REVEALED: RECORD NUMBER OF PROPERTY MILLIONAIRES EXCLUSIVE by Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy

A record number of homes worth more than £1 million have changed hands in Brighton and Hove, according to the latest Land Registry data. In just 11 months to December 1 last year, a total of 35 £1m-plus properties changed hands, equalling the previous annual record set in the whole of 2012. Their aggregate value was £47.9m. The most expensive was 1 Lewes Crescent, which sold for £2.5m last November, the latest month for which Land Registry data is available. Three detached properties in Hill Brow, Hove, figure in the 2013 list of addresses where “property millionaires” live. The most recent to be bought is No 24, which sold for £1.7m. Council’s head of housing suspended EXCLUSIVE by Frank le Duc @BHcitynews

The city council’s head of housing has been suspended, Brighton & Hove Independent can reveal. Jugal Sharma, who has worked for the council for more than a decade, is one of the its highestpaid officers, earning £82,500 a year. He is the second senior officer to have been suspended in recent weeks. Mr Sharma, 53, joined from the London Borough of Hillingdon, where he served for four years as housing needs manager. News of his suspension came as Sussex Police confirmed it was investigating allegations of fraud, but added no arrests have been made. As one of the 20 highestpaid officers, Mr Sharma’s responsibilities with Brighton and Hove City Council are many and varied. According to the council website, they include: ■ to visibly lead, manage

and be accountable for service policy advice to the council and the commissioning, delivery and assurance of investment and services provided by Brighton and Hove City Council and contracted with partner organisations; ■ to support and contribute to the corporate management of the council and ensure that services are delivered in accordance with council’s corporate planning framework, service planning arrangements, budget parameters and to meet or exceed agreed performance targets/outcomes; ■ to promote and deliver innovation in investment and service delivery that demonstrably offers strong return on investment and value for money. For a year until March 2010, Mr Sharma also served as company secretary of Brighton & Hove Seaside Community Homes Limited. The not-for-profit charitable company - financed with a £28 million loan from Santander was controversially set up by the council to raise investment to

help improve all council tenants’ homes to the government’s Decent Homes Standard. It is leasing 499 empty council properties in batches over a fiveyear period, which started on November 1 2011; the council reported that 293 properties had been leased by October 1 2012. They were all properties that were vacant, were a drain on the council’s housing budget, and were not adapted. Mr Sharma’s suspension comes weeks after Ian Withers was suspended from his post as the council’s head of audit and business risk, a post he has held since December 2002. After Mr Withers was suspended, it was reported last month that concerns focused on misleading elected officials in public reports on sensitive matters. Yesterday the council declined to say whether the suspensions were related, what matters were under investigation, or whether Sussex Police or external auditors had been called in. A council spokesperson said: “We can’t comment on individual employee issues.” Sussex Police said: “An

Big turnout for ‘gagging bill’ debate More than 200 people are expected to attend a meeting to debate what opponents call the “gagging bill”: the Transparency of Lobbying, Non-party Campaigning and Trade Union Administration Bill 2013-14. The meeting - organised by 38 Degrees, the 1m-member campaigning organisation - is at 8pm on Thursday, January 9, at St Mary’s Church, 61 St James’s Street, Kemptown. The debate, to which all three of the city’s MPs have been invited, will be chaired by Greg Hadfield, editor of Brighton & Hove Independent. This newspaper has promoted debate about the proposed legislation, including an article last week by Simon Kirby, the Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown. In his article, Mr Kirby who has promised to attend Thursday’s meeting if his diary allows - argued that amendments to the proposed legislation “provided clarification and reassurance to charities, voluntary organisations and community groups that their normal engagement with the political system will not be regulated”.

Charities and voluntary organisations claim the bill will stifle their activities

He said it was important to strike the right balance so that nobody in the charitable sector felt their right to campaign was being impeded. Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion - who has confirmed she will attend the meeting - said Mr Kirby was either misinformed about his government’s bill “or is deliberately trying to mislead”. She said: “It is simply not true to assert the few amendments which the government has finally agreed to accept have provided ‘reassurance’ to charities and voluntary organisations that their legitimate campaigning will not be restricted by this bill. To the contrary, they remain deeply concerned that, in the words of a wide-ranging

Civil Society Commission, the bill ‘risks profoundly undermining the right of organisations to speak out on some of the most important issues facing the country and the planet’. “While it is true that the government was persuaded to ‘pause’ the legislation to allow for further consultation, the length of the pause – less than six weeks rather than the three months which we had called for – has, in the words of the commission, ‘proved to be insufficient time to develop evidence-based solutions to solve the problems that we have highlighted’.” For more details of the meeting, visit: secure.38degrees. org.uk/brighton-meeting

investigation into allegations of fraud at Brighton and Hove City Council has been launched by Sussex Police. “The matters were drawn to the attention of police by the council in November following an initial investigation by its own internal audit team. “There have been no arrests at this stage.” Frank le Duc is the founder and editor of Brighton and Hove News. Hove MP supports speed trials Mike Weatherley, the MP for Hove, has backed fellow Conservatives in pledging to reverse a possible council ban on the historic Brighton Speed Trials. A decision on the future of the trials will be made at a meeting on January 23. In an initiative led by Councillor Ken Norman, Brighton and Hove Conservatives have pledged support for them to continue and would - if in control of city council - allow the trials to go ahead in future. Mr Weatherley said: “The speed trials are a local institution which, understandably, has a huge following across the southeast. “Of course, motorsports by their very nature are dangerous, but along with tens of thousands of fellow enthusiasts, I’ve always loved going down to watch the races on a sunny afternoon by the sea.” He urged the council to take note of calls from residents. If you dread the January blues, change your sandwich filling! Anne Caborn

Going back to work after the Christmas and New Year break can be a gloomy experience. Statistics show sick days taken on Mondays in January are proportionally higher than on other days and in other months through the year. If you want to enjoy a jollier January and reduce the risk of coming down with coughs and colds - ditch the doughnuts, grab a piece of fruit instead, and add watercress to your sandwiches. Natasha Cooper, manager at Food From The Bridge - which provides Sussex employers with catering delivery services - is launching a special energyboosting lunch menu. She has also compiled a free tip sheet for employers and employees, designed to boost energy levels and keep the New Year doldrums at bay.

“Everybody gets a little down in the dumps after the festive period,” she explained. “We’ve all overindulged over the holidays and then it’s back to work in the cold and the dark. But paying a little more attention to your diet can work wonders. “All the research shows that healthy eating boosts workplace productivity and reduces sickness absence - plus it makes us feel good. A healthy lunch doesn’t have to cost any more than an unhealthy one and a few simple changes to what we eat at work can make all the difference.” A classic mistake is reaching for a sugary snack halfway through the morning: “That sugary doughnut will send your energy levels soaring, but they plummet just as quickly. A banana is a much better choice, so keep one in your briefcase.” Foods that are rich in iron also help prevent fatigue - while coffee and tea should be drunk in moderation. Too much caffeine

can actually make you feel more tired. Instead, drink plenty of water. And, instead of a cup of coffee, try having one or two squares of dark chocolate midafternoon. Natasha added: “We’re devising a special January menu for our office-lunch delivery service that includes some high energy options. We also supply lunches for workplace training days and seminars and we know that choosing the right food combinations can make all the difference between people getting the most out of the entire day or snoozing through the afternoon.” So if you are spending money on training, think about providing an energy-boosting lunch to go with it. Natasha Cooper’s tips for boosting energy levels at work (see below) can also be downloaded for free from the Food From The Bridge website. Visit: www.foodfromthebridge.com.

10 top tips to boost energy at work 1 Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. One of the reasons energy levels dip at work is because we have skipped breakfast. Porridge and muesli are quick and nutritious. Try adding fresh or dried fruit rather than a sprinkle of sugar. 2 If you do suffer a midmorning energy gap, reach for a piece of fruit rather than a sugary snack, such as a doughnut. Sugar gives as an instant boost, but it leaves our system just as quickly and we can feel even more tired. 3 Do not leave it too long between meals - no matter how busy you are. Ideally, eat every three to four hours; space meals with healthy snacks. 4 Pack a few healthy snacks every morning before you leave for work. Fruit (dried and fresh), nuts, even a small container of a dry high-fibre iron-fortified breakfast cereal,

all make excellent snacks and can give a healthy boost to energy levels between meals.

caffeine can actually make you feel more tired. Instead, drink plenty of water.

5 Over-eating makes us tired. A big lunch, or just one large meal at the end of the working day is not a good idea and if you eat too late it can interfere with a restful night’s sleep. 6 Try to eat lunch away from your desk no matter how busy you are. A short break outside, or a change of scene, can reenergise you. 7 Foods that are rich in iron also help prevent fatigue, so when you are thinking about what sandwich to have for lunch, opt for wholemeal bread and choose beef instead of chicken. Green vegetables are also rich in iron. Simply adding cress to an egg mayonnaise sandwich boosts its iron content. 8 Coffee and tea should be drunk in moderation. Too much

Drink coffee and tea in moderation

9 Chocolate can be good for! But make sure it is dark chocolate. This is because cocoa beans contains theobromine, which gives our bodies a boost. But do not eat too much of it. A couple of squares midafternoon should keep you going. 10 Avoid too much alcohol. A drink at the end of the day may help you unwind, but too much alcohol can leave you feeling fatigued, disrupt sleep, and is a depressant.

