CITY COUNCIL Sun sets on the terraces ENERGY BILLS TO PLUMMET Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Energy bills incurred by Brighton and Hove City Council are in line to fall by nearly 30% this year. Figures obtained by Brighton & Hove Independent reveal that the total bill - for electricity, gas, and streetlighting - could fall from £4.2 million to just over £3 mllion. The figures - which include all council buildings, but exclude schools - have been obtained after a request under the Freedom of Information Act. They compare bills for each of the last two years with those for the first half of 2013-2014. Specifically, they cover “general fund” expenditure, which relates to all electricity and gas spend across the council - excluding figures for streetlighting and the Housing Revenue Account (HRA), which are shown separately. The figures imply that
for electricity, general fund expenditure could fall by as much as 17%, from £1,600,979 last year; for HRA, it could drop by 28%, from £567,236; and for streetlighting, it could decrease by 16%, from £896,949. For gas, general fund expenditure could fall by as much as 65%, from £607,665 last year; for HRA, it could drop by 46%, from £594,750 . It should be noted that expenditure within the HRA relates to council housing and most of these costs are recovered from tenants and leaseholders through rents. A council spokesperson stressed that care must be taken in extrapolating >> Continued on page 16

Art of Aroe Msk goes global Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy You see him here. You see him there. In Brighton and Hove, you might see his work pretty much anywhere. To a passer-by, he is Aroe Msk. That is his signature. For Aroe is a graffiti artist - and possibly one of our city’s most surprising “invisible exports”. Aged 43 and a father of five, he came to attention most recently when his work adorned - or, as one or two might say, defaced the new “container homes” for homeless people. Aroe began at 13. Three decades on, he is a global phenomenon; his work has appeared in Los
Angeles, Brazil, Colombia, Russia, Italy, France, Germany - “pretty much every country in Europe”. His work now sells for thousands of pounds; his most expensive so far was £12,000. Aroe explains: “What people don’t realise is that a lot of graffiti they see are adverts or have been done so they can be filmed, for a promotional video or whatever. I make a living out of the proceeds of graffiti. A good living.” He is passionate about his art - and equally passionate about people who misunderstand it, and the love that goes into it. “Brighton is one of the world leaders in this type of art,” says
Aroe, whose most prominent work can be seen in Kensington Street, Cheapside and the New England Quarter. You will be seeing a lot more of him; that’s for certain. For more information, www.aroemsk.com

Foie gras protest heats up Animal welfare campaigners against the production and sale of foie gras are stepping up their protests in Brighton and Hove. They seek to raise awareness about the alleged cruelty to ducks and geese - and want the city to declare itself a foiegras-free area. Tomorrow afternoon (Saturday, 2.30pm - 4pm), they will take their protests to La Cave a Fromage in Western Road. Other targets have included The Gingerman restaurant in Norfolk Square, and La Maison, in East Street. Supporters of Compassion Brighton say they are meeting managers and chefs from local restaurants and “politely requesting they make the compassionate and ethical decision to remove foie gras from their menus”. Yossarian Robins, a spokesperson for the group,
One protester dressed as “Dora the Duck” to make her point at The Gingerman
said: “Our approach is always peaceful and friendly - and we encourage the establishments to join the many other premises in the UK that have taken the pledged not to serve foie gras, including Lords Cricket Ground, the All England Lawn Tennis Club, and the Houses of Parliament. Prince Charles has banned it from all royal menus.” Ms Robins claimed
significant successes - with Havana, Little Bay, The Stoneham, The Connaught and The Dyke agreeing immediately to remove it from their Christmas menus. The group says its supporters include Alex Phillips, the Green councillor for Goldsmid. A disease, not a delicacy, see page 15

Long-term planning is essential in caring for our elderly and disabled people Jason Kitcat @jasonkitcat
Councils are facing a double whammy of cuts in government funding combined with increasing demand for services as more of our residents get older. At the current rate, money to provide all other local services - such as education, housing, libraries, and parks - will run out. Social care services make up a third of the spending that we have control over. With mounting government cuts, we have little option but to look at ways of saving money within these areas. Over the past few years we have made small changes to social care services, mainly through consolidating care homes that have fewer people using them,
combine lesser-used residential and day centres - but still maintain the services themselves, albeit at different locations across the city. It goes without saying that any changes can be very difficult for vulnerable people, and it is not something that we undertake lightly. Unlike other councils, however, we are maintaining our eligibility criteria, meaning Social care services make up everyone who needs help will continue to a third of the spending we get it. The austerity have control over” consensus between instead going to the cinema or the Tories and Labour in Westminster means that it is bingo, for instance. It is great that people want to crucial that we do not just look participate in all that our city has to next year, but longer term to to offer. As a result, however, our protect these services. Only by services at day-care centres are making difficult organisational changes will our essential social being used less. So, under the draft budget care services be able to survive. proposals, we will continue to and supporting vulnerable people access activities that they want to do around the city. With the “personalisation” scheme, elderly and disabled people are able to choose from a range of activities they would like to do with their allocated budget. This means that fewer are choosing to come to formal council-run day-care centres –

