REVEALED: RECORD NUMBER OF PROPERTY MILLIONAIRES EXCLUSIVE

A record number of homes worth more than £1 million have changed hands in Brighton and Hove, according to the latest Land Registry data.

In just 11 months to December 1 last year, a total of 35 £1m-plus properties changed hands, equalling the previous annual record set in the whole of 2012.

Their aggregate value was £47.9m.

The most expensive was 1 Lewes Crescent, which sold for £2.5m last November, the latest month for which Land Registry data is available.

Three detached properties in Hill Brow, Hove, figure in the 2013 list of addresses where “property millionaires” live. The most recent to be bought is No 24, which sold for £1.7m.

Official data for November revealed that a total of 465 homes - with an aggregate value of £145.6

million - were bought and sold in Brighton and Hove.

The average price of properties sold during the month was a record £313,163 - beating the previously monthly record of £312,261 that was set in September last year.

The breakdown for each type of property sold last November is: ■ 46 detached homes: total value of £23,603,400, with an average price of £513,117. The most expensive - at £1,700,000 was 24 Hill Brow, Hove; ■ 83 semi-detached homes: total value of £30,707,824, with an average price of £369,974. The most expensive - at £1,335,000 - was 138 Montpelier Villas, Brighton; ■ 110 terrace homes: total value of £41,703,627, with an average price of £379,124. Council’s head of housing suspended EXCLUSIVE

The city council’s head of housing has been suspended, Brighton & Hove Independent can reveal.

Jugal Sharma, who has worked for the council for more than a decade, is one of the its highestpaid officers, earning £82,500 a year.

He is the second senior officer to have been suspended in recent weeks.

Mr Sharma, 53, joined from the London Borough of Hillingdon, where he served for four years as housing needs manager.

News of his suspension came as Sussex Police confirmed it was investigating allegations of fraud, but added no arrests have been made.

As one of the 20 highestpaid officers, Mr Sharma’s responsibilities with Brighton and Hove City Council are many and varied.

According to the council website, they include: ■ to visibly lead, manage

and be accountable for service policy advice to the council and the commissioning, delivery and assurance of investment and services provided by Brighton and Hove City Council and contracted with partner organisations; ■ to support and contribute to the corporate management of the council and ensure that services are delivered in accordance with council’s corporate planning framework, service planning arrangements, budget parameters and to meet or exceed agreed performance targets/outcomes; ■ to promote and deliver innovation in investment and service delivery that demonstrably offers strong return on investment and value for money.

For a year until March 2010, Mr Sharma also served as company secretary of Brighton & Hove Seaside Community Homes Limited.

The not-for-profit charitable company - financed with a £28 million loan from Santander was controversially set up by the council to raise investment to

help improve all council tenants’ homes to the government’s Decent Homes Standard.

It is leasing 499 empty council properties in batches over a fiveyear period, which started on November 1 2011; the council reported that 293 properties had been leased by October 1 2012.

They were all properties that were vacant, were a drain on the council’s housing budget, and were not adapted.

Mr Sharma’s suspension comes weeks after Ian Withers was suspended from his post as the council’s head of audit and business risk, a post he has held since December 2002. After Mr Withers was suspended, it was reported last month that concerns focused on misleading elected officials in public reports on sensitive matters.

Yesterday the council declined to say whether the suspensions were related, what matters were under investigation, or whether Sussex Police or external auditors had been called in.

A council spokesperson said: “We can’t comment on individual employee issues.”

Big turnout for ‘gagging bill’ debate More than 200 people are expected to attend a meeting to debate what opponents call the “gagging bill”: the Transparency of Lobbying, Non-party Campaigning and Trade Union Administration Bill 2013-14.

The meeting - organised by 38 Degrees, the 1m-member campaigning organisation - is at 8pm on Thursday, January 9, at St Mary’s Church, 61 St James’s Street, Kemptown.

The debate, to which all three of the city’s MPs have been invited, will be chaired by Greg Hadfield, editor of Brighton & Hove Independent.

This newspaper has promoted debate about the proposed legislation, including an article last week by Simon Kirby, the Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown.

In his article, Mr Kirby who has promised to attend Thursday’s meeting if his diary allows - argued that amendments to the proposed legislation “provided clarification and reassurance to charities, voluntary organisations and community groups that their normal engagement with the political system will not be regulated”.

He said it was important to strike the right balance so that nobody in the charitable sector felt their right to campaign was being impeded.

Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion - who has confirmed she will attend the meeting - said Mr Kirby was either misinformed about his government’s bill “or is deliberately trying to mislead”.

She said: “It is simply not true to assert the few amendments which the government has finally agreed to accept have provided ‘reassurance’ to charities and voluntary organisations that their legitimate campaigning will not be restricted by this bill. To the contrary, they remain deeply concerned that, in the words of a wide-ranging

Civil Society Commission, the bill ‘risks profoundly undermining the right of organisations to speak out on some of the most important issues facing the country and the planet’.

“While it is true that the government was persuaded to ‘pause’ the legislation to allow for further consultation, the length of the pause – less than six weeks rather than the three months which we had called for – has, in the words of the commission, ‘proved to be insufficient time to develop evidence-based solutions to solve the problems that we have highlighted’.”

Hove MP supports speed trials Mike Weatherley, the MP for Hove, has backed fellow Conservatives in pledging to reverse a possible council ban on the historic Brighton Speed Trials.

