Revealed: £29m a month for city council services EXCLUSIVE

Brighton and Hove City Council spends something like £778.1 million a year.

Even though the council funds some 800 services, the figures might seem be stupendous. But it may not be surprising.

Yet who receives that money?

Which companies, organisations and suppliers are

paid to keep the city going? To pay for social care, concessionary bus travel, vehicle maintenance, parking enforcement, computer hardware, telecommunications...

The list goes on. And on.

Today, for the first time, Brighton & Hove Independent reveals the 20 organisations companies, suppliers, call them what you will - that got paid the most in March, the last month for which official data is available.

By law, all local authorities are required to publish such information - all contracts worth more than £250 - as "open data".

Every month.

The government intended such transparency to empower a generation of "armchair auditors" - individuals and organisations capable of holding the powerful to account.

It has not happened. And there are many reasons why it has not.

Today, however, Brighton & Hove Independent makes a start.

We will do so in the hope that we can help citizens judge whether or not we are getting value for money. Whether or not our money is being spent wisely - by them, on our behalf.

Who is it? It's the question every Albion fan is asking.

Oscar Garcia’s unexpected resignation has left Tony Bloom, the Brighton and Hove Albion chairman, hunting for a new manager for the second summer in a row.

The highly-rated former Barcelona youth team coach called time on his short spell in the Amex hot seat following the Albion’s disappointing play-off exit at the hands of Derby County.

Most supporters agree Oscar had performed a minor miracle in securing a second successive play-off play at the end of what

had been an injury-plagued Championship campaign but there had been growing grumbles from within certain sections of the Seagulls fan base over the cautious approach adopted by the Spanish head coach.

Albion have already received interest from a host of potential applicants and remain confident a new manager can be found to marshal the club’s resources into a third promotion push in as many seasons.

It is the village pub in the heart of the city. The Prince of Wales - just outside Churchill Square shopping centre - has seen businesses come and go.

But landlord Trace Barnes, 62, and his son, Aron, 33, always try to keep up with the times. Indeed, the Prince of Wales was the first pub to display real-time bus

Journalism course saved at City College A highly-regarded journalism course at City College Brighton and Hove has been saved.

Negotiations between unions and management mean that the

one-year course - recognised by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) will continue in September.

Two fast-track courses, however,

will end. And staff fear that they will, in effect, still be made redundant.

The courses are among those being axed because of the college's financial crisis, which has seen staff and students protesting about "financial mismanagement" and calling for the resignation of Colin Henderson, the former financial director who has been promoted to deputy chief executive.

Your beach needs you! A big clean-up can help protect our city’s finest asset Jason Kitcat @jasonkitcat

The May Bank Holiday weekend, with its predicted sunshine, is set to draw plenty of sun-seekers down to our beach.

Unfortunately, experience has shown that an irresponsible minority do not use the many bins available. Instead, they leave their rubbish behind - making a mess of our beach, ruining the space for others and polluting our water.

This is not unusual. During the busiest weekends in the summer, the amount of rubbish left on our beaches can amount to an extraordinary 10 tonnes a day.

So I am delighted to be taking part in a volunteers’ Big Beach Clean-up after the bank holiday weekend, to raise awareness about the issue.

Drug consumption rooms off the agenda Tim Ridway @RidgwayTim

Plans for drug consumption rooms across Brighton and Hove have been dropped.

The controversial idea of offering addicts a safe place to use heroin, crack, and cocaine was suggested by the Independent Drugs Commission for Brighton and Hove last year.

Supporters believe regular contact would take drug use off the streets and make it easier to monitor, helping to reduce the number of drug-related deaths.

But, after receiving a mixed response from policy-makers and the wider public, the idea has been dropped, with advocates citing legal and budgetary reasons.

The announcement was made as the commission, led by Peter James, the award-winning crime writer, and Mike Trace, a former government adviser on drugs, published its final report on Tuesday.

The report said: “Our specific recommendation for the local authorities to examine the feasibility of opening a consumption room was treated with due seriousness.

“The city council and Sussex Police established a working group that looked at the need, likely impact, legal situation and practical considerations.

“Their conclusion was that a consumption room was not a priority for Brighton and Hove at this time - the working group was convinced by the international evidence on the potential benefit from these facilities, but thought that they would have little impact on the types of factors that were contributing to deaths in the city.

“Members of the working group were also concerned at the cost implications, in a time of budget pressure, and also advice from the

Home Office that opening such facilities would contravene UK law.”

