Green MP’s first formal statement about demo arrest

IN HER OWN WORDS It seemed to be a very legitimate form of raising awareness on a very important issue”

Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Sitting in silence in the dock, the five defendants struggled – from behind a glass screen - to survey Court 6, the scene of their week-long ordeal at Brighton Magistrates’ Court. A score or so of concerned citizens watched on from the public gallery. Two or three journalists sat and took notes. Seagulls screeched on the roof outside. Yesterday, for the first time, the court heard Caroline Lucas speak in her own words. More accurately, a transcript was read out of her interview with police shortly after her arrest on that

fateful day in August last year. Today (Friday), she is expected to speak in person, in her own voice, giving evidence in court. In her statement to police, Ms Lucas said she thought her arrest at an “anti-fracking” protest at Balcombe was disproportionate because the issue was important and she was not inconveniencing anyone. Ms Lucas said she had visited Balcombe the day before for a march to Cuadrilla’s oil exploration site. “There were lots of people milling around the place,” she said. “At that point, it was not clear that there was a Section 14 in place. At no point did anyone >> Continued on page 3

Designer demo: New t-shirt from Katharine Hamnett EXCLUSIVE by Frank le Duc @BHcitynews

Katharine Hamnett, the pioneer of ethical and environmental clothing, has designed a special t-shirt to demonstrate her support for the anti-fracking campaigners on trial for involvement in the anti-fracking protests at Balcombe last year. Ms Hamnett said: “Climate change is the biggest threat to our future and fracking will only compound the threat. Caroline Lucas is one of the few politicians to fully grasp the threat from irreversible climate change and take a real stand. I am behind her and the other anti-fracking activists every step of the way.”

> Continued from page 1 say or do anything that would have required anyone to make that statement.” Issuing a Section 14 notice is something akin to reading the Riot Act. Ms Lucas said she had felt very privileged to be able to address everyone. She said she stayed in Balcombe that night and at 9am on the following day she went to Cuadrilla’s site. She said she joined a group of about 20 people sitting in the entrance area at about 10.30am. “We were not blocking the entrance. We had been told that Cuadrilla was not working on these days. It seemed to be a very legitimate form of raising awareness of what is a very important issue,” she said. Ms Lucas said she had tried other ways to raise awareness of fracking and climate change: “I had tried to raise the issue in parliament. It seemed like the government was not listening throughout. I was especially important that everything was non-violent – as it was.” She spent about five hours in the entrance. There was singing and chatting, and people brought the group food. Most of the police attention early on was on people in the road. “It didn’t feel that we could not have got up,” she said. When asked why she had chosen that location, she said: “I chose it because it was not on the main road. It seemed to be a place where people were milling around.” The police did not interact with her group until quite late, Ms Lucas said. Police protest liaison officers read out the Section 14 notice and handed it out. “One landed on my lap””, she said. “Yes, I scanned it.” She described the scene as the police talked about the

War of words in Labour selection re-run Frank le Duc @BHcitynews A would-be Labour candidate has been accused of spreading "inaccurate and misleading information" about a fellow party member. The accusation came after Harris Fitch, who hopes to be chosen for the safe seat of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, sent an email to branch members as he awaits a date for a selection run-off. It followed a selection meeting when councilors Leigh Farrow and Anne Meadows were re-selected, as reported in last week’s Brighton & Hove Independent. Councillor Mo

Marsh, who topped the poll at the last two local elections, tied Mr Fitch for third slot. In his email, Mr Fitch wrote: “As far as I know the meeting was carried out incorrectly and a fellow candidate has complained about this. This may result in having to hold the meeting again for the final candidate or it might require selecting the three candidates at once.” Controversially, he added: "Due to the ward's inactivity, Moulsecoomb and Bevendean may well have been the reason that Kemptown went to the Conservatives, but this will not be allowed to happen again. "That is why I hope that you will place your vote behind my name when the new selection

meeting is called. We are trying to build a sustainable, energised and effective campaigning machine here. Please support these goals by selecting me when we next have the opportunity." Later, Cllr Meadows sent a follow-up email to branch members: "It has been brought to my attention that some inaccurate and misleading information has been sent to you. I am sorry to hear that members are being accused of doing nothing in the ward.” She added: "It is a shame that the hard work of the two Labour councillors (Marsh and Meadows) with support from university students and hardworking GMB members from Croydon is being misrepresented in this way."

order. “There was a lot of noise at that point and it would have been quite hard for some people to have heard.” Ms Lucas was asked why she did not move: “I wanted to express solidarity with other protesters. The response from the police, it felt like a disproportionate demand. No one seemed inconvenienced at all by us being there.” She said the livability of the planet was at stake: “Climate change has been one of the issues most important in my political life. I felt that response was disproportionate … it felt it was legitimate to stay there and

make that point.” Ms Lucas and four other campaigners deny obstructing the highway and breaching a police condition on protesters imposed under Section 14 of the Public Order Act on August 19. It is alleged they failed to use the designated protest area established in the Section 14 order. The trial continues. Same-sex marriages mark a milestone in fight for equality - but further reform is needed Jason Kitcat @jasonkitcat

