Labour and Conservative councillors were uniting last night in an effort to limit any council tax increase to 2% - or to freeze it altogether. A motion of no confidence at a meeting of Brighton and Hove City Council was designed to pressure Green councillors to quit their leadership roles and allow a “caretaker administration” to take over. Councillor Jason Kitcat, whose position as council leader - along with those of committee chairs - was threatened by the Labour motion, is certain to stick to his plans for a 4.75% tax rise to defend public services as much as possible. Warren Morgan, the Labour Group leader, will address party members tomorrow (Saturday) at a meeting of the 1,400-member Brighton and Hove Labour City

Party, which has yet to debate his public determination to limit a council tax increase to a level that does not require a referendum. The Green Party has welcomed supporters from across the country to help in its preparations for a possible “social care referendum”. More than 200 people have already registered to attend The Big Debate about the council budget on Monday, February 10 at Hilton Brighton Metropole (see page 21). Theatre group tells stories of growing up female

From the best advice your mother ever gave you, to the moment you first became aware of your gender, they want to hear your stories. Broken Leg Theatre, a Brightonbased theatre company, is conducting research for its latest production, Three Generations of Women. With funding from Arts Council England, the project will draw on the experiences of real women growing up in the United Kingdom over the last 100 years

The theatre company was established in 2008 by Anna Jefferson, 35, from Preston Park, Brighton; Emily James, 37, from Worthing; and Alice Trueman, 31, who has moved to London from Brighton. The website www. threegenerationsofwomen.co.uk - will play a central role in the research, enabling women to submit stories remotely. It is intended to be an expanding resource, which women can continue to contribute to,

creating an archive of real-life stories to be shared. Already, more than 550 stories have been submitted. The writers have been working with a wide range of partners, including Hollingdean and Preston Park Children’s Centre as well as New Writing South in Brighton. Anna Jefferson said: “In such a short space of time, we have already had an incredible response from women who have uploaded their stories onto our website. “From illegitimate children to powerful female role models, women are sharing very emotive, personal experiences. We hope the Three Generations project will continue to grow beyond the development of our play and come into its own as a lasting collection of stories and an ongoing online resource.” Alice Trueman said: “When we first started thinking about the

Former students are invited to share success with new college generation Frank Le Duc @BHcitynews

City College Brighton and Hove is asking former students to share experience and knowledge with their successors. The college has started a “City Alumni” group with the aim of inspiring the current generation, mentoring them, and possibly providing work-experience, jobs and apprenticeships. The college is working with Think Alumni, a specialist organisation, to maximise the potential of those links while highlighting success stories. Examples include Gresham Blake, the designer tailor; Ben McKellar, of The Gingerman Group; Clare Rogers, owenr of the Treatment Rooms proprietor; Darren Fell, founder of Crunch Accounting. Deborah Meaden, of the BBC’s Dragons’ Den, is also an alumna. The start of the alumni project was marked at a business breakfast attended by several former students and members of the local business community at the college’s Gallery restaurant. Mr Blake, who said that his time as an arts foundation student at the college changed his life, added: “I think it’s

He said: “I’m really happy to support this project because I appreciate what the college did for me during my apprenticeship and I’ll be working with them to find a new apprentice for my company this year.” Lynn Thackway, principal and chief excutive of City College, said: “At the City Alumni launch, I got a real sense of the level of goodwill there is towards the college in the local community, because we’ve helped so many young people on their path towards a successful career. “I’m really looking forward to this project making links with our alumni and bringing their knowledge, wisdom and expertise back into the College for the benefit of the next generation.” The college – or parts of it – have been known variously as Brighton Municipal College, Brighton Technical College and Brighton College of Technology.

40 years on: Memories about student protests, squatting, and street politics Tony Greenstein @TonyGreenstein

It was a sunny autumnal morning when I was dropped off on the A23 at Bolney on my first day of enrolment at Brighton Polytechnic. For three days, I stayed in Brighton Youth Hostel in Patcham, now long gone. Then I pitched my tent in front of the director’s office. I came from Liverpool, where poverty is all around you. Brighton Trades Council was stuffed then with manual workers, such as engineers. Today, Brighton and Hove is the male heroin death capital of Britain. Being a poor student, I went for veggie stew and the latest gossip to Bruno’s Open Café in Victoria Street. The café was our base as we occupied the Aquarius Hotel and Crest Hotel in Kemptown. A fellow squatter was to become Baron Bassam of Brighton, former Labour leader of Brighton council. The number of empty properties was staggering. When we occupied an empty office block, the property company offered us a deal: Move out and they would give us a licence to use and renovate the gutted 9 Lansdowne Place. We

