The consultation is over: questionnaires sent to 58,000 addresses; 11,700 returned; a total of 15,000 responses (when you include 3,300 from people living outside the area affected by “Phase 2”). Total cost: £41,000, of which £23,000 was spent on postage. Documents obtained by Brighton & Hove Independent indicate that support for 20mph - “in the street

where you live” varied significantly between the nine discrete areas covered by Phase 2: Preston (63%); Coldean (57%); Bevendean and north Mouslecoomb, East Brighton, Hollingdean and south Mouslecoomb, and West Hove (all 55%); Dyke Road East (53%); Patcham and Hollingbury (47%); Dyke Road West (40%). In 2011, we were the first council in the United Kingdom to introduce guidance for developers on including food-growing spaces when they build in our city. Our initiative recently won international recognition from the World Green Building Council. Whether by adding rooftop gardens or including balcony containers, space for residents to grow their own food can be included in many developments. Since our guidance was adopted, there has been a huge increase in the number of successful development proposals incorporating food-growing facilities – soaring from 1% to 38% |

Social enterprise shows way with food fit for a queen Anne Caborn @AnneCaborn

managed revenue stream, expanding from traditional night-class customers to include local (and regional) businesses seeking training space, and professional consultants, such as independent financial advisers and accountants, looking to run seminars. It developed staff to market room hire more actively, made changes to its website to make its room-hire offering look more professional, and stressing benefits such as wifi, good transport links, and free off-street parking. It also launched and developed additional resource to support a professional email marketing programme. The catering enterprise at The Bridge will also be a training route for local residents seeking employment in the local hospitality and catering sector. Jayne Ross, chief executive at The Bridge, said: “Obviously, our core work must come first and that is delivering courses and activities to our local community. “But if we can do this and provide our organisation with additional revenue to support that work - so much the better. Charities can’t sit back and wait for funding. They have to go out and seek it and that includes seeking it in new ways and from new areas.”

Doing good work isn’t enough these days. Which is why many charities are evolving social enterprises to find essential funds. What are the implications for other businesses in the city. At first glance, The Bridge in Lucraft Road, Brighton, is a typical community learning centre, supporting the local population with a mixture of skills, back-towork and leisure courses, coupled with work and training advice. It also has a little cafe and a row of computers where people can grab a coffee or a meal and access the internet. But behind the friendly reception, motivational posters and helpful leaflets, there beats a business heart. Like many charities today, it cannot simply rely on funding and donations to continue to make ends meet. To survive, it has to do business as well as do good. The Bridge is embarked upon a social enterprise programme. This includes a catering service, with a full-time catering manager who has previously run her own commercial catering business. Its most impressive success to date was catering for the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s formal opening last month of The Keep, the £19m historical resource centre located near Falmer. The “food from the bridge” business has been given its own branding as well as it’s own website. The aim is to offer business breakfasts in the cafe, lunches “delivered to your desk”, and event catering - anything from corporate functions to children’s parties, as well as wider range of food and refreshments as part of its room-hire programme. Reawakening Brighton’s Royal Estate: The facts

Inspiration: Rex Whistler’s painting of HRH the Prince Regent Awakening the Spirit of Brighton Our special report last week about a proposed £35 million masterplan for Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Estate outlined the urgent need for vital repairs and restoration work to its buildings and gardens. As part of the consultation, Brighton and Hove City Council has answered some of the questions, complaints and misconceptions that surround what is – and is not – being proposed.

■ “The gardens will be totally fenced off” This is the opposite of our intentions. We want to open up the Royal Pavilion Garden, not shut it off. The security needs we have identified are that we need to be able to secure the garden in very late hours or early morning to prevent the current levels of anti-social behaviour that cause damage to the Grade II listed garden.

■ “They will charge you to enter for events” Only occasionally. Large cultural, ticketed events we would like to hold will be held in the gardens encouraging more people to engage with its heritage. This will never be the default position and the estate will be open widely just as it currently is.

■ “They will charge you or visitors to enter the gardens daily” This is incorrect. The gardens will remain a free resource for both local communities and visitors to the city.