A decision on the future of the trials will be made at a meeting on January 23.

In an initiative led by Councillor Ken Norman, Brighton and Hove Conservatives have pledged support for them to continue and would - if in control of city council - allow the trials to go ahead in future.

Mr Weatherley said: “The speed trials are a local institution which, understandably, has a huge following across the southeast.

“Of course, motorsports by their very nature are dangerous, but along with tens of thousands of fellow enthusiasts, I’ve always loved going down to watch the races on a sunny afternoon by the sea.”

He urged the council to take note of calls from residents.

Going back to work after the Christmas and New Year break can be a gloomy experience.

Statistics show sick days taken on Mondays in January are proportionally higher than on other days and in other months through the year.

If you want to enjoy a jollier January and reduce the risk of coming down with coughs and colds - ditch the doughnuts, grab a piece of fruit instead, and add watercress to your sandwiches.

Natasha Cooper, manager at Food From The Bridge - which provides Sussex employers with catering delivery services - is launching a special energyboosting lunch menu.

She has also compiled a free tip sheet for employers and employees, designed to boost energy levels and keep the New Year doldrums at bay.

“Everybody gets a little down in the dumps after the festive period,” she explained. “We’ve all overindulged over the holidays and then it’s back to work in the cold and the dark. But paying a little more attention to your diet can work wonders.

“All the research shows that healthy eating boosts workplace productivity and reduces sickness absence - plus it makes us feel good. A healthy lunch doesn’t have to cost any more than an unhealthy one and a few simple changes to what we eat at work can make all the difference.”

A classic mistake is reaching for a sugary snack halfway through the morning: “That sugary doughnut will send your energy levels soaring, but they plummet just as quickly.

A banana is a much better choice, so keep one in your briefcase.”

Foods that are rich in iron also help prevent fatigue - while coffee and tea should be drunk in moderation. Too much caffeine

can actually make you feel more tired. Instead, drink plenty of water. And, instead of a cup of coffee, try having one or two squares of dark chocolate midafternoon.

Natasha added: “We’re devising a special January menu for our office-lunch delivery service that includes some high energy options. We also supply lunches for workplace training days and seminars and we know that choosing the right food combinations can make all the difference between people getting the most out of the entire day or snoozing through the afternoon.”

10 top tips to boost energy at work 1 Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. One of the reasons energy levels dip at work is because we have skipped breakfast. Porridge and muesli are quick and nutritious. Try adding fresh or dried fruit rather than a sprinkle of sugar.

2 If you do suffer a midmorning energy gap, reach for a piece of fruit rather than a sugary snack, such as a doughnut. Sugar gives as an instant boost, but it leaves our system just as quickly and we can feel even more tired.

3 Do not leave it too long between meals - no matter how busy you are. Ideally, eat every three to four hours; space meals with healthy snacks.

4 Pack a few healthy snacks every morning before you leave for work. Fruit (dried and fresh), nuts, even a small container of a dry high-fibre iron-fortified breakfast cereal,

all make excellent snacks and can give a healthy boost to energy levels between meals.

But make sure it is dark chocolate. This is because cocoa beans contains theobromine, which gives our bodies a boost.

This council publicises a commitment to a few favoured minorities, while failing to defend services for the elderly Jean Calder @jeancalder101

I approached this New Year with a feeling of distinct nausea.

Nothing to do with eating too much, rather a profound disquiet with local politics and the state of the city.

Chief among my concerns is the proposal that services for vulnerable adults will bear the brunt of council cuts. Denise D’Souza, executive director of adult social care, says £6 million will have to be found out of this budget. Older people’s resource centres are in the frame. So are day centres, which provide a lifeline for individuals and their families.

In the earlier phases of my mother’s dementia, she attended a non-specialist day centre once a week. And then, as the illness progressed, two days - or, later, three days - a week at a specialist dementia day centre.

She received 24-hour care at home, but this could not have been achieved for so long without day centres. While she was there, carers could rest knowing she was safe, stimulated and wellfed. My mother ate well at other times; but, for some of those who attended, day-centre lunches were the only well-prepared hot meals they received.

Council leader Jason Kitcat defends proposed cuts to these services. He wrote in this newspaper that “with the ‘personalisation’ scheme, elderly and disabled people are able to choose from a range of activities they would like to do with their allocated budget. This means that fewer are choosing to come to formal council-run day care centres - instead going to the cinema or bingo, for instance”.

He added “as a result...our services at day-care centres are being used less”.

This outrageous and selfserving statement, which in effect places responsibility for cuts in services for vulnerable elders upon slightly-less-vulnerable people who wish to live a normal life. I doubt those consulted about “activities” had any idea that mainstream services for their frail peers were at risk. I also suspect there are few older people receiving council funding who would really prefer to spend it on bingo rather than food, cleaning and care.

Cllr Kitcat cynically ignores the fact that “take-up” may have reduced because very frail people are not able to access services they need - either because they do not know how to manage money previously spent by the council on their behalf or because the amount provided is not enough to fund what they need. It is no accident that the personalisation agenda came in on the back of a previous £400,000 cut in services.

