Council leaves no stone unturned Greens go for broke with in last-ditch bid to provide homes 5.9% council tax increase Frank le Duc @BHcitynews
Brighton and Hove needs up to 24,000 new homes over the next 15 years. Despite repeated efforts, city councillors and their officers have found sites for only 11,300 in the draft City Plan. A government inspector has told the council to leave “no stone unturned” in the search for places where we can build homes for our children. Part of the search should take in dozens of green spaces on the edge of our city, the planning inspector said. Next week, councillors will be asked to approve a list of 39 “urban fringe” sites to submit to the planning inspector in the hope that she will finally pass the City Plan. Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty, the Green Party councilor and chair of planning, said: “The government is holding our green spaces to ransom. “If they don’t get the sites they want for development, virtually every open space in our city is up for grabs. “This government raid on our green spaces means that if we want any protection or high development standards across the city, we have to accept their demands. “Otherwise the whole of Brighton and Hove will be exposed to the fullblown effects of the government’s National Planning Policy Framework and a virtual free-for-all for developers. “Of course homes are needed -

but new developments have to be appropriate. “This is yet another appalling example of the government’s dodgy definition of localism.” He called the government’s policy a “developers’ charter” and urged councillors of all parties to support the proposals being put before the council’s policy and resources committee next Friday (July 11). He said that these at least provided protection for parks and playing fields, cemeteries, ancient monuments, and sites of special scientific interest. Councillor Mac Cafferty said that the 39 sites would not necessarily be turned over to builders and they accounted for just 7% of the urban fringe. He said: “This won’t solve the problem. It’s our way of saying we are looking under every stone.” Even if they were turned into
housing, they would provide just 1,060 extra homes out of a shortfall of up to 12,000. The total area being offered up is 31 hectares, or almost 77 acres, compared with the 45 hectares or 111 acres at Toads Hole Valley, one edge-of-town site already allocated for housing. Labour councillors will be discussing the proposals in the next few days. Last night, Warren Morgan, the Labour Group leader, said he had “grave concerns”. He said: “The city finds itself in this situation thanks to the deeplyflawed National Planning Policy Framework brought in by the Tory government at Westminster, which is weighted heavily in favour of developers.” Are any of the sites in your backyard? Stonewall names city as best in the country for tackling homophobic bullying in schools Brighton and Hove City Council has been named the top local authority in the country for tackling homophobic and biphobic bullying in schools. Stonewall, the pressure group, has put the council in first place in its 2014 Education Equality Index, which rates the performance of different councils using a wide range of measures. Stonewall has described the council as "leading the way" in celebrating difference and supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. It also praised the work the council does jointly with local charity the Allsorts Youth Project. Young people from Allsorts have delivered training to council and school staff and provided antihomophobic bullying sessions in secondary personal, social and health education (PSHE) lessons
as well as in primary school assemblies. Stonewall praised Blatchington Mill School for a Student Equality Conference it held earlier this year, which was attended by 60 students from five secondary schools; it also praised St Nicolas’ Primary School for the innovative work it has done on challenging the use of homophobic language in the playground. Councillor Sue Shanks, chair of the council’s children and young people committee, said: “We want all our young people to be proud of who they are and to be able to make the best of their talents without fear or prejudice. “In our schools young people are active participants in our anti-bullying work. We give them the chance to talk about their experiences, and a lot of the excellent work Allsorts does is
carried out by their young peer educators. “This is a proud moment for our city. Our schools, the council’s educational standards and achievement team and Allsorts deserve a great deal of praise for all the hard work they put into this very important area.” Jess Wood, director of Allsorts, said: “The council and our schools have done amazing work this year and deserve this great recognition. "We cannot praise the schools highly enough. They have taken on the issues and worked tirelessly to change things for the better. “We all work closely together and this mutual support and enthusiasm has made our schools and our city a safer place for LGBT children and young people.”
The Green Party is proposing a 5.9% rise in council tax next year. Council leader Jason Kitcat said the rise was necessary to plug a growing financial hole in the finances of Brighton and Hove City Council. Councillor Kitcat said the growing demand for services and the cut in support from the government meant a gap of about £25 million. Even with a 5.9% rise - which would trigger a referendum next May - the gap would still be just over £20 million. As a result, spending will have to be cut with adult social care and children’s services - two of the biggest spending budgets - bearing the brunt of any reductions. Cllr Kitcat said: “It’s really tough. Our job is to do the best we can for the city. We have set out what we think is the only responsible option.” Last year, the Greens proposed a 4.75% rise, which was rejected by opposition Conservative and Labour councillors. Councillor Warren Morgan, leader of the opposition Labour Group, said: “Our position will remain the same. We do not believe that the financial impact of millions
Jason Kitcat is standing down as a councillor at the next election
of pounds in cuts to local services by the Conservative-led government should not be passed on to residents by the Green-led council.” He added: “We will not let the Greens push them further down that route with massive tax increases.” Cllr Kitcat said that 17,000 of the city’s 125,000 households qualified for help with their council tax bills so the poorest would be protected. He welcomed a wide public debate like the one hosted by the Brighton and Hove Independent earlier this year and urged people to make their voices heard. It is "make-or-break" year, see page 4

Mike Weatherley to stand down as Hove MP at general election Frank le Duc @BHcitynews Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove, is to stand down at the next election. Mr Weatherley, 57, was elected at the last general election in 2010 and has served as Prime Minister David Cameron’s intellectual property (IP) adviser since last September. He suffered cancer of the oesophagus two years ago and needed major surgery, but has never spoken publicly about his health. Mr Weatherley, a chartered management accountant, is expected to return to the creative industries having worked as the European vice-president of the Motion Picture Licensing Company before becoming an MP. He started Rock the House in 2010, parliament’s biggest competition, which raises awareness of intellectual property rights and the importance of live music while encouraging young talent. He also launched a similar competition, Film the House, with this year’s winners of both competitions being announced earlier this week. Mr Weatherley also successfully campaigned for a change in the law to criminalise squatting in people’s homes.
Seafront
Roadworks until autumn Roadworks on the seafront are expected to drag on until the end of September. Brighton and Hove City Council announced yesterday they have completed their investigations into the King's Road collapse on April 25, but they expect work along the road to continue until September 30.
In a letter to the Prime Minister today he wrote: “It is after profound consideration that I write to inform you that I will not be standing for re-election at the general election in 2015. “I have nothing but huge admiration for the work of the government over the past four years, including what has been done to get our economy back on track." In a separate statement, Mr Weatherley said: “This has been an exceptionally difficult decision to make. It has been a remarkable opportunity to represent the wonderful residents of Hove and Portslade in parliament and I look forward to continuing to do this until the election near year.” Geoffrey Theobald, leader of the Conservative Group on Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “Mike has been an excellent hardworking MP who has always stood up in parliament for the residents of Hove and Portslade. "On a personal basis, Mike has been, and remains, a very good friend and I have always valued his advice and support. He has also always worked very closely with the Conservative Group on the council to good effect. He has been passionate in campaigning to make squatting a criminal offence and, as a result, is one of the select few backbench MPs who has managed to get legislation on the books." Linda Freedman, chair of
Brighton and Hove Conservatives, said: “We are all incredibly sad that Mike won’t be re-standing. He has been a seriously effective representative for Hove and Portslade over the past four years. Nothing stands still in politics though so our discussions as to what happens next are already far advanced. We’ll be making an announcement on this point shortly.” The Hove MP won changes in squatting law