■ “They will demolish the Pavilion Gardens Café” Our thinking is that the best solution would be a visitor welcome centre, which would include a café. We met again with David Sewell and Friends of the Pavilion Garden Café to look at the options for a new building to house the café as part of planning for the future of the Royal Pavilion Estate. Consultation with the Sewell family is ongoing with the aim of reaching an agreed plan to improve visitor welcome and to preserve the estate’s future.

■ “At least three mature Elm trees (two Himalayan and one Jersey) will be cut down at the back of us bordering New Road”

■ “They will construct a building on New Road as a retail shop and another to house a café like the one at The Level” Early concepts include the consideration of a new visitor welcome building at the New Road entrance to the estate, which would include visitor facilities (toilets, bag and coat storage, ticketing, and a café facility that could be operated both indoors and outdoors. This would open up the estate, as we would like to give a more compelling sense of arrival to the more than 1.2 million visitors who come here year on year.

This is incorrect. No historic trees will be removed and we will be developing our plans to ensure no protected trees are affected, either on the surface or via their roots.

■ “The other consequence will be New Road will become the main gateway into the estate and they will fence off and close the other entrances”

■ “John Nash’s restoration

This is incorrect. Part of the vision is to have a better entrance, which truly welcomes people onto the estate from New Road. It also includes the preservation and use of all other entrances, as well as enabling us to restore, repair and maintain our Grade 1 and Grade 2 listed buildings.

in the 1980s and 1990s will be ruined in the cafe area” This is incorrect. The café area is not part of Nash’s work, nor was it part of any 1980s or 1990s restoration. We want to be more faithful to the Nash Regency design not less.

■ “Residents on lunch breaks, students and children will not be welcome unless they pay” The estate will be more welcoming and accessible to everyone so that more people will come and enjoy the gardens during school trips, on weekend visits or on lunch breaks. No one will have to pay.

■ “The Royal Pavilion Estate in effect will be privatised and controlled, ie the public won’t be welcome unless they pay” This is incorrect. Our aim is to open up the Estate to vastly improve on accessibility, as well as sustainability.

Gift from charity in memory of Albion fan killed in 9/11 attacks Richard Morris

A charity set up in memory of an Albion fan who was killed in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre has agreed to donate £17,000 to a disabled sports team. Robert Eaton was a popular Seagulls supporter who died in the September 11 attack in his adopted home of New York. His fellow Albion fans launched a charity in his name and the Robert Eaton Memorial Fund (REMF) has since raised more than £130,000 through a series of football matches, golf days, marathons, quiz nights and sponsored cycle rides. The money has been spent on a host of footballing projects, including AIDS and HIV awareness schemes in Africa, as well as being used to provide funding for junior clubs across Sussex, South London and New York. Last year, the charity gave £30,000 to the Seagulls’ charitable wing, Albion in the Community, to pay for a specialist minibus kitted out for wheelchair-users and young

people with disabilities. This week the REMF announced it had agreed a two-year sponsorship package with Brighton and Hove Albion Powerchair team committing £8,500 a year to the club. The money will help fund coaching, travel, kit and affiliation costs associated with the running of the team, which competes in the WFA Premier League. Brighton and Hove Albion Powerchair Football Club offers wheelchair-users the chance to compete at a national level and the team has two training sessions a week. The squad was promoted from the WFA National League last season and earlier this year one of its players, Matt Francis, was invited to take part in an England training camp at St George’s Park. As part of the deal players will wear the REMF logo on their team tracksuits and polo shirts and the charity’s logo will also appear on the back of the players’ game chairs. The REMF has also agreed a £500 donation to St Gertrudes FC, a

