WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES Brighton & Hove Independent unveils data-visualisation prize Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy In a digital, data-rich world, the complaints about information overload are frequently heard. And so are the moans about how "they" never tell us who is doing what. Or what is going on. And - crucially - where does the money go. In Brighton and Hove - and in cities across the country - the release of "open data" can help answer our questions and, at the very least, inform our concerns. Last week, we published an initial attempt at helping citizens understand how Brighton and Hove City Council spends its money. Correction: Our money. Today, we go a step further, with the publication of the names of companies and organisations that last month received more than £32 million in payments. To be precise: 7,878

transactions, with a total net value of £32,864,844. The information is made public every month. The law now requires it. But not many of us have the time, inclination, or expertise to make sense of it. The data relating to council payments last month extends to a spreadsheet with more than 140,000 “cells”, or bits of information. If you study them carefully, and laboriously, you identify 49 companies and organisations - let us call them "suppliers" that received more than £100,000 each last month. In total, these 49 suppliers received £15.3 million - or 47% of all council payments. Did they give value for money? Who knows? But publishing the data is a start for those who wish to find out. There is more: 2,484 transactions - with a total value of

About 400 million citizens in the European Union have the vote. The current European elections are the second-biggest democratic event in the world; the biggest is the Indian general election, with an electorate 814 million. Turnout in Brighton and Hove seemed, as usual, slow yesterday - as this photograph of the polling station in Elm Grove shows. About one in three of us in the United Kingdom are expected to exercise our democratic right. By Sunday, we will know the 751 MEPs who will take up their seats in July and rule us for the next five years.

A tale of two pubs

Caroline Lucas, the Green MP, has backed The Rose Hill Tavern; the lease and contents of The Blind Tiger are on the market for £150,000

Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy They have seen the best of times; they have seen the worst of times. It is, we are told, the age of community; it is, we are certain, the age of music. So why are two of Brighton and Hove's most venerated venues - one a traditional community pub, the other a stage for talented musicians - facing extinction? The Rose Hill Tavern, in Rose Hill Terrace, closed on Sunday (May 18) - before winning a six-month reprieve when the city listed it as an "asset of community value". Over the same weekend,The Blind Tiger, the well-known music venue in Grand Parade, closed. Its demise caused - in part, at least - because of complaints from neighbours about the noise generated by the many bands that performed there. More than 13,000 have signed an online petition in protest. Calling on Brighton and Hove City Council to rescind a noiseabatement noise - and the threat of fines up to £20,000 - the petition states: "Brighton and Hove is a vibrant city with a rich, diverse history of culture and live music. However, over the past eight years we have lost a number of iconic live music venues in the city, some due to issues that could well have been sorted out with the full cooperation of all parties. "Due to noise complaints by one person who moved into a flat above a bar with a long history of live music, we are losing another live music venue. We are all entitled to peace and quiet, but moving into a flat above a live music venue and complaining about the noise is like moving to Spain and complaining

it's too hot." The council was quick to respond, insisting it had received "numerous noise complaints" from local residents "for several years". Complaints have been received from residents in North Road, Grand Parade and Marlborough Place, the council said: "By law we must investigate noise complaints made to the council. We also have a legal duty to serve a noise abatement notice on those responsible when a noise nuisance is identified. "On March 14 2014 a noise abatement notice was served on the leaseholders who operate Blind Tiger following complaints about noise from live music. The business was given two months to comply with the notice. This gave time for assessments to take place and any necessary sound insulation work to be undertaken. Blind Tiger chose to stop operating at the venue when the abatement notice period ran out on May 14 2014. The council has not closed the venue." Yesterday, a statement appeared on The Blind Tiger's Facebook page, suggesting the end is not quite nigh: "We have a meeting with the apparently Tiger-friendly Green Party chair (Councillor Stephanie Powell) and vice-chair (Councillor Lizzie Deane) of licensing at Brighton and Hove City Council tomorrow at the town hall, to see if anything positive can come from this farrago. Thanks again for the shows of support!" The situation was also unclear at The Rose Hill Tavern: relief surviving even in the shadow of doom. The facts are known: Enterprise Inns, the owner of the 144-yearold pub, put it on the market. And Fleurets, a firm of chartered surveyors with an office in

Boundary Road, Hove, put up a “for sale” sign outside. Caroline Lucas, the Green MP, was among those who attended last orders and administered last rites. Or so they thought. But Brighton and Hove City Council has approved an application to delay the sale of the pub - made by the Save the Rose Hill Tavern Action Group. The decision gives the group six months to put together a bid - although Enterprise is under no obligation to accept it. The company reportedly wants to turn the property into flats in what is an up-and-coming area. Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty, chair of the council’s planning Committee said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to move quickly to grant the pub the community asset status it deserves. “The Rose Hill is a charming public house with many interesting features, attested by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). “I’m happy to say that the public house will now also be considered for our local list of non-designated heritage assets. “Pubs are still at the heart of the community in our city and although we haven’t seen the vast quantity of pubs close that other cities in the south east have faced, I have a genuine concern that we are at a tipping point. “I look forward to seeing proposals from the campaign group for keeping the Rose Hill Tavern in community hands." In addition to The Rose Hill Tavern, Fleurets has several other Brighton pubs on its books, including The Windmill, in Upper North Street, and the Brewery Tap in North Road.

Greater Brighton Economic Board gets to work to bring benefits to everyone across our region Jason Kitcat @jasonkitcat

An ambitious programme of future work and investment was recently agreed at the first gathering of the Greater Brighton Economic Board. This board brings together political and business leaders from across our city region to build on our strengths and improve our economy. After all, our lives do not stop at local authority boundaries, so neither should councils’ and businesses’ planning. We share many residents, visitors, and business with our neighbours: Lewes, Adur, Worthing and Mid-Sussex. Indeed, our shared economy is not just of regional, but also of national significance. So, through the board, these local councils, our city’s two

universities, City College and partnerships representing the companies investing in the area will oversee a six-year programme of investment in jobs, housing, business and skills support. It will bring more than £170 million

The Argus threatened by strike ballot about redundancies, pay, and transfers out of city Frank le Duc @BHcitynews

Journalists at The Argus newspaper are to take part in a strike ballot starting next week. Their vote has been co-ordinated with four other divisions of Newsquest, the company that owns the Sussex newspaper, by the National Union of Journalists (NUJ). The union said it was holding the strike ballots “in response to redundancy threats, pay freezes, and plans to transfer staff and work away from local communities.” It added: “If the proposals go ahead, the company will cut staff with decades of experience and skill, risk editorial quality, and create heavy workloads for those who remain. “NUJ members included in the ballot have only had one pay rise in the last six years.” Staff at The Argus offices in Crowhurst Road, Hollingbury, held three strikes in late 2010 and early 2011 over job losses in Brighton. Sub-editing for the Sussex newspaper work was moved to Southampton, in Hampshire. The sub-editing is now due to move again to Weymouth, in Dorset.

