THE SECRET INQUISITION ■ Citizens barred from hearing into “golliwog” councillor Greg Hadfield and Frank le Duc @BrightonIndy A councillor has been found guilty of misconduct for saying that golliwogs were “nostalgic, not racist”. Councillor Dawn Barnett was judged to have brought her office into disrepute, at a behind-closeddoors hearing at Hove Town Hall yesterday. Despite a formal objection from Brighton & Hove Independent, the public were cleared from the room as a Brighton and Hove City Council Standards Hearing Panel listened to evidence in secret for three hours. Complaints against Cllr Barnett were prompted by comments made by her in August – comprising 59 words - to a reporter from The Argus about the sale of a coaster or placemat, which featured a golliwog in an old Robertson’s marmalade advertisement, in Bert’s Home Store in Western Road, Brighton.
The Conservative councillor for Hangleton and Knoll was previously cleared of personally directing a disrespectful or racist remark against any individual or group. She was also cleared of causing the council to breach its equality duties. Yesterday, however, it was decided she did breach the council’s code of conduct by bringing her office or the council into disrepute. Councillor Lizzie Deane, the Green deputy leader of the council, chaired the panel. She said it had been a difficult decision: “We accept that this was inadvertent. We are also mindful Controversial image

Exclusive: The case for the defence of Dawn Barnett ■ At a secret hearing yesterday, a statement from GEOFFREY THEOBALD, leader of the Conservative Group on the city council, outlined the arguments in her defence. This is an edited summary. It is clear that an enormous amount of time has been spent on considering this matter and I respect the efforts of the investigating officer in trying to reach a fair and reasonable conclusion. Indeed, there has been a clear attempt by the council to settle without reaching this stage. I think it is a shame that this was not accepted by the complainants. I obviously welcome the report’s conclusion that Dawn

Afterwards, Cllr Barnett said: “I’m disappointed with the outcome. I reiterate the apology that I’ve already given. It was never my intention to offend anyone.” The panel started sitting in public last month, but adjourned the meeting after Cllr Barnett fell down stairs at Hove Town Hall. When it restarted yesterday Cllr Deane said press and public would be excluded. When challenged by Brighton & Hove Independent and by Brighton and Hove News website, the panel voted: “The
public interest is better served in holding the meeting in private.” The formal reason for this was because the panel was going to discuss personal information relating to an individual. Cllr Barnett had made it known she wanted the hearing in public. Mary Mears, a fellow Conservative councillor, said: “As a previous leader of the council, I feel very concerned, having been at both hearings, that having started in open session, at the second hearing they went into closed session.” The complainants were council workers Dan Hermitage and Tim Read, council tenant Narinder Madhar, and the Brighton and Hove City Council Black and Minority Ethnic Workers Forum - through Sandra Cartwright, who chairs the forum. Mr Read said: “I struggle to understand how any person with any amount of sensitivity around racial equality could possibly speak out in this way.”
Mr Madhar said: “What I would like to see happen is that Ms Barnett is expelled without further delay for her reckless and irresponsible comments.” “This is of particular concern to me given that Hangleton and Knoll boasts one of the largest multicultural community groups in the whole of the city.”
Dawn Barnett’s 59 words: (quoted by The Argus)

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. In fact I’ve got a golliwog magnet sitting on my boiler. “They’re nostalgic, not racist. this up. Dawn takes issue very strongly with this defamation of her character and has suggested that these remarks be withdrawn. The presumption under the Human Rights Act is people are entitled to express views, no matter how divergent they may be from the accepted norm, unless circumstances are such that interference with that right is necessary and proportionate. I have demonstrated that Dawn Barnett is a dedicated councillor, who may have spoken unwisely, but who cares passionately about her residents and that, therefore, taking any action against Dawn would be entirely disproportionate.

‘Gagging bill’ will hinder the work of charities and divert funds from good causes Jason Kitcat @jasonkitcat
Residents may have heard of the government’s so-called “gagging bill” and the impact it may have on charities in our city. Scores of organisations including the Women’s Institute, RSPB, and Crisis - oppose the new law because it would hinder their important day-to-day work. The proposals plan to introduce new regulation and burdens on what is called “non-party campaigning” by charities. Their political lobbying is already regulated by the Charity Commission. But the new proposals will severely limit what charities and campaigning organisations can do during an election year.
The definition of what this includes is so broad and vague that, as it stands, charities’ ordinary daily work could fall foul of the rules. Cancer charities commenting on science research policy, veteran organisations campaigning for more support for ex-service people, and children’s charities working on tackling poverty could come to a halt.

Daniel’s journey from homelessness to the corridors of power Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy A young man from Brighton, who has experienced homelessness firsthand, travelled to Westminster to take part in a national debate about the issues of youth homelessness. Daniel Aitken, 21, who was sleeping rough only a few months ago, is now off the streets because of the help he received from Sussex Central YMCA, a local homeless charity. Daniel was invited to join the Youth Homeless Parliament made up of young people from YMCAs across the country - in a debate with Kris Hopkins, the housing minister, and Stephen Williams, the local government minister. During the event, organised by the Department for Communities and Local Government, the young representatives shared their experiences, opinions and concerns - and debated how the government can either improve their current lives or to prevent the same situation happening to others in the future. Daniel said: “I became homeless a little before November in 2013 after a family dispute. I found myself sleeping on benches and in parks at night, and found it
very difficult to survive. “The YMCA found a family who were offering their spare bedroom at night for people like me. This was a life-saving moment, giving me shelter, a welcoming atmosphere and the foundations I needed to re-build my life. “I was really honoured and grateful to be invited to this event at Westminster. After a short time living on the streets, I felt as if nobody cared about me. I felt that I was useless on every level. I was wrong.” The young people presented a youth manifesto to the ministers that outlined three key areas prioritised by the young people: prevention through education, housing, and support to find employment. Daniel said: “I read out the youth manifesto, written by people from similar backgrounds as me, in front of around 100 people. “It’s difficult to find the words to explain how great it felt to be listened to and taken seriously by the government. “When I walked out of that building I felt as if I were 10 feet tall. It was a brilliant experience and a huge learning curve for me, and I would love the chance to go back and address them again on these topics.”

