range of aspects of their bus journey, including the bus stop, waiting for the bus, on the bus, the outside of the bus, and the bus driver - as well as their overall satisfaction with that bus journey and their rating of value for money. Passengers are asked to rate all aspects of their actual journey experience covering key areas such as planning, information, fares, helpfulness
Deadline for school places Parents have less than a week left to apply for a secondary school place in Brighton. The deadline for places next September at 10 city schools is Thursday (October 31). Applications can be made using the council’s website:www.brighton-hove. gov.uk/schooladmissions. Councillor Sue Shanks, chair of the children and young people committee, said: “Applying on time is vital. “Every year there are some people who are not offered a place at any of their preferred schools simply because they missed the deadline.” A council spokesperson said: “Over the past five years, everyone who has included their catchment area school or schools in their preference list has been offered either a school in their catchment area or a higher preference.” State secondary schools include two academies and a free school, as well as a Catholic secondary school.

Thousands benefit from ethical credit Jason Kitcat
I was delighted to become East Sussex Credit Union’s first online customer, using a new online system that was developed with a £10,000 investment by the council. Together, more than 4,000 people in Brighton and Hove, and across East Sussex, are saving more than £1.5 million with the credit union. This new online system for the credit union means these customers can now manage their savings or borrowing account online as well as through more traditional methods. The credit union is a local, notfor-profit cooperative that has been running in the city since 2004. It provides secure savings accounts and affordable lending to local residents. Its ethical

Now is the only moment that exists Gill Hasson
Mindfulness - the art of living in the moment - is fast becoming one of the most popular techniques for achieving focus, increasing performance, and heightening your satisfaction with life. GILL HASSON, who lives in Brighton, is author of a best-selling book on the subject. Here, she maps out practical steps to help you let go of negative mindsets, clear your mind of distractions and stop ruminating about the past or worrying about the future. People often tell me they have tried mindfulness and meditation, but they say they really struggle with being able to clear their mind in order to go off into an altered state in an attempt to get to a better place. But mindfulness does not have to involve complex meditation routines. Mindfulness does not have to be about having an empty mind or suppressing thoughts and feelings; it does not require years of practice, sitting in the lotus position in a flowing white robe on a beautiful beach. There are two ways of practising mindfulness; the formal way and the informal way. Formal mindfulness is probably better known as meditation. It involves following established practices, taking time out of your day to be still and silent, to focus on your breath, to be aware of sounds, senses, thoughts and feelings. This works for some people. Informal mindfulness requires no conventions. It simply means bringing mindful awareness to everyday life, to daily activities such as eating, walking, driving and housework. Informal mindfulness is also part of your interactions with other people - at work, at home and in your social life. My book is concerned with informal mindfulness. It is about mindfulness without meditation. How does that work? Well, it’s helpful first to understand something about how your mind actually works. Your mind is able to think back and reflect on past events and experiences. Your mind can also think about the future; it can plan ahead. Of course, your mind can wander to good things. You can remember
good times and anticipate forthcoming events. But this ability to think back to the past and forward to the future is not always an unmitigated blessing. Too often, life is racing by. There’s no time to experience what is happening now, because you are busy thinking about what needs doing tomorrow or you are distracted by thoughts about what did or didn’t happen yesterday. And all the time your mind is chattering with commentary or judgment. Other times you can get stuck in the past, going back over and over events or paralysed by worries about the future. At its most extreme, worrying about the future can lead to anxiety disorders. Dwelling on the past can lead to depression. Feeling overwhelmed by the past or the future takes us away from living now, in the present. Too often, we let the present slip away. It is easy to waste “now” time, missing what is happening in the only moment that really exists. When you are at work, for example, you are thinking about being on holiday; on holiday, you are worrying about the work piling up on your desk. Nowadays, to make matters worse, you can take your phone and computer on holiday with you - so that wherever you go, you are never actually there! Computers, smartphones, MP3 players. There are plenty of ways that modern technology can make you lose touch with what is happening and where you are. Right now. Mindfulness enables you to experience and appreciate your life instead of rushing though it, constantly trying to be somewhere else. Mindfulness is a way of living your life so that you are in the present moment more often. It involves bringing your awareness back from the future or the past and into the present moment. You are not trying to get to a better place or to become a better person. You are already there. My book is in two parts: the first part helps you to understand mindfulness, what it involves, and how you can learn to be more mindful. In the second part, I examine specific situations where being mindful can really help you. You will learn how being mindful can help you to be less swept away by thoughts and behaviour that lead to stress, self-doubt, depression and anxiety. You will

see how to apply mindfulness in relationships with other people and learn how techniques can help with personal development. You will notice that the same principles arise throughout: acknowledge and accept; focus and engage; let go and begin
again. Each time you apply these principles, each time you approach a situation with mindfulness, you are learning how to relate more directly to your life. Mindfulness by Gill Hasson is published by Capstone, price £10.99