Mr James, the commission chairman, said: “My own personal view is that people are always going to take drugs. Until there is some radical change it’s going to continue to happen.”

He added that 80% of the crime that happened in the city was drugrelated, much of it lower-level crime such as shoplifting, as this was the only way addicts could feed their £50-a-day habits.

However, he said there were “not only legal issues but also budgetary constraints”, adding: “I personally believe that it could be a major step forward.”

Caroline Lucas, the Brighton Pavilion MP, who set up the commission, said that she was pleased that the idea was at least discussed.

Speaking generally, Ms Lucas said that she was pleased that the city’s response to the wider issue had changed since she first brought the body together two years ago.

Key recommendations include a call for more training for people to be able to administer a life-saving overdose antidote, more integrated services for people who have both mental health problems and drug addiction and for a separation between drug services for young people and adults so that younger users do not have to mix with more established users.

Speaking after the meeting, Ms Lucas said: “Drugs policy should be founded on the overriding principle of reducing harm, both for users themselves and for wider society. Any approach has to be led by the evidence about what works in practice.”

For the first time in 100 years, let us all give peace a chance Davy Jones @davyjones4ktown

A century ago, Britain joined a deadly struggle for continental dominance. Nine million soldiers were killed, of which around a tenth were British or from Britain’s colonies. Since then, UK forces have not seen a single year without combat.The centenary of the start of the First World War should shake us to our senses. If UK forces withdraw from Afghanistan on schedule at the end of 2014, we have an opportunity to break this lethal habit: it will be the first time we have not been at war for 100 years.

Britain has the sixth-largest “defence” expenditure in the world, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. We spend around £40 billion a year on it.

In this time of austerity, a fundamental re-think of our priorities is essential. If you struggle to pay your utilities each month, do you really want your tax to be funding high-altitude drones, fighter jets with long-range strike capability, and an outmoded and profoundly immoral nuclear deterrent?

We could free-up much-needed cash by drastically reducing our

arms expenditure. If carefully planned, it need not lead to thousands of workers losing their jobs in British arms industries.

In the 1970s, workers at Lucas Aerospace famously drew up detailed plans for re-deploying their highly-technical skills away from producing combat aircraft in favour of “socially useful” alternatives such as low-energy heat pumps and improved kidney dialysis machines.

Twenty-first-century sociallyuseful alternatives include renewable energy production and promotion of low-carbon living with immense potential to create skilled jobs. The UK is already a world leader in offshore wind farms. We have still got the balance wrong as we teeter on the brink of climatic catastrophe: The Ministry of Defence spent £900 million on research and development for the financial year 2012-13. The Department for Energy and Climate Change’s R&D spend was a paltry £28 million.

“Massive military spending and new investments in modernizing nuclear weapons have left the world over-armed - and peace underfunded,” warned UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon in 2012.

All the while the future horrors of global warming loom: droughts, floods, "extreme weather events", mass species extinction, the spread of disease, and more conflict over

I thought I had seen it about as bad as it gets when travellers - or whatever you want to call them dig in at Stanmer Park.

But passing what is laughingly known as Surrenden Field, what I saw definitely takes the biscuit.

Unbelievably, the poor old park has been completely trashed by a group of people who clearly could not give a tinker's cuss for anyone.

This mindless group have churned up - and completely ruined - what was, until a few weeks ago, an absolutely beautiful area of grassland - a green lung right on the entrance to our city on our premier access route. One of the very first impressions any visitor gets when arriving in the city by car.

Why do we allow it?

I say this bearing in mind that this group from southern Ireland are here in the United Kingdom simply because a few years ago a law was passed in their own country making it illegal to drive

My first point of interest is to no doubt paying huge sums to get ask what they think of the southern our caravans back from the pound.

I can well imagine the outcry if a few of us council-taxpayers decided to rock up and take our holidays in Preston Park. I wonder whether we would be seen as an endangered species trying to protect our chosen way of life.

Would we be provided with bins? And would we get a traveller welfare liaison officer calling round to make sure we were all right?

No. Of course, we would not. We

intensely - or rather much stronger language with the same meaning.

It is apparent that this unwelcome group are seen by the indigenous population as getting them a bad, or worse, name than they have already got.

My second question is: "What do you think of these groups of do-gooders who are constantly advocating travellers' rights?"

