Universities plan education for all Richard Morris @BrightonIndy The two universities in Brighton and Hove will earmark millions of pounds to help students from under-privileged backgrounds to access higher education. Figures released by the Office for Fair Access (OFFA) show both the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex are ring-fencing substantial funds to encourage the less-well-off to continue their studies. Both institutions already offer grants and other forms of financial support to students from groups traditionally under-represented in further and higher education. The University of Brighton has announced it will set aside £8.5 million in 2015-16 to encourage students to apply to university.
The new package includes £3.6 million for bursaries to support students from financiallydisadvantaged backgrounds, with an estimated 2,000 new students likely to receive at least £1,000, and others - those with the lowest family income - eligible for more. Since 2011, the university has been developing projects aimed at widening participation in higher education, including linking up with 50 schools and colleges to encourage the transition from school to higher education. That project will receive £1.4 million under the plans. Currently, there are 1,500 participants, but this should expand to 2,800 by 2015-16. The University of Sussex also already offers financial support for students through its awardwinning First-Generation Scholars Scheme (FGSS). Another £4.1 million
will go to students in 2015-16 along with £1.4 million for outreach programmes. An estimated £2.5 million of direct funding will be paid to students in their first year of study through the FGSS and a further £1.6 million to students in their second and third years, as part of a drive to make sure students who are struggling financially complete their studies. The FGSS is aimed at students from households with a total income of less than £42,600 a year and those from communities who do not traditionally generate university candidates. Those who qualify benefit from a £2,000 rent reduction in the first year and £1,000 grant for each year they study. For more information, visit: www.offa.org.uk

I have only ever wanted to Labour's 'witch-hunt' against party veteran serve my local community
Graham Cox @CoxGraham I was immensely proud to be selected by local Conservatives to be their candidate for the Hove seat at the general election. This was not an easy decision for members as they had three other excellent candidates to choose from. In particular, my colleague Kristy Adams presented a very impressive case. I hope we will see much more of Kristy in the near future. Some readers of Brighton & Hove Independent may recall
my time as the superintendent in charge of Hove, when we pioneered a more visible form of street policing in which patrolling officers dealt with matters that were previously written off as just minor misdemeanours - such as littering, street-drinking, cycling on the pavement, disorderly behaviour. Often, the intervention would simply be an officer having a word with the transgressor and asking them to stop. This sent out the message that the Police cared. I have only ever wanted to serve my local community. It was only my friend Mike Weatherley’s decision to stand down that unexpectedly gave me the opportunity to put myself forward to represent my home town. There are many reasons to be optimistic. The economy is recovering from the mess Labour left us with. Unemployment is down 37% since the last election in Hove and Portslade. The Conservative message of aspiration, a first step on the
ladder, is helping people out of the poverty that a lifetime on benefits brings. I will drive forward Mike Weatherley’s vision for worldclass swimming and sports facilities at the King Alfred. We must find a permanent home in Hove for the King’s Free School. All Hove parks should be beautiful again. I will campaign for the moving of NHS services to Hove. We should have a 24/7 drop-in GP service at our Hove Polyclinic. Hove and Portslade are not just suburbs of Brighton. They are thriving seaside towns with a rich heritage and exciting future. Floreat Hova: May Hove and Portslade flourish! Graham Cox, a Conservative city councillor representing Westbourne ward, was selected on Wednesday as the party’s parliamentary candidate for Hove, following the decision by Mike Weatherley, the sitting MP, to stand down at next year’s general election
Following Councillor Cox's selection, Peter Kyle, the Labour Party's candidate for Hove, said: “Well done to Graham Cox on his selection. As the longest-serving parliamentary candidate from a mainstream party in Hove and Portslade, I know what a privilege it is. "I fear this selection is a problem for David Cameron, however. It’s almost ironic that during Pride Week, when our city showcases its diversity to the world, the Tories present three straight, white men in their 50s as the face of their parliamentary campaigns across our city.” Christopher Hawtree, the Green Party councillor for Central Hove, who is standing as his party's parliamentary candidate for Hove, said: "Graham Cox has said several times recently that I shall be the next MP. I do not know if he has now changed his mind about that. But he is affable. The next nine months are set to be an interesting, energetic and enjoyable time."
Latest TV announces August 28 launch Brighton and Hove will soon have its own television channel. Latest TV is launching on Freeview Channel 8 and Virgin Media 159 on August 28 and plans to cover local news, views, sport, music, entertainment and property. In fact, it already has a mouthwatering line-up of shows confirmed, including Mister Crime, which will feature best-
selling Brighton-based author Peter James, the man behind the critically acclaimed Roy Grace series of novels. Brighton and Hove Independent contributor Frank le Duc will front The Vote, a political programme covering local and national politics and next year’s elections, while an array of local talent will spearhead the channel’s comedy output,
including Lynn Ruth Miller from the ever-popular Treason Show. The channel will also be available on demand online. See www.thelatest.co.uk for more details.

