Why I am standing down Hove Park School Jason Kitcat @jasonkitcat
“In 2010, as a family, we agreed that, if re-selected for the 2011 council elections, this would be my last term on the council. And so it will be. It has been a huge honour and privilege to serve the residents of Regency ward since 2007; it’s a wonderful area to represent. To have been > Continued from page 1 lots to do”, he said: "To have been able to serve my second term as a councillor in administration, leading our city, has also been an immense honour."
Ania Kitcat is also standing down
able to serve my second term as a councillor in administration, leading our city, has also been an immense honour. “In dealing with the challenges we’ve faced, I’ve done all I can to contribute positively to our city for the benefit of all who live, work, and visit here. I’m proud of what we’ve been able to achieve as a Green administration, which I have led since 2012. “At this stage in my life, however, I am ready for a new challenge. I won’t be pursuing
active politics any longer, but do want to continue public service in some way. I have no firm plans as yet and intend to continue in my current role until the council term ends, as there is lots still to do. “This has been my decision, taken with my family. “My passion for our city is undiminished and I wish all those involved with continuing to support our city’s wellbeing the very best. You have my support and admiration.”
His Polish-born wife, Ania who has been the other Green councillor for Regency since 2011 - will also be standing down next May. The couple, who are currently on a city break overseas, have two children: an eight-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son. Cllr Kitcat - who has dual British and Canadian nationality and is fluent in French - has told friends that he intends to continue living and working in the city, unless any future opportunities require a move: "He is ready to consider anything that matches his passions, skills,
and interests." His departure comes after a particularly tumultous period, since the last council elections including the CityClean dispute, repeated attempts from within the Green Party to undermine his leadership and unseat him as leader, and a failed attempt to hold a referendum to win support for a proposed 4.75% increase in council tax to mitigate the effects of government-imposed spending cuts. Who in their right mind would choose to join a political party? See page 9
builds China link
Staff from a school with hopes of becoming an academy enjoyed a trip to Saudi Arabia paid for by Apple, the computer giant. Hove Park School sent two people to an education conference in Riyadh this term, with Apple paying the school’s cost in covering the staff. Two staff attended an event to bring together schools from around the world that are using technology to improve learning. The school has given each child an iPad to help with lessons. It also sent its deputy head to China to attend a conference, which resulted in Hove Park establishing a link with Yizhong High School, a leading school in Xuzhou, a city 300 miles north of Shanghai; Hove Park hopes the partnership will give students and teachers opportunities for exchange visits and allow the school to tap into how subjects like maths are taught in China. Hove Park was one of the first schools in the south to include Mandarin at GCSE and the language lessons are available to each year-group. Some parents had criticised staff for taking time to travel abroad.
Sharon Duggal, of Hands Off Hove Park, the anti-academy group, said: “How on earth do these trips improve learning and outcomes for children at Hove Park?” The school, however, defended the visits and said pupils would see the long-term benefits. Discussing the Saudi Arabia trip, Derrick Trimmer, the headteacher, said: “We are committed to exploring new approaches to teaching in partnership with a growing network of national and international schools who are innovating in the use of technology in order to secure the high quality outcomes that our students need to thrive in the 21st century.” Neil McLeod, the school’s deputy headteacher, who visited Xuzhou during half-term, said: “It was a privilege to meet the students and teachers and we are extremely excited for the potential for collaboration in the coming years." ■ A report about technology used in education has praised Hove Park. Technology in Education: A System View described the school as “an area of promise” and said it was “acting as a national beacon of good practice”.
Comment Whether you agree or disagree with Councillor Kitcat's politics and policies, citizens can still applaud his intelligence, assiduousness and, perhaps most importantly, his manifest concern for the wellbeing of fellow citizens - especially the poor and the marginalised. Even his inexperience, which some might describe as naivety, has been a breath of fresh air, when compared with the stale party-fed dogma of "machine politicians" who pull the strings in other parties.

Fund to fix potholes
'Route 81' reviewed
Enforcement starts
As many as 4,000 potholes across the city could soon be filled in after the Government approved a £230,632 payment to the council. The cash will be ring-fenced for dealing with the problem and as a condition of the deal, the council will have to publish monthly updates on its progress. Announcing the funding, Patrick McLoughlin, the transport secretary, said: “Potholes are the bane of all our lives and the funding announced today is an important step in ridding our roads of this menace.” The pothole payment comes after the Government gave Brighton and Hove £295,048 in March to repair roads damaged by poor weather.
Brighton and Hove Buses will make further changes to the old Route 81 following extensive feedback from bus users. The popular service in Queens Park was replaced with two new one-way circular routes but the bus company was told further changes were necessary during a public meeting. Having listened to the feedback, the bus firm has proposed a host of alterations, including a stop in Queens Park Terrace for all services, more buses into town via Edward Street and better spacing between buses on each route. Further details will be announced next month. The changes could be in place as early as September.
Motorists are being warned not to park on pavements - with the council promising to crackdown on anyone who does from Monday onwards. Particular attention will be paid to areas where residents have complained about illegal and obstructive parking. Councillor Pete West said: “Parking and driving over pavements causes considerable hazards for people, particularly in locations near schools, leisure facilities and shops.” At the end of last year, the council began enforcing illegal pavement parking in Elm Grove. In the first two months 563 penalties were issued.

A park shows what can be achieved if city does its level best for citizens Jason Kitcat @jasonkitcat
It is easy to forget that the new Level park and playground is less than a year old - especially now that it has become a weekend favourite for many families across the city centre. The recent Grand Community Celebration Event was a great reminder of how popular it has become. It was a brilliant day, with live bands, sports and games, children’s activities, and heritage walks. After a successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2012, we were able to implement our ambitious plan to restore what was previously a "dead zone" to a thriving well-used green space. The package of improvements included dancing fountains, a new children's playground, a sensory garden, tables for board

