Albion and their £14.7 million loss Football clubs fighting it out for promotion to the Premier League are estimated to have lost around £250 million chasing the dream. Brighton and Hove Albion recently revealed an annual loss of £14.7 million for the year up to June 30 – covering a season which saw the Seagulls get to within a whisker of a Play-Off final and potential promotion. Figures show the club spent 101.5 per cent of its total income on player and wage costs – shelling out £280,000 on wages per league point during the 2012/13 campaign. However, a quick look around the league shows The Amex outfit were far from alone in spending more than they earn. In fact, of all 24 teams competing in last season’s Championship, just three broke even in their latest set of accounts. Of them, Crystal Palace only showed a profit due to the multi-million pound sale of Wilfried Zaha to Manchester

United. Had they not cashed in on their top asset, the Selhurst Park club would have been £12.3 million in the red. The true extent of Championship losses is not yet known as a host of teams have yet to publish their updated accounts. But looking at the most recent results, Brighton sit seventh in the loss league – a long way behind table-topping Bolton and their £50 million deficit. In fact, the six teams who have admitted higher losses than the Albion drastically eclipsed the Seagulls. Even the side immediately above them lost £13 million more than Tony Bloom’s men. And there were definite positive signs for the Seagulls. Turnover increased from £22.1 million to £23.3 million – with a boost to ticketing, commercial and retail income which rose to £14.3 million from £13.8million. However, revenue from Football League dropped from £5.7 million to £4.8 million due to a new reduced deal for TV rights and the club increased its playing budget by 41 per cent from £14.8 million to £20.9 million. Nevertheless, the Albion hierarchy is confident it can meet the £8 million loss limit now imposed on clubs at this level under Financial Fair Play (FFP)by the time it submits its next accounts. A string of expenses which will not be repeated annually feature in these accounts and a stack of record commercial and sponsorship deals will be reflected next year. The club’s cup run this season has also been worth around £700,000 to the Albion – a figure which could pass £1 million if

the Seagulls can beat Hull City in Monday night’s replay. And the sales of Liam Bridcutt, Ashley Barnes and Adam El Abd have already added an estimated £4 million plus to the club’s coffers. Kieran Maguire, a finance specialist at the University of Liverpool, said Brighton were in good hands to address the eyewatering figures – highlighting the estimated £200 million

investment from chairman Tony Bloom and the expertise of chief executive Paul Barber. He told Brighton & Hove Independent: “£14.7 million annual losses are frightening, but also further evidence that Tony Bloom gave Gus Poyet the resources to challenge for the Play Offs last season. “However, as 2012/13 was

A year after failing to replace Councillor Kitcat, some members want to change the rules to stop the council leader winning a third term as leader – or convenor – of the Green group. Councillor Alex Phillips and Councillor Mike Jones have been reported to be backing the move which was described by one senior party figure as “extremely destructive and not good for the city”. Opposition parties called it yet more proof that the Greens, who as a party are not whipped, were too divided to run the council. Green Party insiders dismissed the coup as a

“rearguard action” from a small group of disgruntled individuals adding that it was “unlikely” that the motion would get the required support required. Since 2010, the convenor of the Green group has been chosen through an electoral college with half the votes coming from serving councillors and the rest from party members. Last year, a group of Green councillors, who labelled themselves the “watermelons” to underline their commitment to socialism, wanted a change of leadership. But they were unable to convince the then deputy council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty to stand against Councillor Kitcat in the party’s annual elections. They

Brighton travellers site plan to be reviewed by minister Frank le Duc @BHcitynews