Residents and businesses in Hove are being asked to share their thoughts on what kind of parking scheme they would like to see introduced. The city council is making changes in the Wish Park area and is consulting on two options - a new full parking scheme or an extension to the existing light touch scheme. Consultation runs until August 29 and there is an exhibition at the Wish Park Pavilion on August 6 between 3.30pm and 8.15pm.
Organisers of the Tour of Britain cycle race have revealed what time the peloton is due in Brighton. The city hosts the penultimate leg on Saturday September 13, with thousands of people expected to line the route. Riders are expected at Bear Road at around 3.15pm and will snake their way through the city before reaching Madeira Drive ten minutes or so later. To download a route map, visit: www.tourofbritain.co.uk.
The fire which ripped through parts of Eastbourne Pier was stopped from causing the sort of irreparable damage suffered by Brighton’s West Pier by emergency services. Two thirds of the much-loved Sussex seaside attraction was saved by a major firefighting effort involved East Sussex Fire and Rescue and the local RNLI. The fire is believed to have been triggered by an electrical fault but an investigation into the exact cause is ongoing.

Brighton’s Biggest Breakfast fundraiser, organised by local radio station Juice 107.2FM, raised £1,598.66. More than 20 cafés, coffee shops and restaurants across Brighton and Hove took part in the event, donating a proportion of their daily profits to the appeal. The money will be split between Fun In Action for Children and Brighton Unemployment Centre Families Project (BUCFP). Pippa Atkinson, Juice Appeal founder, said: “It’s our first year and has been a huge success.”
Some of the city’s best street artists have been commissioned to decorate the hoardings surrounding the i360 site. Developers plan to recruit a mix of artists to cover the boards and will submit plans to the city council. A spokesman said: “Brighton is well known for its exceptional standard of street art. “If the application is approved, Brighton’s local talent will collaborate with a range of European artists to turn one side of our hoardings into a 90m-long piece of art.”

People across Brighton and Hove are being encouraged to attend a string of open air ceremonies commemorating the start of the First World War. A number of events have been organised for Sunday and Monday - with the main event scheduled for Sunday afternoon. A memorial service will start at 2.45pm on the East Lawns of the Royal Pavilion, with residents, visitors and community groups invited to come together to remember how the First World War touched the lives of people in Brighton and Hove. The drumhead and interfaith service is being co-ordinated by Brighton and Hove City Council together with the Royal British Legion and will be led by the Right Reverend Dr Martin Warner, the Bishop of Chichester. Councillor Brian Fitch, Brighton and Hove’s Mayor, and Peter Field, Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, will also attend along with religious leaders, cadets, and veterans. Cadets will build an altar from drums and local children will scatter poppy leaves. Monday (August 4) marks the date 100 years ago when Britain entered the conflict. A wreath laying service will take place at the Royal Sussex Regiment War Memorial in Regency Square at 10.45am. The mayor will again be present. Space is limited at the site, so anyone wishing to attend this act of remembrance should contact the council on 01273 295514. On Monday evening a commemorative service of Tisha be Av is taking place at Brighton and Hove Reform Synagogue, Palmeira Avenue, at 6.30pm. Sons, daughters, and grandchildren of Jewish soldiers who fought in World War One are now members of Brighton and Hove Reform Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Sussex. This service is part of the civic calendar of commemorative events and is open to all. In a joint venture with the council, Brighton and Hove Bus Company is providing a WW1 Heritage Bus decorated with images of Brighton,
Hove and Portslade as they were during the war. It will be unveiled on Monday and run on normal bus routes around the city for the next four years. Images include a photograph of a wedding between a nurse and an officer who was awarded the Victoria Cross, Portslade camp and Robert Whiting, a former Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper, who fought in the war. Information panels inside the bus provide further illustrations of life in the city during that time and more information can be found at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/WW1. The images used were sourced from East Sussex Records Office at The Keep, the Royal Pavilion, museums, libraries and private collectors. Martin Harris, managing director of Brighton and Hove Buses, said: "I am delighted that we could work with the council in paying tribute to all those wonderful people of the city who played their part in so many different ways in WW1." Elsewhere, a major exhibition, War Stories: Voices from the First World War, is at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery until March next year. The exhibition brings to life the wartime experiences of 13 individuals whose intensely personal memories and extraordinary stories reveal the
impact of war. Throughout the summer there is an exhibition on the seafront of posters and photographs telling the story of how Brighton and Hove were transformed by the presence of the many military hospitals required to treat the increasing number of casualties returning from the Front. Dr Brighton’s War: Hospitals and Healing in Brighton can be seen until August 31. Councillor Jason Kitcat, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “We will be remembering this historic anniversary in the city together with communities around the world. "The war affected so many lives in so many different ways, and the council is supporting organisations with events and activities that reflect the courage, sacrifice and experiences of local people." A round up of these and other events is available on the council's website at www.brighton-hove.gov. uk/WW1 and at VisitBrighton’s site: www.visitbrighton.com/first-worldwar. Commemorative events this summer are the start of a four year programme of events which will culminate in the anniversary of Armistice Day in 2018.

A Hove hedgehog who starred on a BBC programme has suffered a nasty encounter with a lawnmower. The animal, called Hazel, lives on the Knoll Estate and melted hearts with his stint on BBC’s Winterwatch, which followed the tagged hedgehog. Hazel is cared for by the Hedgehog Street Project in Hove but suffered two infected cuts, probably inflicted by a strimmer or lawnmower. He is being treated by New Priory Vets and is doing well.
An array of decorative cast iron pieces, columns, lamps and railings from the West Pier will be put up for sale. The items were sold to Dorton Reclaim by the West Pier Trust, which has earmarked the proceeds for funding heritage and education project, likely to include the transformation of an old kiosk into a heritage centre. Anyone interested in snapping up a piece of history should visit: www.dortonreclaim. com and sign up for alerts when pieces become available.
Campaigners have six months to find enough money to save a popular pub. The Rose Hill Tavern is at the centre of a long-running row between its owners and locals who fear it could be developed into housing. The city council tagged the site an asset of community value and rejected recent pleas from the owners to back-track on that decision. It means the Rose Hill Tavern Action Group has six months to put together a bid to buy the pub.