No compulsory teaching job losses at City College Richard Morris @Brightonindy City College Brighton and Hove has announced its restructure plans will include 51 full-timeequivalent staff voluntary redundancies, but no front-line forced job losses. The college needs to earmark £1.5 million of savings as a result of the widespread funding cuts to further education being felt across the country. Early proposals had identified journalism courses and a number of subjects aimed at adults with learning difficulties as among those to be dropped. Following uproar from unionised staff and students, the college’s management amended its plans – revealing the revised approach yesterday (Thursday). According to a college spokesperson, the key outcome of the “intense consultation period” is that no academic staff or teaching assistants are at risk of losing their jobs compulsorily. The spokesperson added: “A

few posts within the support staff structure remain at risk, but the college anticipates reaching resolution in such a way that is acceptable to staff and their union representatives.” The 51 full-time-equivalent staff voluntary redundancies were confirmed. Provisions for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities will be retained and the college will start new courses aimed at developing employment skills, such as English and maths, alongside life skills. Journalism will also be kept on, although the number of courses being run is believed to be being reduced, with staff facing a significant cut in hours. Lynn Thackway, the college’s principal, said: “Understandably, this has been a very difficult and intensive process to go through for everyone involved, but I really feel, in terms of minimising job losses at the college, we’ve achieved a significant amount by working together. “I think the level of engagement with the consultation was impressive, with everyone working incredibly hard together to reach agreement in such a way that focussed on the best interests of students and staff.” She added that, during the consultation, the college looked closely at its student support services. As a result, new student mentor posts have been put in place and a counselling service has been retained.
MPs ranked on response rate A survey has shown how quickly Brighton MPs respond to correspondence from their constituents. Website www.writetothem.com surveyed 58,558 people across the country who had recently communicated with their MP, asking whether they had had a reply - not just an acknowledgement within three weeks. It then ranked all 650 MPs in order of who was best at responding. Simon Kirby, the MP for Brighton
Kemptown and Peacehaven, placed highest of all East Sussex MPs, with 104 of the 124 survey respondents saying they had heard back from him within the time frame. That saw him in 51st place overall, 171 places higher than Caroline Lucas, the MP for Brighton Pavilion, and 429 higher than Mike Weatherly, the MP for Hove. According to the survey, Mr Weatherly replied to 73 of 173 respondents within three weeks, and Ms Lucas 147 of 221. The research then ranked each

Licensing officers will retest all the premises in the near future. The results of the investigation will be discussed at the city council’s licensing committee meeting next Thursday. Councillor Stephanie Powell, who chairs the committee, said: “It is shocking that there is such a high failure rate. “With gaming machines on the increase and the real concerns about fixed odds betting terminals, where people can lose a lot of money very quickly, it is more important than ever that we take steps to protect young people. “The council will continue to be vigilant, carry out test purchases and take enforcement action if necessary.”

No checks on under-age gambler Four amusement arcades and a pair of betting shops allowed an underage boy to use their gambling machines. Brighton and Hove City Council’s licensing team sent a 16-year-old out to gaming centres across the city to see if he would be challenged about his age before being allowed on the machines. But just one of seven of the premises tested - the Gaming Centre, in Boundary Road, Hove challenged him despite the legal age limit for gaming machines being 18. The businesses which failed to ask the boy his age were: Bridge Bookmakers, in St James’s Street, Brighton; Connaught Leisure, in George Street, Hove; Metrobet Bookmakers, in Boundary Road, Hove; Nobles Amusements, in St James’s Street, Brighton; Regency Arcade, in West Street, Brighton; and Silverstreak, in St James’s Street, Brighton. Duwayne is a remarkable play. I was swept into his story by the clever staging. It was unrelenting - an emotional rollercoaster. Tony Milner, the director, staged it brilliantly. And the casting really works. Adrian Decosta relates so personally to the part, and his agonies are highlighted by the solidity of the other actors. Why focus on the friend of Stephen Lawrence? I saw a drama about Stephen and Duwayne Brooks stood out to me. I wanted to know his story. I wanted people to hear that he was not "the boy who ran away and changed his story". Is that the driving force behind your plays: revealing the hidden story? Yes. Years ago, reading up about the war, I found this story about a young man called Herschel Grynzspan. He was 17, like my son, and I could hear his voice. That made me want to learn to write for theatre. "Herschel" has had workshops, readings, rewrites, but it’s never been performed. It’s very strong. I have such an attachment to this boy, but I haven’t made his story known. I still feel I’ve let him down.
The play about Duwayne Brooks has attracted much praise
But not Duwayne. No. I’m very, very happy people are getting to know what an amazing person he is. And it’s his voice that makes the play real. My kids’ voices are in Duwayne, actually. He’s under his duvet and people are asking him: "How are you?" "Are you all right?" He says: "Fine. I’m fine..." That’s what kids say. And, of course, they’re not fine at all. Your plays are based on real people. How much research do you do? Oh, don’t say research; it’s not. Research is bigger. Looking up stuff on the internet is reading. But I love it. You’re learning all about someone, contacting people. After Shackleton’s Carpenter [about the polar explorer], I met an admiral, a major-general - people you’d never meet. You go into another world. Duwayne Brooks is admirable. But you describe Stella Goldschlag – the Jewish Nazi informer in Blonde Poison - as a monster. Why choose those people? I do tend to choose rather flawed characters. Shackleton’s carpenter is like that: dour, argumentative. Even Marlene, which is a play about the end of Dietrich’s life, staying in bed 24/7. Her life was absolutely
Data As Culture opens at Lighthouse
disgusting. I watched her films, interviews, documentaries - massively absorbed that character. And then you’re creating this quite horrible woman. But it’s the story I wanted to know. What about some advice for aspiring playwrights? First, do a course. Mine was at Sussex. It was great. Secondly, write about things that interest you. And get it down. I read until I hear the voice clearly. The first draft, you do on your own, but then it’s a collaborative process. Like a writers’ group? Yes. New Writing South’s script-reading service has been extremely useful. You pay for a report. Until you hear the script, at a dramatic reading, you don’t get a true sense of it. Does playwriting make money? No. If I’m lucky, I might make £6,000 this year. Putting on a play is expensive. Thank goodness for the Arts Council; they made Duwayne happen. Finally, is there a new play in your head? There is. But it’s early days. But I never stop. It’s like studying. I just carried on learning. Now it’s playwriting. I just keep on keeping on. It is called the Open-data Bookstabber: a laptop attached to a compressor pulls up data that is converted into air pressure. Which activates a knife. Which stabs a book. The contraption is in the monthlong Data As Culture exhibition, which opens tomorrow (Saturday) at Lighthouse, in Kensington Street, Brighton. Data As Culture deals with the subject of "open data", from questions about mass surveillance to the nature of supposedly open council data. Commissioned by the Open Data Institute and FutureEverything Festival – and curated by Shiri Shalmy - it takes a critical and sometimes comedic look.