The first same-sex marriage in Brighton and Hove - and one of the first in the country - is taking place early tomorrow (Saturday), just after midnight. It is a huge milestone in the fight for equality for same-sex couples. I am proud that our city, with our reputation for tolerance and diversity, is at the forefront of recognising this leap forward. Greens were the first party to argue that all couples, regardless of their gender, sexuality or faith, should be able to choose between marriage and a civil partnership. After a long campaign for "Equal Marriage", legislation was finally passed in parliament last year to allow people of the same sex who love each other

between civil partnerships or and want to marry to do so. Brighton and Hove is already marriage. In the meantime, though, this is the second-most-popular place in the United Kingdom for civil a great opportunity to celebrate partnerships, with the most the enormous step forward that recent figures showing that equal marriage represents. And I hope you’ll join me about 220 a year take place. Many residents and visitors alike chose in congratulating the happy our city as the place they want to couples that tie the knot on this celebrate their special day, which historic day. is no surprise with all Brighton and Hove has to offer. When the national Same Sex Couples Act comes into effect tomorrow, however, the same rights that heterosexual couples have always had will finally be given to same-sex couples. I hope that many more people will choose our city as the place to get married - whether in one of our many wedding venues or in a place of faith. We would also like to see further reform to allow everyone - whether same-sex or opposite-sex couples - to choose In the first wedding ceremony in the music room of the Royal Pavilion, Neil Allard and Andrew Wale will be married at a minute past midnight

City bus fares go up by 10p - but passengers can avoid a rise by buying tickets before they board Most adult bus fares will increase by 10p from April 13, Brighton & Hove Buses has announced. The increase means a rise of more than 4% on the price of a standard single journey, which currently costs £2.30. But a majority of customers can save money by using "the key" or M-tickets. The package of changes the company is introducing will freeze prices for many passengers; for others, there will be new ways to get value on their journeys - especially when using digital technology. Brighton & Hove Buses said it was keen to encourage passengers to switch to key cards and M-tickets, because prices were

cheaper when compared with paying on the bus or buying scratch cards. In addition, such methods saved time and helped keep buses moving punctually. Only one in five customers pay when they board; the company aims at continuing to reduce the proportion. Mike Best, the commercial director, said: “The range of options for our customers is increasing, allowing customers to make their choices away from the bus with the use of the new digital sales options on smart cards and mobile phones. "Families, students, under-18s and city-centre travellers, all have options to keep their prices unchanged, with frozen prices this

spring on the Family Saver, still at £9; the student 7-day Saver on the key stays at £12.50; the Bus ID continuous payment ticket remains at £29 per month; Centrefare stays at £2; and all Nightbus fares remain unchanged.” The company’s NEW DUO Saver M-ticket for two people travelling together was developed

in response to suggestions from current M-ticket customers. Two people can travel together with the convenience of a DUO on one phone. DUO tickets will remain priced at £7.80. The £2 Centrefare will now also be available on M-tickets and a new citywide area single ticket is being introduced on M-tickets,

priced at less than the current cash fare at £2.25. Students will get the benefits of M-tickets, too, with student Savers coming in on M-tickets for sevenday and 90-day durations. For more information on the changes to bus fares, visit: www.buses.co.uk

Restoration plans

Garden centre

Residents are being invited to have their say on a master plan for restoring Brighton’s Stanmer Park estate to its former historic glory. Proposals include renovating more than a dozen listed buildings - and finding new uses for them. An historic walled kitchen garden would be brought back into use and the estate’s listed 18th-century parkland recreated. Part of the plan is to ensure the park becomes a key gateway into the South Downs National Park. It would entail better sustainable transport links; on-site parking and traffic management would be improved. A series of staffed exhibitions are being held at Stanmer Park and other city locations next month.

The Mayor of Brighton and Hove, is to open a charity garden centre at 10am tomorrow (Saturday). Councillor Denise Cobb will formally open The Greenhouse at Emmaus at the homelessness charity’s base in Drove Road, Portslade. Emmaus Brighton and Hove said: “Whether it’s a patio, garden, conservatory, balcony, terrace, allotment or window box, the greenhouse is packed with blooming good ideas to bring both indoor and outdoor spaces to life by offering stunning hand-crafted planters made from people’s discarded or unwanted items. “Greenhouse customers can also enjoy an unrivalled selection of bargain-priced second-hand gardening books, tools, as well as garden and conservatory furniture. There are also a variety of seasonal plants, vegetable seedlings, nursery shrubs and custom-made container displays available at very affordable prices.”

Female genital mutilation: First prosecution is a challenge to city council and Sussex Police Jean Calder @jeancalder101

The Foundation for Women's Health, Research and Development - FORWARD - was founded in 1983 by the remarkable Efua Dorkenoo to campaign against FGM. Largely as a result, the practice became illegal in the United Kingdom in 1985. In 2003, the Female Genital Mutilation Act in theory at least - strengthened the law, raising the maximum penalty from five to 14 years in prison and making it an offence for UK nationals or permanent UK residents to conduct FGM abroad, even in countries where it is legal. This did victims little good, however, for over the last 30 years there have been no prosecutions at all. This is despite the fact that there are reported to have been more than 140 referrals to police in the past four years alone. Some estimates suggest that in the UK there are 24,000 girls at risk of FGM; FORWARD gives a figure of 6,500 girls a year. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of women suffer the appalling effects of the procedure. A recent survey of