The truth is that many frail pensioners cannot manage personal funding - or simply do not receive it. I would like Cllr Kitcat to meet my old friend and colleague, Pauline (not her real name). She worked for years in the NHS and then in

That is the reality of life for many older people, especially older women. They work for years on low wages or unpaid in the home. In later life, they live on reduced pensions, frequently after caring for an older husband or parent. After their deaths, they struggle on alone. Then, when they need help and turn to the state to provide it, it spits in their faces. Or politely withholds support, which amounts to the same thing.

I am sick of this council’s hypocrisy and the brazen selfishness of those who dominate it. They parrot fine words about equalities and

diversity, but promote a culture obsessed with youth and privilege.

Leading councillors and senior officers eagerly publicise their commitment to a few favoured minorities, those with social cachet, but fail to defend services for the elderly, especially those who are poor, sick or female - or the unfashionable jobs of those who provide them (usually women).

This council has white-collar community safety officers, equalities and community development workers, commissioners and coordinators aplenty - none of whom provide essential client services.

Will they turn out to defend elderly services and the jobs of low-paid colleagues?

I do not for a moment think so.

Hospital chief pays tribute to the unsung heroes Frank le Duc @BHcitynews The chief executive of Brighton and Hove’s main hospital trust has paid tribute to the unsung heroes among his staff.

Matthew Kershaw, who runs the Royal Sussex County Hospital, said he wanted to mention “a few individuals and teams whose roles are perhaps less obvious than our doctors, nurses and other frontline clinical staff but are still fundamental to providing the best care we can for our patients”.

Mr Kershaw, the chief executive of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “My point in mentioning a few people is not to single them out as more important but to acknowledge and pay tribute to the essential contribution of everyone who works here.”

Those mentioned in Mr Kershaw’s Christmas message included: ■ “Our service managers are more often than not the “go to” people when things go wrong but, I think it is fair to say, rarely get the credit when things go well. They need to be master of all trades and their role is

fundamental to the effective and efficient running of the hospital; ■ “Our switchboard operators, the voices at the end of the phone when people call, who are there every minute of the day and night and who, in a 24-hour period, deal with around 7,000 calls at the County and 2,500 at the Princess Royal Hospital (in Haywards Heath); ■ “Nicky Rogerson and her staff in our payroll department who ensure over 7,000 people get paid on time each week or month and that we all got paid early this month which is a massive logistical challenge (and I am sure extremely welcome); ■ “The small army of people who don’t get paid for their time, effort and expertise – our volunteers, Leagues of Friends, other fundraising organisations like Rockinghorse and the Sussex Cancer Fund, and the relatively new Sing to Enjoy Choir whose carol concert I had the pleasure of attending; ■ “The team in Medical Records at Freshfields, who store, distribute and keep track of over two million sets of clinical notes.

When I see that a Victorian hospital has been converted into luxury apartments, I know with certainty that I could not live there. The walls would whisper their tragic stories to me late at night and I could not be happy there.

So, when an architect is asked to re-design a long-abandoned shoe factory and discovers a secret room in the basement, with a 16th-century Venetian mirror in it, I knew that I was going to settle down to a story of hidden histories and surprises.

to explore the mystery of the mirror. They discover that it once belonged to Catherine de Medici: betrayed wife, occult practitioner, and mistress of all things dark and devilish.

It seems to start to destroy their own relationship and soon they are engulfed in jealousy and obsession. They discover that the past holds great power over the future and that love alone is sometimes not enough.

This is a wonderful book that will haunt you long after you finish it.

The story wraps you in secrets and twists and turns, and is very clever in blending history with the present day.

A word of warning: if you are perhaps living in a re-modelled Victorian factory, and have ever wondered about the room in the basement that never seems warm, even on a summer day, this book is not perhaps for you!

Do we really need so many celebrations of the car?

A petition is seeking support to save the Brighton Speed Trials, said to be the longest-running motorsports event in the world.

Thousands of supporters have signed it, in an attempt to prevent the trials - held annually on Madeira Drive since 1905 - from being axed.

According to Green councillor Geoffrey Bowden, chair of the economic development and culture committee, which will make the decision on January 23: “This has absolutely nothing to do with the ideology of this administration.”

Apparently, it is solely about issues of public safety - a competitor was killed during last September’s trials - and the fact that seafront businesses and wide tracts of beach have to be closed for the event, causing widespread inconvenience at the height of the holiday season.

Well, I rather wish it did stem from ideology, rather than from health and safety.

Bored as I am by most forms of sport, I have always regarded motorsports as the most boring and pointless sports of all. People driving cars round and round in circles, while making a lot of noise and fumes, has always struck me as the epitome of mindless entertainment.

And these speed trials, in which serial competitors try to drive as fast as they can over a short stretch of road, also seem pretty superfluous. The event goes on all day (I can see it from my windows) with endless revving and roaring and smoking tyres, and thousands regard it, to judge by this petition, as “one of the highlights on Brighton’s seafront entertainment calendar”.

of their ideological convictions and declare that there are not just issues of boring old public safety and convenience involved here, but that an event such as this has become thoroughly anachronistic in our eco-focused, carbon-footprinted, saving-theplanet 21st century. That a Greenled Brighton and Hove does not wish to be associated with public spectacles of motor racing.

They could go even further.

Every year on the Sunday following the Saturday of the trials, something like 30,000 motorcycles descend on the same Madeira Drive like a swarm of black locusts, making an even worse racket, monopolising pavements and parking spaces for miles around, and forming another of these highlights in the local entertainment calendar.