With just over 18 months to the next city council elections – to be held on May 7, 2015 - a ComRes opinion poll for BBC South East has cast light on a sharp midterm fall in support for the Green Party. The telephone poll indicates the Greens would come a poor third, if the elections were held now. A total of 1,004 adult residents in Brighton and Hove were questioned Between October 3 and 8. The key findings are: • the Labour Party would receive the most votes, with a 38% share (up 6%) - compared with 25% for the Conservatives (down 4%) and 21% for the Green Party (down 12%); UKIP would receive 9% of votes (up 8%), overtaking the Liberal Democrats (6% - up 1%);
views of residents are held more keenly than positive views (very poor: 25% vs very good: 5%); • in a similar trend, more Brighton and Hove residents say that the environment has been managed successfully (51%) than unsuccessfully (48%) since 2011. Those that say it has been managed unsuccessfully, however, tend to say it has been managed very unsuccessfully (25%), while those that say it has been managed successfully tend say to say it has been managed only fairly successfully (38%); • areas of council success are perceived to be: generally making the area a nice place to live (65%); policing and personal safety (64%); and council-run services, such as leisure centres, youth clubs and libraries (59%);
• road use - parking, in particular - was mentioned as an issue that determines the voting choice of more than one in 20 residents (6%). General anti-Green Party sentiment (5%) is balanced by a similar number of people saying that environmental policy is an important factor in determining their voting choice (5%);
• the area the council is perceived to have been most unsuccessful is transport, such as roads, traffic, parking and buses (66%). More than half of residents think that planning and the availability of housing, and the general running of the council, such as managing budgets and the level of council tax, have been managed unsuccessfully (both 52%).
• in terms of the overall performance of the minority Green Party administration since 2011, slightly more than half (53%) say that it has been poor, just ahead of the proportion saying it has been good (43%). But the negative
Councillor Warren Morgan, leader of the Labour and Cooperative Group on the city council, said: “This reflects what we know from talking to voters on the doorstep, and our historic win in July’s by-election in a key Green-held ward, that we are
on course to win control of the council on May 7 2015. It also shows Labour likely to win all three of the city’s parliamentary constituencies on the same day, ousting the one Green and two Tory MPs. “It shows we are right to listen to residents and to campaign for sensible policies which deliver on jobs, homes and schools in the face of huge Conservative government cuts to council funding. Voters have clearly said they want the Greens out and a sensible approach to transport and parking issues. Here we have hard evidence that Labour is best placed to do that.” The Green Party, however, said that - across the 10 key performance indicators - an average of 46% think the Greens have done well, compared with 40% who do not. Jason Kitcat, the Green leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “We take feedback very seriously and this poll of local voters shows the Greenled council is making long term progress on the key issues that matter to voters. “Taken against the backdrop of a sustained Government attack on councils’ ability to provide services and our administration not having overall control of the council, I am delighted that we are seen by residents as having performed well on six out of 10 of the key performance measures. “I’m especially pleased that voters think we are succeeding in making the city a nice place to live, that schooling has improved, and that we have advanced on making the city feel a safer place. It is a credit to the administration and all our hardworking staff.” @GregHadfield

The night I discovered that I was living next to a party house Dan Wilson @wilsondan
Visitors are the economic lifeblood of Brighton and Hove. Tourism has been our trade for nearly 300 years and the money that day-trippers, dirty-weekenders, conference delegates and others bring in is vital for businesses and jobs across the city. The recent rise of holiday lets has meant that visitors are increasingly staying further from the seafront and in residential areas. Party houses, often catering for stag and hen dos, are not unusual in otherwise quiet parts of town. On my little street in Hove, not far from the sea, the first I knew of our new party house came on the Jubilee weekend last year. Three cabs arrived with more than a dozen students looking forward to a weekend of partying. The drinking, music and noisy fun didn’t stop from Friday to Tuesday evening. And not just into the wee small hours, but until well after dawn. They were all crammed into a rather small three-bedroom house so the street also became their playground. Polite requests to pipe down were rebuffed. It was only when a sleuthing neighbour found the house on a Brighton-based holiday lets website, that we realised we now had a party house in the community. Over the subsequent months, we saw a slew of noisy and sometimes unpleasant visitors come to stay for the weekend. Thankfully, the property is now
on a long let. But every week, we residents did wonder what each weekend would bring. Further research showed that the same agency had three other properties within a 100-metre radius. Including two adjacent houses that sleep 16 people each. The company has about 100 party houses on their books that host between one and 40 guests each at a time, according to their website. With the two big party houses nearby, few summer weekends go by without an inflatable sex doll adorning the balconies and a postmidnight gathering of drinkers and smokers on the stoop and street carousing into the night. The agency in question claims they make regular patrols and also boast a 24-hour hotline. From my experience, the patrols are mythical - and, unless you know

Death and dying in Brighton and Hove Rose Collis Author of Death and the City
In his diary, the writer JR Ackerley noted down a quote from Sophocles’s play Antigone: “We have only a little time to please the living, but all eternity to love the dead”. He died the next day. That, to me, sums up what death brings: sadness, tragedy, irony and, occasionally, gallows humour. Death and all its pomps and works has been thrust upon me, far too early and far too often for my liking. A few years ago, it occurred to me that, while I had only been to four weddings, I had been to a disproportionately high number of funerals and memorials. I’ve written obituaries of those known to me personally, and others only admired from afar. I’ve organised funerals, composed and delivered eulogies and - even during the completion of my new book - had another first: singing and playing banjolele at a funeral. Over the years, my research has borne out what I had long suspected: that Brighton is a
perfect microcosm of the British national experience of death, in all its forms. Outside of the major cities, I have found nowhere in the UK that so accurately and poignantly epitomises it, historically and socially. By virtue of coincidence and chance, it teems with innumerable idiosyncrasies and uncanny landmarks that have had a profound effect on both the national consciousness and history. You doubt me? Here are just a few examples: The first person ever to die from car crash injuries was from Brighton. A Brighton teacher’s murder led to the creation of a new law to make possession of ‘violent and extreme pornography’ a criminal offence. A Brighton child’s death in 1973 brought the issue of child abuse into the public consciousness for the first time and brought about radical changes in the law and social care policies. The last outbreak in Britain of smallpox occurred in Brighton (in 1951). And the first Allied soldier to fire shots in WWI was from Brighton,

