MARCH FOR ENGLAND OUR ENGLAND An Independent View Once again, the streets of our city will be stained by the presence of the so-called March for England. A tiny minority of demonstrators - who take every opportunity to say they are not racists, they are not violent, they have nothing to do with the English Defence League will seek to give the rest of us a lesson in patriotism. It will not be pretty: young, shaven-headed, loud-mouthed white men, with a liking for hand gestures that are either obscene or fascistic. Businesses will be disrupted. The police will do their best. The right to protest will be protected - but it will be restricted to such a degree that it is largely meaningless.
£5.4m spent on agency teachers Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Schools in Brighton and Hove spent more than £5.4 million on temporary agency teachers in just two years. Ten schools accounted for 45% (£2,442,223) of the total spend on agency staff in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013, according to results of a request made under the Freedom of Information Act. The school that spent the most - £378,898 - was Hove Park School, the most improved secondary school in the city and one of the most improved in the country. Others included: Longhill School (£324,798); Mile Oak Primary School (£288,261); Whitehawk Primary School (£279,381); Dorothy Stringer School (£255,419); Cardinal Newman Catholic School (£254,922); West Blatchington Primary School (£216,470);

March for England demonstrators deny that they are racists
> Continued from page 1 The marchers will come. And they will go. The vast majority of us will stay away, say good riddance, and move on. A few hundred counter-protesters will turn out to voice their disapproval, to highlight the risk of what might happen if we all just shrugged our shoulders and stayed silent. Somehow - on Sunday and every day of the year - we must challenge the dangerouslydivisive and extremist views that the so-called March for England represents. Our England is not an England
Fire service
Firefighter cuts Fire chiefs are urging the public to comment on proposed cuts to fire-crews in Brighton and Hove. One proposal involves removing a fire engine from either Brighton or Hove, leaving just four based in the city plus an aerial ladder platform. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Authority said that crews would still provide 24-hour cover, despite losing 24 firefighters, but could save £1 million by the 201819 financial year.
fuelled by hatred and inspired by fear. It is not an ultra-right mirage, an artificial or imagined construct set in a past that never was. Our England is a peaceful nation, a nation of hope that looks to the future with optimism. The England we are proud of is an England that is rich in diversity, one that offers a wealth of opportunity and provides an abundance of compassion. That is the England we should all march for. That is our England. We do not need thuggish demonstrators coming to our city to tell us how to be patriots.

Portslade Community College spent £135,806 in 2011-2012, but no data was available for the subsequent year because it has become an academy. The amount that went on employing staff increased by nearly 12% from one year to the next - from £2,549,866 to £2,851,562. A council spokesperson said: "Individual schools hold their own budgets and make their own Hove Park School spent the most on agency teachers last year, totalling £234,424 decisions on agency spend. "The £5.4m spent on agency The 10 schools that spent most on agency teachers staff over the last two years is less than 2% of the city’s total 2011-2012 2012-2013 Total education budget for that period. Dorothy Stringer School £103,739 £151,680 £255,419 Some schools choose to use Cardinal Newman Catholic School £125,608 £129,314 £254,922 agency staff for cover, while others offer part-time staff who West Blatchington Primary School £172,750 £43,719 £216,470 are already on the payroll extra Queen's Park Primary School £52,840 £99,787 £152,628 hours. ‘Harrowing stories’ suggest experts have been failing autistic children Services set up to help some of Brighton and Hove’s most vulnerable children have instead been failing them and their families, according to an official report. Young people with autism have not been given a timely diagnosis, denying them help and adding to the strain on their parents, carers and relatives. The inconsistent and sometimes poor performance of health professionals, including family doctors, has also affected their ability to fit in at school and may have had adverse effects on their classmates. The findings came to light came after services for autistic children were the subject of a Brighton and Hove City Council scrutiny panel which reported last week. It estimated that about 550 children in Brighton and Hove have had autism diagnosed. The panel made 20 recommendations, many of them aimed at CAMHS (Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services). The report’s introduction, by Councillor Rob Jarrett, said:
“The panel heard a number of harrowing stories from people who have children with autism who felt they had been failed by the very services supposed to help them, children who had not received a timely diagnosis or support and who had struggled through school. "For these families, the experiences they have had must not be underestimated – or replicated.” The panel said in its report: “It must be noted that the panel heard some stories and ‘appalling experiences’ of people using CAMHS that go back over the years.” It said that changes were under way although CAMHS is being urgently reviewed nationally by the NHS and investigated by MPs belonging to the House of Commons Health Select Committee. The report also said: “The panel was concerned about the monitoring of existing services for children with autism and the apparent paucity of performance indicators. “The panel recommends that steps are taken to ensure that robust and publicly accessible monitoring procedures are put in place alongside a comprehensive feedback system for parents of

Ali Cill, 29, who runs Ottoman Cuisine, in Lewes Road, Brighton, pleaded guilty to charges of failing to stop people from smoking inside his restaurant, when he appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court last week. Environmental health officers from the council visited the restaurant in January after receiving noise complaints. Mr Cill was fined £120 and ordered to pay £120 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

The photograph to the right taken on Brighton beach in about 1910 - recently appeared in an Indian daily newspaper. It accompanied an article claiming that TE Lawrence Lawrence of Arabia - visited India to undertake an Ayurvedic cure for the stress he had undergone during the First World War. As a longstanding Lawrence enthusiast, I was able to dismiss this as nonsense. I could see at a glance, for instance, that the picture does not, as claimed, show Lawrence. But further research revealed a grain of truth behind the story. In fact, the central figure in the photo - Kuppakat Govinda Menon (1874-1936) studied at St John’s College Oxford in 190911, where a fellow student was Lawrence’s younger brother, Will. Menon, from Trichur in Kerala, on the southwest coast of India, was a married man of 35 when he arrived at Oxford, with a responsible position as conservator of forests. Will seems to have liked to befriend oriental students - “the Oxford outsiders” as he called them - and very soon Menon was a friend of the family and may even have stayed at their Oxford home during vacations. As this photo shows, he certainly went on holiday with them. The lady on the right is Mrs Sarah Lawrence (1861-1959), the pietistic disciplinarian mother of TE Lawrence and his four brothers. I have not been able to identify with certainty the young man on the left, but he may be one of the brothers. A school contemporary of the Lawrences, Canon EF Hall, later