Revealed: Plan for 50 new homes in historic Hove hotel
An early impression of what the development might look like
Dan Wilson @wilsondan
Plans have been revealed that will transform the empty 84-bedroom Lansdowne Place Hotel in Hove into 50 new homes. The concept was presented to local residents in advance of the submission of a formal planning proposal. The building close to Hove seafront has been empty for almost a year since it was shut down and was placed into administration. A proposal earlier this year to turn the building into 50 serviced apartments was not successful. Citizens of a certain vintage will often speak fondly of what they call “The Dudley” - which was, in its heydey, one of the better hotels in Brighton and Hove. Surprisingly, the building is
Lansdowne Place Hotel has been closed for a year
not listed. The new proposal will see the hotel developed into 43 one- and two-bedroom apartments, two new penthouses and five mews town-houses. The development will also include a first-floor garden area for residents and several dozen indoor bike-rack spaces too; 40% of the new homes will be “affordable housing”. Of immediate concern to residents who attended the consultation was car parking. Only 13 new off-road parking spaces will be made available to the occupants of the building, with a possible two more created by suspending double yellow lines at the front of the hotel. In an area that already suffers parking problems, such provision does not seem enough. The new development will likely house more than 100 new residents, and even if only half of the households choose to keep a car, that represents a significant
extra call on already-scarce parking spaces. It is hard to see how significantly more parking spaces could be provided within the plan. And the proposal notes that permanent housing offers less of a parking strain than retaining the property as a hotel. Indeed, much of the plan rests on the assertion that a hotel is not financially viable and would prove to be more of a disturbance to locals than 50 new homes. The fact, however, is that local residents may end up with many of the problems of a hotel. Such attractively-situated homes, a pebble’s throw from the beach and Hove Lawns, will be perfect prospects for speculating investors seeking to profit from holiday lets. Next door to the hotel, there are already two 12-bed party house holiday lets, and within 200 metres, there are certainly at least four other holiday lets and numerous Airbnb-style rentals. It would be a shame if the opportunity to create muchneeded homes in the city was lost to holiday lets. Clearly, the current situation - with the building empty and decaying - is intolerable. But to lose a formerly-noble hotel too is something of a shame. If housing is the future of the Lansdowne Place Hotel, then it seems the current proposal may need revision to address the parking problems and also ensure that 60% of the new dwellings do not become second homes and holiday lets.

Sussex Uncovered: An eye-opening insight into poverty and inequality Tony Greenstein @TonyGreenstein
When I came down to Brighton from Liverpool nearly 40 years ago, I expected, if not a land of milk and honey, the nearest equivalent: low unemployment, high wages, and a region where poverty barely existed. As the Sussex Uncovered report from the Sussex Community Foundation shows, I could not have been more wrong. Our coastal towns have large areas of deprivation. Housing for the poor is all but non-existent. Sussex Community Foundation (SCF) was founded in 2006 and undertook to manage or raise funds from a variety of different trusts and funds within Sussex such as the Hans and Marit Rausing Trust and the Cullum family. It administers funds for groups such as Comic Relief. The groups it has helped fund include the Hastings and Rother Credit Union, Brighton and Hove Unwaged Advice and Rights Centre, and Reaching Families, a support group offering support to the parents and carers of children with disabilities and special needs in West Sussex.
SCF has raised, since 2006, some £12m - of which £6m has been put in an endowment fund for future use. Its grants are usually no more than £5,000 a year, which means that it funds the host of small and voluntary groups that get overwhelmed by the slick professional fundraising of the larger charities. Many of the Sussex Uncovered findings will be eye-opening. Many areas of Sussex are in the 5% most deprived areas in the United Kingdom according to the 2010 Index of Multiple Deprivation. The same areas of Brighton and Hove, Littlehampton and Hastings turn up repeatedly - as do parts of Hailsham and Eastbourne. Hastings - home of Robert Tressell, author of The RaggedTrouserted Philanthropists ranks as the 20th most-deprived district in England. The wages in Sussex are lower than the southeastt average. This should be no surprise. Brighton has seen de-industrialisation on a grand scale. Whereas there used to be 10,000 engineering workers (Gross Cash Registers, Alan West), it is now mainly a service economy: coffee houses, restaurants and light industry. One of the major areas of employment, the public sector, is
being cut to the bone. While most deprivation is centred in coastal towns, there are pockets of deprivation in Rye and Hailsham. Deprived people are often isolated and the majority of those claiming benefits do not live in deprived areas. Deprivation can result in a lower life-expectancy of about 10 years. Unsurprisingly, there is a high level of homelessness in Brighton and Hove, and in Crawley, in particular. When I first came down to Brighton, I squatted in empty buildings with none other than the Lord Bassam. Since then, the only contribution to the issue of Sussex Uncovered is published by Sussex Community Foundation homelessness of Mike Weatherley, Hove’s MP and former property to Brighton to work. people in Hastings is 23%; in dealer, is to outlaw squatting in Where the Sussex Uncovered Brighton and Hove, it is 22%. residential properties, regardless report is weak is on There is a very high proportion of how long they have been empty; recommendations. Pretty Good Thinking
Sarah Morgan @sarah_morgan
I am thrilled to introduce myself as the brand new beauty columnist in the Brighton & Hove Independent. I am a publicist and organic fanatic with a passion for effective natural personal care, particularly if it smells divine or last for ages. It need not cost a fortune to go natural - and I will share my own journey, which started three years ago when I worked for an organic brand right here in Sussex. Since then, I have never looked or felt better. I have lived in Brighton for almost three decades, and in that time there has been a shift in the beauty industry and the ways that we shop. I grew up on Body Shop ethics, so even when Paul McCartney stood beside Anita Roddick at my graduation in the 1980s, it was her hand that I was more excited to shake. I would like to share the best of the exciting ethical products out there, and help you to choose whether you need a luxury label or a modest DIY home blend. So how will this play out? I will contrast “pretty penny” pricing with “second nature” high performance and “thinking
pretty” allstars. I will feature handbag heroes for everyday use, and pick out staples for the family bathroom - plus gorgeous seasonal treats for partners or friends. Trends like beauty-box subscriptions will reveal new ways of sampling, to discover the brands that pack a real punch when it comes to key actives. You are also in for a pop of natural brilliance alongside the brilliant naturals - because I do not want to exclude any devoted make-up lovers. I would like to be proved wrong, but it seems to me that most organic brands perform better with skincare than in colour cosmetics. If you enjoy wearing lipstick as much as I do, you probably know that cochineal teeters close to hypocrisy for some of the purists, but I have certainly learned to live with it. Much as my vintage pals love the staying power of Ruby Woo matte by Mac, or the retro styling of Besame, I pay lip-service to a powerful red simply called Box - after Alex Box, the creative director at Illamasqua, whose cult vision is truly breathtaking.