The Book Doctor Laura Lockington
The Marlowe Papers by Ros Barber “A dish fit for the gods”... “a fool’s paradise”... “a plague on both your houses”... and “green-eyed monster”. These are just a few of the many phrases that we still say were coined by Shakespeare. The genius of the man is not in dispute. I still shiver at the memory of a production of Macbeth, with the amazing Patrick Stewart, that quite literally made the hair at the back of my neck stand on end. His words are as fresh and as apt now as they were when first penned. Even the poor students who are dragged by the scruff of the neck to the bard often arrive at the same conclusion; he is loved by the whole world. He stands tall and alone in the glorious
creation of wordsmiths. But was it him? Did Shakespeare write all of those plays? Scholars have debated this for years. Kit Marlowe steps into the picture: a scholar, a playwright, a self-confessed atheist, a lover of taverns and brawling. Murdered in a pub fight. Or was he? Could he have been smuggled across the Channel and continued to write under the name of Will Shakespeare? The dirt and the squalor, the riches and the glory of London in the most exciting of times are drawn with remarkable detail. But was it Shakespeare? You can find out in this awardwinning book. All’s well that ends well. Ros Barber will be appearing at The Bookish Supper Society at The Naked Eye Gallery on Wednesday, October 30.

It’s not our party. We’ll cry if we want to “Brighton looks as though it is a town helping the police with their enquiries.” So Hunslet-born Keith Waterhouse described his adopted home. We know what he meant. With love and admiration. Such emotions quickly evaporate, of course, when we walk up West Street, late on a Friday night. It is, of course, often only high spirits of other that depress us. Even scare us. It’s the price we pay - happily, to a greater or lesser degree - to live in such a marvellous city. Most of us would not live anywhere else. But when we talk - often glbily - about the “night-time economy”, we need to stop and think. If only for a while. For the night-time economy often means excessive drink. Routine drugs. And, shamefully, serial sexual assaults by young men on vulnerable young women. Stags in searhc of hens. The vocabulary is beyond wrong. Beyond inappropraite. We have all seen it. And often, at many levels, it is harmless fun. Brighton and Hove is, after all, a fun city. We must not be po-faced. But neither must we ignore the damage that is done to the fabric of our lives. Especially in residential areas a little way from the epicentre of the seafront. It is one of the great joys of our city that we live, work and play in a mixed and constricted
geographical area. We should not complain, without reason. Equally, though, we should discuss what sort of city we want to inhabit. Do we want to live next door to a party house - a house where every weekend is rowdy and raucous for us. But a weekend to remember (or forget?) for our here-today-gone-on-Monday neighbours. First, we need to assess the scale of the problem, challenge, issue. Call it what you will. In some areas, it is just another piece of a jigsaw of daily and nightly disruption and distrubance. Part of the price we pay for living in a city that is home to 30,000 students, two universities, and 300-plus party houses. This is not a localised problem. Any three-bedroom property that can squeeze in 30 people promises to be a cash-cow for the owners, even if it stands empty - wastefully between Tuesday and Friday. Well done to Geoffrey Bowden for scrutinising the issue. Well done to councillors of all parties for taking it seriously. As our columnist Dan Wilson says so powerfully today: “A council clampdown on holiday lets is vital. Not because they need to be stifled, but rather regulated for the good of the city. Responsible, neighbourly, holiday lets should be part of the tourism economy mix.” Hear, hear! Here.

Criminalisation of drugs is wrong and does not work The methadone molecule
Jean Calder (page 8, October 18) is, of course, right to point out the dangers in the use of methadone, and indeed of “controlled” drugs and of the abuse of cheap alcohol. She is, however, wrong in appearing to support the continued criminalisation of drugs. In this context, I have for her consideration first, a phrase from the history books: US Prohibition, the inefficacy of which - and the way it laid up problems for the future by enriching and enabling criminals - is notorious. Secondly, taking her point that more people drink alcohol than use drugs, I would like her to consider this memorable quotation from
a former head of the French antidrugs organisation, who appeared in a TV programme about drugs in the 1990s: “The war against drugs is over: we lost!” It is true that we, the general population, must still battle the huge pharmaceutical and alcohol companies, who have such a vested interest in these matters. My point is that finally abandoning the failed policy of spending vast amounts of time and money on attempts to stop the production and distribution, not to mention actual use, of drugs would - when politicians have had the courage to discuss the option openly and then take it - be
a forward-looking measure, and would strike a potentially fatal blow against the world’s Mr Bigs; whereas “drug raids” and “hauls” by the police clearly have little effect For, despite Jean’s wise words on most of the issues around drugs, alcohol etc, I fear her basic attitude to drugs is puritanical. She is - inadvertently, I am sure - as much part of the problem as of the solution. There is no room for political and public hypocrisy in this matter. And I would urge her to avoid that at all costs!