Did young TE Lawrence ever visit Brighton?
The photograph on Brighton beach in 1910 has a fascinating story to tell (Published by permission of Mr V.N.Venugopal, Govinda Menon’s grandson)
recalled how he came upon Will Lawrence “practising high dives from Brighton pier one day during a vacation”. Surprised to see this, as Will was not known to be a diver, Hall asked him why he was doing it. Will replied that he was standing in for another young man who was in a diving contest, but had broken his leg. “He’s got a large family to support and I’ll do the high-diving for him and give him the money if I win.” Hall commented that “that sort of thing came from the mother”. This high-diving incident may well have occurred during the same holiday this photo was taken. It was Will, rather than TE, who subsequently visited Menon in India, in 1913. The oldest brother,
Bob, may also have stopped off there on his way to China in 1921. Did young TE Lawrence ever visit Brighton? One day in August 1910, he and the fourth brother, Frank, bicycled the 72 miles from Littlehampton to Rye, and must certainly have passed through the town. But, in the whole Lawrence literature, I know of only one other reference to Brighton, and that is in the third chapter of “Seven Pillars of Wisdom” where he mentions “the Jew in the Metropole at Brighton”. I used to assume this was a stock figure deriving from Mr Eugenides in TS Eliot’s poem “The Waste Land”, with his suggestive offer of “a weekend at the Metropole”. A stock figure that would attain its epitome as Colleoni in Graham Greene’s “Brighton Rock”. Greene himself later recalled how “the casual reference to Jews at one particular hotel is a sign of those times when one regarded the word Jew as a synonym for capitalist”. Closer investigation, however, reveals Lawrence had written the phrase before Eliot’s poem appeared in this country. So, unless it refers to some other literary source which I have failed to trace, it just might derive from some personal experience of the Lawrence family during one of their Brighton visits. Perhaps they stayed at that hotel, then the glitziest in town, or went there for lunch or tea.

Recycling rate drops to 25 per cent It has been reported that the recycling rate in Brighton and Hove has dropped to 25 per cent. The fall is detailed in a Brighton and Hove City Council report which looks at ways to tackle the issue. The council faces the prospect of financial penalties if it fails to raise recycling rates. One idea is to introduce an incentive scheme, with increases in recycling rates rewarded with grants to community groups. The proposed incentive scheme involves setting up a community fund where money is added as recycling rates rise. The council is considering adding £15 to the fund for every extra tonne of recycling collected. Estimates suggest that a citywide increase of just 1 per cent would add £16,000 to the community fund while saving the council about £43,000. At the end of each year community groups would be invited to bid for grants from the fund, which would be administered by the Sussex Community Foundation. The council is proposing that half the funds should be available for small grants of up to £1,000 and the rest for larger grants of up to £5,000. At 25 per cent, recycling rates in Brighton and Hove have dropped slightly over the past two years. The council said: “If all residents recycled their paper, card, plastic
bottles, cans and glass, rates could increase to around 35 per cent. “An increase of just 5 per cent could also save the council around £293,000 a year.” Labour’s environment spokesman Councillor Gill Mitchell said: “However hard the Greens try to put a spin on this, they cannot get away from the fact that recycling rates have plummeted since they took office in 2011.” She said that in 2008 the rate had been nearer 30 per cent. Councillor Mitchell was the Labour administration’s cabinet member for the environment until the Conservatives too office in May 2007. The Greens took over in 2011. The proposed incentive scheme will be considered by the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee next Tuesday (29 April). It is one of a number of measures being considered by the council to deal with falling recycling rates in Brighton and Hove. The council also hopes that the introduction of more communal recycling bins in central parts of Brighton and Hove will have a significant impact on recycling rates. Councillor Ollie Sykes, deputy chairman of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “There is no doubt
that recycling rates in the city have faltered over the years but there is also huge potential in the city for improvement. “The proposed incentive scheme would see communities reaping the benefits of their efforts and, when combined with the introduction of communal recycling bins, could well see recycling rates soar.” If agreed by the committee, the scheme could be introduced with immediate effect and run for a trial period of two years.
An increase of 5% in recycling rates could save the council around £293,000 a year

Bageye at the Wheel
FROM

by Colin Grant To his fellow West Indians who gather every week for the allnight poker game, he is always known as Bageye. They all have their own nicknames: Summer Wear, Pioneer, Anxious and Tidy Boots. There are not that many black men in Luton in 1972, but they all meet up at Mrs Knight’s place for the all-important card game. Bageye is finding it a struggle to make ends meet, but his wife, Blossom, has her heart set on a private education for her sons and will not settle for anything less. This is a story of a feckless father seen through the eyes of his 10-year-old son. It is a wry and gentle comedy about dead-end jobs, late-night poker, illegal mini-cabs, and smallscale drug-dealing. And the now-vanished world of growing
up a black boy in 1970s suburbia. The voices seem so real in this book and could only have been written by a man who had been there, seen it, and grew up with it. The accents and patois jump off the page like reggae, reggae sauce. Colin Grant now lives in Brighton and is a radio broadcaster, writer, historian and presenter. This is a rare privileged slice of his early life that I was delighted to have let him share with me. I loved this book. And I think you will, too. He is also a mine of information about Bob Marley and the original Wailers. Who knew? The importance of civil liberties Tony Greenstein @TonyGreenstein
According to David Blunkett, former Home Secretary, fears about civil liberties were "airy fairy" nonsense. In almost identical language, David Cameron attacked concerns over the extent of mass surveillance as ‘"la-di-da, airyfairy". It was all so very different
before Cameron took power. In 2009, in a speech at Imperial College he passionately declared that: "The action we take to rein in Labour’s control state and confront Labour’s surveillance state will help re-balance power in one direction by enhancing personal freedom and limiting the state’s power over us." Fine words. But then the securocrats took over. The barons of King John’s reign
were hardly nature’s liberals. But, in 1215, they forced the king to sign Magna Carta. Virtually every right, from “due process of law,” the right of trial by jury, habeas corpus, and the right to a free trial without arbitrary punishment can be found either explicitly or by inference in Magna Carta. The policies of Chris Grayling, the "Justice" Secretary and the prison-book banner, run contrary to Magna Carta’s pledge that