However, we also need to ensure that girls at risk are urgently protected; survivors need to be empowered and given the physical, psychological and emotional support they need to speak out.” Here in Brighton and Hove, we have a significant and growing number of immigrant communities likely to have experienced FGM. I recently submitted Freedom of Information requests to both Sussex Police and the city council, asking whether they had been involved in investigations of suspected FGM, what policies and arrangements for training they had in place, and whether any steps had been taken to inform the public and support victims. The council gave a fairly comprehensive reply admitting there had been no joint child protection investigations with the police, that they have never taken legal steps to safeguard adults vulnerable to FGM, and that they have no specific policies about FGM, nor any specific strategy for professional training - though they say there is a “shared understanding” among professionals that this should be treated as a child protection matter. Given the seriousness of the issue, there was a worrying complacency and lack of urgency in this response. But it was far better than the reply I received from Sussex Police, who curtly refused my request for information - on the basis that the cost of providing information was “above the amount to which we are legally required to respond”.

Friday, March 21: a great day for women; a great day for the country. It was the day Alison Saunders, the director of public prosecutions, who formerly worked in the Crown Prosecution Service in Brighton, announced the first prosecution for female genital mutilation (FGM) is to go ahead - and that others are under consideration. A male doctor at the Whittington Hospital has been charged - along with another man, who allegedly encouraged him. It seems the alleged “operation” took place at the hospital and was a re-infibulation, a procedure whereby the woman’s vulva, which has previously been mutilated, is sewn up again after childbirth. It was over 30 years ago that I read about FGM in a book by Mary Daly called Gyn/Ecology. I vividly remember my feelings of disbelief, horror and rage when I learned of a practice that mutilates and disables so many There are reported to small girls and women, particularly in Africa have been more than 140 and the Middle East. After a one-day strike by the National Union of Teachers closed schools, a leading member argues

Teachers went on strike to protect education to employ unqualified teachers. Two out of every five teachers who qualify are no longer in the profession after five years. Councils are not allowed to open new schools, even where desperately needed, as the Government allows only new "free" schools to be opened, regardless of need. These drain local authority schools of funds and are often undersubscribed and prone to corruption or downright gross incompetence. Here is a quote from Paul Shellard, our divisional secretary, a teacher at an excellent local secondary school: "Gove seems to be increasingly isolated, as his weekly pronouncements do not accord with the experience and views of those working in education and with the public generally.

Val Cane

Perhaps you were inconvenienced by the NUT strike. Perhaps you even lost money. If so, please accept my apologies. Our members who came out lost a day’s pay, because strike pay was not payable. So you can see that we did not act lightly, knowing the implications of our actions. The fact is that we felt we had no real alternative. Michael Gove, the education secretary, has turned a deaf ear to all our requests for meaningful negotiations. In his zeal to be seen as the future leader of the Tory party, it suits him to be seen as uncompromising and to keep his profile high by a constant stream of initiatives that are not based on research or informed advice. Our campaign is not just about the rights of teachers not to work 60 hours a week (primary teachers), 56 hours a week (secondary), or 63 hours a week (headteachers) and to be able to retire before the age of 68. It is about the future of education. The stability of schools is under threat. Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris When I found out that David Sedaris will be appearing at The Dome in Brighton on Thursday (April 3), I had to sit down and have a cup of tea to calm myself. And to make things even better, two very dear friends bought me a ticket as a birthday present. Does life get any better? Well, frankly, no it does not. If you have not heard of him - where the hell have you been? he is, unquestionably, a star. He makes Oscar Wilde seem dull. Any writer that you thought was witty and funny and hilarious will pale by comparison. The only slight - and it is oh so slight - doubt that I have, is that you have to hear him, as well as read him.

But you have to hear him only once to capture the idiosyncratic timing and pitch - and then you will forever have his voice in your head when you read him. He is slightly unhinged, of that I have no doubt. Deadpan. Vitriolic. Dysfunctional. All these words can be applied to him. His Santaland Diaries famously take us to the time when he worked as an elf in Santa’s grotto in Macy’s department store, and had me quite literally weeping with laughter. In Me Talk Pretty One Day, he is at his ironic, sarcastic, deadpan best. But try to hear him as well as read him. Beg, borrow or steal a ticket for The Dome. Or, failing that, grab yourself an audiobook. You will thank me. I promise.

"It is significant that the School Teachers' Review Body has rejected his proposals to further erode teachers' conditions at work. The legacy he would like to leave is where schools compete with each other like businesses with no guidelines on pay or conditions, a diet of tests and tables, and teachers who are not actually qualified to teach. “He will not listen to practitioners or take account of research about

how to improve achievement in education as he is driven by a freemarket ideology. "That is why it is vital that teachers keep standing up for education; it's not about self-interest but investing in the next generation and the opportunities they deserve.' As an English teacher, Paul puts the case succinctly far better than I could. Children are seen by some purely as exam fodder. Those who

get extra attention are not only those who struggle with school life, but also - in the less ethical schools - those who could attain the magic grade C in their exams but are predicted for a D. I don’t attach blame to this – because I know how ruthless central government can be with schools that do not "make the grade". Education is under threat like never before. So please support us!