That is 30,000 supposedly rugged individualists, all dressed alike, riding similar machines, making similar macho roaring noises, and probably all talking among themselves about the same techno things.

Brighton is the national Mecca for cloned individualists, for people who think they are wonderfully alternative, and go about in identical shoals to prove it.

And there are plenty of other council-licensed celebrations of the internal combustion engine over the course of the year. There are rallies of thousands of Minis, or thousands of VW camper vans, or thousands of Land Rovers.

They all cause disruption, congestion and pollution, and their contribution to the city’s economy is probably negligible. The only one I look forward to is the rally of commercial vehicles - ancient buses, vans, fire engines and so on - and that is because these vintage vehicles are all singular and different and have so much more character and attractive design than their bland, modern equivalents.

None of these events is exactly something that the country’s flagship Green-controlled city ought to want to be associated with. Maybe the time has come to rethink their rationale. Cllr Bowden and his colleagues on that committee should ignore vested-interest petitions, and the health-and-safety smokescreen, and declare some ideological determination for once.

Have a Happy New Year!

A very Happy New Year to you.

Easy to say, isn’t it? And how often we hear it said quite often by complete strangers who probably could not give a tinker’s cuss whether you have a happy new year or not?

It is one of those strange things we feel obliged to say, even though - as we all know - the goodwill is likely to be extremely short-lived.

Perhaps we could change things and have a sort of monthly wish of goodwill instead of an annual one.

It seems that we are still wishing each other happy new year until about mid-January.

So perhaps we could opt for a monthly top-up, thereby extending the season of goodwill throughout the year.

For example, as January is pretty much taken care of with the happy new year wishes for each other, we could re-invent ourselves for the second month by wishing each other a peaceful, healthy and wealthy February.

And so on, throughout the year.

It may be that if we adopted this idea and put it into play, we could actually avoid some of the unpleasant things we inflict on each other throughout the year.

In readiness, I have prepared a couple of stock questions I intend to ask when, as an entrepreneur, I am approached throughout the year by people with good ideas.

The first question I am going to ask is: “Please can you explain what you are going to be doing

while I am carrying out your idea?”; The second question is going to be: “Please can you explain exactly what your idea is going to do to enhance my lifeexperience?”

On reflection, had I asked these questions prior to allowing myself to get sucked into the few other people’s madcap good ideas, I would never have become involved in any of them.

Good luck to the hopeful who presents the next one - because, with my now-monthly reminders, I am more than ready for you.

New Year ... new attitudes So Christmas is over for another year and I am getting ready for one of my busiest periods. Sadly for many couples the Christmas break will have brought with it the realisation that their relationship no longer works. As parents they may have agreed to keep things going for the sake of the children and planned to split up after the holiday.

For others the combination of spending more time together than usual, high expectations and tricky family dynamics was “the straw that broke the camel’s back”. Either way it is a sad time for all involved and 2014 will not be a year they are looking forward to.

It may seem ironic, but one of the main reasons that people fail is because they do not really believe that it is possible for them to succeed.

Imagine if someone told you

Sometimes, it means replacing an entrenched habit with a new one - like walking to work instead of driving. We don’t actually change. We just stop doing something that we have decided not to do any more and perhaps replace it with something better.

So why do we fail?

One of the reasons is that the resolutions we make are too general and wide-ranging.

If you decide to “Lose weight, drink less and get more exercise”, you are setting yourself up for failure.

To make a resolution that you will be able to keep, make it specific and make it positive.

People fail because they do not really believe that it is possible for them to succeed”

that you will never be able to improve your life: this is it and nothing you can do will make any difference.

What does healthy life expectancy mean?

Did anyone ever say this to you when you were young? Have you ever said it to anyone else? Of course, it is true about all of us – ahead of us lies our future and it is up to us to spend however many years we have in the best way possible. The decisions we make about every aspect of our lives are not just taken at age 18 or 21 but throughout our lives.

Which do you want first – the good news or the bad news?

Well the good news is that of the people alive in Britain today, 10 million will live to be 100 (currently the number is 12,640).

These people are called the Generation C (for centenarian) and it is estimated that three million of them are presently under the age of 16 and a further five and a half million are under the age of 50.

There’s plenty of time then. So what’s the problem?

First of all, there isn’t much time between the cradle and the grave. A new-born boy today can expect to live for 78.9 years and a girl to 82.9. You might think,

Of course, you don’t just want to live healthily – you want those years to be happy and rewarding.

You want to be able to look back on your life and know that you have fulfilled your potential;

to be aware that you are living a life worth living while you are living it – to know that you are learning new things and using your talents and abilities to the full.

If you think of people you admire, they are usually people with a passion: people who have discovered what they enjoy doing and then perfected their sport or their craft and pursue it to its limits. For most people, this is not easy to do. We all have the same things holding us back: that little voice telling us that we’re not good enough; the family background that makes us conform; the tendency to laziness that stops us from achieving our potential.

Is it too late?

Another reason for giving up is because we don’t think in advance what we are going to do if we lapse.

So we have a cigarette and think: “That’s it. I’ve failed”. Or we over-indulge on a night out

and think: ‘Well, that’s the diet totally out of the window.”

In future, see these actions for what they are: one-offs, examples that you are human. Not a failure, just human. Then get back to your new regime the next day.

To stick to a New Year’s resolution you have to be

realistic. Realistic about your aim in the first place, particularly if you are trying to lose weight; realistic about how you are going to achieve your aim.

