VOGUE GYRATORY NIGHTMARE: IS THIS REALLY THE SOLUTION? Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy The end of the Vogue Gyratory nightmare is in sight. Or is it? Brighton and Hove transport planners appear to believe so. A six-feet-wide cycle lane - and a “floating” bus stop for bendybuses - are the cornerstone of proposals to go to city councilors next month. The proposals are the final project in the city by Robin Reed, the principal transport planner behind the controversial changes to Lewes Road and Seven Dials. Mr Reed, who has an MSc in transport and sustainable development from Imperial College London, is leaving for the private sector next month when he joins Mott MacDonald, a consultancy firm, in East Croydon. The main features proposed for the Vogue Gyratory system are: ■ a continuous six-feet-wide cycle lane, northbound through the gyratory system;

■ introduction of a “floating bus stop” just south of the Sainsbury’s supermarket - with the six-feetwide cycle lane going behind it to prevent buses crossing the path of cyclists – and to allow Service 25 bendy-buses, for the first time, to call at the stop; >> Continued on page 3

Six-feet-wide cycle lane plan for city’s nightmare junction > Continued from page 1 Other proposals for the gyratory system include: ■ more space at the entrance and exits of the gyratory, to provide room for cyclists and vehicles to move through the junction without coming into conflict or causing delay; ■ improved and simplified pedestrian crossings; ■ replacement traffic signals, designed to improve efficiency and traffic flow; ■ advanced green light at traffic lights for cyclists, give a three-second head-start to cyclists “to reduce conflict”.

The initial proposals for The Vogue Gyratory - developed as part of the Lewes Road improvement scheme - were supported through public consultation last year. Because of concerns, however, over the likely negative impact on journey times for buses and general traffic, the original plans were agreed. Revised proposals have been finalised and will be presented to the council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee on Tuesday, January 14 2014. Subject to approval and funding, the changes are expected in the spring. Green councillor Ian

Davey, the lead councillor for transport, told Brighton & Hove Independent: “Improving The Vogue Gyratory was always going to be challenging. “However, I think the proposal offers something for everyone. The simplified junctions, replacement - and even removal - of traffic signals, wider pavement, new bus stop, and dedicated northbound cycle lane should help to make the area better and safer for everybody, however they are travelling.” A cycle lane will be in front of raised pedestrian pavements outside Sainsbury’s car park

The road from pornography to gyratory The junction of Lewes Road, Bear Road, Hollingdean Road, and Upper Lewes Roads is known as the “Vogue Gyratory system” after the former Vogue Cinema. Built as the Gaiety in 1937 - in the grounds of the then Allen Arms - the cinema had a 50-foot-high neon-lit façade. In November 1965, it was renamed the Ace; in January 1968, it became a full-time bingo hall. Films, however, were presented again from December 1969; in 1971, the

name was changed to the Vogue. The building later became a pornographic film club, with regular striptease acts. In 1979, the 1,500-seat Vogue was renamed the Classic after that cinema in Western Road had closed. It closed in October 1980. The new road layout opened in the summer of 1984. The Sainsbury’s supermarket opened on April 23 1985, on the site of the railway viaduct and Arthur H Cox’s pill factory. The supermarket won the 1985

Brighton Council design award with its “warehouse” style, the arches of its walls echoing those of the former viaduct. Information from Jennifer Drury, www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk

Unique partnership aims at tackling youth unemployment A new scheme to allow students to showcase their CVs to potential employers has been launched by City College and BrightonandHoveJobs.com. Students can upload their CVs for free to BrightonandHoveJobs.com, allowing local companies to search for particular skills and qualifications for no charge whatsoever. By using the service, employers can enter specific keywords and view CVs, giving students a better chance of securing the perfect job with employers who may not have previously known of their availability. The partnership is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK; it is evidence of a commitment by City

College Brighton and Hove and BrightonandHoveJobs. com to help reduce youth unemployment and promote local economic growth. Gary Peters, founder of BrightonandHoveJobs. com, said: “The CV search function provides a fantastic opportunity for City College students to get ahead of the game when looking for a job and to ensure their CV lands on an employer’s desks even before the application stage. We really feel it hands them a powerful advantage in the hugely competitive job market. “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with the college to deliver

this scheme which adds real value to the career advice and assistance students receive. “ Kate Edwards, City College’s head of student services, said: “This is a fantastic resource for our students. Aside from our commitment to giving students employability skills and making them work-ready, it’s vital that we’re always looking at new ways of creating more opportunities for them to find employment once they’ve finished their courses.”