everyone shall have access to courts and that costs and money should not be an issue. The slashing of legal aid has left whole areas - clinical negligence, person injury, employment, immigration, social security - as legal aid deserts. Under the pretext of fighting terrorism, civil liberties are again under attack, 1984 style. Al-Qaeda is our enemy in Britain, but in Libya and Syria he is our friend! The moral is to keep out of others’ affairs. When Edward Snowden revealed the extent of domestic spying, he was accused of endangering national security. David Miranda, partner of journalist Glenn Greenwald, who broke the Snowden story, was held at Heathrow under terrorism legislation, before being freed without charge. The High Court duly prostrated itself at the mere mention of "national security". Snowden, an ex-member of the CIA, realised that spying on people’s sexual habits had nothing to do with "terrorism". The American people, however, still understand what liberty means. Obama was forced to end the mass surveillance of the population. Nobody should suppose for a minute that British surveillance has anything more to do with saving lives. William Hague, a man devoid of a single original thought, informs us that if you have done nothing wrong, you have got nothing to hide. This is the mantra of dictators throughout the ages. The government and police, however, are loath to lead by example. It is not true, of course. Workers blacklisted by employers for asserting their rights have done nothing wrong but face permanent unemployment. Despite blacklists being illegal, the big building companies were supplied with confidential information by the police. When Stephen Lawrence was murdered in 1993 by white racists, the police were given the names of the murderers the next day, by an informant; the police did nothing
for the first two days, the most crucial period of a murder inquiry. I attended the Macpherson Inquiry in 1998. It branded the Metropolitan Police institutionally racist, whereas I would say they are institutionally corrupt. Many were the promises Commissioner Paul Condon made that what happened was in the past and the Met had turned over a new leaf. We now know, thanks to Mark Ellison QC’s report, that - at the very same time - a police spy, Peter Francis, masquerading as a family liaison officer, was part of a unit given the task of attempting to smear the Lawrence family and anti-racist activists. At the same time as Condon was dissimulating, a police spy in the Lawrence household, N81, was meeting Commander Richard Walton, who was preparing the Met’s submission to the MacPherson Inquiry. Instead of instant dismissal, he was "temporarily removed from his post". The Met set up a Special Demonstration Squad, whose purpose was to infiltrate protest movements and encourage activists to break the law in order to put them away. They led by example. In the process, the spies had sexual relations and families under false pretences. Radical protest movements like Occupy were targeted. It speaks volumes about police neutrality that no police force ever thought of spying on the targets of Occupy - the tax evaders who defraud the taxman. And then there is Othona Inquiry into police corruption. A lorryload of files were deliberately destroyed. In the Metropolitan Police, this is just another day. No wonder that Cameron wants to scrap the Human Rights Act. A university technical college that will serve Newhaven, Brighton and the surrounding area is looking for its first principal. The sponsors behind the Newhaven University Technical College want a leader in place, with the UTC due to open in September next year. A public consultation is taking place as the UTC’s backers prepare a planning application which they hope to submit at the end of the month.
People supporting and opposing the March for England in Brighton on Sunday, April 27 have been ordered to stay apart. Sussex Police announced that they were imposing the legal orders to ensure any potential clashes could be avoided. Scores of people are expected to take part in the march and protest, which last year cost the taxpayer £500,000 in policing costs and forced seafront businesses to close.
Sussex have notched-up an easy victory over Oxfordshire in a 20/20 friendly at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground in Hove. The home-side won the toss and elected to bat and made 245 for 5 from their 20 overs. Rory Hamilton-Brown was the side’s top scorer with 117 runs. Ed Joyce hit 41 and Chris Nash, playing his first game of the season following illness, made 34. Oxfordshire made just 118 for 5.

Contestants in Brighton’s own version of the popular TV show ‘The Biggest Loser’ have completed their eight week challenge and lost a total of 19.3st between them. The challenge was run by three personal trainers from Freedom Leisure who, just like on the TV show, each led a team of contestants through a diet and exercise programme to see which team, and which individual could lose the most weight. Thirty contestants aged 2065 took part in the challenge which consisted of weekly group training sessions, weigh-ins and personalised diet plans. Winning contestant and mum of four Mellissa Breeds, 32, from Portslade, lost 2st 10lbs and won an annual Freedom Leisure Connected Membership, personal training sessions and nutritional packages from Performance Foods as a reward her for all her hard work. “Losing the weight has completely changed my life for the better and just in time for summer too,” says Mellissa. “I’m much happier, I feel so much

I would like to thank Freedom Leisure for supporting me. I couldn't recommend the challenge highly enough and would urge anyone who’s considering signing up for the next one to do so.” Applications are now open for the next round of Brighton’s Biggest Loser which will kick-off in September. “I would like to congratulate all the contestants who worked really hard on their fitness to complete the challenge and lose
weight. They should be very proud of their achievements,” says Freedom Leisure Fitness Manager Ryan O'Gorman. “We have all the tools people need to get fit and healthy but they have to work with us. They have done that brilliantly and are now enjoying the rewards.” Further information can be obtained by phoning Stanley Deason Leisure Centre on 01273 694281 or visiting www.freedom-leisure.co.uk

Patients were given an assurance that their surgery was not going to be closed at a meeting of the Hangleton and Knoll Health Forum, a patient participation group for three practices in Hangleton. A singing school for children in Hove is to open a branch in Brighton. Vocademy runs singing classes at Monster Studios in Basin Road, Hove, helping children to become pitch perfect and gain confidence. The new school is to open at the Brighton Electric Studios in Tramway House, Coombe Terrace, on Mondays. The aim is to give more youngsters the chance to try singing in a fun atmosphere.
Changes are under way in child protection in Brighton and Hove. Social workers, schools, police and NHS staff are being asked to work more closely together. They will work side by side in a set up known as the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub. Among the people making the changes locally are the former Police Chief Graham Bartlett, now chair of the Local Safeguarding Children Board, and senior council official Pinaki Ghosha.

Coach ban

Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby has spoken out against plans to build a housing estate in Ovingdean, promising to press ministers to review any planning application submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council. Nancy Platts, Labour’s candidate for Brighton Kemptown, also opposed the proposal but said that the plans were only made possible by the current government’s legislation which was supported by Mr Kirby.
Coaches are likely to be banned from several Brighton streets. The proposed ban would prevent coaches, HGVs and public service vehicles from entering The Cliff, Cliff Road, Cliff Approach, Roedean Crescent, Roedean Way, Roedean Vale and Roedean Heights, except for access. However, Roedean Road would be exempt from the ban because it is a bus route. The proposed ban follows complaints from people living in the area.
The former Sussex cricket coach Peter Moores has been named as the new England coach. It will be his second stint in charge of the national team after a two-year spell that ended when he fell out with batsman Kevin Pietersen. Moores, 51, the former Sussex wicketkeeper and captain, guided Sussex to their first County Championship in 2003 and in 2007 also lead Lancashire to County Championship victory.

Is it now time to try Facebook advertising?
Business Sussex County Cricket Club announce new partner The expertise of sports vision specialist Jim Green of Brighton optician Eyesite has secured a three-year contract with Sussex County Cricket Club as the club’s official provider of eyewear and eyecare. The Club’s squad has started the 2014 season with the crucial advantage that only specialist sports eyewear can deliver for the best peripheral vision and as a defence against the elements. Cricket is one of the most visually demanding sports - extensive research by the England & Wales Cricket Board shows that improving vision in differing light conditions increases players’ ability to catch the ball by as much as 28% - so the new partnership with Eyesite is set to sharpen Sussex CCC’s competitive edge even further. As well as the very latest in specialist sports sunglasses, Jim and his team will be providing
the team with every aspect of their eyecare, including Eyesite’s Advanced Gold eye examination, which is the most thorough eye test available, and a full sports vision assessment which allows for correction of the tiniest visual error that can make the difference between winning and losing. “We’ve enjoyed a long-standing
www.brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk
relationship with SCCC over the past 10 years providing basic eye tests for the squad, so we’re delighted to now be looking after every aspect of their vision,” said Jim. “We’re extremely proud to be playing a part in the county’s continuing success in cricket both in the UK and for the players who represent England.”
James Dempster @CobbDigital
Anyone that knows me in a professional sense, knows that I am a huge advocate of Facebook advertising. There is a common misconception that it only works for big budgets and B2C, but with the most common age group the 25 to 34 year olds (source: Emarketer) and the level of targeting that a company can drill into, it’s a real ROI driver for any budget. Facebook have just changed the way they run these advertising projects and on the whole they’ve made it even easier to create compelling campaigns. One of my favourite aspects of FB advertising is that the goal comes first. Many of our clients come to us asking for us to increase their Facebook, Twitter and Google+ presence and my question is always the same:

Q&A with the Montefiore Hospital’s Consultants
Southern Water scoops award
Mr Michael O’Connell, ENT specialist, answers general Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) questions. What are the most common ENT complaints that you see? “My practice covers all aspects of ear, nose and throat problems, but cosmetic nose and ear surgery, nose and sinus conditions, nasal polyps and allergic nose disease form a large part of my day-to-day work. Other common problems include ear infections, hearing loss, tonsillitis, lumps and bumps in the neck and throat, dizziness and tinnitus”. How do you approach treatment for these conditions? “An important part of being a specialist is to recognise the unusual, or difficult cases by thoroughly assessing patients to diagnose their condition and then advise on the best treatment for that complaint. People may develop a lump in their neck or throat and worry that this may be sinister or serious, but that isn’t necessarily the case.
By methodically assessing the patient, their medical history and symptoms I am best able to identify their problem and commence the right treatment as quickly as possible”. Are ENT conditions easily treated? “Most treatments are straightforward. When a patient comes for a consultation, questions are asked, recommendations are made and the benefits and potential side effects of treatment are discussed, so the patient can make an informed decision about what is best for them. Ongoing treatment will then be closely supervised.
What is your specialist interest? “Cosmetic nose and ear surgery and nasal reconstruction are the most challenging and rewarding parts of my field. I like to continually develop my practice and introduce new techniques. Recently I have been at the forefront of a procedure using balloon technology, to effectively treat sinus disease and manage debilitating facial congestion, catarrh and headache. It has proved effective and popular and allows rapid return to daily life”. For further information please visit www.spiremontefiore.com or call 01273 828 120.
Southern Water’s £300 million Cleaner Seas for Sussex scheme has won gold at a national awards ceremony. Incorporating a state-ofthe-art treatment works at Peacehaven, two pumping stations, 11km of sewer tunnel and a 2.5km long sea outfall, the scheme scooped gold at this year’s Considerate Constructors Scheme’s National Site Awards. Judges praised the scheme’s communication and involvement with the local community and the care shown to the workforce. Geoff Loader, Southern Water’s Director of Communications, said: “Cleaner Seas for Sussex was Southern Water’s largest ever project and we had to get it right for our customers. Work completed last year on time and to budget and this award is a fantastic recognition of a job well done.” The scheme ensures that the 95 million litres of wastewater produced each day by people in Peacehaven, Telscombe Cliffs, Saltdean, Rottingdean, Ovingdean and Brighton and Hove is treated to latest EU standards.
“What are you trying to achieve?” (I can thank an ex and very talented Sales Manager for that). With Facebook advertising, they want to know what you want to achieve at the beginning and then build a campaign around that. The standard is additional likes, but what if you’ve just created a cool new app, wouldn’t it be better if people install that? Or if you’re all about making money from marketing (and let’s be honest, why shouldn’t you be?) then creating a campaign about sending people to your specific landing page may be more relevant. You can now optimise ads so that they all feed into the common goal under the heading of “Campaign.” This means you can run a number of ads under this campaign, which will lead to more intelligent decisions and a better ROI. James Dempster is managing director of Cobb Digital specialising in all things digital.
The construction of the wastewater treatment works was carried out by contractors 4Delivery and took four-years to complete. The facility boasts one of the largest green roofs in Europe to blend it in with the surrounding landscape and an extensive odour control system. To keep the treatment works operating smoothly, customers are reminded not to be a pain in the drain by pouring fat, oil and grease down their sinks as it solidifies and can block pipes and sewers. The team at Peacehaven remove five tons of fat a week from water coming in from the catchment. For more information visit: www.southernwater.co.uk

Help the city secure decent jobs and decent pay Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy Trade union members from across Brighton and Hove are using a nationwide inquiry to highlight the need for better jobs and careers in the city. As part of the inquiry, unions want to hear the experiences and views of Brighton & Hove Independent readers so they can be reflected in the points they make to government and politicians of all parties in the run-up to the next general election. All the large Labour Partyaffiliated trade unions in the city are feeding in their experiences and expertise, including GMB, UNISON and Unite. The inquiry is also being supported by the party’s three parliamentary candidates: Peter Kyle, Nancy Platts and Purna Sen. Our involvement has been sparked by growing concern that too many jobs in the city are low paid, insecure, and offer too few opportunities for advancement. Most of us, I am sure, would recognise there are some great work
For the best travel deals,
come to
opportunities in our city. In public, private and voluntary sectors, there are employers who offer rewarding careers and decent pay to the many talented people looking for work. We also, however, know that there are lots of lousy jobs, too. We estimate that about one in four jobs in our city does not pay the living wage, and that zerohours contracts - under which people do not know from one week to the next how many hours they will be required for work - are on the rise; women and young people particularly affected. Hospitality, social care, and retail can be some of the worst areas to work in. But even previouslysecure jobs in the NHS and local government are subject to worsening conditions because of outsourcing and privatisation. Added to this, more people are working for themselves. And while self-employment might work for many, we also know that lots take this route because it is all that is on offer. Statistics produced by the TUC show that pay for self-employed people has fallen dramatically over
the last decade, making working life feel more insecure and reducing opportunities to save to buy a house or put cash by for a pension. The current inquiry has been instigated by the Smith Institute, which is a Labour-friendly thinktank named after John Smith, the party’s former leader. It is being chaired Ed Sweeney, the former head of the conciliation service, ACAS. We particularly want to hear about of your experiences in the workplace, good and bad; the nature of work in firms and organisations of different types or sizes; the experience of people in different jobs; emerging trends, such as migrant workers, casualisation, and self-employment; the experience of older people at work and occupational health; and what its like for young people starting out with their first jobs.
The inquiry will aim to set out an agenda for making work better and to define what makes a good job: characteristics of good work and work quality in a modern economy, such as pay and pensions, security, status, opportunity and career progression, training, autonomy, employee voice, organisational form and design; the connections and balance between work and family and social life; new forms of work, such as social enterprise and volunteering; what“voice”employees want; workplace relations and the role of trade unions; employer attitudes and management styles; institutional and cultural barriers; and the significance and appetite for employee ownership

Film times for Rio 2 at Cineworld Brighton: Constantin Stanislavski devised a method which replicates life and shows the realistic version of it. He believed that acting must draw on personal and believable emotions, in so doing the actors will deliver credible performances. He said: “All action in the theatre must have an inner justification, be logical, coherent and real.” Realism holds the idea that the stage is an environment rather than an acting platform. Kemp Town Carnival is fast approaching Taking place this year on Saturday, June 7, one of Brighton’s largest community street festivals is fast approaching. A red hot line-up of live music, dance and street theatre is coming together and endless Carnival treats are being planned. This week, Carnival organisers received news that Arts Council England has awarded the Carnival funding for the spectacular Maracatu Folklorico project; an interpretative stage and street performance telling the story of some of the many Brazilian ‘Orishas’ or deities. The performance will combine Maracatu Samba, Brazilian Folk, Capoeira and other North Eastern Afro Brazilian dance forms. The Carnival team is thrilled with the support from ACE but there is still a long way to go reach the £47,000 needed to secure the Carnivals future.
Mat Cook, Director of the Carnival since 2011, said: "One way people can help is by simply putting £1 in a bucket at the Carnival itself. We had around 25,000 people attend last year. If even half of those that came put money in a bucket we would not be in such a perilous financial position. I count myself as quite an optimistic and positive person but the reality is if we lose money again this year, it could spell the end for Kemp Town Carnival.” As well as another three fundraising events upcoming, the Kemp Town Carnival will be launching a Kickstarter campaign very soon. Visit the Carnival pages on Facebook and Twitter to find out more, and help keep this community celebration alive and kicking. www.kemptowncarnival.com Facebook.com/KempTownCarnival @KemptownCarni