The NUJ quoted one staff member who has already been moved to the new way of working as saying: “Each day, every day, problems continue to beset us that involve more and more work for less and less people. “The new staff have not been properly trained and are paid peanuts.” The union said: “The templates used for the new system and the associated training offered are not fit for purpose.” Laura Davison, NUJ national organiser, said: “There is a real feeling of enough is enough across Newsquest chapels. We’ve actually had other centres ringing up wanting to ballot too. “Cost-cutting is forcing out dedicated and experienced staff with little compensation to the detriment of readers and local communities. “In the south there is concern about how the proposals are impacting on part-time workers, largely women, whose working hours don’t appear to fit conveniently into Newsquest’s concept of efficiency. “For those who stay it means frozen pay, long hours and heavy workloads especially when other vacancies are persistently unfilled. “There is also concern that in the post restructure world one

of the new roles proposed (in Brighton) merges both editorial and commercial work, jeopardising journalistic integrity.” Jane Kennedy, NUJ assistant organiser, added: “We have a great deal of evidence to show that the system is not working and that the pressure being put on remaining staff is unacceptable and

unsustainable. “We call on Henry Faure Walker, CEO of Newsquest, to halt this process and meet with the NUJ to find a better way forward. “The current plans are destructive and unnecessary, they waste the skills and talents of our hardworking members and the existing proposals should be reconsidered.”

The Argus and its owner Newsquest are ultimately owned by Gannett, the American media corporation. Frank le Duc is the founder and editor of Brighton and Hove News. For more information visit: www.brightonandhovenews.org

Author offers masterclass in historical fiction to aspiring novelists in Brighton and Hove ISABELLE GODDARD, the author of six Regency novels, will be running a day's historical-fiction writing masterclass at the Old Ship Hotel on Sunday, June 15. She tells Brighton & Hove Independent why anyone can learn to write. Why are you heading to the Old Ship Hotel? Because it is so old! Nearly 500 years, I think. And it features in one of my Regency novels.

What first inspired you to write? I’ve always written in some form or another - short stories as a child, poems as a teenager, a family diary - but it wasn’t until my workload decreased that I started to think I might be able to write a full-length novel.

Author Isabelle Goddard – real name Maureen Stenning – will run her masterclass at the Old Ship Hotel, on Brighton's seafront, for writers of all levels

the name of Merryn Allingham, though, and the books are longer, around 90,000 words and set in different periods - The Crystal Cage in Victorian London and a trilogy in India in the 1930s and 1940s. I love the research, though.

Three recent novels: Love’s Triangle, The Major’s Guarded Heart, and Unmasking Miss Lacey

What makes you sit down in the morning and get writing? A kind of compulsion, I think, to get back into the fictional world I’m creating and set my characters going again. How long does it take you to write a novel - from idea to publication? Roughly six months. It depends on the kind of novel I’m writing. The six Regency romances I’ve published as Isabelle Goddard are around 70,000 words – and, as I’ve a very good knowledge of the period, the historical research I had to do was fairly limited. I’m currently writing under

Do you think it is possible for anyone to write a book? I do. Writing is as much a craft as throwing pots or carving wood - and everyone has to learn the necessary skills no matter how wonderful their imagination. Once you’ve got those under your belt, add in hard work and perseverance, and you’ll get there! Will your masterclass benefit all levels of writers? That’s certainly what I’ll be aiming for. The great joy of an intensive day like this is that you work with a group of people who, though they may be at different stages in the writing journey, share your passion. It means that everyone learns something, including me. What do you most want attendees to walk away with? I think the biggest barrier to

writing is a lack of belief in yourself. I suffered from it for years. As a lecturer in English literature, I felt that whatever I wrote could never come near the deathless prose I was teaching. And, of course, it couldn’t. I had to learn that I had my own voice and then develop the confidence to use it. This is what I’d like attendees to take away with them. What gives you most satisfaction in your writing? The creative satisfaction of seeing a new world appear from beneath my fingertips and the personal satisfaction of hearing from readers that they’ve really enjoyed one of my books. What would be the best advice you would give to a writer, or a would-be writer? I’d just say: “Believe in yourself. Even if you just set aside half-anhour a day to write - it all mounts up. You can do it.” To book a place at Isabelle Goddard's “Past Perfect!” workshop, visit: www.writestars.co.uk. Telephone: 020 3078 7825; email info@writestars.co.uk. Culture secretary calls in to receive latest lowdown on local TV channel Tim Ridway @ridgwaytim

Sajid David, the secretary of state for culture, took a trip behind the scenes of Latest TV, Brighton and Hove's new television channel during a trip to the south coast on Wednesday. The Conservative frontbencher took time out from his busy schedule to find out how things are progressing as the channel prepares to launch on Freeview Channel 8 this summer. After seeing how work to turn a music venue into a TV studio was coming along, Mr Javid said he

was impressed by the ingenuity and passion that was going into making sure local television will be a success. He said: "This Government is committed to local television and it was great to be able to come and see at first hand the exciting plans Latest TV have here in Brighton and I look forward to the channel going live later in the year. "Having witnessed the innovative, fresh ideas on display at the Latest, and with the dedication and hard work of the reporters, producers and camera crew, I am certain it will be a success." Latest TV was one of a handful of companies to win a licence when the government announced it

would be rolling out local television across the country. With a commitment to champion the city across the country and a "you make it, we show it" promise for any content produced in the area, the channel has received support from across Brighton and Hove. The channel will launch in July and will broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week,

showing a mixture of news, sport, entertainment, property, music, feature-length films, and a lot more. Mr Javid was given a tour of the studio in Manchester Street, Brighton, by channel directors and staff. Angi Mariani, director of Latest Media, said: "It was a real honour for the culture secretary to visit us today. "Things are moving along at great speed but can't wait to get started and broadcasting on Freeview Channel 8 this summer. "We're sure we can produce a channel that the people of Brighton