Ronan Keating praises the work of Able and Willing after it delivers embroidered sweaters to Boyzone Ronan Keating, the singersongwriter, has praised speciallycommissioned embroidery work done for him by Able and Willing (A&W), a supported social enterprise for people with disabilities run by Brighton and Hove City Council The pop star was visiting Brighton for a Boyzone reunion concert at the Brighton Centre, when he decided to give the rest of the band sweaters with their names embroidered on them for Christmas. He called A&W, which employs people with a variety of disabilities and specialises in embroidery, printing and providing garments for a wide range of businesses and organisations. After placing his order on the morning of the show, he took delivery of the sweaters in the evening before the show. Jeff White, A&W’s business manager, said: “Ronan’s order and visit was a lovely surprise. He couldn’t have been nicer - very down

to earth and more than happy to pose for photos with our staff. “Turning his order round on the same day wasn’t easy but we always try to cater for our customers’ needs so we pulled out all the stops for him. “He said he was delighted with the excellent quality of our embroidery and really grateful to us for turning his order round so quickly. “His visit and the very nice things he has said about our work have given everyone here a big festive lift.” Opposition councillors fear A&W’s future is at risk, because proposed cuts in the funding it receives from the city council. Earlier this month, Councillor Warren Morgan, leader of the Labour Group on the council, asked officers to look at putting more council procurement through A&W to

Serving the public over the Christmas holiday Seafront workers watching for Christmas Day swimmers, homeless hostel workers making sure rough sleepers have a meal and bed for the night, and “urban shepherds” herding sheep. While families across the city enjoyed Christmas lunch, scores of council workers and registered volunteers were on hand providing a range of services. Seafront officers were on duty on the day itself since the Brighton Christmas Day dip has ballooned from just 50 swimmers and onlookers 10 years ago to the thousands that take part and enjoy the spectacle now. Meanwhile, in the city itself, workers from the rough-sleeper team engaged with those in doorways and on the streets to check they had an offer of somewhere warm to go where they could get advice, food and - if needed - a bed for the night. In St James’s Street, six workers ensured the 24 homeless residents of one of three council-run hostels New Steine Mews - enjoyed festive spirit. City council staff gave more than 100 presents, which meant many homeless

residents had two or three presents each. Residents had a full Christmas dinner and a quiz before presents were handed out. Out on the fringes of the city, 62-year-old Vivien was one of eight “urban shepherds” checking the sheep grazing the city’s ancient pastures. She said: “It’s a lovely way to get out into the countryside and I have knitted jumpers from the leftover wool that has been shorn and then spun for me.” Council leader Jason Kitcat said: “Christmas is a time for family and celebration so its heart warming to hear about Brighton and Hove City Council workers and others that take time out to make sure residents and visitors to the city are happy and safe.”

support its long-term viability. In response, officers said they would investigate what additional business the council could provide to A&W. To find out more about Able and Willing, visit: ableandwilling.org.uk

Delaying the deadline for the switchover to digital radio is the right decision Graham Chainey

It is good news that Ed Vaizey, the culture minister, has bowed to popular feeling, and common sense, in deferring the setting of any deadline for a total switchover to digital radio. Back in 2010, the Labour government decreed - and the decision was rushed through in the “wash-up” at the dissolution of a parliament without proper debate - that all radios must be digital by 2015. But it now looks as if we can all keep our trusty analogue sets for the foreseeable future after all. Take-up of digital apparatus has not been as fast as the government, and the industry, had hoped. Only about one third of radios are currently digital. There are several good reasons why I believe switching off analogue transmissions and compelling everyone to go digital would be a disaster. In the first place, digital reception remains patchy and poor, especially in rural and remote areas (though even in London DAB can be erratic), with one critic likening it at times to “the sounds of boiling mud”. About 10 per cent of households can’t receive it at all, while in-car reception is notoriously prone to break-up. The technology, many feel, is not yet up to scratch. Secondly, many critics consider digital tone quality to be less good. The signal tends to be shallow and bland, and in particular unsuitable for classical music, as broadcast by Radio 3 or Classic FM. Thirdly, there is an irritating two-second delay in reception, so that all time signals would in future be inaccurate. Try listening

Only one in three radios is digital

to two radios in the same room, one tuned to analogue and the other to digital. Fourthly, DAB is less environmentally friendly, as it requires more electrical power in order to function, so batteries will last less long and electrical bills will be higher. At a time when we’re being obliged (by European Union diktat) to use low-energy light bulbs, it seems inconsistent that we should be obliged to use higher-energy radio sets. Fifthly, switching off analogue would result in some 100 million household radios and 30 million car radios being scrapped, a ludicrous waste and expense at a time of austerity and heightened green awareness. The electronics industry may welcome such a prospect with salivating glee but the average listener is likely to resent having to throw out beloved and perfectly sound instruments and spend hundreds of pounds on replacements. Sixthly, statistics show that 94 per cent of radio listeners