Ambitious expansion plans for Sussex University’s Falmer campus were rejected by Brighton and Hove City Council. Reasons given included the loss of trees, fears the development would create a “dense urban environment” in proximity to the South Downs National Park, and a feeling the plan failed to respect Sir Basil Spence’s original concept. But the bigger issue, to my mind, is the obsession with continual university expansion. Sussex’s master plan, of which this development is a key component, envisages an increase in student numbers from the current 13,000 to 18,000 by 2018. Some 2,530 new student rooms would have been on campus, the rest in the city - 800 having already been scheduled for the London Road and Pelham Street developments. Meanwhile, Brighton University, with 21,000 students, plans to expand to 25,000. Spence intended his 1960s campus for just 800 students. Back then, only a minority of young people aspired to a university education, despite generous grants. Nowadays, government policy wants half the population to enjoy higher education. More and more universities have accordingly been set up, or dignified with the name (Brighton was a polytechnic until 1992). We now have 150, turning out 300,000 graduates a year. An increasing proportion of the student multitudes on these campuses are from overseas. When I was a student back in the 1960s, the make-up of my Oxford college was 99% British, with the odd American, Indian or Chinese. Now, a third of its students are from overseas. Similarly, Sussex recently announced that for the first time fewer than half its postgraduate students are British, the rest coming from 104 different countries, including 829 Chinese. Foreign students, from being a rarity, have become an essential “cash cow”, without which our swollen universities allegedly would collapse. Yet many are poorly qualified, and their presence compromises academic integrity. A Sudanese friend was shocked while on an electrical engineering course by a Saudi fellow-student, who was unable to complete a form in English, and who “still did not know Ohm’s law in his third year”, yet who went home qualified. Two Chinese girls I knew could also barely speak English, yet apparently
While Sir Basil Spence’s original concept envisaged 800 students, Sussex University now has 13,000 students
satisifed the examiners in their politics and economics written exams. Saif Gaddafi’s PhD from the LSE, or the antics of playboy Bo Guagua at Balliol College, tarnished those institutions’ reputations. Some 50,000 students, we have just learned, are fraudulently here through corrupt language testing. Dozens of universities and colleges are under investigation. According to Professor Susan Bassnett, of Warwick University, “universities have colluded with this situation for years and successive governments have turned a blind eye because it has enabled them to continue to cut higher education funding”. Dissenting from the expansionist culture, one leading academic, Sir Roderick Floud - provost of Gresham College, London, and former president of Universities UK recently opined that Britain had “too many universities” and half of them ought to be closed or merged. “We
don’t need two or more universities in each of our major cities, glowering at each other and competing to attract the attentions of businesses and local authorities.” He cited Leeds, Sheffield and Oxford, and could surely have added Brighton to his list of academically over-endowed cities. London, he noted, now boasts “40 universities within the M25 and more arriving by the day”. He thought they all now attempt to do too many things at once: research, conferences, stock-market investment, property management, science parks, “and even running bus services”. In fact, one sometimes has the impression that providing British students with a humane and useful education is no longer their top priority.

Living With It by Lizzie Enfield This is a compelling family drama that concentrates the mind most wonderfully on the detail and nuances of family life. And what the consequences are of one decision made some time ago that seemed such a tiny little thing. But, as we all know, tiny little things have a habit of coming back to haunt us. Isobel – with the implicit agreement of her husband – chooses not to have her daughter jabbed with the MMR vaccine. Years later, the consequences are tragic for two very close friends and their small child. The tussles and dilemmas that any family has are magnified to breaking point in this vivid portrayal of family lives under the magnifying glass. It is also incredibly sniggermaking when it comes to two middle-class families going
on holiday together. Enfield pinpoints the seemingly-trivial details that can make or break such an outing with a forensic attention to detail – and, in consequence, has us wincing and smiling at the same time. The petty jealousies and the unspoken but very real tensions between the adults are only too familiar to us all, I suspect, and therefore make wonderful reading. This is a stylish, understated book that can be read on many levels. I read into the ending a different one than the author perhaps intended. Although I am not sure. When one decision changes everything the outcome can indeed be lethal.
Lizzie Enfield will be appearing at The Bookish Supper Society’s garden party on Wednesday, July 30. Tickets from Tabl.com, or Dome Ticket Office: 01273 709709.

Do you like to be beside the seafront? Not when it’s wretchedly maintained Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland
Following last week’s article, I have been asked by many readers to list some of the pathetic examples of mismanagement by current and previous administrations in our city. As I cannot take up the entire newspaper, I have restricted my examples to the seafront. This is the same seafront, by the way, that is going to encourage 750,000 visitors a year to pay £15 a head to experience the wonders of the i360. In order that I do not get started on this much fabled seventh wonder of the world, however, let us start by exiting Whitehawk-on-Sea - or "The Marina" as those who love it prefer the wretched place to be known - and work westward from there. As we pass along the A259 with the elegant Sussex Square and Lewes Crescent on our right, we notice day-in, day-out - and, in fact, year-in, year-out - the unfinished works to the seafront end of the gardens, along with the ritualistic metal barriers we have all come to accept as part of the scenery. As we bounce along the poorlymaintained A259, if we look to the left we can just see the sad and neglected Madeira Drive

Celebrating excellence
Volunteers worth £127m
A bomb disposal unit were called to a house in Brighton after Sussex Police officers found a cache of weapons including a hand grenade. The force said: “Police officers got slightly more than they bargained for, they discovered a haul of 30 rifles and 40 handguns at the home in Larkfield Way. “The rifles had been decommissioned but many of the handguns were live and loaded. A World War Two hand grenade was also found in the house and the bomb disposal unit were called to make it safe.”
A Brighton school celebrated the sporting success and entrepreneurial excellence of its students at a prizegiving ceremony. The Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) held its first Sports and Entrepreneurship Awards at its Falmer campus. Dylan Davies, the headteacher, welcomed hundreds of pupils and parents who packed the main hall: “For me, tonight is the culmination of the year and celebrates all that is best in our academy.”
How should we value volunteering? In Brighton and Hove it could be worth £127 million to the local economy. The city’s third sector has an estimated income of about £73 million a year, employs 6,900 people and contributes about £127 million to the local economy. But a new report by Brighton and Hove Community Works says: “Many of the useful outcomes of the sector can’t easily be translated into financial figures.”

New carers wanted

In 1983, Marian Ferguson and her husband decided to become foster carers for Brian, a young boy with Down's Syndrome. Wind the clock forward 31 years to the present day - and Brian is still happily living with Marian. It is a success story that has come about through Brighton and Hove City Council’s "Shared Lives" scheme. Shared Lives links up vulnerable adults with carers who provide support and accommodation in their own home. It’s like fostering, but for adults who need extra support rather than children. The Shared Lives team is looking for more carers. It can be either on a full-time, short-breaks or sessional basis.
Brighton’s Toy and Model Museum has announced one of the ventures that will form part of its 25th Anniversary celebration in 2016. The “Toys in the Community” oral history project is being funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and will be centred on 25 interviews with people of all ages in the city about their childhood memories of toys they played with. The museum – based in Trafalgar Street underneath Brighton Station – is looking for contributors to take part in the initiative, and is holding a drop in event on Wednesday July 9th from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
Literacy heroes honoured A school in Woodingdean has won a national award from a key national body for their work helping children who have struggled with their reading. Rudyard Kipling Primary School and Nursery was named top school in the ‘Exceptional Strategic Management of Literacy in a School’ category at the annual Institute of Education "Reading Recovery" awards in London. Reading Recovery is a specialist programme that enables the lowest achieving children aged five or six to reach age-expected levels within 20 weeks. It involves one-to-one lessons for 30 minutes every day with a specially trained teacher.