This council publicises a commitment to a few favoured minorities, while failing to defend services for the elderly Jean Calder @jeancalder101

I approached this New Year with a feeling of distinct nausea. Nothing to do with eating too much, rather a profound disquiet with local politics and the state of the city. Chief among my concerns is the proposal that services for vulnerable adults will bear the brunt of council cuts. Denise D’Souza, executive director of adult social care, says £6 million will have to be found out of this budget. Older people’s resource centres are in the frame. So are day centres, which provide a lifeline for individuals and their families. In the earlier phases of my mother’s dementia, she attended a non-specialist day centre once a week. And then, as the illness progressed, two days - or, later, three days - a week at a specialist dementia day centre. She received 24-hour care at home, but this could not have been achieved for so long without day centres. While she was there, carers could rest knowing she was safe, stimulated and wellfed. My mother ate well at other times; but, for some of those who attended, day-centre lunches were the only well-prepared hot meals they received. Council leader Jason Kitcat defends proposed cuts to these services. He wrote in this newspaper that “with the ‘personalisation’ scheme, elderly and disabled people are able to choose from a range of activities they would like to do with their allocated budget. This means that fewer are choosing to come to formal council-run day care centres - instead going to the cinema or bingo, for instance”.

He added “as a result...our services at day-care centres are being used less”. This outrageous and selfserving statement, which in effect places responsibility for cuts in services for vulnerable elders upon slightly-less-vulnerable people who wish to live a normal life. I doubt those consulted about “activities” had any idea that mainstream services for their frail peers were at risk. I also suspect there are few older people receiving council funding who would really prefer to spend it on bingo rather than food, cleaning and care. Cllr Kitcat cynically ignores the fact that “take-up” may have reduced because very frail people are not able to access services they need - either because they do not know how to manage money previously spent by the council on their behalf or because the amount provided is not enough to fund what they need. It is no accident that the personalisation agenda came in on the back of a previous £400,000 cut in services. The truth is that many frail pensioners cannot manage personal funding - or simply do not receive it. I would like Cllr Kitcat to meet my old friend and colleague, Pauline (not her real name). She worked for years in the NHS and then in

for her sister, who has dementia, and lives in the same house. Pauline cannot get out. She cooks and cleans for her sister and deals with her fear, anxiety and occasionally-challenging behaviour. To stay active, Pauline knits for charity. She is worried about her own health, because she has had a recent They parrot fine words about fall. I asked if her not to retire but to care full-time sister had any money under the

personalisation scheme. She has not. Pauline has not even heard of it. So there was no real choice. It was the care home or nothing at all. That is the reality of life for many older people, especially older women. They work for years on low wages or unpaid in the home. In later life, they live on reduced pensions, frequently after caring for an older husband or parent. After their deaths, they struggle on alone. Then, when they need help and turn to the state to provide it, it spits in their faces. Or politely withholds support, which amounts to the same thing. I am sick of this council’s hypocrisy and the brazen selfishness of those who dominate it. They parrot fine words about equalities and

diversity, but promote a culture obsessed with youth and privilege. Leading councillors and senior officers eagerly publicise their commitment to a few favoured minorities, those with social cachet, but fail to defend services for the elderly, especially those who are poor, sick or female - or the unfashionable jobs of those who provide them (usually women). This council has white-collar community safety officers, equalities and community development workers, commissioners and coordinators aplenty - none of whom provide essential client services. Will they turn out to defend elderly services and the jobs of low-paid colleagues? I do not for a moment think so.

Hospital chief pays tribute to the unsung heroes Frank le Duc @BHcitynews The chief executive of Brighton and Hove’s main hospital trust has paid tribute to the unsung heroes among his staff. Matthew Kershaw, who runs the Royal Sussex County Hospital, said he wanted to mention “a few individuals and teams whose roles are perhaps less obvious than our doctors, nurses and other frontline clinical staff but are still fundamental to providing the best care we can for our patients”. Mr Kershaw, the chief executive of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “My point in mentioning a few people is not to single them out as more important but to acknowledge and pay tribute to the essential contribution of everyone who works here.” Those mentioned in Mr Kershaw’s Christmas message included: ■ “Our service managers are more often than not the “go to” people when things go wrong but, I think it is fair to say, rarely get the credit when things go well. fundamental to the effective and efficient running of the hospital; ■ “Our switchboard operators, the voices at the end of the phone when people call, who are there every minute of the day and night and who, in a 24-hour period, deal with around 7,000 calls at the County and 2,500 at the Princess Royal Hospital (in Haywards Heath); ■ “Nicky Rogerson and her staff in our payroll department who ensure over 7,000 people get paid on time each week or month and that we all got paid early this month which is a massive logistical challenge (and I am sure extremely welcome); ■ “The small army of people who don’t get paid for their time, effort and expertise – our volunteers, Leagues of Friends, other fundraising organisations like Rockinghorse and the Sussex Cancer Fund, and the relatively new Sing to Enjoy Choir whose carol concert I had the pleasure of attending; ■ “The team in Medical Records at Freshfields, who store, distribute and keep track of over two million sets of clinical notes. ■ “Tony Scott, runner-up Cleaner of the Year in the Hospital Star Awards, who always stops for a chat when I see him and

The Medici Mirror, by Melissa Bailey I’ve often felt that buildings have a secret hidden life of their own; some histories must surely linger in the bricks and mortar. When I see that a Victorian hospital has been converted into luxury apartments, I know with certainty that I could not live there. The walls would whisper their tragic stories to me late at night and I could not be happy there. So, when an architect is asked to re-design a long-abandoned shoe factory and discovers a secret room in the basement, with a 16th-century Venetian mirror in it, I knew that I was going to settle down to a story of hidden histories and surprises. Johnny Carter, the architect, has a new girlfriend in his life and the pair of them start

to explore the mystery of the mirror. They discover that it once belonged to Catherine de Medici: betrayed wife, occult practitioner, and mistress of all things dark and devilish. It seems to start to destroy their own relationship and soon they are engulfed in jealousy and obsession. They discover that the past holds great power over the future and that love alone is sometimes not enough. This is a wonderful book that will haunt you long after you finish it. The story wraps you in secrets and twists and turns, and is very clever in blending history with the present day. A word of warning: if you are perhaps living in a re-modelled Victorian factory, and have ever wondered about the room in the basement that never seems warm, even on a summer day, this book is not perhaps for you!

speaks with passion and pride about his part in enhancing the clinical care and the experience of patients in the areas he cleans.” Mr Kershaw added: “I want to thank all staff for your dedication, compassion and hard work throughout the year. My particular thanks to those of you who are working over the festive season and my sincere good wishes for Christmas and the new year.

Do we really need so many celebrations of the car? Graham Chainey

A petition is seeking support to save the Brighton Speed Trials, said to be the longest-running motorsports event in the world. Thousands of supporters have signed it, in an attempt to prevent the trials - held annually on Madeira Drive since 1905 - from being axed. According to Green councillor Geoffrey Bowden, chair of the economic development and culture committee, which will make the decision on January 23: “This has absolutely nothing to do with the ideology of this administration.” Apparently, it is solely about issues of public safety - a competitor was killed during last September’s trials - and the fact that seafront businesses and wide tracts of beach have to be closed for the event, causing widespread inconvenience at the height of the holiday season. Well, I rather wish it did stem from ideology, rather than from health and safety. Bored as I am by most forms of sport, I have always regarded motorsports as the most boring and pointless sports of all. People driving cars round and round in circles, while making a lot of noise and fumes, has always struck me as the epitome of mindless entertainment. And these speed trials, in which serial competitors try to drive as fast as they can over a short stretch of road, also seem pretty superfluous. The event goes on all day (I can see it from my windows) with endless revving and roaring and smoking tyres, and thousands regard it, to judge by this petition, as “one of the highlights on Brighton’s seafront entertainment calendar”. Maybe our Green-led “administration” (to use the councillor’s presidential-sounding locution) should have the courage

of their ideological convictions and declare that there are not just issues of boring old public safety and convenience involved here, but that an event such as this has become thoroughly anachronistic in our eco-focused, carbon-footprinted, saving-theplanet 21st century. That a Greenled Brighton and Hove does not wish to be associated with public spectacles of motor racing. They could go even further. Every year on the Sunday following the Saturday of the trials, something like 30,000 motorcycles descend on the same Madeira Drive like a swarm of black locusts, making an even worse racket, monopolising pavements and parking spaces for miles around, and forming another of these highlights in the local entertainment calendar. That is 30,000 supposedly rugged individualists, all dressed alike, riding similar machines, making similar macho roaring noises, and probably all talking among themselves about the same techno things. Brighton is the national Mecca for cloned individualists, for people who think they are wonderfully alternative, and go about in identical shoals to prove it.

And there are plenty of other council-licensed celebrations of the internal combustion engine over the course of the year. There are rallies of thousands of Minis, or thousands of VW camper vans, or thousands of Land Rovers. They all cause disruption, congestion and pollution, and their contribution to the city’s economy is probably negligible. The only one I look forward to is the rally of commercial vehicles - ancient buses, vans, fire engines and so on - and that is because these vintage vehicles are all singular and different and have so much more character and attractive design than their bland, modern equivalents. None of these events is exactly something that the country’s flagship Green-controlled city ought to want to be associated with. Maybe the time has come to rethink their rationale. Cllr Bowden and his colleagues on that committee should ignore vested-interest petitions, and the health-and-safety smokescreen, and declare some ideological determination for once.