Addiction is a social problem and is not a personal one I am delighted to note Jean Calder (page 8, October 18) is one of your regular contributors! I have been reading her bits and pieces over many years (often in the old Evening Argus) - generally finding myself in total agreement with her comments on so many varied topics. I have mixed feelings, however, regarding her “The madness of methadone” article, where she opens with a quotation from the young Karl Marx, and misses the crucial point Marx was making. This is arguably even more relevant today than when he wrote it. Jean Calder concludes by implying addiction arises essentially as a “personal” problem. rather than a social one. Marx argued that religion is both “the expression of real misery” and “a protest against real misery”, because it substitutes “illusory happiness of people” for those seeking “real happiness”. Marx realises the use of drugs (ie opium) is another ineffective expedient for escaping the problems of the “real world”; he identifies these two unsatisfactory mechanisms in his famous epigram that religion is “the opium of the people”. Jean Calder has dragged this quotation from Marx’s brief essay criticising Hegelian political philosophy, written in the 1840s, but it is quite irrelevant to her major theme, the providing of methadone to addicts; Marx was focusing on the creation of a “new society”,
both “practical and possible”, with humans taking control of their own lives – a society no longer controlled by “money”, in the form of bankers and property owners; rather a social system where goods are manufactured primarily to satisfy human needs rather than, as commodities, adding to the profits of the wealthy. She seems to miss the thrust of Marx’s point. Whatever the religion selected - whichever drug taken both are dangerous evasions of the real problems facing today’s world. Indeed, in this country in particular, there is general agreement between the Camerons, Milibands and Cleggs to maintain the status quo. Both right and left support the Labour search for “responsible capitalism”, resulting in the widespread covert undercutting of social advances achieved by working people during the last century; the rich get richer, the disadvantaged poorer! Given this situation, whether a demoralised individual seeks solace in a religious congregation or by sniffing cocaine, becomes quite irrelevant. Both options are forms of resignation from the pressing struggles of today’s world – faced with climate change, a multitude of wars and barbarities – arguably much more pertinent today than they were when Marx was scribbling his pamphlets. Brighton Marina must not become a housing estate nor attraction to developers The land at Brighton Marina is a brownfield site and, therefore, an attraction to developers. But there are many other sites in the Brighton and Hove that could offer more convenient homes without destroying the marina - which should be a jewel in the crown of our city. Nobody would build such a thing today, as the cost would be astronomical. So let’s preserve it

and continue to make it first and foremost for boats and sailors and place for everyone to relax and enjoy family outings. The proposed application involves building high-rise towers that will cast shadow along the boardwalk, where now many of us like to relax and eat in the sun. It will just become a housing estate. So please don’t let this happen. Stella McCrickard

Charity begins at home – with the elderly Mike Holland
Well, we are all likely to get there! And I am not talking about the cycling paradise currently being worked on by our council. I am referring to old age. We all hope we are going to be dementia free and pass away peacefully in our sleep. That is, if we think about it at all. Because, for some reason, it all seems to be a bit of a taboo subject. The reality is that no matter how rich or poor we are - or what race, colour or creed - we all still stand every chance of ending up in some awful nursing or care home, such as Orchid View in Copthorne. It will not have mattered one jot what wonderfully-selfless things we have done to benefit mankind, or how pious. In other words, no matter who you are, old age creeps up - and most elderly people end up with a degree of dementia.
So with all that to look forward to, what are we doing about it? Not a lot is the answer - although I am sure there will be people jumping up and down who will doubtless be in contact to inform me they run an absolutely wonderful facility. I am sure there are wonderful facilities out there although, as yet, I still have to be convinced. From what I have seen there are some pretty dire homes that are simply not fit for purpose. Many of these so-called nursing
affairs indeed and make more land available. It is obvious to all but the extremely thick that there are more groups protesting at the plight of bats, newts and toads than there are who are concerned at the plight of the aged human animal. For goodness sake, wake up and let’s get real here. We need to do something about the way we treat our aged humans. That treatment needs to involve respect and compassion. What is the point in working hard all Many nursing or care homes your life to provide better future for are in old converted properties ayourself and your with inadequate facilities” family, only to find yourself dumped or care homes are in old converted off to spend most of your last few properties that are mostly with months or years in a box room. inadequate facilities. Particularly Am I exaggerating? Well, I have in the south of England, it is just watched my lovely old cousin difficult to provide enough spend her last 12 months in a box purpose-built facilities, because room that she hardly left. there is a shortage of building land. I am now watching her husband Our city planners and councillors living out his last period of life in in the south need to wake up and another box room. This is a man realise this is a very sorry state of who fought right through the last
‘‘
Old age creeps up on us all war and lost a leg at Arnhem. A man who is so patriotic that if you cut him in half it would say Britain through and through. At the end of the day, what are we doing for him - other than precious little? Somewhere along the line, we need to get our priorities straight. We have an aging population and people are living longer. It’s not all about kids and education. It’s not all about what the price of energy is going to be in 10 years’ time or whether some twit of a politician has said something they should not have done. We need to start looking after our elderly properly with a dedicated percentage of the country’s annual budget dedicated to looking after that sector.
They are the ones who have paid taxes all their lives. They are the ones who deserve first dibs on being looked after properly. If that means we can’t give the level of assistance we would like to the rest of the world, then so be it. Let’s bring this subject out into the open. Let’s stop treating the issue as taboo and wake up our politicians to the fact that one day they too will be old. Let’s remind them that they too are likely to suffer some form of dementia and will not always be the silvertongued wordsmiths they are at present. Will they listen? Well let’s try them. Charity begins at home. @RealMikeHolland

Festival film is testimony to Connor and his family
A documentary about Connor Saunders, the teenage footballer killed last year by a single punch to the head, has been selected for this year’s CINECITY, the Brighton film festival, which opens on Nov 14. The 24-minute film - entitled 5 Is Alive - was made by husbandand-wife Paul Loman and Barbara Myers, of Homegrown Films. Barbara - who has made her name as a radio broadcaster on BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service - is a two-time Sony Gold Award winner. In 2004, she became the Medical Journalists’ Association
Freelance Journalist of the Year. Paul is a successful computer software developer and a newmedia specialist. Linking their complementary skills to the new digital technology, they formed Homegrown Films and embarked on second careers as independent film-makers with a passion for documenting real-life stories. Their latest production is an intensely-moving account of how an ordinary family made an extraordinary decision. In a raw and compelling testimony
to their 19-year-old son, Connor’s parents tell how they came to offer his organs for donation. The documentary - made with support from Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust - shows what happens next as Connor’s gift saves six lives and as the Saunders family sets off on a new path in their own lives. Brighton and Hove - Past and Present
Time will tell if Seven Dials can rediscover the tranquility of the horse-and-cart days when this old photograph was taken. Looking south down Dyke Road, the tower seen in the centre is the Old Clifton Road Congregational Church, which was demolished in 1972. To the right is the famous elm tree saved from the chop by protesters earlier this year, before the start of current changes to the roundabout and its surrounding area. Business How businesses can pay their bills with goods and services Is a “local trade exchange” the key to unlocking business growth in Brighton and Hove? Dan Webb (pictured), a director of Brightonbased goodmoney, thinks so. A trade exchange is a type of mutual credit clearing system that enables a community of businesses to trade their unsold goods and services, without the need for cash or bank credit. By removing the need for conventional money, they make it much easier for existing businesses to invest in growth and for completely new businesses to get off the ground. In such a competitive economy, it can be difficult for local businesses to generate sufficient profits to invest in their future. A local trade exchange, however,
would enable local businesses to pay for things such as new websites and marketing campaigns with their own goods and services, rather than having to accumulate sufficient profit.