Who in their right mind would choose to join a political party? Dan Jellinkek @DanJellinek1
Membership of political parties overall has been falling. But is this a bad thing? There are currently about 450 parties registered with the Electoral Commission. These include fringe parties, such as Citizens for Undead Rights and Equality, whose candidate, Soraya Anne Kara, gained 61 votes in Brighton Pavilion at the last election on a slate of zombie rights, coming second-last to a less serious candidate (Don’t ask). By signing up and paying a small fee, you can join any party. And once you are a member, you have the same rights as any other member. Why might you want to? Most people join because they want to help a party win elections, but parties also support their councillors and national politicians once they are elected. Between elections, parties also campaign on particular issues, and joining can also be a good way of volunteering to help your community.
Party members can help shape their party’s national policy and elect their leaders. After all, it is party leaders who become prime ministers. Local party activism is also often the first step in people’s own political careers. Parties themselves are often in the news when rows blow up over their funding. These problems will never disappear completely: funding rules will always be stretched as parties try to maximise funds. If their memberships were bigger, however, they could gain more “honest” money from subscriptions. Although these are typically around the price of one pint of beer a month, this is not looking likely at the moment. With the exception in recent years of the Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru and significantly for Brighton and Hove - the Green Party, most of the UK’s main parties have been losing members steadily for decades. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, more than three million people were party members; by last year, this had dropped to

Ottolenghi:The Cookbook by Yotam Ottolenghi I never understand those people who do not bother to cook "just" for themselves. But then, I cook at the drop of a hat. One of the joys of co-hosting The Bookish Supper Society along with my good pal Sarah Hutchings - is that we get to spend ages poring over cookery books, choosing our menus. I have noticed that one of the books that we go back to again and again is Ottolenghi. He is an Israeli-born writer and chef and his food is Syrian, Turkish, Lebanese, Iranian, Israeli, and Armenian – with a western twist. In other words, utterly delicious. Fresh, vibrant, and not at all cheffy. You know, none of those towers of food with a nasty
smear of unnameable sauce on a plate. This is a cookery book that you can trust. I hate those overproduced cookery books that have too many vintage props and perfect-looking cakes that make you despair of ever achieving the perfect lavender, or rose, or elderflower, or chili sponges that they all seem to love. No, this is great food, honestly cooked and perfectly described. The pictures are swoonable over; and so is he, to be honest. Sweet potato gratin, baked artichokes and broad beans, Portobello mushrooms with pearl barley and preserved lemon, roast potatoes with Jerusalem artichokes and sage are some of my favourites. And every single time I have cooked them, they have gone down a storm.
about half a million, excluding affiliated memberships through unions. As BBC reporter Brian Wheeler wrote, there are now "more members of the Caravan Club...than of all Britain’s political parties put together". Does this matter? It might be that fewer people have strong lifelong links with parties these days, so why should they join
one? It is also true that people can be politically and socially active in many other ways. But, overall, as parties make the policies we all have to live by, it must be the case that the bigger their membership, the healthier our democracy will be. Parties must consider this question. What would inspire more of us to join? Could local meetings be made more interesting? Could other membership benefits be better? Innovative apps, websites or social networks perhaps? It is time to get these parties started right.

Wonderful stadium and fine concert; shame about hospitality at the Amex Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland
I just love the Amex stadium. I think it is a great asset for our city and Tony Bloom deserves a knighthood, as far as I am concerned, for all he has done so far. Even as someone who knows less about football than Jason Kitcat does about running the council, I purchased two 1901 Club seats. And, if my sons are not using them, I am even allowed to go. Fabulous facility, great for the city, parking is crap - but that is not their fault - and the building is 21st-Century cutting-edge technology. But boy, oh boy, do they need some serious training in the hospitality sector! A classic example for me was the Rod Stewart concert. I have seen Rod many times and think he is one of the music industry’s most versatile and talented performers. I think the standard entry charge of £60 was about right. However, having had long enough to forget that you do not usually experience the sort of food dished up in the Amex at

We settled down to the starter, rapidly followed by the main course, and after about 45 minutes we were being offered dessert. We suggested we might like to slow down a bit as the first act did not come on You do not usually until 7.30pm and it was experience the sort of food still only 6.15pm. "No worries", the pleasant dished up in the Amex at young man assured us under 30,000 feet” again, before ambling off. Having then ordered a bottle in order. under 30,000 feet, I booked the "gold package". This boasted a fourcourse dining-room experience and, against my better judgement, I purchased two tickets at a cost of £249 each. The doors opened at 5pm and we were advised to arrive by about 5.30pm to be seated. Which we duly did. Within minutes, we were being asked what we wanted by a very pleasant young man. Having had the distinct impression from

Looking at our watches, we realised we had only half an hour left to kill and so decided to visit the restrooms and then take our seats. This was when I experienced the best bit of entertainment so far and worthy of a comedy sketch. Having visited the restrooms and wondering what to do with the next 25 minutes, we bumped into a friend who was making her way back into the next dining room to ours. “We’re all in next door. Come and have a drink with us before the show starts,” our friend said. Great, I thought, things are looking up. The feeling of well-being, however,
was soon dispelled, when a lady - possibly better suited to being a prison guard - suddenly informed me: "’ere, you can’t stay in ‘ere, sir". Expecting at any moment to be wrestled to the ground and cuffed, we rushed our drinks and left to find our seats. I have to say Rod was as good as ever and, if I could have skipped the dining-room experience, I would have no real complaints. There were a fine crowd of people around us and the atmosphere was electric. But I am afraid they will be struggling to convince me to dine with them again. I would rather have fish and chips on the seafront.

Pub changes hands One of Brighton’s oldest pubs has been sold to Mitchells and Butlers (M&B), one of the UK’s largest pub companies. The Druid’s Head in Brighton Place, off East Street, was included in a £266million deal which saw M&B take over 173 of the pubs owned by rival firm Orchid. M&B already owns a host of pubs and restaurants in the city, including the Pump House, the Royal Pavilion Tavern, Browns, the Sussex Cricketer and All Bar One.

Diabetes service above average
Lack of progress
Green councillors are calling for an end to a ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood within 12 months of sexual activity. In 2011 a lifetime ban on gay or bisexual men giving blood was lifted across England as long as the donor had not had sex with another man in the last year. To coincide with World Blood Donor Day, Green councillors are now calling on the Government to change the rules.
Young patients and their parents have given the paediatric diabetes service at local hospital the thumbs up. A survey into the experience of children and young people with diabetes has rated the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital as better than the national average in almost every area. Around 13,000 families using 170 diabetes units nationwide were surveyed by the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit.
The leader of the local Conservative party has expressed his disappointment at the lack of progress over the development of a new leisure centre at the King Alfred site in Hove. Councillor Geoffrey Theobald is frustrated at the council’s failure to choose a developer almost a year after the site was earmarked for work. He said: “I simply cannot understand what the hold-up is as we have numerous potential developers, with well worked up plans, keen to get cracking.”