Refugee Radio Times writer tells how new book saved his life Ivo Kuka
When I booked an appointment to claim asylum in the UK, never did I know that I was to be detained and treated as a criminal. The Home Office told me they were putting my case on fast track. Not knowing what it meant, I said that was OK but then I was taken downstairs, searched and locked in a room with my phone confiscated. That night I was taken in a van to Harmondsworth. When I got up the following morning I could not believe what was going on. I said to myself, “I am in prison”. I was traumatised, depressed and scared, but as a man I put on the helmet of courage and started to do what I saw others do. The other detainees told me you can find yourself detained for years without your case being decided upon. If you complain about the conditions you will be sent to the notorious 'F-wing' as punishment. You are with three people in a room and the toilet is in the same room, openly and just right next to you. Under the fast track rules, I was
given less than 24 hours to obtain evidence from Cameroon and have it verified by an expert. Even when I managed to do this, the decision makers failed to properly evaluate my evidence. I told them I had to leave Cameroon after I was persecuted as an active member of the SCNC party, campaigning for the independence of the English-speaking Southern Cameroonians. SCNC members are continuously persecuted, but if they claim asylum the Home Office does not want to believe their stories. Last month, after the death of our chairman, 300 SCNC members were arrested and detained. His widow was forced to sign a document that no SCNC members were to be allowed to bury her husband. This is how we are treated in our own country by the occupiers. I myself was imprisoned and tortured and forced to flee to save my life. On my arrival at the removal centre I was supposed to receive the necessary medical and psychological treatment as a victim of torture but instead I was tortured psychologically in detention. There is no health care in detention and the only medical treatment you can receive is Paracetamol, even if you have a broken leg like one man I met.

Indiscretion by Charles Dubow You’re going to thank me. If you haven’t bought your holiday reading yet, look no further, because I’ve found it for you. This is the closest you’ll get to The Great Gatsby crossed with Secret History: a tale of deception and love set in the starriest of settings. And it doesn’t get much starrier than a rich man’s mansion in The Hamptons. Harry and Madeleine Winslow are blessed with talent, money, and charm. Harry is an award–winning author on the cusp of greatness; Madeleine is a woman of sublime beauty and grace whose elemental goodness belies a privileged upbringing. Bonded by deep devotion, their marriage is both envied and admired by friends
who spend summers at their East Hampton idyll. Then (wouldn’t you know it?) along comes Claire. She’s young, intelligent, and loves being in the company of such worldly and literate people. They, in turn, are enchanted by her youth and her charm. Not to mention feeling secure in their love for one another. What could possibly go wrong? But it’s the telling of the ageold tale that makes this book so perfect. Dripping with wit and wisdom, this is a page-turning wonder of a book that had me hooked from the first page. Clever enough to keep you guessing, starry enough to make you swoon, and worldly enough to make you feel oh-sosophisticated for reading it in the first place. What? Oh, it’s my pleasure. No, really, it is. Enjoy.
Asylum seeking has been turned into a serious crime in the UK. I served a long-term prison sentence in Cameroon for belonging to the SCNC and in the UK I served another undetermined prison term for seeking asylum. I believe the fast track process should not exist. It has been declared unlawful by the High Court and I think it should be abolished. I contacted Refugee Radio and they encouraged me to speak on the radio. I said I wanted to let people know about my experiences so they
asked me to write my story down, and this became a chapter in their new book, the Refugee Radio Times. I did not know it at the time, but this was going to help me in the future. On my third appearance in court, and after four months in detention, I had a new judge. He said he had read my story. He recognised that I was genuinely active and outspoken and could never be safe in my country. Now I am studying health and social-care management and doing voluntary work. I have not
stopped campaigning for Southern Cameroon. The struggle we will not let go. We're still fighting for independence. We won't let that go so easily.
Ivo Kuka is one of a number of refugees who have written for the Refugee Radio Times book. The book, priced £5, is available from City Books in Hove, online via Amazon or directly from the Refugee Radio charity at www.refugeeradio.org.uk.

Fighting for fire service A campaign to save the local fire service from frontline cuts has been taken to Westminster by Labour Party hopefuls. Nancy Platts, who is standing for election in Kemptown and Peacehaven, led the delegation, which included Sarah Owen, who is standing for election along the Sussex coast in Hastings. As part of controversial cuts either Hove or Preston Circus fire stations will lose a fire engine and firefighters will see their shift pattern changed.