More roads to stay at 30mph as councillors agree ‘Phase 2’ Frank le Duc @BHcitynews Most of Brighton and West Hove will have a 20mph speed limit after a vote by councillors. But Conservative and Labour members united to force the Green-led council to exempt important roads that are heavily used by buses and taxis. Speed limit orders will be advertised shortly, giving objectors one last chance to raise concerns. The final sign-off for the second phase of the three-phase scheme is expected to be in March. The first phase went live in April, when the 20mph limit came into force throughout much of central Brighton and Hove. The extended area covers most of the suburbs, from Portslade in the west to Moulsecoomb and Whitehawk in the east and Patcham in the north. Among the roads removed from the scheme by opposition
councillors were: ■ Portland Road in Hove, which remains at 30mph pending further monitoring; ■ Stanford Avenue and Preston Drove, which will also stay at 30mph; ■ A large part of Hollingbury - bounded by and including Ditchling Road, Surrenden Road, Braybon Avenue and Carden Avenue – about which a decision was deferred indefinitely. As a result, they all retain a 30mph speed limit for the foreseeable future. The council conducted a survey of 58,000 homes in nine areas of the city earlier this year. Nearly 15,000 people responded to the consultation with 51 per cent supporting the proposed reduction of the speed limit to 20mph. A deputation to the meeting urged councillors to include streets around Hove Park and Hove Recreation Ground, but it was rejected.
Find out where your neighbours stand on 20mph compromise A street-by-street analysis of where people stand on 20mph has been obtained by Brighton & Hove Independent. The 34-page document which this newspaper is making available online today - provides a fascinating insight into the debate that has raged across the city. It analyses the number of properties, number of responses and the response rate in each street or road in the nine areas encompassed in Phase 2 of the 20mph scheme. It also details the number of people supporting or opposing the 20mph in the street where they live. Even though more than 15,000 people took part in the consultation, the verdict of a vast number of streets came down to only a handful of “votes”. Full details can be found by visiting: brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk Separately, the figures for some of the roads that were exempted, as a result of Labour
and Conservative opposition, are: ■ Portland Road: 728 properties; 135 responses (18.5%) - 48 (36%) in favour of 20 mph in street; 87 against (64%); ■ Stanford Avenue: 365 properties; 70 responses (19.2%) - 34 (48.5%) in favour; 36 (51.4%) against; ■ Preston Drove: 259 properties; 59 responses (22.8%) - 28 (47.5%) in favour; 31 (52.5%) against; ■ Braybon Avenue (the part in Patcham and Hollingbury area) 78 properties; 36 responses (46.2%) - 20 (55.6%) in favour; 16 (44.4%) against; ■ Surrenden Road (the part in Patcham and Hollingbury area) 41 properties; 16 responses (39%) - 6 (37.5%) in favour; 10 (62.5%) against; ■ Surrenden Road (the part in Preston area) 179 properties; 70 responses (39.1%) - 40 (57.1%) in favour; 30 (42.9%) against. That’s good news! The Argus will try to look on the bright side of life Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy The Argus newspaper has promised to turn over a new leaf. Its New Year’s resolution is to try to start looking on the bright side of life. Heaven knows, it can be miserable. The newspaper, which used to sell 100,000 copies a day,
but now sells fewer than 6,000 in Brighton and Hove - is famous for its depressing diet of drink, drugs, crime, arrests, violence, traffic chaos, and road accidents. From January 7 that will change. A little. The Argus is promising a “That’s Good News” campaign with at least two articles every day that are uplifting. It will be supported by a Twitter hashtag.
The good news was announced by John Keenan, the newspaper’s ever-cheerful business editor, at a meeting of the Brighton and Hove Economic Partnership. What the new campaign logo could look like

Mandela’s peaceful transition came at a terrible price to the people of South Africa Jean Calder @jeancalder101
respect for achieving relatively peaceful transition, but it was bought at a terrible price. The people who had struggled on the streets and in their workplaces got the vote. But they didn’t get justice or equality. People like the Mandelas, relatively privileged members of the Thembu royal family, did well. Many ANC leaders joined an increasingly-privileged black middle and upper class. As Archbishop Tutu famously said, they “stopped the gravy train just long enough to get on it”. The price of not frightening whites was to go easy on justice and insist upon “reconciliation”. Parents who had seen their children imprisoned, tortured and killed were expected to forgive - while politics became mired in corruption. People who had lived in slums under apartheid continued to live like this under the ANC. Black education remained terrible. Women who had been beaten and abused under apartheid found they were raped even more under democracy. Archbishop Tutu spoke out for women, but
In his posthumous letter, the great ANC leader Walter Sisulu called Nelson Mandela a “beacon of hope to the world”. And so he was. But people can’t eat hope. Hope won’t provide a roof over their heads, keep them warm in winter, or save them from rape or homicide. It’s probable that the 50 people a day who are murdered in South Africa and the half-million raped each year, were all once full of hope. It didn’t do them much good. It is time we curbed the ‘crack cocaine’ of gambling Emma Daniel @huxley06
There has been increasing media attention in recent months on what are called fixed-odds betting terminals, or FOBTs. Over recent years, these machines have been springing up in bookmakers and betting shops across the country. In Brighton and Hove, we already have 173 machines in betting shops. For those who do not know, these machines offer the gamer a chance to place an eye-wateringly high bet of £100 on a roulette spin or other games every 20 seconds, with the terminals accepting credit and debit cards. Research commissioned by the London Borough of Newham found more than half of regular FOBT-players gambled until all their money was gone - and nearly 90% of them found the machines addictive. These machines are having a harmful impact on our communities; it is understood more than 100 FOBTs are smashed up in betting shops each week. Like many forms of gambling, it is suspected that FOBT use is highest within vulnerable and deprived communities. What is more, a recent Guardian investigation has also shown instances of FOBTs being used to launder drug money. Therefore, it is not hard to see why FOBTs have been labelled the “crack cocaine” of gambling and why many now
feel action has to be taken to stop this worrying trend. Last week the Labour Party brought this issue to parliament, urging the government to take action to reduce the maximum stakes on these machines to £2. The previous Labour government ensured existing legislation could be used to reduce the stakes in FOBTs, but the proposals were defeated by the Tory-led government - despite the support of a number of rebel Conservative MPs. As Matt Zarb Cousin, from the Campaign for Fairer Gambling, which is leading the fight against these machines, has said: “There is mounting empirical evidence that suggests these machines are the most addictive form of gambling, so it is time for the government to bring these machines into line with all other gaming machines in Britain by reducing the maximum stake to £2.” I am really concerned about the impact FOBTs are having in Brighton and Hove, risking vulnerable people getting into debt, with crime and anti-social behaviour escalating in the city as a result of these machines. When Labour-led Liverpool City Council passed a similar motion last month, councillors heard how residents had been forced to turn to loan sharks to pay the bills after losing all their money on FOBTS. That is why I am calling on our council to do everything it can to explore what powers we have legally to restrict these machines locally. And that is why I and
my Labour colleagues yesterday (Thursday) pressed the council to join the campaign to take urgent action against FOBTs.