A cabinet minister has called in the plans for a permanent travellers site in Brighton. Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles will review the decision to approve the plans for the Horsdean site. The scheme was approved by the South Downs National Park Authority Planning Committee on Thursday, February 13. The proposal was submitted by Brighton and Hove City Council’s Green administration, with support from the Labour Group. It allows for a 12-pitch extension to the current transit site, making a total of 33 pitches, housing up to 150 travellers and all their vehicles at any one time. The proposed site is in the South Downs National Park. The announcement that the planning permission would be reviewed was welcomed by Patcham Conservatives. Councillor Geoffrey Theobald spoke against the application at last week’s national park authority planning meeting. Councillor Theobald argued that the proposed new site would contravene national planning guidance issued just last month that traveller sites should be built in areas such as Horsdean only in exceptional circumstances. Two local experts in hydrology – one a former managing director of Southern Water – also spoke against the application. They raised serious concerns about the effects a new site would have on both the quality of the drinking water in the aquifer and extraction adit that sits directly below Horsdean and also on the amount of waste water carried from the site through the already overrun sewerage system that

serves Patcham. Councillor Theobald said: “I am very pleased that the Secretary of State has listened to the people of Patcham and beyond and decided that these ill-thought through plans need further consideration. “I campaigned long and hard for the national park to be established in order to protect the South Downs from inappropriate development. “I feel that last week’s decision by their Planning Committee was a betrayal of all that I, and many others, fought for. “If this is going to be allowed then what is to stop other downland sites being developed for conventional housing, particularly with the planning inspector recently telling the city council that their housing target is far too low?” Fellow Patcham ward councillor, Carol Theobald, added: “Given the regular flooding we see at Patcham, it would be absolute madness to tag another large settlement on to a sewerage system that is clearly struggling to cope with the current levels of water entering it. “The Horsdean site itself is also prone to flooding and concreting over large parts of it will further exacerbate ground water run-off. “We don’t feel that these concerns, and the concerns our experts have about pollution of the water supply which serves the whole of Brighton and Hove, have been taken seriously by the SDNPA committee. “Horsdean simply isn’t a viable location for such a large traveller camp.” Conservative candidate for Patcham ward Karen Miles said: “I always thought the A27 bypass was supposed to act as a corset around the city beyond which no further significant development would take place. “Therefore, I very much hope,

Second complaint upheld against anti-20mph group A decision was made this week to uphold all 11 objections, made by 15 complainants, against the advert placed by Unchain the Brighton Motorist (UBM) in The Sussex Argus newspaper in September last year. The Advertising Standard Authority (ASA) found that there was not enough evidence to substantiate the many claims made by UBM in the advert. It was therefore misleading and breached advertising standards. Brighton & Hove Friends of the Earth (BHFOE), one of the complainants, welcomed the

decision. Chris Todd, planning and transport campaigner for BHFOE said: “We’re very pleased that the many objections to the advert were upheld. It shows we were right in our criticism of UBM’s many wild and exaggerated claims about 20 mph. “It’s just unfortunate that this process has taken so long. This advert has already misled the public and influenced the response to a public consultation. Getting the ruling now is a little like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.”

I found myself spending three days in the accident and emergency unit of the Royal Sussex County Hospital. The treatment from medical staff was second to none, but what I was seeing is privatisation by stealth. Unlike in the United States, you do not first have to produce your credit card before being admitted. How long is that going to last? It is proposed that “immigrants” who pay taxes will be charged. Once you accept scapegoating, the principle has been conceded. The Conservative-led government introduced further “reforms” into the NHS - the intention of which was to increase “competition”. It was Tony Blair who first introduced “choice” with scandals such as Stafford the result. “Savings” and privatisation kills people. The Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust recently appointed a new chief executive, Matthew Kershaw at a wage of £180,000 - who in Lewisham, with Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, suffered a legal defeat when appeal court judges ruled he had acted illegally in cutting A&E and maternity services at Lewisham Hospital in southeast London. More than 25,000 took part in the campaign. A hospital is nothing without its cleaners, kitchen staff and porters. They were transferred from the NHS to Sodexo last year and have been told that their legal rights to the same terms and conditions are void. Sodexo have consistently failed to pay staff the right amounts and on time. The porters who take patients for scans and so on are losing on average £20 a week. Privatisation of cleaning led directly to MRSA as cleaners took short cuts. Sodexo food is appalling and not fit for your pet. Yet nutrition is essential for