Precious watch stolen
The MP for Brighton Kemptown has written to Michael Fallon, the defence secretary, to ask for the government to fund a statue of Henry Allingham, the late First World War veteran. Simon Kirby believes Mr Allingham, who lived in Ovingdean, deserves a permanent memorial and has asked the government to consider one. He said: “Henry Allingham represents so much that is good about Britain, he was a Brighton resident and his life deserves to be marked in this way.”
More than 4,000 university students celebrated their graduation this week. Students from the University of Brighton took part in a week of ceremonies at Brighton Dome in front of friends and relatives. Professor Julian Crampton, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, said: “The university is pleased to be able to play its full part in developing the next generation of key professionals this country needs for its future success. “I wish each and every graduate success in their chosen career.”
Robbers stole a watch given to the victim’s father by his grandfather shortly before he was taken to Auschwitz during the war. The tourist was taking a stroll along the seafront on Sunday July 20 between 7am and 8am when he was targeted by three men. Police are keen to track down the watch, a silver Longines, with a clear face, with Roman numerals, dated circa 1912. Staycation So the long school holidays are now upon us. As I walked along the seafront last week the sense of excitement and freedom was palpable. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the sea sparkled. Everywhere I looked in Brighton people of all ages seemed to be finding different ways to soak up both the rays and the atmosphere. From makeshift tents and impromptu barbeques on the beach to water fights and picnics in the parks and green spaces. It got me thinking how lucky we locals are – we don’t need to go abroad to enjoy the summer...it’s all here. Brighton I thought to myself could well have invented the term ‘staycation’. A staycation was a term that started being used in the financial crisis of 2007 – 2010. It means to stay at home but treat your hometown and surrounding area as you would a holiday destination. It gained further popularity as a solution in 2009 when the weak pound made foreign holidays much less affordable. Your typical staycation might include buying a paddling pool for the garden (even if you don’t have children!!) visits to local parks, museums and galleries. Going to local village fairs or nearby music festivals. I have even heard that the regular staycationers often devise rules, such as setting a
beginning and end date, having a planned activity schedule. Thus making a concerted effort to avoid anything that might seem like the usual routine.Their goal being to create the same feeling one gets from a traditional holiday away. As a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator I work long hours. I love my work and the difference I can make in helping couples navigate the painful transition of ending their relationship. However I also love and need my summer holiday. I really like the concept of the staycation because it comes from adopting a positive attitude. A belief that in difficult times one can find a way of doing things differently. In this way it resembles the way I try and help my clients especially those with children to think. Couples I work with often chose the collaborative process because they want to manage their separation in a more thoughtful and positive way. They recognise things are tough but with my help they can get through it. Many emerge more positive and resourceful than they have been for a long time. Like the staycation it is largely about looking at what is available to you and adopting and pragmatic attitude. And that like the summer sun is a really good feeling.

Whichever way you look, our view will be blighted Graham Chainey
In just a few years, as you stand on Brighton Pier and survey the glorious panorama of Regency terraces and sparkling sea, you will see also three gigantic new blots on that view. If you look towards the east, you will see huge new tower blocks looming over the m arina, compromising views of the white cliffs beyond. Giant cranes are currently in place, as work begins on Brunswick’s £250 million development, after seven years of delay. Is this still a marina, you may ask, or some kind of amphibious new town? Why do these blocks of luxury flats have to be quite so tall (at 40 storeys, one will be the tallest in Sussex)? Why, in an age of rising sea levels and worsening winters, build in the sea? Where is the infrastructure - access roads, sewerage - for all their putative inhabitants? In the second place, if you look
towards the west, there will be the i360, on which work has also now begun, having been finally approved and funded after eight years of delay. This £38 million structure will soon rise at the root end of the ruined West Pier, to soar 500 feet above Regency Square. We have yet to see whether the claims of its developers, Marks Barfield, as to number of visitors (800,000 a year) and benefit to the local economy (154 full-time jobs) will prove accurate or hyperbolic, but most residents remain sceptical and resistant to this new attraction’s attractions. Of course, every trendy city these days has to have a viewing structure as a kind of status symbol. Portsmouth, with strong nautical connections, built one in the shape of a gigantic sail; it seems as if Brighton and Hove, having one of the highest drug addiction rates in the country, decided its appropriate image would be a gigantic needle. You have the Spinnaker; we have the Sharp. As we watch the glass observation pod climbing or descending, we will be able to
imagine another welcome shot of economic value being syringed into (or possibly out of) our city. And thirdly, as you turn your gaze seawards, there will be the Rampion wind farm, which has just received government consent. German energy company E.ON is to build 175 wind turbines (reduced from a proposed 195) off the coast. These massive structures, 689 feet tall, will be just nine miles away and will compromise views from Brighton, Worthing and the Downs. This £2 billion project is scheduled to be up and running by 2018. There are arguments for and against this wind farm. We are told it will provide power for 450,000 homes - two-thirds of homes in Sussex - though we are not told whether it will do this when the wind is not blowing. We are told we desperately need to invest in renewal energies, and Friends of the Earth, among others, have welcomed the scheme. The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change felt the “compelling case” for the turbines outweighed “potential
A councillor criticised plans for “hulking great monoliths on the horizon" adverse local impacts”. Such impacts include the need to lay 17 miles of onshore power cables through the Downs, disrupting a chalk grassland claimed to be “a rarer habitat than the Amazon rainforest”, and possible damage to kittiwake breeding. Well, whether you applaud or deplore this project, it will certainly be yet another huge item that will permanently change our visual environment.
One Worthing councillor thought views from Worthing would be ruined by “these hulking great monoliths on the horizon”, and the same will certainly apply to views from Brighton and Hove, with the additional fact that here it will be only one of three such intrusive new sights.