Smartphone help for city’s walkers Six of Brighton and Hove’s most popular walks are now available to view by smartphone. JourneyOn Mobile, the city’s real-time journey information provider, is providing the new format to make accessing mapped city-centre walks and countryside trails easier and to encourage more people to walk. To make each route easy to navigate, interactive on-screen pop-ups - with historic facts and photos of recognisable landmarks - will be highlighted on digital maps throughout the journey. Since its launch in 2011, JourneyOn Mobile has grown in popularity; more than 40%
of users now access the service via their smartphone to plan a journey and get up-todate travel information while they’re on the move. Councillor Ian Davey, the lead member for transport, said: “There are some really special walks and trails in Brighton and Hove and we hope this touch-ofa-button format will encourage more people to get out there and explore their local area.”

A messy compromise It is all over by Christmas. Peace has broken out in the debate about 20mph speed limits in Brighton and Hove. It may be only a ceasefire. But let’s enjoy it while we can. There is no doubt it is a somewhat messy compromise. But then that is what local democracy so often is. There is a lot credit for all concerned. Nobody can doubt the motives behind the strategy. As Chris Hawtree, a Green councillor, said on Wednesday: “It’s not often we get to discuss matters of life and death.” Apart from die-hard campaigners, few can doubt that the Labour and Conservative amendments to the Phase 2 proposals were, at the least, reasonable. There are, of course, lessons to be learned. Not least in how to conduct a consultation – which is not the same as a plebiscite or a referendum.
It is an achievement to have engaged 15,000 citizens, but it might have been wiser to have made clear from the beginning how the results were to be interpreted. It is no surprise that people “voted” for 20mph in their own street, but not in the wider area around them. Collective decisions are always a mix of personal selfinterest and the common good. And it’s not easy for decisionmakers to differentiate between the two. For the time being, though, the arguments are over. It is for the rest of us now to change our behaviour. Regardless of the signs at the side of the road, it is our responsiblity to drive more carefully, more safely, and whenever necessary - more slowly. For drivers, driving is always a matter of life and death. Potentially.
Seven Dials celebrates The Brighton & Hove Inependent would like to pass on its best wishes to the people and businesses of Seven Dials. They have suffered a lot in recent months: the battlefield for elm trees under threat made way for the devastation caused by lengthy roadworks. But all that is now behind us. The community spirit of the area is to be admired. The campaign to save Exeter Street
Hall is typical. The moment of rebirth is upon us on Wednesday. Let’s congratulate the people behind next week’s celebrations - see the article on the adjoining page - and wish them well in the future. More importantly, let’s replicate that spirit in neighbourhoods of all kinds across the city.

We have become unhealthily dependent on technology Graham Chainey
The other day, I witnessed something I had been hoping to see for some time: two pedestrians, both busy texting while they walked down St James’s Street, collided with one another. I sometimes have the feeling I have woken up in some bizarre future age, where everybody has been zombified. Nobody seems capable of being anywhere or doing anything without the ubiquitous gadget in the hand. You see them on buses and trains, hunched over their little lit screens and with wires in their ears. Passengers no longer look out of the windows at the scenery they are passing through. You share the lift with people you know, but there’s no chance of any human interchange any more, because they are wrapped in their virtual worlds, frantically thumbing tiny buttons. As I stroll on the Brighton Pier or the prom, I notice that about 90% of the other people are using phones to text, talk, or take photographs. Even at night, when conditions are scarcely suitable for photography, they are busy recording the scene or taking “selfies”. Modern technology may be wonderful, within limits. But we have allowed ourselves to become addicts. We can no longer go five minutes without some mindless and utterly trivial communication. We get withdrawal symptoms if we are deprived of the millions of banal tweets and social networking comments that are posted every second. We’ve become junkies, needing constant e-fixes. Our attention spans have shrivelled. We can no longer concentrate on anything real for more than a few minutes before we need to check whether we have received mail - or whether some
Technology may be wonderful, but it must have limits (Photograph: flickrJhaymesisviphotography)
celebrity we are following has tweeted. Above all, we no longer live in the real world, in real time. We no longer experience life directly. Everything we do or feel or learn is channelled through electronic filters. Nothing is really real for us any more unless we have experienced it through an illuminated screen. “Living? Our smartphones will do that for us,” as Villiers de L’Isle-Adam might nowadays have said. This is a form of soul sickness. According to a recent news report I saw, children as young as two are already using tablets and other gadgets. According to another, some primary school children no longer know how to use a pen, pencil or crayon. Another printed a picture of a small child at a zoo, yards from a lion, but more interested in her iPad, and with headphones clamped over her ears. No surprise that young people reportedly have become completely divorced from nature. That they no longer know how to play conkers or other typical childhood games. That they suffer from obesity and vitamin deficiency and depression. That childhood suicide rates are rising. That they no longer build up, through healthy pursuits and
vigorous interaction, what used to be known as “character”, that is, natural resilience and the ability to withstand the challenges and setbacks of human existence. As a general rule, all children should be taught traditional human skills before their technological equivalents. Face-to-face communication before Facebook. Handwriting before Word. Conkers before PlayStation. Mental arithmetic before calculators. Spelling before spellcheck or textspk. Letter-writing before email. Books before GoogleBook. How to use authoritative reference works before Wikipedia. Mapreading before Satnav. How to play a musical instrument before Spotify. Real-life relationships before online porn. And so on. Human beings managed to lead fulfilling lives for thousands of years before all this digitised stuff came along. But I fear for the future, if we do not learn to step back from it a bit. We need to rethink what we are doing. If we continue to use technology in this obsessive and imbalanced way, we shall be laying the seeds of terrible problems in future society.