are perfectly satisfied with the current service and are not crying out for change. At the moment we have choice: the 2010 proposal would have removed that choice. Seventhly, many local stations might have to close down as a result of the changeover. Following the 2010 announcement, the directors of a number of local stations, including Daniel Nathan, of Brighton and Hove Radio Ltd, wrote opposing the switchover, saying “more than 100 local commercial radio stations are unable to move on to digital and are therefore consigned to FM, where we face the prospect of being starved of listeners and advertising revenues.” Mr Nathan maintained FM radio “remains the most robust, globally accepted and costeffective broadcast technology”. I remember, when I was a boy, my parents had an old Bakelite wireless on the dial of which were exotic foreign names: Monte Carlo, Luxembourg, Vatican City, Algiers, Athens. I used to be particularly fond of listening to Radio Baden Baden. You don’t seem to get that range of choice on modern sets, and you certainly won’t find it on any digital set, which only give you British stations. As I’m fond of saying, most alleged examples of technological progress turn out on closer scrutiny to be, in human terms, retro-progress.

Southern reports there are six complaints for every 100,000 passenger journeys Frank le Duc @BHcitynews The main train operator serving Brighton, Hove and Portslade has the lowest rate of customer complaints outside London. Southern received six complaints per 100,000 passenger journeys, according to the latest figures released by the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR). The rate for July, August and September – the second quarter of 2013-14 – compares with five complaints per 100,000 passenger journeys in the same quarter a year earlier. Only London Overground had a better rate, with two complaints per 100,000 passenger journeys. The ORR said that the rate for First Capital Connect had dropped from 18 complaints per 100,000 passenger journeys in the second quarter last year to 16 this year. Southern reportedly paid passengers £805,000 in

compensation for delays in 201213. First Capital Connect, which operates the Thameslink route from Brighton, paid out £722,000 in 2012-13 – an increase of £85,000 on the previous year. The company blamed Network Rail, which owns the infrastructure such as tracks and stations. The payments were made under the “Delay Repay” scheme for passengers whose journeys are delayed by more than 30 minutes. If a passenger is delayed by between half an hour and an hour, she is entitled to compensation worth 50% of the relevant single fare. If a passenger is delayed by more than an hour, she is entitled to compensation worth the price of a single ticket or half the price of a return fare. Southern was reported to have said that growing awareness of the scheme had led to a rise in the number of claims.

Memory Maps Lisa St Aubin de Teran I first stumbled across this author at exactly the right age. I find that helps at lot with books. The right book at the right age can stay with you for life. I have often read a book and been baffled why the critics are shouting from the rooftops about it. Give it five years is my advice, and try again. You may be surprised. Lisa St Aubin de Teran’s first novel, Slow Train to Milan, had me hooked from the start. It’s a thinly-disguised memoir about her bumping into, quite literally, a middle-aged Venezuelan man in Abbeyville Road in London when she was 16 - and marrying him two years later. They then have a road trip, well train trip, around Italy. It’s pretty wonderful. It certainly is when you’re 16.

At a more mature age, it still has a certain charm. Memory Maps certainly has buckets of charm. It’s a wonderful journey through all the places that the author has lived and loved: the Andes where she lived a hellish life on an enormous hacienda with said middle-aged Venezuelan man - who turned out to be an aristocrat with severe personality problems - where the growing of avocados and sugar cane ruled her life to finding solace in a massive bank of lilies growing on the banks of the river where she would escape to. Then there are the rooftops of Bologna, where you can almost feel the heat oozing from the terracotta tiles. It makes me want to grab my passport and revisit some of the places that I have loved and lived too. Happy travelling.

First Capital Connect was reported to have blamed Network Rail for more than half the delays. Network Rail said that it was investing in longer platforms and new signalling on the network. Southern is the main operator serving the city of Brighton and Hove

A key conclusion of the investigation is contained in a single paragraph: “In the view of the Investigating Officer the action of an elected Member urging a shop to continue to sell images which are broadly acknowledged to cause offence to members of the BME Community and which has been brought to that Member’s attention as having such an effect may amount to a racist act, even though it does not cause or incite racial hatred.”

Leaving aside the assertion of what constitutes “a racist act”, the use of the word “urging” is not without controversy. Some 12 weeks after she met the investigating officer, Cllr Barnett endured last week’s secret inquisition. After which, a “star chamber” of three councillors found Cllr Barnett guilty - while noting her apology and deciding equalities training should be mandatory for all councillors. In its reasons, the panel - in a

We accept that this was inadvertent and that it was not intended to cause offence.” This week, the secrecy continued.