Business BBC deal for digital design firm A digital company has won a place on the BBC’s coveted digital design roster after a three-month tender process. Clearleft, which specialises in user experience design, saw off competition from more than 200 other agencies to land the spot. The roster was initially set up in 2001, and following the recent tendering process has been limited to just seven agencies, having been reduced from a previous 14 which included big name firms like Made by Many, Fjord and TH_NK. The new two-year roster, valued at a total of £3.5-4million, gives the selected consultancies the opportunity to work on visual design, interaction design, user experience and other projects across BBC consumer channels including standalone applications, websites and internet TV. Areas currently under consideration include news, sport, weather, iPlayer and children’s programming.
There are also opportunities for design strategy, prototyping and brand development. Andy Budd, founder and MD at Clearleft, was delighted. He said: “We’ve always been impressed with the BBC’s digital output, from their seminal Glass Door report on personalisation, through to more recent work like iPlayer and GEL (global experience language). “So we’re excited to be able to use our design and user experience insights to help improve such a valued institution.” This latest win comes after a successful start to 2014 for Clearleft, which has seen them undertake projects with The Wellcome Trust, NBC Universal and Nordea Bank (the leading financial services group in the Nordic region). Last year saw the company grow from 14 to 19 staff, and move into a new 7,000 square foot office building and event space in The Lanes, which it bought in a derelict state and spent six months refurbishing.

Restaurant's jobs policy praised by charity A retro-style American restaurant opening next month in Churchill Square is working with a leading charity to offer employment to disadvantaged job seekers. Ed’s Easy Diner opens on July 1 and promises to bring 1950s-themed eating to the city, with classic American dishes, milkshakes and an authentic jukebox. A number of new jobs will be created and, thanks to a deal the chain has in place with the Springboard charity, management will be looking to recruit young jobless people and unemployed people from a disadvantaged background. Andrew Guy, CEO of Ed's Easy Diner, explained: "Churchill Square Shopping Centre is the perfect location for our diner. We are working with Springboard, a charity which helps us employ young, unemployed or disadvantaged people from the local Brighton community into a career in hospitality." And Anne Pierce, CEO of Springboard, said the charity was only too pleased to lend a hand. She said: “Springboard is delighted to be working in partnership with

Ed’s Easy Diner. “As a charity, Springboard helps and supports young, unemployed and disadvantaged people of any age into a career in the hospitality industry. We are pleased to be working with Ed’s and the local community for this opening in Brighton, to employ people into a great career in hospitality.” Ed’s Easy Diner has used Springboard exclusively for new opening recruitment for the last 18 months and the charity has helped Ed’s employ around 300 new team members across the country. A spokesman for the restaurant chain said they hoped other businesses would follow their example. They said: “Springboard is in a unique position to put us in touch with great people that just need to be given an opportunity. We would encourage industry colleagues to become active business partners and see what great results Springboard can help your business achieve. “There are some truly amazing potential team members out there and via Springboard you can engage with them in a very positive manner'.
Living wage campaign signs up its 130th partner A campaign encouraging local businesses to pay their employees a living wage has seen its 130th firm sign-up. The Living Wage scheme has seen its support grow steadily across the city since its launch in 2012 - with the likes of Brighton and Hove City Council, Brighton & Hove Independent, Cobb PR, Sussex Police and Wired Sussex all pledging to pay staff at least the recommended £7.65 an hour. Campaigners were out in force during the UNISON conference being held at the Brighton Centre this week and were delighted to welcome the 130th business on board. Foodshed Brighton, which is opening at the Open Market, signed up on the morning of a UNISON session centred on the Living Wage. They excitedly tweeted the news to their online followers, announcing: “We have just registered to be the 130th Living Wage business and are over the moon. We love our staff.”
UNISON then held a lunchtime meeting to discuss how union members can encourage other cities and businesses to join the Living Wage campaign. And the union was joined by the Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce to make a joint effort to recruit other local business leaders and further swell the ranks of the Brighton scheme, which is now in its third year. UNISON took the decision to support the Living Wage campaign in 2013 when they themselves joined. The session started with Phil Wood, south east regional secretary of UNISON introducing why it is important for UNISON to be more involved with the campaign. He said: “Most companies come to the south east for quality of life but it’s is very difficult to have quality of life when you don’t earn enough in wages. “We want quality wages for a
Councillor Graham Cox
quality city and this campaign has been very good at making that change happen.” Councillor Graham Cox then gave the campaign a boost when he revealed the Conservatives locally are discussing whether to put the Living Wage into their manifesto. He said: “Full employment should be a Conservative aim. As that goal comes into sight in our city the case for a Living Wage becomes stronger. The fear was always that paying a Living Wage would hamper job creation. At the height of the recession this argument had some validity, but two to three years on with the good news on jobs the evidence for that has decreased.”

The horror and the hope
As we reveal a series of shocking attacks on horses, a gypsy and a councillor suggest possible solutions The evidence Frank le Duc @BHcitynews
The evidence is horrific to see: horses that have been slashed and injured, doped or damaged. There can be no justification. There has to be a solution. Instead of anger, there has to be hope. Perhaps the terrible photograph on this page will inspire renewed attempts to find a solution that is more ambitious than the pointless cat-andmouse game that sees council officers and police pursuing travellers from park to park. On the page opposite, Tony Coyle, a respected figure in the gypsy community, suggests selfmanaged - leased or privatelyowned - sites might be part of the answer. Mr Coyle is ready to meet councillors, some of whom - like Councillor Christina Summers - might be prepared to listen, rather than simply channel and champion the fury of residents. Meanwhile, only three caravans occupy the official largely empty - travellers’ site, partly because of problems with drainage. Danny Cross, the man who runs Stanmer Horses rescue centre, fears for his life after a series of attacks, over recent months, on his animals and property. Mr Cross, 37, from Brighton - who has run the rescue centre for just over a year - said Sussex Police have not tried even to take a statement or collect evidence.
He told me the incidents coincided with gypsies and travellers being in the park, with some of them - a minority, to be sure - harassing him at his stables. Recent incidents include: ■ One horse having its face slashed; ■ A foal being doped; ■ A shire horse having its mane hacked and its neck stabbed; ■ Fences being broken, leaving a field insecure; ■ A man forcing open a horse’s jaw to inspect it, injuring the horse’s mouth.Emma Holloway, 30, a rescuecentre volunteer, said: “They were threatening to kill my kids. A big brick came over and all the horses scattered.” Substantial vet’s bills have resulted from caring for four of the 40 rescued horses that were abandoned, in poor condition, in Wild Park in Moulsecoomb. Mr Cross believes that the four horses were left by travellers there and said that they had to be nursed back to health. Sussex Police have sent police community support officers to the stables in recent days, with an empty police vehicle visible in the stable yard. Cllr Christina Summers, who represents Hollingdean and Stanmer, is to meet senior council officers and police officers today (Friday) and on Monday. The council has sought a county court order for possession of the land so that those camped there can be evicted. On Sunday (June 22), the park is due to host the annual Sussex Festival of Nature from 11am to 5pm. Topaz, a palomino mare, had her face slashed in one of a series of violent attacks at Stanmer Horses rescue centre in recent months