Have a Happy New Year! But don’t try to waste my time or money in 2014 Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland

A very Happy New Year to you. Easy to say, isn’t it? And how often we hear it said quite often by complete strangers who probably could not give a tinker’s cuss whether you have a happy new year or not? It is one of those strange things we feel obliged to say, even though - as we all know - the goodwill is likely to be extremely short-lived. Perhaps we could change things and have a sort of monthly wish of goodwill instead of an annual one. It seems that we are still wishing each other happy new year until about mid-January. So perhaps we could opt for a monthly top-up, thereby extending the season of goodwill throughout the year.

For example, as January is pretty much taken care of with the happy new year wishes for each other, we could re-invent ourselves for the second month by wishing each other a peaceful, healthy and wealthy February. And so on, throughout the year. It may be that if we adopted this idea and put it into play, we could actually avoid some of the unpleasant things we inflict on each other throughout the year.

us stick to those throughout the year? I have made quite a few this year, in the hope that some of them stick. I have also put reminders into my diary so that I may remind myself regularly and keep on track. One of my regular resolutions is to maximise use of my time. By that, I mean not to allow others to waste my time. Which is easier said than done. Despite this particular annual resolution, I still get in to people who I have a couple of stock sucked turn up on my doorstep questions to ask when with what is commonly described as a “good idea”. approached by people These ideas are with good ideas” invariably so good that the mastermind behind With the current system, we the scheme has so far not been do seem to forget those annual able to get it off the ground. become involved in a handful of these sure fire schemes to date, the few I have become involved with have cost me dearly both in time and money. Therefore, this year I have added to my “maximise” resolution a rider, with triplestar rating, advising myself not to allow others to waste any of my precious time or hard-earned money. In readiness, I have prepared a couple of stock questions I intend to ask when, as an entrepreneur, I am approached throughout the year by people with good ideas. The first question I am going to ask is: “Please can you explain what you are going to be doing

while I am carrying out your idea?”; The second question is going to be: “Please can you explain exactly what your idea is going to do to enhance my lifeexperience?” On reflection, had I asked these questions prior to allowing myself to get sucked into the few other people’s madcap good ideas, I would never have become involved in any of them. Good luck to the hopeful who presents the next one - because, with my now-monthly reminders, I am more than ready for you. A very Happy New Year to you all - and an equally-happy February when it comes around. And every month thereafter!

New Year ... new attitudes So Christmas is over for another year and I am getting ready for one of my busiest periods. Sadly for many couples the Christmas break will have brought with it the realisation that their relationship no longer works. As parents they may have agreed to keep things going for the sake of the children and planned to split up after the holiday. For others the combination of spending more time together than usual, high expectations and tricky family dynamics was “the straw that broke the camel’s back”. Either way it is a sad time for all involved and 2014 will not be a year they are looking forward to. As a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator I have to be very sensitive and help couples look ahead, not back.

I help people believe that change is possible. Hope for a new future. Many couples think that the divorce process has to be about point scoring where one party wins and the other loses. So when they come to me I help change that attitude. Collaborative law is a way of doing things differently. Each partner has their own lawyer, we all sit down together to work out a way forward. The whole process is built on trust and transparency; all advice is given openly, meaning there is less confusion and expectations are managed. We try and maintain a positive, practical attitude throughout. Like new years’ resolutions a commitment to doing things differently can go a long way to achieving a

positive way forward. But also like those resolutions no one is going to pretend it is going to be easy to stick to. Because of difficult emotions and old ways of behaving the attitude has to be ‘we are at least going to try and work together to do what is right’. Just a bit of willingness to look forward to 2014, rather than back over difficult times, is often all that is needed. My experience of Collaborative practice has been rewarding because I see many couples resolve to work together and in so doing they are able to move on from the past. Like the New Year and the month of January itself it can be tough and depressing but with a fresh resolve better times are ahead.

Sue Hadfield Author of Change One Thing! This is the time of year when we tend to re-evaluate our lives. The excesses of Christmas are over and we turn our attention to selfimprovement and the challenges of the year ahead. In the cold gloom of January, we may have a general feeling of malaise and a desire to make changes in our relationships or careers. We decide that we must lose weight and get more exercise, or stop smoking and drinking too much alcohol. Or we may be determined to stop overspending and get out of debt. We make New Year resolutions and laugh as we declare: “I know I won’t stick to it; I never do.” Or you may have simply given up making resolutions out of a feeling of hopelessness, that there is no point trying if you know you are going to fail. Some of us make the same resolutions every year, but we

never examine why it is we are unable to achieve our goals. It may seem ironic, but one of the main reasons that people fail is because they do not really believe that it is possible for them to succeed. Imagine if someone told you

you pick up your newspaper, or having a glass of wine when you get home from work. Sometimes, it means replacing an entrenched habit with a new one - like walking to work instead of driving. We don’t actually change. We just stop doing something that we have decided not to do any more and perhaps replace it with something better. So why do we fail? One of the reasons is that the resolutions we make are too general and wide-ranging. If you decide to “Lose weight, drink less and get more exercise”, you are setting yourself up for failure. To make a resolution that you will be able to keep, make it specific and make it positive.

People fail because they do not really believe that it is possible for them to succeed”

that you will never be able to improve your life: this is it and nothing you can do will make any difference. How would you respond? Would you believe them? Or would you be determined to prove them wrong? It can be difficult to change habits that you may have developed over many years. But it is possible. Change usually means stopping doing something that has become habitual - like buying a bar of chocolate when

CHANGE ONE THING! ● Embrace

a happier, more successful you

“Well, I’m only 38 that gives me another 40 years to pursue my dreams”. The trouble is that it doesn’t work like that. The problem is that the increase in life-expectancy has not been matched by an increase in “healthy life-expectancy”.

Sue Hadfield

“You have your whole life ahead of you. Don’t waste it.”

What does healthy life expectancy mean? Did anyone ever say this to you when you were young? Have you ever said it to anyone else? Of course, it is true about all of us – ahead of us lies our future and it is up to us to spend however many years we have in the best way possible. The decisions we make about every aspect of our lives are not just taken at age 18 or 21 but throughout our lives.

Which do you want first – the good news or the bad news? Well the good news is that of the people alive in Britain today, 10 million will live to be 100 (currently the number is 12,640). These people are called the Generation C (for centenarian) and it is estimated that three million of them are presently under the age of 16 and a further five and a half million are under the age of 50. There’s plenty of time then. So what’s the problem? First of all, there isn’t much time between the cradle and the grave. A new-born boy today can expect to live for 78.9 years and a girl to 82.9. You might think,

> Continued from page 1 So you rephrase your resolution: “I am going to eat fruit instead of chocolate - or biscuits, or cake, or pudding - for a month. If you give yourself a time limit, you are much more likely to succeed and you can always keep on once

that you haven’t wasted it in an unhappy relationship or a job that bores you. Indeed, you want

It is easy to make excuses and to compare your lot in life unfavourably with others. It is true that many people who have Scientists at Johns Hopkins made a success University in Baltimore conducted of their lives have done so a study of 6,200 men and women with the help of over a period of eight years and a comfortable isolated four habits that are most background and likely to help you to have a long family support. We want to live as long as possible, but we want to be in good health. Healthy lifeexpectancy is an estimate of the number of healthy years (free from disease or disability – like cancer, dementia or severe arthritis) that a person born in a particular year can expect to live. The average number of years spent with some kind of debilitating illness is subtracted from the average life-expectancy to give us “health-adjusted lifeexpectancy”. The average man in this country can expect to enjoy good health until he is 63 and the average woman 65, according to a report by the Office for National Statistics in 2011. Like everyone else, you will be saying to yourself, “Well, that’s the average. It’s not going to be me. I’m determined to stay fit and well and lead a fulfilling life right to the end.” Of course, you don’t just want to live healthily – you want those years to be happy and rewarding. You want to be able to look back on your life and know that you have fulfilled your potential;

to be aware that you are living a life worth living while you are living it – to know that you are learning new things and using your talents and abilities to the full. If you think of people you admire, they are usually people with a passion: people who have discovered what they enjoy doing and then perfected their sport or their craft and pursue it to its limits. For most people, this is not easy to do. We all have the same things holding us back: that little voice telling us that we’re not good enough; the family background that makes us conform; the tendency to laziness that stops us from achieving our potential.

Is it too late?

you have established your new regime. Another reason for giving up is because we don’t think in advance what we are going to do if we lapse. So we have a cigarette and think: “That’s it. I’ve failed”. Or we over-indulge on a night out

and think: ‘Well, that’s the diet totally out of the window.” In future, see these actions for what they are: one-offs, examples that you are human. Not a failure, just human. Then get back to your new regime the next day. To stick to a New Year’s resolution you have to be

realistic. Realistic about your aim in the first place, particularly if you are trying to lose weight; realistic about how you are going to achieve your aim. Sometimes, you have to avoid the people and places that you know will just tempt you back to your old ways

It is true that there are some things that have to be started when you are very young if you are going to excel: it takes a young body to be the best in some sports. It is possible, though, to do almost anything you want – whatever your age. You may not be able to become an Olympic champion, but it is certainly possible to decide on something that you want to achieve and to become good at it. For some sports and many creative areas of life, there are no age limits – you can become an artist, or an author, or a musician, or a traveller, or a canoeist, a marathon runner or an entrepreneur – whatever you want and whatever your age.