Tell us what you think about the investigation into Councillor Barnett |

Councillor Christine Summers, one of the three councillors who comprised the “star chamber” panel, issued a statement to Brighton & Hove Independent. Cllr Summers, a former Green Party councillor who was expelled by her party after her opposition to same-sex marriage, said: “I’m really sorry but, since the hearing was held entirely in private, I am not at liberty to say anything remotely substantial except that where a collective decision is required that is presented in a

simple ‘for or against’ format, the many competing arguments and opinions expressed in deliberation are never reflected in the outcome. It was a very close call.” And that, perhaps, says all you need to know about the curious case of the councillor and the golliwog – and a council that brought itself into disrepute. ■ Brighton & Hove Independent has published the full report of the investigation into Cllr Dawn Barnett: http://bit.ly/1c1Y10j

Balanced legislation is needed to restore public confidence in the political system Simon Kirby @SimonKirbyMP

taken on board, and improved the legislation. These amendments provided clarification and reassurance to charities, voluntary organisations and community groups that their normal engagement with the political system will not be regulated, unless it specifically promotes the election of a candidate or party over another. I know people in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven will support the fundamental aim of the legislation, to clean up politics and ensure people and organisations seeking to influence the outcome of a general election are transparent when they are doing so. I also agree, however, with my constituents that it is important to strike the right balance so that no one in the charitable sector feels their right to campaign is being impeded. I’m pleased that more time has been allowed for consultation

NE W

I am sure that most people will agree that it is absolutely crucial that we improve transparency in politics. The Transparency of Lobbying Bill was introduced to the House of Commons in July as one part of the wider effort to restore public confidence in the political system, which has been eroded over many years for a variety of reasons. One reason is a lack of transparency, particularly surrounding the lobbying industry, which David Cameron identified as an area for potential scandal while in opposition. The fundamental objectives of the Transparency of Lobbying Bill are widely supported. The bill aims to make it clear who is lobbying the government and for whom; to make third-party campaigning at election times

subject to clear rules; and to provide assurance that trade unions know who their members are. As the MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, I have received correspondence from constituents and charities who are concerned with part two of the bill, which deals with third party campaigning. These concerns relate to the potential unintended consequences the bill might have for charitable organisations campaigning on an issue in the run up to an election. There are a lot of fantastic charities in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven that carry out vital work on behalf of my constituents. I take their comments very seriously, and I have always been sure to make ministers aware of their input and the level of concern has surrounded the bill. I believe the amendments made to the bill in October show that these criticisms have been

I know that there is a public meeting in my constituency to discuss the bill in January, and I will try to attend if my diary allows. The more I think about it, the more I realise we must stop the domino effect by getting people back to playing (physical) dominoes and talking in person. Remember the days when, as a child, people used to ask what your hobbies were? These days I am pretty certain if you tried that question many youngsters would need to check the meaning of the word on their mobile phone before responding. I

I doubt somehow this tide of electronic inactivity will enhance our society in the long term and I fear that what we see now is just a taster of what is in store for us in the electronic future. I am truly glad I experienced my childhood in the days of the pre-electronic past and wish for all our sakes that a time will come when the human race can return to trusting their own judgement rather than constantly turning to a computer.

A record number of complaints about dogfouling were made to Brighton and Hove City Council. But - out of 432 complaints only two fixed-penalty notices were issued.

Two six-bedroom detached houses in one of the most-sought-after addresses in Hove - built as a matching pair in 2001, in an acre of land - went on sale at £6.5 million.

An exclusive analysis by Brighton & Hove Independent gave the clearest insight yet into the boom in city house prices. It revealed the average price of a home was £298,407.

HUNDREDS OF REFUSE WORKERS in Brighton and Hove have voted overwhelmingly for strike action in a long-running row over pay with the council. Members of the GMB union at Brighton and Hove City Council will walk out from 14-20 June after backing stoppages by 96%, with further strikes planned. The union said its members, who work in refuse, recycling and street cleaning, face cuts of up to £4,000 a year under plans to revise pay and conditions at the local authority. GMB official Mark Turner said: “A 96% vote in favour of industrial action clearly shows that the workforce are determined to fight these unfair cuts. “Employees have delivered over

Rubbish piled up last month when workers walked out on an unofficial strike for two days after the council began a 90-day consultation about proposed changes to overtime rates and other allowances. The Bad A handful of satirical digs aside, the majority of the jokes feel forced and you can feel the filmmakers struggling to repeat the successful formula of the first film. Basically, you know you’re in trouble when the best joke in the sequel (a celebrity cameo-heavy gangfight) was also

the best joke in the original. On top of that, too many of the jokes fall painfully flat and the film is a good twenty minutes too long, clocking in at just under two hours. Worth seeing? As sequels go, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is watchable enough, but it lacks the spark of the original film and feels lazy and self-indulgent throughout, while unfortunately failing to deliver any properly big laughs like the first film.

