More than one in seven parking tickets issued in the city are subsequently cancelled, Brighton & Hove Independent can reveal. A remarkable 16,225 tickets about 14% of the 119,444 issued - were “waived” last year. If they had been valid, the tickets - three of which were issued to buses - would have netted the city council revenues of at least £500,000. Reasons for the cancellation of tickets fall into 88 categories, according to data provided in response to a Freedom of Information request. The top three categories are listed as: “Mitigating Valid pay-and-display”, 2,608

tickets; “Mitigating - Special circumstances”, 1,499 tickets; and “Mitigating - First offence; discretion applied”, 1,423 tickets. More than 1,000 tickets were rescinded after evidence was provided a vehicle was loading or unloading. Inadequate signing and lining resulted in 86 tickets being waived. The findings are among the latest to be published by the city council under its pioneering approach to freedom of information. It transpired that both executive committee members were voting for Mr Fitch, a relative of veteran councillor Brian Fitch, whose father Stan was a Brighton Council stalwart. The farcical proceedings came hours after the local party posted news that former Brighton and Hove Albion chief executive Martin Perry was to be a candidate in the city. Councillor Warren Morgan, leader of the Labour Party in Brighton and Hove, said that he would be found as safe a seat as possible. Late last year Councillor Farrow was told that he had not been chosen for the candidates list. He appealed and was restored to the list. And last summer Councillor Meadows was suspended after an anonymous claim that a gift had gone missing while she was mayor. No evidence could be found to support any wrongdoing on her part. Labour’s regional director Malcolm Powers is expected to order a run-off between Councillor Marsh and Mr Fitch.

Albion delighted by record Nike kit deal Richard Morris

Brighton and Hove Albion have signed a new record kit deal with Nike. The sportswear giant will team up with the Seagulls from June 1 this year – meaning the Albion’s first team, under-21 squad, women's and youth teams will sport new Nike kit when they return for preseason training at the club's new training ground this summer. It replaces the existing deal with rival kit manufacture Errea which has run since 1999 – with the length of the new Nike tie-in described as “multiyear” by the Albion.

Chief executive Paul Barber was delighted to announce the new partnership which has come at a good time for the club as it tries to address an annual loss of more than £14 million last year. He said: "In securing a long term agreement with Nike, we are delighted to announce another record-breaking partnership for the club. Nike is the leader in football and a huge global brand, which will help lift our club's profile as we continue to develop. "The new deal represents a significant increase on our existing commercial arrangement, and we are looking forward to working closely with Nike to give our supporters a new kit and

exciting product range." Nike has existing deals in place with the England’s national team, both of the top Manchester clubs and Everton as well as an impressive stable of clubs on the continent. The new Albion kit will be unveiled later this year and Brighton & Hove Independent understands the design of the home shirt will be unique to the Seagulls. Nike has also promised “a highly technical range of training and leisurewear” for both the club’s teams and fans alike. Albion's head of commercial Simon Williams confirmed the club would retain exclusive distribution rights via its club shop website.

Refreshing the corporate plan for the city reinforces the council's commitment to tackle inequality Jason Kitcat @jasonkitcat

The last year has seen many significant achievements for the council and the city. In the summer, we had record GCSE results and were also accredited as the world’s first "One Planet City", in recognition of our work to become more sustainable. More recently, we signed the Greater Brighton City Deal, which will see huge amounts of economic investment in the region and closer working with our neighbours, with whom we share residents, businesses and visitors. These and many more are outlined in the council’s recentlyrefreshed Corporate Plan, which sets out the council’s purpose, ambition and priorities as an organisation.

In 2014-15, we will continue to focus on our four main priorities: tackling inequality; creating a more sustainable city; engaging the people who live and work in the city; and modernising the council. Among our specific proposals are commitments to work with private landlords and the universities to improve standards of properties in the city and to establish an ethical lettings agency. We will also develop our libraries as community hubs, introducing new information technology facilities, toys for children, and study space. We will continue to look for ways to manage and conserve our open spaces so that their heritage, wildlife and use by local people can be protected. And we must use digital technology more to improve our services - both in terms of making them more accessible to our

digitally-minded residents, but also in making sure our internal processes are more efficient. The ongoing challenges of government cuts to our funding and growing service demand means that business as usual simply is not an option. We need to show our commitment to openness by sharing resources and expertise with our partners, such as the NHS and the police. Ultimately, working together and working differently will be the only way that we will be able to meet the challenges ahead.