TAKEPART The two-week TakePart Festival has gone from strength to strength in the sunshine enjoyed by Brighton and Hove. The festival is organised by the Sports Development Team at Brighton and Hove City Council, which works with local sports clubs and groups to promote the range of activities that take place across the city with the aim of helping people lead active lifestyles. More than 10,000 people joined in an opening afternoon of sport, dance and activity in the sunshine in Preston Park. Since then, more local events have been a big success, often attracting hundreds of participants. One of the organisers said: "Most of the events are up from last year, being busier and we’ve had great feedback from clubs and groups in the city." With fine weather forecast, TakePart is looking forward to a great finale this weekend, when one of the main events will be the Paddle Round the Pier. Generation Rent: What the politicians have to say Andy Winter @AndyWinterBHT
The general election is just 45 weeks away. Housing is right at the top of the concerns of the electorate. In Brighton and Hove, one third of all households live in privately-rented accommodation. Many complain about the practices of letting agencies, high rents, and insecurity. They are known as "Generation Rent", people of all ages for whom the prospect of home ownership has become a cruel hoax, and who are now being priced out of the rental market. I recently wrote to the city's
three Members of Parliament and the candidates of the main political parties who will be challenging them next May, asking what they and their political parties would be offering renters after 2015 on issues including high rents, insecure tenancies, and poor practice by some landlords and, in particular, letting agencies. I was delighted that all three MPs and five of the six candidates sent responses. They were sincere, and all recognised the importance of the issue. There was a broad consensus that tenants - and, in my opinion, landlords - need to be protected from rogue letting agents. There was not complete agreement
Purna Sen pictured with supporters have launched policies
regarding the length of tenancies. I have posted the full text of each response on my blog and I will certainly follow up on their commitments should they get elected. Once the election is over, the boot is on the other foot and we become subject to the decisions of politicians. But before the election, given that they need the support of the public, and most will court the indirect endorsement of the community and charity sectors, we should not be afraid, without entering into party political campaigning, to raise issues on behalf of our clients, members and communities. The result in 87 marginal constituencies could be decided by Generation Rent, including all three in Brighton and Hove. So please do see exactly what the contenders are saying, by visiting: www.andywinterbht. wordpress.com Andy Winter is chief executive of BHT (Brighton Housing Trust). Labour plans to bolster rights of tenants Labour leaders have announced plans to strengthen tenants’ rights and root out unscrupulous landlords, if the party wins power in May next year. They confirmed they will consult about the introduction of a licensing regime for all privatesector accommodation in the city. The proposals are based on a scheme in the London borough of Newham, where more than 30,000 licences have been issued since February last year. They would see landlords pay a fee for a five-year licence to rent out property. To receive a licence, landlords would have to demonstrate their ability to maintain their property to standards agreed with the council. Landlords would be required to undertake tenancy management arrangements that gave protected tenants' rights. Councillor Chaun Wilson, Labour’s housing spokesperson said: "With the largest private rented sector in England outside London, it is only right we look at measures to strengthen tenants' rights and protect them from poor quality housing. "Building on the proposals previously announced by Ed
Chaun wilson
Miliband this would bring much needed stability and security to those living in the private rented sector and again demonstrates the positive difference electing a Labour government in 2015 would bring to people living in Brighton and Hove." Purna Sen, Labour's parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavilion - who is running a consultation on tenants' needs said: "High housing costs and the shortage of council and other social housing mean more and more of the city’s single people and young families are renting privately - 45% more than in 2001; 30% of local housing stock is now privately rented. With such a high proportion of our neighbours in this sector we want to be sure that they are in safe, decent accommodation that they can afford."

A keen cyclist back in the saddle With the Tour de France nearly upon us, we take a look at a cycling enthusiast’s partial knee replacement which put him on the road to recovery. The knee is one of the most commonly affected joints of osteoarthritis and can hinder both young and old.1 Mr Sandeep Chauhan, Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Specialist at the Montefiore Hospital, Hove says: “Around 35,000 people in the United Kingdom suffer with debilitating arthritis within their knees and often this requires a total or partial knee replacement”. David Butler, a very active patient in his early 50’s, suffered ongoing pain for around 12 years before finally undergoing
Unicompartmental (partial) Knee Replacement surgery in November 2013 at the Montefiore Hospital, under the care of Mr Chauhan. For Mr Butler, a keen cyclist as well as a fitness coach, it was felt that surgery was the best option available to reduce pain and improve mobility to fit his active lifestyle. Mr Chauhan advises: “Unicompartmental Knee Replacement surgery allows surgeons to work with very small incisions, which enables patients to return to activities much more quickly than patients who have had total knee replacement surgery”. Mr Chauhan utilises advanced technology during surgery to accurately position the implants specifically to the individual
patient, ensuring consistency and reproducibility. The results reported in a major combined British/European orthopaedic meeting in June 2014 showed that not only do patients gain the expected rapid short-term recovery, but the five-year results do show superior outcomes over conventional techniques.2 Mr Butler, who owns his own cycling and fitness coach business; 48PTC, says: “I had been living with increasing amounts of pain and discomfort that had begun to affect my passion for cycling, not to mention impacting my professional life as a fitness coach. "Following my consultation, Mr Chauhan recommended Unicompartmental Knee Replacement surgery. It was good to know that there was an alternative to a total knee replacement procedure. I felt all options were discussed thoroughly ensuring I was offered the right solution to fit me personally. “The operation itself was absolutely fine. The hospital is excellent with fantastic facilities and is very comfortable. "The staff were extremely caring and informative and I felt supported from start to finish. I’d
like to especially thank the nurses and physiotherapists who aided me post-surgery. “Of course some pain is to be expected following an operation, but once I was home I ditched the crutches, did the exercises as recommended by the physiotherapist and within one week I was back to work. "Within five weeks I was increasing my activity levels and was even able to ski. I was back on the road cycling again after two months and within five months had climbed the Pyrenees as part of 300km cycling tour. I am now no longer in pain, have improved movement, am cycling more efficiently and comfortably and have no need for inflammatories. “My advice for anyone considering similar surgery is to find the surgeon you feel comfortable with, even if it takes
several referrals. Be positive and embrace the rehabilitation exercises, be fit and strong before surgery and set goals to work towards with your recovery”. Mr Chauhan has regular clinics at the Spire Montefiore Hospital in Hove. Celebrating business in our city Sarah Springford @brightonchamber
Today (Friday), Brighton & Hove Chamber of Commerce host the biggest event of the year – the Brighton Summit. To celebrate, we’ve compiled a few facts to quantify what has been achieved by the Chamber of Commerce so far: ■ Brighton Chamber has doubled in size over the last three years and now has nearly 1000 members. Members are from all sectors, and based in Brighton and Sussex (and even New York!). Whilst a large proportion of the businesses in Brighton are small in terms of the number of staff, Brighton Chamber also has many of the bigger businesses as part of its membership. ■ Brighton Chamber has members from businesses, charities, social enterprises and some public sector organisations. ■ In the last twelve months, Brighton Chamber has over 80 events including State of the City, the Big Debates, Bite-sized Learning sessions, attracting 2900 attendees
■ Brighton Chamber hosts the popular Construction Voice events to give a voice to the construction sector with the city ■ Brighton Chamber is busy on social media with over 8000 followers on Twitter @ brightonchamber ■ Being a Chamber member helps to keep your profile raised with nearly 30,000 unique visits to the business directory ■ The Wayfinder peer-to-peer support sessions run each month and in a recent survey received excellent feedback ■ Brighton Chamber has recruited over 70 volunteer mentors for the NEA (New Enterprise Allowance scheme) start-up businesses in Brighton. ■ Brighton Chamber has provided a number of internships during the last 12 months and helped these graduates to find good jobs as a result. ■ Brighton Chamber has designed and delivered the Ride the Wave business support programme for the last three year. This year’s programme included 11 business support events, 358 businesses took part. ■ Brighton Chamber is contacted by businesses looking for help and advice and dealt with over 3000
enquires from businesses in the last 12 months ■ The Living Wage campaign in Brighton & Hove is run by Brighton Chamber and is in its third year. It has 130 local businesses signed up for the Living Wage Campaign in Brighton & Hove and received funding, enabling us to run it for another year ■ There are lots of ways to get involved with Brighton Chamber – the best way is to join, start coming to events and meet the team to let them know how you’d like to get involved. Sarah Springford is director of Brighton & Hove Chamber of Commerce The Brighton Summit takes place today (Friday) from 9.15am-6pm Venue: Clarendon Centre, 47 New England Street, Brighton BN1 4GQ (5 minutes from Brighton Station and NCP car parking in London Road) Tickets £45 for members and nonmembers www.brightonsummit. com which offers more information on the day Promotional code Summit10 If you have any queries, contact Brighton & Hove Chamber of Commerce 01273 719097.
Brighton Digital Festival opens up for organisers to propose events Brighton Digital Festival today (Friday) opens its website for event submissions from local, national and international event organisers. By officially submitting their event as part of Brighton Digital Festival 2014, organisers will benefit from the festival’s online presence and marketing campaign and be part of the growing citywide festival. Now in its fourth year, the festival has grown consistently, last year drawing in a total audience of over 40,000 people who attended more than 170 events. To participate, events must take place in Brighton and Hove between September 1 and 28 September. Jesse Black Mooney, festival manager for Brighton Digital Festival, said: “The amazing
success of last year's festival programme was made possible through the passion and drive of our community. "Without the dedication to showcasing the diverse palette of activity that takes place in the city, the festival could not exist as it does. “We’re looking forward to seeing the events that our incredibly creative community are planning for 2014, and encourage organisers to submit their events to the Brighton Digital Festival website as soon as possible to make sure they are included in the printed festival programme.” Events must be submitted before July 20 to be included in the printed festival programme, but submissions will stay open until September 1 to be included on the Brighton Digital Festival website. For more information, visit: www. brightondigitalfestival.co.uk.