The places I eat

And the winners are…

the best places to eat in Brighton 2013 Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn

My brain is an encyclopedia of knowledge about Brighton and Hove food establishments. So whittling down my favourites of 2013 has not been an easy task. With perseverance, however, and lots of reflection on the past 12 months, I have compiled my “Best of 2013” - plus a runner-up for some categories. No bribes were accepted (nor offered, sadly) and all listings are my own personal choices. For more favourites - including best street food and best takeaway - see next week’s Brighton & Hove Independent. Meanwhile, here’s to another fantastic year and well done to you all!

Best restaurant Winner: Little Fish Market, 10 Upper Market Street, Hove Joint runners-up: Coal Shed and Gingerman This was an incredibly difficult decision to make. We have seen a host of fantastic additions to the city, as well as consistency from old favourites. But, open less than a year, the Little Fish Market has impressed me enough to award them my “Best Restaurant” accolade. Head chef Duncan Ray blew me away with his clean presentation, expansive knowledge, passion, and a locally-caught fish menu that screams high quality, great technical ability and - above

all else – well-thought-out and freshly-prepared dishes. Expect to find a small yet exquisite menu that changes with the tide. Personal highlights include the pan-fried monkfish with pork belly, carrot and star anise puree, squid and pine nuts, plus a crab risotto so rich, smooth and melting that I’m yet to dare order another starter from the menu as I wouldn’t want to miss an opportunity to eat this dish time and time again. Coupled with the front-of-house team of one, the charming Rob Ford, the two create a welcoming atmosphere and play host to impeccable service. Little Fish Market is a must visit for anyone wanting to sample some Michelin level cooking from a truly remarkable and passionate chef. ■ Average spend: Three courses, wine and service charge, up to £60 per person. ■ Good to know: Cash only; book far in advance. ■ Great for: Romantic evenings, friend and family get-togethers, impressing visitors, fish-lovers, special occasions.

Best burger Winner: The Trolls Pantry, 16 Circus Street, Brighton Runner-up: The New Club Not much surprise in this category. Since I took my first bite at Street Diner last May, I was hooked. Head chef and owner Paul Clark really knows how to work flavour combinations that are in tune with

the seasons and cook up a sterling pattie made from free-range 35-day-aged Longhorn steak. This, combined with foraged, handmade sauces, local cheeses and a steamed brioche bun are burger perfection. Stand-outs include the Woodland Burger - wild garlic and sorrel salad, wild garlic mayo, forest honey and mustard sauce and smoked foresters cheese and the much-loved Troll’s Stinky Breath - Troll Stink Sauce (anchovy, Brighton blue cheese, Sussex beer, The best restaurant awarded to: Little Fish Market, 10 Upper Market Street, Hove garlic), St Giles cheese, salad, onion, garlic mayo, gherkins. Rare, medium or well done, long may The Troll feed the townsfolk his magical concoctions! ■ Average spend: £8 for a burger. ■ Good to know: Serves burgers at Hobgoblin every evening and all day Saturday. Chesapeake Bay

Great Chesapeake Bay: An open-water adventure to approach with care Tom Gallagher @GallagherTDG

There cannot be many openwater swims in which success is often as much to do with the study of maritime markers and sea conditions as pure athleticism in the water. But a quick glance at the Thomas Point Lighthouse in Maryland may give an indication of what’s in store for the swimmers taking part in the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim. Chesapeake Bay is a vast body of water; an estuary that laps the shores of the states of Virginia and Maryland while Delaware’s arm protects it from the Atlantic Ocean. Its rivers and tributaries make the Chesapeake look almost fjord-like. But, for those who have competed in this most uncompromising of events, the bay is anything but benign. On paper, this 4.4-mile sea swim would seem fairly straightforward. The race starts from the shores of Sandy Point State Park, which is about five

miles northeast of Annapolis, and finishes at a small sandy beach on Kent Island. Competitors are divided into two waves, approximately 15 minutes apart and the course extends eastward between the two spans of the behemoth William Preston Lane Jr Memorial Bridge. The currents and rips that swirl and broil beneath the bridge must be tackled by an experienced hand. “It is a pioneering event in open-water swimming on the east coast of the United States and

the body of water is legendary,” explains Brian Earley, who founded the event in the 1980. To be accepted to compete, applicants must submit documentation that they have either completed a recent openwater event or completed a threemile pool swim in less than two hours 15 minutes. Brian Earley is all too aware of the perilous conditions that often mark the event. Earley first conquered Chesapeake Bay in 1982 after and because of - the death of his father. In a spirited and poignant