On the eve of her trial after anti-fracking protests, the Brighton Pavilion MP insists

Next week marks the start of my trial at Brighton Magistrates' Court, following my arrest at Balcombe last August for taking part in a peaceful protest against fracking. Along with four others, I am charged with obstructing the highway and failing to follow police instructions to move to a specified protest area. We are all pleading not guilty. I have been touched by the good wishes of many constituents who have contacted me to let me know of their support for my actions. And I want to assure all my constituents that they will be able to contact my office as usual. I will be working around the hours of court proceedings to ensure that I continue to fulfil my parliamentary and constituency responsibilities,

and continue to represent the residents of Brighton Pavilion. Working to address the threat of climate change has been a priority for me throughout my political life. I know, too, that this is very important to large numbers of my constituents, because so many of them have written to me about the environmental risks posed by fracking, and the urgency of tackling climate change. As an MP, I am in the privileged position of being able to make the case in parliament. I have tabled motions, championed debates, put questions to ministers, and spoken out in the media - and will continue to do so. But the Government is ignoring the evidence, ignoring the climate science, and ignoring the enormous benefits of a secure and affordable energy system based on renewables and efficiency. Instead, they are set on a reckless and irresponsible new dash for gas, offering the fossil fuel companies generous

tax breaks as well as senior roles within government itself. Climate scientists and experts are clear that emissions from nations like the UK need to be reduced much faster than they are at the moment. We need a rapid shift to a zero-carbon economy, along with policies to keep the vast majority of known fossil fuels

in the ground, if we are to avoid catastrophic climate change. The window for action is closing fast. As a result, I decided to join the peaceful protest to send a clear message to the government, as well as to support and join those people at the proposed fracking site in Balcombe who were standing up to

be counted. There is a proud tradition of nonviolent direct action in this country. I believe that using peaceful means to try to stop a process that could cause enormous harm is not only reasonable but also morally necessary. I will not have recourse to any public funds to fight my case.

Top travel bloggers head for city Brighton and Hove is the destination for some of the world's top travel bloggers this weekend. They will visit the city as part of VisitBritain's first Global Bloggers Trip, which is bringing 31 top travel bloggers from 19 countries to Britain. They will experience different regions, attractions and activities across the country and share their experiences with a collective online international audience of more than one million followers. The trip began last night (Thursday) with a welcome event at The Warner Bros Studio Tour in Watford, before the bloggers split into groups to experience different parts of Britain through a series of themed itineraries - spanning North Wales, the Lake District, the Cotswolds, Brighton, Scotland, Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon.

A contingent from Denmark, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and United Arab Emirates will be in the city on Sunday and Monday (March 23 and 24) as part of a shopping-focused itinerary. During their visit, they will be using the #GREATBritain hashtag. The exposure generated from the bloggers writing about their experiences on this trip aims to deliver increased tourism interest in different regions around Britain, educating potential visitors about the range of things to do, and inspiring them to book trips to Britain to experience it for themselves. If you are running the Brighton Marathon on April 6, you are in the final countdown of your training. The Bridge Brighton - which is represented in the marathon for the first time this year - has published its top nutrition tips for fellow marathon novices. At this stage in your marathon training, it is all about re-balancing stamina and endurance work and making more time for your body to rest and recover. You need to build your energy and fuel reserves and avoid any last-minute injuries. Nutrition during this final countdown is really important, explains Natasha Cooper, catering manager at The Bridge, a community learning centre in Lucraft Road, Brighton. It is not just a question of what you eat, but finding time for proper meals when you can relax as well as refuel your body. "Around two-thirds of your total calorie intake should be coming from good carbohydrates - this includes things like pasta and baked potatoes, rice, bread and cereals. But protein and good fats are also very important. And make sure you keep yourself wellhydrated." Natasha advises eating smaller meals more often in this final phase of your training - replacing the standard three meals a day with five. And, as race day approaches,