Love, Nina: Despatches from Family Life, by Nina Stibbe I thank my muchlamented late mum from the bottom of my heart for religiously keeping all the family letters in one enormous file - which I sometimes dip in and out of, usually on a rainy Sunday afternoon, when the weather is far too awful to contemplate going out. They are a joy to read, from my 12-year-old homesick self in France, complaining bitterly about the lack of toast, to the revelation of my cousin, Jennifer, in a kibbutz in Israel. that avocados grow on trees! Who knew? In the 1980s, Nina Stibbe wrote letters home to her sister in Leicester describing her trials and triumphs as a nanny to a London family. There’s a cat nobody likes, a visiting dog called Ted Hughes
(Ted for short) and suppertime visits from Alan Bennett, the local playwright. Not to mention the two boys, their favourite football teams, and rude words, a very broad-minded mother, and assorted nice chairs. From the mystery of the unpaid milk bill and the avoidance of nuclear war to meal-time discussions on pie-filler, the greats of English literature, swearing in German and sexually-transmitted diseases, Love, Nina is a wonderful celebration of bad food, good company and the relative merits of Thomas Hardy and Enid Blyton. She is convinced that Jonathan Miller is an opera singer and that balsamic vinegar will never catch on. You could almost be part of the family. Reading these letters is an absolute and utter joy.
But I have digressed and I am all out of space already. If this sounds like pretty good thinking to you, come back and graze over our selections next week.

An Independent View A disgraceful abuse of democracy There is a lot that is distasteful about the secret inquisition into comments made by Dawn Barnett. To put things into perspective, we quote in full on page 3 the 59 words attributed to her by a talented reporter with The Argus, who only recently left the newspaper to work for a national news agency. It is difficult to be certain how the comments came to be made - not least, because a 70page report into the affair was removed from the city council’s website before yesterday’s hearing. Interestingly, it is understood the young reporter was not asked to give evidence. Experience of newspaper journalism, however, helps us imagine how the original relatively-routine story might have emerged. A shopper browsing in a corner of Bert’s Store - a busy independent shop in Brighton city centre - comes across a display tray of numerous coasters or placemats, each illustrated by a different historic advertisement or poster. Today, you can still buy any of them online - and elsewhere - from the Robert Opie Collection, which advertises itself as “the world’s largest collection relating to British nostalgia and advertising memorabilia”. The shopper may have been upset, insulted and angered by seeing the old advertisement for Robertson’s Golden Shred marmalade.
Certainly, she may have been sufficiently perturbed to mention it to a young reporter. What would any reporter do? The answer is obvious: stir up a controversy - by getting in touch with a councillor on the “political correctness gone mad” side of political discourse and then rehearsing the thrust of what she has said to other who disagree. Thus, many a page lead, on a quiet news day, is born. Then, the world moves on. But not in this case. We do not question the concern of the complainants. Nor do we seek to diminish the importance of confronting racism in all its forms, in all its contexts - past and present. But we do advise caution especially if it leads to ripping out images of golliwogs from Enid Blyton books or vetting shelves for products that cross the line from nostalgia to nausea. There is something Orwellian about democraticallyaccountable individuals meeting in private and discussing in secret reasons why another democraticallyaccountable individual should undergo “training” in equality and diversity. What does such behaviour seek to achieve? What precedent does it seek to set? The truth is that secret inquisitions behind closed doors - for spurious reasons of confidentiality, or public order, or for no articulated reason at all (as yesterday)- are not only distasteful. They are disgraceful.

Albion museum does a great job of preserving club historyif only it had more trophies Stefan Swift @tslr
The excellent Brighton and Hove Albion Collectors and Historians Society invited The Seagulls Love Review (TSLR) to the opening of the new Albion museum on a rainy Monday evening at the back of Dick’s Bar. We were treated to mince pies, Albion royalty, mulled wine, a couple of speeches, and a misty-eyed trip down the old Goldstone Lane. Uncle Tony (Bloom) gave a speech welcoming “distinguished guests” (and TSLR, presumably), while offering an unlikely comparison - somehow linking the struggle for an Albion museum with that of the struggles of Mahatma Gandhi. I think TB was referring to the wider Albion struggle for a stadium. Which is much more like Gandhi’s struggle for an independent India, right? But it suited the moment and, in that instance, I bought whatever Mr Bloom was selling. And I saw, perhaps for the first time, some of the charm that has helped him become so rich. He praised curator Tim Carder, who also gave a speech - and who, by putting the museum together is, in my opinion, allowed to compare himself with Gandhi. During the ribbon-cutting, TB looked slightly demonic standing so close to Dick Knight with a pair of scissors. The showpiece area of the place is situated in the middle and effectively features three major works of art. Replica (and immensely-calculated) miniature models of the Goldstone and Withdean are triangulated by an actual working turnstile - taken from the West Stand side of the Goldstone. The turnstile looks a picture of historical splendour, and far more

majestic than it would have done during its dying days in the old ground. You can feel its historical importance and, for the first time in over 16 years, it looks at home. It is at home - although we can’t use it downstairs; it hasn’t got a fancy barcode reader. There’s actual art, too, famous players, old football shirts, a bit about programmes and fanzines (where somehow TSLR got used on a seemingly-permanent display board), a few old medals, plus interactivity for the kids who hate books. The toys include a video room where, I must confess, I did get distracted for far too long by a video of former Albion players offering their hindsighted insight from our sacrifice in that piss-pot trophy semi-final defeat at Luton. I don’t even need a museum for that pain. I still feel it!
There’s another exhibit, containing almost all the official Albion merchandise tat that exists in all of our lives, somehow made less tacky by the romanticism of time. I can only think that the duvet cover, circa 1992, was frozen to preserve its printed-on white Albion logo on its slightly incorrectly-blue single cover. Another nice little touch is a series of Albion songs - past and present - that are featured as part of the ceiling in the section leading towards the turnstile. It includes “Oh Lord, PC Beard”, a hymn of sorts that accompanied my early existence in the North Stand, something that was fast becoming simply a figment of my imagination. Preserving the history of the club is important and, thanks to Mr Carder, we know more about