It is true that there are some things that have to be started when you are very young if you are going to excel: it takes a young body to be the best in some sports. It is possible, though, to do almost anything you want – whatever your age. You may not be able to become an Olympic champion, but it is certainly possible to decide on something that you want to achieve and to become good at it. For some sports and many creative areas of life, there are no age limits – you can become an artist, or an author, or a musician, or a traveller, or a canoeist, a marathon runner or an entrepreneur – whatever you want and whatever your age.

It is not just these kinds of creative activities that can be taken up later in life, many people have changed career and done something totally different in their 40s, 50s and even 60s and 70s. It is sometimes because of a life-changing event, like being made redundant, or having a baby, that makes people realize that they no longer want to do what may have suited them quite well when they were younger.

In fact, lots of people fulfil themselves only as they get older.

They may not become famous because they just get on with it: studying for a degree in their 70s, setting up a business in retirement, writing a first novel, travelling around the world, becoming a good photographer, a keen birdwatcher, learning a new language, taking up horse-riding, singing or learning to play a musical instrument.

You may feel that you have been held back because of a difficult start in life, or poor schooling, or the lack of direction and support from friends and family.

Almost all these things can also be a motivation – if you are able to put the past behind you and decide that it is never too late you can still, with a great deal of determination, and some planning, fulfil your dreams.

Wanting it all The prospect of trying to achieve everything can mean you achieve none of the things you most want.

See every attempt that you have made in the past as a learning experience. If you have tried to stop smoking 20 times, write down why you want to stop and the situations that led to you starting again. This time you will succeed. Believe it and you can do it.

down a career path they think will lead to money, status and success without considering the consequences to their personal lives. Sometimes, you just have to stand back and reflect. What do I really want in life? Who are the most important people in my life? Am I proud of my life so far? What could I do to improve it?

If you have a family, you will want them to thrive and to do well so your personal dreams and ambitions may have been pushed to one side. Having to juggle the often conflicting demands of modern life is stressful and sometimes, ironically, leads to the breakdown of family life that the paid work was intended to support.

The trouble is that, in the drive to “have it all”, the most important things in life can slip to the bottom of the pile, as “wanting it all” comes to mean a relentless drive to earn more and buy more. We all know of relationships that have ended, children who long to spend more time with their parents, and friendships that are neglected, because work has taken precedence over the things that once mattered the most. The status and financial rewards of any job are meaningless, if you are feeling constantly miserable and anxious.

It’s your choice It is, of course, much easier to ignore these niggling doubts and to put up with a life that isn’t quite the dream, or even particularly happy. It can be frightening to move out of your “comfort zone” because, by definition, this is a reassuring place to be. The alternative is not necessarily doing something frightening or risky, just doing something you long to do, but which you feel you “shouldn’t” because it doesn’t conform to what people expect you to do.

You may feel trapped in a job that you hate, with colleagues you don’t particularly like, because it is well paid, or at least pays the bills. Some people spend their lives making money, in order to lead a better life, and often sacrifice their health

The Seagulls went ahead when Dean Hammond headed in Andrea Orlandi's corner, before Craig Mackail-Smith scored from Ashley Barnes's flick-on.

Brighton extended their lead as Gary Dicker's pass picked out Wayne Bridge, who unleashed a superb strike from 35 yards past Town's Stephen Henderson.

Sussex tribute to Tony Greig and Christopher Martin-Jenkins SUSSEX County Cricket Club is opening a Book of Condolence for Tony Greig and one for Christopher Martin-Jenkins at the PROBIZ County Ground from Monday 7 January until the end of the month. All members and supporters are welcome to pay their tributes anytime between 9am5pm Monday to Friday. Both men were revered throughout the cricket world and had strong Sussex connections.

Tony Greig played for Sussex from 1967 to 1978 as an all-rounder and was captain from 1973 to 1977. He had an outstanding cricketing career captaining England with great distinction. Tony was instrumental in launching World Series Cricket before becoming a famous broadcaster.

Christopher Martin-Jenkins was one of the world's leading cricket journalists and one of the best known voices on Test Match Special. A past President of MCC, Christopher was a great supporter of Sussex and was proud of the role his son, Robin, played in the county's championship winning teams.

Sussex Chairman, Jim May, said: " Everyone connected with Sussex cricket is deeply saddened by the untimely loss of these two cricketing giants. GUS POYET has admitted that he has no intention of being 'reasonable' in the January transfer window when it comes to listening to offers for his Brighton & Hove Albion players.

The likes of Liam Bridcutt, Craig Mackail-Smith and Will Buckley have been linked with moves away from the club after impressive performances in the Championship this season.

However, Poyet is fed up of being asked for too much money for his own transfer targets, particularly British players, and plans to make life equally difficult for his rival bosses.

"I don't think I'm going to be reasonable because when I try to buy, nobody is very reasonable," Poyet said in the Daily Star.

"British players are overrated - they are too expensive for no reason.

"Everybody wants the best British players and that makes you pay too much.

"But when you can go overseas and get a better player for half the money the complaint is there are too many foreigners."

January 4 Albion were back on track after a 3-0 win at Ipswich Town. The Seagulls went ahead with a Dean Hammond header; Craig MackailSmith scored the second, before Wayne Bridge got the third with a longrange strike.