Seven Dials is open for Christmas and business
After months of re-development, the roundabout will formally re-open
Seven Dials is getting ready to celebrate - not only Christmas, but also the re-opening of the infamous road junction. On Wednesday evening, there will be carol-singing and speeches. But the fun begins at 3pm with the start of the first Seven Dials Quiz, an innovative way of making Christmas shopping enjoyable. A total of 34 businesses have got together to organise the sixhour quiz trail. Each shop will have a poster in its window, with a single question relating to their business - and three possible answers. Winners are the ones who get most questions correct. Entry is free and there are some great prizes to be won: a hamper, organic essentials oils gift set, a large mirror, a newspaper of your choice delivered for one week, a bottle of Jack Daniels, Polish Vodka, Champagne, a haircut, two hair products, two Panettone, four coffee and bar snacks, two cakes, two lunches, flowers, toys or stationery, a Christmas ornament, dance lessons for children aged five to 18, a magnum of English sparkling wine, a barista training session, a basket of Craft Beer. And so it goes on. Quiz sheets should be picked up at Parkers Kitchens, where the questions start; participants are asked then to work down the east side of Dyke Road, diverting down Chatham Place and Prestonville Road, before continuing along Dyke Road. The last shop taking part is The Magazine Shop. Then shoppers are asked to cross over and work their way

Smartcards for UK citizens as well as immigrants could save time and money Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland
Here we go again with all the usual fears of being swamped by another wave of immigrants in the new year. This time, it is the Romanian and Bulgarian influx we are concerned about - and not without good cause, because we certainly do not have the infrastructure to accommodate them. As someone who spent the best part of a decade working with the refugee community, I have given a lot of thought to the problem and how we should be dealing with it. I am not against the free movement of people and, indeed, I believe it is one of our basic human rights to travel freely. What I am against is the constant knee-jerk response
This ought to be telling our politicians something. But I am not sure they are listening yet. I am not at all convinced that we have the strong leadership this country needs to deal with immigration. We don’t need to ban or regulate immigration; we simply need to manage it effectively. I do not believe it is a human right to come to the UK and freeload off the back of people who have paid into the We don’t need to ban or system all their lives. If you come here, you regulate immigration; we should expect to pay your way the same as need to manage it” the rest of us. There is no such thing as a free lunch. in after perhaps two years. It’s really not rocket science, What is abundantly obvious even to the most thick-skinned simply common sense. If we of politicians - is that we simply had a benefit-card system, the benefits entitlements would be cannot carry on as we are. In these days of high tech, it should surely be in everyone’s interest to issue benefit smartcards to all UK citizens and immigrants alike. The difference should be that there are no benefits until you have paid in sufficiently to receive them. Basic healthcare could start perhaps after paying into the system for a year, while other support might start to kick

signing on at doctor’s surgeries or hospitals. Cards would also inform emergency services as to your blood type and allergies to penicillin or other antibiotics. It would simplify police and emergency service procedures, save endless time and, consequently, be extremely costeffective. It would help control the spread of infectious diseases and would surely be a win-win situation. I am sick of wet politicians who are swayed by equally-wet, liberal anti-anything activists banging on about identity cards
and a Big Brother state. That idea might have washed with me 20 years ago, but these days it holds no credibility. The same woolly-eared wetties are no doubt using mobile phones that log every movement, tablets and computers that can tell Big Brother just about everything about the user, and televisions that are becoming the eye in our living room. Without doubt, we need to grasp the nettle. Yes, it may sting a little while we do so. But rather that than wait until the already-crowded beds are choked to death.

It gives a general right of access to all types of recorded information held by public authorities, including Brighton and Hove City Council. From February 2003, Brighton and Hove City Council has been required to adopt and maintain a publication scheme setting out the classes of information that it routinely publishes or intends to publish; the manner in which information in each class is published; whether the information is available to the public free of charge or on payment. Work in Progress Competition for Unpublished Writers The Book Doctor
Laura Lockington @bookloversupper
Being a writer is hard. Yes, yes not hard like being an emergency nurse, or digging roads for a living. But hard as in lonely, underpaid and undervalued in a society that measures success in terms of units sold. That’s why I was thrilled and delighted to be asked to be a judge for the 2014 Work in Progress Competition for Unpublished Writers. All unpublished writers deserve support and thanks to Myriad Editions, the Brighton-based independent publisher, they are going to get it. Myriad continues to do their bit for those unsung creatures, as
they are actively searching out literary talent. And, goodness knows, there’s an awful lot of that in our city. It is offering unpublished writers the chance to win a week’s writing retreat, with full board, in the luxurious surroundings of West Dean College, situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty six miles north of Chichester. The partnership between the publisher and college led to the discovery of best-selling author Elizabeth Haynes, the policeanalyst-turned-novelist who attended West Dean’s crimewriting course, and whose debut novel, Into the Darkest
Corner, became a word-of-mouth sensation when Myriad published it in 2011. Past winners of the Writer’s Retreat Competition include Lisa Cutts (2012), crime writer and author of Never Forget, published by Myriad earlier this year and recently-optioned by a major TV company. Myriad also publishes two previously short-listed entrants: Nina de la Mer (4 am and Layla, forthcoming in February) and Hannah Vincent (Alarm Girl, forthcoming in August next year). The competition, now in its fifth year, also offers up to six short-listed entrants the chance to receive feedback from industry experts. This year, the prize will be judged by: Lesley Thomson, author of The Detective’s Daughter
and A Kind of Vanishing, and course leader of West Dean’s MA in Creative Writing; Jonathan Kemp, award-winning author of London Triptych (Author’s Club Best First Novel) and Twentysix, and creative writing tutor at Birkbeck College, University of London; Laura Lockington, author of Capers in the Sauce, Stargazy Pie, Cupboard Love, The Cornish Affair and Before and After, and co-host of The Bookish Supper Society; Becky Thomas, literary agent at Fox Mason Agency; Candida Lacey, publisher and managing director, and Vicky Blunden, fiction editor, at Myriad Editions. Selected: 10 more of the best books for y 11 For the photographer Exposed by David Levine (iTunes); £9.99 Brighton photographer Levine is the man who shot the 1980s. From Boy George to Kylie Minogue, with many inbetween. He revolutionised the way that live gigs were shot, and this is the perfect book for any student of photography or lover of music. Peppered with technical information about cameras and littered with personal stories about the many stars he has shot, it’s a perfect treat of a present. An iTune gift certificate is a pretty cool present, too.
12 For the nostalgic Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee (Vintage Classics); £7.99 This is a wonderfully-vivid memoir of childhood in a remote Cotswold village, a village before electricity or cars, a timeless place on the verge of change. Growing up among the fields and woods and characters of the place, Laurie Lee depicts a world that is both immediate and real and belongs to a now-distant past. I defy anyone to read this and not long for a simpler life, and the carol-singing chapter always gets me in the festive mood. Totally charming.
13 For the novel-lover The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt (Little, Brown); £20 At last! She’s back. For the many legions of fans who adored The Secret History, Donna Tartt is back with a vengeance. Aged 13, Theo Decker - son of a devoted mother and a reckless, largely-absent father - survives an accident that otherwise tears his life apart. Alone and rudderless in New York, he is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. He is tormented by an unbearable longing for his mother – and, down the years, he clings to the thing that most reminds him of her. Totally absorbing.
14 For the lover of Brighton Brighton, The Graphic Novel (QueenSpark); £15.99 A fantastic graphic novel celebrating our city. Taking its inspiration from Bryan Talbot’s Alice in Sunderland, it uses the history of one of the country’s most infamous cities as its starting point. The result is a startlinglyoriginal and fascinating publication spanning more than 300 years, from the 1700s to present day. This is bang-on trend and will liven up all our ideas about the city we live in; it is guaranteed to please anyone who is lucky enough to receive it as a present this year.
15 For the lover of Jane Austen Sense & Sensibility by Joanna Trollope (HarperCollins); £18.99 Heresy! Treason! A re-write of Miss Austen? Good heavens! Two sisters could hardly be more different. Elinor Dashwood, an architecture student, values discretion above all. Her impulsive sister Marianne displays her creativity everywhere as she dreams of going to art school. But when the family finds itself forced out of Norland Park, their beloved home for 20 years, their values are severely put to the test. Can Elinor remain stoical, knowing that the man she likes has been ensnared by another girl? Will Marianne’s faith in love be shaken by meeting the hottest boy in the county? And when social media is the controlling force at play, can love ever triumph over conventions and disapproval? Joanna Trollope casts Sense & Sensibility in a fresh new light, re-telling a coming-of-age story about young love and heartbreak, and how when it comes to money especially, some things never change.