It is not just these kinds of creative activities that can be taken up later in life, many people have changed career and done something totally different in their 40s, 50s and even 60s and 70s. It is sometimes because of a life-changing event, like being made redundant, or having a baby, that makes people realize that they no longer want to do what may have suited them quite well when they were younger. In fact, lots of people fulfil themselves only as they get older. They may not become famous because they just get on with it: studying for a degree in their 70s, setting up a business in retirement, writing a first novel, travelling around the world, becoming a good photographer, a keen birdwatcher, learning a new language, taking up horse-riding, singing or learning to play a musical instrument. You may feel that you have been held back because of a difficult start in life, or poor schooling, or the lack of direction and support from friends and family. Almost all these things can also be a motivation – if you are able to put the past behind you and decide that it is never too late you can still, with a great deal of determination, and some planning, fulfil your dreams.

Wanting it all The prospect of trying to achieve everything can mean you achieve none of the things you most want. Many people rush headfirst

down a career path they think will lead to money, status and success without considering the consequences to their personal lives. Sometimes, you just have to stand back and reflect. What do I really want in life? Who are the most important people in my life? Am I proud of my life so far? What could I do to improve it? If you have a family, you will want them to thrive and to do well so your personal dreams and ambitions may have been pushed to one side. Having to juggle the often conflicting demands of modern life is stressful and sometimes, ironically, leads to the breakdown of family life that the paid work was intended to support. The trouble is that, in the drive to “have it all”, the most important things in life can slip to the bottom of the pile, as “wanting it all” comes to mean a relentless drive to earn more and buy more. We all know of relationships that have ended, children who long to spend more time with their parents, and friendships that are neglected, because work has taken precedence over the things that once mattered the most. The status and financial rewards of any job are meaningless, if you are feeling constantly miserable and anxious. It’s your choice It is, of course, much easier to ignore these niggling doubts and to put up with a life that isn’t quite the dream, or even particularly happy. It can be frightening to move out of your “comfort zone” because, by definition, this is a reassuring place to be. The alternative is not necessarily doing something frightening or risky, just doing something you long to do, but which you feel you “shouldn’t” because it doesn’t conform to what people expect you to do. You may feel trapped in a job that you hate, with colleagues you don’t particularly like, because it is well paid, or at least pays the bills. Some people spend their lives making money, in order to lead a better life, and often sacrifice their health

and their relationships in the process. Quite often, they then spend their later years trying to recover their health (belatedly joining a gym, “detoxing”, having therapy) or patching up their relationship with their children. Whatever age you are now and wherever you are in terms of career, or relationships, or family, you have the rest of your life ahead of you. Don’t squander them by letting the days go by, doing things you don’t enjoy with people you don’t want to be with. These are the best years of your life and it is possible to make a living doing something you enjoy, to spend more time with people you like and to live a happy and fulfilled life. Lots of people do it and there has never been a better time.

“Whatever age you are now and wherever you are in terms of career, or relationships, or family, you have the rest of your life ahead of you to start.”

Change one thing: your secret deadline You may have given yourself an unspoken deadline: “I want to be working for a national newspaper by the time I’m 30” or “I want to be working for myself in the next three years”. In fact, a poll of 1,000 40-year-olds by Skipton Building Society, in 2012, found that the average adult is as much as 19 years behind their own schedule with their life-goals. This feeling of dissatisfaction is surprisingly common, not only in terms of career, but also in terms of the milestones that people want to reach in their personal lives and relationships. The research showed that most adults hoped to start a family by the age of 28 but that 38% are unlikely have done so 10 years later. Of those polled, most had hoped to have met their life partner by the age of 25, but 33% of them were still looking at the age of 40; 13% of them admitted they had yet to find a full-time job. The targets that had been missed by a significant proportion of the people surveyed were: owning a car, writing a will, going abroad twice a year, getting married, or having a civil partnership, starting a pension, and – for 71% – earning more than £30,000 (which they had hoped to do by the time they were 31). If you could go back in time and start all over again, what would you do differently? Would you still pursue the same career? If not, what do you now wish you could have been and done?

ALBION’s season is back up and running after an impressive away win at in-form Ipswich Town. The Seagulls went ahead when Dean Hammond headed in Andrea Orlandi's corner, before Craig Mackail-Smith scored from Ashley Barnes's flick-on. Brighton extended their lead as Gary Dicker's pass picked out Wayne Bridge, who unleashed a superb strike from 35 yards past Town's Stephen Henderson. The hosts had won five of their last seven games, while Brighton failed to record a victory in December. However, Brighton created the best chances at Portman Road and Southampton loanee Hammond gave the visitors a 15thminute lead. Mackail-Smith then doubled his side's advantage with his 11th goal of the season as he out-paced Aaron Cresswell and produced a fine shot that went in off the post. Brighton goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak, making his 100th English league

appearance, denied Murphy, while Lee Martin and Guirane N'Daw wasted good chances for Ipswich. But a spectacular finish from Bridge sealed Brighton's victory, which takes them back up to ninth, three points off a Championship play-off place. GUS POYET has admitted that he has no intention of being 'reasonable' in the January transfer window when it comes to listening to offers for his Brighton & Hove Albion players. The likes of Liam Bridcutt, Craig Mackail-Smith and Will Buckley have been linked with moves away from the club after impressive performances in the Championship this season. However, Poyet is fed up of being asked for too much money for his own transfer targets, particularly British players, and plans to make life equally difficult for his rival bosses. "I don't think I'm going to be reasonable because when I try to buy, nobody is very reasonable," Poyet said in the Daily Star. "British players are overrated - they are too expensive for no reason. "Everybody wants the best British players and that makes you pay too much. "But when you can go overseas and get a better player for half the money the complaint is there are too many foreigners."

January 4 Albion were back on track after a 3-0 win at Ipswich Town. The Seagulls went ahead with a Dean Hammond header; Craig MackailSmith scored the second, before Wayne Bridge got the third with a longrange strike.

Albion gunned down late on THEO Walcott's deflected late winner settled a pulsating encounter and sent Arsenal into the FA Cup fifth round at the expense of battling Brighton. Brighton demonstrated exactly why they are play-off contenders as they pushed Arsenal every inch of the way before finally being beaten by substitute Walcott's strike five minutes from time. Arsenal led twice through Olivier Giroud but in a thunderous atmosphere Brighton bounced back and looked to have secured at least a replay with goals from Ashley Barnes and £2m Argentine striker Leonardo Ulloa on his debut. Arsene Wenger sent on Walcott and Jack Wilshere in the second half to give Arsenal extra thrust and control. And it was Walcott who answered his manager's call with a volley from the edge of the area after Brighton goalkeeper Casper Ankergren punched a corner out to the edge of the area. This was the toughest of examinations for Arsenal - who are seeking their first trophy in eight years - and Wenger's delight at the final

whistle was clear evidence of his relief and pleasure at negotiating it safely. Brighton celebrate the 30th anniversary of reaching the FA Cup final against Manchester United - which they lost after a replay - this year and the old competition certainly stirred the emotions as the stadium crackled with noise and fervour throughout.

Arsenal's visit drew a record crowd to The Amex. Albion: Ankergren, Greer (Dicker 37'), El-Abd, Calderon, Bridge, Hammond, David Lopez, Bridcutt, Buckley (LuaLua - 46'), Barnes, Ulloa (Mackail-Smith - 73') Subs: (Unused) Kuszczak, Painter, Orlandi, Vicente.

LIAM Bridcutt has spoken of his desire to play in the Premier League as Brighton chase promotion this season after their FA Cup defeat to Arsenal on Saturday. Midfielder Bridcutt has produced a series of impressive performances in the Championship this season to reportedly attract the attention of clubs in the top flight. Seagulls manager Gus Poyet has previously tipped Bridcutt to make it to the very top of the game, and he had the chance to test himself against high-class opposition last weekend. "I've always said that I want to play in the Premier League," he said. "I think I am good enough to play there. Gus has given me a great opportunity and I want to progress as much as I can." Bridcutt enjoyed lining up against Arsenal stars such as Jack Wilshere, having faced the Arsenal midfielder in a number of youth-team games during his time as a youngster at Chelsea. The 23-year-old said: "Jack is a top quality player and will have a long career in the game for Arsenal and England.”

"I'm delighted. It was all agreed in principle coming on loan. Obviously I've worked with the gaffer a number of times and there was no problem with that. "A lot of people don't see the side to the gaffer that we do - on the pitch, on the training field, on the bus and in the changing room. "It's every player's dream, especially in the Championship - they want to be playing in the Premier League. You go away and have a nice holiday, but still in the back of your mind, you've only got four weeks off, so maybe in a week and a half, you're going to know who you're playing in that first game.”

DAVID Lopez's fifth goal of the season proved enough to sink Burnley and help Brighton climb into the top six of the Championship table. The Spaniard struck from 12 yards after connecting with Andrea Orlandi's cross as Gus Poyet's side secured a third win in four league games. Burnley battled and would have come away with at least a point but for heroics from keeper Tomasz Kuszczak. The Pole saved well from Junior Stanislas and Jason Shackell. Kuszczak also denied Kieran Trippier towards the end yet the Clarets are now without a win in five league games. Having weathered early pressure from the visitors, Brighton settled and took the lead in the 20th minute when Orlandi delivered a centre from the left for Lopez to strike home first time. Burnley's response was swift. Stanislas's shot from distance had to be

met with a desperate block by full-back Bruno before Shackell's header from Keith Treacy's 34th-minute corner was parried by Kuszczak. Brighton spurned chances to increase their lead after half-time, with both Jose Ulloa and Lopez left frustrated. At the other end, Chris McCann should have done better when presented with an opportunity from six yards out before Kuszczak produced another fine save to keep out Trippier. And there was still time for Charlie Austin to miss out on his 25th goal of the campaign, the Clarets forward missing the target with a header. Brighton manager Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex’s Johnny Cantor: "We are back in the top six and that is where we want to be. "David Lopez scored with a great finish and then our goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak made a great save. That`s the kind of quality that helps you win games. "I like what I'm seeing. We now have a

THE JUICE BREAKFAST SHOW with ALBION WILL FACE more Spanish opposition this summer with a mouthwatering friendly against La Liga side Villarreal at the Amex on Saturday 27th July, kicking-off at 7.30pm. The Spanish visitors are on good form, securing promotion to the Spanish topflight on the last day of last season. They beat third-placed Almeria, who eventually got promoted in the play-offs largely due to Leo Ulloa’s successor Charles. Speculation mounts over the line-up that new Villarreal manager, Marcelino Garcia, will play at the Amex. One of their

But when you prepare for a game and you've done something in training which you then see the results of on the pitch, it makes you very happy."