The Tower by Simon Toyne For years, as a ghoulish teenager, I was fascinated by accounts of the plague (don’t ask!) - and I found myself remembering all the gory details that I used to read with spellbound horror as I read this book. Substitute the plague with “the blight” and the effect is the same. Cataclysmic. Devastating. With no cure. Or is there? What causes it? Is it some sort of divine retribution for the pretty appalling behaviour of mankind? Will there be a saviour that redeems us all? This is a perfect book for the Christmas sceptics among us - a sort of alternative Christmas message. You can also learn what a Googolplex is. And I’m still not

sure if the ultimate computer spyware CARBON is real or not. The ancient city of Ruin in Turkey opens its gates for the first time. But why now? This best-seller has everything you could possibly want in it: conspiracy theories, salvation, NASA, love, and an FBI agent, Joe Shepherd (any coincidence that he’s called Joseph? And the last name is, well, you all know what shepherds did while watching their flocks in the carol?). I think not. Toyne is a Brighton author and a best-seller. And in this book - with its global reach, sheer excitement and dazzling plot - you can absolutely see why. Great stuff. An Independent View Devil is in the detail; divinity is in the dream å @BrightonIndy Democracy in action: Congrats to all involved, attending, and speaking at @UnchainMotorist event. This is what we tweeted on Tuesday night. The occasion was the first public meeting of Unchain the Motorist, the grassroots campaign for a more coherent, more consensual transport policy. More than 60 people attended; another 60 want to if space at the Pub du Vin had allowed. This column, however, is not yet another contribution to the debate that still rages about speed limits, or parking charges, or bus lanes and cycle lanes. No. This is an opportunity for Brighton & Hove Independent to make a straightforward observation on the nature of democratic politics in our city. And, on this, our position is clear; the clue is in the masthead. Tuesday’s event was characterised by intelligent, informed and civilised debate, involving people with sharplycontrasting opinions. It was attended by leading figures in all the main political parties. Jason Kitcat, the leader of the Greenled city council, deserves particular mention for entering the lion’s den and listening to - and engaging with - the views of his minority adminstration’s harshest critics. This is what democratic politics should be about.

Unfortunately, it happens too infrequently - and, often, too late. Too often, such engagmeent occurs only when passions are high. When lines in the sand have been drawn... when pebbles are being cast. The devil is in the detail: Which roads should be 20mph? How high should charges be - and when should they be reduced, and by how much? Why do we need so many bus lanes and cycle lanes - and why for so much of the day and night? The divinity, however, is in the dream: What sort of city do we want to live in - and how do we change our behaviour to create that city that currently exist only in our dreams? We want a city in which fewer children are knocked down and injured or killed. Road signs alone cannot do that; introduction of a 20mph zone to replace a 30mph zone reduces averages speeds by only one mile an hour. We need more. We don’t want a city in which the poor are priced out of car parks - especially when they are not being priced in to public transport. We need better. The South Downs National Park is a national treasure. But park-and-ride sites - even in the green belt - could, in the long term, be a sustainable city resource. We need them now.

It has all got a bit messy at the Albion – but we owe a debt to Dick Albion legend Dick Knight has been hitting the headlines since the release of his book Mad Man last week. RICHARD MORRIS gives his thoughts on the man, the book, and the subsequent fall-out. As the man behind a catalogue of award-winning and edgy ad campaigns - including the infamous “Hello Boys” Wonderbra posters - Dick Knight knows better than most how to put a cat among the pigeons. Or, in this case, seagulls. By including a voucher for fans to signal their interest in snapping up his suddenly-for-sale shares in his book, he must have known it would spark debate and polarise opinion. Some Seagulls fans have hailed his declaration that he wants fans to retain a voice in the club, while others have written it off as a littlemore than a PR stunt designed to stimulate interest in his book and ruffle a few feathers at Albion HQ. He is considering selling shares at £1 a pop. But he says it isn’t about making money. Having invested more than £2 million in the club to help keep it afloat, Mr Knight was given just £400,000 in the deal that saw him replaced as chairman. Even if he sells all one million shares, he will still be out of pocket, in that respect. Nevertheless, fellow shareholder Derek Chapman voiced his surprise at the fact that Mr Knight appeared to want a return on his cash - saying others who gave similar amounts had no such ambitions. Sections of the Seagulls support have leapt to the former chairman’s defence. It has all got a bit messy. And unnecessarily so. Mischief-making, moneyspinning PR stunt, or heartfelt offer to give supporters a say in the club they fought so hard to save?