A chance to be inspired at the end of a stadium tour
this football club than ever before. So how do you condense 113odd years of history into one museum? You can’t get every wonderful Albion story in there, but you can get a real sense of the club. And that is what they have done. Partly, this is due to the distinct lack of trophies. Were the rumours of Bill Archer and David Bellotti melting down our Sussex Senior Cups for cash true? Surely there’s a Jewish Chronicle Cup from the early 1980s somewhere? And what about those four trophies over the last 12 years? Did bloody Poyet take them? Did Gus say he’d won them? I take it that means that the Charity Shield from the 1900s is not making a reappearance any time soon. There are some winners’ medals and international caps. But the museum is missing a centrepiece trophy. It could do with a 1926 FA Cup trophy, the finest piece of silverware I have ever seen. But we didn’t win that one, I don’t think.
And therein the museum typifies the Albion perfectly: a lot of wonderful memories, but not enough trophies. Can you ever have enough trophies? I suppose not. Ultimately, what goes in the museum doesn’t really matter. What the Albion means to you is all that matters. This new museum is there to whet the appetite, to give the next generation of Albion kids the chance to be inspired at the end of a Falmer tour. A chance that we never had, and a chance the next generation always tends to throw back in their elders’ faces. But at least we tried, and we even gave them a quiz machine. Well, Brighton and Hove Albion Collectors and Historians Society did. And we’re pleased they did. Stefan Swift is joint editor of The Seagull Love Review (TSLR), the Brighton and Hove Albion fanzine. Let’s use Christmas to help our children to think more about giving than taking Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland
Ho, Ho, Ho! Here we go again. It’s almost Christmas - a time when, according to tradition and religious teachings, we are supposed to reach out and help those less fortunate than ourselves. As someone who is not religious, I see precious little of that happening - although I am sure the estimated 4% of our population who are regular church-goers will disagree with me. We all know that Christmas has become way too commercial and the majority of us are more interested in simply surviving the season of goodwill financially and, indeed, mentally. Most kids have decided what they want for Christmas months before and it is unlikely to be a
cheap choice. Long gone are the days when you could get away with sticking a satsuma and a few cheap presents in a stocking. In these expensive high-tech times, it’s the latest Xbox or iPad that will be requested - and expected. With all the pressures that are put on us by our kids, who are themselves so heavily influenced by those clever marketing people out there, do we really have the
looking chap sitting on the pavement outside your bank a couple of quid or purchasing a Big Issue magazine from the person with the dog. I believe this country has drifted so far away from the original meaning of Christmas that perhaps church and government should lead the way in redefining how we view this time of year. Perhaps, yes, this should be the season of giving - but not in the way we Long gone are the days necessarily currently see it: throwing when you could get away money at our kids and making the online toy with sticking a satsuma suppliers extremely rich. in a stocking” Wouldn’t it be nice if, as a family, we all resources left to reach out and sat around and decided which help those less fortunate than charity or charities we are going ourselves in any meaningful to support this year. way? ‘The Widows’ Embrace’ This week it feels like the whole world has been moved by the death of Nelson Mandela, one of the few real icons of our time. Although his death had been expected it still came as a shock. Despite the South African tradition of ‘celebrating’ a life and the many photos of people dancing and singing it is a great sadness that he is gone. But in the process we have been reminded just how much people can overcome both on a grand and personal scale.
I was also struck by the personal story of Mandela and his wives. Mandela is held is high esteem for a number of reasons. The greatest awe is usually in relation to his ability to forgive. His lack of bitterness and anger inspired us all. So it was interesting to see old footage of a press conference in 1992 to announce his separation from Winnie Mandela. Here his bitterness and sadness so rarely seen was on full public display. The failure of their marriage had broken his heart.
As a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator I was fascinated by the news coverage from a number of angles – truth and reconciliation of course is what my work is built on.
I was also incredibly moved watching his two wives greet each other at the memorial service; both looked utterly lost and devastated – dressed in black, unable to smile while all around them
brightly clothed crowds danced and sang. The bitterness was long gone – they were simply two widows united in grief. Choosing the collaborative legal process rather than the adversarial route when you separate is not about one side dominating the other. It is a way of doing things differently. Each partner has their own lawyer, we work together to forge a way forward. The whole process is built on trust and transparency; all advice is given openly, meaning there is less anger and bitterness. As a process it embodies much of what Nelson Mandela preached.

The parking meters that earn £30k a year Greg Hadfield @GregHadfield
Parking and the cost of parking is a favourite subject of Freedom of Information (FoI) requests to Brighton and Hove City Council. In the second of our regular look at recent successful requests, it is worth highlighting a question from an unnamed individual who straightforwardly asked on Wednesday (December 18): “Please would you supply me with information showing the amount of revenue collected from the parking meters in Preston Park Avenue, Brighton in 2012 and 2013. “I would also like to know the installation cost of each meter.”
Nine meters were bought and installed at a cost of £3,250 each
The response was almost immediate (see table below). It disclosed that the nine meters bought and installed at a cost of £3,250 each (£29,250, in total) have netted a total of £90,913 in 32 months (an aggregate of £2,841 a month - or an average of £315 per meter every month).

The parking charges in Preston Parking Avenue are: £1 an hour; or £3 for a maximum of four hours. The introduction of charges and the installation of the meters was controversial, a response to complaints about travellers’ vehicles being left in the residential avenue for months at a time. As our pictures show, the travellers’ vehicles have moved to nearby Surrenden Road (below), while relatively few people take advantage of the paid-for parking in Preston Park Avenue.