This question is usually greeted with hoots of laughter from our endangered species, with the response much too difficult to print without offending the tender ears of readers. I will leave it to the

imagination.

Joking aside, perhaps every council-taxpayer who could, should muster up a caravan or camper van and get together in protest for a while.

Taking it in shifts, perhaps for the odd 500 caravans at a time to occupy Preston Park during the entire summer.

These numpty political types might get the message at last: start listening to the electorate and stop trying to be so politically correct.

Councillors need to remember it is the majority who elect, not the minority.

Mexican exchange A Brighton primary school teacher is taking part in an exchange with a school 5,000 miles away as part of a scheme run by the British Council.

Lauren Griffin, who teaches Class Mexico at the Bilingual Primary School, where the children learn in English and Spanish, is off to a city in Mexico.

A load of bull? Or a star sign that proves astrology right?

What have Oliver Cromwell, Catherine the Great, Lenin, Marshal Tito, Ayatollah Khomeini, Saddam Hussein, Pol Pot, and Hosni Mubarak all got in common, apart from autocratic tendencies? They were all born under the star sign Taurus, the Bull.

I used to be sceptical about astrology, and still find it hard to accept some of its claims.

I was certainly put off by those ludicrous horoscopes one sees in the popular press, which give the impression everyone in a particular sign (one twelfth of the world) is about to meet a tall dark stranger, or come into money, or whatever.

It was mainly Taurus that persuaded me there might be something in this thoroughly unscientific and illogical business after all. (Illogical since, due to the progresssion of the heavens, all the signs

have shifted away from their original positions, as determined in ancient times.) Each zodiacal sign seems to produce its characteristic type, but Taurus strikes me as by far the most distinctive of them.

Taurus runs from April 21 to May 21, so we are currently stamping and snorting our way through it.

In addition to all those autocrats (and Hitler only just misses it, being born on April 20), Taurus seems to produce robust-minded philosophers and ideologues. People who believe they have a formula for explaining or reconstructing the world. Immanuel Kant (April 22), Ludwig Wittgenstein (April 26), Karl Marx (May 5), Sigmund Freud (May 6), John Stuart Mill (May 20) are some.

Taureans tend to be strongwilled, dogmatic, determined in their views. It is often futile to try to reason with them, even when they are patently wrong.

Tony Blair (May 6) is a Taurean.

General Allenby (April 23) was actually nicknamed “The Bull” by his First World War troops,

though I doubt if they knew about his sun sign. Jeremy Paxman (May 11), asking Michael Howard the same question 14 times, and tossing politician after politician from his Newsnight horns, is another who might deserve the sobriquet.

Their often-admirable desire to transform the world can be combined with indifference towards those closer to hand.

Bertrand Russell (May 18) twice went to prison for his views once for opposing the First World War, once for opposing nuclear weapons - yet behaved abysmally towards his own family. Florence Nightingale (May 12), another notable humanitarian, is also said to have been a domestic despot.

Again, while many star signs have their associated physical attributes, the jowly taurine face that many Taureans manifest is particularly distinctive. Saddam (April 28), Golda Meir (May 3), Orson Welles (May 6), Pope John Paul II (May 18), and Pol Pot (May 19) had it; the Queen (April 21), Alan Titchmarsh and David Beckham (both May 2), Michael

Palin (May 5), Vince Cable and Alan Bennett (both May 9) all display it.

A little book on astrology warns that the Taurean’s temper “is not quickly roused, but when it is, it can be frightening: ‘bull in a china shop’ is a good phrase to describe him at such times”. It says Taureans can be possessive and given to jealousy. On the positive side, they have Venus as their ruling planet, making them “warm-natured, very affectionate and sensual”, and seeking “happy

and stable relationships”.

As with any sign, I believe those born under it can learn in time, with insight and practice, to circumvent its inherent limitations and develop its inner strengths, though not many seem to manage this.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering: No, I am an Aries – a headstrong, impulsive, pugnacious (and all the rest of it) ram.

A community learning centre in Brighton is launching a range of new creative taster sessions, day workshops, short courses, and summer schools designed to put a smile on your face - and a pound or two in your pocket.

The new courses are designed not only to improve local residents' sense of wellbeing and synchronise with Brighton and Hove's Happiness Strategy, but also to tap into the growing interest in using creative skills to earn money.

"People who learn a creative skill are increasingly turning them into small businesses, which they can run in the evenings and at weekends," says Jayne Routley, who has been recruited by The Bridge Community Education Centre to design a new range of creative courses for them.