you to give this Christmas 16 For the theorist The Sancti Trilogy by Simon Toyne (HarperCollins); £18.99 for three-book set
Brighton best-seller Simon Toyne will satisfy the most ardent of conspiracy theorists. The certainties of the modern world are about to be blown apart by a 3,000-year-old conspiracy nurtured by blood and lies. A man throws himself to his death from the oldest inhabited place on the face of the earth, a mountainous citadel in the historic Turkish city of Ruin. This is no ordinary suicide; it is a symbolic act. And thanks to the media, it is witnessed by the entire world. But few understand it. For charity worker Kathryn Mann and a handful of others in the know, it is what they have been waiting for. The secretive fanatics that live in the Citadel suspect it could mean the end of everything they have built. And they will kill, torture and break every law to stop that.

Brighton and Hove - Past and Present
North Street in 1908. On the right two shops and the Blacksmith’s Arms stand between Portland Street and King Street - all demolished in the 1920s for Barclays Bank. The shop on the immediate left could be the “Nougat Box”; and the Woodalls hand barrow on the right is probably a one-man enterprise. It remains one of the busiest streets in the city today. Business Hotel, homes, shops - and a new lane - for The Lanes Frank le Duc @BHcitynews
Planners have agreed a scheme for shops, homes, offices, and a 26-room boutique hotel in the heart of The Lanes. The £15 million scheme will also create a new lane behind the old Hannington’s department store. The first big development of the area since the 1960s, updating Brighton Square, was approved by the city council’s planning committee. The scheme will lead to the creation of a pedestrian shopping lane between Brighton Place and Meeting House Lane. A long-hidden 17th-century building, Puget’s Cottage, will also become visible - and be
preserved - for the first time in decades. The scheme is the work of two landowners: Centurion Group and the RBS Global Restructuring Group. Ed Allison-Wright, director of Centurion, said on Wednesday: “I’m delighted that we not only had a successful result from the planning committee this afternoon but a unanimous vote of approval. “Together with our neighbouring landlords, RBS Global Restructuring Group, we have been working hard with council planning officers and key local stakeholders over the past 18 months to bring this scheme forward with our architects Morgan Carn Partnership. “I’m pleased both as a stakeholder in the scheme and as a Brighton and Hove resident

currently dominated by an unsightly service yard and a hotchpotch of modern buildings. The site was once part of the Hannington’s store, which closed in the early 2000s. The new shopping lane will include 14 shops or restaurants, with seven homes above and two floors of office space. Some buildings in Brighton Square will be demolished to create the boutique hotel and a new four-storey building with a ground-floor shop and three flats above. Permission was also granted to build an additional storey on
buildings in Brighton Square to create seven three-storey town houses. The square will be renovated, with refurbished shop fronts and new planting, including four silver birch trees. Because of the historic nature of the site, which lies on top of an ancient raised beach, archaeological excavations will take place and be recorded. The plan aims to revive and enhance an area in The Lanes,

The places I eat
Azure brings the exotic flavours of the Middle East to brighten up the seafront in Brighton Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn
Nestled between Brighton Pier and the Big Wheel lies a newlyopened Middle-Eastern-inspired restaurant, Azure. Renovating the once-fairlyrundown area of Brighton seafront has been no mean feat for owner Max Mazurenko and he is keen to let the world of Brighton and Hove know that Azure is open for business. Decorated head to toe in sky blue, with a distinctive laid-back feel, the space at Azure was a lot bigger than I had anticipated. Think ceramic tiles and gorgeous lamps and shades, broken down into tables of two and booths for
larger groups to share. Max gave us a guided tour and informed us that a film crew had recently been using the space. Exotic indeed! Settling into one of the larger booths, we admired the ceramictiled table and calm surroundings. Max sat with us and talked us through his vision, which was to create a Middle Eastern hub in the heart of the city, with a focus on good food and good times. Having triumphed in the prime location of Azure, he also informed us of his plans to open a grilled seafood restaurant in the adjacent property next summer. Voicing his concerns over the quiet footfall this area of town sees during the summer, Max was keen to showcase why the general public should take the time to tread down to the seafront this