act of remembrance, the young varsity swimmer soloed the five miles across the bay and returned the following year - and has done so every year thereafter, to raise money for charity. In 1991, when participant numbers reached almost 900, The Great Chesapeake Bay Swim almost ended in tragedy. The geography of the bay, the location of the bridge and tidal extremes exacerbated by wind and salinity means that conditions can be treacherous. The timing of the race is critical to ensure a favourable tide. In 1991, with the timing off and conditions in the bay under-estimated, hundreds of swimmers found themselves facing full tidal currents in the middle section of the course. Unable to cope with the exhausting flow, only 164 of the

near 900 competitors who set out completed the swim. The rest, fortunately, were picked up by coastguard and other boats in the area, having been swept aside by the force of the surge. One swimmer was picked up three miles down the bay. The extreme nature of the swim is part of its allure as is its location. Situated close to New York and Atlantic City, Chesapeake Bay is also an area of outstanding natural beauty. Tom Gallagher is a Brightonbased freelance journalist interested in travel and sport. Pretty Good Thinking

Sarah Morgan @sarah_morgan

Facing up to harsh midwinter - by going a little bit balmy Your skin - and wallet - deserve extra support during the season of goodwill. The combination of biting winds, chilly mornings, office central heating, pub firesides and an optional dose of celebratory drinking means your face will probably struggle to hide the ravages of having had a really good time. This time of year nearly always creates dehydration. Lips become papery - they can’t make any oil for themselves;, foreheads feel tighter - even without a hangover;

and scalps flake out. So how come the Scandinavians hurl themselves into the grog every bit as much as we do, yet they manage to “glow” across the ski slopes? They go in for facial oils, that’s how. Little Miracle Rosehip Serum (£12.99) lives up to its name, by BalmBalm.com. Very quickly absorbed, light and non-greasy, it includes 30mls of rosehip, jojoba and borage oils, deliciously infused with frankincense, rose geranium, palmarosa, juniper and mandarin essential oils.

Award-winning Rose Geranium Face Balm

The Soil Association’s Best Skincare Award went to 100% organic, 100% natural, not tested on animals Rose Geranium Face Balm. I am never without a tube. What is more, at £6.99 for 30mls, it is a true handbag hero - packed with shea butter, sunflower, beeswax, jojoba, calendula and rose geranium essential oil. Try the fragrance-free or teatree versions to skip on girly aromas. The packaging is carbon neutral and FSC compliant with

organic inks. I just can’t fault it! Indulge yourself with a quick ritual when you use this face balm: warm a generous dollop in the hands to slick over your face neck and ears, with a top-up for lips and brows to deliver a fullyrecharged complexion. Do give it time to sink in deeply overnight, if you want to; don’t be put off by the texture, which may get a bit crystalline in the cold. It is see-through and melts fast to penetrate really deeply.

Finally, if you are planning on loitering under the mistletoe and your lips are badly peeling, try this easy free grooming tip at home before you go out: Carefully rub around your mouth with a dry flannel to exfoliate without the risk of shredding or splitting the thinner skin. Then go barmy! I’ll be back in 2014 to look at Aubrey Organics and Brighton’s own Organic Botanics, among others. Have a naturally happy New Year!

These are the reasons why there is often surprisingly little sense of occasion to match the stage-managed fanfare you find when new metal is introduced to the likes of us. Few would argue about the towering stature of, say, the Porsche 911, BMW 3-series or Ford Fiesta among their peers. When you witness the covers coming off a new version of any of them, you know that you’re seeing something important. But you also know that it happens fairly regularly – every six or seven years, without fail. By the time you’ve seen two or three new Fiestas or 3-series take their bow, each individual one seems that bit less of an event. Something new, sure, but a landmark? Not necessarily. It’s 40 years, though, since Jaguar phased out the model that most would consider its last proper sports car and probably it’s biggest sporting legend: the E-type. Thereafter, Jaguar moved on to make larger grand touring cruisers like the XJS and XK8 instead. But then, this year, it rekindled its sporting flame. The short list is announced for Car of the Year 2014 The seven-car shortlist for the 2014 Car of the Year award has been announced. The jury is looking for ‘the most outstanding new car to go on sale in the last 12 months.’ The seven contenders for the Car of the Year award this time are: - BMW i3 - the first branch of BMW’s family of electric ‘iCars’, to bear fruit, available in full EV and range-extender form. - Citroen C4 Picasso - Citroen isn’t giving up on the good old MPV despite the onslaught of new crossovers.

- Mazda 3 - the third-gen 3 family hatchback is lighter than before thanks to Mazda’s energy-saving ‘SkyActiv’ tech, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. - Mercedes S-class - the new S-class, always a benchmark for innovation and private jet luxury on wheels. - Peugeot 308 - It’s smarter to look at, has a cabin so minimalist it could be displayed in the Louvre as modern art, and is lighter, than any French family hatch before it. - Skoda Octavia - The new Octavia is based on the VW Group’s

ARIES March 21 - April 20 You will need to utilise your people skills this week when dealing with colleagues and peers. You feel someone is feeding you a line but in fact they may be just misinformed so treat them with diplomacy but what they say with caution.