OSCAR GARCIA has promised to bring a touch of Barcelona to Brighton and Hove Albion after being appointed boss of the Seasiders. The 40-year-old former Barca midfielder oversaw his first training session last week after taking over as the Seagulls' new head coach. "I'm impressed with the people I'm working with at Brighton and I'm very happy, it's a pleasure for me to be here," he said. "In the morning I met all the players and I saw a lot of good things. I knew English football and I knew some players who are playing here. "My obsession is to attack, to attack the opposition, to keep the ball and to have the ball as many times as possible. If we have the ball we will have many chances to score and win the game. That's my philosophy. "If you play good football you will have more chances to win than if you play bad." Despite a successful playing career which also took in Valencia and Espanyol, Garcia, who quit as boss of Maccabi Tel Aviv last month, says he was always destined to become a manager. Seagulls head north to Elland Road for fiery start to new season OSCAR GARCIA faces a baptism of fire at Elland Road as the Seagulls begin life after Gus Poyet in front of a bumper crowd at Leeds. The Yorkshire club have reportedly already sold more than 28,000 tickets for tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) and the attendance will no doubt be further boosted by a sizeable contingent travelling from Sussex for a first competitive glimpse of new Albion head coach. However, even the most rabid of opposition support would be unlikely to faze the Albion’s new numero uno. In an interview with a national newspaper this week, the one-time Barcelona youth team boss lifted the lid on his time managing Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel – a spell which saw match preparations derailed by Hamas missile attacks and security briefings. Alongside such experiences the “How will they cope at Doncaster on a Tuesday night in December” question almost ritualistically asked of newly arrived foreign bosses is unlikely to apply. What does remain to be seen though is how far advanced Oscar

is in adapting Poyet’s approach to fit his higher tempo, more attacking style. Pre-season matches have seen the Albion look to move the ball up the pitch far faster than under Oscar’s predecessor and shift the passing focus from along the back four to the sharp end of the Albion midfield. Thankfully, Oscar and his team look set to head north without any fresh injury concerns. Striker Will Hoskins is now expected to miss the majority of the season after a further set back while Craig Mackail-Smith is still some way a return to first team action. However, pre-season twinges elsewhere do not appear to have translated into anything more serious. Leo Ulloa therefore remains the only obvious choice to start in the central striking slot. Will Buckley and Ashley Barnes look to be leading the race to start on either side of the line-leading Argentinian. David Lopez returned to the Albion this and his new manager has been impressed by his high fitness levels despite the Spaniard missing a large chunk of pre-season. Recent arrival Kemy Agustien is in the same

boat as Lopez in terms of lacking match time and Oscar is unlikely to use both from the start. He could therefore team certain-starter Liam Bridcutt with one of the duo and Andrea Orlandi, who led the Seagulls in assists last term with 11. Left back remains a problem area for Brighton after the Albion lost out to Reading over the signing of last season’s loan revelation Wayne Bridge. Despite giving considerable pre-season game time to both Vitalijs Maksimenko and Adam Chicksen, who arrived this summer from MK Dons, Oscar is almost certain to start with Inigo Calderon on the left alongside Matthew Upson, Gordon Greer and fellow swashbuckling Spaniard Bruno. Brighton’s hosts will be without Rodolph Austin and El-Hadji Diouf as both are still under suspension for red cards shown during the Albion’s end of season trip to Elland Road. Likely line-up: Kuszczak, Bruno, Greer, Upson, Calderon, Bridcutt, Lopez, Orlandi, Barnes, Ulloa, Buckley. Likely subs: Brezovan, El Abd, Chicksen, Agustien, March, Lua Lua, Barker.

Key man

Matthew Upson Brighton fans breathed a sigh of relief when Matthew Upson agreed to join the Seagulls on a free transfer this summer. A 20-game loan spell last season resulted in a boost in Brighton's performances and his experience

almost helped the Albion into the top flight. Having lost out on Wayne Bridge, the capture of Upson was almost essential. He brings out the best in both his likely partners in Gordon Greer and Adam El Abd.

Albion reject four Crystal Palace offers ALBION’S arch rivals Crystal Palace bid for four Seagulls players during the final days of the transfer window. The Seagulls confirmed they had rejected bids from the Selhurst Park outfit for Leo Ulloa and Liam Bridcutt, with figures thought to be around the £5million mark for the Argentinian and £2million for the Scottish international. However, the Brighton and Hove Independent has learnt that Ian Holloway also made approaches for Ashley Barnes and Kazenga Lua Lua. The newspaper learnt this week that there had been definite interest in the pair and it is believed bids were lodged for both the forward and the left wing flyer. This followed suggestions by a Mirror journalist with close links to the Eagles that the Brighton quartet had been serious transfer targets for the Premier League side. Barnes was also the subject of considerable interest from fellow Championship side Burnley, who are hunting for a cut-price replacement for the recently departed Charlie Austin. Nottingham Forest also contacted the Albion to ask about Bridcutt’s availability but were told the same as Crystal Palace – that the two-time player of the year was not for sale unless the offer was substantially greater than the

Tony Bloom has so far resisted the temptation to sell the family silver meaning, despite the fact head coach Oscar Garcia was unable to add new reinforcements to his squad, most fans will be pleased with how the club negotiated the window. Brighton had been relatively busy earlier in the summer, bringing Kemy Agustien, Adam Chicksen, Stephen Ward and Keith Andrews to the south coast as well as re-signing crowd favourite David Lopez. However, with Craig MackailSmith’s rehabilitation suffering a recent set back and Barnes still sitting out training as a result of a hip injury he picked up during the away win at Birmingham City, Oscar will almost certainly look to exploit the loan window to add

another attacking player to his roster. With Championship clubs now on an international break, Oscar has targeted a loan signing by the time his charges return to action away to heavily-fancied Reading. The Albion have also reiterated the fact that any money generated from potential player sales would be ploughed back into Oscar’s budget rather than used to take a chunk out of the club’s projected £8million annual loses. Nobody though will be leaving until January at the very earliest. Elsewhere this week Bloom had to reject an approach from Spanish outfit Osasuna who asked the Albion for permission to speak to Oscar about their recently-vacated manager position. The move was immediately rebuffed and Osasuna appointed Javi Garcia instead, although Oscar was believed to be their first choice.

when a short corner routine ended with Liam Bridcutt chipping the ball into the area and Inigo Calderon turning and firing inches wide from eight yards. Yet Charlton boast one of the best away records in the Championship and it was soon clear why as they managed to stifle the hosts as the half wore on. However, that meant they offered little threat in attack with their only goalscoring opportunity coming from Yann Kermorgant's shot which flew over the top. The visitors fired another warning early in the second half when young winger Callum Harriott cut inside and drilled an angled shot just wide. That stung Brighton into life, though, and they should have opened the scoring on the hour when Vicente got to the byline. The former Spain midfielder's cross left Will Buckley with a free header but the winger nodded wastefully wide. Dorian Dervite flashed a header wide for Charlton but Brighton remained in charge and

BRIGHTON missed the chance to move up to fifth in the Championship as they drew 0-0 with dogged Charlton on Tuesday. The stalemate at the Amex Stadium keeps Gus Poyet's men sixth in the table. The Seagulls hit the woodwork twice during stoppage time but could not find their way past Chris Powell's hard-working side. They could have climbed up to fifth with a victory, and thought they had secured one when Vicente rattled the crossbar and Gordon Greer hit a post. Albion were at least able to maintain their unbeaten home record in 2013 but missed a big chance to open a gap on the chasing play-off pack. Brighton dominated throughout with Wayne Bridge overlapping from left-back to provide an early chance for Leonardo Ulloa, whose shot was blocked by Michael Morrison. Matt Upson the rose highest to meet Vicente's corner but his header was too close to Addicks keeper Ben Hamer. Their best chance of the first half came

Calderon fired off target again after the Addicks made a meal of David Lopez's corner. Vicente's quick feet then gave him a glimpse of goal but his 20-yard drive was tipped wide by Hamer. Dale Stephens brought a fine save out of Tomasz Kuszczak with a long-range effort before the assistant referee indicated four minutes of stoppage time.

It was the most dramatic four minutes of the match as Hamer tipped Vicente's shot onto the crossbar, and from the resulting corner Greer's header came back off the inside of the post. In the absence of Liam Bridcutt, Andrew Crofts has established himself as the senior figure in the Brighton midfield with a string of all-action performances. The Wales international struggled at times last season to find his feet following his return from Norwich City but seems to be flourishing under Oscar Garcia’s more direct approach.