• Install a water butt to collect rainwater for your garden
It’s easy to be waterwise at home. Just follow these tips
• Use mulches, compost or chipbark to retain soil moisture
Indoors • Use a watering can to water your plants • Use a bucket and sponge to wash the car, not a water-wasting hose
• Fit aerators to taps and cut the water they use by half

e need? Sites on the urban fringe Brighton and Hove city Council, its officers and consultants, have been required to identify sites on the urban fringe that have potential - in part, at least - for building homes in the medium to long term. Inclusion in the list does not mean that homes will definitely be built on the sites. It means homes could be built on them. Council officers believe the 39 sites have potential for 1,180 homes; the sites cover 31 hectares - or just 7.5% of the total area of the urban fringe. Even if all 39 sites were included in the City Plan, it is not know if it will be sufficient to satisfy the independent planning inspector, working within the government’s strict National Planning Policy Framework. 1 Land at Mile Oak Road, Portslade (280 homes) 2 Land at Oakdene, Southwick Hill (27 homes) 3 West of Mile Oak Road, Portslade (25 homes) 4 Land at Hangleton Bottom, Portslade (125 homes) 5 Land at Braypool Lane (two homes) 6 Land at and adjoining Horsdean Recreation Ground, Patcham (30 homes) 7 Land at Ladies Mile, Carden Avenue (35 homes) 8 and 9 Land to North East of Coldean Lane (140 homes)

Ben Shephard Tipping Point: Lucky Stars ITV, 7.30pm We know what you’re thinking: where can we find a show that will fill a dead hour on a Saturday night? One that will hopefully feature Carol Vorderman, that bloke who plays Emmerdale’s Marlon Dingle, and if we’re really lucky, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! veteran Joe Swash? Well, the search ends here as soap star Mark Charnock and all of the above will be taking part in the strangely addictive, Penny Falls-style show. There’s a cool £20,000 up for grabs for one of the celebs’ chosen charities.

An Edwardian double fronted family home, still retaining a wealth of period features including fireplaces, ceiling mouldings and doors. High ceilinged rooms offer light and airy accommodation and the addition of a superb architect designed conservatory at the rear gives the property a very spacious feel.
A Regency period double fronted home, circa 1824. Not only does this unique home have its own private patio and large sunny roof terrace but it also enjoys access to the delightful private Kemp Town enclosures which are 6 hectares of landscaped private gardens with access to the seafront.
Ballards Mill is a select development of three newly constructed homes and the modernisation of the former Mill House. This is the last house to be taken to the market as the others have already been sold. The property is located on a wide plot and situated within a private road accessed from Overhill Drive, Patcham Village via electric gates.

Lasting Powers of Attorney Have you have ever wondered about Lasting Powers of Attorney? What one is, what do they cost, whether you should have one and when is a good time to have one prepared for you? At Crosby & Woods we see many situations arise where the absence of a Lasting Power of Attorney (‘LPA’) already being in force can and does cause untold distress and inconvenience both
to the incapacitated person and also to their immediate family & friends with responsibility for looking after them. We hope this short guide assists the reader in understanding this sensitive but also very important issue and will help you decide if now is the right time for you to make suitable arrangements for the future. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows
you to legally appoint the people you trust to make decisions on your behalf should you ever be unable to make the decisions for yourself. The LPA will normally become active when someone is incapacitated by unforeseen ill health (which can strike any of us at any time) or for example where someone has a long term degenerative illness/ condition such as dementia or