Taxi-drivers contemplate 'direct action' after fears deregulation could threaten safety of the public The union representing taxidrivers in Brighton and Hove has said it cannot rule out "direct action" if the government presses ahead with plans for deregulation of the taxi industry. GMB leaders accused ministers of railroading the Deregulation Bill 2014 through its committee stage in parliament on Tuesday.

They argue provisions in the bill would mean the introduction of unregulated taxi-drivers as well as the end of criminal-record checks and vehicle checks. The union also claims they could mean the end of local licensing. Mick Rix, GMB national officer for the transport sector, said: "The government's proposals will

seriously put at risk passenger safety, and be a threat to women using the taxi industry, by being placed at risk to assault and attack by the introduction of unregulated taxi-drivers.” He said the proposals ignored the recommendations of a House of Commons transport select committee report last year that

would have brought a safer and more passenger-friendly taxi industry. Mr Rix called on the government to wait for an imminent Law Commission report and then to decide on any changes after next year’s general election. He added: "The last time the Tories were in power they nearly destroyed the railway industry; this time they may be supporting proposals by the Department of Transport which will destroy our

great taxi industry." Mick Hildreth, the Brightonbased GMB secretary for the taxi industry, said: “The House of Commons transport select committee in 2012 published a report that would have created a taxi industry to be held up as a beacon to the rest of the world. “It would have brought a safer, and more passenger friendly industry. Instead, the government have ignored a great report from a cross-party committee of experts."

Taxi-drivers in the city fear the government is railroading through changes that risk public safety

City food projects get £16,200 boost A total of 24 local projects shared £16,200 when this year’s Good Food Grants recipients were announced by the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership. The scheme, now in its eighth year, helps to support grassroots food projects across the city. Projects funded this year were chosen according to various criteria, including helping to alleviate food poverty, celebrating cultural diversity in the city, helping financial sustainability of food projects, and supporting or enhancing the experience of volunteers. One of the projects funded was the Magic Garden, a new community allotment for the families of children with disabilities. It was given money to cover equipment and a polytunnel. Medeni Elwick, who runs the project, said: “The money from the food partnership is going to enable our fledgling project to take a massive leap forward. As any parent knows, getting time to manage an allotment is hard, but when you have a child with significant special needs committing to an allotment alone is impossible.

“Our aim is to provide a supportive and rewarding space where parents and carers can meet, get some fresh air and exercise, and grow produce for themselves and their families.” The Rwandan Youth Information Community Service (rYico) received funding for 12 cookery workshops focusing on Rwandan food to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide. Vivenie Mugunga, of rYico, said: “Food plays an important part in Rwandan culture during the commemoration period. The grant from the food partnership will make a massive difference. “It will allow children to take part in fun, educational and meaningful projects and will help their parents deal with the social isolation that many experience during the anniversary period. It will give people the opportunity to discover and rediscover the value of Rwandan ingredients, recipes and cooking techniques that can be found locally yet are rarely used in European cuisine.” All newly-funded projects will begin in the spring.

The Brighton backers of a proposed university technical college (UTC) have taken heart from the positive results of a six-week consultation. Plans to open Newhaven University Technical College in September next year have been approved by the government. The UTC would focus on the knowledge and skills needed to work in the growing marine engineering and environmental technology sectors in the region.

Back2Back, a Brighton film-maker, has shot a documentary about a daring First World War escape by 29 British officers. The remarkable true story inspired what became known as the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III in 1944, made famous in the film starring Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson. The programme, the First Great Escape, was shown for the first time on Channel Five.

All the Sussex antifracking groups were there to show their opposition to "fracking" - hydraulic fracturing - the controversial method of extracting shale gas from deep underground, which opponents say spreads harmful chemicals into the soil and contaminates water sources in the surrounding area.

Last romantics? We have not seen the last of them! Graham Chainey

I was delighted recently when The Daily Telegraph headlined a review of an exhibition of works by John Craxton with the words “Britain’s Last Romantic”. “There’s no getting around it,” declared its opening sentence, “John Craxton, who died in 2009, was the last romantic.” Delighted, because I was beginning to fear we really had seen the last of the breed. WB Yeats, poet of the Celtic mists, was, of course, the very first last romantic, at least according to his celebrated declaration in the poem “Coole Park and Ballylee, 1931”. In it, he claims: “We were the last romantics - chose for theme / Traditional sanctity and loveliness”. By 1931, it seems, he, JM Synge, Lady Gregory and their Coole theatrical clique were feeling superseded and “all is changed, that high horse riderless” - a common complaint of last romantics everywhere. Well, a 1989 Barbican Gallery exhibition entitled “The Last Romantics” extended the field by including John Ruskin, the Pre-

The last of the last romantics: David Sylvian, glam-rock singer; Vladimir Horowitz, classical pianist; Max Eastman, American writer; a biography of Queen Marie of Romania

Raphaelites, the Birmingham School, and even Stanley Spencer (though not yet Craxton). One sensed the appellation was getting elasticated. But never fear. According to the title of his official biography, the actor and theatre manager Sir John Martin-Harvey was by 1948 definitely the last romantic. Studio photos of him certainly suggest he was in with a chance. Except, of course, that by 1978, according to his own biography, the rather dashingly-handsome American writer Max Eastman was the last romantic. Or that by 1984 the glamorous, British-born, and popular Queen Marie of Romania had seized the title. Her reign as last romantic, however, was brief. For

the following year came a television film called “Vladimir Horowitz: the Last Romantic.” The elderly classical pianist, he of the vampirish countenance and flat-fingered virtuosity, tottered forward to accept the accolade. Yet by 1992 another television show, this time about the Cambridge dons FR Leavis and Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, was being called “The Last Romantics”. Odd as it was to hear the austerely-critical Leavis - whose books tend to rip through such actual romantics as Shelley as if with a specially sharpened meat cleaver - described as a romantic, let alone a last one, it was even odder to see him paired by the BBC with his mutually-antipathetic contemporary “Q”.