Exclusive: Brighton Digital Festival announces programme of digital culture events for 2014
Brighton Digital Festival 2014 September 1-28 brightondigitalfestival.co.uk @DigitalBrighton
Brighton Digital Festival, the country's biggest celebration of digital culture, will return this year - with more than 100 events already confirmed and many more in development. The festival runs from September 1 to 28, bringing together the city’s arts and digital communities through a range of exhibitions, performances, conferences, meet-ups, workshops, and outdoor events, all taking place across Brighton and Hove. The first series of events is announced today in Brighton & Hove Independent - which is proud to be the festival's media partner - before the launch of the full programme on the Brighton Digital Festival website. For more information, visit: www. brightondigitalfestival.co.uk. Confirmed events include the
popular and well-established conferences including dConstruct, Reasons to be Creative, Improving Reality, and Brighton SEO - along with a range of new arts, entertainment and family friendly events. dConstruct, is a one-day conference on September 5, this year focused on "living with the network". One of the most-highlyanticipated speakers is Cory Doctorow, science fiction author, activist, journalist, blogger and co-editor of Boing Boing. Dots is a new conference celebrating the innovations that emerge when existing ideas are connected in new ways. It takes place on September 3 and is organsied by Brilliant Noise, the Brighton digital strategy and innovation agency. A free outdoor interactive music and laser event called
Laser Light Synths concludes the festival’s first week, taking place in New Road on Saturday, September 6 from 8pm. Created by Seb Lee-Delisle, the free installation enables members of the public to become musicians, using bespoke touch-activated musical instruments filled with hundreds of high-power LED lights. As you play, the sounds will trigger a laser light spectacle, running up the columns of the Unitarian Church. People can visit the free Laser Light Synths immediately after attending the Brighton Mini Maker Faire, which returns to Brighton for its fourth year at the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange. This creative and inventive faire celebrates the Maker movement and takes place all day on September 6. Lighthouse will bring Julian Oliver and Danja Vasiliev to Brighton Digital Festival 2014 to exhibit Critical Engineering from September 2. The free exhibition shows a collection of sculptures and installations exploring the problems created by our increasingly-technologised environment. Furthermore, following its premiere at the Royal Opera House in May, The Measures Taken will be coming to The Old Market on September 26. Alexander Whitley
Dance Company has teamed up with Marshmallow Laser Feast to explore our inter-dependent relationship with technology. Also at The Old Market are CIRCA69 and Simon Wilkinson, who will be re-telling the most mysterious disappearance story in Beyond the Bright Black Edge of Nowhere on September 4. Among the fa m i ly - f r i e n d ly and educational events at the festival, young gamers, aspiring architects, and town planners will want to attend BlockBuilders. It helps under16s build their own vision of the London Road redevelopment using Minecraft, a popular creative gaming platform. Those who want to get to know their existing town better can also explore the streets for Little Bo Beep, a QR-code-enabled treasure hunt from the Brighton A n i m a t o r s Network Group (Bang!) in collaboration with RamJam. This year, the festival expands its digital education programme, which aims to get a diverse range of younger learners switched on to digital education themes that complement the new GCSE modules for ICT and Computer Sciences. The festival has also selected six arts and technology
commissions, ambitious artworks that embody the multifaceted nature of Brighton Digital Festival, and explore a fusion between arts and technology. News about these commissions and the education programme will be announced soon. Jesse Black Mooney, the Brighton Digital Festival manager, said: "We are thrilled that so many creative and inspiring events have been submitted to this year's festival programme, with more coming in every day. Being able to offer awards through our various commissions this year has allowed us to expand our programme, but it is the local community's enthusiasm and involvement in shaping the festival that makes Brighton Digital Festival so fantastic. This is a celebration of Brighton and Hove as well as a celebration of digital culture." Arts Council England, Brighton and Hove City Council, American Express, Pure360 and Brighton and Hove Independent are all supporters of Brighton Digital Festival 2014. The festival is guided and supported by a consortium group including Clearleft, Brandwatch, Wired Sussex, Lighthouse, Fabrica, South East Dance, Fugu PR, Phoenix Brighton, Brilliant Noise, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery and Brighton Dome. Events are still being added to the festival listings until September. So visit the website for the latest information and details on how to submit an event of your own. A printed programme will be distributed from late August and the full listings - including venues, timings and prices are available online at: www. brightondigitalfestival.co.uk/ events/.

A story told through cut-ups of 1950s B-movies, promotional films, and commercials - with a live electronic score, live classical instruments and eight monologues.