and Hove will be proud to call their own." Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby, who joined Mr Javid on the visit, said: “I have supported the concept of a local television station for Brighton from the outset, so it is very pleasing to see the progress that has been made as we approach the launch date. "Brighton is the ideal location for a local television station with a vibrant culture and I am sure Latest TV will thrive." Tim Ridgway is head of news for Latest TV. The city itself glows from the page and is a very real character in this fantastic book. It is a city of faith and optimism and reinvention. I did a spot of filming for BBC 4 with Julie Burchill recently, to talk about her new book "Unchosen" - and about The Bookish Supper Society, where she is appearing next month. After the rigours of facing the camera was over, she gave me one of her favourite books. I thought I had not read it, as I glanced at the cover. But then when I got home and opened it, I realised that, of course, I had. It was the different cover that threw me. Julie told me that one of the many, many reasons that she loved Israel was that it was only in the sun that she "got" the concept of Bauhaus architecture. And this wonderful book is partly about that, too. Set in 1946, it is the story of Evelyn Sert, a hairdresser from Soho, who sets sail for Palestine

Maxmatt winner Suzuki has announced another winner of its competition which ran recently as part of Suzuki’s “Good Neighbour” campaign. Julia Reynolds, the latest winner of Suzuki’s #giveanscross competition, collected her new S-Cross SZ5 from Suzuki’s Maxmatt dealership in Hove. Entrants were not eligible to win a car themselves; but could nominate a relative or friend they thought really deserved to be given an S-Cross via Facebook or Twitter. Julia, who works as a nurse manager for the NHS was nominated by Adrian Cowdry, a close family friend who had been suffering from a serious illness. Adrian pulled through thanks to Julia’s razor-sharp medical instinct and close supervision during his time in hospital. She said: “My family and I are really very grateful to Adrian for nominating me to win this fantastic new car; I’m glad I was in the right place at the right time

to help him when he was so ill; we all look forward to driving our new S-Cross very much although I shall be the main keeper of the key of course!” The competition - with five cars being given away - had more than 36,000 entries on Facebook and 6,500 on Twitter. All winners were selected by an independent adjudicator.

All S-Cross models are highly equipped as standard including seven airbags, ESP, Tyre Pressure Monitoring, 16-inch Alloy wheels and air conditioning. The top of the range SZ5 model is equipped with panoramic electric twin sliding roof, leather upholstery, HID projector headlamps and satellite navigation with DAB audio.

Four properties in Brighton and Hove have been searched by officers from Sussex Police and the South East Counter Terrorist Unit under the Terrorism Act 2000. One of the properties searched was the family home, in Saltdean, of 18-year-old Abdullah Deghayes, who is believed to have been killed in fighting in Syria last month. Abdullah’s uncle - Libyan-born Omar Deghayes, 44 - was held without trial at Guantanamo Bay for five years.

Pupils at a Brighton school baked hundreds of cakes and sold them to raise funds for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS). The pupils at Hamilton Lodge School and College for Deaf Children raised almost £260 to mark Deaf Awareness Week. The cake sale included awareness-raising designs relating to sign language, such as hands and ears. Graham Sheppard, the principal, said: “The cakes looked great and tasted delicious. No wonder they sold out so quickly.”

The first images of what the new youth hostel in Brighton will look like have been released by the Youth Hostel Association. The hostel, which is accepting bookings in advance of it opening in October, is taking over the former four-star Royal York Hotel. The refurbishment is intended to be sympathetic to many of the building’s original features.

Courtship study Females are more likely to want to mate if they have been “wined and dined” first, according to researchers who include an evolutionary biologist at Sussex University. Their study of insects also suggested that males who expect sex without first offering their partner a tasty meal are likely to get a good kicking from angry females. Gift-giving is apparently common practice in the insect world, but entomologists continue to debate why this practice evolved.

Five pubs, clubs and bars in Brighton have been caught selling drink to under-age teenagers. Sussex Police said that it would step up checks on licensed premises selling alcohol to children in the light of concerns. The venues caught serving alcohol to minors include: Synergy, Middle Street; The Royal Pavilion Tavern, Castle Square; The Fishbowl, East Street; and Molly Malone’s, West Street.

The organisers of the Kemptown Carnival have started an online campaign to raise £3,000 to secure the event’s future. The carnival, which is due to take place on Saturday, June 7, is one of Brighton’s biggest free community street festivals. To help cover the costs for this year’s event, the organisers have started a campaign on Kickstarter, the crowdfunding website, more than 25 people have already pledged a total of over £1,000.

William Hague, the foreign secretary, has visited Hove. He was met by Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove, along with a number of candidates and constituents. Voters discussed foreign policy issues with Mr Hague, including the British response to the kidnapping of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls, immigration, and a range of issues related to the European elections.

Violence

Paying the price Who pays the price for living with violence? We all do. That was the message of an event - organised by Rise UK, the domestic abuse charity working across Brighton and Hove - attended by nearly 150 people at the Sallis Benney Theatre on Sunday. Chaired by Polly Toynbee, the Guardian journalist, panellists were James Rowland, a Brighton and Hove City Council officer; Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion; Purna Sen, the Labour parliamentary candidate

for Brighton Pavilion and a trustee of Rise UK; Julie Graham, the actress; and Holly Dustin, manager of the End Violence Against Women Coalition. Purna Sen (pictured) said: “One in three women experience violence in their lifetimes. That’s every third woman you pass in the street or see in a shop, with whom you work or go to a concert. Who pays the price for living with violence? Trees

Buswatch concern Brighton Area Buswatch, representing bus-users, has raised concerns about “tree beds” in Queen’s Road (pictured top-left), installed as part of the Brighton Station Gateway scheme. The watchdog was involved in planning this scheme along with Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company. One of the main objectives was to increase the pedestrian space by narrowing the road width. It has complained, however, that the tree beds - which allegedly were not

discussed in planning meetings use all the extra pavement space to create an obstruction; it has contrasted them with how trees are used in Western Road (belowleft). Buswatch said the beds are positioned where buses set down passengers, close to the pavement edge, forcing bus-drivers to open their doors in the middle of the road if they cannot park between the tree beds. It said this will disrupt traffic and disabled users, parents with buggies, and elderly passengers, who will find it difficult or impossible to step off buses.