A double-take was also necessary in 1995 when novelist Henry Williamson became the last romantic, according to the title of a biography. For Williamson, best known for his animal books, was a notorious fascist who memorably hailed Hitler with the words: “I salute the great man across the Rhine, whose symbol is the happy child”. He also apparently treated his wives pretty badly. By 1998, however, he in turn had been supplanted by glam-rock singer David Sylvian. Additionally, there have been at least two novels called “The Last Romantics”: one, by Ruth Harris, set in 1920s Paris and New York; the other, by Caroline Seebohm, in 1960s Oxford - while a 2007 film

about a frustrated composer was called “Last of the Romantics”. There is even a pop group called The Last Romantics. And that is just those I know about. All over the land - certainly here in Brighton and Hove - there must be loads of other last romantics, whether self-declared or so hailed by their families and friends. Every day, I suspect, at memorial services and similar gatherings, the claim is made: “Frank (or Deirdre) was the last romantic. We shall not see his (her) like again.” But one thing you can bet on is that we shall. We have not seen the last last romantic yet. Graham Chainey is a freelance writer in Brighton and Hove

The UK’s most affordable fitness courses are coming to Brighton and Hove Sideways8 Training, who offer Gym Instructor, Personal Trainer and Sports Massage Therapy qualifications from just £650 are launching an academy in Brighton. Sideways8 pride themselves in offering the best value fitness qualifications of their kind, while still delivering instruction of the highest quality. Nationally recognised courses in Gym Instruction and Personal Training will take place in August and September at Stables Gym, located at Brighton Racecourse. The courses allow students to gain employment as a gym

instructor or personal trainer, and consist of all of the practical instruction elements required to deliver outstanding training to clients, as well as the theoretical underpinnings of programme design. All courses are accredited by Active IQ, one of the UK’s leading awarding organisations, as well as the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) – the regulating body for fitness qualifications in the UK. Upon completion of the course, graduates will be REPs accredited trainers and able to seek employment in the UK,

Europe and throughout the world. Sideways8 will deliver these courses intensively over a period of weekends to enable graduates to start working in the industry as soon as possible. The course content is delivered via a combination of face-to-face training and independent study which is completed online and with a workbook. ‘Gaining the professional qualifications required by employers can be expensive’, explains Sideways8 course director Kristoph Thompson. ‘Traditionally, it was hard to find a good value course outside of the major cities of London and the north of England, which meant the added cost and inconvenience of travel. We aim to make it as easy as possible for people to follow their dream of working in health and fitness by offering great value and accessibility in all our courses.’ This will be the only course of its kind running in Brighton this year so early booking is essential. For more information or to book visit www.sideways8. co.uk or call 0700 3497 108.

Wired Sussex internship scheme breaks a vicious circle Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Cannot get a job without experience? Cannot get experience without a job? It is a vicious circle confronting almost every job-seeker. Wired Sussex - the membership organisation for the digital, media and creative sector - may have the answer, with its intern placement programme. The scheme offers financiallysupported placements to those looking for creative, digital and IT roles across the southeast. All placements are for six weeks and pay the Living Wage of £7.65 an hour. Can anyone become an intern? Almost anyone. You need to be already living in and eligible to work in the United Kingdom. There is no requirement for a minimum or maximum age or level of qualification but you will need to show that you are

suitable for the roles that you apply for and that you are seeking a foot on the creative, digital and tech career ladder. This could be based on previous qualifications or training, work experience or something you've done in your spare time. How long is the internship? Full time for six weeks. This gives both you and the company you are working for time to see if you are a good fit as many internships lead on to permanent roles. How do I apply? Check out the current available internships that can all be applied for online: www.sussexinternships.co.uk/ internships. You will need an upto-date version of your CV and a cover letter that is tailored for each internship that you apply for. When will the internships take place? Internships will be available throughout 2014 and 2015. How many internships can I apply for? You can apply for as many as you

like. The advice is not to apply for more than three. Applying for a range of roles will not give you a better chance of getting one, but may make you appear less focused. What are the chances of it turning into a full-time position? The internship programmes have run for several years now and, historically, around 70% of the internships have turned into job offers. Can I find out more about previous interns? The Wired Sussex Intern Placement Programme has nine intern mentors who have all been interns as part of previous programmes run by Wired Sussex. You can read about their experiences by visiting: www.sussexinternships.co.uk.

Scar-Jo’s been on an astonishing and varied run of form recently (Don Jon, Her, Under The Skin) and it’s to her credit that Romanoff feels like another string on her bow rather than a blemish on her CV. Consistently entertaining, it clips along with the swagger that Marvel has earned as the dominant force in modern

And the end result does at least help to bring around some seismic shifts to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a brave move from a studio unwilling to rest on their (ridiculously successful) laurels. Worth seeing? With a string of gratifying action sequences, and a breakneck pace leavened by a frequently witty script, The Winter Soldier stands alone as a solidly entertaining blockbuster.