This will vary between business sectors. But, typically, businesses are selling unsold capacity - so the actual saving to the business is immense. So how can we make this happen in Brighton and Hove? To get off the ground, and to ensure the credits maintain their value at par with conventional money, a trade exchange needs to launch with a critical mass of at least 15 local businesses. These founding members must fulfil certain criteria. They must be businesses with more than one person, well regarded in the local community, financially sound, and supply goods or services needed by most other businesses. They also need to be capable spending £300 to £700 a month with

Young Hove squash sensation is talent-spotted by Freedom Leisure
State-of-the-art show homes now open
Hove squash sensation Tom Walsh, who is already well on his way to national success, has been given an extra boost by not-for-profit leisure trust Freedom Leisure which has selected him for its Talented Athlete Support Scheme. Tom, 14, is a familiar face on the squash courts in the country as he plays for the Sussex County Junior Team and the London and South East Regional Team. He began squash at the age of eight and has since excelled. In February 2013 Tom won his first Boys U15 ESR Silver Event. He was 6th in the English Junior Championships in March 2013 and competed in the British Junior Open in January 2013. His current National Ranking is 4th in the U15 boys category. “I’m so pleased to be accepted onto the Talented Athlete Support Scheme”, says Tom. “Last year I was selected as reserve for the U13 England team, but this season I’m hoping to break into the U15 National team,
Does someone you know deserve the best care? A new care home in Brighton has opened its show suites, giving local residents a first peek at what they can expect from the state-of-the-art home. The 99-bed home is the first in the area from Hallmark Care Homes, an awardwinning care provider with homes across England and Wales.

The support from Freedom Leisure has given my training and confidence a big boost so I’m extremely hopeful that I’ll achieve my goals.” Tom trains at Freedom Leisure’s Withdean Sports Complex where he also does gym training as part of his strength and conditioning work. Under the Talented Athlete Support Scheme, Tom has his membership fee waived and he can train at any of the other 34 Freedom Leisure centres across Sussex, Kent and Surrey. “Tom is an inspirational athlete who has put in years of effort to achieve his high standard: it is our pleasure to accept him onto the Talented Athlete Scheme so he can continue his training with our full support”, says Freedom Leisure Centre Manager Ross Philipson. Freedom Leisure launched the Talented Athlete scheme in 2012 to give a helping hand to talented young athletes aged 14-25. They offer 30 spaces each year and successful applicants receive 12 months Connected Membership. For more information, visit www.freedom-leisure.co.uk.
Outstanding facilities The home will include two cafés where residents can relax with a cup of coffee or enjoy time with their friends and relatives. There will also be a corner shop enabling residents to continue a daily routine of picking up everyday essentials. Residents will be able to do their own laundry, if they wish, in one of the home’s laundry rooms or treat themselves to a new hair cut in the hair salon and a manicure in the spa therapy room. The library and cinema will offer the chance to get lost in a whole new story while the roof top terrace gives the opportunity to get a bit of fresh air and enjoy views of the surrounding gardens. the needs of a loved one change, they won’t have to move home. The home’s relationship-cantered care approach means placing the individuals’ needs at the very centre of the care provided. This means building a relationship with every resident, listening to their stories and learning about their lives. Dementia community The home will have a separate dementia community with its own range of facilities, including a residents’ laundry room, corner shop and café. Residents living with a form of dementia are enabled to continue to live an active and independent life. New opportunities Lesley Standing, the home manager, said: “I feel in a very privileged position to be given this opportunity to deliver a new model of care for this care home in Brighton. I look forward to welcoming many people over the weekend and I’m excited to show everyone just what we have to offer at Maycroft Manor.” Don’t miss your opportunity to discover why Maycroft Manor is a care home with a difference. Just the Job! Charity initiative by BrightonandHoveJobs BrightonandHoveJobs.com is committed to working harder than ever to support the local community. After winning the Brighton and Hove Business Award for Greatest Contribution to the Community this summer, the online jobs board is - for the third year running launching its charity initiative for 2014 today. BrightonandHoveJobs.com is now one of four local jobsites within the newly-created brand: www. LoveLocalJobs.com. Consequently, it will focus on a single charity for 2014 in the Brighton and Hove area. For its part, LoveLocalJobs.com will continue to support three other charities a year via each of its job boards: GatwickDiamondJobs.com; the recently-launched 1066Jobs. com, for the Hastings and Rother area: and CoastalWestSussexJobs. com, which reaches as far west as Chichester. Gary Peters, the company’s founder, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to expand the charity initiative across the entire LoveLocalJobs.com portfolio. “The uptake and response to the
initiative has been so positive and we’ve even gained national recognition for its continued success. All of our online job boards work very hard to better link the private, public and third sectors to raise the awareness of local employment and skills and we are very proud of the free services we provide to the third sector. I’m very much looking forward to reading through the applications and announcing the winners very soon.” The benefits of being the charity of the year include a dedicated page on BrightonandHoveJobs. com, dedicated e-newsletters to the local audience, advertising opportunities across the site, free recruitment advertising for the whole of 2014, and many more associations with this multiaward-winning business. Yoddi Papa, trustee of SafetyNet, which won the 2013 initiative, said: “Since SafetyNet were chosen by BrightonandHoveJobs.com as one of their charities in 2013, we have been able to extend the reach of our activity and raise our profile significantly. Due to BrightonandHoveJobs.com raising
our profile, we have had significant interest from an number of organisations, with the latest coming from Disney Penguin.” For details on how to apply, visit BrightonandHoveJobs.com. If you are a charity and you think your charity better fits one of the other LoveLocaJobs.com areas, check the area profile: Gatwick Diamond - Crawley, Horsham, Redhill, Mid-Sussex, Reigate and Surrey; Coastal West Sussex - Shorehamby-Sea, Lancing, Arundel, Worthing, Bognor Regis; Chichester 1066 - Hastings, Battle, Eastbourne, Rother, Rye, Battle and Tunbridge Wells. Favourable consideration will be given to those projects which directly benefit a large number of children or residents in the local area, positively increasing the quality of local lives. Additionally, if your project can benefit people with training, employment or personal development this will also be considered favourably. The deadline for applications is midnight on Sunday, December 1 2013.
Bright future awaits for Brighton Open Market
Half of the business units in Brighton Open Market have now been let, three months before it is due to open in January, it has been revealed. With a mix of both established and start-up businesses, the future looks promising for the city’s historic market site. Permanent market units and temporary stalls will accommodate a range of traders. The Market Square (see artist’s impression) will also host a regular series of events including street art and entertainment. Victoria Williams, a director of the community interest company that will run the site, said: “We’re delighted with the interest we’ve seen in
the market from both traders and members of the public. Our city is full of enterprising businesses and new ideas. “The market will be a place where these can take root and thrive. We’re still keen to hear from traders yet to apply for space - although we’re filling up quickly, there are definitely options still available.” The London Road site has accommodated a local market since the 1920s. Work on the £20m transformation started in January last year; the new market will provide a platform for local traders and producers, with a focus on promoting fresh, local, healthy food, organic and ethicallysourced produce and ecofriendly goods.