There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney that are available: A Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney covers decisions about your finances and property. If there comes a time when you are unable to manage your daily finances anymore, the Attorney will do this for you, for example by organising the payment of your bills on your behalf. A Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney allows your Attorney to make important decisions about your health and welfare should there come a time when you are unable due to illness or incapacity to make these decisions for yourself. For example, your Attorney can organise your day-to-day care, and make decisions on your diet and what you wear. If you do not make a Lasting Power of Attorney and in the future lack capacity to make these important decisions for yourself, then it may be necessary to make an application to the Court of Protection for an appropriate order, such as appointing another person to make decisions on your behalf. Not only is this process both costly and time consuming, the person appointed may not end up being your personal choice of who you would like to be dealing with your affairs. As part of our commitment to
helping raise awareness of this issue, one that is likely to affect all of us at some stage in our life, and to also provide a professional and affordable service that will allow as many people as possible to be able to properly manage their future affairs in an orderly and dignified way, we are offering readers of this paper the following discounted rates for all new instructions received between 1st May and 31st May 2014. I adore roast chicken. At home, I tear the freshly-cooked bird apart as soon as my asbestos fingers will allow, demolishing crisp skin and using chunks of meat to mop up the juices and sticky bits from the pan. And so I had high hopes for Crafty Chooks. In its own words, “a bar and casual dining venue that specialises in great freerange chicken and craft beer”. We went on a Tuesday evening and the place was buzzing, packed inside and on the outdoor terrace. We were greeted warmly by the lovely staff. Décor is great: stripped-back wood, exposed brickwork and leather banquettes, splashes of red and yellow, and walls of mirrors enhancing the natural light. We sat by the window, overlooking Second Avenue, bathed in glorious sunshine, and quickly ordered two halves of hoppy, citrusy Freedom Four. The menu covers all bases with a focus on European dishes, and a strong emphasis on chicken.
Coffee Chronicles Macchiato means “marked” in Italian. It’s more proof of why we need to use the Italian lingo - see what we did there? - because some stuff just sounds so much more appealing when it’s not translated. You can have an Espresso Macchiato (coffee marked with milk) or a Latte Macchiato (milk marked with coffee), so there’s
Décor is great: stripped-back wood, exposed brickwork and leather banquettes We started with a crayfish and prawn cocktail (£5.95), and grilled buttermilk halloumi and aubergine kebabs (£6.25). The prawn cocktail was decent with that classic tang, but my friend a halloumi addict - felt her cheese could have been more crisp and flavourful. For our main, we decided to share a whole spit-roast chicken (£16.95) with house seasoning and a choice of BBQ sauce (smokey, spicy or sweet), plus double-cooked chunky chips (£2.95) and coleslaw (£3.25).
by @LittleCoffeeCo quite a big difference in taste; the former is really strong and small; the latter is really weak and massive. And you must now agree that both sound terrible in English. Surely, simple menu annotation would prevent any confusion? Yes, that would be true, if it were not for a certain chain.
Grape of the Week
We opted to carve the chicken ourselves at the table, which was fun, and the side portion sizes were generous. The golden, almost charred, chicken looked enticing, yet the skin was not at all crisp, while the succulent meat lacked flavour and could have done with a good whack of seasoning. The coleslaw was fresh and crunchy, yet was also under-seasoned and not at all sharp enough. The chips had seen a shake of salt, but had suffered a little from perhaps sitting around a touch too long
Without naming names (Starbucks), we are being incorrectly educated, creating disappointment with every Macchiato ordered anywhere except in that nameless chain. The Seattle-based coffee company has created the abomination that is the Caramel Macchiato. Their wonderful command of the Italian language has convinced them that the word Latte is apparently unnecessary in this sacrilegious concoction’s moniker. Cue hoards of laptop-wielding
after leaving the fryer. The BBQ sauces were spot on flavourwise, but the consistency, more of a thin gravy, was not great. Crafty Chooks has so much potential. The venue and staff are fantastic, and the portions are large - something that pleases me greatly. The chicken, however, needs to be the star of the show - moreish, deeply savoury, and demanding a return visit. We felt it was not, as the website promised, “the juiciest and most flavoursome around”. Offering just BBQ sauce is limiting, too - although we were provided with mayo and ketchup. Some other homemade sauce options would be nice - maybe a spiky garlicky aioli or basil and tarragon mayonnaise? We really wanted to love the food at Crafty Chooks, and left feeling full yet disappointed. If they can ramp up their flavours and find a way to get the chicken to the diner before it loses its crisp skin, they will be onto a winner. 20-somethings expecting giant mugs of milk with a dash of coffee, a mountain of cream, and a drizzle of inverted cane sugar. We do not have a Macchiato on our menu, but we will make you an Espresso Macchiato, if you like. If you would like a caramel-based beverage, with little to no caffeine content, but the opportunity to look like you are having a grownup drink, when you’re actually downing a pint of milk and your entire daily sugar allowance, pay a visit to that anonymous chain.
The Merlot grape - in France since the late 18th century - is by far the most widelyplanted grape in French vineyards and the fifth most common variety worldwide. It takes its name from the French word merle, meaning blackbird, perhaps due to the grape’s distinctive darkblue/black hue - or possibly to the fact that the sweet, early-ripening fruit is a favorite of young blackbirds that inhabit the vineyards of southern France. A central figure in the production of the famous wines of Bordeaux, it thrives in the heavy clay/limestone soil of the Pomerol and St Emilion regions. Some of the finest wines in the world are produced there. A good example is Petrus, which regularly sells for upwards of £1,000 a bottle and is made entirely from Merlot grapes. The wines it produces are soft and mellow with a delightful fruitiness to them. Deep-red and tasting of dark fruits, these wine are a favorite at both the lunch and dinner table. They also make excellent drinking wines. Try matching Merlot wines with meat, lamb, veal and stewed dishes. Mushrooms, chicken and pork also work very well. Without question, it is one of the best varieties to accompany a good cheese board.

An open-water event with a warm Mediterranean welcome Tom Gallagher @GallagherTDG
As the wonderful sport of openwater swimming continues its rise in popularity, so more and more of the world has opened to host events and provide exciting new destinations to explore. Europe’s oceans and waterways, in particular, throb with openwater opportunities and - in an environmentally-preserved corner of the Italian Mediterranean - a small and craggy island is set to host only its fourth open-water contest. Swim the Island is an event that features three distances of 1.8km, 3.5km, and 6km. Held in the Italian Marine Protected Area of Bergeggi, a little further north of the French coast that arcs into Italy, each of the three distances take in Bergeggi Island - circumnavigating it in both the 3.5 and 6km distances. Taking place on October 5, the event utilises a Mediterranean sea that has spent the summer warming its cockles; as a consequence, the water temperatures hover around the 21-24°C mark; wetsuits are optional. This and the nature of the location itself, sheltered in parts by a headland and open and choppy in others, ensure that the swim is accessible to all grades of openwater swimmer. Therefore, the rise in popularity of this new European adventure has been quick. So quick, in fact, that organisers saw 800 participants from 14 countries in last year’s race. And this year organisers estimate entry numbers to top around the 1,200 mark. Friends and family will want to be dragged along to the European
open-water escapade, since this protected area of the Mediterranean offers a travel experience in its own right. The small town of Bergeggi sits atop the rocky coastline and looks down upon the island that, legend has it, floated from the African coastline to rest on the Liguarian coast. Here, the Bergeggi Heights, ancient watchtowers, and Roman remains speak of indomitable history. The ruins of a 10thcentury monastery can be found on the island; across its diminutive circumference, measures have been put in place to protect its natural gifts. The town of Bergeggi’s narrow alleys and streets, known as “carruggi’, are a common feature among the villages of the Liguria region. They lead here to a remarkable promenade over a sheer drop that plunges straight to the sea. Throughout this part of the Italian Riviera, which became a reserve in 1985 - thanks in part to its proliferation of native Mediterranean flora and fauna - there can be found stunning beaches, lapped by waters famed for clarity. Despite the proximity of the town