agreed - and the Dudley Hotel opposite often sent for kitchen porters. The polytechnic’s head porter said that “his” students were a conservative lot who would never occupy. Well, he was wrong. And, in my second year, we were in occupation and I was elected vicepresident in 1978, with a majority of more than 300. Even then, Brighton was the radical centre of Sussex. Hove could be persuaded to join Brighton only by keeping low parking charges! Brighton was not then the country’s gay capital. Only in student unions could they organise openly. There were National Front attacks on a meeing of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality and on a meeting at Sussex University, in which people got hurt. There was a gaggle of anti-gay Tory councillors, led by Catherine Vale and Danny Sheldon. The proposal for a nudist beach was resisted by a Councillor Blackmun. Nudists were “perverts and voyeurs”. Brighton had a vigorous antifascist punk scene and we held regular concerts at the polytechnic. (“The Poly” was a forced merger of the College of Technology and the Art College in 1970, and the College of Education in 1975). Top of the bill were usually The Pirhanas and Misty in Roots. The Pirhanas were excellent; I still play my old copy of Vaultage 78. In 1987, 134 continuous years of Conservative rule ended in Brighton. Even Hove, which was bluer than Nick Clegg, went Labour. Pavilion’s MP Sir Julian “Gunboats”Amery had no surgeries. His duties were national not local. His conservative colleague in Kemptown, Andrew Bowden, was promoted by The Argus newspaper as the “pensioners’ champion” although he always backed down on a vote at the last moment. In 1997, he was defeated by charges of Tory sleaze.

Dennis Hobden. the only Labour MP for Kemptown (196470) suffered because he was a Freemason. But he was a good socialist; unfashionably I liked him a lot. In 1964, he won by just seven votes. Labour was a radical party until 1992, when - because of Lord Bassam - 50 of us were expelled or suspended. Sussex University - one of the “new” universities - had a radical reputation under the liberal Asa Briggs. It was a hive of activism and elected Richard Flint, an anarchist, as president. Tragically, he died young. We opposed and stopped the prelim examinations. Union meetings of more than a thousand were held on the grass. Flint was expelled. When the fight against apartheid began, Sussex’s largest hall was named the Mandela Hall. At the

polytechnic, we occupied over autonomy and overseas student fees. Which we saw then could lead to today’s full-cost fees. The number of students was tiny: 3,000 at the Poly and 4,000 at Sussex - compared with about 20,000 each today. There was barely a voluntary sector and the Brighton Rights and Advice Centre was always under fire from the council at Prince Albert Street. We formed in 1980 the Brighton Campaign Against Youth Unemployment and occupied an East Sussex building. More than 10,000 signatures and a “Right to Work” march locally, where ordinary people clapped us along the route, led to the council granting us a small unemployed centre in Coalbrook Road. Which no longer exists. Brighton was always fiercely

opposed to fascism from the days of Oswald Mosley. The Heidelburg Hotel in Lower Rock Gardens had an international Nazi guest list, but fascist leaders like John Tyndall preferred to campaign elsewhere. Anti-Nazi League monthly meetings at the Resource Centre in North Street, which was burned down, attracted up to 500 attendees. Having attacked gay and Irish meetings, we stopped the fascists in their tracks despite police hostility. Nothing changes! Opposition to the English Defence League (EDL) march in April every year is part of that tradition. City cashes in on Bank Holiday parking MAY

498 tickets Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy It was a scorching May Bank Holiday weekend. Day-trippers were expecting one of the hottest days of the year. Brighton and Hove was heaving. And the Civil Enforcement Officers - parking attendants, to you and me - were hard at work. It seems they notch up an average of about 341 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) – parking tickets - every day of the year. But sometimes they excel themselves. Indeed, on Bank Holiday Sunday last May, they managed a record 498 tickets. Even in a 12-hour day, that is a remarkable 42 tickets an hour - netting anything up to £3,000 an hour. The enforcement officers were hard at it again on Saturday,

The three other days on which the biggest number of tickets were issued were: Sunday, November 10 - 474 tickets; Sunday, April 14 - 473; and Saturday, October 12 - 471. In the whole of 2013, a total of 124,351 tickets were issued. This compares with the annual figure of 114,000 – the second-lowest since 2001 - given in Brighton and Hove City Council’s annual parking report for 2012-2013. The report listed the roads on which most PCNs were issued. The top five streets were: Madeira Drive - 2,597 tickets; Marine Parade - 1,512; First Avenue - 1,332; Lansdowne Place - 1,322; and Wilbury Road - 1,312. You have been warned.

Heartbreak Hotel by Deborah Moggach Oh hoorah and huzzah! A perfect book for this rather miserable time of the year. Moggach has done it again. As with her past hit of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, she has once more assembled a cast of characters that we can all fall in love with. Retired actor Buffy, who has a string of ex-wives and assorted children and stepchildren, is fading away in his beloved London. A few drinks in the Coach & Horses, a wander around Soho, and memories of the days when he had some great parts to play in rep. He is totally taken aback to discover that an old flame has recently died and bequeathed him her bed-andbreakfast in rural Wales.