The truth, as it so often does, rests probably somewhere in the middle. Much of the criticism directed at Mr Knight seem to be based on a number of sensational extracts reproduced in the The Argus - all scooped, as it happens, by the Albion’s excellent fanzine, The Seagull Love Review, which carried the first official snippets - and the idea he fell out with current owner Tony Bloom over the nature of the handover of power. But, to someone who has read the book, Mr Knight doesn’t seem half as bitter as some supporters appear to think he is, based on the media titbits. For years, he was the voice of the fans. He fought to save the club. He fought to bring it back to

Brighton. And then, finally - and most triumphantly - he fought to provide it with a new home. It is crying shame that he and Mr Bloom appear no longer to enjoy a particularly good relationship. Without either of them, the Albion, as we know it, would not exist. It would be nicer for supporters if everyone just got along. But if there is one man in Sussex who deserves some time in the limelight, some praise and some appreciation, it is surely Dick Knight; his nomination as a potential freeman of the city is an appropriate gesture. So, as an Albion fan, I want to say just one thing: “Thank you, Dick Knight. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

A major victory for common sense was achieved at the Pub du Vin in Ship Street =on Tuesday. In a meeting to discuss Brighton and Hove’s transport policy, all political parties agreed to cast aside their differences and focus on what was good for the city. The Unchain the Motorist campaign, which organised Tuesday’s meeting, has been running for just eight weeks. And, in that time, has gathered support from all quarters. In a bid to negotiate some compromise between idealism and reality - or environment and economy - I presented the business case in its greenest terms. Many of the businesses in Brighton want to do the right thing for the environment. But not to the detriment of their businesses. That would be foolish. We need to recognise that the world won’t change overnight. So we have to work toward the “green” ideal. Footfall in the city centre fell by 11.3% this year, due to people staying at home in their droves. This will lead to a further increase in shop vacancies next year. This will put people out of work and families into poverty. The economy is picking up in the rest of the United Kingdom. So, if we sink back into recession in Brighton, we will be on our own. It will be a local recession and - unlike the global recession - it will affect independents more than multiples. This could threaten the city’s unique selling point - its unique independent shops. This is the first time Brighton has fallen below the national average, including the bad years of recession. People turning to the internet could account for a drop in footfall of 3%; the other 8% is due to local influences. Sadly, word has got out that it is prohibitively expensive to come to Brighton because of the cost of

parking and dearth of affordable alternatives. Brighton has also become one of most sluggish cities to travel around. It is now third behind London and Birmingham on the list of most congested towns and cities. We are not convinced that reducing speed limits to 20mph right across the city is the optimum solution to improving road safety. And there are certainly better ways to reduce carbon emissions. Furthermore, studies have shown that if traffic is held in a slow-moving queue for any length of time, nearly one in three journeys (30%) will be abandoned. That means 30% fewer car-loads of customers coming into the city centre at peak trading times. There is, however, a way to reduce emissions, improve road safety, reduce traffic, increase footfall and boost the economy. It’s not rocket science; it’s parkand-ride. There is plenty of research to show that park-and-ride works in every respect. Studies by the Deparmtent for Environment, Transport and the Regions have shown that for every 1,000 park-and-ride parking spaces, carbon emissions are reduced by 300 tonnes per year. Every 1,000 spaces delivers an additional £1.77 million spend into the local economy; road accidents are reduced, as a result of fewer cars trawling the streets in search of parking spaces; park-and-ride would deliver an additional 44,312 visitors a year to Brighton - and a net reduction in vehicle movements of 754,392. According to statistics, one of the most dangerous pastimes in the United Kingdom is cycling. Fact! It hasn’t put me off, although I must admit to being a lot more safety-conscious. There are some pretty irresponsible road-users out there, both cyclists and motorists. When it comes to accidents, however, it is invariably the cyclist who comes off worst. That does not mean the motorist is always at fault; every day, we see irresponsible, nearsuicidal cyclists weaving in and out of traffic - in many cases, completely ignoring traffic lights. I find it incredible that there are not more accidents, which can be explained only by the evasive

accept we need all these wretched cycle lanes, which in many cases lull the cyclist into a false sense of security and actually cause accidents. I would, however, welcome a law being introduced to make it obligatory for all road-users to pass a test and to have proper insurance. This is surely just common sense and something that ought to be welcomed by all responsible road-users.