Pride 2014: The global challenge In May, the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA - www.ilga.org) published its latest annual report entitled State-sponsored Homophobia. The map and the information on these pages is derived from the 95-page report. The report noted: There are 113 countries (members of the United Nations) where homosexual acts between adults in private are legal. In addition, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus decriminalised homosexuality this year; São Tome & Principe, in 2012. There are 78 countries where homosexual acts are illegal. The legal situation in India has been changed from “unclear” to “illegal”, because of the ruling of the Supreme Court last year. In Uganda and Nigeria, the situation got worse with the passing of new anti-gay laws. There are five countries - Iran, Mauritania, Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen - and some parts of Nigeria and Somalia, that punish homosexual acts with the death penalty. There are a further four countries where it is not entirely clear if the Sharia code stipulating the death penalty is being implemented: Brunei Darussalam, Iraq, Pakistan, and Qatar. In 2013 and early 2014, nine countries - including Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Tanzania - have either passed laws, or parliaments are considering bills, regarding so-called “homossexual propaganda” laws. It is notable, however, that parliaments in Moldova, Hungary and Armenia variously rejected such bills last year. Discrimination in employment based on sexual orientation is now prohibited in 61 countries, among which Cuba and Puerto Rico (an incorporated territory of the United States) passed laws in that respect last year; El Salvador passed a law in 2010. Hate crimes based on sexual orientation are considered an aggravating circumstance
in 27 countries. East Timor has amended its penal code in this regard in 2009; the Regional Court of Appeal of Debrecen in Hungary found homophobic murder an aggravating circumstance earlier this year. Incitement of hatred based on sexual orientation is prohibited in 28 countries. Finland introduced such a law in 2011; Slovenia did likewise in 2008. Marriage is open for same-sex couples in 14 countries, including some parts of United Kingdom (2013-14), and in Martinique and Guadaloupe (both this year), both overseas departments of France in the Caribbean. Malta has introduced a same-sex union law this year. There are now 11 countries where same-sex couples are offered most or all rights of marriage. Same-sex couples are offered some rights of marriage in eight countries, including the Czech Republic (2006) and Costa Rica (2013). Joint adoption by same-sex couples is legal in 15 countries. It was legalised in France last year, and in Uruguay in 2009. Second-parent adoption, but not full adoption, by same-sex couples is also legal in five countries, most recently Austria last year.

Business Bite-sized Chunks – Brighton & Hove Chamber members share nuggets of wisdom
TEDxBrighton 2014: Connectivity, convergence and community This year’s TEDxBrighton event has been given the title Many Hands and will explore ideas around the three Cs: connectivity, convergence and community. TED is a nonprofit organization which started as a four-day event in California almost 30 years ago devoted to spreading ideas. Since then a number of locally-organised independent TEDx (x signifying independent) events have sprung up, including the popular one here in Brighton, which this year takes place on Friday October 31 at Brighton Dome. This year’s talks, which will include one from Brighton author Peter James, will look at the prevalence of technology in the networked age, how social networks can leave us feeling more isolated than ever. They will also explore how intimacy looks in the modern age along with ideas of connectivity across distance, flash mobs, subcultures, the maker movement and how skills once commonplace within our locale, have become rarities akin to art.
Much will focus on those innovative individuals whose work engages with that sweet spot between audience and performer, those who’ve brought ideas, theories and people together in unexpected places. An ideas lab will run in the foyer at Brighton Dome throughout the day and aims to be a soap box for the very best ground breaking inventions, designs and new technologies from the South East and beyond. Sam Orams, TEDxBrighton producer, said: “We’re incredibly excited about this year’s event. With our move to a bigger space, 2014 is the year that TEDxBrighton comes of age. “Brighton and Hove has a fascinating and complex network of communities, be they creative, academic, geographic or culture driven so we’re thrilled to be celebrating the people that make our city so vibrant.” More information is available online at: www.tedxbrighton.com.

This week James Dempster, managing director of Cobb Digital, who led a Facebook marketing for business bite-sized learning session at the most recent meeting, shares his top tips: I find online marketing (and in particular Facebook marketing) an incredibly interesting and efficient way of getting clients’ messages into the public domain. There is still a perception that Facebook is not as effective a platform as Twitter for marketing (especially for B2B), but I disagree. The main thing that brands need to remember is to promote conversations, not a one way broadcast. Get this right and your social Klout will soar! acts of brutality in a vicious conflict that tore Spain asunder. As one of the most-talented poets of the 20th century, Lorca distilled into his works the very essence of Spain and his native Andalucia, the searing heat and riotous colours, the joys and passions, the comedies and tragedies. His life, poetry, friendships with artists Bunuel, Dali and Picasso, fascination with Gypsy
culture and his interest in Flamenco dance and song are all explored in Lament for Lorca – a 125-minute spectacular with recorded narrations, dramatised poetry, film and slide projections. It is a passionate and dramatic re-telling of the life and death of an artist destroyed by savage forces as the country he loved was torn apart.

The Summer market It’s an annual event that come mid – July the property market settles a little. Some sellers go on holiday, buyers the same and we have a few weeks of hit and miss activity. A couple of things can help you sell whilst you are away. Leave a key and contact details with your agent so they can feed back on viewings and any offers. Failing that, leaving a family member, friend or neighbour with a key to gain access can help you not miss that buyer who is in Brighton in August when you are not. Some people are anxious about the agent holding a key but if you have established trust, it should not present a problem. This is also the time of year when you may want to reevaluate your marketing. From September to Christmas is almost 14 weeks. Given that a sale can take at least 12 weeks from finding a buyer to handing
over the keys, what is your timescale? Do you want to get moved before Christmas or are you not bothered? Price is the key determinant in selling anything: car, painting, house, whatever. If you are selling for say £375,000, look at a list of property in your general postcode area between £300-450,000. When you look on one of the property portals (currently the main ones are Rightmove and Zoopla), is yours the most expensive property of its type and in its location? Perhaps the price reflected the market when you started but didn’t quite hit the mark of you getting an acceptable offer. Have a serious talk with your agent about the price if you honestly feel it is not quite right. Also, listen to your agent. Perhaps it has been advertised in a price band, e.g. £450-500,000. Offers have been at around £450,000. Maybe that should have been
the asking price all along. More and more sellers and of course buyers, want transparency in transactions. Price bands and ‘Offers over’ don’t help in guiding people where to pitch an offer. You want to encourage not discourage buyers to make offers. Does the property heading read well on the portal? First impressions are so critical. Imagine a buyer scrolling down a page of quite similar properties. What will get them to click through to yours? Has the agent missed a really key feature in the heading? Is the photograph the best one? Have a full and frank discussion with your agent. Make sure you are singing from the same hymn sheet and they are selling the property making the most of every viewing. Some agents are targeted on the number of viewings they achieve on a property,
not the quality. Agents should be quizzing potential viewers sufficiently to have at least a 50% chance of selling the property. Nothing worse that the buyer turning up with a walking stick to a 4th floor flat without a lift! Ask your agent how they qualify viewers; not just by price… The other bête noir is negotiators only having ‘their buyers’,being on individual
commission so they do not share information freely as it could help a ‘colleague’ sell the property…never mind the client’s needs! So, get everything in order, including the sales negotiators working together and, go enjoy the beach! Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A.