recovery. Equipment is always out of action. Sodexo is a French multinational with £12 billion revenue in 2010. With an annual budget of £109 billion (in 2012-2013), the NHS represents a massive “cash-cow”. Since the Health and Social Care Act became law, more than £11 billion of services have been transferred to the private sector. Well over 100 private companies are involved, many with no prior experience. All the scandals regarding care of the elderly will inevitably be repeated. A leaked government document referred to £20 billion of services up for grabs. I received a “Patient Viewpoint” questionnaire; so I asked a few questions of my own. Sodexo staff did not want to talk. They had been personally written to and told to keep quiet. When I promised anonymity, however, they poured their hearts out: wages not paid on time and too low; cheating on overtime pay; broken equipment. The list was endless. Sodexo’s first act was to try to make 90 staff redundant. That failed. Ambulance workers are next. Hundreds of staff in Brighton and Hove have already lost their jobs or had their contracts changed. Despite the denials of Mr Kershaw, a plan for out-sourcing hospital security and reception is being drafted. The outpatients’ pharmacy is to be formed into a separately registered company. Sexual health (Claud Nicol Centre) is going out to tender. This service works closely with the HIV Aids service. There are serious fears for the future of this service if sexual health is hived off. All the major political parties - even, it would seem, Brighton’s Green Party - see privatisation as beneficial when the evidence is the opposite. A private company will inevitably see making a profit as a priority - by cutting the pay of staff. Tourism boost for Brighton and Hove The number of overnight visitors to Brighton and Hove rose 5 per cent in the most recent year for which figures are available. And the same research estimated that the value of tourism for the Brighton and Hove economy rose 4.3 per cent to £753 million. The figures come from a research study called the Economic Impact of Tourism Brighton and Hove 2012 by Tourism South East. It said that total visitor numbers stood at about 8.5 million, unchanged on 2011, overnight stays rose 5 per cent to 1.4 million. The total number of visitor nights spent in the city rose by 7.5 per cent to 4.8 million. The tourism sector employed more than 19,000 people or the equivalent of 14,600 full-time staff. Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, the chairman of the Brighton and Hove City Council Economic Development and Culture Committee, said: “I’ve no doubt it’s been a difficult time for families and businesses but these figures show we have remained very successful at bringing people to the city. “It’s testament to the quality of our tourism offer that visitors

spent more money here in 2012 than they did the year before when the nation was generally tightening its belt. It’s likely that the Olympics helped. “We’ll still be striving to make the place yet more attractive to visitors. “The arches being built on the seafront will really smarten the area near the West Pier, bringing new cafés and shops. “And we’re working with organisers to stage another fantastic season of large events to draw the crowds.” Glynn Jones, the chairman of Brighton and Hove’s newly formed Tourism Advisory Board, said: “It is vitally important that the city, in partnership with business, finds ways of investing in the seafront and also addresses the ever-changing demands of our visitors by improving and extending the range of world class and state-of-the-art attractions that we can offer.” Mr Jones, chairman of the West Pier Trust and a former chief executive of the council, added: “If we fail to do this, existing visitors and, importantly, those thinking of visiting us for the first time will go elsewhere where the offer is better.”

Care of Wooden Floors by Will Wiles Good grief. Is there anything more stressful than looking after other people’s homes? If anyone has ever done a spot of house-sitting, I beg you to read this book. It seems easy enough: Oskar has entrusted his minimal arty flat to an old university friend while he goes to rescue his marriage to Laura, an art dealer in California. The flat and the two cats named after Russian composers - are in an unnamed eastern European city. The apartment is beautiful, perfect and uncluttered - with a very large expanse of the most pristine, gleaming and expensive wooden floor. Oh dear! This book is about how a tiny oversight can set off a trail of

farcical, disastrous and even fatal chain of events. It is also a very accurate essay in friendship. How well do we know the people that we count as friends? Just because we were close with them once at work, or university, does the friendship last any longer than that? Oskar leaves a trail of incredibly-detailed and damning notes secreted around his apartment for his friend to find, with devastating effects. I suffered high anxiety while reading this book and terrible moments of explosive laughter followed by eye-widening horror. The spiralling set of disasters keeps you turning pages and willing our hero on long after a decent time to go to sleep. You will never leave your dishwasher door open again. Just saying.