Tom Schilling Generation War: Our Mothers, Our Fathers BBC2, 9.30pm Usually, if you want a Saturday night fix of subtitled drama, you have to turn to BBC Four. But now BBC Two is getting in on the act as well with this new series, the first foreign language show to premiere on the channel since The Kingdom back in 2001. But it’s not just the fact that the characters aren’t speaking English that makes Generation War unusual – it’s also exploring the Second World War from the perspectives of five German friends. It opens in Berlin, in the summer of 1941, as highly decorated officer Wilhelm prepares to leave for the eastern front.

Coggings & Co focuses on high-quality food at affordable prices with first-class service @placesieatbtn
Coggings & Co is the new burger restaurant in town. That is right, restaurant. Not a pop-up, not street food, not the world’s biggest, not the world’s baddest. Just straightup burgers served in a sit-down, table-service environment. Having opened on the site of Blenio Bistro, off Seven Dials, Coggings & Co is the latest establishment from Andrew Coggings, the restaurateur whose previous ventures include Preston Park Tavern, where he won Pub of the Year in the 2013 Sustainable Restaurant Awards. With Andrew’s priors having an excellent reputation for affordable, high-quality food as well as a strong emphasis on both sustainability and service, it is no surprise that Coggings & Co has taken on both of these attributes. Painted externally with a gorgeous deep purple, Coggings & Co fits in beautifully on Dyke Road among the high-end furniture and boutique shops. Fronted by large
windows, the restaurant is bright and spacious, scattered with a mix of study tables for two or more, each topped with thick wooden tops from local business, The Wood Store. The clever branding continues with well-presented purple-and-white menus, printed on thick, recycled paper. In keeping with their Sussex produce focus, Coggings & Co beef is fully traceable to Redlands Farm, Horam. Using chuck meat that is then ground in house daily, all burgers are cooked medium and served as 6oz patties in a Real Pattiserie brioche bun. There is both classic and slightlyadventurous burger combinations to be found at Coggings & Co: tomato, mayonnaise, dill pickles and salad, brisket and chipolte chilli with guacamole, sour cream and salad or the gorgeous-sounding
mushroom tapenade, Harvey’s rarebit and English mustard mayonnaise. Vegetarian and bun-less options also are on the menu as well as daily specials. Opting for a more traditional burger, I chose the 6oz patty with

coastal cheddar, dry-cured honeyglazed streaky bacon, mustard mayonnaise and salad with a side of triple cooked chips (£10.95). Given the option of whether I would like my chips cooked in beef dripping or vegetable oil was, again, a nice touch and an ideal option for the more health-conscious. Stacked high, slicing the bun and meat combo in half took some effort and it was rewarding to see a pink glow in the centre of the beef patty. The meat itself was burly, slightly smokey, and had an almost earthy, organic flavour to it. The light brioche held the fillings together well and did not slop and slide like in some other burger joints. What was most refreshing, however, about the Coggings & Co burger was that you could taste every single attribute: the oozing mature cheddar, the slightlysweet yet salty bacon, the smokey
mustard mayonnaise and (best of all) the meaty, well-seasoned patty. Each topping was there and had a purpose. Nothing too extravagant, just a highly-decent burger. Homemade mayonnaise, rocketlaced, peppery side salad and beef dripping chips completed the meal, along with a dessert off the specials menu: a supremely-sweet homemade Bakewell tart with homemade raspberry and white chocolate ice cream. Expect table service that is second to none and a great range of Sussex-produced beers, cider and organic wines, including Harvey’s, Wobblegate, and a series of organic wines. The focus on high-quality food at affordable prices will ensure Coggings & Co is full of families, couples, and friends all in search of a traditional burger in a restaurant setting.
This grape is a product of German engineering. The Geilweilerhof Institute of Grape Breeding created it for growing in the western Palatinate region of the Rhineland in the early 1930’s by crossing what is believed to be a Silvaner x Riesling cross with the MüllerThurgau strain. The result is a grape that has a highly perfumed flavour and high sugar content, but often lacks the crucial acidity that most popular white wine varieties possess. All this means that on the continent it is not as highly prized as it might be mostly used for blending, especially with the juice of Müller-Thurgau grapes to strengthen its perfumed flavours. It is in England, however, that this grape really has really come into its own, as the cooler conditions and tightly controlled yield mean that they can achieve a complexity of flavour and acidity unobtainable elsewhere. When it comes to finding the perfect accompaniment, it is best to pair these mineral British whites with fresh summer ingredients such as white fish and lightly dressed seafood and salads, and rich soft cheeses such as goat or Wensleydale.

The streets of San Francisco still beat in harmony with this new generation Greg Hadfield @GregHadfield It is a long time ago. But I had always hoped that when I went to San Francisco, there would be flowers in my hair. I was always too young to be a hippy, when it mattered. In the 1960s. I was barely 11 when Scott McKenzie sang what became the anthem of an era. In truth, it was the 1970s before I became a genuine laid-back, long-haired, peace-loving teenager. In Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Not California. Then, I hoped to die before I got old. Now, in my late-50s, the opposite is true. In such a frame of mind, I found myself last week in HaightAshbury: the junction of two streets of San Francisco that came to encapsulate the spirit of my generation. Here it was that Janis Joplin lived, too briefly. Opposite still lives her one-time lover, Country Joe McDonald, now 72. Up the
road was Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. Today, almost every address, it seems, is associated with a rock star, a poet, a philosopher, or a devil. Charles Manson lived in the Haight in 1968, in a garage in the 600 block of Cole Street. In those days, the advice of Timothy Leary - to those who “take the game of life seriously” was to “turn on, tune in, and drop out”. Today, the mantra is: buy your map, book your guided walking tour, and remember a world when - possibly for the first time everything seemed possible. In some ways, nothing has changed. The clock on the corner is still stopped at 4.20 - a coded reference to cannabis use; according to one explanation, 4.20pm was a favourite time of smoking for high-school students; it is still a way of selfidentifying with a counter-culture - as the handful of homeless and bedraggled people that occupy the corners of Haight-Ashbury are quick to point out, to tourists

I confess that I do tend to enjoy huge beards on men who clearly never intend to become real lumberjacks. Do not get me wrong. Some people usually journalists, straining reality to fit a headline - have tried to suggest that Brighton is the United Kingdom’s equivalent of San Francisco. If only. If only Brighton (and Hove) had a City Lights Bookshop, a Lawrence Ferlinghetti, an Allen Ginsberg or a Jack Kerouac, a Golden Gate Bridge, or an Alcatraz. If only it had a start-up culture to match that of Palo Alto. If only. If only the sun shone throughout the year, as it does in San Francisco, a city that is also defined by its fog and its microclimates. Not far up the coast, the