The Creperie gives riviera touch to the classic seaside experience @placesieatbtn

Having studied French for six years throughout my teenage years, I should have come away with more than being able to say what my name is and where I live. My linguistic inabilities, however, do not dull my passion for French cuisine. Travelling through France in 2010 on what can be described only as a three-week wine-andcheese binge solidified my interest in this rich food culture. So imagine my rapture when The Creperie opened on March 4. Marketing itself as a cross between classic British seaside and the French Riviera, the tall blue-andwhite building at the bottom of Ship Street is a much-needed and exciting addition to this prime seafront location. The Creperie is already creating waves of excitement, not only in the French community, but also across Brighton and Hove. Using a local design team, manager Pete Bradford worked

hard to install clean and simple branding that is synonymous with both Brighton and our neighbours across the Channel. Think cool-blue and crisp, delicate white. Simple, yet effective and incredibly chic. With an establishment that immediately enthrals you with its decor and interiors, one can only hope that the food is also of a high standard. Having Karen Samuel, former head chef at Food for Friends, on board is a massive coup for The Creperie and her experience is present in the well-executed and diverse menu. Of course, crêpes are the main draw and take on many forms. Sweet crêpes, cold wraps and hot galettes fill the well-laid-out and clear menu. Those with a sweet tooth will revel in the dreamy toppings on offer: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, salted caramel marshmallows, strawberries, bananas, butterscotch, whipped cream, and the traditional lemon and sugar, are a few of many available. Cold wraps include more traditional pairings such as ham

and tomato, BLT, cheese and tomato, or Mediterranean roasted vegetables - perfect for lunchtime beach action, with a scoop of Gusto Geleto ice cream to follow. Taking a leisurely lunch, I was introduced to The Creperie’s range of traditional galettes, all made from French buckwheat flour, and gluten-free. With fillings that include ham, chorizo, wild mushroom, roasted vegetable, confit of duck and spiced chicken, these galettes are something really special. Being a born-and-bred Brightonian, the Sussex Smokie galette was a stand out for me. Presented on a large white plate with side salad, the galette was warm, inviting and tasted terrific a great balance of flavours, superb texture and wonderful aroma. I loved the dill-infused haddockstrewn cheese sauce. Sublime.

Another highlight was the Crêpe De Maison, a traditional French tartiflette made with potato, bacon, onion, reblochon cheese and onion. With full plates of food coming in at under £7 and paired with an affordable yet carefullyselected French wine selection, The Creperie is an ideal evening hangout. Whether it be a couple of crêpes to share, stopping by for a dessert or sharing a scoop of geletto, The Creperie has it covered. Open for traditional French breakfasts (and crepes, of course), light lunches and filling dinners, The Creperie is a breath of fresh air on the Brighton and Hove food scene. Vive La Crêperie! Dark-skinned and tightlybunched, these grapes have become central to Italian wine production over the last century. Such wines are renowned for their deep colour and balance of rich, velvety flavours, almost savoury at times, with hints of dark cherry, plum, and the peppery scent of sun-baked herbs. Tuscany is its spiritual home, where it forms the basis for some of Italy’s most famous wines, such as Brunello di Montalcino, which is a pure Sangiovese. Sangiovese is a key component in what is perhaps the most-widely-drunk Italian wine, Chianti, which is required to contain minimum of 70% Sangiovese, and Chianti Classico, its more prestigious cousin, a minimum of 80%. These are then blended to soften the pronounced tannins and compliment the fruity structure. This Tuscan powerhouse, when paired with aromatic Italian dishes such as pork ragu, veal chops or anything with the savoury herbaceous flavours of the Mediterranean, is a shining example of the best Italy has to offer. Jerusalem is the most international of destinations, but it is impossible to ignore the legacy of it’s conflict Tom Gallagher @GallagherTDG

It is hard to talk about Jerusalem without acknowledging its complexities. And, in truth, its geo-political past and present is part of what makes the city such an enduring travel experience. The Jerusalem Marathon, held last weekend in its fourth edition, sought to offer an event away from the tensions that so often define the city; it brought runners from across the globe to the most international of destinations. Despite the rising sun, the early-morning air chilled the city on the day of the marathon, which was more like a festival of running with half-marathon, 10- and five-kilometre distances held throughout the day. The heat that the day’s sunny disposition promised still

The Jerusalem Marathon sought to show a different side of the city

refused to permeate when, at 7am, thousands of runners crossed the start line. But the temperature rose quickly and the hilly course, at even the fivekilometre mark, began to take its toll. Broadly speaking, the marathon coursed through centuries of history as well as an increasingly-modern landscape. The route began on the Ruppin

the dynamic face of today’s Jerusalem. Runners then worked their way up to The Old City; through the ancient Jaffa Gate they poured, where hundreds of years ago travelling pilgrims arriving from the port of Jaffa on the Mediterranean coast, came to pay their religious respects. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Dome of the Rock,