Green leader attacks Labour’s ‘misleading’ figures Ed Balls and Hilary Benn have confirmed that the Labour Party is committed to Tory austerity plans into the next parliament, including more huge cuts to council budgets. So, instead of dwelling on that depressing position, local Labour councillors are desperately trying to distract residents from these awkward truths. For example, I was disappointed to read some of the misleading claims in Councillor Warren Morgan’s piece (page 23, February 7) opposing our proposal for a social care referendum on a 4.75% council tax rise. Firstly, he falsely claims the rise will cost £6 a month - when for the clear majority of households (Bands A to C) it will be £4.53 a

month or less, with those in Band A paying £3.40 a month. Indeed, your paper clearly showed this with the chart on a previous page of the same edition. The other common comparison is using Band D, those households would pay £5.09 extra a month compared to last year’s bills. Cllr Morgan has these figures, but chooses to ignore them and mislead. We recognise times are tough and that these can be significant extra sums to pay for households, but to protect essential care services we think now is the time to let the people decide on whether they wish to pay that bit extra, or not. Next Cllr Morgan falsely claims

Indeed, the council’s management numbers and costs are at their lowest in well over a decade. 3 Public reports have shown our huge procurement savings in a wide range of areas from stationery to software to vehicle purchasing. 4 Finally, lots of council services from human resources to school transport have gone through service reviews and redesigns, saving very large sums in the process. Most blatant of all was Cllr Morgan claiming the Toryproposed tax freeze was a “contrick”. Astonishing, as that is exactly what I said in 2012 - only for Cllr Morgan’s Labour Group to vote

with Tories for a tax freeze. This move alone meant we have £4m less in our budget this year, and millions less in previous years. Without that freeze then, we may well have not needed to propose the 4.75% increase now. Odd that Labour did not think a freeze was a con-trick two years ago, but now they do. Of course, Cllr Morgan is free to disagree with our carefullyconsidered position to protect social care services. But I think he would do the debate and citizens a great service by sticking to the facts while he does so.

The question is: What exactly is the Labour Party for these days? I would like to respond to Davis Lepper’s mean-spirited, inaccurate and ultimately self-defeating letter (page 11, February 14). Quite apart from his repetition of the mythical cost of the proposed referendum, shown to be inaccurate by the accompanying editorial, he offered us his opinion of the Green Party administration as “intensely disliked” by “so many people in so many parts of the city”. Well, maybe Mr Lepper should talk to some people outside of his Labour Party activist grouping. I can assure him that most people I talk to have larger questions in their minds. For example: “What exactly is the Labour Party for these days? Does it stand for anything other than the promulgation of Tory-lite policies? And, if it gets into power, will it actually behave anything like a Labour Party?” Mr Lepper could refer to the excellent letter below his, from Neil Harding, which - while taking

Mike Holland has got it wrong on flooding

Mike Holland’s flailing contributions to your paper are rarely accurate. His Valentine’s Day effort (page 14, February 14), however, was particularly illinformed. With respect to the hardworking chair of the Environment Agency, Mr Holland in his cheap attack omits to mention support for Lord Chris Smith (ex-Labour minister) from both the current and previous environment ministers (both Tory). On funds for dredging, Mr Holland does not mention - or maybe does not know - that new Treasury rules on flood work require £8 of benefit for every £1 of cost. So, under this government, a full dredge of the Somerset Levels just did not add up. Then, Mr Holland is bizarrely offended by Lord Smith’s quite reasonable comment that houses in flood plains may be more prone to flooding. Offensive is the only way to describe the subsequent comment that those affected by floods in Bangladesh are not worse off than flood-affected communities in the

If it was not so sad for the thousands of people across the country affected by the floods, it would be humorous to watch the antics of those supposedly in charge of flood prevention. I have watched - and listened to - the pathetic excuses of somebody called Lord Smith, who is apparently in charge of the Environment Agency. Let’s stop pretending and get on with tidying up our seafront Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland

Well the dear old West Pier is looking even sadder than usual following the violent storms we have experienced over the past few weeks. Of course we all know that none of what’s left can be saved anyway, but left as it is, it is a solitary reminder of what was and what could have so easily been. Over the past few weeks we have heard the usual claptrap from the higher beings presiding over the West Pier Trust (WPT). Their top brass have been holding forth advising everyone who will listen that the i360 is the only show in town, and letting us know how lucky we all are that Marks Barfield have graced us with their presence. The sad fact is that they are probably correct

Brighton we ought to be ashamed of ourselves. Let’s spend a bit of that available funding on proper facilities which are accessible to all. Whilst we are on the subject of pathetic structures, the seafront shelters are in such an abysmal condition - that along with the majority of the fixed seafront benches - they are little more than fit for scrap along with what’s left of the West Pier. It doesn’t really matter now whether we have a structure of any kind where the West Pier used to stand. Opinion is so divided between those who are vehement about either wanting a pier or a viewing platform that we forget there is a third option.

That option which I suspect is supported by the vast majority is pretty simple, and only involves tidying up the seafront to stop it resembling a war zone. The West Pier was great as was the Ice Rink in West Street, the Hippodrome and the Regent Ballroom. However, none of them are coming back, times change and we need to move on. We can always console ourselves that the people who purchased our Palace Pier run it efficiently, albeit they have had the audacity to change the name. Thank goodness the WPT never got their hands on that to save or we might have been looking at two rusting hulks.

A Week in the City History

Marriage for all The first same sex marriage ceremony in Brighton and Hove will take place just after midnight on Saturday, March 29 as soon as the law allows. The ceremony will mark a first in the city and is also of the first same sex marriages anywhere in the country. Shoreham Regeneration Youth hostel given planning permission Residents and businesses in Brighton and Hove are being invited to give their views on a new action plan for Shoreham Harbour. The draft plan, which sets out proposals for the area’s regeneration over the next 15 years includes: 1,450 homes, new employment space, upgraded flood defences, improvements to transport infrastructure, public spaces, community and leisure facilities, and for the conservation of environmental and historic features.

The Youth Hostel Association (YHA) has been given planning permission to turn a hotel near Brighton seafront into a youth hostel. Royal York Buildings, in Old Steine, Brighton, was turned into a hotel six years ago having previously housed offices, including the Brighton Register Office.

UKIP shouted down Two UK Independence Party candidates faced dozens of chanting protesters at a public meeting held in Portslade. Janice Atkinson and Ray Finch are second and fourth on the list of ten UKIP candidates for the South East England constituency at the European Parliament elections in May. About 40 to 50 people gathered outside, led by and antifascist group, and leaflets were handed out headlined: “Oppose racist politics.”

‘Amateurish terrorists’

A Brighton Science Festival event has been held to explore how developments in science are helping to identify the remains of missing First World War soldiers. The Café Scientifique talk explained how archaeology, science and anthropology are being used to put a name to some of the WWI dead using the kind of forensic techniques often seen in TV programmes such as CSI and Silent Witness. A bike hub has opened in the disused fruit and veg market in Circus Street, Brighton. The hub offers to help people fix, maintain and get their bikes back on the road for free. It has been set up by the Brighton charity Groundwork South and volunteers have already collected more than 35 abandoned bicycles from Brighton Station this week. They will be refurbished and brought back into use.

Letter bombs sent to the Army careers office in Brighton and six other areas were the work of “amateurish terrorists”, according to a national newspaper. Shops and offices in and around Queen’s Road, Brighton, were evacuated and a number of roads were closed after the letter bomb was received. Anti-terrorism officers from the Metropolitan Police are working with police officers from Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic to identify the senders.

New store opens

Conservation work on one of the longest green walls in the country has begun this week on Brighton seafront to protect a huge variety of coastal plants and repair the 200-year-old concrete wall. Over 90 different species are growing on the Madeira Drive retaining wall and at up to 20 metres high and 1.2 kilometres long Brighton’s green wall is one of the oldest and longest in the country.