winter. The new chef at Azure was formerly of Western Road’s much-loved Mascara restaurant and Max felt his North African cooking could be influential to Azure’s success, combining Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian flavours with the alreadyestablished Middle Eastern dishes. We were treated to a platter of Azure’s finest delicacies, each dish well presented in clay pots to share and enjoy. With a new chef on board, this was a great opportunity to preview the menu Max and his team have been working on recently to improve the cuisine at Azure. Plated in front of us was a savory rice dish infused with saffron and star anise, served slightly warm, it was a great filler to complement the array of meat-based dishes. A stand-out was the slow-cooked lamb shank in a rich jus. The lamb was cooked well and tasted utterly sublime as it tenderly fell off the bone onto my plate. The shank came cleverly paired with slow-roasted courgettes and red peppers, which added some colour and sweetness to the dish. A mixed kebab was also present, tender chunks of chicken thigh marinaded to their heart’s content,
Be At One for your Christmas cocktails Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn
Be At One has opened its second site outside of London on the site of Cube Bar on Castle Street. With a focus on style, substance and fantastic cocktails, the branch should be a sure-fire hit with the Christmas crowds and beyond. Opening its first branch in 1998 in Battersea Rise, the Be At One brand quickly expanded to more than 17 sites across the capital before expanding to Reading - and now our wonderful city. Other sites on the horizon include Bristol and Milton Keynes.
Cocktails is the emphasis at Be At One, with the company employing only full-time bartenders who go through two months of training to ensure the highest quality of mixology knowledge, bar skills, eye for detail and, of course, cocktail recipes. Set over two floors with high stools, red leather and lowswinging lights, this cocktail bar is a throwback to the classic years of cocktail-making and will be a hotspot over the weekends with its welcome atmosphere and eclectic drinks menu. Cocktails on offer top more than 200 and the drinks menu is cleverly

mixed with balls of mint-flavoured lamb mince. I only wished there was an abundance of flatbreads to mop up the oils and juices left from the meat dishes, something that Max and the team are working on to ensure everything is baked in-house and made fresh. Feasting on jumbo tiger prawns doused in garlic, lemon and coriander plus halloumi salad, I could picture sitting outside, eating and drinking with friends and watching as the sun sets and the tide drifts in. Having a sea view is a huge plus point for Azure, alongside a novel idea that
you order all food on in-house iPads, something that families and children are bound to revel in and enjoy. Of course, Azure is going to be a tourist hotspot. But that doesn’t make it any less of a restaurant. Max’s focus on providing goodquality food that is lovingly cooked to feed couples, friends and large groups is spot on for that area of town and I say good luck to this new Middle Eastern fusion restaurant. The Azores, Portugal
City has special place in end of whaling and start of whale-watching Tom Gallagher @GallagherTDG
The Azores, a nine-Island archipelago cast adrift in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is almost unparalleled in its stunning environment - just under four hours’ flight from the United Kingdom. Chief among its natural resources are the clean waters that lap the many beaches, where whale-watching has become
a staple facet of the tourism industry. And that is thanks in no small part to a very important meeting in Brighton more than 30 years ago. On July 23 1982 in Brighton, members of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) adopted a moratorium on commercial whaling. Nations from across the globe - agreed at the Hilton Hotel to ban commercial whaling; the reformation from whaling to whale-watching that began in our city has helped to reshape

travel across the globe. The archipelago of the Azores is an autonomous region of Portugal that lies some 1,500km from Lisbon and 3,900km from the coast of North America. It is at the heart of a migratory pattern of cetaceans with rich waters that play home to many resident groups of animals. It became a major site for whaling as a booming industry harvested what it could from the seas around its shore. But, with the end to whaling, the Azores is currently one of the world’s largest whale sanctuaries. Among resident and migrant species, common or rare, more than 20 different types of cetaceans can be spotted in the Azores. It is an impressive figure and it corresponds to a third of the total number of existing species. Visitors can see whales and dolphins throughout the year, due to the resident species of the archipelago. Spotted dolphins are more common during the summer, while blue whales are