One child of Brighton is honoured while another is sadly overlooked Graham Chainey

He already had his name on a bus. Now he has a shiny blue plaque on his birthplace. Frank Bridge - composer, pacifist, teacher, and mentor of Benjamin Britten - was born at 7 North Road, Brighton, in 1879. The plaque, complete with caricature image by John Minnion, was unveiled two weeks ago. Additionally, Bridge has been flavour of the month at this year’s Brighton Festival and Fringe concerts, with numerous performances of his works. All credit to the organisation Moot (Music of Our Time) for bringing him this overdue recognition in his home city, and for their efforts to rescue his music from neglect. The tenth of 12 children, Bridge came from a workingclass background. His father was originally a lithographer who, in middle age, changed career to become a peripatetic violin teacher and music director of the Empire Theatre music hall in New Road, where he conducted the orchestra each evening. He taught Frank the violin from the age of six; in his teens, Frank played in the orchestra under his father’s baton, helped arrange music, and even stood in when his father was absent. This gave him a very useful practical grounding; in later years, he was known as the “Ambulance Conductor”, for his willingness to deputise at short notice. Frank was educated at a school in York Place and at the excellentsounding Brighton School of Music. At 17, he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music. His best-known work, the delightfully-atmospheric orchestral suite “The Sea” - with its four movements depicting, in turn, a

Constance and David Garnett, in 1903

summer morning seascape, sea foam along the shore, moonlight on the sea, and finally a storm at sea - was composed at Eastbourne in 1911. This was the same town, curiously, where Claude Debussy, just six years earlier, had composed his own suite “La Mer”. Young Britten was so “knocked sideways” when he first heard “The Sea” that he became Bridge’s one and only composition pupil. The work’s influence can be detected in Britten’s own later “Four Sea Interludes” (and the influence of Bridge’s pacifism in Britten’s own anti-war sentiments). So there is a kind of line of marine inspiration through Bridge from Debussy to Britten. “The Sea” was most recently performed in Brighton on March 30 at the Dome by the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra. Other works that have had recent Brighton performances include his piano sonata, a string quartet, and works for viola and piano and for piano trio. Another, the cello sonata of 1917, is a searching work in which Bridge evolves from his prewar English lyricism to a darker, more despairing style. It is one of his undoubted masterpieces. (If you missed the performance at St Nicholas Church, a terrific rendition by Rostropovich can be found on YouTube.) And there is still time to hear his “Three Improvisations for Left Hand” (1918), composed for a pianist who had lost his right arm in the war, to be performed at St Nicholas Church on Sunday (May 25). Well, that’s Frank Bridge sorted. Meanwhile, the slightly older Constance Garnett (1861-1946), the great translator of Russian classics, who did so much to bring Tolstoy, Turgenev and Dostoevsky to an English-language readership, languishes with neither a bus nor a plaque to her name. Born at 58 Ship Street (currently an Italian restaurant), she went to school in Brighton, married in

Brighton, and gave birth in Brighton (at 40 Buckingham Place) to the equally-distinguished novelist and member of the Bloomsbury Group, David Garnett (1892-1981). Is there anyone out there willing to do for the Garnetts what Moot has done for Bridge? Graham Chainey is a freelance writer living in Brighton and Hove Frank Bridge was born at 7 North Road, Brighton, in 1879

The Mid Summer Ball 2014 approaches

Report highlights a record number of new companies A record number of new companies were started last year in and around Brighton and Hove, according to a report by Duport, the business consultancy. Nearly 4,000 companies were formed in areas with BN1, BN2, BN3, BN41, BN42 and BN45 postcodes. Duport said that 1,965 companies were formed in the Brighton area, which also includes Portslade, Southwick and Poynings. 1,900 companies were formed in Hove. The consultancy report said that 1,224 companies closed in Brighton last year, compared with 1,084 in 2012. In Hove, 767 companies were dissolved, compared with 662 in 2012. Duport’s league table of net business growth by town in 2012 - comparing the number of companies formed minus the number dissolved - listed Hove in 18th place and Brighton in 44th place. The report said: “Over the course of the year, 1,965 new companies

were registered in Brighton - more than any other year on record and a 6% rise on the previous year. “The city’s increasing popularity with tourists from both the UK and abroad could be the reason behind so many new company formations.” Peter Valaitis, Duport's managing director, said: “Tourism has been key to the economy of Brighton for a long time and the increased number of visitors we are seeing presents all sorts of opportunities for entrepreneurs. “With such a vibrant tourist industry and so many unique attractions, it’s little surprise so many new businesses are starting up in the area.” The Duport report for Brighton and Hove also included the BN50, BN51, BN52 and BN88 postcodes, which cover a small number of business addresses in Fishersgate, Peacehaven, and Newhaven.

Southern Water launch campaign Weekend water zorbing to save our sewers This month, hundreds of newly recruited Sustainability Agents have taken part in a mission to help save our sewers from a fate worse than poo. Every Saturday throughout May, Sustainability Agents’ meet at the Theatre Royal in New Road, Brighton. Here they receive instructions about their mission from Secret Agent P. Prince Regent Swimming Complex – operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council – is reporting that its new weekend zorb sessions are proving a huge hit as people literally have a ball in the pool. The zorb is a single layered inflatable ball. The zorb ball takes one person and the idea is to crawl, walk or run inside the ball to propel it across the water. “Most people have trouble standing up initially until they get the hang of it: the trick is to tread as lightly as possible and spread your weight evenly,” advises Jon Hodgson, Freedom Leisure General Manager. Zorbing is an exhilarating experience. It can be enjoyed