Tomorrow’s match looks set to be a clash of cultures, with Doncaster conceding an average of 51% possession at home so far this season. Albion boast an average of 55% possession when away, hinting it could be Brighton who enjoy more of the ball. However, Doncaster lead the league in aerial duels won (58.5%) while Brighton have a far less impressive average of 47%. Rovers have also scored 55% (six) of their goals from set pieces – suggesting Brighton will be well advised to limit the number of corners and free kicks they give away in tempting areas.

Albion not rushing to decide on Gus Poyet's future BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION say they will take "as long as necessary" to complete their inquiry into suspended manager Gus Poyet and his coaching staff. Poyet, assistant boss Mauricio Taricco and first-team coach Charlie Oatway were told to stay away from the club in the aftermath of their play-off semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace earlier this month. Brighton are still making no comment on the events surrounding the trio's suspension but, in a statement on the club's website, chief executive Paul Barber revealed the inquiry into the incident before their play-off tie with Crystal Palace last month is ongoing. "We are conducting these matters reasonably, in light of all the circumstances," Barber said. "These processes will take as long as is necessary." Barber, in a statement on the club website, added: "The club will not be making any public comment on the matter until we are in a position to do so. "We are aware of some ill-informed and unfounded speculation appearing in various

places. It is both unfair and unhelpful to everyone concerned. “I appreciate that the issues we have had to face in recent weeks have created some uncertainty and concern for some of our supporters "Unfortunately, this is something we must all live with for the time being. "Our priority will always be to ensure that we continue to manage the variety of situations that can develop within the club with as much confidentiality, professionalism, and dignity as possible for everyone concerned." Meanwhile Barber says the Championship club are unlikely to identify who carried out an act of vandalism in the Crystal Palace dressing room ahead of the second leg of their play-off semi-final. Brighton apologised to Palace for the incident, in which excrement was found in the visitors' dressing room. Eagles manager Ian Holloway later said it had helped motivate his side to win at the Amex. "This issue generated very negative press coverage, inconvenience to our visitors for which we have apologised, as

Albion said they would take “as long as necessary” to complete the inquiry into suspended manager Gus Poyet and his coaching staff, who had been told to stay away from the club after a play-off semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace.

well as speculation and rumour, much of it exaggerated or untrue," Barber said. "To be clear, the incident was confined to the floor and to the paper dispenser area of one cubicle in the visitors' dressing room toilets. "No 'messages' were scrawled on the floor or anywhere else. And it remains a slight possibility that this was not a deliberate act of vandalism as attempts had been made to clean up the area before the issue was brought to our attention.

"Numerous club employees and contractors need access to the tunnel area of our stadium to do their jobs. "There is no evidence that a member of the club's staff was responsible. Equally, we cannot be sure who was. "Unfortunately, we are very unlikely to know exactly what happened, but access and security to the tunnel area have been reviewed and some changes will be implemented next season. "It is now time to move on."

Albion reveals new away kit ALBION’S new away kit will be a yellow shirt, with navy pin stripes, navy shorts, and yellow and navy socks. The new design features new club sponsor American Express, and complements the club’s new home strip, revealed in April. The striking new away strip was unveiled for the first time at Errea’s 25th anniversary dinner in Parma last night, as the Italian kit specialists showcased their various kits for the 2013/14 season. Business development manager Paul Rogers commented: “We wanted something

bright and bold, a change strip which would complement the new home strip. We are really pleased with the design, cut and finished product. “A lot of thought has gone into the design of these kits and we hope fans will like it as much as those of us who have been involved in the design and creation. “The initial reaction from the supporters has been great, and everyone at the club is delighted by the overwhelming positive response to both new strips for next season.”

Big match preview: Doncaster Rovers vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton’s grave injury list is finally easing ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday) trip to Doncaster Rovers – although the game is likely to come too soon for any of the long-term absentees to make too meaningful an appearance. Liam Bridcutt has returned to training this week but is unlikely to feature tomorrow while Andrea Orlandi has been pencilled in for a comeback in one of the Albion’s next two fixtures – although the home game with Blackburn appears the more probable. Leo Ulloa and Craig MackailSmith should be back in action next month and Kemy Agustien has also stepped up his recovery following a stop-start opening few weeks to life at The Amex. Oscar Garcia will be confident his side can address their five game winless streak against a Doncaster side who go into the match on the back of a pair of heavy defeats. Rovers have lost their last two outings (away to Reading and Middlesbrough) and leaked eight goals in the process – scoring just once in return. It is the sort of statistic which will be music to Oscar’s ears at a time when his own attacking players have struggled to score on a regular basis. With his wellexecuted equaliser in the televised

but, with two goals to his name, is unlikely to make way with the Seagulls’ chief goal threat missing in Ulloa. Who gets the nod for the third slot is far more unclear. Bruno may be given another chance to impress after a pair of neat through balls almost resulted in early goals against Wednesday, although fans would no doubt prefer a return from either Ince, Jake Forster-Caskey or Kemy Agustien. If that happens Inigo Calderon could drop to the bench to accommodate Bruno in his more natural right back role. Whoever ends up in that full back position will have to be on their toes to guard Forest’s in-form Andy Reid, with the left midfielder already chalking up five goals and four assists this season flitting between a central slot and a wide position.

Winger Will Buckley hoped the Seagulls could remain relaxed in the Championship play-offs after a 2-1 victory away to Leeds United. He said: “It is going to be great and exciting but there will be a lot of pressure.”

Brighton, who last played in the top tier in 1983, now face a wait to find out who they will face in their semi-final tie. "Every team will be up for it and it will be 50-50 whoever we play in the semi-finals," Buckley said. "We can dare to dream to get to that final. The top six are all good teams in this league so it is going to be difficult, but we are looking forward to them." Albion midfielder Dean Hammond was pleased the club have managed to secure a play-off place with one game of the season to spare. "It is nice to achieve it and it is what we have been working for all season," Hammond told BBC Sussex. "The play-offs are one-off games. We don't fear anyone. "When we are playing well and on top form we are a good team. "Once you are in the play-offs, the aim is to get promoted and we will be working hard to achieve that."

BRIGHTON & Hove Albion winger Will Buckley hopes the club can remain relaxed in the Championship play-offs. The Seagulls ensured a place in the top six with Saturday's 2-1 win at Leeds. He told BBC Sussex’s sports presenter, Johnny Cantor: "It is going to be great and exciting but there will be a lot of pressure. We know we are good enough to get in the Premier League this season. "We will be putting pressure on ourselves but we have just got to enjoy it now." He added: "It [playing in the Premier League] is what everyone dreams of." Buckley, who extended his contract until the summer of 2017 in January, said he believed the Seagulls would be able to challenge for promotion this season. "I did, to be honest," the 23-year-old said. "I expected it in the first season [last year] but it is not as easy as that coming up from League One. "We set our standards last year and we have built on it this season and got there in the end."

not arrive. And Brighton fans, who have seen their side struggle in front of goal in recent weeks, will hardly be armoured with the prospect of seeing the Seagulls soldiering through the next two months with just one forward – particular as Barnes picked up his third booking of the season on Tuesday. Against Wednesday Brighton managed just four shots on target – four more than they registered during the away defeat at Ipswich Town – and Oscar has spoken of the need to be more clinical when presented with goal-scoring chances. Just seven Championship sides have scored fewer goals this term – although Brighton do have the same number as Queens Park Rangers, who currently sit in third place. All eyes will be on Oscar’s midfield selection for the visit of the Tricky Trees, with the Spaniard raising eyebrows by selection Bruno in the middle of the park for both previous outings. Rohan Ince, who won man of the match in the victory over Bolton Wanderers, has not featured since, while David Lopez returned to the starting line-up on Tuesday but again failed to impress. Keith Andrews – who boasts an impressive pass completion rate of 85.9 per cent – is almost certain to figure after his late strike salvaged a point midweek, and Andrew Crofts should accompany him. The Welsh international has been guilty of missing the target in recent games

October Albion’s injury crisis shows no signs of easing ahead of the visit of big-spending promotion hopefuls Nottingham Forest – with Leo Ulloa likely to be out for up to two months. The goal-grabbing Argentinian was taken to hospital during the Seagulls tame 1:1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night and early indications are the striker could be left nursing a fractured foot. His absence, which comes hot on the heels of a three-match ban, will heap further pressure on Brighton director of football David Burke to recruit a loan signing to compete with Ashley Barnes. Barnes, who failed to find the net while deputising for Ulloa during his suspension, is Brighton’s only fit senior striker and supporters will be expecting the club to provide head coach Oscar Garcia with a temporary reinforcement. The Brighton hierarchy have already been criticised by some sections of the crowd for not signing a loan striker at the tail end of last season when Barnes himself was suspended for a run of games, leaving Ulloa as the lone option. And similar gripes surfaced earlier this campaign when Craig Mackail-Smith was ruled out for an extended spell and Ulloa banned for three matches. Albion claimed a move had been lined up early in the loan window but the striker, thought to be Tottenham’s Jonathan Obika, did

Some sections of the Albion support have criticised Bruno during recent games after an unsuccessful experiment in midfield saw him replace fans’ favourite Inigo Calderon in his more natural right back position. During the second half against Watford, Bruno showed signs of returning to his best going forward and his developing partnership with Will Buckley remains key to the Seagulls attack. ASSISTS*

up, Leicester should have the advantage in attack, where David Nugent and Jamie Vardy have 15 goals between them. Leicester have, in fact, found the net nine times more than the Seagulls in the opening 18 league games. Fans will intrigued to see whether Oscar restores Rohan Ince to the Albion side after the dominant midfielder sat out the Barnsley game having been withdrawn in the second half draw with Bournemouth suffering from cramp. Ince has been in impressive form in recent weeks and the Seagulls clearly missed his energy, strength and drive during the moralesapping defeat on Tuesday as the midfield struggled to gain any momentum in attacking situations.