I cannot fully roadtest these myself - yet! But I really would not mind cosying up with some of the alluring and no doubt subtly fragrant customers pictured online in the BOTD (“Beard of the Day”) blog. I was quite taken with the sound of “Old Joll” beard oil at £6.95. It is handmade and contains ingredients to nourish both facial hair and the skin beneath, including stubble. The Jojoba oil, Vitamin E and essential oils of ylang ylang and sandalwood combine to soften, treat and stop the dreaded beard itch,

To eat the oysters of the Hog Island Oyster Company in Marshall, California, is an experience that delights. You can even bring your own wine and cheese and bread. Volkswagen reveal their 2014 Polo
The things you must consider when choosing new trainers Paul Coneyworth @BeauPilates
Volkswagen’s new 2014 Polo has mainly focused on infotainment enhancements inside the cabin
This is a new Volkswagen Polo, but it’s more of the same if the styling is anything to go by, VW’s refresh of its supermini contender a bit on the conservative side. Styling changes limited to the grille, lights and the bumpers, though even these are pretty difficult to spot. Good looking as ever, then. What is significant is Volkswagen’s work underneath that new, if familiar, body. The engine range has been extensively re-engineered, the Polo as freshbreathed as it comes with its EU6 emissions compliant engines, the fuel efficiency gains as much as 23 per cent over its predecessors. The engine The line-up consists of a pair of three-cylinder petrol MPI units of 59bhp or 74bhp, two 1.2 TSI four-cylinder petrol choices of 89bhp or 108bhp, a 1.4 TSI with 148bhp and a pair of threecylinder 1.4 TDI units with 74bhp and 89bhp. The interior It’s not just under the bonnet where the Polo has been tweaked,
the ‘new’ car featuring a far more comprehensive equipment list as standard. All come with a ESC electronic stability control, Hill Hold and Automatic PostCollision Braking System to increase safety, while optionally the Polo is offered with a driver alert system, adaptive cruise control with front assist and city emergency braking. It’s the infotainment enhancements that’ll appeal most though, every Polo now coming with Volkswagen’s latest modular touchscreen with proximity sensor. It reacts to swiping movements like your smartphone and offers plenty of connectivity options, apps, DAB radio, USB and Bluetooth. SE spec gains a bigger 6.5-inch version of the screen - over the 5-inch one in S trim - while it’s possible to option sat nav for a further £700. Refinement levels are superb, the Polo’s interior typically solidly built and clearly defined, the changes, like the exterior, being very subtle. Plenty distractions inside

If you ever hear the words “mother’s ruin”, you probably think someone is: a) using quite an old-fashioned phrase; b)
talking about gin. But any modern-day mother will tell you there is a far more ruinous vice in town: guilt.
then, though not really enough to hide the 59bhp’s relative shortcomings in performance, nor the gearshift’s less than accurate movement. It’s fine, though if you’re after fun then there’s better choices out there, the Ford Fiesta for example. That doesn’t really change with the 74bhp version of the same engine, but despite its small incremental on-paper performance increases - it only dropping a second off the 59bhp car’s time to 62mph - but it feels significantly quicker in reality. The economy penalty is all but non-existent, too. In either the steering remains fairly inert, though VW’s sensible lack of sporting pretensions with the suspension does mean it rides nicely enough, the trade-off being some roll in the bends. The verdict Keep it sensible, as buyers will and the Polo is as brilliantly conservative, effortlessly classy and beautifully built as ever, only now more economical and better equipped as standard.
You do not know what guilt is until you are a parent. A quick way to identify the mothers and fathers in a crowded room is to ask those who have ever felt guilty about going to the toilet or taking a shower to raise their hands. Et voila! There are the parents, hands limply in the air, recalling those guilty moments when they ignored their child’s plaintive cry to perform the most necessary of functions. It is like a switch gets flipped when you have a child; guilty
If boots are made for walking, then trainers are made for running. And running is what they do. See how I avoided the obvious Nancy Sinatra reference? The importance of a durable trainer that fits your specific requirements cannot be underestimated. It is recommended that you should replace your trainers every 500 to 700 miles; this would roughly equate to every eight to 10 months, if you run 15 or so miles a week. If you are considering changing your trainers, it can be a daunting task - with a wide variety of models available and the price tag to take into account. of course. It is, however, important you stay away from the temptation to choose the cheapest and safest option. With this in mind, I tend to follow three specific tips when choosing a pair of trainers: Select a trainer that is fit for purpose Consider the primary reason for the purchase and what terrain
you will be using your trainers on: road, fell, track, grass, and so on. If you plan to run primarily on the road, a cushioned, large heel may be an unwise purchase. Consider your running gait In certain running stores, you can ask for a detailed bio-mechanical analysis of your running gait. Which then details the correct trainer for you. If you over-pronate - as 70% of the general population reportedly do (ie the arch of your foot collapses while running or walking) - this can place undue stress on your knee joints, because they will rotate inwards due to your ankle instability. Therefore, the selection of a more rigid structure under the arch of the foot in a trainer would be advantageous. Socks This may sound a little throwaway, but always wear your socks you train in when selecting a trainer. This can affect your feel and interpretation of the trainer at the time of purchase. The above is something you would not usually give too much thought to. But, coming from a strength and conditioning background, the margins are such that the finer details are often what I take most joy in discussing. Once you have chosen the appropriate footwear for your fitness needs and goals, you then have licence to consider the fashion element. We do after all operate and live in the ultratrendy pockets of Brighton and Hove.
New trainers are needed every 500 to 700 miles
pleasures are no longer limited to the anodyne pop songs you like to sing along to in the car or the trashy television you secretly love to watch of an evening. Oh no, the potential for guilt is everywhere. Luckily, there is an antidote of sorts, anyway. When the real mother’s ruin rears its ugly head, apply the following thought liberally and repeat as often as required: a relatively guilt-free parent is a happy parent and a happy parent equals a very happy

child. So you see, by avoiding mother’s ruin wherever possible, you are doing your children and yourself a favour. And if that still does nothing to silence the guilt, you could always give the original mother’s ruin a try. Suddenly, it all makes sense. Brighton take on Palace rivals in charity match Richard Morris
Brighton and Hove Albion fans may have spent the season looking up at arch rivals Crystal Palace and lamenting their relative Premier League success in staying up – but later this month supporters of the two clubs go head to head in memory of an Albion fanatic who was killed during 9/11. Lifelong Albion fan Robert Eaton was working in the World Trade Centre when the Twin Towers were attacked by terrorists and was among the thousands of innocent people who tragically lost their lives. Fellow Brighton supporters set up the Robert Eaton Memorial Fund (REMF) to raise money for junior football clubs and sporting schemes across Sussex, New York and Africa and the charity gone on to raise more than £120,000. Earlier this month the REMF confirmed two new grants of £5,000 to a pair of African football charities and previous donations have included funding
The REMF recently donated £5,000 to a scheme in Africa
a £30,000 mini bus for the Seagulls Specials, a sponsorship package for the Albion’s power chair team, kit and equipment to local junior clubs and £3,000 to Coaching For Hope, a charity which uses football to support young Aids victims in Cambodia. The highlight of each year’s fundraising effort is a hotlycontested match between Seagulls fans and Crystal Palace supporters at Lewes FC’s Dripping Pan stadium. This year’s match takes place on Friday, May 2, with kick off at 7.45pm. Entry is £5 for adults or £2 for under 16s (or free if accompanied by an adult).
The Brighton players are busy collecting sponsorship and anyone who would like to donate can do so online at www. justgiving.com/remfmatch2014. The game usually attracts a crowd of more than 400 and previous cameo appearances have come from the likes of Albion legend Peter Ward and former Brighton manager and current Gillingham boss Peter Taylor. A spokesman for the REMF said: “This event is always an enjoyable evening and I would recommend it to anyone who has not been before. “There is a friendly, family atmosphere and all are welcome.”