Step One • Metered households: Turn off all the water in your home including appliances that use water e.g. washing machines. Then locate your meter, which is typically in the public footpath outside your home. If the red meter dial is moving, then it’s possible there is a leak.
• Unmetered households: Check for visible signs of a leak such as water bubbling out of the ground or a very damp patch in your garden on a dry day. Step Two • If you suspect a leak please phone our 24-hour freephone Leakline on: 0800 820 999

A gypsy's view Tony Coyle
I’m a gypsy. I was born in Birmingham, of Irish parents. I’m one of eight brothers and I’ve got six sisters. I never went to school. I can’t read and write. I’ve worked since the age of 13. I’ve been a builder all my life. I sell caravans and chalets and I own a site - seven acres,

freehold - in Salfords, in Surrey. I’ve been by the side of the road all my life. It’s becoming a computer world. The day is coming when everything is done on cards. Money won’t count for anything. Travellers never did pay taxes. A lot of gypsies and travellers now pay taxes. Now, it’s a different world and you’ve got no choice. I pay my taxes and I pay all my bills. I’m out for a break for my kids - my two daughters. They’re 12 and one. I could be on the road for six weeks and
then I’ll go back to Surrey. Nobody here’s been trying to steal horses. There are no horses here [in the camp in Stanmer Park]. There are only two horseboxes here and they’ve got other stuff in. People wait until we’re around to do things like that and we get the blame. The price of feed and equipment has been going up. A Transit full of feed will fetch a grand. I’m a gypsy liaison officer in Tandridge, but nobody listens. People have got no idea. They’re paying a gateman £500
and double the room, then they could get 50 caravans or more there. They could have two to a pitch. There are 80 here [in Stanmer Park]. It would help. About drainage and the cesspits, I’ve been building them all my life. It would cost about £15,000. They’re talking about drainage, but it’s cesspit land. Gypsies would be happy if Horsdean’s run so it pays for itself. I’d pay £50 a week. That’s reasonable.
a week or more for security at Horsdean. But there’s nothing there to take or damage. On a site, the damage happens after 5pm, when the caretaker’s gone home. But if you have a head man, who has the authority to say “do that again and you’re off”, things would be better. It would need to be someone who was respected by people on the site. I’d run Horsdean, but it’d have to be on my terms. I could take it on a six-month trial, for free. They haven’t got a clue. They should open the gates
Tony Coyle was speaking to Greg Hadfield and Frank le Duc.

A councillor's view Christina Summers @Cllr_Christina
Something is frighteningly wrong when residents and small-business-owners tell me their property is constantly under attack by travellers - and that they fear for their personal safety, but the police are failing to offer any kind of protection, assurance, or even presence when an incident is faithfully reported. As ward councillor for Hollingdean and Stanmer, where most incursions are taking place with a seemingly-relentless
frequency and increasing size, my overriding mandated duty is to advocate on behalf of local people, irrespective of my own views on travellers, or the views of council officers and police. I sincerely hope that my councillor and MP colleagues across the political spectrum would agree. There is no one single solution to this. So no party should ever claim to have the silver bullet; nor should any councillor work exclusively to protect their own

Estate agents double charging sellers and buyers Early on this year, when I first came across this notion, from surprised potential buyers, I wrote a piece about this ‘interesting’ new way of extracting money from both sides of a deal. Now, thankfully, there is a motion in Parliament to stop it before it becomes established practice. It reminds me of the different offers you get from a utilities supplier until you don’t know which offer is the one to go for. For me, this is the logic: someone has to pay a fee, seller or buyer, and agents need to act for a party, have a client. If the agent takes a fee from both, who is the client and when do you swap sides?...when the going gets tough probably. If you want to get the best price and have your sale managed as best as possible, the client needs to be the seller.
You cannot outwit the market; neither can the buyer or agent. Buyers will pay what they think the property is worth to them and you will have a clear deal. If you want to have your house price eroded by a very ingenious agent, acting for a buyer because that is who is paying their fee, let the agent charge you a very small ‘launch’ fee. In that case the buyers will be told, if they want to buy your property, they need to pay the commission, as much as 2% plus VAT of the buying price. If they don’t want to pay a commission, perhaps, and quite likely, they will not want or be allowed to visit in the first place. In addition, when the sale completes, where do they find the cash to pay the agent? They cannot add it to the mortgage; well, not at the moment at least. As a seller, how do you know
you are getting the best offer from the best buyer if the buyer is paying the fee or not even coming to the property? You don’t. It’s the phrase about having two masters; it does not work. So, I hope the government will look at the ramifications of this and knock it into touch. If it does not, I fear that in a year or two, no one will know what to do and who to trust as agents. Some firms, now run effectively as financial institutions, will make it confusing and unclear; to catch the suckers who think they can get something for nothing. What would you prefer? Watch this space. Late news 17.6.14 – government have passed on it and have asked the Property Ombudsman to review the issue. Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A.