The Great As with United 93 (also about a real-life hi-jack), Greengrass is excellent at building and

As a result, the final act is nail-bitingly tense and the climax is both terrifying and genuinely shocking, all the more so for the knowledge that this actually happened. Worth seeing? Captain Phillips is a pacey and gripping real-life thriller with a strong script and a terrific performance from Tom Hanks that is certain to garner some awards attention come Oscar time. Food For Friends
Exquisite vegetarian niche in the heart of our city

Food for Friends is one of the main staples of vegetarian dining in Brighton and Hove - if not the main staple. First opening its doors in 1981 as a self-service cafe with a laid-back, bohemian atmosphere, the current owners took over in 2004 and gave the Food for Friends brand a refresh, subsequently turning it into the restaurant atmosphere we know and love today. “It has evolved over time,” owner Ramin, who took over nine years ago, tells me. “This area has evolved, Brighton has evolved and Food for Friends has managed to evolve with it”. Articulate and self assured, Ramin explains upon takeover he decided to continue with the vegetarian theme: “We see it as a strength”. Quite rightly so. In a prime location such as the heart of The Lanes and with an evergrowing interest in vegetarianism, veganism and the awareness of adhering to a gluten-free diet on the rise, Food for Friends has found an exquisite niche in our city. Not to mention the recent accolade of appearing in the Good Food Guide
2014, a success of which Ramin is incredibly modest, stating only: “We are very pleased”. The menu has a clear Mediterranean streak running through it, with a host of dishes containing feta, halloumi or fresh vegetables, alongside Asianinspired rice pockets and Indiantinged coconut curry. All dishes are clearly labelled and options for different dietary requirements can be adhered to upon request. Sat at a glorious window seat with the last day of summer pouring in through the window, I carefully selected the Sweet Tofu Pockets, crammed full of brown basmati rice, smoked tofu, spring onions and chilli, served with pickled ginger, wakame and a sesame mirin dressing, to start. Tempting as the halloumi salad with mango and avocado seemed, I chose the Portobello Mushrooms stuffed with feta, sun-dried tomatoes and pine nuts, served with turnip and potato dauphinoise, fine beans, red and green pesto and crème fraîche for my main course. The sweet tofu pockets were wonderful. Elegantly presented with a clear attention to detail, the brown basmati rice, infused with sweet, smokey tofu and spring onion, poured over the sides of
the tofu skinned pockets, spilling onto the wakame and pickled ginger. Each flavour was delicately balanced and made for an exciting, different and enjoyable starter. My main course followed suit and was as delectable as the first. The classic combination of crunchy green beans and homemade pesto went lovingly alongside two huge feta engulfed portobello mushrooms. Crème fraîche proudly adorned the potato dauphinoise and made for a very appealing end of summer dish.
When you don’t question or think where the meat or fish element is in a dish, and it doesn’t feel like the plate is lacking, you know you’ve tasted fine vegetarian cuisine. Food for Friends is a Brighton and Hove institution. Meat-eater or not, I urge you to bask in their welcoming and charming atmosphere. Serving affordable, high quality and fresh food, I’m confident the evolution of the city will always have room for such a welcoming and pleasant restaurant.
Nine of the best recognised by The Observer Claire Beveridge
There’s nothing more satisfying than scanning the pages of a Sunday newspaper to find hordes of Brighton-based names appearing and being given representation, respect and above all, coveted runnersup places in the 10th Observer Food Monthly Awards. Voted for by the public, Brighton and Hove kept the South section ticking over, with no fewer than nine different establishments being recognised for their talents, dedication and hard work. Well done and congratulations to all involved. Here’s to next year!