Sussex University says £500m growth plan will boost city economy Sussex University has announced a £500 million expansion plan that it says will boost the economy of Brighton and Hove. The university said it expected student numbers to grow from 13,000 to 18,000 by 2018. The five-year strategic plan - called Making the Future - includes a new campus masterplan that outlines a programme of building work. It incorporates a new science block and more student housing at the Falmer campus. The university said that its strategic plan was intended to increase the global impact of its research activities and highcalibre graduates. The plan sets out goals for: teaching, learning and the student experience; research and knowledge exchange; campus development; engagement with the community; economic and social impact; and operating sustainably.

Michael Farthing, the university’s vice-chancellor, said that as the university grew, so would the economy of Brighton and Hove, Sussex, and beyond. According to new research to be published this month by Oxford Economics, Sussex University already contributes £600 million to the British economy. And more than two-thirds of that money goes into the local economy. The university also supports jobs for more than 4,500 people across the southeast. This figure is expected to grow as the university expands. The growth in student numbers will mean more jobs and more custom for local businesses and services. It will also require new buildings and services, the university said. And the resulting link-ups with industry, technology and the creative arts around the world would bring even more business to the university’s neighbours.

Sussex said that it planned to increase its turnover to £300 million a year by 2018. It would use the rise in revenue, it said, to invest in further improvements to keep Sussex among the top 2% of universities in the world. The campus masterplan is due to be submitted for outline planning permission next month. It sets out the building programme that is intended to accommodate the growing numbers of students and staff. The £500 million investment plans over the next five to 10 years include: a new science block with state-of-the-art facilities to support research in areas such as genetics, drug discovery, neuroscience and ecology; more on-campus student flats to house 40 per cent of Sussex students; a potential new sports centre and extension of the library; and more environmentallysensitive buildings using green

The Hove Plinth: A unique platform for public sculpture on our seafront The Hove Plinth project was born following a chance encounter between civicallyminded Helmut Lusser and Peter Seddon, reader in arts practices and historiography at the University of Brighton while waiting in the queue at King Alfred’s Leisure Centre. From this brief but fruitful meeting, the idea of bringing contemporary sculpture to Hove has been quietly gathering momentum over two years under the leadership of Karin Janzon, of Hove Civic Society. SUSAN MacDONALD spoke to her about the hopes and inspiration behind the project.

The Hove Plinth will be a landmark on the seafront

plinth having its own artist-inresidence engaging with the local community and schools has been suggested and we love this idea. It would be the artist-inresidence’s responsibility to create links with interested parties and arrange a programme of community projects. Who is involved in sculpture working group? We are very lucky to have Peter and Jill Seddon on board, who both come with arts history backgrounds. They are also currently working on the Sussex arm of the National Recording Project, which is creating an inventory of all public sculptures

and monuments in Britain. Hazel Reeves, the local sculptor who previously worked at Sussex University in an international development unit, has a deep understanding of the issues at stake and a wealth of skills to draw upon. Helen Philips, a design teacher, is a great help with many of the practical aspects of the project, including the fundraising. This is how

things stand at the moment, but we will be looking to widen the group further down the line.

Homebase provides helping hand with starter-packs for homeless people living in containers Homebase is helping a five-year community initiative in Brighton whereby former homeless men and women will be housed in converted shipping containers. The retailer, which has used shipping containers in its advertisements, is supporting Brighton Housing Trust (BHT) and developers QED Property Ltd, by providing starterpacks for the 36 residents who will be moving into the temporary accommodation on Monday, December 9. The starter-packs include beds, wardrobes, chests of drawers, bedside cabinets, and kitchen and other household equipment. Andy Winter, BHT chief executive, said: “These are more than shipping containers; they have been converted into housing, and - with the support

of Homebase - these houses are being converted into homes. “Thirty-six men and women are having their homes furnished and equipped to a high standard. “The focus on this development to date has been on the shell provided by the shipping containers. We can now focus on the experience of our tenants who will be getting their own homes. It is an amazing thing that is being

of street homeless people in the city has increased from 37 in November 2011 to 43 in November 2012. New scrap metal laws

A major new exhibition at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery next year will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One. War Stories: Voices from the First World War, will run from July 2014 until March the following year.