by swimmers at Prince Regent aged eight and older for just £1 a go (in addition to the swimming entry fee). Each turn lasts three minutes – which is long enough! Prince Regent Swimming Complex has three zorbs which can be used in the pool simultaneously. The sessions run every Saturday & Sunday from 2.00pm – 3.30pm in the Flexi Pool. “Zorbing is great fun but it challenges your balance and co-ordination,” says Jon Hodgson, Freedom Leisure General Manager. “Once you’re inside the giant inflatable ball bouncing across the water it’s very difficult to control and mayhem and laughter are to be expected. Even if you’re clever enough to steer straight, the chances are you’ll be bumped off course by others in the pool – which is where the fun lies for zorbers and spectators.” The zorb sessions are fully supervised by qualified lifeguards and spectators are welcome to enjoy the fun. A unique time There are certain times of year when I feel incredibly lucky to live in Sussex and May is definitely one of them. The sun starts to make an appearance, the Brighton Festival always provides something new and stimulating and I always try and go on at least one Bluebell Walk. I never tire of how visually stimulating, relaxing and magical a walk through a carpet of bluebells can be. There are few things as evocative of a Sussex spring day than a wander through ancient woodland covered in bluebells. Of course we are spoilt in England, it is home to half of the world’s total population of bluebells but we are particularly blessed in the Sussex. Our many and varied Bluebell trails regularly feature in Top Ten Lists of where to spot these special flowers. Not only are bluebells beautiful and vivid but for me they are a poignant flower. The fact they grow in the shade and you can only see them for a very brief period makes them particularly precious. So this weekend as I walked across a bright blue carpet of flowers in Arlington it got me thinking about time and how amazing things can happen. As a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator I work with couples who are separating – they are giving up on their relationship. Often things have been in a dark place

for a long time. I get them to see that with work they can come out of this dark place and go on to something better. Where these couples have children I help them see that they might be giving up on the romantic relationship but they can’t give up on being parents. I also help them understand that divorce is not a one off event it is a process. The legal separation of course is time bound; but the actual moving and growing varies from couple to couple. As a Mediator I will often see couples months or even years after their separation. I can continue to help resolve disputes over any of the general issues faced by separating couples, or very specific issues such as arrangements for any children. Staying neutral I will help couples identify those issues they can and can’t agree on and help them to try and reach agreement. Parenting after parting is hard it takes commitment to give up negative ways of interacting that cause damage to children. But it can be done. Like the Bluebells out of the dark can come incredible things. But unlike the Bluebells you don’t just get a short period in which to do this – with support separated parents will keep on growing and keep on learning.

FaceBook and Twitter

– waste of time or great communication tool? I pondered the heading for this article and assume only a small number of people will go beyond the heading and most of the rest will pull the plug at the end of this para…. There is a knee-jerk reaction from some that Facebook and Twitter are getting in the way of real communication and interfering with our relationships; and, what’s more, they have no social benefit. I’m not so sure. My wife and kids (grown up) think I spend much too much time on social media and, whenever they look at me, I’m checking my ‘phone. There is a grain of truth in that but I’m having treatment!! I imagine that when Caxton invented the printing press, there were luddites who hated it; when the telephone came along, lots of people refused to have one; the

same goes for the wireless and then the goggle box!! Of course, the advent of the internet and instant communication completely revolutionised our approach to the world…it suddenly shrunk. On the whole, we realise that all these communications media have their uses and we wouldn’t want to be without at least some of them. In our house, Radio 4 goes on first thing in the morning and only ever goes off to be replaced by R3 or R6 Music. One could call that an obsession, even if it is sometimes background and we tune in and out. Isn’t that a bit like Facebook or Twitter? You ignore it a lot of the time, them something which interests you pops up and you tune in. The great thing is; these media are interactive and ‘live’ so, if you have an opinion you want to air, you can. Also, if

you want to put out some useful information further than the person standing next to you, you can: At the receiving end, if it’s not relevant or interesting, you can ignore it. Sometimes social media can be important. Facebook and Twitter played a decisive role and were the main communications channels in the Arab Spring, enabling people, desperate for freedom and democracy to realise they were not alone, so they pushed forward together. Of course, in some of these countries, these channels have become tools to create division and foment disruption, but that is the price you pay for freedom of speech and open channels. One hopes that in time, people of goodwill will outweigh the others. As an example of a good and interesting local Facebook

page, you could look at the ‘Marine Square and Kemp Town’ page: www.facebook.com/ groups/373189616156358/ It has fascinating photographs and social history and also gets people together. It’s been online for less than 2 months but already has almost 700 people involved. That really is communication! On Twitter, we regularly get direct messages and requests for serious advice. Different people like different

media so maybe we should not dismiss Facebook and Twitter out of hand even they are not our preferred mode of communication. As my dad used to say, ‘It takes all sorts’. Interesting parting statistics: approximately 24 million+ UK residents use Facebook daily of whom up to 5 million are 55+ years old. Paul Bonett In case you are wondering… @bonettpa and @bonetts

Parental Responsibility - Know your rights Many people may have heard the term ‘Parental Responsibility’ mentioned but are unaware as to what it actually means until there is a dispute. By having a better understanding of this term hopefully parents will be able to resolve any disagreements that can arise between them amicably, and quickly by constructive discussion and negotiation, rather than by having to seek the Courts assistance and order.

So what is Parental Responsibility? All mothers and most fathers have legal rights and responsibilities as a parent – a concept known as ‘parental responsibility’. If you have parental responsibility for your child, you must:■ provide a home for the child ■ protect and maintain the child You are also responsible for: ■ disciplining the child

■ choosing and providing for the child’s education ■ agreeing to the child’s medical treatment ■ naming the child and agreeing to any change of name ■ looking after the child’s property ■ accompanying the child outside the UK and agreeing to the child’s emigration, should the issue arise ■ allowing confidential

Crosby&Woods | SOLICITORS Call: 01273 734 600 Email: advice@crosbywoods.co.uk information about the child to be disclosed So who has Parental Responsibility? A mother automatically has parental responsibility for her child from birth. For children born in England and Wales, if the parents of a child are married when the child is born, or if they have jointly adopted a child, both the mother and the father have parental responsibility. Significantly, both keep parental responsibility if they later divorce which is of fundamental importance so that the parent with whom the children do not live retains at all times this responsibility. An unmarried father can only obtain parental responsibility for his child in 1 of 3 ways: ■ jointly registering the birth of the child with the mother (from 1 December 2003) ■ Negotiating a formal parental responsibility agreement with the mother ■ Applying and obtaining a parental responsibility order from the court It is important to note that even though you may have parental responsibility for a child you don’t live with, you don’t necessarily have a right to contact with them - but the other parent still needs to keep you updated about their well-being and progress. If the mother does not agree, a father can apply for a parental

responsibility order from the court. In considering an application from a father, the court will take into account the following factors, the list not being exhaustive:■ the father’s reasons for applying for the order ■ the degree of commitment shown by a father to his child ■ the degree of attachment between father and child The court will then decide to either accept or reject the application based on what it thinks is in the best interests of the child – the emphasis being very much on what is in the child’s best interests.