LIBRA September 24 - October 23 Headless chicken springs to mind this week. You may have to make sacrifices or compromises in one area of your life in order to devote time to another. A declaration of love or something that closely resembles one may be made this week.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21 Feeling a little bit of a square peg in a round hole this week? Or perhaps you have been feeling this way for some time. You now realise that maybe you just have to make too many personal sacrifices to fit in. Try to be true to yourself and if people don’t like it, then it’s their loss.

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22 You can’t quite believe your luck. You could be invited into that exclusive club you have always wanted to be part of. You are now amongst the big boys. This has little to do with luck and everything to do with your strengths, hang on to that thought as you rub shoulders with the movers and shakers!

GEMINI May 22 - June 21 Emotionally you are sitting at the top of the roller coaster. But remember after the drop comes the exhilarating rise. Stick with the plan; maintain your confidence and all should be well. If single remember you are not so much two timing as checking out your options.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21 Domestic issues are at the forefront of your mind this week. It’s decision time. So stop procrastinating, gather your thoughts, catalogue the information you have and act. A word of caution, the scientific approach is good but when dealing with the affairs of the heart remember the heart!

CANCER June 22 - July 22 This is a week for treading water; don’t rush into anything too quickly on either the domestic or career front. Better to let things unfold naturally and then you can make a more informed decision on where you are going.

CAPRICORN 22 December - January 20 Last week was all about listening this week you need to talk. It may be at work or home but at some point this week you will need to have “a conversation” in order to straighten things out. Be up front and don’t cloud the issues.

LEO July 23 - August 22 Don’t get involved in petty arguments this week, whatever the temptation. If you really have to make a stand and put your head above the parapet make sure it is for something worthwhile. Leave others to fight their own battles. There could be some misunderstanding with a loved one this week!

AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19 Things are still looking good this week and you feel excited by what you can see in the future. There is only one fly in the ointment and that is you may be tempted to spend too much time on those matters that stimulate your interest and not enough on time on other things. Forewarned is forearmed.

VIRGO August 23 - September 23 Your future may be in the lap of the gods but your present is and should be firmly under your control. You will need to be proactive this week and not just sit back and let things happen. Because remember the devil makes work for idle hands! Time to reenergize your partnerships by shaking things up a little!

PISCES February 20 - March 20 It’s no good sitting on the fence. People on both sides may end up trying to knock you off and then where will you be? You need to make your own mind up with regard to certain issues and then communicate this directly and emphatically. Do this and you will have the support of those who matter most.

Bridcutt bid could make it unhappy New Year for fans Richard Morris

Brighton fans are bracing themselves for a nerve-wracking January amid growing reports that former boss Gus Poyet is keen on adding Liam Bridcutt to his Sunderland squad. As reported in the Brighton & Hove Independent earlier this year, sources on Wearside are adamant that Poyet will return to Sussex for Bridcutt when the transfer window re-opens in the New Year. And earlier this week, The Telegraph’s John Percy reported the Black Cats are planning a £2million plus raid on The Amex. Bridcutt became a key player in Poyet’s successful Albion side after initially signing on a short-term deal following his release from Chelsea and has been crowned Albion player of the year for the last two seasons. Brighton chairman Tony

Liam Bridcutt has again been linked with a January move north

Bloom has already resisted Premier League advances for the Albion midfielder, with a near £2million summer bid by Crystal Palace knocked back. The Seagulls are likely to demand north of £3million for the player although the prospect of a double deal for him and Leo

Ulloa is not out of the question. Poyet spent more than a year trailing the Argentinian striker before finally bring him to the south coast and his Sunderland side lacks a talismanic striker. A joint bid upwards of £8million for the two players could prove very hard to resist for the Albion.

Albion fans and AITC help share the warmth Hundreds of items of winter clothes were donated by Albion fans before last Saturday’s game at the Amex as part of an initiative to help keep the city’s homeless warm over the winter. The Share the Warmth campaign, the brainchild of local businesswomen and Hove residents Gaynor Williams and Jenny Barrett, has been collecting unwanted winter clothes from the public in the run up to Christmas at points across the city. The campaign has linked up with AITC and students from the charity’s NCS (National Citizen Service)

programme who have been volunteering for the project over the two weeks. The students, who completed the NCS programme in October, were out in force on Saturday collecting items from fans. AITC staff have also been helping collect donations from across the city and delivering them to local homeless charities. Gaynor Williams from Share the Warmth said: “We had a fantastic response from Albion fans on Saturday as we’ve had from the public across the city who have donated everything from coats, fleeces and blankets