Albion gunned down late on THEO Walcott's deflected late winner settled a pulsating encounter and sent Arsenal into the FA Cup fifth round at the expense of battling Brighton.

Brighton demonstrated exactly why they are play-off contenders as they pushed Arsenal every inch of the way before finally being beaten by substitute Walcott's strike five minutes from time.

Arsenal led twice through Olivier Giroud but in a thunderous atmosphere Brighton bounced back and looked to have secured at least a replay with goals from Ashley Barnes and £2m Argentine striker Leonardo Ulloa on his debut.

Arsene Wenger sent on Walcott and Jack Wilshere in the second half to give Arsenal extra thrust and control.

And it was Walcott who answered his manager's call with a volley from the edge of the area after Brighton goalkeeper Casper Ankergren punched a corner out to the edge of the area.

LIAM Bridcutt has spoken of his desire to play in the Premier League as Brighton chase promotion this season after their FA Cup defeat to Arsenal on Saturday.

Midfielder Bridcutt has produced a series of impressive performances in the Championship this season to reportedly attract the attention of clubs in the top flight.

Seagulls manager Gus Poyet has previously tipped Bridcutt to make it to the very top of the game, and he had the chance to test himself against high-class opposition last weekend.

"I've always said that I want to play in the Premier League," he said.

"I think I am good enough to play there. Gus has given me a great opportunity and I want to progress as much as I can."

Bridcutt enjoyed lining up against Arsenal stars such as Jack Wilshere, having faced the Arsenal midfielder in a number of youth-team games during his time as a youngster at Chelsea.

The 23-year-old said: "Jack is a top quality player and will have a long career in the game for Arsenal and England.”

Albion to face Villarreal

Stephen Dobbie signed by Crystal Palace CRYSTAL PALACE have signed Abion striker Stephen Dobbie on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Dobbie scored three goals in 15 loan appearances for Palace towards the end of last season and played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs.

The Scotsman has experience of topflight football in England from his time with Swansea City and he played under Palace boss Ian Holloway during a couple of loan spells with Blackpool.

OSCAR GARCIA has promised to bring a touch of Barcelona to Brighton and Hove Albion after being appointed boss of the Seasiders.

The 40-year-old former Barca midfielder oversaw his first training session last week after taking over as the Seagulls' new head coach.

"I'm impressed with the people I'm working with at Brighton and I'm very happy, it's a pleasure for me to be here," he said.

"In the morning I met all the players and I saw a lot of good things. I knew English football and I knew some players who are playing here.

"My obsession is to attack, to attack the opposition, to keep the ball and to have the ball as many times as possible. If we have the ball we will have many chances to score and win the game. That's my philosophy.

"If you play good football you will have more chances to win than if you play bad."

Despite a successful playing career which also took in Valencia and Espanyol, Garcia, who quit as boss of Maccabi Tel Aviv last month, says he was always destined to become a manager.

Seagulls head north to Elland Road for fiery start to new season OSCAR GARCIA faces a baptism of fire at Elland Road as the Seagulls begin life after Gus Poyet in front of a bumper crowd at Leeds.

The Yorkshire club have reportedly already sold more than 28,000 tickets for tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) and the attendance will no doubt be further boosted by a sizeable contingent travelling from Sussex for a first competitive glimpse of new Albion head coach.

However, even the most rabid of opposition support would be unlikely to faze the Albion’s new numero uno. Leo Ulloa therefore remains the only obvious choice to start in the central striking slot. Will Buckley and Ashley Barnes look to be leading the race to start on either side of the line-leading Argentinian.

David Lopez returned to the Albion this and his new manager has been impressed by his high fitness levels despite the Spaniard missing a large chunk of pre-season. Recent arrival Kemy Agustien is in the same

Left back remains a problem area for Brighton after the Albion lost out to Reading over the signing of last season’s loan revelation Wayne Bridge. Despite giving considerable pre-season game time to both Vitalijs Maksimenko and Adam Chicksen, who arrived this summer from MK Dons, Oscar is almost certain to start with Inigo Calderon on the left alongside Matthew Upson, Gordon Greer and fellow swashbuckling Spaniard Bruno.

Brighton’s hosts will be without Rodolph Austin and El-Hadji Diouf as both are still under suspension for red cards shown during the Albion’s end of season trip to Elland Road.

Oscar Garcia faced a baptism of fire at Elland Road as the Seagulls began life after Gus Poyet by preparing to perform in front of a bumper crowd. On the eve of the game, the Yorkshire club had reportedly sold more than 28,000 tickets.

Albion not rushing to decide on Gus Poyet's future BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION say they will take "as long as necessary" to complete their inquiry into suspended manager Gus Poyet and his coaching staff.

Poyet, assistant boss Mauricio Taricco and first-team coach Charlie Oatway were told to stay away from the club in the aftermath of their play-off semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace earlier this month.

Brighton are still making no comment on the events surrounding the trio's suspension but, in a statement on the club's website, chief executive Paul Barber revealed the inquiry into the incident before their play-off tie with Crystal Palace last month is ongoing.

"We are conducting these matters reasonably, in light of all the circumstances," Barber said.

"These processes will take as long as is necessary."

Barber, in a statement on the club website, added: "The club will not be making any public comment on the matter until we are in a position to do so.

"We are aware of some ill-informed and unfounded speculation appearing in various

places. It is both unfair and unhelpful to everyone concerned.