Fifty year-old residents are being offered cheap or free library loans of audio-visual material to celebrate the half-centenary of Moulsecoomb Library, Brighton. The library will be 50 years old on Thursday, March 13. The offer is open to anyone who is currently 50, or to anyone once they become 50 – as long as it happens in 2014. Applicants are asked to come to the library to collect their free subscription card with the appropriate I.D.

After much anticipation, TK Maxx opened their new Hove store yesterday (Thursday). The new store, located at the Goldstone Retail Park on Old Shoreham Road, welcomed masses of shoppers - with the first 500 receiving a £10 in-store voucher. Store manager Marie Clout said: “We are very excited to be opening up the new store and we look forward to bringing big savings on brands to Hove shoppers.”

Marine life Scientists at Brighton University are leading a £2 million study of marine life. Their aim is to develop new ways to fight infections, regenerate damaged skin and combat pollution. The research will identify, isolate and collect marine bio-molecules that could bring medical benefits in the future. They will showcase their research at a free public event at the Sea Life Centre on Thursday, February 27.

Sun shines on 7,000 runners in 24th Brighton Half Marathon After days of strong winds and heavy rain, the sun shone on the Brighton Half-marathon on Sunday. Nearly 7,000 runners experienced perfect running conditions, with clear blue skies, a light breeze, and temperatures of about 9 °C. Organised by The Sussex Beacon, the local HIV charity, the race winner was Paul Martelletti; the fastest woman was Sarah Hill. Paul Martelletti (Victoria Park Harriers/Run-fast) took the lead from the start and successfully defended his 2013 title by finishing in a time of one hour, five minutes and 52 seconds - more than a minute ahead of runner-up Tom Aldred, of London Heathside, and more than a minute-and-a-half faster than his winning time last year. In a sprint finish, Paolo Natali, of ATL Firenze Marathon, beat Kevin Rojas of Brighton & Hove AC, to secure third place in a time of one hour, eight minutes, and eight seconds. Sarah Hill, of Farnham Runners, dominated the women’s field and secured her win in a time of one hour, 18 minutes, and 43 seconds - ahead of Deidre McDermot, who crossed the finish line in one hour, 20 minutes, and 15 seconds. Business Former council offices on market for £4.5m – with permission for 40 flats Frank le Duc @BHcitynews An office building vacated by Brighton and Hove City Council is for sale for £4.5 million, with planning permission to turn it into 40 flats. Priory House, at the corner of Bartholomew Square and Little East Street, Brighton, is part of the same building as the Thistle Hotel and is linked to Brighton Town Hall. Baron Estates is marketing the six-storey building on a long commercial lease. It has 121 years remaining of the original 149 years. It was built in 1987 with green cladding on a reinforced concrete frame and has been empty for just over two years, since October 2011. The city council granted planning permission for a change of use from offices to homes in December. The planning permission does

not allow the 13 parking spaces that come with the property to be given to future residents. Instead there are planned to be 54 cycle parking spaces. The six floors have a total area of just over 25,000 square feet.

Google factors social sharing into their rankings system - and with its products merging - this is one social channel to start getting to know. The industry has been predicting mobile internet traffic to overtake desktop traffic for some years, but 2014 seems like it’s finally going to be the year where this is going to happen. If your website isn’t responsive (designed to fit on any device) then now’s the time to start thinking about it. With so many analytical tools available for free (Google Analytics being the first stop for any budding digital marketer), my biggest piece of advice for 2014 is to monitor and evaluate all of your online efforts.

The Bad The film’s main problem is its uneven tone - it’s not funny enough to succeed as a comedy (one of the more painful running