look at increasing the amount of carbohydrates you are consuming. “Just because you're focusing on the carbs, doesn't mean that all carbs do the same job. Think about quality as well as quantity. “A good quality dried pasta doesn't necessary cost much more than a cheaper brand, but it is made from better quality wheat and can be more digestible. “Also vary your carb intake. Think about eating barley, beans (in moderation), bulgur, brown and wild rice, lentils and quinoa, a seed which can be cooked like rice and which is a useful source of protein as well. Sweet potatoes are also a really good choice. “If all you do is fill your plate with pasta one meal and rice the next, sheer boredom may stop you keeping your carb intake up. Variety keeps meals interesting. “Good sources of protein include lean meat, poultry, fish, nuts, eggs and dairy (not too much cheese). Now the weather is better, get outside - even if it's just a short break while you eat. "Of course, everyone is different and you may well be working with a running club or more experienced running partner who is able to give you specific advice. Spotlight on Adam Stower, the illustrator behind this year's Young City Reads title at the University of Brighton. He has lived in Brighton ever since. Speaking from his city-based studio, where the windows leak Sea-swimmer, beard-wearer and when it rains, he recalls that his biscuit-lover: Adam Stower, the first published illustration was talented illustrator behind this in his school magazine when he year’s Young City Reads title - was aged only nine. Since then, Francesca Simon’s The Sleeping he has gone on to illustrate Army - has been drawing ever everything from wine-bottle since he was old enough to hold labels to school mathematics books. He told me, however, that a crayon. The Prince's Boy by Paul Bailey This is an elegant, swooping foxtrot of a book. Set in Paris in 1927, it tells the story of Dinu, a Romanian sent from Bucharest by his wealthy father to live the life of a literary bohemian and to sample the delights of a Parisian way of life. Dinu is an innocent in Paris and is encouraged by his cousin to live la vie de Boheme. But Dinu is drawn towards the Bains du Ballon d’Alsace, a notorious brothel that caters for gentlemen looking for something a little bit "different". (It also has a velvet couch that belonged to Proust in the salon.) It is here that he meets Razvan, a fellow Romanian, the adopted child of a man of wealth and taste - a prince’s boy - who becomes Dinu’s teacher in

the ways of the world. The love that Dinu has for Razvan lasts a lifetime and transcends lust, separation and even death. This is a delicate, moving exquisite novel from one of our most celebrated of writers. I suggest that you read this while sipping a cut-glass full of Madeira and nibbling on a Madeleine. It evokes a dreamlike state of reading; I found myself imagining that noises from outside my flat were in fact a horse and carriage delivering a bunch of lilies from Proust and inviting me to tea, and that the cries of the seagulls were in fact the songbirds of the Bois de Boulogne on a sultry summers day in 1927. because his drawings had a lot of fire, laser beams and superhero’s capes in them. He encourages all of us to get a sketchbook and to fill it with doodles from our imagination or sketches from real life. Aside from his illustration work for children, he also does regular editorial and advertising illustration work. He visits schools and libraries, where he entertains children

with readings and live drawing demonstrations. Children from three primary schools that are taking part in this year’s Young City Reads met Adam on World Book Day at workshops at Jubilee Library and Whitehawk Library. He fired up their imaginations and got them drawing characters from The Sleeping Army, including the wonderfullynamed Snot the Beserker. Currently, Adam is impatiently waiting for the rain to stop dripping into his studio and for the sun to start shining. And when it does, he will be downing pens and heading to the

beach for a spot of sea swimming. One of the joys, he says, of living and working in Brighton.

Anyone with a sense of humour will almost certainly agree the recent performance of The Treason Show at Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham was an absolute hoot. For me, it was one of the funniest things I have watched

for a long time. I particularly liked the Newhaven sketch - and the rendition of "24 hours from Telscombe" was hilarious. I could not help noticing that there was a completely different type of crowd from the audience at the previous show, many of whom I had known. With Kinnock leading the way, New Labour took over the Labour Party in the 1990s. They were determined to eradicate all traces of socialism. Tony Blair’s scrapping of Clause 4 meant that Labour had no principles or guidelines.