What is a man to do? He bites the bullet and moves into what can be described only as sheer bliss. The village of Knockton is a complete delight. But the B&B is far more shabby than chic. And to improve the house and his new career he has a genius idea: a string of workshop weekends - “Courses for Divorces”, which include DIY, gardening, cooking and “How to Talk to Women”. Perfect. And a damn fine way to get his B&B, garden, car and kitchen requirements looked after. As well as finding a few drinking pals along the way. Of course, it does not always work out quite the way he had planned. And that is the joy of it. Buffy is the main character that we can adore. But there are many more in this glorious, feel-good book.

Auntie’s lack of balance in her reporting needs some correcting Graham Chainey

The recent admission that the BBC has, for years, been deliberately suppressing any debate about immigration will not come as a surprise to those who listen with any care to its news broadcasts. It is sometimes hard to credit that the corporation’s charter requires it to be balanced and non-partisan. Instead, its liberalleftist bias is often so pronounced that its slanting of stories makes it resemble an airwave sibling of The Guardian newspaper. Indeed, it has been said that Radio 4’s influential Today programme takes its lead from that morning’s Guardian, and I have seen a photograph of one of its presenters at the microphone with his copy of The Guardian spread before him. (And this is without their handing the programme over to daft guest editors such as singer PJ Harvey, whose contribution a few weeks ago was described as pure “left-wing tosh”.) With all BBC job vacancies being advertised solely in The Guardian, this cosy symbiosis tends to be self-perpetuating. Consider the BBC’s coverage of two major deaths last year. When Lady Thatcher died in April, they seemed to go out of their way to provide hostile soundbites from the likes of Gerry Adams, George Galloway, Ken Livingstone and embittered ex-miners - with few balancing opinions from her cabinet or from, say, the Falkland Islanders. BBC Radio 4’s account of her funeral was risibly skewed. Five minutes to describe the actual procession and ceremony, giving the impression the route was lined by egg-throwing jeerers, then almost as long to describe the burning of her effigy in a Yorkshire village – probably attended by three men and a dog. By contrast, Nelson Mandela’s death last month produced cancelled schedules, funereal

music, people sobbing live on air, and presenters speaking…very… slowly…and…portentously. You would have thought God had died. The right-on lachrymosity and mourning-by-diktat was so embarrassing I had to switch off. And I say this as someone who has Mandela’s picture on my wall and who was never a fan of Thatcher. Again, the BBC is noticeably pro-Palestine, anti-Israel. It tends to report any outbreak of hostilities from the Palestinian side with graphic descriptions of casualties and damage, with minimal balancing reportage from the Israeli side. I heard a newsreader state that the November 2012 outbreak was sparked by Israel’s killing of a Hamas military leader – whereas that incident was, in fact, a response to Hamas firing hundreds of rockets into Israel. (Again, I take no particular side in that conflict.) More recently, reporting Ariel Sharon’s death, an early Radio 4 bulletin went straight, as if by instinct, to a Palestinian spokesman declaring that Sharon was a war criminal, that people were dancing in the streets - again with no balancing report from elsewhere. (Later bulletins were more nuanced.) Mealy-mouthed and politically correct, the BBC has more than once refused to call murderous terrorists – in Mali, Mumbai, and Nairobi – by that name, preferring to dignify them as “activists” or

How, instead of first reporting a new government policy and then, later, giving the opposition’s response, they lead with the latter – “Ed Miliband says David Cameron’s new initiative won’t work ...” – just as The Guardian might do. If you ask yourself, as you watch or listen to a bulletin, why that particular story has been given prominence, or why it is being told in this particular way, or why they are quoting this person rather than another, you start to see the underlying pattern. It may be preferable for Auntie to be anti-establishment rather than a government mouthpiece, but I nevertheless believe its current entrenched culture denies the licence-payer the impartial service mandated by charter. ■ Editor’s note: BBC Written Archives offers the following about the origin of the word “Auntie” to describe the BBC: “A phrase of obscure origin: presumably journalistic, possibly from cartoons. A Greene monument at Brighton Station? I was very taken by Graham Chainey’s piece on Graham Greene (page 6, January 17) and I would support any plans to have a statue of the great writer. But where? I have in my possession a first edition (1946) of The Little Train, a little-known children’s story written by Greene, but published under the the name of Dorothy

Craigie - that name itself being a nom de plume for Dorothy Glover. The story is about a little train that wants to go to where the big trains are: Brighton! The book is dedicated to “To the guard of the twelve o’ clock to Brighton”. So why not have the statue in the forecourt of the station? Shaun Treaynor