“I appreciate that the issues we have had to face in recent weeks have created some uncertainty and concern for some of our supporters "Unfortunately, this is something we must all live with for the time being.

"Our priority will always be to ensure that we continue to manage the variety of situations that can develop within the club with as much confidentiality, professionalism, and dignity as possible for everyone concerned."

Meanwhile Barber says the Championship club are unlikely to identify who carried out an act of vandalism in the Crystal Palace dressing room ahead of the second leg of their play-off semi-final.

Brighton apologised to Palace for the incident, in which excrement was found in the visitors' dressing room. Eagles manager Ian Holloway later said it had helped motivate his side to win at the Amex.

"Unfortunately, we are very unlikely to know exactly what happened, but access and security to the tunnel area have been reviewed and some changes will be implemented next season.

"It is now time to move on."

Albion reveals new away kit ALBION’S new away kit will be a yellow shirt, with navy pin stripes, navy shorts, and yellow and navy socks.

The new design features new club sponsor American Express, and complements the club’s new home strip, revealed in April.

The striking new away strip was unveiled for the first time at Errea’s 25th anniversary dinner in Parma last night, as the Italian kit specialists showcased their various kits for the 2013/14 season.

Business development manager Paul Rogers commented: “We wanted something

bright and bold, a change strip which would complement the new home strip. We are really pleased with the design, cut and finished product.

“A lot of thought has gone into the design of these kits and we hope fans will like it as much as those of us who have been involved in the design and creation.

Big match preview: Doncaster Rovers vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton’s grave injury list is finally easing ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday) trip to Doncaster Rovers – although the game is likely to come too soon for any of the long-term absentees to make too meaningful an appearance.

Liam Bridcutt has returned to training this week but is unlikely to feature tomorrow while Andrea Orlandi has been pencilled in for a comeback in one of the Albion’s next two fixtures – although the home game with Blackburn appears the more probable.

Leo Ulloa and Craig MackailSmith should be back in action next month and Kemy Agustien has also stepped up his recovery following a stop-start opening few weeks to life at The Amex.

Oscar Garcia will be confident his side can address their five game winless streak against a Doncaster side who go into the match on the back of a pair of heavy defeats. Rovers have lost their last two outings (away to Reading and Middlesbrough) and leaked eight goals in the process – scoring just once in return.

"Every team will be up for it and it will be 50-50 whoever we play in the semi-finals," Buckley said.

"We can dare to dream to get to that final.

The top six are all good teams in this league so it is going to be difficult, but we are looking forward to them."

Albion midfielder Dean Hammond was pleased the club have managed to secure a play-off place with one game of the season to spare.

"It is nice to achieve it and it is what we have been working for all season," Hammond told BBC Sussex.

"The play-offs are one-off games. We don't fear anyone.

"When we are playing well and on top form we are a good team.

"Once you are in the play-offs, the aim is to get promoted and we will be working hard to achieve that."

BRIGHTON & Hove Albion winger Will Buckley hopes the club can remain relaxed in the Championship play-offs.

October Albion’s injury crisis shows no signs of easing ahead of the visit of big-spending promotion hopefuls Nottingham Forest – with Leo Ulloa likely to be out for up to two months.

The goal-grabbing Argentinian was taken to hospital during the Seagulls tame 1:1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night and early indications are the striker could be left nursing a fractured foot.

His absence, which comes hot on the heels of a three-match ban, will heap further pressure on Brighton director of football David Burke to recruit a loan signing to compete with Ashley Barnes.

Barnes, who failed to find the net while deputising for Ulloa during his suspension, is Brighton’s only fit senior striker and supporters will be expecting the club to provide head coach Oscar Garcia with a temporary reinforcement.

The Brighton hierarchy have already been criticised by some sections of the crowd for not signing a loan striker at the tail end of last season when Barnes himself was suspended for a run of games, leaving Ulloa as the lone option. And similar gripes surfaced earlier this campaign when Craig Mackail-Smith was ruled out for an extended spell and Ulloa banned for three matches.

Albion need improvement to snare the on-form Foxes Oscar Garcia will be looking for a drastic improvement from his team following Tuesday’s humbling at home to rock-bottom Barnsley.

And his charges will have to perform far better when they welcome table-topping Leicester City to The Amex tomorrow afternoon (Saturday).

The Seagulls struggled to open up a Barnsley team which had previously leaked 35 goals in 17 games and are unlikely to find it any easier against a Foxes defence which has given up just a goal a game this campaign.

Leicester City’s back four will likely be marshalled by the imposing Wes Morgan who remains one of the division’s top central defenders and leads his team in average rating this season.

Wiig is equally good as kind hearted Cheryl, but she’s criminally under used, though she does get to appear in the film’s best scene, when Mitty is inspired to get on a helicopter piloted by a drunken Icelander (Olfur Darri Olafsson), because he fantasises about Cheryl

The Bad Aside from a lack of chemistry between Stiller and Wiig, the film’s main problem is that the script fails to engage on an emotional level - it settles for the bland straightforwardness of its rather trite Just Do It message and ends up coming across like an advert in the process.

It also, ironically, suffers from a crucial lack of imagination

(almost all the fantasy scenes are in the trailer) and pretty much abandons the whole daydreaming comedy premise at around the halfway mark.

Worth seeing?