It is a collaboration between George Ravenscroft, with a 15-year career in film production, and Tom Bailey, a creative producer bestknown most recently for his success with the Brighton Digital Festival. Georgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s varied career includes everything from directing childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s television for Nickelodeon, to filming ground-breaking images of skin-cell growth for The Blond McIndoe Research Foundation. He has written and directed award-winning short films, as well as commercial work for clients such as Duracell and BT. Last year, he directed a documentary charting the Paralympic movement to coincide with London2012. Tom has toured large-scale shows around the world, entertaining audiences in Sydney, Singapore, Toronto, across continental Europe and the United Kingdom. Specialist “keyhole” surgery unit at the Montefiore Hospital

Prince Regent Swimming Complex improvement works on track

Patients at the Montefiore Hospital can benefit from some of the latest surgical techniques thanks to a group of surgeons who have set up the Sussex Centre of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery. This type of surgery, which is also known as minimally invasive or keyhole, typically means patients recover more quickly and spend less time in hospital than after traditional “open” surgery, as Mr Jim English consultant surgeon at the Montefiore Hospital explains: “During a minimally invasive procedure, the surgeon operates inside the body without having to create a large opening. A device called a laparoscope, consisting of a minute camera and a light, is inserted into the body through a tiny incision. This relays images to a television monitor in the operating theatre, providing the surgeon with a detailed internal view. The operation can then be carried out using surgical instruments which are inserted through separate incisions, or ‘keyholes’. “These incisions are usually less than 10mm long and heal

much more quickly than a single larger one. Patients feel less pain after the operation and have less scarring, both internally as well as externally. The risks of haemorrhage and infection are also reduced.” Thanks to advances in technology and surgical skill, more and more abdominal surgery can be carried out using minimally invasive techniques. Common procedures now include removal of appendixes and gall bladders, gynaecological investigations and treatments, bowel and bladder surgery. Certain types of cancers can also be operated on using laparoscopic surgery. The Sussex Centre for Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery consists of a number of consultant surgeons and their teams, including Mr James English and Miss Jenny Lo who specialise in Gynaecology; Mr Jeremy Clark, Mr Marc Lamah and Mr Etienne Moore who specialise in General Surgery; and Mr Tim Larner, specialising in Urology. Mr English said: “Many of us have worked together in teams for some time and we all are

committed to the provision of the highest quality minimally invasive surgery possible. The Montefiore hospital has three fully-integrated laparoscopic operating theatres which provide us with some of the finest facilities in the country. “Although laparoscopic procedures usually take a bit longer than open ones, patients don’t need to spend as long in hospital after their operation – very often they can be discharged on the following or even the same day. “We hope that the Centre of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery will inspire confidence in patients and their GPs that everyone referred to the facility will receive the most appropriate and least invasive treatment possible.”

Work is underway to improve facilities at the Prince Regent Swimming Complex, operated by Freedom Leisure. Brighton and Hove City Council has invested £250,000 to improve the standard of the facilities in order to provide a better experience for all. Refurbishment work began on October 7 and is on track for the Christmas completion date. Gym users will benefit from brand new changing rooms including new showers and toilets; the reception area is being totally remodelled to increase space and allow room for a refreshment area so customers can relax after their workout. The works will also see the centre become more environmentally friendly with the installation of new energy efficient lighting. Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, chair of the Economic Development and Culture Committee said: “The investment made by the council demonstrates our

continued commitment to improving the city’s sports facilities. I am pleased that our partners, Freedom Leisure, have been able to work with the public to keep the Prince Regent open while the improvements are being made. I am sure they will be greatly appreciated when completed.” Freedom Leisure centre manager Jon Hodgson said: “The project is progressing well and we are starting to see the new and improved facilities taking shape. This investment will make a big difference to customer experience and we would like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding, we are doing all we can to minimise disruption while these important improvements are made.” The centre will remain open throughout the refurbishment; although a temporary reception area has been created. The dry-side changing areas will remain closed for the duration of the project.