If there is one word that sums up Benn’s career, it is democracy. He wanted Labour MPs to represent their constituents not themselves. The expenses scandal was, above all, a consequence of their unaccountability. In his obituary, Patrick Wintour said some old ministerial colleagues would say nothing. Their "bitterness" against Benn’s movement for democracy in the Labour Party was undiminished. In the words of Joe Hill, of the American labour movement known as “the Wobblies”: Don’t mourn. The new bishop for Brighton and Hove said that he would ordain women. Richard Jackson, the Bishop of Lewes, will be the first bishop to do so in the Diocese of Chichester, which includes Brighton and Hove. The 53-year-old father of three said: “I’m hoping to be a bishop for everybody. I will be ordaining women to the ministry. I am very much looking forward to the first ordination of women priests by a serving bishop in the diocese in June.”

Fraud-by-mail scams are costing pensioners across Sussex millions of pounds. Derek Trimmer, headteacher of Hove Park School, has offered reassurance to those worried about the prospect of the school becoming an academy. He said the governors were under a duty to make strategic decisions in the best interests of the school and its pupils; exploring whether to become an academy was just one of the options. He said parents, staff and the community would be consulted. Govenors will meet on Monday, March 31.

Brighton Dome is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Abba winning the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton by giving fans a chance to perform on the same stage. The Swedish group won in 1974 with its hit song Waterloo. Organisers are looking for people to take part in a video installation in which participants will be given headphones and allowed to sing and dance along to the hit.

Tributes have been paid to Tony Benn, the former Labour MP and cabinet minister who died at his London home at the age of 88. Among them was one from Ivor Caplin, the former Labour MP for Hove and defence minister who said Mr Benn was a charismatic figure and “an immense character in the Labour movement”.

The scheme uses Super Connected Cities funding from the government’s Department for Culture Media and Sport. Brighton and Hove City Council has issued the first voucher to Tilt (www.wearetilt.com), with Metranet, a local wireless internet service provider. The Brighton company had struggled to find an affordable solution to their slow broadband problem, which occasionally resulted in employees having to run to coffee shops to upload work.

Jon Malyon, managing director, said: “Four years ago we were a three people and a dog start-up. Our business broadband package suited us fine to begin with, but we found, as we grew and employed more people, we desperately needed more bandwidth.” Brighton and Hove was one of a number of cities across the United Kingdom to be selected as part of a government scheme to offer businesses better access to highspeed quality broadband. There is £1.5 million for vouchers in the city.

£9m investment Councillors are planning to spend more than £9 million on transport projects over the next year - with a focus on maintaining, managing and improving the city’s roads, pavements, street lights and seafront arches. Aquarium Terraces: a sorry saga that has no obvious end in sight Graham Chainey

Above the doorways linger the words “Fun”, “Amusements” and “Leisure”. But you will find none of those things there any more. Affixed to the glass may still be a licensing notification, dated October 2012. But you cannot get a drink here. Or anything else. All is dark. It was supposed to be the trendiest of locations. But, 14 years after it first opened, the Aquarium Terraces development in Madeira Drive remains a depressing dump. With the enforced closure last December (with loss of Christmas bookings) of the popular Terraces Grill and Bar, only two of the upper units are now occupied: the Harvester pub, next to the Sea Life Centre, and Burger King. There has long been an atmosphere of neglect and decay about the place. Parts are boarded off, including some steps down from Marine Parade; there are graffiti; lamps are broken or

defective; rags of flags flap in the wind. Many units have never been occupied; others have seen businesses, like that amusement arcade, come and go. The blight extends into nearby Max Miller Walk. How distant now seem those turn-of-the-century promises. There were going to be eight upmarket restaurants and bars, we were told, “all with outdoor seating areas where visitors will be able to enjoy panoramic sea views”, and, in Unit 9, one of the largest nightclubs in the country. The scheme, according to the developers’ spiel, was going to “revitalise Marine Parade and boost Brighton’s reputation as the fun capital of the south”. But those eateries never happened. Those crowds “walking along, having a drink and taking in the sea air,” never materialised. Various applications for the massive nightclub - to the relief of local residents - never reached fruition. (That unit is currently a gym.) Five years ago, the original developers, Compco, sold the lease on to a company called