Stiller’s likeability ensures that The Secret life of Walter Mitty remains watchable, but it’s ultimately let down by a trite, unimaginative script that fails to connect either emotionally or dramatically.

General Motors recalls 1.5m cars in China General Motors (GM) and its partner firm in China are recalling about 1.46 million cars amid concerns about their potential safety.

The ability to predict whether it is going to rain or not is something that would come in handy when living in drizzly England.

That old wives’ tale of “if the cows are lying down, a rainstorm is imminent” comes to mind.

But maybe we can look closer to home, away from the farmyard, to prophesy the occurrence of rain.

As unlikely as it may seem, there is now strong research into how arthritic joints react to rain, cold, sleet, adverse weather, in general, which suggests that people suffering from arthritis are as close to a barometer as anything.

Acting as real-life downpour predictor.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition affecting joints in the body, most commonly the joints of the lower back, neck, hips, knees, shoulders and hands.

In healthy joints, a space is present between the bones that comprise the joint and, over time, these spaces narrow resulting in the bone surfaces grinding together. Which causes pain.

So what happens to these joints before and during rain?

There has been an extensive amount of research into the relationship between atmospheric conditions and arthritic joint pain. A drop in barometric pressure, which refers to the atmospheric conditions, occurs before the onset of a rainstorm and is the most likely explanation for the changes in joint functionality.

Using a balloon as an example, when the barometric pressure drops around a balloon, the air in the balloon will expand, causing it to swell.

The same thing happens to tissues in the body when the atmospheric pressure drops.

In regard to arthritic joints, any additional impingement of bones or tissue swelling will result in a significant increase in discomfort, caused by further irritation to the joint spaces and to nerves in the area.

For those suffering from arthritis in Brighton, Hove and beyond, in case you were thinking of emigrating, it is important to stress that the general weather conditions do not worsen degenerative joint conditions; it is purely the transient drop in barometric pressure that causes irritation of tissues that can return to their normal state with regular barometric pressure.

As much as people who experience arthritis do have an almost-supernatural intuition as a by-product of their ailment, it is a very widespread and common affliction.

There are remedies out there; my osteopathy practice in Preston Village may be able to provide some answers for you. Regardless of the weather during the festive period, a consultation or osteopathic treatment might be just the ticket.

The January sales may have started but Brighton fans will be hoping Tony Bloom can keep any bargain hunters at bay as the club try and negotiate a tricky transfer window.

Interest in Oscar Garcia’s players is likely to be high – with approaches for at least three players being reported even before the clock ticked round to 2014.

Sunderland – managed by former Brighton boss Gus Poyet – have had bids for both Liam Bridcutt and Will Buckley dismissed as derisory by the Seagulls hierarchy, with the figures widely believed to be around £2million for Bridcutt and £1.75million for Buckley.

Reports on Wearside suggest £2million is as high as Poyet is prepared to go to land his former midfield fulcrum, with who he shares an agent.

He will no doubt find his approaches hamstrung by comments he made during his spell as Seagulls manager. Poyet

previously said he would not only sign Bridcutt if he was manager of Real Madrid, but also that Buckley was worth more than the £10million Manchester United paid for Crystal Palace star Wilfied Zaha.

Burnley, who seem to be preparing for life without Premier Leaguelinked Danny Ings, asked about the forward’s availability earlier in the season and are rumoured to have returned with a £750,000 opening bid.

Straight from the commentary box After a rather soggy and frustrating start to 2014, the Albion embark on a new FA Cup campaign. The competition has been pretty good to the Seagulls over the last few years. The former manager Gus Poyet was fairly fortunate with some big home draws to enjoy against Newcastle and Arsenal and a high profile tie at Liverpool which ended up finally in disappointment.

Much has been written about the supposed demise of the FA Cup but Wigan’s victory in last year’s final proved there is still excitement to be gained from a Wembley final. With Premier League sides resting key players, teams from the Championship have a real opportunity and although it’s nice to see the stars of the top-flight, lower league clubs eye a useful revenue stream and day in the spotlight.

impressed during Leo Ulloa’s absence and, with rumoured interest from Burnley and Wolves, will no doubt be looking for assurances over his role in the team. However, Ulloa looked rusty against Bournemouth and would almost certainly benefit from more match time as he looks to recover his sharpness in front of goal.

One option would be to start with both, with Barnes playing a narrow support role in place of David Lopez or Kazenga Lua Lua before replacing Ulloa in the central striking position after an hour or so - assuming everything is going to plan on the pitch.

Brighton take a break from Championship football this weekend when Oscar Garcia’s side entertain Reading in the FA Cup third round – and Oscar Garcia could take the opportunity to tinker with his Seagulls side.

Despite the Albion’s stuttering 1-1 draw at home with Bournemouth on Wednesday, the Seagulls sit seventh in a division which is proving as competitive as ever.

And, with Oscar having rested key players like Andrew Crofts and Rohan Ince during the hectic Christmas period, it is likely the head coach will make changes to his starting line-up ahead of the clash with The Royals.

Matthew Upson, who has not missed a minute of league football since arriving initially on loan last year, is perhaps the most likely to be given a game off – although much will depend on the fitness or otherwise of Gordon Greer and Oscar’s confidence in Lewis Dunk.

Jake Forster-Caskey could find himself back in the match day squad while Kemy Agustien will be hopeful of a starting slot in the Albion’s midfield – with Liam Bridcutt or Andrew Crofts likely to make way.