No Christmas is complete without a pudding
The Victorians had a clear view of what a perfect fa Yorkshireman William Strickland introduced turkey in 1526
Makings of a merry Christmas: What the Victorians did for us Sam Gardom @SamGardom
Most of the traditions of Christmas that we know and love today are creations of the Victorian era. Queen Victoria’s marriage to the German-born Prince Albert brought colourful traditions from the continent and made them instantlyfashionable in Britain. The German custom of decorating Christmas trees with candles, sweets, fruits, homemade decorations and small gifts took off in a big way. Of course, the tradition of cutting evergreen boughs as winter decoration is an ancient one - but the British embraced the tradition with gusto. It was not just the decorations
that were changing. Now a staple of British Christmas tradition, turkeys are believed to have first been brought to England in 1526 by Yorkshireman William Strickland; he acquired six birds from American Indian traders on his travels and sold them for tuppence each to the wealthy residents of Bristol. For years, it remained an indulgence of the rich. And it was not until the late 19th century that it really found favour as a Christmas delicacy, made fashionable by King Edward VII. Its perfect size for a middleclass family gathering - and the introduction of ovens - meant turkey became the dominant dish by the beginning of the 20th century. Up to this point, the main staple of a Christmas feast was often roast beef, sometimes goose or even rabbit, depending on what the family could
afford. Turkey was not the only “modern” addition to our Christmas table. Mince pies were once quite a different affair. In 1662, the “Minst Pyes” that Samuel Pepys mentions in his famous diary as part of a frugal Christmas dinner - of “a mess of brave plum porridge and a roasted pullet” - would have been a meatbased pie with spices and dried fruits. The earliest known recipe dates from Tudor times and was found in the state papers of Edward Conway, Charles I’s secretary of state. It calls for lamb and veal, as well as brown sugar, citrus zest, ground spices, and dates to be wrapped in a traditional pastry crust. Now for the humble roast potato.
Spuds originated in the Andes Mountains of South America, home to the largest number of varieties anywhere on the planet - with Peru

important part of the Christmas meal - although traditionally in mash form to begin with. The perfect roast potato is a personal thing. There are so many methods for enticing perfection from this simple ingredient. A simple roast in olive oil, or the more decadent goose fat or dripping; some even toss them in flour or semolina to create that perfect crisp, golden coating. One thing is for sure, though: everyone thinks their family’s way is the best. Stuffing is one of those things that no Christmas feast should be without. Its origins lie firmly in Roman times, when traditional delicacies like hare and dormouse were often stuffed with mixtures of offal, vegetables and
It was not until the late 19th century that turkey found favour as a Christmas delicacy” alone producing more than 3,000 types. The potato arrived in England in the late 15th century by way of Spain and quickly became a staple of the poor. It came into itsr own during the industrial revolution, providing a hardy, energy-filled crop to feed Britain’s rapidly-growing population. Once again, though it was the Victorians who made them an

spices. The term stuffing did not come into use until the mid-15th century; the Victorians, being of a genteel disposition, preferred the term “dressing”, a name that still used in parts of the United States. Most stuffing contained the traditional bread or cereals, herbs and spices, egg, and often sausage meat. Nowadays though, as with everything, the choices are many and varied. There are oyster stuffings, rice stuffings, haggis stuffings, and even tofu and fruity versions to choose from. But they all have the same goal in mind: to make sure you roll away from the
table stuffed or, as Charles Dickens says, “steeped in sage and onion to the eyebrows”. Another custom inspired by our continental neighbours is that of crackers. They were invented by London confectioner Tom Smith
‘‘
that snapped when pulled apart. Later, the sweets would be replaced by toys and party hats; in this form, they remain an essential part of a modern Christmas. Finally, no Christmas is complete without the iconic Christmas pudding. This bastion of Christmas tradition is perhaps the most recognisable symbol of Christmas and one of the few that finds its origins in the Christian traditions of the holiday. In medieval times, the Catholic Church decreed that on the 25th Sunday after Trinity, everyone should make a pudding containing 13 ingredients to represent Christ and the 12 apostles.
The Christmas pudding is the most recognisable symbol of Christmas and one of the few that finds its origins in the Christian traditions” after a trip to Paris in 1848. There, he noticed the sugared almonds being sold in twists of brightly-coloured paper and the idea was born. He created the Christmas cracker, a packet of sweets in a colourful paper
Each member of the family would then stir it from east to west to honour the Magi, a tradition still continued to this day by many on “Stir-up Sunday”. This “pudding” traditionally took the form of a sloppy dish made with spices, dried fruits, vegetables and meat. It was not until the Victorian times that the sweet, steamed version we know today came into being. Dickens draws a beautiful image in A Christmas Carol of the pudding “like a speckled cannon-ball, so hard and firm, blazing in half of halfa-quartern of ignited brandy, and bedight with Christmas holly stuck into the top”. Silver trinkets were hidden inside to bring luck, coins represented wealth, tiny wishbones for good luck, a ring for marriage - and a thimble for thrift became a new, if perilous,
addition to the experience. While no inventor of Christmas tradition, Dickens did play an integral role in cementing the Victorian Christmas in the hearts of the British people. His whimsical descriptions of its traditions, flavours and fellowship is as much responsible for the romantic dream of the perfect Christmas as anything. So, as you tuck into your turkey this year, or set the Christmas pud ablaze, don’t forget to spare a thought for our ancestors in whose snowy footsteps we so blissfully tread.

The ceremony was the culminating event of a rigorous judging process by a panel of 20 industry experts, who assessed initial entry submissions before conducting an extensive review of the entrants which included more than 150 hours of telephone interviews and “mysteryshopping” exercises. Fabrice Muamba inspires Albion Academy youngsters SOCCER star Fabrice Muamba, whose career was cut short by a cardiac arrest during an FA Cup match, has helped launch a pioneering new partnership to prepare young players for life after football. The former Arsenal, Birmingham City and Bolton Wanderers player met members of Brighton and Hove Albion’ s Football Academy at the American Express Community Stadium. In what is thought to be a first for football, the club has teamed up with leading local job board and former shirt sponsor BrightonandHoveJobs.com to ensure Academy members have the right skills to succeed in work when their careers come to an end. During his visit, Fabrice recounted his incredible story to a group of Academy scholars and stressed the importance of planning for life after football. He said: “It was a pleasure to come to the Amex to help launch this unique scheme and speak to the Academy players to make them aware of all the great things they can achieve after football. All young players hope to make the grade and play professional football, and that means working hard, but they should also have a

Meet the Montefiore Hospital’s Consultants General Surgeon Mr Parv Sains tells us more about hernias, one of his clinical interests: What is a hernia? “A hernia is a medical term to describe the bulge made when part of your insides - usually the bowel - pokes through the muscular wall of your abdomen. This can often create a visible lump under the skin”. When and why do they occur? “Your abdomen contains some 27 feet of intestines which are restrained by the abdominal muscles. But if there is a gap or a weakness in these muscles, a part of the intestine can push through”. What are the most common types of hernias? “Inguinal hernias, which occur in the groin account for approximately three quarters of all hernias. They are far more common in men than in women – around one in four men will have
an inguinal hernia at some point in their lives – whereas women are more likely to get a femoral hernia, which occurs in the top of the thigh”. Who is susceptible to getting hernias? “You become more susceptible to getting a hernia as you get older. But you are also more at risk if you are obese, do a lot of heavy lifting or have constipation or a cough for a long time”. Are they dangerous? “Hernias are not usually dangerous or painful. However, they can be unsightly and a nuisance, particularly if they are in your groin or upper thigh”. How do you repair them? “Repairing hernias is normally done with keyhole surgery which means a quicker recovery and less pain and scarring. At the Montefiore, we can usually carry out the procedure as a day case, so that you can go home the same day”. For further information please visit www.spiremontefiore.com