Tucked away in Meeting House Lane lies BYOC Brighton, the city’s newest and coolest concept bar. Originally starting life in London’s Covent Garden, the BYOC branch (Bring Your Own Cocktails), in case you were wondering) has expanded here to our seaside city and promises to add a new and exciting element to Brighton’s bar culture. BYOC Brighton, however, has a secret twist. It doesn’t serve alcohol. Not a drop. No gin, no rum, no whisky, no nothing. The clue is in the name; patrons supply their own liquor. With a bottle of ethanol in hand, each patron pays a £20 entrance fee and that £20 gets you not only two hours of highly-skilled, professional mixologists’ time, it also includes access to “an encyclopedic selection of fresh syrups, pressed fruit and vegetable juices, spices, herbs, salts, seasonal fruits, homemade cordials and bitters”. Of course, to our seasoned bar drinkers, the opening of BYOC does beg the question of why pay £12 for a double vodka and soda in a mainstream bar, when you can club together with some mates and get stuck into a bottle of your choosing, as well as watch the cocktails being made in front of you? Expect exposed brickwork, jaunty wooden tables and jazz on the gramophone. You can leave your double entendres at home and glam up for the evening whilst sipping on bespoke drinks and cocktails throughout the night. Reservations are required in advance. So book ahead and beat the Christmas party rush.

Sep 24 – Oct 23 Don’t get involved in petty disagreements at work. Remember you can’t please all of the people all of the time. If this job is successful there is the possibility of travel, increased finance and job satisfaction!

April 21 – May 21 At one time you thought you were mad to have those suspicions. But a declaration made this week or a secret unveiled will confirm them. So rather than a gasp of shock you will breathe a sigh of relief. Whether single or in a couple this is a good week for quiet dinners for two not hell raising parties.
Oct 24 – Nov 22 You ‘re good at delivering difficult news or tackling awkward subjects but how good are you at receiving this sort of information? Someone close wishes to air an issue which is, not as yet, a full blown grievance. If you listen openly you may well find that you reach a new understanding which may benefit you both long term.
GEMINI May 22 – June 21 You will find it difficult this week because you know a firm decision has to be made and you are fearful of making the wrong one. Don’t despair the solution is right under your nose. Any movement on the romantic front will also be the subject of discussion this week. But don’t be too business-like try to have fun!

This year’s collection underscores the Electric Hairdressing signature image of edgy yet couture hair that always warrants an editorial comment. ‘The Assassins Collection’ focuses on Electric’s current vein of ‘Cracked Perimeter’ styling that adds a defiant and rebellious aspect to classic, simple hair. The collection also cements the Electric colour ethos. Colours are rich, strong but controlled, helping to complete the look not define it. This year’s collection gives you the autumn/winter 2013 musthave colours which are the dark golden mahogany blonde, a golden copper blonde and a rich mocha brown. It also gives you a sneak preview
Electric Hairdressing Brighton Address:18 Ship Street, Brighton BN1 1AD Tel: (01273) 202088
into the styles of spring/summer 2014. Mark and the art team created this collection and the styles have been seen all over the Spring/Summer 2014 catwalks. The Bob and the ‘Cracked Perimeter’ fringe, as well as the long undone look where the hair has dual texture, is slicked close to the scalp at the top and in loose waves at the bottom, are here for 2014. Hitchcock inspired, Assassins reflects the shadowy world of the 1930’s and 40’s Film Noir. Deep and shadowy, each unsmiling image evokes a dark, slightly sinister story that’s yet to be revealed. The collection was shot in an old theatre, the vast empty blackness created a depth of field that threw the hair forward with dramatic results. Mark Woolley, the founder of Electric, says: “Assassins is yet another milestone in the creative journey for Electric Hairdressing. This collection totally epitomises Electric Hairdressing”
June 22 – July 22 Your emotions are running high this week and you find yourself reminiscing about past times and loves. So much of what is happening now seems a replay of then. Be careful, very careful. There’s a hint of rose coloured glasses here. Ask yourself was it really that good? Get a dose of perspective and a measure of friends that’ll help!
LEO
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 21 Your love life should be taking centre stage anytime soon. If you are single be ready for some surprises. Not only will you be shocked by whose interest you have captivated but you will also be stunned at your own response to such a revelation. If you are already taken you are in for some heady romantic days and nights!
CAPRICORN 22 December – January 20 We know you are hard working and sometimes your expectations are difficult for others to live up to. Take a deeper look and you will see that someone is doing their best. There are other areas where you can be a little judgmental too. Be careful you may not spot the expression of gratitude, sorrow or apology sincerely given.
July 23 – August 22 Have you heard of the hair shirt? Well you don’t have to wear it. You’re not the only one who can fix things and you have more choices than you think. Be open to lover, friends, family and colleagues they need you as much as you need them in the coming weeks. A trip to the theatre or sporting event should provide a diversion.

August 23 – September 23 That person at work you had your suspicions about and thought might be duplicitous, you’re right they are. But they are also cunning so extra caution is needed to tackle this bad boy! Get everyone onside before you expose them. Travel and entertainment are forecast so there is the possibility of a seasonal trip to see friends or family soon.
February 20 – March 20 Things are about to happen that could bring more stability and tranquility into your life. There could be career opportunities opening up, investments paying out or you may receive a small gift or win. The security this financial improvement brings will act as a catalyst for an improvement in your well being and personal relationships. Enjoy it, you deserve it!
January 21 – February 19 Off with the old and on with the new as they say. Change is on its way. This could be a change of career or location, perhaps to far flung places. Embrace it fully and you will prosper both emotionally and financially. But you’ll need to keep loved ones apprised of these changes if you are to avoid conflict!