We need good services not an i360 eyesore I agree absolutely with everything Clive Bonny says about the i360 tower (page 26, January 24). How our council can consider raising the original borrowing to finance this folly to £37 million is not only incomprehensible, and completely irresponsible. This council has delusions of grandeur - like the last Labour council, which wanted to foist the dreadful King

Alfred development on us. It is about time that all councillors realise that what residents want is a functioning city with good services and a pleasant environment, both of which can be achieved without building another eyesore on the seafront that could impact on taxpayers’ pockets for years to come. Sodastream boycott: A final contribution Neil Duncanson (page 10, January 17) in his response to my article (page 8, January 10) says that a boycott of Sodastream is not green. Neither is ethnic cleansing. Perhaps the boycott of slave-grown sugar and apartheid South Africa were “not green”? But the campaigns were certainly successful. Neil Duncanson admits that a Sodastream factory is based in Mishor Adumim on the West Bank. Thousands of Palestinians were evicted to make way for this industrial park. Perhaps that, too, was green? Those who justified South African apartheid also pointed to the employment they “created”. Mr Duncanson makes extravagant claims for conditions at the factory - but trade unions are outlawed and independent access has been refused. Sylvie Schapira (page 11, January 17) accuses me of providing no evidence. Perhaps the situation of the Christian village of Tel Rumedia will satisfy her. Situated next to two religious settlements in the Hebron area, the inhabitants are physically attacked, their crops burned, women have even been prevented from access to hospitals, and the

army stands by doing nothing to hinder the settlers and indeed arresting those who resist. Charles Wallach (page 11, January 17) misunderstands my point. Why should I - a British citizen - have the right to “return” to a country I have never lived in, when Palestinians who were born there are not able to do so? Likewise, Robert Glick (page 11, January17). It’s not that the Talmud I am condemning. The sections regarding non-Jews fell into disuse for a thousand years, But its provisions that non-Jews are not human and it is a sin to save a non-Jewish life on a Sabbath have been revived by Israeli rabbis and resulted in many deaths among injured Palestinians. I mentioned the Chief Rabbi of Safed, whose edict barred Arabs from renting apartments. When he was criticised, hundreds of rabbis backed up this son of a Chief Rabbi. Just one person objected, Eli Tzavieli, an 89-year-old Jew who survived a number of Nazi labour camps. He has been the subject of death threats as a result. This is the Israel of today. Why don’t we ask a firm of traffic consultants to sort it out and advise? That, of course, would be too easy, wouldn’t it? And the anti-car brigade might be given advice they do not want to hear.

DRY JANUARY So January is finally at an end and I think most of us would agree it has felt like a long month. In Sussex the rain has been pretty relentless and I for one have had enough of feeling slightly soggy on a daily basis. So when I heard about ‘Dry January’ I was intrigued. But of course ‘Dry January is nothing to do with the weather. It is a month long campaign run by the national charity Alcohol Concern. The idea is that you give up alcohol for the whole of January. As a campaign it has been fairly successful, but I have a problem with some of the messages and thinking it promotes. Not that cutting back or giving up alcohol can ever be a bad thing; as a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator I regularly help couples where alcohol plays a major part in what is

going wrong in their relationship. Obviously the goal of a “sober January” has been around for as long as we have been moaning about his in-laws at Christmas. And while a booze free period is a persuasive way of compensating for all that festive overindulgence, it’s actually a pretty bad idea, based mainly on guilt. Where there is a real problem with alcohol, just focusing on a “sober January” can be to avoid changing habits in the longer term. Surely if you are worried about the affects of your drinking, the answer is not to give up just for a month but to try and work out whether you have a problem and if so what are the bigger issues that are leading to drinking too much.

I help separating couples face deeper problems that need sorting out and believe that change is possible. If your relationship has been on the rocks for some time and you are using alcohol as a crutch to make it bearable the best thing for your health may actually be to give up for good. Choosing the collaborative legal process rather than the adversarial when you split up is a healthier option because it is built on openness and making change happen fairly. When we really face up to things it becomes clear that problems in our lives rarely come from eating or drinking excessively – they come from the way we feel about things. Giving up one bad habit for a month and hoping something magically changes inside us is never going to be the long term solution.

The Brighton Centre was one of eight new venues to become information points last October 2013, when the Royal Pavilion information centre closed. A cannabis farm was found when immigration officers raided a house in Brighton.The Home Office said officers were acting on intelligence when they raided the house in St James’s Street Mews. They conducted immigration checks and arrested a 33-year-old Algerian man who had overstayed his visa. Officers then searched the building and found about 70 cannabis plants in a bedroom.