and the civilisation of the beach, as it is today, the coastline adjacent to the island is wild and carved by nature. The journey to Bergeggi will likely be from a base in the town of Spotorno, a seaside resort along the coast between Bergeggi and Noli. Here. most of the accommodation can be found and the town has a charming old centre that reflects its history of Genoese gentrification and burgeoning marine industry and commerce. Spotorno is surrounded by hills bulging with vineyards and apricot trees, and it is something of a centre for adventure sports with cycling, paragliding, and a host of water sports available. The unassuming island that has seen empires rise and fall now figures centrally in one of the clutch of Europe’s newest open-water events. And it provides a wonderful excuse for a long weekend. Jordan and Prior named in England squad for India Test
England selectors today announced a 13-man squad for the 1st Investec Test against India commencing Wednesday, July 9 at Trent Bridge, which includes Sussex stars Chris Jordan and Matt Prior. Alastair Cook’s squad consists of the 12 players selected for the recent Test series against Sri Lanka as well as 23 year old Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes. Stokes has played four Tests so far in his international career, making his debut against Australia in Adelaide last year. The Test series will be the first
time since 1959 that India have played five Test matches on an England tour. National selector, James Whitaker, said: “The selectors would like to congratulate all the players selected in the squad for the 1st Investec Test against India and in particular Ben Stokes who returns to the squad having worked hard to regain his fitness following an injury this winter. “This series against India will no doubt be a tough one and the selectors would like to wish Peter Moores, Alastair Cook, the coaches and players all the best for a good
performance next week at Trent Bridge.” England squad Alastair Cook (Essex) (Capt) Moeen Ali (Worcestershire) James Anderson (Lancashire) Gary Ballance (Yorkshire) Ian Bell (Warwickshire) Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire) Chris Jordan (Sussex) Liam Plunkett (Yorkshire) Matt Prior (Sussex) Sam Robson (Middlesex) Joe Root (Yorkshire) Ben Stokes (Durham) Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)
Straight from Brighton Racecourse Harry Bentley believes Brighton can help re-boot his bid for the big time. The Sussex jockey was a rising star as an apprentice, coming close to lifting the championship title. And when he sealed a deal with mega-rich Ahmed Al Sheikh Fahad from Qatar he seemed to be on his way. But Bentley, 22, has struggled to take off in his second full year riding off the same weight as his rivals. And he knows he needs to step up the wins-to-rides ratio. That is where Brighton – the track which saw Bentley finish second on Cherry Princess this week - steps in. He said to Brighton & Hove Independent: “This year has been difficult so far. I’ve got a good retainer with Sheikh Fahad. “He has a lot of horses but not many running and I’m only second jockey to Jamie Spencer. It is quite difficult getting spare, outside rides. A lot of people are in the same boat. “I always knew it would be hard when I lost my claim. You are on a level playing field with the likes of Ryan Moore and Richard Hughes.
“Yet how hard has surprised me to an extent because if you get a retainer you would think it would make it easier. “But Brighton has been quite a lucky track for me even though it is a hard one to ride. Cherry Princess ran well. At a good gallop. I don’t mind riding Brighton as I can get a few more winners. Once you start getting a few firsts, especially in big races, things snowball. “I’m still hungry to make it to the top.” Hayley Turner is another rider at Brighton this week who has had a quiet year. Her career has slowed since chipping her pelvis and fracturing three bones in her back last September. She bagged a second and a fourth at the Racehill meeting. Upper Beeding handler Gary Moore, with a base in Brighton and father of superstar pilot Ryan, ensured the county a victory through Birdie Queen.

Whilst the Argentine was all smiles in training this week, speculation that he wants a crack at the Premier League sooner rather than later continues to spread. Leicester have had a number of bids rebuffed over the summer, however, for the right price – believed to be around the £10m mark -the 27-year-old may be allowed to leave, which would leave a gaping hole in the Seagull’s strike force. putting together a side with both youth and experience, along with a style that doesn’t rely on trying to play possession-based football – a departure from what we saw under Garcia and his predecessor Gus Poyet. However, with the players now back in training at the state-ofthe-art American Express Elite Performance Football Centre (Hopefully they find a shorter name or a fancy acronym for the place!) in Lancing ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday) opener at Lewes, fans will be expecting the new boss to deliver on his words with actions. The primary concern amongst the Seagulls support is player acquisitions to ensure the club can compete at the top end of the Championship once again. We have yet to see new names added to the squad under Sami, although the signing of midfielder Toko Nzuzi from Grasshopper Zurich was announced prior to
Newly appointed manager, Sami Hyypia, hopes to take Albion onto the next level transfer window, with only two recognised strikers in the squad at least one more is needed to support him and Craig MackailSmith. If Garcia had a tough time of it last year in the Championship, it’s fair to say that Hyypia it will be even tougher. The six new sides in the division - Cardiff, Fulham and Norwich from the Premier League, Brentford, Rotherham and Wolves from League One – will be considerably tougher than the ones they’ve replaced. In particular, the Premier League sides that were relegated come in with bumper Parachute Payments and a healthy financial package thanks to the latest TV rights deal that went effect last season. The fact Fulham have just stumped up £10m for Ross McCormack highlights the financial gulf between those sides coming down and those that have yet to experience the top flight gravy train. Add in Financial Fair Play rules, and it’s easy to see how the likes of Brighton will struggle to compete in some aspects of the transfer market for the best players.
However, Albion will still attract good players because of the facilities on offer to players, the location, and the prospect of what lies ahead in the future. Premier League Football in Sussex is not spoken about as “if” Brighton will get there. It’s when they get there. Whether this year is the year is hard to say. All the pieces of the puzzle that is the squad have yet to be put together, and as with Oscar, the first year in the Championship will be a learning curve for Sami. However, the important thing for fans to keep in mind is that patience is a virtue. It will take time for Hyypia to bed in how he wants the side to play, and in such a competitive league winning every week is something that can’t be expected. If the performances are right and the results keep us in touch at the top end of the table come May 2015, then Sami would have done a good job. We can’t expect miracles, because in football things can change quickly, but a top six finish would once again be a great result for the club, and offers us that chance of reaching the promised land of the Premier League.

Paddle Round The Pier
Your guide to this year's festival Aloha, Welcome to the 2014 Paddle Round the Pier Beach Festival. This annual event has grown from very humble beginnings in 1996 into what is now considered to be the World's largest charitable beach festival. Paddle remains one the highlights of Brighton’s summer calendar, with visitor numbers in 2013 of some 55,000, from the city and across the globe who all converge on Hove Lawns to celebrate a little aloha! Paddle Round The Pier is a two day extravaganza where the sea meets the beach and thousands of people enjoy a huge variety of activities, sporting competitions, music and other entertainment. A highlight for 2014 is going to be the Surf Lifesaving competition with competitors coming from 70 clubs around the UK. There’s a few new surprises in there, as always, along with some firm favourites like the Bone Yard Dog Show, strongman contest and look out for the IRB (inshore Rescue Boat) racing display on Sunday morning. Over the past few years, the event has raised over £200,000.00 for the chosen charities and this year we’re looking to increase that figure with your help by supporting the RNLI, Surf Life Saving GB and local children’s cancer support charity Freddysmile. See pages 4 and 5 for more about the charities. It’s worth bearing in mind that this event is organised and run entirely by volunteers many of whom literally take unpaid leave from work to make this event happen. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the “Paddle Crew” for all their tremendous work and dedication to giving our city such a marvellous event. OHANA is the Hawaiian word for family You will see this word on many of the Paddle Crews shirts and hats. This means they have volunteered on Paddle for 4 or more years and literally have become like family! Remember all monies raised are given directly to the charities so please support this event by donating what you can into the buckets carried by our official collectors at the gates and around the event. So on behalf of all the Paddle Crew (our Ohana) We hope you enjoy this year’s “Paddle” and look forward to seeing you back again next year (July 4 and 5 2015).

This year's charities RNLI LIFEBOATS The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24 hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 137,000 lives. Locally at Shoreham, the new boathouse opened in October 2010 following a three year community appeal to raise £1million towards the new build. The station’s new £2.7million Tamar lifeboat, named the Enid Collett, after the late donor whose generous legacy funded the boat, arrived in Shoreham on December 10. She had her first operational shout two days later. All the lifeboat crew and shore helpers, apart from the full time mechanic, at Shoreham are voluntary and are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. At Brighton, the RNLI lifeboat had the busiest winter in recent years for the fully volunteer crew and station personnel.. There have been almost 20
call outs this year already, even before the busy summer season has begun. 2008 was the busiest year since 1824 for the RNLI in Brighton – with over 80 maritime incidents assisting 120 people..