It was National Freelancers Day yesterday (Thursday), an annual event that brings together and celebrates the nation’s freelance workforce. Brighton and Hove - being the bastion of art, culture and technology that it is - has its fair share of freelancers roaming the streets. You may even be friends with one of these creatures, these people who exist in some ethereal world where regular work patterns don’t exist. The thing is, these people have a huge role to play in the health of the city economy. For a start, freelancing offers an alternative to those who cannot find work. It’s no secret that getting a job in this city has been hard over the last few years, both for graduates and those with experience. So, what’s a person with skills and education to do? They can go it alone.

The soon-to-be opened pop-up Kollectiv Gallery, which will offer artists a place to exhibit their work, is a prime example of freelancers working hard for themselves, while creating something that benefits Brighton as a whole. Freelancers are a diverse bunch. They range from web designers to accountants, from java developers to illustrators.

All in all, they’ve taken a risk to work for themselves while helping to bolster the economy. So, here’s to freelancers. Go buy them a pint, or maybe a glutenfree soy milkshake. This is Brighton after all.

Nestled away on Ship Street lies a great new pizza restaurant. Open only a few short months, Pizza 7 prides itself on a some great characteristics, including an Italian organic wood-fired oven and over 60 (yes, 60!) beers to choose from. The first thing that struck me upon arriving at Pizza 7 was how vast the establishment is. From the outside, the premises looks no bigger than your average living room. But after diving out of the

rain and into the warm glow of the restaurant, I was surprised to find that tables stretch far back and you can choose to sit next to the oven if you so wish. A lot of care and attention has gone into making Pizza 7 a warm and inviting place to spend an evening - and I instantly felt relaxed and accommodated for in my surroundings. Decor is kept modern, with metallic chairs and wooden tables dotted around the restaurant. Quenching my thirst was a priority and browsing the wine list led me to discover a wellthought-out yet broad selection of vino to choose from. I decided to opt for a simple 2012 Sauvignon Blanc (£4.10). The real alcohol trick up Pizza 7’s sleeve is that it boasts a mighty fine selection of local and international beers, including bottles from Belgium, Scotland, Germany, Hawaii, Laos, France and Norway. The menu in Pizza 7 is short, clear, and to the point. With seven different pizza’s on offer, they also provide a small tapas and light bites selection that includes

sItalian-tinged delights such as Bruschetta and Pork Rillette. If you’re after anything other than pizza, however, you’ll find it challenging to satisfy your desire - as pizza is the name and quite clearly also the game. My affection for the combination of chicken and tarragon prompted me to order the Slow-roasted Chicken, Tarragon, Roasted Peppers and Rocket pizza (£9.25), along with another glass of white wine. It’s worth mentioning that Pizza 7 form their dough from a secret sourdoughbased recipe and each base is made fresh every day. Child protection and action against child exploitation are top of the agenda for R e s p o n s i b l e Tr a v e l . c o m , according to Krissy Roe, product manager for the Brighton-based company. “We’re running a campaign on orphanage volunteering and the need for change in the industry. There’s lots of evidence to show that orphanage tourism is doing more harm than good,” Ms Roe said. ResponsibleTravel.com was launched in 2001 by Justin Francis - with backing from Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop. It has since become a market-leading proponent

of sustainable and ethicallyresponsible international tourism. “In places like Cambodia, there’s been a rise in fake orphans, so three out of four children in orphanages in Cambodia aren’t actually orphans; they have one or more parents still alive. In Ghana, it’s 90%. “So what’s happening is that people are opening orphanages and using volunteers - and the time and money that they bring to fuel this business. And children are being used as a commodity at the centre of it all.” In July, the company suspended 10 of its trips that involved volunteering with orphanages. In August and September, it worked with ECPAT UK, a nongovernmental organisation that aims at preventing child exploitation, Save the Children, Friends International, and