most frequently spotted during the spring and autumn. Sperm whales, Sei whales and bearded whales are most frequently seen in the summer. Where once the ocean was farmed for its bounty, it is now the bedrock of conservation and eco-tourism. Whale-watching tours are many and offer the chance to see the lush volcanic islands from the water. The former whaling stations and yards form a cultural backdrop of museums and places of interest. And, across the islands, options abound for the active traveller in this wild, wide-open adventure playground. Scuba-diving and surfing as well as sailing and swimming with dolphins are just some of the aquatic adventures to be had. On land, trekking the volcanic landscape is a popular draw and cycling or mountain-biking are also well-defined options.
Canyoning, bird-watching, horse-riding and kayaking are all at home in this startling environment and the climate, which is often changeable, adds more charm to the destination. Direct flights to the Azores are operated by SATA International and run from March to October. The Azores’ timeless beauty is within easy reach of the UK. And thanks to a legacy born in Brighton, it offers some of the most unforgettable whalewatching experiences in the world. Backs are our business: ease the pain of sciatica Paul Coneyworth @BeauPilates
One of our main areas of concern and focus here at BeauPilates is everything back-related: posture, balance, alignment, and flexibility. Clients come to us seeking a remedy for back ailments and complaints more than any other “niggling” pain. This is on the increase due to aspects of a fast-paced lifestyle, including ceaseless driving, carrying young children, and hunching over a desk for hours on end. Therefore, the following statistics should not come as a surprise: 80% of adults in the United Kingdom will experience
back pain of some description at one point in their life - with up to 50% of all adults experiencing some form of back pain at any given point within a calendar year. Sciatica is one of the most common ailments in this subject
The “Swan Stretch” prevents pain
area. Sciatica is the irritation of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the human body, which inserts in the lower back, around the back of the pelvis, and runs through the buttocks, all the way down both legs, eventually ending in the feet. The sheer length of it causes greater scope for irritation and compression compression that often occurs because of spinal constriction and nerve irritation. The pain - symptoms of which include tingling and numbness manifests itself in the lower back and buttocks, moving horizontally from there. Sciatica can be onset by such factors as heavy-lifting and age; it can be exacerbated by a lack of strength and
flexibility in the legs, around the hips and gluteal muscles. This is where Dynamic Pilates can be incredibly effective. Dynamic, active stretching is a key component of every workout we oversee here at Beau. The “Swan Stretch” elongates the piriformis muscle, which is located deep within the hip joint and runs in close proximity to the sciatic nerve. When the piriformis muscle becomes tight and/or inflamed, it can cause irritation to the sciatic nerve; stretching this muscle goes a great way towards alleviating this pain and can be achieved using several different positions. Follow this step-by-step guide and eradicate or prevent that discomfort today:
■ Kneel on the ground, stretch your right leg out behind you, and bend your left knee so your left foot is near your right pelvic bone with pointed toes; ■ Lean forwards so that your chest is puffed out; ■ Place your hands on the ground for balance and lean forward attempting to come onto your forearms; ■ Hold for 30 seconds. This is one stretch that we incorporate regularly in a Dynamic Pilates workout. Don’t let sciatica hold you back. Paul Coneyworth is master trainer at BeauPilates, Brighton BN1 6RD. BMW release pictures of the 2014 M3 saloon BMW M3 saloon (2014) Power: 425bhp 0-62mph: 4.1sec Top-speed: 174mph (limited) Price: Starting from £56,175
The new M3’s twin-turbo straight six displaces 2979cc, and develops 425bhp and 406lb ft. While horsepower is only up 11bhp from the old V8 M3, torque has jumped a massive 111lb ft, and is on tap all the way from 18005500rpm. Peak power is available from 5390-7000rpm – the twinturbo mill revs out to 7600rpm. The new M3 is certainly not a shrinking violet! Nope – the flared air dams front and rear turn up the visual aggression to 11 – though BMW does claim the combination of vents, intakes and wings decreases lift at the front and rear axles. BMW has increased the narrower 3-series track to match that of the wider M4 coupe too, necessitating a set of tasty blistered arches for that classic M car stance. Track-spec cooling systems for the engine, brakes and differential are standard in the new M3: BMW
The all-new BMW M3 saloon, available in spring 2014
says it’s worked hard to improve the car’s race circuit performance to cater for track day enthusiast. Forged 19in alloys are standardfit in the UK, along with upgraded M Sport brakes. Lighter, larger carbon-ceramic stoppers with gold calipers will be on the options list. For the first time, the fourdoor gets a carbon roof, which saves 5kg. There’s also a onepiece carbon driveshaft, a carbon engine bay strut-brace, and
the skin there are aluminium suspension. At 1520kg, the F30 M3 weighs a huge 80kg less than an equivalent E92 M3 saloon.
What about the handling? There’s a retuned M Differential, that BMW claims enhances traction by altering the amount of diff lock between zero and one hundred per cent in a fraction of a second. Spec the paddleshift gearbox and you get launch control and a ‘Smokey Burnout’ function – stick with BMW have worked the manual and it’s up to the driver to provide hard to improve race those feats yourself.

Anything new inside? One-piece sports seats, some ‘M’branded footrest and steering wheel trinkets, and the usual tricolour stitching. Other than that, it’s stock 3-series – not exactly a disappointment, but hardly an exciting cabin given you’ll pay £56,175 when the new M3 lands in spring 2014.
GM appoint their first female chief executive General Motors has announced Mary Barra, 51, a career-long GM manager, as its new global CEO, the first time that a woman has taken that position. Barra started working for the company in 1980 as a General Motors Instutute co-op student at the Pontiac Motor Division. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. GM also sent her to Stanford for her MBA. Before her appointment to the CEO post, she was the senior vice president for global product development, responsible for the
design, engineering, program management and quality of GM vehicles worldwide. She was also the head of GM’s global purchasing and supply chain. “With an amazing portfolio of cars and trucks and the strongest financial performance in our recent history, this is an exciting time at today’s GM,” said Barra. “I’m honored to lead the best team in the business and to keep our momentum at full speed.” She succeeds Dan Akerson, who guided the company after the government bailout. Akerson,

ARIES March 21 - April 20 Your professional life is taking on something of a renaissance. It has taken you some time to find your niche but now you have there is no stopping you. You may be thinking of retraining or updating your skills set. Although the temptation is to over-indulge, try to avoid it.
LIBRA September 24 - October 23 You appear to have more than you can cope with this week, what with work, social demands and your ever expanding circle of friends. Don’t let it get to you. Ever heard the saying what comes around, goes around? You have been a great help to others; let them now help you.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21 This week will be hectic as you try to complete all those outstanding jobs before the holiday season. You want to relax your mind and body. This is a great idea but try not to get too fraught or be too pedantic. Take for a little spiritual reflection and you will find things have a way of sorting themselves out.
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22 You’ll be asked to take on even greater and bigger challenges at work. This could involve you travelling overseas in the not too distant future or meeting and liaising with overseas visitors. All the financial planning, you have been engaged in of late are great but make time for fun this week!
GEMINI May 22 - June 21 Your over-exuberance can be interpreted as being pushy and bossy. You know this is not you but do others? Exercise caution in your career, at home and in your relationships and all will be well. Listen more and act less and you will be overjoyed at what can be achieved. A good week for making new and influential friends.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21 I hope you paid heed and went to the gym? It’s not too late. If you are to remain mind healthy you need to be body healthy. You’ve been a little snappy recently. Think of all the good endorphins you will be releasing if you take some exercise. Your loved ones may benefit too, be a little kinder to them!
CANCER June 22 - July 22 This is a very good time for you and a very good time of year for you to indulge in a little introspection and self-analysis. You know where your career is going but what about the rest of your life? To find inner peace and balance you need to search your soul.
CAPRICORN 22 December - January 20 Your focus is altruistic this week. You will be called upon to make a charitable donation or take on an even bigger and more substantial long term commitment to a charity that is close to your heart. Undertake this and you will reap the benefits fourfold!
LEO July 23 - August 22 Things are a little calmer this week on the social front but that is not necessarily a bad thing so try not to feel too despondent. You did need time to recharge your batteries; you can’t always run at break neck speed! Being assertive both at home and at work will gain you respect and enhance your status.
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19 You are walking a bit of a tightrope this week as you try to keep everyone happy. This will take all your powers of diplomacy and persuasion. But on the plus side it does mean that you are a person everyone wants a bit of, that must make you feel good?! Don’t be tempted to overspend.
VIRGO August 23 - September 23 If you are planning a trip make sure you take your time and watch your budget. Choose your destination wisely and you can have a great time and stay afloat! If you are in a couple then you could be in for a “significantly” romantic time. If you are single then you could just meet someone very special!
PISCES February 20 - March 20 Heard the saying “if you want something done, ask a busy person”? That’s you. It means you will be busy and will be given a bucket list! Take heart it also means you are able to cope. Your skills at multi-tasking and problem solving will not go unnoticed but, neither should your loved ones!