SLSGB Surf Life Saving GB is a charity of 6,000 volunteers helping to make our beaches a safer and more enjoyable place for everyone. SLSGB volunteers have been providing beach lifeguard training and patrolling the coast for more than 55 years. SLSGB clubs are nationwide, training members aged from five years upwards in beach education, lifesaving, rescue and fitness skills, helping create fitter and safer communities by the sea. Surf Life Saving GB is the awarding body for the highest standard of Beach Lifeguard qualification in the country, and is the National Governing Body for Life Saving Sport. Brighton Surf Life Saving Club is regis tered charity, affiliated to the national
organisation Surf Life saving GB (SLSGB). We are an active sports and community club with members of all abilities and ages based on Brighton seafront. In the last 18 months we have success fully launched a youth section which comprises of Nippers (age 7 13) and Juniors (age 13 18). The young folk participate in up to 3 sessions a week in both the pool and the sea which are geared for the children to learn through fun and enjoyment. We are the only club in the UK that go in the sea all year round – even in the snow! Depending on conditions, age and ability the training sessions may include swim ming, paddle boarding, board rescues, tube rescues, towing, line throwing, first
aid and/or beach flags (a sprinting sport). Our aim is to teach young people to be safe by the sea and encourage an active lifestyle. Specifically for the Junior section we aim to have them ready to qualify as a Surf Lifeguard by their 16th birthday.
We are a family based in Lancing, West Sussex. In 2010 we went through the worst time in our lives after our son Freddy was diagnosed with a tumour. During that year, a charity kindly sent our family on a break to the New Forest. It gave us the opportunity to just be a normal family and have time away from hospitals and doctors and let our children just simply be children and have some fun. We decided to set up a charity to try and offer the same opportunity to other children. Our brave son smiled his way through that scary and painful year and he won his battle, and that is why we
called the charity Freddysmile. So that is how it all started… Since that time, with support from so many kind people and many local businesses, we have raised funds to buy three caravans at the Bunn Leisure Holiday Park in Selsey, West Sussex. We have also become the only charity in the UK to provide Hickman line drysuits to allow children with a Hickman line to swim. We are honoured to be one of the beneficiaries for this year’s Paddle Round the Pier. Please feel free to get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you. Find our more at www.freddysmile. co.uk or by calling 0800 432 0322

Urban Athletics
We are a community of people into parkour, freerunning, tricking and street stunting – a real mixture of styles and disciplines. We train in and around Brighton and Hove and we travel to meet up and train with like minded people across the South. Parkour is a quest to find the most efficient method to overcome any obstacle in your path. When you reach a level of mastery, individual movements don’t matter, but much like a martial art, you must build up to this point with a strong foundation of the basics. Once you commit some of the simple, foundation movements to memory, you’re free to move without extraneous thought. Check out the Urban Athletics Crew performing from 12noon daily in the Paddle Village.
Turn & Burn Competition
The Slalom Turn & Burn Competition is back this year thanks to Octane and Ocean Sports. Helmets are mandatory for all races. Sign up by 11:00 on Saturday 5th July on Hove promenade and races will run between 11:00 – 16:30 on both days.
The Sharkbait Surf Tent
Unbeknown to most of Brighton, there is a huge underground community of surfers along the Sussex coast. It was from this community that that the ‘Paddle Round the Pier’ came to being when a bunch of us rounded up by Dave Samuel first met on Hove Lawns, made the paddle together and raised some cash for local charities. After all these years who would have guessed the extent to which this yearly event grew from our first small gathering. This year the festival is giving something back to the local surfers, a tent amongst the ‘village’ showcasing local surfing in the form of art and photography of surfing in Brighton from now and back in the days. Come down and meet the Sharkbait team (www.Sharkbait.co.uk), who have been updating daily surf reports and forecasts for the last 14 years. Visit the tent and have chat about surfing in Brighton

Paddle Round The Pier
Music on the Main Stage Jen Collins, Main Stage director @JenPaddle
In 2006 I, Jen Collins aka Jen Paddle, joined the paddle team, as an avid follower of the Brighton music scene and back then a bit of a party animal. I set about creating a stage with three main aims: 1. To show off the best local music around 2. To help raise as much money as possible for charity 3. To get those paddle supporters dancing their socks off With the help of the wonderful Brunswick pub and Yellowfish Music Studios, 2007’s Paddle Round the Pier festival saw this happen, from then the music stage just took off. Each year more and more great quality bands wanted to get involved and this saw the crowds in search for summertime fun grow into their thousands. To pick even a few highlights from over the years would be simply be too hard as it has all been amazing and this year aims to be no different. There is so much fantastic live music at Paddle Round the Pier this year; you’ll
be in a constant state of shock about the fact that you only donated £1 to get in. The answer to this is to donate more, much more because every penny raised goes to the charities we’re supporting, which this year are RNLI, Freddysmile and SLSGB. Doing our very best to support the local music scene, the majority of the acts performing on stage are from these very pebbly shores and there’s something for everyone: Kiddie rock stars, the heavenly sound of a community choir, singer song writers with voices that will stop you in your tracks, folk, Rock, Pop, Fip Fok (not a clue either), Ska, Electro Funk, Psychedelia, Beat Poetry, Jazz, Gypsy Jazz, Reggae, Swing, rock & roll, rhythm & blues, jump jive & Electro Swing… and take a breath. The live music starts off bright and early both days finishing at 8pm on Saturday and 6pm Sunday. Each day starts off with a slower pace of music slowly building band upon band until you’re nicely warmed up and before you know it, you’re jigging around with your dancing shoes on (which at the Paddle is bare foot), wishing it would never end. So are you sitting comfortably? Because here’s the final line up.

Swims @ Paddle There are 2 Swim categories for 2014: Saturday 5th July sees the 2.5k swim organised by SLSGB – which is open to all. Sunday 6th July sees the 1.25k swim organised by Swim Brighton which is open to all. This year, we are delighted to confirm that there will be two swims over the Paddle weekend for both fun and serious swimmers. The shorter 1.25k fun swim will be on Sunday, July 6 and is being organised by Swimtrek – the world’s leading swimming holiday company and Paddle’s long term partner in Swim Round the Pier. The 2.5k swim will be provided by Surf Life Saving Club GB (SLSGB) – one of this year’s charities. There are wetsuit and non wetsuit categories in both races. Race entry includes an official event swim hat which you will be required to wear for safety reasons..
Saturday, July 5 9.30am
2.5k circular swim from Paddle Village, Hove Lawns Age: 14+ SLSGB bring to you this classic event where you will have a swimmers’ eye view of Hove Lawns and Hove’s classic seafront architecture. There will be both wetsuit and non wetsuit categories (decide on the day!) for both men and women in the following categories: ■ Under 16 (min age 14) ■ Novice ■ Open ■ Elite Race entry is £25. This covers some basic costs of swim hats, petrol for the safety boats, etc. The remainder of the entry fee goes towards this year’s charities. Experience: Confident swimmers with some experience of sea swimming.
Sunday, July 6 9.30am
1.25k fun swim around the iconic West Pier, Brighton Age: 12+ Swimtrek bring to you this beautiful linear swim which begins on Brighton beach between Brighton and West Pier, in the heart of Brighton’s vibrant seafront area and finishes in front of Paddle Village on Hove Lawns. It is a great way for both experienced and inexperienced sea swimmers to complete a swim around Brighton’s iconic West Pier (conditions permitting). It’s a challenging swim for the novice open water swimmer, but the views of the beach and sense of achievement are well worth the effort.
Making acupuncture accessible Brighton Community Acupuncture, which began in 2012, aims to make acupuncture affordable and accessible to all, no matter what your income, by treating people in a multi bed environment. Treatments are offered on a sliding scale from £8 to £25, with people paying what they are able to afford. Like all medicine, acupuncture requires a course of treatment in order to be effective; one treatment often isn’t enough to create a lasting change to a person’s symptoms. The aim of Brighton Community Acupuncture is that people are able to afford as much acupuncture as they
need to get well and stay well. At Brighton Community Acupuncture, treatment couches are divided by partitions to preserve your privacy. There is generally no need to undress for treatment, as the most frequently used points are below the knees and elbows. However, should the need arise to use points above your knees or elbows, or on your back or stomach, blankets are used to keep you warm and covered at all times. Treatments take approximately 45 minutes to one hour. Once the needles are inserted the practitioner is free to start treating someone else, although they will check back
on you regularly throughout your treatment, and will be close at hand should you need them. Practitioners working at Brighton Community Acupuncture are members of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC). They have undergone training to the highest level, abide to high standards of ethics, safe practice and continued professional development.
Race entry is £15. This covers some basic costs of swim hats, petrol for the safety boats, etc. The remainder of the entry fee goes towards this year’s charities. Please note: On the day of the swim you will need to bring an additional pair of flip flops and a light warm jumper/fleece to walk to the start area which is located approximately 15 minute walk from the registration area at the Paddle Village.
We recommend you register on line beforehand as numbers are capped to ensure sufficient level of safety cover. However, if spaces are still available, you will be able to register on the day. Registration will be open from 8.00am in Paddle Village. Please note, all swimmers will need to come to the registration desk before your swim to confirm your attendance and complete essential safety briefings. On the day there will be a bag drop tents. Valuables will be left at your own risk and Paddle cannot accept any liability for lost or damaged items. We recommend bringing a pair of flip flops that can be left on the shingle beach during your swim.