Straight from the commentary box So it’s come down to the last two games of the regular season and Albion’s fate currently lies out of their hands. There may yet be a few more twists and turns in the push for that final play-off place but it feels like 3 points against relegated Yeovil is essential. Sandwiched in between the final two games of the season is the club’s awards night. Firstly, I have to say it has been wonderful to see last year’s young player of the year Solly March break into the first team and hold his own in the Championship arena. He has made 25 appearances and scored his first goal for the club in the FA Cup win over Port Vale. Last year’s winner of the main prize, Liam Bridcutt has gone, (but may yet return to the Amex next season) so who will be top dog this year ? The sport show on BBC Sussex on Easter Monday went in search of answers among the crowd watching the Blackpool game.
Upson to be Albion Player of the Year?
made a difference this year. Injuries to key players such as Will Buckley and Andrea Orlandi have restricted their attacking influence this term but I personally would hand it to Upson. Big match preview: Brighton & Hove Albion v Yeovil
Oscar Garcia
Win or bust for the Seagulls’ final promotion chances Richard Morris
Brighton head into tonight’s match with Yeovil knowing nothing less than three points will do if they have serious designs on making the play-offs. Monday’s lacklustre home draw with lowly Blackpool – during which the home side mustered just three shots on target - saw the Albion drop out of the top six with two games to go. Reading leapfrogged the Seagulls with a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough and sit one point ahead of the Albion with six points to play for. Oscar Garcia’s charges head to Nottingham Forest on the final day, with Reading hosting promoted Burnley. But the Tricky Trees have been in decent form themselves and have won their last two after previous plunging down the table. Brighton will want to go to the East Midlands with their fate in their hands – meaning a win tonight (Friday) is a must. Yeovil – barring maximum points from their final two games and a huge swing in goal difference – will end the season relegated back to League One but manager Gary Johnson will want his team to put on a show for the club’s loyal following. Perhaps more ominously for home supporters though is the fact
the Seagulls have often struggled against the division’s lowest ranked teams. Monday’s draw meant that in games against the current bottom three Brighton have won just once – an away win at Blackpool. They have taken just one point from two games with relegationthreatened Barnsley – losing 2-1 to the Tykes at home, and struggled to a 0-0 stalemate in the away match with rock-bottom Yeovil. This contrasts significantly with the Albion’s record against the top three – with Oscar’s side having done the double over champions Leicester City and taking four points from games with Burnley. They did lose both games to thirdplaced Derby County but managed a win and a draw with Queens Park Rangers. All that suggests the Albion struggle to open up teams happier to concentrate on defence but flourish against the sides who place more emphasis on attack and therefore leave space in defensive positions for the Seagulls to exploit. The continued absence of creator-in-chief Andrea Orlandi and the stop-start season suffered by William Buckley has hardly helped an Albion team often accused of lacking a cutting edge. Buckley could be back in the starting line-up tonight after a cameo in the draw with Blackpool – with the winger likely to replace

Solly March and set up alongside Kazenga Lua Lua and Jesse Lingard in the trio supporting Leo Ulloa. The defence should remain unchanged despite question marks being raised over Gordon Greer’s distribution on Monday – the Scotland international attempted a team high 11 long balls but was only accurate with three of them and ended with an uncharacteristically low pass success rate of just 65 per cent. Brighton will need to be more accurate, more attacking and more positive to get the win they so desperately need.

I am frustrated, I am after every game where we do not take the three points - but it is amazing to be in the position we are in, bearing in mind what has happened during the season. When you consider that, it is amazing we are still fighting for a place in the top six. “The teams around us are not winning, that shows that it is difficult for them as well. So we will keep on fighting until the end of the season; that is what we have to do. “Dale Stephens took his goal really well, but their equaliser was a soft goal. It was a soft challenge in midfield and then it was too easy for Stephen Dobbie to score.”

Valuing property in a complicated market In the current ‘dynamic’ market, sellers’ expectations from an agent are greater than normal in one area in particular...price. In an everyday market (‘what is that?’ you may ask), an agent will have comparable evidence of similar property sold within the previous 6 months to a year. In a modern town or a town mainly built in a certain period with estates
of similar property, an agent can quite easily find matching property, say 1930s’ built 3 bedroom semis with gardens and garages, tens of them in a nearby area or even the same post code. When the market has a shortage of property and a strong demand as we have now, an agent can probably assume the percentage increase in price will be based on regional averages, say 5-7%.
In such an area and market, the agent and owner can quite easily agree over the asking price and likely sale price. Then comes Brighton and Hove...fishermen’s cottages cheek by jowl with modern purpose built flats, a few yards from early Victorian terraces, many converted into flats and then, only two hundred yards away, a massive array of random size,
Bonetts.co.uk 01273 677365
condition and layout flats; sorry, apartments...no, sorry, mansion flats... converted from seriously grand Regency townhouses. It feels like a lottery. So, where should we start? Firstly it’s down to location... and secondly, it’s down to location, etc,. Locally, you are already in a minefield. For one buyer, a terraced house with impossible parking and a yard is hell; he or she must have detached, garden, and garage; whereas to another, it’s the up close and personal vibe they are desperate for. As agents, we need to identify the typical buyers for different types of property and know pretty well what they will pay to live there. That really is the art; and it is an art, not a science, as we do not have the dozens of similar homes you find in some towns. An agent who has worked in an area for a long time will have a sense for what buyers will pay for certain kinds of property and they should price accordingly. Given the
diverse nature of our property, that really is a lifetime's effort; to be up to speed on prices throughout Brighton and Hove, so we all should admit there are corners of the City where we are not experts. Even the quirky nature of different ends of a single street can create price anomalies...agents need to know this. When you ask agents around, don’t give them your opinion on price or the figure mentioned by the previous agent. Put the agent on the spot and get them to explain their rationale for their figure, what else has sold nearby which compares to yours and dig properly to ensure you are not being flanneled. Their price will need to match up to a surveyor's when you finally get a buyer for the finance to be in place. Are you confident of their confidence? Do you trust them? That needs to be your bottom line. Paul Bonett FNAEA MARLA