The places I eat
It’s summertime and the eating is easy Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn
Spending a month away made me realise how spoiled we are in this city, especially with regards to food. From themed pop-ups in community spaces to high-end, formal dining, Brighton and Hove is one of the most promising food destinations in the United Kingdom. And now that summer has started, there is even more time to explore our ever-expanding food scene. I have compiled some foodie highlights for you to try over the coming weeks, ensuring a continued focus on the independent, creative, and downright interesting aspects of the best places in town. The New Club 133-144 King’s Road, Brighton, BN1 2HH A firm favourite among the Places I Eat Brighton team, it’s been thrilling to watch this New-Yorkinfluenced bar/restaurant go from strength to strength. The introduction of weekday menu specials, including a superb Southern fried chicken evening every Wednesday, has made The New Club one of the hippest places to dine in this summer.
Coffee Chronicles What’s a Shakeroono? According to our menu, it’s our version of a milkshake. According to our patrons, that’s not descriptive enough. We’ll let you in on a little secret... we coffee shop people all use the
Street Diner Wednesday at Hove Town Hall; Friday and Saturday at Brighthelm Gardens, Brighton, BN3 4AH Launching a little more than a year ago, Street Diner has seen unparalleled success with their platform for local traders to showcase an array of worldwide street foods. Feast in the sunshine on Venezuelan arepas, Caribbean jerk chicken, vegan kebabs, Indian vegetarian nibbles, and Middle Eastern meze - to name but a few of the weekly delights on offer. Pop-ups Across the city The concept of a pop-up has grown to incorporate not only events in people’s houses, but also those in pubs, cafés and bars. Currently on offer this summer are Asian grazing evenings by Ed Heller (The Brunswick), fine dining by The Set (Dan Kenny and Semone Bonner, from the Gingerman Group) and seasonal feasts from Tina CanTina, Brighton’s supper-club queen. Visit www.tabl.com to find out more. Brighton Open Market London Road, Brighton, BN1 4JU Having opened a fortnight ago, the revamped Brighton Open Market is yet another fantastic addition to London Road’s food scene.
by @LittleCoffeeCo same core products, invent names plucked from obscurity that sound exotic but are utterly meaningless, charge you varying amounts for the same item, and then mock you when you can’t pronounce our made up word. Frappuccino, anyone?
Traders include The Flying Saucer, specialising in artisan teas and coffee; Foodshed, providing locally-grown produce; Mari’s deli, serving hand-carved Iberian ham and Spanish cheese, alongside Smorl’s Humous, Falafel and Salad Bar. A must for every ethicallyconscious shopper and foodie this summer.
Join the queue at Boho Gelato Boho Gelato 6 Pool Valley, Brighton, BN1 1NJ As featured in our ice cream special, Boho Gelato is the place to get your artisan Italian gelato this summer. With an ever-revolving collection of handmade ice creams and sorbets, the focus is on providing enticing flavours that cater for all palates and dietary requirements.
Unsurprisingly, Starbucks trademarked the frappuccino, but they didn’t actually invent it. They bought out the company who coined the name and thus bought the sole rights to use the name - if you can’t beat them, buy them. For as long as we all use equallyridiculous names, the market has been thrown wide open for us all to have a go. The path has been paved for frappés, fraps and, since 2011, The Shakeroono.
Join the queue at Brighton’s premier ice-cream shop. The Creperie 2 Ship Street, Brighton, BN1 1AD A cross between French Riviera and sunny Brighton seaside, The Creperie is impressing with both their crisp, chic decor and, of course, a wide selection of sweet and savoury crepes. Made from French buckwheat flour, the crepe menu includes a divine Sussex Smokie alongside more traditional galettes such as crepe de maison filled with French tartiflette. Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival Across the city Running from September 4 to 14, the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival is the perfect end to a summer of food merriment. Nick Mosley, the festival director, promises an eclectic array of events including Food Lab - which partners top chefs and producers alongside each other to create unique dishes - and a new foraging masterclass, as well as old favourites including Bitter & Twisted beer and cider evening, plus Sussex and the World Food Market. To read more by Claire Beveridge and the Places I Eat Brighton team, visit www.placesieatbrighton.com
Our version of a milkshake is the same as everybody else’s version of a milkshake save two factors. Firstly, we use freshly-brewed coffee from our machine. Secondly, it’s got a brilliant name. The Shakeroono is not trademarked. But, seriously, don’t even think about it.
This juicy dark-skinned variety is most commonly found in the vineyards of California where it is prized as one of the oldest and most established varieties in the country. This grape was originally used only to produce dark and fruity reds; Zinfandel is now, however, far better known as a white wine variety, especially in this country. These are a group of whites with a slightly pink hue due to contact with their heavily-pigmented skins. Often on the sweeter side, the California sun and soil bring out a tropical flavour palate that makes them great as drinking wines. Often found in the cheaper bottles, if you look carefully you can find a variety of more refined and sophisticated specimens. The whites pair very well with heavily-spiced dishes such as those found in Cajun, Indian and oriental cuisines and Mediterranean fish dishes. Their red counterparts are a great accompaniment to meat of all sorts, especially lamb and beef, as they respond well to the slight sweetness. Sam Gardom @SamGardom www.feastblog.co.uk