Brighton Seafront Regeneration. But despite glittering promises of a motoring museum, a dance school, a six-bedroom boutique hotel, a Bistrotech restaurant, and such, they have so far failed to live up to their name. Oddly, it was they who closed the best business, The Terraces bar, with the intention of removing what is arguably the only attractive architectural feature, the pavilion structure it was in, while Burger King, which they promised to close, remains. Large parts of the original listed structure were destroyed or detrimentally altered back in 2000, to make way for this lamentable development. I remember watching the copper roof of the lift tower being demolished at 6am on a Saturday - presumably an hour when nobody at the council could be alerted. Lots of fine solid Edwardian steps and stonework, as well as the old Concorde venue, were bulldozed to make way for the current characterless congeries. edged with unsightly antiintruder wiring. A hundred years ago, this terrace was a centre of community vitality. There was dancing and promenading, skating and bands. Then, more recently, the area was occupied by a funfair, with go-karts and dodgems, a clairvoyant’s booth, and the famous Viking swing boat. These were at least traditional seaside entertainments, whereas what has replaced them is something blandly generic that could be anywhere.

I do not know what can be done with this ongoing mess, particularly in the present economic climate. Maybe the whole site needs rethinking from scratch. At least our planners should learn from their previous mistakes, particularly about not swallowing developers’ hype and about preserving structures with character and history that do not need replacing anyway. Student entrepreneurs compete for chance of £50k start-up prize Frank le Duc @BHcitynews Student entrepreneurs from City College Brighton and Hove are getting close to turning their business dreams into reality with a £50,000 prize fund. The Young Start-up Talent initiative is aimed at 16- to 25-year-olds who have that special spark to start up in business. In the hotly-contested semifinal of the Dragon’s-Denstyle competition, 14 young businessmen and women were selected to pitch their ideas to leading professionals. Among companies represented were Mayo Wynne Baxter, Juice FM, and Harvey Fowler Accountancy. Six finalists were chosen, among them Ricardo Mwe-DiMailila, who was pitching his

business Treble & Base, an online musical platform for start-up artists. Marwood: A wildly-refreshing celebration of independence @placesieatbtn

True independence is rare in Brighton and Hove. Peel back the layers and often you will find cleverly-constructed marketing companies, ownership by larger, more corporate brands, and an underwhelming sensation that your decaf soya latte is not really sticking it to the man, merely filling their pockets even more. This is why Marwood is so wildly refreshing. Opening its doors in November 2010, Marwood is tucked away on the corner of Ship Street, partly on the site of the old Post Office. Richard Grills, manager and allround lovely bloke, took over the premises on a whim after returning from a stint running pop-up bars in Melbourne, Australia. The Marwood is a tricky establishment to categorise. Split over two large floors and a

fantastically-bright garden, the “café” is not really a café and it is not really a coffee shop either, nor a restaurant. What Richard has created is a community space that serves great food, well-priced alcohol and superb coffee. Make use of The Marwood as you will. Personally, I adore whiling away an afternoon sipping tea and eating slices of their homemade cake. “People either love it or hate it,” Richard says, over a cup of coffee. The bohemian, laid-back community ethos may not be to everyone’s taste. “This is silver service in jeans,” he jokes. and dining off a pre-loved table. Well-presented, the spicy chorizo was thickly sliced and lay glowing a reddish hue across a thick piece of lightly-toasted bread. Not overpowering, the sausage went beautifully with the rotund slice of warm goat’s cheese. Topped with a grilled tomato, this (questionable) fruit provided a wetness to the plate and paired well with the dryer ingredients. Finished off with a dazzling dressing containing a mild balsamic, fine shallot and garlic, as well as a side salad, the Devil’s Toast was more like the work of God, as opposed to Beelzebub. Other dishes include hangover breakfasts (complete with Bloody Mary), daily specials, nachos and soup of the day. All very reasonably priced and of a truly

great level of cooking. With weekly events including open mic, quizzes, bingo, artists’ residences and soon-to-be supper clubs, Rich and the Marwood team have it nailed with their offthe-wall approach and generous helpings of great food, cake and coffee. I understand the importance of why we have corporate chains and how precious they can be to the economy (hell, my part-time bread and butter is working for one of the biggest brands in the world). This little beauty has been cultivated in France for well over 1,000 years - with the first official mention found in official documents dating to about 845 AD. It is one of the most important varieties used by white-wine producers in the Loire Valley - and its crystalline acidity and ability to age well has seen a boom in its popularity over the last 30 years. Malta and its craggy-faced little brother, Gozo - along with the tiny Comino - is a joyful archipelago to visit. Populated by all manner of invading forces throughout its turbulent past, Malta is a glorious hybrid of cultures and customs. The Maltese islands are partItalian, part-Moor, a little bit Spanish, a fraction French, and have a strong line of Anglooxygenated blood in them. In fact, the United Kingdom was the last indomitable power to hold sway over the islands from whom they seceded in 1964. This cross-pollination has left the indelible marks of the rise of one empire and the fall of another; it has created a spot in the Mediterranean almost unlike any other. And that is a really good thing. Valletta, the imperious, stonyfaced capital, was formed atop a rocky peninsula and imposes