Albion Team News

Jake Forster-Caskey would seem the obvious player to make way for a returning Ince while Oscar will also have to decide whether to start with Will Buckley in place of David Lopez out wide. The Albion looked one-paced for much of the midweek defeat but improved slightly after the introduction of Buckley. Kemy Agustien could also force his way into Oscar’s reckoning after an encouraging cameo against Barnsley showed glimpses of his creative talent. Ashley Barnes will almost certainly lead the line again as a lone striker, with Oscar’s reluctance to trial a two-pronged attack against The Tykes suggesting he is unlikely to do so against the highflying Foxes.

Worth a fiver... Half time correct score 1-0: 100/30

The first half was really disappointing – and our poorest performance of the season – but in the second half we played much better and in the last 30 minutes we had enough chances to draw and even to win. “We didn’t start well. We let them have the ball and didn’t put them under pressure quickly enough; we allowed them to be comfortable on the ball, and we weren’t comfortable when we didn’t have it. “I’ve told the players we have to start all the games at 100%. “If they [Barnsley] continue to play the way they did this evening, then they will not be at the bottom at the end of the season and will maintain their Championship status.”

Albion need improvement to snare the on-form Foxes Oscar Garcia will be looking for a drastic improvement from his team following Tuesday’s humbling at home to rock-bottom Barnsley. And his charges will have to perform far better when they welcome table-topping Leicester City to The Amex tomorrow afternoon (Saturday). The Seagulls struggled to open up a Barnsley team which had previously leaked 35 goals in 17 games and are unlikely to find it any easier against a Foxes defence which has given up just a goal a game this campaign. Leicester City’s back four will likely be marshalled by the imposing Wes Morgan who remains one of the division’s top central defenders and leads his team in average rating this season. And, with Brighton’s defence also among the Championship’s stingiest, despite conceding uncharacteristically soft goals in midweek, tomorrow’s match is likely to be a low-scoring affair. In Tomasz Kuszczak and Kasper Schmeichel, Brighton and Leicester boast two of the best ‘keepers outside the top flight – with the Albion custodian shortlisted for the November player of the month prize. However, unless Leo Ulloa can return to the starting line-

Since his arrival last season, Upson has become a central figure in the Albion’s ever-solid defence. The former England player has improved the back four and provides an air of authority amid the hurly burly of the average Championship match. Understated Upson has helped Ward recapture some of his best form since the left back arrived on loan from Wolves and Upson is often the starting point for many an Albion attack.

The secret’s out – Walter Mitty has his ups and downs is based on a 1939 two-and-ahalf page short story by James Thurber that became part of the language, with “a Walter Mitty figure” coming to mean a hopeless day-dreaming type whose fantasy life is at direct odds with their drab reality. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (PG) Running time: 114 mins Director: Ben Stiller Starring: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine The Secret Life of Walter Mitty boasts some stunning scenery and a handful of likeable performances, but it’s let down by a trite script, a distracting amount of shockingly blatant product placement and, ironically considering the source material, a lack of imagination. What’s it all about? The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Love Brighton-ICE:Layout 1

When obnoxious bearded moneyman Hendricks announces that Life Magazine will be printing its final issue, Mitty is threatened with redundancy unless he tracks down a missing negative from adventurer-slash-photographer Sean O’Connell (Sean Penn). Inspired by Cheryl, Mitty sets off on a A hopeless day-dreamer real-life adventure who works in the photo that will take him to department of Life Magazine” Greenland, Iceland and the Himalayas. relationship to the 1947 Danny Kaye film version, this modern update stars Stiller as Mitty, a hopeless day-dreamer who works in the photo department of Life Magazine and harbours a secret crush on friendly coworker Cheryl (Kristen Wiig).

Page 1

The Good Stiller delivers a likeable performance as Mitty, particularly in the first half of the film when he’s more putupon schlub than globe-trotting adventurer. Wiig is equally good as kind hearted Cheryl, but she’s criminally under used, though she does get to appear in the film’s best scene, when Mitty is inspired to get on a helicopter piloted by a drunken Icelander (Olfur Darri Olafsson), because he fantasises about Cheryl

Ben Stiller, a daydreaming magazine photo editor, sets off on a real-life adventure

singing Major Tom to him. The Bad Aside from a lack of chemistry between Stiller and Wiig, the film’s main problem is that the script fails to engage on an emotional level - it settles for the bland straightforwardness of its rather trite Just Do It message and ends up coming across like an advert in the process. It also, ironically, suffers from a crucial lack of imagination

(almost all the fantasy scenes are in the trailer) and pretty much abandons the whole daydreaming comedy premise at around the halfway mark. Worth seeing? Stiller’s likeability ensures that The Secret life of Walter Mitty remains watchable, but it’s ultimately let down by a trite, unimaginative script that fails to connect either emotionally or dramatically.

The places I eat

More winners that are... the best places to eat in Brighton 2013 Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn

The second instalment of my favourite food establishments in Brighton and Hove in 2013 focuses on takeaways and street food. As before, it has been a difficult task – but one which I have enjoyed. So congratulations to both the winners and the runners-up. And a Happy New Year to all food-lovers!

Winner: Likkle Bickle Runner-up: Picnic Corner

The company set up by three friends who had a shared love of pizza, authenticity and beautiful design take the “Best takeaway” accolade. Pizzaface is much loved across the city, so much so that this year they opened a second branch in Hove in order to cope with demand in the Hangleton, Portslade and Southwick areas of the city. Sourcing their produce as locally as possible and reaching out further for authentic Italian meats, these ingredients are baked in a stone oven on pizza bases made from Sardinian flour and all cooked fresh to order. Favourites include the Cuca (mozzarella, smoked mozzarella, shitake and oyster mushrooms, caramelised onion, rosemary and Napoli salami) and the Aurelio (smoked pancetta, wild boar, mascarpone, cherry tomatoes and fresh rosemary). With hundreds of bottles of wine on offer, it is often hard to choose something that is . really worth drinking. A little bit of knowledge goes a long way so, over the coming weeks, we will be putting together a scrapbook guide to what’s what in the world of wine. By far the most popular grape variety is Cabernet Sauvignon. This cross between the Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc grapes originated in the Bordeaux region of France in the 17th century. It needs well-drained, gravel-rich soil - which is why it is so popular with growers not only in France, but also in Italy, California, Australia and parts of South America. These thick-skinned, tightly-clustered grapes produce deep, rich wines with the hint of redcurrants and dark fruit, gentle tannins and, often, a smoky-oaky finish. They are a perfect partner for rich red meats such as roast lamb or a fine steak – or, by itself, as an excellent drinking red.

Yoga can add enjoyment to holidays of all kinds from surfing to skiing Tom Gallagher @GallagherTDG

The art and practice of yoga has been studied for centuries and many have travelled thousands of miles in pursuit of inner stillness. These days, yoga retreats set in beautiful locations across the globe welcome tourists in search of a bit more spirituality to their holiday. There are more inspiring adventures in yoga than ever

before. The symbiosis between sport and yoga is well-documented. Many extol the virtues of the ancient art in benefiting another activity; just ask footballer Ryan Giggs. Yoga-assisted surfing in Costa Rica, scuba-diving in Egypt, and even alpine skiing offer enriching experiences and thrilling activity amid exotic climes. Voted in the top-10 best yoga retreats by The Guardian newspaper, The Yoga Farm in Costa Rica combines yoga

Flowery prose - and no cons with Organic Botanics Herbalist Celsi Richfield established the pioneering Brighton-based Organic Botanics in 1998. Celsi’s busy daughter, Tian, runs the family business with help from her team and grownup sons, who export worldwide. Organic Botanics blend ethical standards into high-performance products. I could not dream up a lovelier, more effective range. In fact, I have been fighting off friends and family to retain the testers for myself. My mum tried to nab the

Organic Damask Rose and Orange Flower Daily Renewal Elixir (£12.50 for 10mls); she normally prefers creams and liked the Organic Moisturising Nutritive Medium Light. Which is also nice for men after a shave. She converted to the oil after I enthused - first because of the delightful aroma, and then the effectiveness once she had used it. We also liked the Floral Toning Lotion (£7.90 for 50mls); the smell is incredible and it cleans your face quickly.

instruction atop an open deck overlooking the beach with expert surfing instruction. Its week-long Surfin’ Yogis experience offers seven nights’ accommodation with daily yoga classes and a complimentary surfboard. Owners of the farm are proud of the part it plays in the ecology of Costa Rica and you will be hard-pushed to find a more environmentally-sustainable experience elsewhere. The next Surfin’ Yogis week begins on January 22. The Yoga Farm says: “Surfing and yoga have a long history of mutual influence. Both practices bring inner peace, balance and joy to the practitioner’s life and this week-long camp was developed to demonstrate the benefits of both.” Brighton-based Adventure Yogi (www.adventureyogi.com) organises several scuba-diving holidays throughout the world and has added the Andaman Islands for 2014. The archipelago set in the Indian Ocean is a hidden tropical paradise where some exceptional diving can be found.