With this in mind, it’s important to have a plan of action to increase your cardiorespiratory fitness and decrease those running times. A crucial aspect of your plan should be your stretching protocol. By introducing a regular stretching session into your training plan your “tight” muscles will increase in length - which will relax any excess pressure on your joints. The most common musclegroup to become tight are the hamstrings (the muscles at the back of the leg). Lower-back pain can be experienced from the

shortening of the hamstrings. When running, the hamstrings are under constant tension; thus, it is imperative to stretch, stretch and stretch again. The following exercises can all be done from the comfort of living room, before you enter the cool Brighton streets for the real thing. To begin with, introduce these stretches before and after you run, each stretch should last for 30 seconds. ■ Hamstring stretch with towel – Lying on your back with one leg bent/straight. The towel is around the ball of the foot, with both hands holding the towel. The leg with the towel is straight and gently lifted towards the body. Both hips are always in contact with the floor. ■ Hip flexor – Kneel with one

knee on the floor and the other foot in front with the knee bent. Push your hips forward and keep the back upright. Lift the arm of the side on which the knee is on the floor and rotate towards the front knee. ■ Gluteal stretch – With one leg bent across the body at 90 degress, the back leg is straight. Lean forward onto your forearms ensuring the ankle and knee are level.

Nissan GT-R Nismo 2013: first official pictures The new Nissan GT-R Nismo, is a fettled and powered-up version of Japan’s giantkilling super-coupe. Like Porsche’s GT3 and Ferrari’s 458 Speciale, the recipe for the GT-R Nismo has been to add power, strip weight and improve aerodynamics. The price has been tweaked too: from £76,610 to over £120,000. What does your extra £45k buy you? Read on for the full story.

How much more power does the Nissan GT-R Nismo have? The car’s 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 runs higher boost pressure, a high-pressure fuel pump, and larger diameter turbochargers from Nissan’s GT500 GT-R racing car. The alterations hike power from the standard car’s 542bhp up to 592bhp. Torque rises by 20lb ft, to 480lb ft. Confirmed performance figures have not been announced, but the Nismo GT-R is expected to hit 62mph in around 2.5sec. Despite the aero bodykit, Nissan claims the car’s drag coefficient is the same as the standard car, so the top speed of 197mph should be safe.

Seagulls skipper Gordon Greer made his long-awaited Scotland debut during the 0:0 draw with USA and followed it up with an equally-impressive turn in his country’s 1:0 win in Norway. At 32 Greer was the oldest Scottish debutant since the 1960s and, considering his form at the Albion since arriving from Swindon Town, it was a long

overdue international bow. Last season the Albion kept 12 clean sheets in games in which Greer started and he has already clocked up another half dozen in his 15 outings this term – including a pair of blanks away to highly-fancied QPR and Reading. And his individual numbers make encouraging reading. He has made 20 tackles, 22 interceptions, 101 clearances, nine blocks and boasts a pass completion rate of 84.2 per cent from his mammoth 872 attempted passes (an average

of 58 a game). Of his 177 long balls, 104 have been accurate while he also has five key passes and a single assist. Greer has been beaten just ten times by a dribbling opponent but has given away 25 fouls, collecting two yellow cards and conceding a penalty. The defender has also won only 24 of his 42 aerial battles this season. Nevertheless, alongside Matthew Upson, Greer is providing Oscar Garcia with a very solid base.

Brighton could be boosted by the return of their chief creative force at some stage during their match with Wigan. Andrea Orlandi has managed just 45 minutes for the Seagulls since aggravating his knee in the opening day defeat at Leeds and Oscar Garcia’s charges have struggled to unlock defences in his absence. The attacking midfield player topped the charts for the Albion last season in terms of assists with 11 set-ups, with Will Buckley second with eight and defensive midfield linchpin Liam Bridcutt was third with six. All three have missed significant chunks of the season so far, leaving the Albion without much of the attacking influence enjoyed by Gus Poyet last season. Many of the long-term absentees are now returning to the fold, with Orlandi back in training during the international break.