itself as robustly now as it did when it was built hundreds of years ago by the Knights of St John; the party district called St Julian’s captures the engaging and lively spirit of the republic; and, across the main island, history slaps you across the face around every corner. Small wonder Malta has been described as one big open-air museum. In this ethereal landscape, activities abound everywhere. Unsurprisingly, for a small group of islands set in the Mediterranean, water sports rule the waves. A big scuba-diving destination, Malta may not have the “Oh-myGod-it’s-Nemo” factor of the Red Sea resorts a few hours further east, but the seas are warm particularly in summer - and there are some decent dives around in crystalline waters. Many, however, prefer the top of the water and will know Malta from Brighton-based Swimtrek’s highly-popular guided swimming holidays. Then, of course, the usual aquatic feast is served, including

Audi S1 delights with electrifying pace

Fitness fads are sprouting up but you have to be careful Paul Coneyworth @BeauPilates

The S1 may be fast, but the hefty price tag is hard to swallow

First impressions Taking what’s effectively a VW Golf GTI engine, dropping it into a car from a couple of sectors below and adding four-wheel drive sounds like a crazy recipe. And it’s good, very good. The S1 combines everything drivers loved about the A1 quattro – the performance and the looks – with all the strong points of a regular A1. At £24,900 for the three-door, it’s not exactly cheap, costing around £1,200 less than a Golf GTI. But if you’re after a small, fast hatchback and want something a bit more premium and a bit more exclusive than a Ford Fiesta ST or Renaultsport Clio – not to mention with extra performance – look no further. Performance The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor lurking in the S1’s short nose kicks out a healthy 231hp. Mated to a sixspeed manual gearbox and Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system, it means the 0-62mph sprint is dispatched in 5.8 seconds. It feels every bit as strong, too, helped by a 273lb ft swell of torque. And that’s available

from around 1,800rpm, the engine pulling strongly from there through the mid-range and hurling the S1 down the road with a gruff, turbocharged fourcylinder roar piped back into the cabin. It sounds very good indeed.

S1 gets the same full five-star EuroNCAP crash safety rating, while that ever-present fourwheel-drive traction, plenty of electronic driver aids and big brakes should ensure great stability and peace of mind.

Interior Most are fans of the regular Audi A1’s interior – it’s by far and away the nicest cabin in the sector. So adding a few S model touches has finished it off beautifully. Quality is extremely high, as you’d expect, and every surface is cloaked in leather and soft-touch plastic, which makes the S1 a delight both to cruise and charge around in. This is a grownup and refined small hot hatchback. There’s not much room in the back, so don’t expect to be carrying passengers far, if at all.

The verdict The 2014 Audi S1 is something of a surprise. You may worry that it might feel a bit overblown, that 231hp in a supermini-sized body would be too much for the chassis to deal with. But fear not. It’s supple and controlled, and rides well – probably the biggest revelation from the car’s launch. That engine is stonking, with loads of sustained shove linked to plenty of reassuring grip. Then there’s the impressive interior quality you’d expect from an expensive Audi. But that’s the S1’s drawback: price. It’s £7,905 more than a Ford Fiesta ST, even if it is more powerful and more premium, that’s a big price to pay for the extras – literally. Combined with a few practicality issues not present in most of its rivals, that’s the only reason the S1 is a four-star car. On performance, handling and quality alone, it’s top of the class.