At Crosby & Woods we offer practical and professional advice on all aspects of Parental Responsibility and other Family Law matters. We recognise that many issues regarding your child’s life and routines can be, and are, both highly emotive and contentious and as such it is vital that you know your rights (and obligations) at all times so as to keep disagreement and conflict to a minimum. If you are affected in any way by issues regarding your child and their upbringing, then please do not hesitate to contact us today for a no obligation 30 minute free initial consultation. Very Italian Pizza sets pulses racing with authentic cuisine @placesieatbtn

Authentic Italian cuisine appears to mystify Brighton. We are awash with chain and independent restaurants offering sub-standard British-influenced Italian and (luckily) a clutch of decent pizza takeaways. So when not one, but two, bornand-bred Italians say to you “the real deal is here”, we hotfooted to Very Italian Pizza! Very Italian Pizza (or VIP) is a family-run business. Originating from southern Italy - after years of farming and distributing Italian produce across not only their homeland, but also Europe - the family decided to open their first UK-based Italian restaurant here in Brighton. VIP is more than just a sit-down restaurant; it also acts as a deli and takeaway. Selling their own produce, including a wide selection of Italian smoked meats, cheeses and imported goods, VIP becomes an Italian community hub in its own right. Throughout the evening, the hustle and bustle grew as Italians gathered, shopped, drank and ate -

Charcuterie exceeded all expectations

surely a promising sign for this new Italian restaurant-cum-deli! Decorated in a slightly-over-thetop rustic style with subtle red, white and green touches - the odd basil plant here, a cleverly-placed tomato there - VIP is exceptionally light, fresh and inviting. Wellcrafted thick, light-oak wooden tables, red metallic chairs and an air of relaxed informality is present at VIP. The menu design is nothing special: double-sided and laminated, it looks like any other Italian restaurant in the city. Divided simply into starters, pasta, pizza, panuozzo and desserts, VIP has an eclectic selection of authentic Italian dishes, plus a few British crowd-pleasers throw in for tourist measure. Dining with two Italian friends, Andrea and Gaia, both from Rimini in northeast Italy, was a humbling experience. They talked me through their irritation with Italian cuisine in Brighton and highlighted what sets VIP apart from the majority of Italian restaurants in the city. We started with the Tavola Di Affettati - bresaola, Parma ham, speck, pancetta, salame, mortadella, bocconcini, and mozzarella (£7, or £13 for two sharing).

VIP’s fabulous traditional wood-fired oven is used to full effect

A large board of smoked and dry-cured meats, plus cheese, was presented; both exceeded expectations in terms of quality and quantity. From dry-cured Parma ham to smokey speck and provola affumicata cheese, the charcuterie was a wonderful introduction. For main, we ordered two pizzas, the Porcino - mozzarella, porcini wild mushrooms, speck, rocket, parmesan shavings - and the VIP - mozzarella, black truffle cream, porcini wild mushrooms, sausage - along with a bowl of Scialatielli Porcini pasta. Utilising their fabulous traditional wood-fired oven to full effect, VIP make all pizzas using lievito madre yeast. This produces a lighter base with better digestibility and is one of Very Italian Pizza’s hallmarks. The VIP Pizza with its truffle cream and porcini mushrooms was decadent and rich, the toppings

really holding their own against the light base - a real stand out of the evening. The Porcino pizza was a little dry; we were assured, however, that VIP are working on improving this recipe. The scialatielli pasta is made from scratch and took a little longer to arrive, but it was worth the wait as gorgeous thick strands of al dente pasta swam in a deep-red wine, herb and porcini sauce. Finishing off our meal with a bitter, dark and highlyenjoyable homemade Tiramisu was the perfect end to a very enjoyable, relaxing and authentic Italian three hours of dining. VIP, you have set pulses racing in both the Italian and Brighton community. Welcome to the neighbourhood.

One of the most famous grapes in Italian wine-making and the pride of the Piedmontwine growers, Nebbiolo is used to make some of Italy’s most-renowned wines. If you have ever tried a Barolo or a Barbaresco, you have tried Nebbiolo. Late ripening and highly influenced by soil and weather conditions, this vine is planted only in areas that will give it the best chance of reaching full maturity and sweetness. The high levels of acidity and tannins these grapes produce require the sweetness of a fully-ripened fruit to soften the wines and balance this astringency. The resulting wines, although light in colour, are deep and rich with heavy notes of spicy plum and dark cherry; they require some ageing before they are at their best. And although limited supply can lead to some high price tags, there are some great, affordable examples out there. Amazing accompaniments to red meats, stews, ripe cheeses and the olive oil, garlic and tomato-laden cuisine of the Mediterranean, ripe flavours and heavy scent make them an excellent dinner wine. Jamaica is a complete diving experience Tom Gallagher @GallagherTDG

As I broke the surface of the water in a flurry of bubbles, a man on a jet-ski pulled up and offered me some hash. “Ah, Jamaica!” I thought. It might have been the dizzying views of the coral reef that I had just explored or the nitrogen coursing through my blood, but I felt intoxicated enough. So I declined his offer and I reflected - not for the first time - upon this

unique Caribbean nation. A feeling of passive peckishness came over me and I swam to the boat, eager to gear up again for the afternoon’s descent. I was fortunate enough to be holed up in Negril, which is unquestionably Jamaica’s premier party quarter. Between the cliffs and bays and risqué resorts, Negril’s laid-back attitude had consumed me - and not because the cannabis was so easy to come by. I was there to dive in the bath-like clarity of the Caribbean. Negril is located on the western

tip of the island, where miles of pristine beach and rocky cliffs define its coastline. Coral reefs and complex cave systems offer a multitude of experiences for novice divers as well as the more adept. Shallow planes, sunken wrecks, and a marine life that blooms in rich technicolour course throughout the gentle seas. At times, when I dived the waters of Negril, I felt compelled to question my grip on reality, fearing that I had slipped unconsciously into an impossiblyrealised movie set. Middle Shoal Reef - for those, like me, with fewer bubbles under their belts - was the perfect introduction. A large coral reef and a flat, expansive sandy bed bore aggregations of cleaner-fish, tiny reef fish that danced in and out of their homes; even the odd turtle drifted lazily by. Among the depths, other highlights for me included The Throne Room, which is ostensibly a cavern of colourful sponges and

delicate coral in a crack in the reef. The exit is almost as exquisite as the entrance, as a coral window yawned before another deeper darker reef below. Two caverns conjoined via a narrow tunnel were at once beautiful and unnerving. The Caves, as the dive is known, ranged from about 40 feet to 70 feet, delivering a feast of sea-life sights. The Arches and the wreck of a Cessna 152 airplane offered unparalleled views, too. And across the shores and seas of Negril, the warming sun lit the blue depths in dazzling displays. On the last evening, as I watched the sun set at the world-famous Rick’s Café as people leapt from the cliffs into the water below, I

wondered if there could be a finer or more complete diving experience than this? But by then I did not give a monkey’s - because I had ordered a beer. And the man on the jet-ski, this time without his jet-ski, had found me again.