to gloves, hats and scarves. With the help of AITC we have now started passing the clothing we have collected to various homeless charities that we are working so they can get them to homeless people for the winter months ahead. “ People can still donate winter clothes by e-mailing Gaynor at gaynorsian@yahoo.com. Straight from the commentary box Once the general mayhem of the Christmas period is over and we look towards 2014, the football landscape will no doubt be dominated by the transfer market in January. As the New Year push on the pitch continues with League and Cup games, matters off the pitch can enhance or disrupt a season. It is always difficult to assess the impact of the window but this time we can assume Albion will be bracing themselves for some approaches for their players. As is stands the Seagulls squad looks solid with decent cover in most positions. The main attractions are likely to be player of the last 2 seasons Liam Bridcutt, out of contract at the end of the season Ashley Barnes and the man known as the Cyclone; Leonardo Ulloa. Former Albion boss Gus Poyet has been reported to be interested in Bridcutt who has returned to action after an

attracting interest from Burnley. His contract situation remains an issue but a move to a fellow Championship club would not seem as likely.

Interest is expected for Liam Bridcutt

In the market there seems to be more midfielders available and with the emergence of the promising Rohan Ince at the Amex, Keith Bloom may have to Andrews available have his best poker face on and if the price is the departure of as he prepares for interest right, Bridcutt is probably in his talented squad” the most likely, if any, to happen. It’s easy to see why any player would want injury lay-off. The Uruguayan to play in the top-flight or any brought Ulloa to the Amex but chairman would want to take he has also had limited game a good price. Tony Bloom has time in recent weeks. regularly stated his reluctance So what factors should we to buy in January but he may consider when analysing any have to have his best poker face possible movement? Albion on as he prepares for interest would surely be unwilling in his talented squad. I imagine to aid any approaches from Oscar Garcia, like the fans, will Sunderland bearing in mind want it to remain intact, ready Poyet’s acrimonious departure. for a tilt at the top six in 2014. However, chairman Tony Bloom is an astute businessman and as we often hear, everyone has their Happy New Year, JC. price. We played much better than Huddersfield and we deserved to win; we did everything but score. “We played really well, and I was really pleased, but we could not put the ball in the net. We have to improve our conversion rate but the way we will improve is by continuing to play well and create chances. “Hopefully in the next game we will be more accurate. “The conditions made it more difficult to play but I really don’t think the weather influenced the result today. “Now we have a lot of players fit enough to play and we have a lot of games coming up, so we will try to pick the best eleven to win each game.”

Adam El Abd has had a chance to impress following an injury to Gordon Greer

Agustien, who has missed much of the season through injury – showed some much-needed creative spark against the Terriers, albeit before fading slightly prior to his second half substitution. Rohan Ince and Liam Bridcutt are highly likely to feature alongside each other against Blackpool on Sunday, with Oscar favouring a more defensive-minded approach away from home. Adam El Abd – pressed into action after the recent injury to Seagulls captain Greer – has impressed alongside the ever-solid and influential Matthew Upson, and can consider himself unlucky

if he makes way without a drastic drop in form or suspension. Blackpool will offer a testing opposition for the Albion defence, with Thomas Ince again among the division’s leading attacking talents. Stephen Dobbie – signed by Brighton before subsequently being transferred to arch rivals Crystal Palace – will operate behind a lone striker in a formation not unlike that preferred by Oscar. Dan Gosling and Neil Bishop offer other attacking options for the home team, with the former a one-time Everton prospect tipped for future stardom now on loan from Newcastle United.

(Talking after the Huddersfield draw)

Brighton head to Blackpool on Sunday hoping to cement their place in the play-off picture against a Tangerines team in apparent free-fall. Prior to yesterday’s game with Leeds United, Paul Ince’s charge had lost four games in a row – leaking ten goals in the process. A win against Blackpool would further strengthen Albion’s growing promotion aspirations – particularly as the Seagulls’ previously busy treatment room begins to empty. Leo Ulloa, used as a substitute against both Middlesbrough and Huddersfield Town, could be considered for a starting role in favour of Ashley Barnes, who misfired badly in the 0-0 with Mark Robins’ dogged Huddersfield team. Much though will depend on his selection in South London yesterday, with a number of players unlikely to be up to two highly competitive games in such a short space of time. Will Buckley, Ulloa, Kemy Agustien and Gordon Greer – if fit to return from injury – are among those likely to be eased through the Christmas period by Oscar Garcia who showed his intentions to rest players when he gave Andrew Crofts a day off last time out at The Amex.

Rampaging right back Bruno was the fans’ pick for man of the match against Huddersfield and his performances have been steadily improving in recent weeks. The former Valencia defender has begun working well in tandem with fellow Spaniard David Lopez on the Seagulls’ right flank. Skilful and composed in possession, Bruno adds an attacking aspect to the Albion defence.