The new workshops, short

courses, and summer schools covering everything from Japanese Raku pottery techniques through to improving your sewing machine skills - start in June.

The initiative will be officially launched at two open days on Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31 (10.30am to 4pm), when visitors will be able to buy handcrafted wares and try their hand getting creative.

The Bridge, in Lucraft Road, Brighton, has already launched a series of two-hour "Twilight" taster sessions, as the first part of this initiative, including one on 'How to start your own small creative business', which ran yesterday (Thursday).

The session was run by Diane Wilson, founder of Lampara, based in Hove, a successful online boutique selling handmade designer lampshades, who shared her own experiences and outlined the basics of business building.

She said: "I realised the only difference between myself and successful business-owners was

they had taken a leap forward and gone ahead and done it.

When I realised this was the only difference - I set to work.

"Taking a small course can literally help turn your ideas into actions. This is how I started to set up my own creative business."

Sofie Franzen, project manager at The Bridge, explained it was already looking at the possibility of running further business sessions and even day-long workshops aimed at people who want to turn a creative skill into a way of earning money. "The aim would be that people can come to us to not only learn creative skills but also the businesses basics that can help turn that skill into an income," she said.

Jayne Ross, chief executive of The Bridge, said: "The great thing about creative courses is that they appeal to a huge range of people.

"Learning a new skill can be really uplifting and we have some fantastic artists working with us on the project. Plus, a growing number of people from all walks

Hits such as Ever Decreasing Circles and Brush Strokes followed, while Larbey branched out on his own to create the Judi Dench vehicles A Fine Romance and As Time Goes By. Tom Hollander Dylan Thomas: A Poet in New York BBC2, 9pm October 27, 2014 marks the centenary of the birth of Dylan Thomas, the Swansea-born poet who is now regarded as a giant of 20th-century literature.

We can expect heaps of programmes about him in the coming months, but getting in first is this drama about his final days in New York before his death at the age of 39 in November 1953. Tom Hollander plays Thomas, and the story begins as he arrives in the Big Apple, en route to Hollywood where he plans to write an opera with Stravinsky.

Fast-forward a month and weekends are fully booked. Why? Because this relaxed Southern Indian street-food café serves some of the finest Indian food in the city.

A joint project between Euan Sey, a former food journalist, and chef Kanthi Thamma, Curry Leaf Café came about after a spare-room advertisement on Gumtree threw these two Indian-food obsessives together.

After years of dreaming, menutailoring and planning, Curry Leaf Café opened its doors, with Euan taking on a creative and marketing role and Kanthi assuming the position of head chef.

Immediately inviting, Curry Leaf Café stands out - midway down Ship Street in Brighton - with a warm orange and bright green exterior. Exposed brickwork, large oak tables, and rustic, shabby-chic chairs await. The college is currently paying thousands of pounds for an auditing firm to go through its accounts. That is the real backdrop against which cuts to staff and provision are being proposed.

According to Lynn Thackway, the principal, and Colin Henderson, the financial director recently promoted to deputy chief executive, staff costs at the college

are too high; but the reality is that teaching costs are the lowest they have ever been. Evidence has also emerged that the governors of the college may have been misled about the college new build: they were told that keeping the current buildings was not a rational option as running costs were too high. Documents obtained by the

unions, however, suggest that these running costs are actually a million pounds less than the figure submitted to the board of governors.

inclusive and caters for the needs of all students. This is why many of us are appalled at the changes that the current management of the college are proposing to make.

It is our view that senior management is using the mantra of “government cuts to core funding” as a smokescreen to obscure other more fundamental changes in the focus and direction of City College. While there is some truth to the claim that colleges face cuts in funding for both 16-18-year-olds and adult courses, these reductions equate to around £350,000 and not the exaggerated figure of £1,5 million that the college says it needs to slash.

So what is the real reason for such drastic measures - measures that will lead to the cutting of course provision, and that will decimate staff numbers?

Perhaps it started in 2010 when City College Brighton and Hove controversially closed the popular Connaught Adult Education Centre in Hove in order to save £300,000.