Period features, fireplaces and south facing bay windows for that Brighton look .Through lounge, three double bedrooms and an amazing bathroom with a freestanding bath and walk in shower. GAZUMPING AND GAZUNDERING –
Sounds painful and it can be, to your pocket especially… Paul Bonett @Bonetts
Gazumping is when a seller – having agreed a sale – subsequently accepts a higher offer from someone else. Gazumping is not illegal; but is it wrong? Buyers who have been gazumped will tell you it’s a pretty low trick; gazumpers will tell you it’s legal and a testament to market forces. Of course, the decision to accept or not is the sellers’, who might say it ensures they get the best possible price. Until unconditional contracts are exchanged on the sale of a property, it is still effectively ‘available’ and agents, unless told in writing by their client, must continue to market the property… Of course, being gazumped is no joke – particularly if you have already incurred expense on a survey and solicitor’s fees. The conundrum in a busy market;
with not enough property for sale and high demand is: can it be curtailed? Some people say it should be made illegal. But, remember that the same leeway before binding contracts are exchanged which allows the seller to switch offers, also enables a buyer to suddenly put in a lower offer at the last minute: this is the tail wagging the dog… ‘gazundering’. As a buyer, check the property is being taken off the market when your offer is accepted: ask the agent to ask the seller to agree to that in writing. As a seller, only accept an offer you are happy with, then stick with it. The agent’s job is to thoroughly check a buyer’s ability to proceed and only recommend acceptance of an offer when you are as sure as you can be. Of course, once agreed, the shorter the time it takes to exchange contracts, the less opportunity for messing around. In short – both parties, make sure you are organised!

A view from the city As an independent estate agent, Jason Dean is passionate about the local community and its residents. This week Sarah Indranie, one of the directors, talks to Gary O'Reilly. Gary O’Reilly - a former professional footballer spanning three decades, played for Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Birmingham City as a defender. He is currently a TV presenter on the Premier League overseas channel as well as a co commentator and broadcaster.
Gary O'Reilly TV presenter on the Premier League overseas channel 1. What’s your favourite street road and why? It is possibly one of the shortest streets in the city, but for me one of the sweetest. Montpelier Villas is a passage way up to St Michaels church that is gleaming with white stucco villa’s that are elegant and very much at ease in their own space. Being on the edge of the city centre, they are not too close, not too far, just perfect. 2. What’s your favourite building in Brighton and Hove and why? I can imagine the usual suspects always appear for this one, a sweeping terrace, the Royal Pavilion, the Palace Pier, Embassy Court……even the beach huts on Hove’s promenade could get a mention. But I have a soft spot for Hove Library, such a beautiful façade, but with a substance and grandeur to it. I’m equally as struck by its location, surrounded by nothing of note it seems to vanish before your eyes, which is such a shame. 3. What’s your most memorable local event? The Marathon divides my opinion both good and bad. I adore the Fringe for a whole load of reasons, but I think the local event I enjoy the most is the one where my fellow citizens and I take a stroll down the prom, does it for me every time. You take it
RECENTLY SOLD PROPERTIES
at your time and at your pleasure and invariably you meet a friend, so, happy days. 4. What do you bring to your local community and how? I don’t know that I can say I bring anything to my local community, outside of taxes and shopping as locally as I can. 5. If you could make one change to your home to improve its efficiency and make it more environmentally friendly, what would it be?
Goldsmid Road, Hove £259,950 Sold on 1st day for full asking price
Seeing as how I’m about to refurbish a new place, I think I will be trying my hardest to bring as much efficiency to proceedings as possible. Appliances and lights all energy saving, a new boiler to keep up the good work and I shall do my best to use recycled materials as and where possible.

6. What is your opinion of the current local property market? The same word surfaces in every conversation I have with agents “Bonkers” Some agents are mindful of the lessons history has taught them, others are not. Vendors are dictating prices, we have sealed bidding and supply and demand are at odds with each other, so, we having a racing market. Brighton and Hove has long been a desirable place to live and if there are people that want to live here and not enough properties, prices will continue to rise. Will it stop? Yes most certainly, but soon? Not so sure. 7. Has it effected you, if so, how? Yes. The good days are back for the agents, so they don’t have to try too hard to get the sales, in fact some of them are lazy. I would leave my details with agents, (plural) and they would not be registered. As a result I had to employ the services of a “Property Hunter” a new experience for me. Lisa Saxena worked her socks off searching and I found she had a very good eye for seeing the true potential in a space, a big bonus as I was keen to buy and make something new. 8. Inheritance tax – keep or abolish? Get rid!!!

A new approach to family law As of April 2013 Family Law ‘Legal Aid’ experienced a huge overhaul as a result of the Government’s long term strategy to cut public spending. Those who were previously entitled to Public Funding are now highly unlikely to qualify, other than in limited and exceptional circumstances (such as where there has been an allegation of domestic violence). Some people hope encouraging people to deal with matters
themselves will change family law disputes for the better and concentrate separating couples minds on the important issues rather than allowing them to spend public funding on resentful litigation and fighting issues that are not progressive. Others fear that the changes will leave thousands unable to gain proper legal advice and representation and therefore this could allow an ex- partner who
has available financial means to seek the upper hand. Whilst it is possible to act as a litigant in person, the court system works by following a number of set rules and to get the right result it helps if you understand those procedures, appreciate what to expect, and present your information in a relevant manner. To those who may be experiencing significant stress as a result of their family matter, it is essential that

Crosby & Woods solicitors awarded Law Society’s Wills & Inheritance Quality Kitemark Crosby & Woods are very proud to announce that they have been accredited by the Law Society’s Wills & Inheritance Quality Scheme (WIQS). There are only a handful of firms in the region who have been given this much sort after accreditation. Greg Woods, the head of the Private Client department at the firm is warning consumers that when it comes to employing a Will writer they need to distinguish between advisors that are unregulated, uninsured and untrained and those, such as Solicitors, who are. Greg said, “Your Will is one of the most important financial and personal decisions that you will make in your lifetime, but currently there is no regulation surrounding Will drafting so in practice anyone is able to write a Will, holding themselves out as an expert.” “It is extremely important to talk to a solicitor who can make sure that the Will is expressed in a way that is legally watertight and which ensures that your wishes are carried out correctly and in full. It will also ensure that upon death family and any beneficiaries are properly provided for and that the risks of any disputes arising are
kept to the lowest possible level. An experienced solicitor will also be able to advise on complex financial issues such as inheritance tax and trusts planning. Solicitors are all trained, regulated and they are required to have insurance to protect the public.” At the heart of WIQS is the first Law Society standard for delivering tailored Wills and Probate advice. In achieving accreditation, Crosby & Woods underwent an application and very thorough assessment process to demonstrate their adoption of best practice procedures in delivering Wills and Probate advice. This benefits our clients (past, present and future) by ensuring that they understand the issues in preparing a Will or seeking probate advice, and are aware of the options, costs and timescales in order to make a fully informed choice from the outset. To discuss your Will making requirements, or for advice on Estate Planning, Powers of Attorney or Probate & the Administration of an Estate, please contact Greg Woods on 01273 734702 or on greg@crosbywoods.co.uk.