BMW launches fifth generation M3 saloon

Be wary about quick-fix products that really are too good to be true

The BMW M3 Saloon does everything the M4 Coupe does, but adds four-door practicality too.

First impressions The old BMW M3 saloon was a surprisingly poor seller. In 2011, its final year on sale, BMW sold 789 M3 Coupes and 255 M3 Convertibles, but just 85 M3 Saloons. Even in its best year, 2008, only 253 were sold – a full 1,000 more M3 Coupes (and 400 more M3 Convertibles) were shifted in the same year. This compact exec BMW fourdoor is as fast as the world’s most famous supercar – the Porsche 911 So why has BMW launched an all-new version of a car it hasn’t even bothered to sell for the past three years? Because of one thing: the 4 Series Coupe. That’s a new name, one that doesn’t have the four generations of idol-worship history the M3 does. Simply, BMW knew it would be mad to drop the M3 name, but it couldn’t call the hot 4 Series the M3 Coupe. Performance Performance specs are easy for the M3 Saloon, as they simply replicate those for the M4 Coupe. The manual version hits 62mph from rest in 4.3 seconds. It is restricted to 155mph and all the in-gear performance stats are the same too.

This, then, is a very quick performance saloon indeed. You have to pay nearly £86,000 to get a Porsche 911 that’s as quick – yes, this compact exec BMW fourdoor is as fast as the world’s most famous supercar. And boy, does it feel it, pretty much all of the time. Why? Engine torque – something starkly lacking in the old M3 V8 this car replaces. Peak pulling power is there from 1,850rpm (diesel-like, in other words) and remains at maximum output until a dizzy 5,500rpm. Its performance is extremely accessible, giving it the feeling of a full-blooded sports car at all times. Ride and handling The M3 uses exotic suspension that’s only distantly related to the regular 3 Series – that’s how extensive the M redevelopment has been. Aluminium componentry abounds and UK cars also get Adaptive M active suspension as standard. It’s an exceptionally entertaining car.The engine’s surging torque can be used to great effect, enhancing the feeling of well-balanced rearwheel drive but with enough electronics and sophistication

Today, I’m going to initiate you into an underground world that exists right under your noses: welcome to the exclusive playground that is the Brighton

and Hove of our youngest residents. Out shopping? Feeling a bit tired? Perhaps you’d like to sit down, but don’t fancy the hustle

there to ensure it doesn’t all get scrappy and messy. Price equipment and spec For £56,175 you’ll get an extensive standard spec that includes all the M performance additions – M Compound brakes, Adaptive M suspension, carbon roof – plus desirable everyday features such as sat-nav, all-round parking sensors and Bluetooth. Verdict The BMW M3 Saloon and the BMW M4 Coupe are identical underneath and both deliver a proper performance car punch – with lots of the old-school rear-wheel-drive muscle that was lacking in the more intense V8 model they succeed. Unless you’re seeking that last fraction of road-going racer effect, the M3 is sure to delight. But it’s the all-round flexibility of the M3 Saloon that’s key to its appeal. It does everything the M4 Coupe does, but also offers seats (and space) for four plus a decent boot. It’s that bit easier to live with, but no slower or less satisfying to drive. Coupe looks or saloon practicality? Over to you – neither is likely to disappoint.

and bustle of a coffee shop. In which case, feeding rooms may be just the thing, so long as you have a baby in tow. These little gems are dotted around the city, complete with comfy armchairs where parents can sit and rest (and feed their children, of course). In Churchill Square? Perhaps your legs are weary or you don’t like escalators; you would use the lift, but it’s rather small and lots of people are waiting. When you read this article, you will feel relaxed, energised, and simply by turning the page - you will have increased your thumb’s musculature. That may be an embellishment, exaggeration, or even fantasy. But it is a perfect introduction to this week’s discussion about “too good to be true”. In recent days, the “barefootrunning” minimalist trainer has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. In 2005, you may recall, a minimalist running shoe was born; try to picture a pair of gloves on your feet and you will not be too far off the mark. The celebrity glitterati were pictured padding the streets of Los Angeles and London, parading them as the latest fitness product - a product that marketed itself as an aid to strengthening our lower leg muscles while also reducing injury. By all accounts, the ‘“fivefinger shoe” flew off the shelves, accounting for 2% of all trainer sales worldwide. This week, however, a leading manufacturer conceded it did not have the necessary scientific evidence to support its claims. The claims of the once in-vogue, must-have trainer appear to have been overstated, at the very least. There is a common theme with these “too-good-to-be-true” products. Remember the must-have wristbands that exploded a couple of years ago? The power balance bracelets were

floors - Debenhams, WH Smith, BHS. It’s a veritable lift bingo. Perhaps you fancy a drink, something warm and comforting, but you don’t have enough change for coffee or tea? Well, warm, frothy milk is just 80p away - or possibly even a freebie away - in the form of a babyccino. Trying to economise by taking a packed lunch, but stuck for somewhere to eat it when the rain puts in an appearance? Then allow a child to accompany you to the library, where you can sit down and eat said lunch in relative peace while the children