and the Western Wall are still visited today by the pious and the curious. To run through Jerusalem is to run through history, intrigue and conflict. History is still being written here today, of course, and is bound in part to the sporadic bouts of conflict that spills into the street. Even the marathon, conceived as it was to show the rest of the world today’s modern and inclusive Jerusalem, was not without its own contention. For another year, there were protests during the event by about 100 demonstrators carrying Palestinian flags, angry at the route taken through Arab East Jerusalem, which was occupied and annexed by Israel after the 1967 six-day war. The race was won in a coursebeating time of two hours, 16 minutes and eight seconds by Ronald Kimeli Kurgat, a Kenyan. The day saw 26,000 pound the streets united in the joy of running. The following day a great plume of grey-black smoke pillared into the sky over the Old City. Protesters had taken to the streets outside the ancient Damascus Gate following the death of three Palestinians in Jenin earlier in the day. Some protesters were detained and the use of rubber bullets and tear gas was reported. Jerusalem should be

experienced. It is undeniably, unequivocally compelling. The marathon provided a reason to go, but in truth it was the city itself, its people, its visceral nature that was truly remarkable. VW does it again – the all-electric 2014 e-Golf is another brilliant Golf variant

A pain in the neck? Sniff your armpit! Paul Coneyworth @BeauPilates

The Volkswagen e-Golf reaches 62mph in 10.5 seconds – that’s 0.1 seconds faster than a Golf BlueMotion

Volkswagen has dropped the combustion engines and added a battery pack and motor for its amazingly frugal 2014 e-Golf. And it’s brilliant. Its range is still limited, but combining premium brand features with ultra-low running costs (less than £5 for a full ‘tank’), it’s certainly very appealing. Sensible if you live in a city, too. First impressions The all-electric VW combines everything that is liked about the regular Golf and adds to that incredible levels of efficiency not seen before in an electrically powered family hatchback, with even lower running costs than something super-frugal like the 88.3mpg Golf BlueMotion diesel. At £25,845 including the maximum £5,000 government subsidy for plug-in electric cars, it’s not cheap. But if you’re after a classy, well-executed practical hatchback that won’t harm the environment and is free to drive in the capital, look no further. Parenting Time Waits For No Mum

Mummy K @no_mum

If you knew me - and perhaps you do - you would know that I am a bit of a moaner. Thankfully, I can edit myself here and save you the annoyance

of listening to my complaints. If only my loved ones were so lucky! But one thing even they will never hear me moan about is

Tibbons’s sleep. At this point, aware as you surely are that “sleeping through” is the holy grail of parenting, you must think that Tibbons is one of the chosen few, sleeping through from eight weeks, or some such. I am going to have to shatter that illusion - just as I did for a colleague with a six-week-old waking three times a night. “Imagine going to work after getting up to feed that many times,” he said. “I know,” I responded. Cue the slight delay, as he

A hectic, technology-oriented life encompasses daily commutes, long hours spent hunched over a desk, and endless chattering into mobile phones. This is not a bad thing and I am certainly not one to judge. But how we sit, stand and even speak on the telephone can be detrimental to our posture (neck, shoulders and lower back). Which is why we continually aim at banishing the slouch here at Beau. Looking like the vulture characters from The Jungle Book is never a look to aspire to. Our focus this week will be neck pain - quite literally meaning a pain or stiffness in the musculature surrounding the neck and cervical spine. The common expression a “stiff neck” implies the restriction of movement. On occasions, this reduced movement can potentially extend to one or both shoulders and has the capacity to be associated with headaches. It is suggested that two-thirds of us will have neck pain at some time in our lives, so it is crucial we do not suffer in silence. In most cases, a stiff neck can be relieved immediately by

performing a series of exercises to relieve tension caused by tight or strained neck muscles. The most common cause of neck pain is a muscle sprain or strain to the levator scapula muscle, which is located to the back and side of the neck. One of our favourite exercises here at Beau to relieve neck tension is the “sniff your armpit” stretch. No, we have not made this up. Simply, when standing try the following steps: ■ Tilt your head to 45 degrees; ■ Take the hand on that side and grab the back of the head: ■ Pull down on your head so the nose is going towards your armpit; ■ Drop your opposite arm towards the ground to increase the stretch. We are sure these words will strike a nerve – both literally and metaphorically. Try the above stretch while you are watching the evening news tonight, if neck pain is bringing you down. If you need something a little more substantial, contact us for some Dynamic Pilates. Paul Coneyworth is master trainer at BeauPilates, 14 Bavant Road, Brighton BN1 6RD. realised I was not simply acknowledging his point; I really did know what that was like. He looked horrified. Six weeks was clearly tolerable for a baby to be waking at night in his book; 16 months was not. But I will not make apologies for Tibbons, or try to explain his sleep pattern. I should not have to. It is normal - and, for me, settling him twice a night is doable. And that is why you will not hear me complaining. Or at least not about Tibbons’s sleeping

style. You might hear me getting annoyed when people suggest this is the very worst thing in the world. Sure, getting up twice a night is not always what I want to do. But those times cuddling up to Tibbons are precious and they will be gone in the blink of an eye. Thousands of supporters have snapped up tickets to see England’s women’s team play their vital World Cup qualifier at The Amex. The Seagulls are away to Barnsley on April 5 and a healthy contingent of Albion fans are expected to travel north to cheer on Oscar Garcia and his team. However, those not able to go to Yorkshire for the Brighton game needn’t miss out on live football – with England’s women’s team kicking off against Montenegro at 12.55pm at the Seagulls home ground. And the club confirmed this week that more than 6,000 tickets have already been sold for the match – with many more expected to be purchased in the run-up to the match. Family tickets for two adults and two under 18s are available for just £10 while adults can watch the match for £5 and concessions £2. The North Stand