Do I need to sell my house If I get divorced / Dissolve a civil partnership This title of this article perhaps reflects one of the most frequently asked questions we get when advising our family clients upon the breakdown of a relationship. In addition to having to deal with the understandable emotional
upheaval and distress from the ending of a relationship, concerns over where someone is to live in the future and how that is to be funded rank very highly in terms of vital issues to resolve quickly. Where possible, the aim must always be
to try and do this without incurring significant costs when that money may well be needed to fund moving forward. At Crosby & Woods, we recognise that separating from a partner can be a very daunting prospect from a
www.brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk
Crosby&Woods | SOLICITORS Call: 01273 734 600 Email: advice@crosbywoods.co.uk financial point of view. It may seem like an impossible task to sort out long term financial arrangements with your spouse or civil partner, especially if tensions are running high and where there are still highly emotive issues that are very recent and painful and which make clear thinking difficult to do. Our experienced and sympathetic solicitors are here to help take some of the emotion out of the situation and to advise and assist in a calm and pragmatic way that allows every client to make an informed decision on how best to find an acceptable solution for them. Perhaps the most crucial issue for any person to get their head around is the acceptance that it will often be difficult (in most cases impossible) to stretch two incomes over two separate households, particularly where children are involved, with the result that both parties are not able to maintain the standard of living previously enjoyed in the relationship. Many people own a property with their spouse, it is the main asset and therefore they worry whether the house may have to be sold upon the separation/divorce to fund two separate futures. In this scenario, what are the other options available?
1) Mesher Order
This is a Court Order that provides for the sale of a property to be postponed and for the home to be held on trust for sale upon certain specified events. These events are commonly the youngest child reaching a certain age (18 or the end of University education), the death of the occupying party or that party’s remarriage. This type of order is perhaps the one with the potential to cause the most disagreement and ill feeling between the parties in that it ties up one person’s share of the matrimonial assets for a protracted period at a time when access to funds is vital for them. For that reason it is essential to obtain professional and realistic legal advice at the earliest opportunity as to how to best alleviate the adverse financial consequences arising from it.
(Discount from our usual rate for any reader mentioning this advert)
2) Transfer of the Property to one party Often one party may be in a better position to finance the mortgage in the future. In this case, it should be considered whether the property (and mortgage with the mortgage company’s approval) can be transferred to one party's sole name. In this event, the party who is to retain the property will often pay the other party a lump sum of money in return for them giving up their share and all legal rights or interests in the property. This is very much the ‘clean break’ outcome that in our experience is most suitable for couples where both are working and where there are no children from the relationship or where a couple is retired, any children are grown up, and therefore there are only two people whose financial interests need addressing. We often see a situation where the party who intends to continue residing in the former matrimonial home has serious concerns as to whether they can actually afford the regular outlays and mortgage payments, particularly if their income is limited. In this scenario, it will be necessary to also consider ongoing income needs and decide whether a provision for spousal maintenance is also required so that the house remains at all times ‘affordable’ to retain. For some clients there will need to be an early recognition and acceptance that downsizing of a property to a smaller more affordable one is required if a workable final agreement is to be reached. We offer a full range of fee funding schemes which are tailored to our client’s individual circumstances and we are always happy to also offer an initial first meeting on a free and no obligation basis as a way to fact find and give a client a helpful ‘overview’ of their situation and possible options moving forward. Kindlewood Pizza
A ‘grab and go’ option for everyone passing through Brighton Station @placesieatbtn
Commuter, day-tripper, Brighton local, or tourist: We have all been to Brighton Station and fancied something quick and easy to eat in order to see us through the rest of our onward journey. This is where Kindlewood Pizza fits in perfectly. An off-shoot of the awardwinning Cafe Coho, Kindlewood Pizza has been a long-time coming for James Wilson, the manager.
A nine-month process saw James and the team renovate a vintage 1969 Citroen H van into a gorgeous, mobile pizzeria, complete with Bushman wood-fired oven and state-of-the-art coffee machine. Weighing more than three tonnes, the van is parked on the forecourt of Brighton Station daily, serving freshly-cooked pizzas for brunch, lunch, and dinner. With a sterling team on board, including highly-trained pizza chefs, Kindlewood stands out as a rustic and charming bottle-green pizza van. James’s research led

Coffee Chronicles You say “just a coffee”, so we say “what sort of coffee?” This usually prompts you to stare at the menu (with the exception of that man who actually asked if we have Nescafé) and come back to us with “I just want a normal coffee.” So we admit defeat, mask our disappointment, and make you an Americano.
by @LittleCoffeeCo Now let’s explore the reason why we insist on calling your “normal coffee” an Americano. Towards the end of World War II, when the Americans couldn’t hack the strength of the Italians’ espressos, they diluted them with hot water, and thus the Americano was born. It’s a charming story, but it really isn’t true.

him across Brighton and London, taking influence from a range of Italian pizzerias and restaurants. Working from a simple yet expandable menu, the Kindlewood pizzas are 10” Neopolitan thin base, with a range of toppings. The dough is prepped beforehand on the Queen’s Road Cafe Coho site and stored ready for use on Kindlewood’s bespoke dough fridge. Each pizza takes a mere 90 seconds from order to eating - an offering that James and the team really push as the perfect “ -grab and go” option. The menu itself ranges from classic Margarita, with buffalo mozzarella and basil, to a spicysounding Kindlewood Fire, with Spanish chorizo and fresh chilli. Pizzas are priced from an exceptionally-affordable £5.50. Kindlewood also serves up a vegetarian option and a rocket, balsamic and parmesan salad great as a side dish or on its own. Lucky enough to try the Kindlewood Blue with buffalo mozzarella, smoked pancetta, Brighton Blue, and rosemary, I was treated to a great combination of flavours. Dripping with a thin layer
When America’s first coffee houses opened, they invented a milder drink to satisfy the modern American taste, and thus the Americano was born. Sorry, we did it again. The truth is that nobody can really pinpoint the birth of the Americano. Etymology suggests that the Americans had something to do with it, but the same logic could prove that it was a guy called Eric. The Italians named all the “abnormal” coffees, and even the
of tomato sauce and melted mozzarella, I found that the smokey pancetta worked well against the creamy, rich blue cheese and pinelike rosemary. The choice of thinner Neapolitan base made for a lighter pizza and it was easy to see how these 10” meals are a fantastic option for a quick, post-work dinner, or a prejourney snack. With a menu that can be easily adapted to include daily or weekly specials and lunchtime offers, Kindlewood pizza is a welcome addition to the street food scene we have seen sweeping across the city. Still retaining some of Cafe Coho’s rustic charm is a strong point for Kindlewood, coupled with the ability to use the Queen’s Road branch as a sit-down restaurant for evening pizza-eaters. I predict Kindlewood will go far this summer and kudos to James and the team for finding a gap in the market and successfully setting up a new, respectable Brighton business. Dark-skinned and tightlybunched, these grapes have become central to Italian wine production over the last century. Such wines are renowned for their deep colour and balance of rich, velvety flavours, almost savoury at times, with hints of dark cherry, plum, and the peppery scent of sun-baked herbs. Tuscany is its spiritual home, where it forms the basis for some of Italy’s most famous wines, such as Brunello di Montalcino, which is a pure Sangiovese. Sangiovese is a key component in what is perhaps the most-widely-drunk Italian wine, Chianti, which is required to contain minimum of 70% Sangiovese, and Chianti Classico, its more prestigious cousin, a minimum of 80%. These are then blended to soften the pronounced tannins and compliment the fruity structure. This Tuscan powerhouse, when paired with aromatic Italian dishes such as pork ragu, veal chops or anything with the savoury herbaceous flavours of the Mediterranean, is a shining example of the best Italy has to offer.
nastiest of British pronunciation can’t remove that pesky little “o” from the end of what would otherwise just read “American”. We embrace the name Americano for the same reason that our ancestors didn’t invent “that newshaped thing” which makes “the normal-shaped moving thing” move along quicker - they invented “the wheel”. Wildernesses of South Carolina host a myriad holiday activities Tom Gallagher @GallagherTDG
The American state that became the first to declare its independence from the British Crown is rinsed in history and keen to be a top activity destination for people from the United Kingdom. South Carolina, which lies between Georgia and the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the southern states; its history is a controversial and often-turbulent tale of independence, secession, integration, and exploitation. But today the state is a bone fide tourist hotspot and is keen to highlight its energetic disposition to the active holidaymaker. From the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Atlantic coast cities, rural villages and wilderness areas feature throughout many different pursuits. Whether it is hiking or mountainbiking, paddling on ancient water routes, riding an all-terrain vehicle, motorcycling through dense forest, or horseback riding into remote landscapes, South Carolina is dense with possibilities. For those who would prefer to explore on two wheels rather than four, bike trails are the perfect way to see the Palmetto State’s diversity of landscapes. The Catawba River Run provides a beautiful ride along the banks of the river with plenty of creeks, rocks and mud to add a bit of excitement. Alternatively, Fant’s Grove provides lots of interconnecting trails, some of which follow the edge of the lake while others lead to an old rock quarry - perfect for a swimming break. Two more trails that are worth
Catawba River can also be explored by kayak checking out include the Fort Jackson section of the Palmetto Trail and the Issaqueena Lake Trail, which is located on the property of Clemson University’s Experimental Forest. The state’s stirring rivers offer arguably the finest and most varied paddling in the eastern United States. With 11,000 miles of rivers, numerous lakes and coastal waters, paddlers can choose from rushing white-water rivers, tranquil swamplands, or fine river waterways. Easy-flowing rivers such as the Lynches, Black and Ashley offer relaxing paddling; for the more adventurous, the rapids of the Chatooga, the south’s first National Wild and Scenic River, is far more of a challenge. Hundreds of miles of scenic hiking trails that lead in, around and to places of unique history, wild splendour and the natural beauty of the Palmetto State can be explored. Trails vary from easy walks such as the East Fork, which is perfect for families, to more strenuous and rugged routes suited to experienced