A Brighton electro-pop and dance music festival has been given the go-ahead to move to a new location. This year’s Shakedown Festival is set to take place at Waterhall in Patcham on Saturday, July 19. Organisers of the festival were granted landlord’s consent to use Waterhall by Brighton and Hove City Council. The one-day event will run from noon to 11pm, with a capacity of 15,000.

Young people on the Brighton and Hove Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme hosted their own ceremony for the first time. The event, which took place at Hove Town Hall honoured 351 young people who had completed their Bronze or Silver awards. The highlight of the evening was a spectacular drumming performance by two students from Hamilton Lodge School and College for Deaf Children.

Public support for “fracking” is on the decline, despite promises of financial pay-outs to communities allowing shale-gas development, a survey has found. Support for the controversial technology, which involves pumping liquid at high pressure deep underground to fracture rock and release gas, has been waning since environmental protests in Balcombe last summer gained huge support.

A council-owned building in Preston Road, which is currently unused, is to be leased to a housing association to provide over 30 homes, of which 40% will be “affordable”. Southern Housing Group emerged as the recommended bidder in a competitive tendering process that attracted 13 bids. The housing association plans to convert the building to provide 24 flats and build seven new houses in the rear gardens.

A new off-road cycle path and bridleway through the South Downs National Park around Brighton was officially opened by Lord De Mauley, the environment and science minister. The 2.5km route adjacent to Falmer Road provides a safe off-road route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It links Woodingdean in Brighton with the village of Falmer in East Sussex as well as linking with the Amex Stadium, two universities and Falmer railway station.

BHASVIC win Brighton & Hove Sixth Form College BHASVIC has won planning permission for a large extension building to accommodate growing student numbers. The planning committee voted unanimously in favour. An initial application was refused last October after councillors objected to the building’s colour and design. New plans show the three-storey building clad in red-brown brick and panelling in earthier colours.

A pedestrian who was critically injured in a collision with a bus has died. Zhiying He, 18 - also known as Cecilia - was a student at the International Study Centre. She was living on the Sussex University campus in Falmer. The accident happened on Tuesday morning at about 8.35am on the A270 Lewes Road, by the corner of Ringmer Road. The Compass bus was travelling south in a bus lane. Police would like to speak to anyone who has any information or who saw the collision.

A retired Brighton vicar has been charged with abusing young men over a 16-year period. Vickery House, 68, the former vicar of St Bartholomew’s Church in Brighton, faces eight charges of indecent assault. Sussex Police said that the charges relate to “one boy then aged 15, and five men, ranging in age from 17 to 34, between 1970 and 1986 in East Sussex and Devon”.

Planning permission has been refused for modern windows in a historic conservation area. The double-glazed UPVC windows had already been fitted to the second-floor flat in Clifton Street, Brighton. The owner, Mr Randolph Morse of Cleve Terrace, Lewes, had applied for retrospective planning permission for the new windows. Permission was refused because Clifton Street lies within the West Hill Conservation Area.

Dr Lucas wore a “No More Page Three” t-shirt at a parliamentary debate on media sexism and to prime minister’s questions. Roadworks on the A23, which have caused a significant impact on traffic, are on schedule to be completed later this year as the project passes an important milestone. Traffic will be shifted from the southbound carriageway over to the newly-constructed northbound carriageway. Officials are confident the work will be completed by the end of 2014.

Steyning Parish Council plans to increase its precept by more than 18% to cover potential legal fees arising from a controversial skatepark development. It hopes the increase for the next financial year will also cover the costs of two judicial reviews in 2013, both of which they won. The parish council provides a contribution to the swimming pool, maintains and runs the toilets in the High Street, as well as the Steyning Centre.

Peter James, the crime novelist, was delighted to see his work performed on the stage of the Theatre Royal in his home city. Mr James attended the gala evening of The Perfect Murder, the adaption of his bestselling novel. He said: “I used to go to the theatre as a child and used to dream of seeing something I had written performed. It was a great moment seeing my work on stage.”

How do you see the future of energy generation and energy consumption in the UK? We campaign actively to promote cleaner, greener energy production. We believe in a future where energy is produced closer to where it is used, by smaller independent renewable suppliers, putting people at the heart of generation and consumption. As well as doing our bit for climate change, renewable energy has the potential to improve UK energy security. Currently, 70% of the fuel the UK uses to generate electricity comes from fossil fuels; nearly 60% of it comes from abroad; and almost all of it is generated by big power stations. From small rooftop solar arrays on individual homes to large wind farms, the more energy that we can produce ourselves using natural sources the less we have to import. The UK is blessed with abundant natural energy and Brighton is the perfect place to appreciate the power that the sun, wind and sea can provide us with.