Economy and safety Despite that 2.0 turbo motor and all-wheel drive doing its best to sap efficiency, fuel economy and CO2 emissions are impressive at a claimed 40.2mpg combined with 162g/km for the three-door. This falls to 39.8mpg with 166g/km CO2 for the Sportback. Based on the regular A1, the

If you are a parent, you are probably more used to thinking about what you can do for your child - or what you are willing to do for them, but would rather

Believe it or not, fitness fads are not a recent invention. For more than 3,000 years, we have sought new and exciting ways to remain healthy and increase our physical fitness. Whether we are talking about Milo of Croton, who in the sixth century BC lifted a bull daily to increase his strength, or the amalgamation of salsa and merengue music to create Zumba in the early 1990s - and let us not forget Wii Fit in the Noughties fads and trends move rapidly and are ever-evolving. Of course, as one of the most dynamic and changeable regions of the country, the people of East Sussex know that not all fads withstand the test of time. Unless anybody can confirm any bulllifting sightings in Preston Park? We are almost a quarter of the way through 2014 and at the start of year it was reported that the fads of this year will be: bodyweight training, heavy technology…and Brussels-sprout diets! Although I did consider entering the debate on the positive influence sprouts have on an individual’s diet, I decided against it, having banished them from my household this Christmas. This brings me to bodyweight training, which has been used for a long time now as a convenient and favoured way to exercise – because it incorporates your natural range of movement coupled with the fact that it is free. Bodyweight training is so widespread because you access all body parts to become your own personal gym. Although bodyweight training is a fantastic method of exercise, I always have to err on the side of caution with respect to the

Take three of the most famous - and sometimes infamous exercises in the repertoire of a personal trainer: burpees; the plank; and the sit-up. If done incorrectly, any of these three exercises can cause significant injury to your lower back and knees. The old British chestnut of “no pain, no gain,” is relevant here. And I must stress that is absolutely the wrong mentality. When attempting bodyweight exercises, it is of paramount importance that you do not stretch yourself to failure: a state where you cannot do anymore. Of equal importance, you should always consider your alignment - especially during squats, lunges and burpees. This should be taken into consideration before you even consider what your end-goals and overall ambitions are. I do not look forward to driving past Palmeira Square or the Hove Lawns; I often shudder at the poor choice of some personal trainers and their weight-training enthusiasts. Albion museum opens to tell ‘story that inspires’

Brighton boast the biggest average attendance in the Football League and now that bumper crop of Seagulls can find out more about the club they love. The highly-anticipated club museum has opened to supporters next to Dick’s Bar at The Amex and season ticket holders, Young Seagulls members and those fans on the Bronze and Blue schemes receive one free entry per season. For everyone else the cost is a modest £4 for adults or £2 for concessions – with tickets available from the club shop. It will be open Monday to Thursday (various times – see club website) every week and 10am to 2pm on non-match day Saturdays and 9am until 11am on Saturdays when the Seagulls are at home. And, as museum curator and Albion historian Tim Carder explained, there is a lot to see. He said: “We have some real gems for the shirt aficionados, with more to come. There are a

Three into two won’t go – another defensive dilemma Last week it was a question of Gordon Greer or Lewis Dunk – this time Oscar Garcia has to decide which central defenders to pair after the Albion impressed without Matthew Upson. The former England defender sat out his first league game – indeed his first minutes – since his arrival last season as the Seagulls secured an impressive 2-0 win away at Bolton Wanderers. Dunk and Greer kept the barn door bolted in his absence – leaving Albion’s head coach with a tricky decision ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday) home game with Ipswich Town. The Brighton back line leads the division in terms of stinginess – leaking a league low 28 goals from their 35 matches and chalking up 17 clean sheets. Lewis Dunk has only started two league games this campaign – against QPR and Bolton – but contributed to shut-outs in both games. If, as is likely, Oscar opts for the ever-dependable Upson and club captain Greer, Dunk can certainly consider himself unlucky to miss out. Rohan Ince – increasingly the rock on which Albion’s best performances are built – should continue in midfield, with Keith Andrews, Jake Forster-Caskey and Dale Stephens competing for remaining two central slots. Forster-Caskey in particular has impressed and improved in equal measure while playing the majority of the team’s last three games. Will Buckley will rightly get the accolades today, but the others will be equally happy to have kept the defensive record intact. “We came up against a difficult system but we were able to control things in the way we wanted to and we got the first goal and made them change which we were pleased about. “We are also pleased with our position - but it’s important nobody gets carried away as there are eleven games to go and in the league a lot can happen in that time.