hikers. Wherever you go you are sure to discover spectacular scenery from impressive lakes to picturesque mountain pathways. Venture into forested backcountry on multi-day wilderness treks or hike through the heart of the state on the Palmetto trail which features more than 452 miles of hiking trails. A couple of centuries after it declared itself separate from the British Empire, South Carolina is firmly back on the British map. Throughout its history the state has determined its own course and set its own pace. It has courted controversy and coveted independence while its natural environment peaceably waited, serene and beautiful, for us to enjoy today.

With all the gorgeous outfits in the shops and various events that you may have this summer - weddings, the races, graduations, and so on - make sure your outfit is finished with accessories. Shoes, bag, hat, and jewellery are all an important “attention to detail” that really gives your outfit more style. With them, you can add your personality and create a unique look. Links of London is based in East Street and has a great collection, with jewellery for every occasion. In addition, there are plenty of perfect gift ideas. The company began its journey in 1990 with a simple request for a pair of fish cufflinks. A restaurant owner commissioned the manufacture of a pair of the sterling silver cufflinks, as a gift for loyal clients. Harvey Nichols, the exclusive London fashion store, loved the design and ordered a whole collection.
Thus, Links of London was born. Today, it has grown internationally with stores in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, the United States, and Canada. As an iconic British jewellery brand, it has continued to captivate customers with striking jewellery collections, statement watches, and a selection of exquisite gifts. Since the beginning, imaginative design, uncompromised craftsmanship, and the use of the finest materials have remained integral to each new collection, ensuring that each piece remains a timeless contemporary classic. And that’s all before lunch. No lounging on the sofa in their house; no milk or food stains, either. Where I feel like a heroine if the even-slightly-appealing aroma of a home-cooked dinner is wafting out into the hallway to greet Daddy-O when he gets home at 8pm, my friend thinks nothing of whipping up some homemade fish fingers with hand-shelled petits pois for Tommy’s tea and then having an exquisite pizza made from scratch with hand-kneaded-not-even-from-abreadmaker dough on the table
for her and her husband a mere hour or two later. Where I stick to declaring bath night just three times a week, she has Tommy floating on fluffy bubble bath clouds every time there’s a “y” in the day. Where I lounge in bed for an extra half hour at the weekend, luxuriating in a little time to myself while Daddy-O takes care of Tibbons, she is out running around the streets of Brighton and Hove. Literally running. You know, as in working out, exercising. I wouldn’t believe it, but Daddy-O bumped into her
while he was out and about with Tibbons (I was busy having a lie in). I expect you’re wondering how I manage to stay friends with her. But really, it’s fine. Because I bet she doesn’t dance around the house with Tommy’s pyjama trousers on her head, the legs flapping about like bunny ears. That’s a Mummy K special, thank you very much. Sharks T20 campaign far from over despite slump
Richard Morris @Brightonindy A dismal run of form looks likely to have ended Sussex’ hope of T20 success but with seven games still to go the Sharks could yet make a run for the quarter finals. The Sharks currently sit seventh in the South section, three points behind fourth placed Kent with the top four in each group progressing. And despite a disappointing run of just three wins in their last 17 competitive T20 games, Sussex could close the gap this evening (Friday) with a welcome win over Kent in Canterbury. Key to the county’s chances will be the Sharks’ remaining three Natwest T20 Blast home games at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground. Middlesex Panters, Kent Spitfires
and Glamorgan all have to come to Hove before the climax of the shortgame season - meaning a healthy points-haul is still a possibility. The Sharks have been hamstrung by a series of injuries to key players, including the influential all-rounder Michael Yardy who remains on the sidelines. Chris Jordan’s excellent earlyseason form was rewarded with a call-up to the England team and the bowler has gone on to impress in the Test team, reducing the chances of Sussex fans seeing him tearing in from the Sea End on a regular basis any time soon. Last time out Sussex lost by 34 runs to Somerset, who dismissed the Sharks seven balls short of 20 overs. Only Yasir Arafat offered any significant resistance with the bat, notching 36 runs from 23 balls, including five fours.
Steffan Piolet ended with an impressive 2-24 for the Sharks but the Sussex attack had no answer to big-hitting Craig Kieswetter, who plundered 70 off 49 balls, registering seven hours and a six in an eye-catching innings. The Sharks next T20 home game is on June 27 when they welcome Middlesex Panthers for a 7pm start, followed by the visit of Kent Spitfires on July 11 for another Friday night slogathon at the Shark Tank. Last, but not least, will be the match with Glamorgan on July 15, with a 6.30pm start. This fixture has been designated as a kids for a quid game, with children who are accompanied by a full paying adult and booked in advance given entrance for just £1. For more information or to book visit: www.sussexcricket.co.uk or call 0844 264 0206.
Former Sussex player’s life-time cricket ban Naved Arif, the former Sussex bowler, has been banned from cricket for life after being charged with match-fixing by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The 32-year-old admitted half a dozen breaches of the governing body’s anticorruption guidelines dating back to his spell playing for Sussex in 2011. Arif will now not be able to play, coach, or participate in any way in any form of cricket which is officially recognised by either the ECB or any of its worldwide equivalents. The match-fixing investigation which snared Arif looked into a 40-over game between Sussex and Kent at Hove in August 2011 which Kent won the game by 14 runs. Arif’s then team-mate, New Zealand international Lou Vincent, was also charged in relation to the same game and a subsequent T20 match with Lancashire the same month. The 35-year-old former Test batsman has since been cooperating with the authorities as they continue their investigation. Arif spoke of his shame after
following news of his ban. A spokesman for his legal team, said: “He is deeply ashamed of his actions and, consequently, bringing the game of cricket into disrepute. “These actions were unacceptable and Mr Arif has no excuses. “Being banned from cricket, the game he loves, is the most severe punishment he could receive. Mr Arif is currently considering his future, having learnt some painful lessons from the past.” David Collier, ECB chief executive, said: “Today’s announcement sends out a very clear message that the ECB has a zero tolerance approach to corruption. “It will root out and punish those who pose a threat to the game’s integrity.” Sussex chief executive Zac Toumazi told BBC Radio 5 live sports extra: “It closes one very unfortunate chapter. It’s been awful for everyone.” Pakistan-born Arif played for Sussex in 2011 and 2012, qualifying as a non-overseas player through his Danish wife, and represented Pakistan A, but never featured at full international level.