Albion stars come out in support of FirmBalls

NSPCC highlights fundraising success by city businesses SiteVisibility, the digital marketing agency that is a founding member of the NSPCC Brighton Business Board, helped celebrate the fundraising success stories of 10 Sussexbased businesses at the charity’s annual “Business Spotlight” event. Member companies raised almost £20,000 for the NSPCC to help fund its child protection services in and around Brighton and Hove in 2012-2013; a revised donation target of £35,000 has been set for 2013-14. The NSPCC event at Donatello’s - compered by Jason Woodford, chief executive of SiteVisibility - saw the NSPCC, ChildLine Schools Service, and Child Protection outline how funds raised can help protect children in Sussex through NSPCC helplines, online help and videos, the NSPCC Schools Service, and training NSPCC volunteers. Many of the funds raised

have come from businesses who have signed up to the 1600 Club, signalling a commitment to raise a minimum of £1,600 to help support vulnerable children and young people in Brighton and across the United Kingdom; £1,600 enables the NSPCC to train one new ChildLine volunteer, or to answer 400 calls to ChildLine. As a member of the 1600 Club, SiteVisibility previously raised a total of £1,645 for the NSPCC via various forms of fundraising activities in 2012-13. This was recognised when the company was awarded a “Big Tick” for its corporate social responsibility activities by Business in the Community. As a finalist in the Santander Responsible Small Business of the Year Award, the Brighton-based agency joined FTSE100 companies on the awards short list. Mr Woodford said: “At SiteVisibility, we have deep links

within the local community and an interest in helping local people develop a rewarding career in digital marketing. This is evident through our work with Brightonbased charity, Extratime. I hope we’re able to inspire other Brighton-based businesses to join the NSPCC 1600 club and help us raise £35,000 to help local children.” Some other examples of how the money was raised through 1600 Club members include Lookers Mercedes Benz of Brighton, which was one of the first to take up the 1600 Club challenge and host an annual golf day, and have a sky-diver and Great South Runner in its ranks; Southern Water, an honorary member of the 1600 Club having promoted it since starting to support the NSPCC in 2007; and Plus+ Accounting which, via promotional initiatives linked to marketing, an auction and boot sale, exceeded its £1,600 target.

Brighton and Hove Albion players were met at the training ground by Sam Thomas and Hamed Ovaisi, directors of FirmBalls, the 5-a-side football league exclusively for businesses. Launched in Eastbourne in 2011 by Mr Ovaisi, a solicitor, FirmBalls has grown from one league to 10 across Sussex and beyond - from Hastings, Crawley, and Worthing, to as far as Manchester; three leagues are in Brighton and Hove. Director Sam Thomas who joined FirmBalls in June 2013, said: “It has been fantastic being involved in FirmBalls and helping the company expand over the last 8 months, combining two of my real passions, football and networking. “We have some big plans for 2014 launching in London and Dublin. Research into bus emissions aims at creating a cleaner environment Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company is working with Ricardo, the engineering and technology company, on an advanced research project - one of the first of its kind - to investigate emissions of a range of buses. The company, which operates a fleet of about 280 buses on services in the city and its surrounding area, is committed to contributing towards a cleaner environment, with all recent vehicles fitted with “exhaust-particulate” traps. With growing concern around the world about the potential health impacts of poor air quality, the need to establish the true emissions of industry and road vehicles in the urban environment is increasingly recognised. To address demand for more detailed information, the research project uses some of the latest portable emissions monitoring equipment provided by HORIBA, a specialist in the field.

A selection of buses are being temporarily fitted with advanced monitoring equipment, which also record “real life” operational vehicle fuel efficiency during normal day-to-day service. The vehicles being tested represent a cross-section of the Brighton and Hove fleet, from the oldest to the most modern. Like any regular passenger service, the buses will stop frequently, but - for practical reasons of

health and safety - passengers will not be permitted to travel on the test vehicles; the tests are not part of the regular timetable, to avoid inconveniencing the public. So that the absence of passengers does not influence the results, each bus under test will be weighted to replicate approximately a typical quarterfull passenger load. Estate agents support BHT containers The Brighton and Hove Estate Agent Association (BHEAA) has given £1,611 to Brighton Housing Trust (BHT) to pay for the initial set-up costs for a new garden area at the recentlybuilt Richardson Yard, a housing development of 36 converted shipping containers. The donation will also pay for Harvest, a local food-growing project, and provide a weekly course for the residents to learn how to grow their own food. Andy Winter, BHT’s chief executive, said: “We are very grateful to the BHEAA for their generous donation.” Ross Gilbert, director of QED, the developer that is BHT’s partner, said: “BHEAA’s generous donation will be used to further BHT’s Grow! initiative, a gardening project developed to encourage clients to grow their own fruit and veg.” James Epps, BHEAA president, said: “We are delighted to support this unique local housing project. Personally I was amazed how such a clever concept can create ideal starter homes. I hope that our donation helps the residents in their stay at Richmond Yard.”