Snowman Spectacular Ball raises £265,000 for Chestnut Tree House Over 550 guests enjoyed a Christmas and 10th birthday party rolled into one at the sixth Chestnut Tree House Snowman Spectacular Ball and raised a staggering £265,551 on the night for the children’s hospice. Guests experienced an exclusive evening of magical entertainment in a winter wonderland setting inspired by Raymond Briggs’ iconic Snowman, while raising vital funds to help Chestnut Tree House care for life-limited children and their families. A ‘white carpet’ experience set the tone for the evening making guests feel like celebrities and the event was hosted by Peter Cornwell and broadcaster and campaigner, Anne Diamond. During the evening, guests were transported to the world

Linda Perry, Director of Children’s Services at Chestnut Tree House, said: “We are overwhelmed at the amazing support from our wonderful guests at this year’s Snowman Spectacular Fundraising Ball. £265,551 is an incredible sum and will pay for 38 days of care provided by Chestnut Tree House both at our children’s hospice and in the homes of our families. To put it into perspective, this year’s Ball has raised more in one evening
than our annual grant from the government. This really will make a huge difference to the children and families in Sussex who so desperately need our help – we couldn’t have asked for a better 10th birthday present. “Of course, we couldn’t put on a Ball of this scale without the wonderful support of our sponsors, so I would like to thank Mayo Wynne Baxter, The E3 Group, Juice 107.2, Sussex Life, The Hilton Brighton Metropole, West Sussex Print Limited, Classic Consulting, ECE Architecture, Rendezvous Casino and Aquaserve. There are so many people who have been involved with the Ball and I would like to say a huge and heartfelt thank you to each and every one of them on behalf of all of us at Chestnut Tree House – their support is absolutely invaluable.”

In addition, Auditorium 2 was transformed to present the enhanced sustainability credentials of the venue to demonstrate how to run sustainable events.

The places I eat
Little Blue Smokehouse pops up with beer-braised pig’s cheeks Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn
Pop-up restaurants have got to be one of my all-time favourite dining experiences. The anticipation about what will be on the menu - paired with eating great food (often cheaply) in a pub setting - is something I crave to see more of across the city. Therefore, imagine my delight when Street Diner regulars, The Little Blue Smokehouse, announced they would be serving

their array of smoked meats and other delights at one of Brighton and Hove’s best pubs. Partnering with Craft Beer Co on Upper North Street, the Little Blue Smokehouse team brought their usual array of smoked meats - plus an additional special of beer-braised pig’s cheeks. Little Blue Smokehouse started life as an experiment in the Crowborough pub, Blue Anchor. Owner Pop up at Craft Beer Co Martyn Cotton began experimenting with smokers, soon finish; some we finish in the oven; expanding on his American BBQ and some get steamed, braised, skills and turning a hobby into a chargrilled or deep-fried.” full-time career. A much-needed crunch to the dish
Martyn and his team had it spot on with the combination of fleshy-yet-melting smoked and steamed pig’s cheeks, alongside the Japanese-tinged spring greens and umeboshi. Serving this combination of wet foods in a bun may have been a step too far as the kimchi got slightly lost and saturated into the bread. This did not, however, detract from the flavours, which went together really well. Crunching on homemade purple and traditional coleslaw gave a much-needed crunch to the dish.
Devoured alongside three friends and washed down with one of Craft Beer Co’s medium ciders Pheasant Plucker at 4.5%, and a reasonable £4 a pint - Little Blue Smokehouse clearly have a great eye for food and their smoking capabilities were very well received across the board. Be on the look out for Martyn’s home smoked range of meats and other delicacies popping up in the not too distant future. To read more by Claire Beveridge, visit: placesieatbrighton.com
An ethical supermarket packed with diverse and honest selection of everyday goods Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn
HiSbe, the social start-up - an ethical and fairtrade-inspired supermarket in York Place, opposite St Peter’s Church - has been years in the making. It is the brainchild of sister team Ruth and Amy Anslow, with operational tasks headed up by Jack Simmonds. HiSbe (which stands for How It Should Be) runs as a self-funded Community Interest Company (CiC), which essentially means the company is funded and run by the local community and beyond. Via a mixture of crowd-funding, loans and equity from local
people, building work began on hiSbe and the grand opening took place on December 7 to a fanfare of positive feedback. The ethos of hiSbe is greatly different to the high street supermarkets and larger chain stores. With a focus on bringing in locally-farmed produce, including fresh fruit and vegetables from across Sussex, as well as trading fairly and ethically with other suppliers, the hiSbe store is packed with a diverse and honest selection of everyday goods for all types of shopper. Stocking everything from baked beans through to juices, meat through to cake, hiSbe has plenty on offer and welcomes you to
browse, chat and even grab a coffee in its pilot store. Let’s go kitesurfing to the highest height, with Lewis Crathern Tom Gallagher @GallagherTDG
Lewis Crathern, Sussex’s most celebrated kitesurfer, made headlines in 2010 when he harnessed 45mph winds to jump over Brighton Pier. He now travels the world with the sport he loves. I spoke to him about his passion. How long has kitesurfing been a part of your life and how did you first get into it? I have been kitesurfing for 10 years now. My parents brought me up right by the sea. But it took some time for me to see the potential in sport on the water. When I was a teenager, I was really into skating. But, at 16, I noticed the amount of windsurfing gear for sale in the Friday Ad. You could pick up kit for £20 or £30; some people were even offering it for free to get space back in their garages!
When I saw kite-surfing taking off in the distance at Lancing I knew I had to do it; the height of the jumps was so appealing. What do you enjoy most about kitesurfing? It’s such a flexible sport. Within kitesurfing, there are at least six sports - which are all very different. You can take a surfboard out one day and surf the waves, towing you in with the kite; on other days, you can fight
the gale force winds and jump higher than a house. I also love the interaction between all the kitesurfers off and on the water. You can ride right up close to your friends, spray them with water, chase each other about, and share the enjoyment of being out there. What motivates you explore new horizons in kitesurfing? I am motivated to carry on kitesurfing because of how it has
You need to be in touch with the environment
The height of the jumps appealed to Lewis
affected my life. It has taught me a way of seeing my hometown in a whole different light. I have travelled the world and met some amazing people. The thing that keeps you out there, unlike most sports, is that you can’t just do it when you want. You need to be in touch with the environment, checking the weather, hoping for the right forecast. Sometimes, you might get two weeks of no wind and it’s this natural break that keeps you passionate about the sport.
the world to represent their country in a racing-style event. It really is something watching 50 kiters all packed in tight for the start of the race, with tangles and crashes everywhere.
Where have your travels recent taken you? China has always been a country I wanted to visit and I finally made it out there to report for the Kiteshow at the IKA Course Race World Championships. The event was held in the resort of King Bay on the island of Hainan. Competitors came from all over
Tom Gallagher is a Brightonbased freelance journalist interested in travel and sport. He is founder and publisher of Sussex Active, the online magazine for anybody looking to discover new ways to get active. Visit: www.sussexactive.co.uk
■ When Lewis is in the UK, when he’s not carving up the waters in his native Lancing, he spends a lot of time in Brighton schools extolling the virtues of kitesurfing, water safety and living a fit and healthy lifestyle.