Possible cartoon clash with Albion’s opener Brighton and Hove Albion could become the first Football League club in history forced to change the date of a game to accommodate a cartoon character. The Seagulls are scheduled to entertain Sheffield Wednesday at The Amex in their season opener on Saturday, August 9, but just a stone’s throw away in Stanmer Park, Peppa Pig, Dick and Dom and a host of other kids’ TV favourites have been booked to appear at the Little Monsters Bash. The family festival will run from 10am until 6pm - meaning a potentially awkward clash with the Albion’s scheduled 3pm kickoff. It is just one of a host of
matches which supporters are already speculating could be subject to change following the publication of the Championship fixture list earlier this week. There have, however, been no official suggestions the clash could result in the Brighton match being moved. At the moment it is purely supporter speculation. In previous seasons when the opening game of the season has fallen on the same weekend as the city’s Pride festival, the Albion
have specifically asked to be away on that day to avoid logistical problems, like policing both events. No such request would appear to have been made here. Paul Barber, the club’s chief executive, did however confirm some matches would likely see a shift in kick-off time or date. He said: “Even once we publish any revisions, it is likely there will be at least one or two further changes during the season
- either due to TV broadcast contracts that are in place, cup runs, weather disruption or for local operational reasons. “We do appreciate that changes can make things more difficult for supporters but, as ever, we will communicate any further changes as soon as we are aware of them.” Brighton’s first away game is the trip to face Birmingham City at St Andrews on Saturday, August 16, which is quickly followed by a match with Leeds United at Elland Road on Tuesday, August 19. Supporters have already begun penciling away trips into their diaries, with many keen to take advantage of reduced advance rail prices.
Five away games for the diary: Brentford: September 13 Norwich City: November 22 Wolves: December 20 Charlton: January 10 Millwall: March 17 One match, however, has already upset Albion fans. The Seagulls are set to play Middlesbrough away on the last game of the season, Saturday, May 2. It is provisionally down as a 3pm kick-off but the Championship’s final day is often rescheduled by television to start at 12.15pm. That would leave the Albion’s travelling support facing an early start to travel the 262 miles in time to cheer on their team.
Hyypiä’s Ulloa hopes Richard Morris @Brightonindy Sami Hyypiä’s first real job as Brighton and Hove Albion manager looks likely to be trying to convince the club’s star striker to stay put. Premier League newcomers Leicester City, who have already tempted Matthew Upson away from The Amex, have reportedly had three bids for Albion’s talisman Leo Ulloa turned down. The Midlands outfit are believed to have gone as high as £7million in their efforts to land the forward, who has an impressive record of 23 goals in 50 league games for Brighton. Supporters have so far been split on whether or not they think the club should cash in on its prize playing asset and Tony Bloom, the Albion’s chairman, may find it difficult to reject any increased offers – particularly if reports in the national press suggesting the player wants to leave are true. Hyypiä, however, is clear he wants the striker to stay in Sussex as he prepares to shape his Seagulls squad for another tilt at promotion. Should Ulloa leave, Brighton would be left with only Craig Mackail-Smith as a senior striker and a large chunk of any transfer fee received for the Argentinian would almost certainly be earmarked for
finding a replacement. Hyypiä had already revealed, during an interview with media from his native Finland, that he understood the need to reinforce the Albion’s attacking options after a frustrating season in front of goal which saw the Seagulls struggle to score on too many occasions. That demand will only increase if Ulloa is allowed to leave. Brighton already need a new number one following the departure of Tomasz Kuszczak and Hyypiä, himself an impressive centre half, also wants to prioritise signing a central defender to compete with Gordon Greer and Lewis Dunk. Hyypiä told the Finnish press he had already given the club’s hierarchy the names of a number of Finnish players to scout ahead of the new season, believed to include 19-year-old striker, Joel Pohjanpalo, who has sparked previous interest from Liverpool and has half a dozen international caps. The club expects right back duo Bruno and Íñigo Calderón, who is currently holidaying in Brazil, to sign new deals in the coming weeks. The Albion also remain interested in Wolves defender Stephen Ward, who enjoyed a hugely impressive season-long loan spell at the club last year but who is likely to be deemed surplus to requirements at his parent club.
Leo Ulloa has been the subject of several bids from Leicester City
Win a dinner date with Seagulls star Albion fans are being given the chance to win a dinner date with crowd favourite Iñigo Calderón. The club’s charitable wing, Albion in the Community, is holding a fundraiser which sees 55 cyclists ride from Brighton to Paris – starting today (Friday) - in an effort to raise £35,000 to help local disabled youngsters get involved with sport. Calderón, the Albion right back, has been a long-time supporter of the AITC’s work and has agreed to treat one lucky fan to an all-expenses paid lunch. To be in with a chance of winning all supporters need to do is donate a minimum of £10 to the bike ride. Anyone who donates before 7pm on Monday, June 30 will be entered into the draw.