The Good Pine is fine as Ryan but he’s somewhat hampered by the character’s lack of a distinct personality; consequently he keeps the twinkly wise-cracking elements of his established screen persona to a minimum, which feels like a wasted opportunity. That said, Costner is on great form as Harper and Keira Knightley makes the most of her underwritten role as Cathy, while Branagh is suitably chilling as Cherevin and doesn’t go too over the top with the Russian.

The Bad Perhaps it’s not surprising that the film has a thriller-by-numbers feel to it, since it was adapted from an existing script to fit the franchise reboot. However, the script can’t disguise the fact that Ryan is a fairly bland character, despite Pine’s best efforts. On top of that, the script is riddled with plot holes, the most egregious of which is the attempt on Ryan’s life as he

arrives in Moscow, which seems shoe-horned in following test screening complaints of not enough action and sits clumsily with what follows. Worth seeing? Despite its flaws, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is a watchable thriller that ticks all the necessary boxes thanks to pacey direction and likeable performances. Worth a watch.

The Coal Shed opened on Boyces Street in the summer of 2011 and has worked hard to ensure a solid reputation for impeccable service alongside expertly-cooked food - two things that stand out in an over-saturated market such as Brighton and Hove. Working from a menu that is predominantly meat-oriented, The Coal Shed prides itself on exceptional steaks as well as lunchtime offerings, such as gourmet sandwiches and an excellent express menu. With steak being the centrepiece, it is worth pointing out that each cut of Porterhouse, sirloin, ribeye, rump and the rest is sizzled on their in-house Josper oven essentially a modern version of an indoor barbecue. This allows

for a glorious smoky flavour and charcoal sensation to swelter through the meat. On my lunchtime visit, I decided to sway away from the norm and opted to order from their express menu. Served Monday to Friday, from noon to 4pm - and a pretheatre slot of 6pm to 7pm - this sharp and sophisticated mini menu plays host to The Coal Shed favourites, such as onglet steak with beef-dripping chips as well as seasonal dishes. Ordering was a quick, smooth process and my waitress was attentive and knowledgeable. Choosing the fishcakes with chilliand-basil mayo for a starter was a great move (£6.50). The plump, round, breaded mounds of potato inundated with hearty chunks of fish and a steak of chilli were delightful and incredibly filling. Drizzled across my slate plate was a smooth basiland-chilli-infused mayonnaise

that finished off the dish well. While sipping a glass of the robust and intense house red, an Italian Primitivo, my main course arrived. The steak-and-ale pie (£8.50) was served piping hot alongside a mountain of mashed potato and dark, bitter greens. Atop the pie was a light sesame-seed-sprinkled puff pastry that crunched and crumbled upon entry, leaving way to a rich, dark and meaty sauce underneath. Chunks of tender steak swam in the indulgent and luscious pie gravy and I found hooking them onto my fork, alongside a pile of smooth mash and greens, allowed for a great balance of traditional, hearty British flavours, perfect for these chillier months. The portion sizes on the express menu were so generous and filling, there was no room for dessert. If, however, your waistline

is more expansive than mine, feel free to order from the a la carte menu to finish your meal. Highlights include a lime and basil parfait with mandarin jelly and Caribbean-influenced coconut and rum panna cotta. The Coal Shed has the hallmarks of being one of Brighton and Hove’s best restaurants. It is thought that these delicately-skinned grapes can trace their heritage back to . two interesting parents: the first is the Gouais Blanc, which originated in Croatia and was brought to the rest of Europe by the Romans; the second is a hybrid of an ancient wild vine no longer in existence. Riesling got a rather bad reputation due to its inclusion in 1970s favourites like Blue Nun and other overly-sweet wines. But it has recently become a restaurant regular, especially in continental Europe. A very versatile grape, when grown correctly, it produces some beautifullydry and crisp whites. Most famously grown in the Alsace region of France, where the wines are fresh and crisp, it does not play well with others and is rarely blended with other varieties. Sweeter Rieslings are a great accompaniment to the heat and spices of oriental and Indian food - while fresher European Rieslings are perfect with fish and white meat. They stand up well even to hard-topair ingredients, such as asparagus and artichoke.