Don’t mess with the Rohan Richard Morris
He may have joined the Albion as a central defender, but former Chelsea prospect Rohan Ince is fast-establishing himself as one of the division’s most exciting young midfielders. There would have been few – if any – Albion fans who could have predicted the 21-year-old’s rise to first team prominence but in the absence of reigning player of the year Liam Bridcutt, Ince has impressed the Amex faithful with a string of imposing performances. And judging by the recent post-match reactions on rival clubs’ fans websites, the rest of the Championship is starting to sit up and take note of the marauding youngster. The 18-month contract awarded to him in February runs out next year and Seagulls fans are hoping the Albion hierarchy has prioritised a long-term deal for the club’s latest starlet. His stats for the season so far suggest he is more than worth it. In his 11 games the Albion have lost just once – the 2-1

team-leading 38 of 49 aerial battles. Nobody in the Albion team wins more headers. He has given away just 12 free kicks and only surrendered his side’s possession four times when tackled. With Bridcutt regularly linked with a move to the Premier League, Ince could well be the future of the Albion engine room. The Brighton board would be well-advised to secure his services on a longer-term basis before others recognise Rohan Ince’s undoubted potential.
home reverse against Derby County – and the Seagulls have taken maximum points in all four games in which Ince has completed 90 minutes (Burnley, Bolton, Blackburn, Leicester). He has yet to register a goal or an assist but has clocked up 306 accurate passes from the 381 he has attempted, landing him a pass completion rate of 80.3 per cent. In providing an excellent protective shield in front of Matthew Upson and Gordon Greer, Ince has made 17 tackles, 19 interceptions and won a

Speaking to defender Matthew Upson was somewhat of a surprise. Here’s a man who has played for England at the World Cup but he only had good things to say about the place. Great pitch. Secluded. He played there competitively with Reading and says people shouldn’t mock it. I know he never had to sit in the temporary stands in the pouring rain, exposed to the weather. It could be grim of course. The former ground certainly throws up a gentle reminder of where Albion have come from. I think we all know where they are heading as well. Upson also had some great views, Let’s hope they as did Nathan Jones, on the do it with style and a strength and appeal of the to foreign swagger. Just like Steve Championship players and managers. Just like Steve upsetting the form books (Man McQueen. City anyone?). There’s a wonderful piece of cinema in the Magnificent Seven when Yul Brynner asks Steve McQueen – “Where you from?” (He points behind him). Then asks “Where you heading ?“ (He points forward). It is of course the story of a group of misfit cowboys coming together to take on the money-grabbing bandits. I was reminded of the clip as I made a retro-style return to Withdean this week for the Albion press call. The theatre of trees actually looks pretty similar when the Seagulls were playing there. Big match preview: Middlesbrough vs Brighton & Hove Albion
Oscar Garcia
Oscar’s injury problems spread to the Albion defence Brighton will have to do without club captain Gordon Greer and top stopper Tomasz Kuszczak during tomorrow’s match with Middlesbrough. Kuszczak was injured before the Albion’s impressive home win over high-flying Leicester City while Greer was replaced by Adam El Abd early on in the same game. Neither will play any part on Teeside tomorrow (Saturday) and Oscar Garcia could also be without left back Stephen Ward who is nursing an injured foot. El Abd will fill in alongside Matthew Upson – who makes his 40th consecutive league start for the Seagulls – in central defence, with Lewis Dunk expected to replace him on the bench. Peter Brezovan is the likely starter in goal after impressing in the win against Leicester. Inigo Calderon is favourite to play left back if Ward fails to recover in time. In midfield Oscar is likely to continue with the trio of Rohan Ince, Liam Bridcutt and Andrew Crofts while Craig Conway will almost certainly start on what will be the last game of his fruitful loan move from Premier League Cardiff City. With Will Buckley, Kazenga Lua Lua and Andrea Orlandi all having missed substantial

chunks of the campaign, Conway’s consistent form has been a welcome addition to Oscar’s squad and the Scotland international is being heavily tipped for a return to The Amex once the loan window reopens in the new year. Middlesbrough have injury concerns of their own and will also be without their first choice goalkeeper. On loan Shay Given will start his second game in the absence of Jason Steele and Kei Kamara – who has plundered four goals and two assists since his arrival from Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City – looks set to miss out. run of form with just one win from their last six games and four all season. They have leaked 30 goals in 19 games and sit a wretched 18th in the division. Nevertheless, they have scored an impressive 30 goals – bettered only by Derby County and Leicester City – and in Albert Adomah they boast one of the division’s in form players. The attacking midfielder has an impressive seven goals and four assists this campaign. Brighton’s chances could be boosted by the return of Leo Ulloa. The talisman striker had been pencilled in for a place on the bench last week but was held back for a further seven days.

I wanted a reaction from the players and they did really well. I felt we played one of our best games of the season and it was certainly the best first half that we have played here. “We started well today, not slowly like we did against Barnsley and we deserved this result. “Leicester are one of the best teams in the league and they have a good squad with a great manager and are doing very well, but we only gave them one real chance – which they scored from, and to be fair I believe we played a lot better than them. “When you play against the topof-the-league side your motivation is already high but all of the players gave 100 per cent today.”