Albion fans are still waiting for the return of goalscorer Craig Mackail-Smith

and East Stand Lower will both be open and the attendance should be further boosted by a number of local youth football clubs taking advantage of group deals available. Earlier this week Albion chief executive Paul Barber met internationals Alex Scott and Casey Stoney in a final push to promote the fixture. He said: “It’s always a special honour for a club to host a national team and we’re delighted to have sold 6,000 tickets for England’s match at the Amex already.” And he thinks it shows how successful the Albion have been in promoting women’s football

as the Seagulls own side push for Women’s Super League Status. “As a club, we have integrated the women’s side of our football operations as much as possible,” he said. “Women and girls’ football is an important and growing part of our sport and, like in the men’s game, we’ve got aspirations to play at the highest level of women’s football too. “We are very committed to women’s football and hosting this fixture is another big step forward for the game in Sussex.” Tickets can be purchased online at www.seagulls.co.uk or by calling 0844 327 1901.

Albion in the Community at the Brighton Fringe Festival AITC is making its debut appearance at this summer’s Brighton Fringe Festival with two events announced this week. The Open Minds Living Library event, which will take place on Monday, May 12 at the University of Sussex is part of AITC’s Gamechangers initiative which aims to help beat stigma around mental health. The event will see Gamechanger volunteers, all with lived experience of mental

health tell their stories to the public alongside awareness workshops, an art exhibition and music from local band Tragic Roundabout. The Gamechangers project which has seen volunteers directly engage with over 700 people since its launch in April 2013 is funded by Time to Change, England’s biggest programme to end the stigma and discrimination faced by people with mental health

problems. The programme is run by the charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, and funded by the Department of Health and Comic Relief. For more details about the event and the project e-mail Caroline. orsola@albioninthecommunity. org.uk. AITC will also be part of a special street soccer event on May 31, between 1-5pm on the site of the city’s old Municipal Market on Circus Street.

Jesse Lingard showed on Tuesday night he has the pace to dazzle but the whole team must start sharpening their finishing skills. Big match preview: Brighton & Hove Albion v Middlesbrough

Goal-shy Seagulls need to start taking their chances Richard Morris

Brighton and Hove Albion are under pressure to up their goal-scoring rate or risk being cast adrift in the race for the Championship play-off places. Oscar Garcia’s side have found the net just 39 times in 37 league games so far this season - a record only worsened by six of the current bottom seven teams in the division. Top scorer Leo Ulloa has eight league goals to his name but was forced to sit out the Seagulls 1-0 away defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night. In his absence the Albion extended their goalless run to two games following the previous loss at Bolton Wanderers. The Albion have notched just 25 goals in 19 home league games – the ninth worst record in the Championship – but have secured 30 points on home turf. Last season Brighton managed 69 league goals over the course of the regular season and to match that total Oscar’s charges need to average more than three goals a game over the remaining nine fixtures. A goal gut tomorrow (Saturday) then would be very welcome. Oscar will hope Ulloa has fully recovered from the illness which saw him withdraw from the club’s midweek game – particularly as

Brighton have suffered from an over-reliance on their talisman this season

his replacement on Tuesday, David Rodriguez, has failed to find the net in his seven outings so far this term. Long-term injured Will Hoskins and Craig Mackail-Smith cannot return to full fitness fast enough for an Albion side struggling to find the net and suffering from an over-reliance on Ulloa. A lack of goals from midfield since the injury to Andrew Crofts - who had five goals to his name - has also hamstrung the side’s progress. One area which has not been a problem for the Albion is defence. The Seagulls back line boast the joint best defensive record in the division with second placed Burnley and despite leaking a poor late goal at Sheffield Wednesday

the back four and ‘keeper should remain intact. Bruno, who was involved with a heated dispute with Tomasz Kuszczak following Wednesday’s late winner, has been in good form and should retain his place. The Spaniard though is just one yellow card away from a ban having clocked up nine cautions this season. He will likely be charged with helping keep an eye on exciting Middlesbrough wide man Albert Adomah who likes to switch between the two flanks and was a January transfer target for the Seagulls. He has scored seven of his 11 goals when playing on the left and scored both his side’s goals in a man of the match display last time out away to Huddersfield.

It was a very cruel blow, we were much better than them and I felt we deserved to win – but with our main striker and goalscorer missing through illness that made it very hard for us to score a goal tonight. We hoped Leo would be fit enough to play but unfortunately he wasn’t. “Without Leo we tried something different. We thought that we would have spaces in behind their defence so we played David Rodriguez and Jesse Lingard down the middle in a central role. “I am sorry for the fans and also for the players, because they are doing everything they can to win these games. The players are creating chances and playing well but I believe we can play better.”

Since arriving on loan from League One Wolves, Stephen Ward has become a key part of the Brighton and Hove Albion stingy defence and continues to impress supporters with his high level of consistency. A solid defender, Ward also offers the Albion an attacking outlet on the left flank and has attempted 122 crosses while chalking up 1,335 accurate passes.