Motoring Skoda release details of the new Octavia 2.0 TDI Elegance Estate Skoda Octavia TDI Elegance Estate Price: £23,365 Engine: 148bhp Performance: 8.7sec 0-62mph, 132mph, 62.8mpg In the blue corner is the UK’s favourite new Skoda Octavia: the 1.6-litre TDI hatchback with a manual gearbox. In the red corner, meet the Octavia your fleet manager (and the missus) would rather you didn’t have. Why wouldn’t they want us to have this Skoda Octavia? For a start, it’s faster. It trumps the limp-wristed 1.6-litre’s 103bhp by some margin, with the 2.0-litre oiler developing 148bhp and 236lb ft. This makes it the most powerful Octavia this side of the range-topping vRS, and good for 0-62mph in a brisk-feeling 8.7sec, and 132mph flat out. Making the most of the engine’s oodles of low-rev torque is the next best thing about this car: the six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Yes, it’s a pricey treat: it bumps the price up by £1250, to £24,365, but the DSG is much happier here than in the automatic Yeti crossover – you get obedient, superfast shifts in manual mode, actuated by cheap plastic paddles incongruously affixed to the steering wheel. You can save £200 by not optioning the paddleshiftequipped helm, by the way. Is this the drivetrain to save up for? There are only two flies in this ointment. Left to its own devices, the DSG is largely a triumph – as

we’ve become accustomed to in the VW Group mainstream. Watch out for a couple of flaws, though. First off, the ‘Driving Mode Selection’ party trick spoils even more of the Octavia than it does in the manual car. In addition to gloopy steering feedback, Sport mode alters the shift calibration to hold onto gears for much too long. So long, in fact, you’ll rev right out of the peak torque band and expose the TDI’s rough top end. Meanwhile, Eco mode’s desperate attempts to dissuade fuel consumption almost ban kick-down altogether. The other caveat is more the driver’s problem. Initially, you’ll stab the throttle to wake the turbo, which easily panics the transmission when you’re mooching along at town speeds, pinning the revs sky-high. Ease the right pedal gently and progress is far more dignified. It’s a little refreshing to drive such an outwardly mundane machine but find it rewards delicate driving inputs and punishes heavyhanded (or heavy-footed) ones.

Does Octavia Estate beat Octavia hatchback? This is no shooting brake wannabe – it’s boxy in a way modern Volvos have moved well away from, and offers up to 1740 litres of bootspace. The Octavia estate measures 90mm longer and 45mm wider than its predecessor. If only the styling was more confident, this could be quite imposing machine. Instead, it has the presence of a soap opera extra. Verdict These VW Group MQB-platform cars are fast becoming the Sebastian Vettel of the mainstream hatchback world. Not exciting, but pretty damn effective. The Octavia, like the Audi A3, Seat Leon and VW Golf, is competent, efficient, and goes about its business in an unspectacular, tidy fashion. Skoda’s Octavia Estate is another fine family car from the Czech maker, and if you can stretch to the charms of the 2.0-litre diesel, its slick DSG, and the extra usability of this wagon model, you won’t be disappointed.

As we move into February, our New Year’s resolutions about exercise and dieting begin to become slightly neglected. To try and keep you all motivated - and eager to maintain rather than break your resolutions - here are some pearls of wisdom from an osteopathic perspective. I have recently seen a dedicated weightlifter for an osteopathic treatment, who came to my attention as a Pilates client with BeauPilates. He was in exceedingly good shape, in some aspects - and, in others, such as flexibility, suppleness and joint mobility, he was in need of some attention. It is common knowledge that our cardiovascular, respiratory and muscular systems benefit hugely from regular exercise. The effects on bone and joint health, however, are discussed less and somewhat overlooked. Both cardiovascular and weight-training exercise play an important role in maintaining a high level bone and joint condition. Cardiovascular exercise increases heart rate and is excellent for heightening blood circulation to all of the body’s tissues, including your bones and joints - which receive only 10 to 20% of your cardiac output. Increased circulation to any body tissue optimises its

health by means of delivering fresh oxygen and removing carbon dioxide and other waste products in an efficient manner. With the increase in respiration, this process of nourishment and waste removal is enhanced. When it comes to weighttraining, you may be aware that your muscles attach to surrounding bones at the tendons. When increasing the function and load of a muscle, the attached tendons have a habit of pulling on the bone they insert at and, as a result, a bone formation response is triggered. This creates a stronger muscle attachment site, ultimately resulting in stronger bone and increased bone mineral density. Therefore, a good combination of cardiovascular and weight-training exercises is key for optimal bone and joint health as your bone mineral density increases, resulting in a reduced risk of osteoporosis and bone fracture. Now you are more clued up on the benefits of exercise on your skeletal system, do not give up on your New Year exercise routine. The Albion head to Watford on Sunday knowing a Reading win at Millwall tomorrow (Saturday) could see them kick-off seven points adrift of sixth place and a play-off berth. Oscar Garcia’s squad currently sit eighth – four points behind Reading but with a game in hand after dumping Nigel Adkins’ team out of the FA Cup in the third round and therefore allowing the Berkshire team to clock up an extra league game while the Albion were dispatching Port Vale in round four. However, with the Seagulls not in action until Sunday, that gap could be widened by a win for The Royals – something which would add pressure to a Seagulls team trying desperately to keep pace with the division’s frontrunners.