an essential for golfers; the victorious Ashes team of 2009 could be seen sporting them. If you cannot quite remember the look, I will refresh your memory: a silicon bracelet with a central hologram. It was suggested by many that it improved balance, strength and flexibility - while optimising the body’s natural flow of energy. All of this phenomenal power for £30. Bargain! Of course, you have guessed it: a lawsuit was filed against this product shortly after its release, questioning its efficacy. So what have we learned and continue to learn? Retailers in our gyms and health studios and local fitness trainers profess to have products that will enhance your performance. But be wary. Always ask the necessary questions to yourself and evaluate the scientific evidence of the product before purchasing. Ask yourself: ■ How many people was the product tested on? Anything fewer than 100 people is worthless; ■ The manner of the testing; was it controlled? ■ What are the alleged benefits? If the product states, for example, you can increase your strength by 30% in one week, strongly question its validity. Something you can always rely on, away from gimmicks and accessories, is a Dynamic Pilates class. We hope to see you in Hove soon. Run-hungry Sharks fans will be hoping for another feeding frenzy tonight (Friday) as Sussex look to make it three win from three games in this season’s T20 Blast competition. The Hove crowd will be heading to the BrightonandHoveJobs. com County Ground – or Shark Tank as it has been affectionately dubbed – in good spirits despite Sussex being on the receiving end of a 9.1 over ownership from T20 world champions Sri Lanka last Sunday. That is because the Sharks had already chalked up a pair of impressive victories in their first two games of the domestic T20 contest – piping arch rivals Surrey to the post with a last ball boundary last Friday night before beating Middlesex the following day. Both the Surrey game and the friendly with Sri Lanka were well-attended and the club are hopeful or another bumper turn-out tonight for the visit of Hampshire. Stand-out Shark performances so far have come from Luke Wright, who plundered 56 from 31 balls against Surrey; Ashar Zaidi, who finished with 3 for 32 in the same game; Chris Jordon, who scored a useful 25 against Middlesex and an enjoyable an encouraging afternoon with the ball; and Steffan Piolet whose stingy four over spell on Saturday saw him collect two wickets for just 15 runs. Jordan linked up with England this week for the national team’s series with Sri Lanka and Sharks captain Ed Joyce is confident his side can make a splash in this year’s competition. Speaking to the BBC earlier this week he said: “We haven’t really

hit our straps yet but that shows we are a scrapping side and it is obviously a great start. “We know we are not the finished article as a Twenty20 team but that is good knowledge to have as we know we have to scrap to win games. “We haven’t got too many world beaters but we fight for each other and will do that all through the competition, win or lose.” That competitive, never-say-die spirit was in evidence in Sussex’s defence of just 128 against Middlesex – a score which Joyce was the first to admit looked likely to fall well short of what was needed. But defend it they did – thanks in no small part to some superb bowling from both Jordon and the T20 specialist Yasir Arafat, supported by admirable efforts from the side’s slower bowlers. Next up is Hampshire, who lost

their opening T20 Blast match by ten wickets to Glamorgan after scoring 151 from their 20 overs. Sharks fans may get a glimpse of former Sussex batsman and Brighton and Hove Albion striking prospect Joe Gatting who joined the county last year following his release from Sussex. The one-day specialist made his First Class debut in 2009 but failed to fully establish himself in the Sharks squad despite playing 52 T20 matches for his local side. Tickets are still available for tonight’s match priced £25 (allocated seat) or £20 (nonallocated) if snapped up before midday. Tickets sold after noon, or purchased on the gate will be £5 more expensive. More details are available online at www.sussexcricket.co.uk/t20, or by calling 0844 264 0206 or in person at the ground.

First new signing secured by the Seagulls from Swiss side Richard Morris

The Albion have kicked-off their summer recruitment drive with the signing of midfield enforcer Nzuzi Toko on a free transfer from Swiss side Grasshopper Zurich. Brighton are still without a manager after the departure of Oscar Garcia but were able to tie up a deal for the highly-rated 23-year-old after meeting him earlier in the year. The Congo-born player had been free to talk to clubs from January and had settled on the Seagulls before Oscar resigned. He completed a medical at The Amex earlier this week and the Albion confirmed he will officially become a Brighton player on July 1 when his Zurich contract expires – although he will link up with his new teammates from the start of preseason in late June. Seagulls chairman Tony Bloom took a break from searching for a new manager to announce Toko’s arrival on the club’s website, saying: “We concluded a deal to sign Toko before their season and ours had ended. “Now that Toko has completed

the season with Grasshopper Zurich we are delighted to welcome him to Brighton and Hove Albion.” Toko had been involved with the Zurich set-up since the age of 11 and has played for the Switzerland under-21 team after qualifying as a Swiss national. Seagulls fans have flocked to YouTube to catch snippets of their new man in action – with one particular highlights package showcasing an impressive array of tackling and defensive work. And they have been encouraged by comments – again on the club’s

website – about his intention to develop a strong bond with supporters after enjoying a close relationship with Grasshopper fans. Toko certainly won’t be the last new recruit to rock up in Brighton this summer. Having released a host of first team players and with reported Premier League interest in player of the year Matthew Upson, top scorer Leo Ulloa and winger Will Buckley, whoever lands the top job at The Amex will have his hands full recruiting a roster capable of another promotion push.

Under 21 recognition for young Seagulls starlets The Seagulls season may be over but two of the side’s young starlets have not hit the beach just yet. Solly March and Jake ForsterCaskey both enjoyed call-ups to the England under 21 squad for the European Championship qualifying clash with Wales earlier this week and the forthcoming Toulon youth tournament. And while March remained on the bench, Forster-Caskey made his under 21 debut as an 85th minute replacement for Harry Kane during the welcome 3-1 win over Wales in Swansea. The 20-year-old has represented his country at a host of age groups – including playing for his country in an Under 17 World Cup held in Mexico. More recently he was named in a 35-man squad for last year’s Under 20 World Cup, but failed to make the final cut. However, it seems his encouraging former in the Albion midfield this season has caught the eye of under 21 boss Gareth Southgate. Speaking to the club’s website about his call-up, a delighted Forster-Caskey said: “I have

been pleased with the progress I’ve made in the first team this season, playing a lot of games in the Championship, and so I’d like to think this is a reward for that. “Whenever you pull on an England shirt it’s a real honour, no matter what the level.” Forster-Caskey made 29 league appearances for the Seagulls this season – with only nine coming from the bench. He scored three goals and clocked up an impressive pass success rate of 79%. He was just one of a number of young players to breakthrough into Oscar Garcia’s youth-tinged Seagulls squad. Rohan Ince was named Young Player of the Year by the nowdeparted head coach, while Forster-Caskey’s fellow under 21 call-up colleague Solly March announced himself on the first team with a string of eye-catching cameos. March made 24 appearances – 17 from the bench – chalking up 20 key passes, one assist and 23 successful dribbles. The winger also scored his first senior goal in the FA Cup win over Port Vale.