Now, four years later, staff and students, local politicians and the community have been shocked to learn the college is in the midst of a £1.5 million financial crisis that will make up to 50 staff redundant

Porsche adds extra bits to its Cayman coupe

Joint functionality and barometic pressure may be closely linked

The Cayman GTS delivers 335bhp, reaching 62mph in 4.6 seconds

Porsche has added a new GTS model to the top of the Cayman range which comes with a 15bhp upgrade to 335bhp, some mild styling tweaks and lots of extra kit as standard. It costs £55,397 which makes the car £6,614 more than the Cayman S on which it’s based. The GTS is able to sprint from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds which is 0.3 of a second quicker than a standard Cayman S. So is it worth the extra cash?

Well that depends whether you’d be selecting the added equipment anyway. Take the sports exhaust for example; on an S this would set you back £1,530 and it really is a must-have item because it provides a great mouthpiece for the 3.4-litre flat six engine.

The GTS also gets Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) which is normally £971.

This is something we’d recommend adding to the car anyway as the 10mm lower ride height provides improved agility. In normal mode the ride is compliant enough for cruising round town but at the press of a button you can stiffen the

dampers for a more focused drive.

If you like, you can forego the PASM in lieu of the sports chassis which lowers the car buy a further 10mm but uses fixed rate dampers. You’d pay £689 for this as an option, but really it’s only going to appeal to people who plan to take their Cayman on track regularly.

The GTS also boasts some extra Alcantara bits and pieces in the cabin and features leather on the dash and door tops as standard.

This extra hide really lifts the car’s interior luxury to another level and is why, on a Cayman, we would always recommend upgrading to the optional extended leather pack even though it’s £1,740. However, this is where the must-have additions end.

Yes the GTS may have the £546 sports plus seats with their added bolstering and partial electric operation, but you don’t really need them. And if the £320 smoked rear light clusters and £447 directional headlamps weren’t standard we certainly wouldn’t miss them either. Yes,

That old wives’ tale of “if the cows are lying down, a rainstorm is imminent” comes to mind.

But maybe we can look closer to home, away from the farmyard, to prophesy the occurrence of rain.

As unlikely as it may seem, there is now strong research into how arthritic joints react to rain, cold, sleet, adverse weather, in general, which suggests that people suffering from arthritis are as close to a barometer as anything.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition affecting joints in the body, most commonly the joints of the lower back, neck, hips, knees, shoulders and hands.

In healthy joints, a space is present between the bones that comprise the joint and, over time, these spaces narrow resulting in the bone surfaces grinding together. Which causes pain.

So what happens to these joints before and during rain?

There has been an extensive amount of research into the relationship between atmospheric conditions and arthritic joint pain. A drop in barometric pressure, which refers to the atmospheric conditions, occurs before the onset of a rainstorm and is the most likely explanation for the changes in joint functionality.

Sussex Sharks start their Natwest T20 Blast campaign tonight (Friday) against arch rivals Surrey at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground in what is the first of seven home T20 matches.

Five of these take place on a Friday night – leading the club to dub Friday nights Shark Night. And they have a raft of add-ons planned in their bid to make the Sharks and T20 the hottest ticket in town.

Aside from the big-hitting, floodlit cricket action there will also be live music at the front of the Herbalife South West Stand, a happy hour after the match with reduced drinks, prizes in each programme a catch the cash competition in the interval and a free nets session for Sharks fans aged six to 16.

The Fuses – a local rock band who are set to release their first single last this summer – are the first band to be booked in and to make T20 games even more attractive, Sussex are offering a £5 discount on £25 tickets if purchased in advance as well as free entry for under-fives.

Nevertheless, it will be on the field where the real action takes place – and ultimately where Sussex Sharks will be judged this season.

And their chances will hinge heavily on the shoulders of returning Yasir Arafat. The vastly experienced Pakistani seamer was part of the Sharks side which won the T20 tournament in 2009 in one of several successful spells in Sussex-by-the-Sea. This time round he is concentrating purely on the 20 over form of the game – warming up for tonight’s match with an outing for the Second 11 earlier this week in one of the team’s two T20 matches against the MCC Young Cricketers.

“I am really looking forward to it.

But can the Sharks reach – and win – finals day later this season?

Arafat certainly thinks so – even if he isn’t making any predictions just yet. “In the south group there are a lot of good teams. Surrey are a good

side and Somerset have always been a good side – there are a lot of good teams but it is too early to say [who will be Sussex’s biggest challenge] because any team can win the T20.”

Sharks fans will be hoping Arafat will line up alongside another of the county’s former Surrey men.