Paddle Round The Pier
Paddle Something Unusual What is “Paddle Something Unusual”? Is it a race? Well kind of It’s a race to be ridiculous and creative... The “Paddle Something Unusual” team event is the perfect opportunity for those less stable in the community to exercise their creativity and join in the Paddle. It’s aimed at businesses, groups of friends, a pub or a club etc. In previous years the crowds have been entertained by everything from an aeroplane to a crane, from a bed to a shed – the only guidelines are to make it as ridiculous (but safe) as possible, raise plenty of money in sponsorship – and have a spectacularly good laugh doing it! Who can Paddle and is it safe? Everyone can enjoy the land based activities of the festival but for common sense sake the organisers ask anyone who is taking part in the water to be able to swim a minimum of 100 metres in the sea. Paddle Director Dave Samuel says: “It’s as safe as your raft building skills are – most of which are normally delightfully dubious! Therefore there are plenty of Lifeguards and Safety boats on duty!” What to Paddle? The rules are simple; it has to be paddled manually have a minimum crew of two (no maximum limit) absolutely no propellers or engines of any kind You must ensure that is seaworthy and capable of making it! That’s it! The entries head around the old West Pier remains so the creations do need to be reasonably capable! Who wins? The joy of this mad cap Sunday lunchtime exploit is that it’s neither the fastest nor the slickest team that will win. It’s simply the entry that makes the crowd, the water safety teams and Paddle Director laugh the most – and they all love a good laugh! Peugeot dealership KAP won in 2013 by paddling a real Peugeot 206 car with its engine removed, closely tailed by Police Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp and his crack team of uniformed Sussex Police officers (apparently they’d spotted the lack of tax disk). Other favourites have been the cowboys with full size wagon train and Thunderbird 2 from PSU legends “the Average Joes”. Raising Money The event has donated over £200k for charity in previous years so there is a strong legacy to continue. The chosen charities for 2014 are, The RNLI, Freddysmile & Surf Life Saving GB. For further information email psu@paddleroundthepier.com Paddle Something Unusual takes place from 12noon on Sunday, July 6

One of these kids could well save your life…"
Helping save lives Surf Life Saving Ask any kid in the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club exactly why they like to go in the sea every week, all year round and the answer is simple “it’s fun”. This vibrant and exciting kids club was formed in March 2012 and quickly went from strength to strength with a constant waiting list for places. Parents are also invited to get involved and undertake training of their own to become a qualified helper or even a beach lifeguard; which results in it often being questioned who’s having more fun in the water, the parents or the kids? The Nippers Club caters for age 7 up to 13 and the Juniors from 13 onwards. The Brighton Club is one of the few SLSGB affiliated clubs in the country where the kids go in the sea all year round (yes even in the snow!). For the winter months the kids all have thick boots,
gloves suits and hoods – which not only instil more confidence in the water but also make them all incredibly buoyant! Each session differs depending on conditions but encompasses CPR, resuscitation and general first aid, sea swims, rescue board paddles, board rescues, flag signals and sprint racing known as “beach flags”. There’s also a fair bit of surfing on the rescue boards when conditions will allow! There are two distinct areas of Surf Lifesaving GB, one is the obvious “saving of lives” and the second is Surf Life Saving as a competitive sport – both mediums are becoming increasingly popular in the UK. Paddle is extremely proud to be hosting the largest SLSGB contest held outside of the West Country this year. You will see competitors from across the UK compete in all age ranges from Nippers to Masters. The clubs are a friendly bunch so stop and have a chat – it’s a great activity to get involved in.
Paddle working in conjunction with BSLSC now host the Sussex Schools Junior Lifeguard program for four weeks leading up to the Paddle Round The Pier weekend. Brightons Peugeot dealership KAP have kindly sponsored this scheme for the second year running to allow kids from across Sussex the chance to experience both life saving first aid training but also to get wet and use the lifeguard equipment for a day. The reach this year has been 800 pupils. All schools in the area are invited to take part so if you haven’t heard about this before – hassle you head teacher for 2015! One day, using the skills

attained at these sessions, one of these kids could well save your life… This is the serious point The National Water Safety Forum, of which Surf Life Saving is a founding member, reported that in the UK each year 400 600 people drown in the sea or inland waterways and approximately 7000 more get into serious difficulty. There is clearly a pressing need to educate people in beach and open water safety if more lives are to be saved and incidents reduced. Surf Life Saving GB takes an active role nationally and in 70 clubs around Great Britain training people to become the volunteer
lifesavers of the future. We know that by giving people the skills to be competent in open water, not only are they then able to keep themselves safe but can potentially save the life of another. Don’t miss the Ocean Ski racing (the long thin “dart like” kayaks) or the rescues board races. The beach flags competition or swim races. The heats will all take place on Saturday with the finals on the Sunday morning. For the 2 stroke petrol heads among you the Inshore Rescue Boats (IRB’s) will be sure to thrill in their race demonstration on the Sunday morning.

Paddle Round The Pier
There's something for everyone The Access Beach Aiming to be fully inclusive One aspect of Paddle which few people seem to know about is the Access beach. Back in 2010 Paddle Round The Pier introduced this with the hope to be as inclusive as possible. The Paddle Crew all thought that it wasn’t satisfying enough to just give a charity a cheque at the end of the event. We understand more than most the enchanting effect of simply playing in the water and how it can enrich a life. This passion for the sea and the simple reward it offers is something we wanted to share with the kids, their families and carers. We’re a bunch of old sea hippy’s at heart! Working in conjunction with Surf Life Saving GB; the event continues to facilitate disability individuals and groups as diverse as Cerebral Palsy sufferers, Downs Syndrome, Partially Sighted/blind and kids afflicted with Chromosome Deficiency allowing young people and children who often have not even been on a beach before access to the sea. Can we help someone you know? The “Paddle” crew work to a ratio of 3 1 to enable each child the support they needed. We supply new wetsuits/lifejackets for all
Access Beach @ Paddle. The bus company are keen to build on their working relationship with their customers some whom may have a disability. There will be a Brighton & Hove bus parked up alongside the Access Beach (off Hove Lawns) for the whole Paddle festival weekend. It is hoped that many parents/ carers will take this opportunity to consult with the company on how they can continue improve and develop their services If you want to see a true to aid access for all. Managing Director smile – take a look at Martin Harris said: the kids on Access Beach" “We are delighted to be supporting such a worthwhile cause in Paddle Round The Pier. are content to simply experience the power We are particularly excited to be sponsoring of the waves.