It is a very current and modern conundrum: is a personal trainer the right thing for me? And if so, where should I go to find the right one? Once reserved for the wealthy or sporting elite, personal trainers are now a must-have for health club enthusiasts, gymgoers, and the general fitness community. But as an industry, personal training has a darker underbelly, and this is felt in Brighton as strongly as anywhere else. Recently, one national newspaper ran an extraordinary
article detailing the plight of a Brighton woman who had trained in one of the corporate gym chains. She had suffered a rare muscle condition called Rhabdomyolysis, which is triggered when muscles start to break down during strenuous exercise, resulting in a toxic fluid leaking into the body, which - in
extreme cases - can cause the kidneys to fail. The condition often occurs in people injured in disasters, such as earthquakes or bombings. But it is also caused by vigorous exercise and can occur in professional athletes who overdo it, which is exactly what had happened to this unfortunate woman. Despite claiming that the exercise routines within her session were causing her discomfort, she was reminded of that old chestnut: “No pain, no gain”. This rather oldfashioned phrase is certainly not one that we endorse here at BeauPilates. In fact, we Experience and expertise are what counts
strongly oppose it. Today, 90% of health clubs offer personal training services. Undoubtedly, the personal training profession is booming. And yet, not all of the so-called specialists are properly trained: at one end of the spectrum, you may find certification requirements are as minimal as paying £200 and passing an online exam. Brighton has an abundance of personal trainers, gym-based or otherwise. But we believe it is vital to choose the right one for you. This could mean cherrypicking somebody on personality, their approach, personal skills, location, setting and so on. But we like to believe that the common denominator should be
their experience and expertise. Academic and vocational qualifications will set people apart from the common stock. All of the trainers and therapists here at BeauPilates have a strong academic background, preferably to Master’s degree level, but always to degree level. We place a strong emphasis on a tailored approach to an individual’s needs, rather than a generic session built around pushing boundaries and “breaking” bodies. PT = Personal training. Not painful torture. Paul Coneyworth is master trainer at BeauPilates, Brighton BN1 6RD. Visit: www. beaupilates.co.uk

Volvo S80 has been treated to a striking facelift
LIBRA September 24 - October 23 Your work load seems overwhelming. Roll up your sleeves, use some of that good old fashioned work ethic you possess and you will find that things will get done more quickly that you thought. You will then have time to spend with your significant other.
have to be the finest in the business.
TAURUS April 21 - May 21 You have been dealing with some feelings of insecurity of late which have made you doubt your worth. Put aside such negative ideas. Use the knowledge gained from inner reflection to catalogue your strengths. A little distance between you and your nearest and dearest will give you both time to recharge.
SCORPIO October 24 - November 22 You have been going through some challenging times of late. It is now time to put the past behind you and move forwards. Things are sometimes not all they seem and neither are people. You may be pleasantly surprised at how supportive someone can be that you previously thought was negative.
Is it practical? The S80 may look a little small compared to the German exec saloons, but inside there’s plenty of space. Up front it’s easy to get the perfect driving position thanks to the electrically-operated driver’s seat on SE and upwards models, while in the back there’s decent head and legroom. Boot space is ample too at 480 litres.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21 Keep something in reserve this week. Use your energy effectively otherwise it becomes wasted. Choose wisely the projects that require your attention and shelve those that can wait. There are big changes afoot on the romantic front in the not too distant future; a big commitment may be on its way and this week.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21 Objectivity is your byword of the week. You need to take a step back and really see a situation for what it truly is and to see yourself as others do. You can be a bit avant garde but that is part of your physical appeal and universal attraction. Don’t change something that works well for you!
CANCER June 22 - July 22 You are feeling a little disenfranchised this week. Make known your concerns and get your questions answered, you will then be able to proceed with confidence. There has been an idea that you have been working on for some time that now appears feasible.
CAPRICORN 22 December - January 20 All things energetic and physical will be of importance this week. You could be contemplating an activity holiday or simply taking the dog for a walk. Use this time wisely to upgrade your fitness level.
LEO July 23 - August 22 How’s that new relationship going? Well you won’t know unless you ask will you? Don’t be fearful, you may be pleasantly surprised at the answer you receive. All things literary are on the agenda for your social life this week, could be the theatre, concert or recital. Whatever it is you will feel culturally enriched.
AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19 Just go with the flow this week and enjoy the moment. Trying to be too analytical will just take the shine off what should prove to be a very enjoyable week and will leave you with more questions than answers. You will make better connections by doing less and letting the fun side of you show through.
VIRGO August 23 - September 23 Movement is on the agenda for the coming week and not necessarily a physical move. Changes to your relationships, work status or geographical location could be about to take place. In order to make the most of new opportunities preparation is the key. You need to feel and be in control Virgo, so get out the diary and plan.
PISCES February 20 - March 20 I know it is difficult to accept, but you are only a small part of a larger entity! I am not saying that you have no control but you do need to acknowledge your limitations. Try to understand how connections both spiritual and physical can influence your life. To feel fulfilled, work with these forces and not against them.