Motoring Energy efficiency puts the brakes on motoring costs Motoring is cheaper today than it was a decade ago. In real terms travelling in a new car costs 13p per mile in fuel, compared to 15p back in 2000 (inflation adjusted). Sust-it’s analysis of the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) emissions testing data reveals a 34% improvement in fuel efficiency across car manufacturers ranges. In the last 13 years the average miles per gallon for new petrol cars has jumped from 32 to 43 mpg and diesels from 43 to 58 mpg. Sust-it has examined the energy efficiency, between 2000 and 2013, of manufacturers with 500 or more UK model variants, and found that the top ten most improved brands are Kia, BMW, Hyundai, Volvo, Toyota, Mercedes, Fiat, Honda, Peugeot and Subaru. Kia’s model range is top with a 46% more fuel-efficient range in 2013 versus 2000. Premium brand BMW is chasing hard with fuel-efficiency improvements of 42%. Unsurprisingly, small car manufacturer Fiat has the most fuel-efficient model range – with Seat, Skoda, Citroen and Peugeot in pursuit. In addition Sust-it has delved into the recently published electric vehicle testing data and found that the running cost of these vehicles is less than half that of even the most fuel efficient diesel cars. The Renault Clio 4 dCi 90 ECO diesel costs around 7.5p per mile, compared to 3p mile for the electric BMW i3; that’s 56% cheaper to run.

However, we would suggest drivers not pick a policy based on price alone, but to also think about the level of cover. A number of insurers include additional features, such as a courtesy car, breakdown cover or legal assistance as standard, but some insurers offer these as optional extras. The latest research into factors which influence UK motorists’ choice of policies, commissioned by Gocompare.com, revealed that in addition to the price of the policy, drivers were concerned about the level of cover on offer and the insurer’s reputation, particularly in the relation to them paying out for claims. Big match preview: Brighton & Hove Albion vs Watford

Amex faithful hoping Seagulls avoid Fright Night horror show The Albion will be desperate to avoid their own fright night when free-scoring Watford head to The Amex on Monday evening. With fans being urged to attend in fancy dress for the Halloween themed fixture supporters will be hoping they don’t end the match hiding behind their padded Amex seats and peeking out at the football between their fingers. Last time Watford were in town a rampaging Hornets team left Gus Poyet’s promotion hopefuls humbled by a slick passing performance epitomised and Albion fans could be forgiven for fearing a repeat. Gianfranco Zola’s team are the only team in the Championship with a better pass completion rate than the Seagulls (83.6 per cent compared to 81.5) and average a division-leading 6.5 shots on target on their travels. No side has scored more league goals this term, with Watford chalking up 24 goals in their 12 matches so far from their 16.9 shots per game average. Brighton however have managed just 11 goals and in the absence of Leo Ulloa will likely rely on Ashley Barnes and Leroy Lita in the central striking slot – neither of whom have found the net in the league this season, Lita albeit
Keith Andrews’ experience in the Albion midfield could prove vital having only made one appearance from the bench since arriving on loan. With Kazenga Lua Lua missing for eight weeks, Craig Conway is expected to again start on the left flank after an improved outing against Yeovil last weekend. Will Buckley should continue on the right unless Oscar opts for a more defensive line-up in a bid to nullify Watford’s attacking intentions. Three quarters of the back four again picks itself, with the only question mark being whether Oscar persists with Bruno at right back or recalls Inigo Calderon to the starting team after a less-thanimpressive outing from Bruno at Huish Park. Midfield remains an area of debate among Albion aficionados. With Liam Bridcutt not expected

back until next month Keith Andrews seems a certain starter alongside Andrew Crofts. The last pick is less certain. Any one of Rohan Ince, Jake Forster-Caskey and David Lopez could get the nod depending on what approach Oscar wants to implement. Whoever plays will need to be mindful of their opponent’s impressive midfield which boasts an embarrassment of riches in terms of creative options. Summer signing Lewis McGugan has clocked up five goals and two assists this season and will need to be kept a close eye on, while in a more advanced role Fernando Forestieri has again impressed, with his three goals and two assists proving a useful foil for main attacking threat Troy Deeney who has half a dozen league goals.

He [Lita] looks quite lively; I know Leroy from a long time ago and the only thing with him is that he hasn’t played much football lately, so he’s not ready for 90 minutes. He brings potency, he is sharp and powerful and he knows the role. He’s got goals in him; everywhere he’s gone he’s scored goals.” “Yeovil was a very difficult place to come to; they work hard, they’re very organised, they give everything and that’s what’s got them success. “We just didn’t have enough of a real clinical edge in the last third. It’s a little bit frustrating, but we go on. We know we’re missing that goalscorer, that one who can win you games.”

Albion Statistics:
Will Buckley remains one of the Albion’s most exciting players despite an indifferent start to life under Oscar Garcia. The flying winger has had to adapt his game to play a more central role because of injuries to the club’s central strikers but has shown flashes of his best form which fans will hope he can replicate on a more consistent basis over the coming weeks.

Stating: 1. The application does not comply with the 1968 Brighton Marina Act in that it is outside the area permitted for buildings under sections 22 and 40 of the 1968 Act 2. The navigable channel will be narrowed to the south of the West Quay. There is a risk this will endanger mariners entering and leaving the harbour. 3. The height of the buildings will exceed the height of the cliffs in contravention of Section 59 of the 1968 Act.