Chris Jordan has hit top form since swapping Surrey for Sussex – something Arafat puts down the excellent coaching set-up in Hove – and has recently been called up to the England squad for the national team’s T20 match with reigning world champions Sri Lanka on Tuesday and for the first three matches of their One-Day series against the same team.

Supporters wanting to catch a glimpse of the current T20 champions need not head to The Kia Oval. Sussex entertain Sri Lanka this Sunday at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground in a hotly-anticipated T20 clash – with plenty of tickets still available.

Hunt for manager starts again Richard Morris

For the second season in a row Brighton and Hove Albion ended their campaign by losing in the play-offs and losing their manager.

Last summer it was Gus Poyet and Crystal Palace, this time round it was Oscar Garcia and Derby County. One was suspended for gross misconduct, the other resigned in the wake of second leg disappointment.

Both had voiced their concerns over the difficulty in competing financially in the Championship – with Poyet talking about ceilings being hit and Oscar arguing Albion were left weaker after the January departures of Ashley Barnes and Liam Bridcutt. In fact, the Spaniard made specific mention of the imbalance in available funds among divisional rivals because of parachute payments to relegated sides in his post-resignation statement released by the club.

The chief similarity though is that for the second time in 12 months, Brighton are in need of a new man at the helm.

Chairman Tony Bloom says the Seagulls are confident of landing a top candidate and says

he has already been inundated by applicants interested in the vacant Amex hot seat.

It certainly seems an appealing job for any out of work manager.

The club has managed two successive play-off finishes, boasts the highest average attendances outside the Premier League and has a new £30million training complex nearing completion.

However, sky-high television payments to top flight clubs and payments to relegated teams will make it difficult for the Albion to compete financially with their rivals. For example, recently relegated Cardiff City were given more than £62million as part of the Premier League’s TV deal this season. Brighton on the other hand received around £5million.

Parachute payments of almost £60million are also given to relegated teams over the next four seasons, presuming they don’t regain their top flight status.

Together with strict Financial Fair Play spending restrictions the chasm which exists between relegated clubs and existing Championship sides put the Albion in a difficult position when competing at the top end of the division.

Nevertheless, the Albion are

hopeful of finding a new manager who can steer the Seagulls towards another promotion push.

Mr Bloom paid tribute to departing Oscar – who had to navigate a difficult injury list in his debut season in England. He said: “We are extremely grateful to Oscar for his efforts this past year, and for providing us with another exciting and memorable season at the club.”

And it was a sentiment shared by chief executive Paul Barber, who added: “On behalf of the club, I would like to thank Oscar for his efforts and to wish him all the very best for the future.

The chairman and the board will now begin the search for Oscar’s successor.”

Oscar himself said: “The club has been aware of my thoughts for several weeks and during this time I have had discussions with both the chairman and chief executive. I have enjoyed my time with the club but, although I do not have any immediate plans, I have decided to move on.

The six Seagulls that have been shown the door Brighton and Hove Albion might not have a manager in place but the squad re-shaping has started already.

The Albion confirmed this week six first team players would not be offered new contracts – with Andrea Orlandi the most surprising name on the list of departures.

Injury restricted Orlandi to just 16 games this campaign but in the previous season, under Gus Poyet, the midfielder led the Seagulls in terms of assists – with 11 compared to second placed Will Buckley’s eight. He was also responsible for some stand-out moments, including a beautifully accomplished finish against Newcastle United in the FA Cup. Goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak was also told he would not be offered a new deal but this should not come as a surprise to Seagulls fans as the Polish stopper had previously hinted he may look elsewhere when his contract expired.

Back-up ‘keeper Peter Brezovan, Spanish pair David Lopez and David Rodriguez and injuryplagued striker Will Hoskins have also been shown the door, alongside development squad prospects Grant Smith and Courtney Richards.

The departures leave the Seagulls searching for a new number one and possibly half a dozen or more first team squad members amid rumours that both Buckley and Leo Ulloa will be the subject of substantial Premier League interest over the coming weeks.

It is highly competitive and it is made up of a wide range of clubs with very different budgets.

Parachute payments for eight of the clubs in the league and new Financial Fair Play rules make it even harder. Despite these issues,

I feel we have performed well.

As such, I am incredibly proud of the players - they have given everything for me, the club, and you, our fans. I have also been pleased to have been able to help a number of the club’s young players develop and progress into the first team, and I hope they will play many, many games for Brighton and Hove Albion in the future.