The Magic of Showcase Entertainment Over forty exceptionally talented songwriters, bands, comedians, solo artists and recording artists will be taking part in the first AHPR Entertainment Showcase evening for 2014. The event at Rendezvous Casino, Brighton Marina Village on Thursday, February 27 will start at 7pm for over 4 hours of live music. With 15 acts performing throughout the evening, there is certainly something for everyone! Bands from different genres include soul, disco, rock, swing and even Irish, plus magicians, comedians, solo singers and musicians taking to the stage to showcase what they can do. All of the acts performing come from the AHPR Entertainment stable, based in Hove, who specialise in providing live entertainment for private and corporate events, including weddings, parties and company launch events. The showcase event will create a stylish blend of fiery rock, blues, soul, R&B, reggae, raw funk and draw from an incredible background of musical talent as well as comedians and great magic. The event is open to the general public and entrance

is free with free parking too at the Rendezvous. There will be food served from the Bistro Menu for people coming straight from work and require something to eat. The organisers are inviting venue managers and event organisers to attend and hoping for some very honest feedback. Joe’s Café was taken over by Dan and Jane Cook, a husband-andwife duo with not only a lifelong passion for high-quality food, but also a burning ambition to run a local, community-based café. Just over 12 weeks ago, their dream became a reality and Joe’s Café opened its doors for the first time. With a menu that focuses on crowd-pleasing breakfasts and lunches, the magnificent highlight

of Joe’s Café is the quality of the food on offer. Advised by breakfast king Iain Chambers, of Seven Bees Café fame, Dan and Jane have sourced some of the finest breakfast ingredients that Sussex has to offer. Expect sausages, black pudding and bacon from Okham Farm, freerange eggs from Holmansbridge Farm, bread from Real Patisserie, and Wobblegate juices from Bolney, West Sussex, - to name but a few of the traceable places that supply Joe’s Café. Using these local ingredients, Dan and Jane serve up a terrific menu of fry-ups, hashes and sandwiches all at low, competitive prices. I ordered the “Joe’s Bigger Breakfast”, which came with sausage, bacon, toast, tomato, beans, fried egg, fried potatoes, mushrooms and black pudding all for the small sum of £6.95. breakfast was a huge portion. Crispy, salty bacon, long and thick pork-filled sausage, wonderfullyslippery fried mushrooms that swam in a generous helping of baked beans. The black pudding was round, thick and of a superb richness, which - when paired with the sweetness of the large, grilled tomato - was a heavenly combination. The fried potatoes were crisp on the outside with a fluffy interior and proved a much-needed saturator to the runny golden yolk. The breakfast came with two slices of chewy, buttered white toast - ideal for mopping up the plethora of gorgeous juices from the beans, egg and mushrooms. The quality of the ingredients really shone through and it was immensely satisfying knowing that, yes, it’s clearly not the healthiest of meals, but everything was fresh, local and traceable. Aside from the breakfast

bonanzas, Joe’s Café also serves slow-roasted pork baps, a wide selection of sandwiches, coleslaw and additional lunchtime sides. Cakes are supplied by the Brighton Cake Group - which is run by Dan’s sister, Lyndsey. Joe’s Café take reservations, a blessing considering the steady stream of people through the door looking for breakfast. Hats off to Jaz on front of house, she handled the hefty flow of customers with professionalism and a smile on her face - so important in the competitive world of Brighton cafés. Iain Chambers may be the king, but there is certainly a new breakfast Prince and Princess in Dan and Jane. Welcoming, affordable and high quality, I doubt there is a better breakfast in Brighton.

This juicy dark skinned variety is most commonly found in the vineyards of California where it is prized as one of the oldest and most established varieties in the country. This grape was originally only used to produce dark and fruity reds; Zinfandel is now, however, far better . known as a white wine variety especially in this country. These are a group of whites with a slightly pink hue due to contact with their heavily pigmented skins. Often on the sweeter side, the California sun and soil bring out a tropical flavour palate that makes them great as drinking wines. Often found in the cheaper bottles, if you look carefully you can find a variety of more refined and sophisticated specimens. The whites pair very well with heavily spiced dishes such as those found in Cajun, Indian and oriental cuisines and Mediterranean fish dishes. Beneath the warm sun and amid the azure of the Mediterranean, scuba-diving, mountain-biking, rock-climbing, hiking and horse-riding can be enjoyed throughout the year. At Acrobosc Ibiza, a tree-top assault course awaits; Ibiza Air Zone offers extreme Zorbing experiences; and the natural environment can be utilised for any number of activities. Approximately 18 kilometres of natural sandy beaches mark Ibiza’s coastline and kitesurfing is fast overtaking windsurfing as the key water sport. Now, I am no kitesurfer; In fact,