Inner peace, balance and joy for holidaymakers who go surfing

The company believes that for the diver, yoga can greatly help with air consumption thanks to the meditative techniques used to encourage effective and steady breathing. The week-long diving and yoga holiday begins on February 26. Adventure Yogi’s most successful breaks are its Snow Yogi adventures in the French Alps. Several alpine resorts are used and combine yoga instruction and expert ski and snowboard tuition. The dynamic nature of downhill skiing or snowboarding may seem far removed from the more prone state of affairs of yoga. But it is their differences that make them great, the company claims. The physical nature of the sport places a heavy burden on joints and muscles and much concentration is required to maintain balance. All of this and more can be practised in

early-morning yoga sessions while the sun sparkles on the snowy mountainside. Snow Yogi runs from the March 9 to March 16 and includes seven nights’ accommodation minutes from the lifts as well as morning and evening yoga sessions. Travel, yoga and activity appear to be an increasingly-potent combination for holidaymakers. The spiritual nature of each complements the other for an unforgettable travel experience.

The ability to predict whether it is going to rain or not is something that would come in handy when living in drizzly England. That old wives’ tale of “if the cows are lying down, a rainstorm is imminent” comes to mind. But maybe we can look closer to home, away from the farmyard, to prophesy the occurrence of rain. As unlikely as it may seem, there is now strong research into how arthritic joints react to rain, cold, sleet, adverse weather, in general, which suggests that people suffering from arthritis are as close to a barometer as anything. Acting as real-life downpour predictor. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition affecting joints in the body, most commonly the joints of the lower back, neck, hips, knees, shoulders and hands. In healthy joints, a space is present between the bones that comprise the joint and, over time, these spaces narrow resulting in the bone surfaces grinding together. Which causes pain. So what happens to these joints before and during rain? There has been an extensive amount of research into the relationship between atmospheric conditions and arthritic joint pain. A drop in barometric pressure, which refers to the atmospheric conditions, occurs before the onset of a rainstorm and is the most likely explanation for the changes in joint functionality.

Using a balloon as an example, when the barometric pressure drops around a balloon, the air in the balloon will expand, causing it to swell. The same thing happens to tissues in the body when the atmospheric pressure drops. In regard to arthritic joints, any additional impingement of bones or tissue swelling will result in a significant increase in discomfort, caused by further irritation to the joint spaces and to nerves in the area. For those suffering from arthritis in Brighton, Hove and beyond, in case you were thinking of emigrating, it is important to stress that the general weather conditions do not worsen degenerative joint conditions; it is purely the transient drop in barometric pressure that causes irritation of tissues that can return to their normal state with regular barometric pressure. As much as people who experience arthritis do have an almost-supernatural intuition as a by-product of their ailment, it is a very widespread and common affliction. Name: Maheta Molango DoB: 24 July 1982 Place of birth: Switzerland Position: Centre forward

#24:

Maheta Molango may have only played half a dozen games for the Albion but he will forever be remembered by fans for scoring less than ten seconds into his debut. The likeable striker arrived after being released by SV Wacker Burghausen in Germany, previously playing for Atletico Madrid. It didn’t work out in the longterm but few Brighton players enjoyed such an encouraging start to life on the south coast.

Albion players likely to be in demand in January sales Richard Morris

The January sales may have started but Brighton fans will be hoping Tony Bloom can keep any bargain hunters at bay as the club try and negotiate a tricky transfer window. Interest in Oscar Garcia’s players is likely to be high – with approaches for at least three players being reported even before the clock ticked round to 2014. Sunderland – managed by former Brighton boss Gus Poyet – have had bids for both Liam Bridcutt and Will Buckley dismissed as derisory by the Seagulls hierarchy, with the figures widely believed to be around £2million for Bridcutt and £1.75million for Buckley. Reports on Wearside suggest £2million is as high as Poyet is prepared to go to land his former midfield fulcrum, with who he shares an agent. He will no doubt find his approaches hamstrung by comments he made during his spell as Seagulls manager. Poyet

Will Buckey has been rumoured to be on Sunderland’s hit list for January

previously said he would not only sign Bridcutt if he was manager of Real Madrid, but also that Buckley was worth more than the £10million Manchester United paid for Crystal Palace star Wilfied Zaha. Both players would surely favour a tilt at the top flight and the inevitable wage increase it would bring and Poyet will almost certainly return with upped offers. However, with limited funds to spend at the Stadium of Light and a more pressing need to recruit a goal scorer, he may need to ship out some of his current squad to fund improved bids.

Brighton chairman Bloom has publicly said any funds generated by player sales would be channelled back into Oscar Garcia’s playing budget and the current head coach may decide he needs to bite the bullet and cash in on Bridcutt in order to fund what would be the first wave of actual Oscar-driven recruitment. Ashley Barnes is another in demand. Burnley, who seem to be preparing for life without Premier Leaguelinked Danny Ings, asked about the forward’s availability earlier in the season and are rumoured to have returned with a £750,000 opening bid.

Brighton vs Reading: Travel advice for Albion supporters Brighton want to remind supporters that travel to and from tomorrow’s match with Reading is NOT included in the match ticket. Straight from the commentary box After a rather soggy and frustrating start to 2014, the Albion embark on a new FA Cup campaign. The competition has been pretty good to the Seagulls over the last few years. The former manager Gus Poyet was fairly fortunate with some big home draws to enjoy against Newcastle and Arsenal and a high profile tie at Liverpool which ended up finally in disappointment. Much has been written about the supposed demise of the FA Cup but Wigan’s victory in last year’s final proved there is still excitement to be gained from a Wembley final. With Premier League sides resting key players, teams from the Championship have a real opportunity and although it’s nice to see the stars of the top-flight, lower league clubs eye a useful revenue stream and day in the spotlight. We must not forget, however, Albion too have had to make

have won in the replay and again it went to a last gasp ending with the Seagulls progressing late but before midnight.

As a player Oscar enjoyed cup success

This weekend’s 3rd Round FA Cup tie at fellow Championship side The Spaniard Reading isn’t the most sensational of was highly successful ties as the teams have as a player in cup met regularly recently competitions” but if it is Albion who are represented by ball number 26 in the 4th round trips to non-league teams in draw on Sunday it could take recent years where their own us to Old Trafford or Rochdale. credibility has been tested, Some may argue it’s debatable taken to replays by FC United, which is the trickier game on Woking and Wrexham. ‘‘ Leo Ulloa, recently returned from injury, looked a little rusty against Bournemouth

impressed during Leo Ulloa’s absence and, with rumoured interest from Burnley and Wolves, will no doubt be looking for assurances over his role in the team. However, Ulloa looked rusty against Bournemouth and would almost certainly benefit from more match time as he looks to recover his sharpness in front of goal. One option would be to start with both, with Barnes playing a narrow support role in place of David Lopez or Kazenga Lua Lua before replacing Ulloa in the central striking position after an hour or so - assuming everything is going to plan on the pitch. Albion fans hoping for hint as to Bridcutt’s future should resist reading too much into any absence from the starting line-up.

Worth a fiver... Both teams to score in first half: 9/2

Sunderland, with who the player has been heavily linked, will not be signing anyone with an FA Cup run in mind. A player being cup tied is unlikely to deter future bids from a team prioritising Premier League survival. The FA Cup does though seem the perfect opportunity to involve some of the Albion’s youngsters in the first team squad. Oscar has been praised by some supporters for blooding young players but in truth only Forster-Caskey and Ince have benefited – with the former already expected to push on and the later, at 21, perhaps wrongly tagged a youth prospect. The likes of Solly March and Brennan Dickinson would, injuries allowing, appear the most likely to make the bench.

I am happy with the performance. When you hit the woodwork three times and you have ten clear chances to score you cannot be angry, because we did everything to win this game. “We created more in the first half because Bournemouth tried to play a little bit higher, while in the second half they sat back and it was difficult for us to find spaces to play, but I always expected us to equalise. [Oscar on penalty] “Everybody in the stadium saw exactly what happened, except the most important person [the referee] and he gave the penalty. “We have had several disappointing decisions this season, but you have to learn to manage them.”

(Talking after draw with Bournemouth)

Brighton take a break from Championship football this weekend when Oscar Garcia’s side entertain Reading in the FA Cup third round – and Oscar Garcia could take the opportunity to tinker with his Seagulls side. Despite the Albion’s stuttering 1-1 draw at home with Bournemouth on Wednesday, the Seagulls sit seventh in a division which is proving as competitive as ever. And, with Oscar having rested key players like Andrew Crofts and Rohan Ince during the hectic Christmas period, it is likely the head coach will make changes to his starting line-up ahead of the clash with The Royals. Matthew Upson, who has not missed a minute of league football since arriving initially on loan last year, is perhaps the most likely to be given a game off – although much will depend on the fitness or otherwise of Gordon Greer and Oscar’s confidence in Lewis Dunk. Jake Forster-Caskey could find himself back in the match day squad while Kemy Agustien will be hopeful of a starting slot in the Albion’s midfield – with Liam Bridcutt or Andrew Crofts likely to make way. Oscar’s choice of centre forward will be interesting. Ashley Barnes

Albion Statistics:

Stephen Ward has quietly impressed since joining the Albion on loan earlier in the season to fill the left back slot vacated by Wayne Bridge. A key part of the Seagulls’ back four, Ward is a steadying influence on the team’s left flank. A goal and a man of the match award was his prize for another good display last time out and Ward remains one of the first names on Oscar Garcia’s team sheet each week. TACKLES*