What is it? Only car buffs really know of the S80’s existence. That’s because it competes in a segment entirely dominated by German offerings. Want a fine-driving executive car? You buy a BMW 5 Series. Want something posh and comfortable? You buy a Mercedes-Benz E-Class. You want something to tailgate other road users with? You buy an Audi A6. The S80 has always been the thinking man’s alternative and it’s rare as a consequence. There are just three models to choose from: SE, SE Lux and Executive, and even the entry-level bristles with kit. Meanwhile, on the engine front, there are just diesels: A 113bhp 1.6, a 134bhp 2.0, a 179bhp 2.0 or a 212bhp 2.4-litre. What’s it like to drive? If you’re expecting Volvo’s luxurybarge to handle like a 5 Series, then you’ll be disappointed – it just doesn’t. But that’s no bad thing as what you do get is a beautifully

capable wafting machine. The 2.4-litre D5 model is mated with Volvo’s smooth six-speed automatic gearbox. Its distinctive five-cylinder bark is charismatic and it gives reasonable economy and emission figures too – you can expect mid-40s mpg and 159g/km in CO2 emissions.
The Volvo S80 competes in a segment entirely dominated by German offerings” What’s it like inside? This has always been Volvo’s trademark – comfortable and well-made interiors that make you realise how complicated its rivals’ cabins are. The S80 uses the V70 estate’s interior so that means a beautifully laid out centre console, good quality plastics and soft leather upholstery. The seats deserve special mention as they
Should I buy one? As much as the S80 is a great car, there’s little reason to go out and buy one new, unless you desperately want to avoid the brand associations of the big three German marques. As a consequence of BMW, Audi and Mercedes having this sector wrapped up, residual values are poor. The S80 is a very fine car, and while it’s starting to age a little, it makes a cracking used car proposition.
Motoring costs 117% more than 25 years ago Drivers now pay 117% more for vehicle tax and insurance than in 1987, research by the House of Commons Library shows. The total cost has more than doubled, even when inflation is taken into account, compared to 25 years ago. The study shows that the average annual bill a driver pays for vehicle excise duty now stands at £490, against just £100 in 1987. Insurance, which cost an average £280 a quarter of a century ago, now has a price tag of £652 for fully comprehensive cover and
£1,057 for third-party, fire and theft, the Daily Mail reported. There has also been a 64% surge in petrol and oil prices in the past 25 years, with much of the cost stemming from fuel duty. Currently, Britons pay one of the highest rates of fuel duty in Europe. On top of that, car maintenance costs have also seen a dramatic surge, rising by 57% over the same period. The only component of motoring expenses to see a decline is vehicle prices, which have contracted by 60% in real terms since 1987.

For 2014, the Volvo S80 – along with the S60, V60, XC60, V70 and XC70 – has been treated to a striking facelift. Some clever trickery has made the nose look lower and wider while at the rear the S80 gets LED lights. The interior also boasts even simpler switchgear and a new multimedia screen.

Drivers are some of the hardesthit taxpayers in Britain, said Tory MP and transport campaigner Robert Halfon, as quoted by the paper. Motorists continue to suffer from law-makers’ “trendy, anti-car green policies,” he added, urging the Chancellor to slash both vehicle excise duty and fuel duty to support cash-strapped drivers.

Matthew Upson clocked up 3,600 consecutive minutes of league action for the Albion during last week’s win over Middlesbrough – in which he scored the winning goal. Since arriving from Stoke City last season, initially on loan before signing permanently in the summer, the defender has been everpresent in the Championship, playing every minute of the last 40 Brighton games. And his Seagulls stats show just how important he has become to the side. In those 40 games Brighton have won 17 (or 42.5% of matches) and kept clean sheets in 18 (or 45%) – losing just nine times. They have also leaked just 32 goals – less than one a game. Before Upson arrived on loan the Albion’s defensive pairing of choice had been Adam El Abd and Gordon Greer – with

Lewis Dunk used sparingly to cover injuries and suspensions. As a duo, Greer and El Abd played 22 games last season preUpson – winning seven (31%), keeping six clean sheets (27%) and letting in a goal a game. And not only were those stats improved with the introduction of Upson to the Albion back line, the defender also boosted the records of both rival centre backs. Not including the recent Leicester City game in which El
Abd replaced Greer, Upson and El Abd have played ten times together – the latest being on Teeside at the weekend. The Albion won five of them (50%) and kept clean five clean sheets. And when paired with Greer, the Seagulls have an equally impressive record. In the 30 games Greer and Upson have played together they have registered a dozen wins (40%), kept 13 clean sheets (43% of games) and let in just 25 goals.

The two 19-year-old wingers played in the 2-1 defeat at Withdean, with Mollie even scoring the opening goal. Both players are exciting additions to the current squad and Elite Women and Girls’ Manager Tracy Doe is delighted to have them on board. She told seagulls.co.uk:“It’s

Huddersfield head south on the back of two defeats in a row but had been on a three-match winning streak prior to that. The Terriers could be without top-scorer James Vaughan after the striker sat out their last match with a bruised ankle bone, although manager Mark Robins said he had his fingers crossed the forward would be available. Former Brighton defender Joel Lynch will definitely be missing after a recent red card and the Yorkshire outfit will also be without captain Peter Clarke. Huddersfield have recently favoured playing three at the back and could move to within two points of the Albion with a win tomorrow (Saturday).

Brighton could have both their flying wingers back in contention for tomorrow’s visit of Huddersfield Town. Seagulls supporters bid a fond farewell to Craig Conway this week as the Cardiff City winger returned to his parent squad after an encouraging spell on the south coast and the club remain hopeful a deal can be struck to bring him back to Sussex in the new year. But the blow of losing the increasingly-influential wide player has been softened by the news Kazenga Lua Lua looks ready to replace him in the starting lineup. The left wing speed merchant has been missing from the match day squad in recent weeks but has come through training unscathed and is a likely starter. And fellow winger Will Buckley should also be involved – albeit from the bench where he should be joined by talismanic striker Leo Ulloa who was reintroduced to the fray as a late replacement in last week’s win at Middlesbrough. Peter Brezovan and Adam El Abd will be ready to once again fill in for the injured Tomasz Kuszczak and Gordon Greer if, as expected, they fail to recover from their respective injuries in time.