flying a kite with my daughters on the Downs can sometimes be a challenge. But, in Ibiza, the easy warmth and shallows of Cala Martina offered me scant discomfort. Cala Martina is a sheltered stretch of sandy beach where a fabulous coastal walk can also be found. As a 16-year-old in Ibiza, the thought of getting on a bike that was not a clappedout moped - which completely invalidated my travel insurance - was the last thing on my mind. But experiencing the island’s unique beauty by mountain bike, through craggy coastal trails and wooded pine-scented tracks, was a profound experience. In

When I first travelled to Ibiza, it was for no better reason than to consume as much of life’s pleasures as possible. I was only 16 and had just left Dorothy Stringer High School; a group of friends and I decided the best way to celebrate this turning of the school tide was to spend two weeks partying on the island. We discharged our responsibilities admirably. Surrounded by a multitude of like-minded souls, we crafted that particular elegance that only young British holidaymakers in Spain can. So if you are going to be leaving Sussex and taking to the slopes this spring - or simply looking for an improvement in your core stability and balance - the following exercises are designed to increase your physiological performance, while also acknowledging the specific bio-mechanics of skiing in order to reduce injury. If you are a follower of our weekly features - or if you are a visitor to our studio - you will know that our mantra is everything to do with posture, balance and “proprioception” (awareness of the position of one’s own body), all of which skiing examines. The steeper the pistes, the faster you go; personally, I am lingering on the green slopes for now. There is intense pressure on your ability

Britain’s poorest drivers hit by rising cost of motoring The least well-off families in the UK have slipped further into transport poverty, according to new figures. Data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) for the RAC Foundation found that around 800,000 car-owning households spent at least 31 per cent of their

disposable income on buying and running a vehicle in 2012, compared to 27 per cent the previous year. The poorest families had a weekly spend of just £167. And £51.40 of this was to buy and run a car, including £16.40 on fuel, £9.50 on insurance and £6.10 on repairs

and servicing. Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said: “For the poorest car owners, there is little opportunity to cut motoring costs further. They’ll already be driving as little as they can and will have cut back on things like maintenance.”

Try the squat hold

And they are helpful for all of us, not just those who are hitting the Alps or Apennines. ■ If your stomach can still handle it, we have not discussed what happens when turning to your less-dominant side: a plethora of imbalances at your hips and legs can occur. Albion fans to be treated to cup replay tickets by the club Richard Morris

Seagulls supporters heading north on Monday evening to cheer their team on during the FA Cup replay with Hull City will be able to get the price of the ticket reimbursed by the Albion. Brighton and Hove Albion have told fans the club will cover the cost of entry to the KC Stadium as a thank you for their continued support. It means that any season ticket holder or member who buys through the Albion ticket office will be treated to the ticket price in the form of credit on their Seagulls card. Tickets for the match are £15 for adults, £10 for seniors (over 65) and young people (aged 16-22), £5 children (aged 10-15), and £1 for children (under-10s) and the Albion are hoping a bumper flock of Seagulls supporters will head to Humberside for the potentially money-spinning match. The Albion’s cup run has already been worth between £650,000 and £700,000 to the club

AITC launches its first Brighton to Paris bike ride Cycling enthusiasts are being encouraged to get on their bikes this summer and take part in Albion in the Community’s (AITC) first ever Brighton to Paris bike ride. Launched in partnership with American Express and the Giant Shoreham bicycle store, AITC hopes the challenge will help raise funds to support disability sport across Sussex, whilst generating awareness of the charity’s work.

I am very proud of the performance of all my players. We played very well against a Premier League team and a very good side. “We had our chances to win but they did as well. In the first half we were the better side and in the second half it was very even. “If we had scored the second goal then the game in the second half would have been different but we did not do it and they then scored. “We knew that until the end Hull would push and press us but we had our chances, we didn’t take them and Hull took maybe the last one. “We will see how the squad copes now as it’s not easy to play two games in three days against two Premier League squads like Wigan and Hull”