Krakow – a city we should all visit
Pretty Good Thinking
Sarah Morgan @sarah_morgan
The Bazylika Mariacka dominates the Krakow skyline Richard Morris @BrightonIndy Some holidays you remember for amazing views you have seen; others for fantastic local cuisines you experience for the first time, the people you meet, or sampling different cultures from outside your comfort zone. Then, there are the rare trips that you remember not for what you saw or who you saw it with, but for how you felt. Krakow is certainly one such destination. Krakow is just over 50 kilometres from AuschwitzBirkenau and the Nazi’s most infamous concentration camp still casts a dark shadow over the picturesque and welcoming Polish city. It is almost impossible to visit Krakow and not acknowledge the horrors of the Nazi regime. It permeates much of the city, particularly the Jewish Quarter, and is an inescapable and, at times, blunt message from the past. And so it should be. While Krakow is a wonderful example of Eastern Europe at its best - complete with some eyecatching architecture, unmissable traditional food and, especially
in the summer, a relaxing café culture that demands nothing less than an afternoon’s sunsoaked people watching - it also has a place as a gateway to history. Anyone keen to learn more about the horrors of the Holocaust will almost certainly visit Krakow. And anyone visiting Krakow - for whatever reason - should include a trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau. It is as far from an enjoyable afternoon as any tourist could spend. But a more vital few hours would be near-impossible to find. There is simply no point in attempting to portray the emotions one feels when walking through Auschwitz-Birkenau. It is indescribable. It is something so intensely personal it must be experienced rather than read about. Nothing can prepare you for the cocktail of emotions you will almost certainly feel. But, in a strange way, you will be glad you felt them. For those who don’t feel able to visit the concentration camp, a less emotionally-raw option is Oskar Schindler’s Factory in Krakow. The museum provides an incredibly-detailed insight into the experiences of locals during Nazi occupation, the terrible

treatment of Jewish people, the creation of a ghetto in the city and the prisoners who inspired the Steven Spielberg film Schindler’s List. There is, however, more to Krakow than the Holocaust. Aside from the museums, Krakow boasts a thriving bar and restaurant scene and anyone with an interest in religious architecture will also be well-served by a visit. Situated in the corner of Krakow’s thriving and bustling market square is the Bazylika Mariacka, an elaborate church and home to a magnificent 15th century altar - a giant pair of doors which open to reveal a dramatic depiction of the ascension into Heaven. Even those without religion will be impressed. Krakow is a city that will never escape its past. But it does not feel weighted down by it. It is a beautiful, friendly and inspiring city which survives long after the regime that persecuted many of its residents has been consigned to the history books. A trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau is harrowing. But a trip to Krakow can be uplifting. The former is one of those places people feel they should visit. The latter is one they will want to return to.
As the adage goes, ask me no questions and I’ll tell you no lies. Here are a few things I could have shared, but didn’t. Time takes on a whole new concept when you’re a parent. You feel it slipping through your fingers and you measure it much more than before - whether it’s the minutes your baby has been feeding, the hours they’ve (not) been sleeping, or the months you’ve known them. All time is precious. Unless you have a friend or dog that follows you like a
I’m returning to first principles this week, with a longish reply to the simple enough question: what is organic beauty? Why not start by looking for the Cosmos or Soil Association symbol before you buy a product? Alongside four other European certification bodies, the Soil Association has developed the Cosmetics Organic Standard, or Cosmos, to harmonise organic standards globally. The first products certified to these new standards went on sale in 2011. To get Cosmos organic certification, 95% of a product’s agroingredients and 20% of the entire product must be organic. The remaining ingredients must meet strict criteria to ensure that they are not damaging to our health or the environment. What is more, these products also have to meet environmental standards for packaging and manufacturing, and use approved “green chemistry” processes when modifying any ingredients. The Soil Association will not certify any product with less than 70% organic ingredients. If you think about processing methods and the prevalence of GM, this is vital - particularly if you seek to avoid them. If a product has between 70% and 95% organic agroingredients, they will certify it. But it should not claim to be organic; instead, it can state that it is made with “xx%
shadow, you won’t be used to the constant companionship that parenthood brings. It’s a lovely change, but it’s not without its challenges too - especially if you’re the sort of person who likes to use the loo in peace. Or eat a meal without fearing that you’re going to drop something hot on someone else’s head. Oh, and being a new parent puts you on terra very-unfirma. If you’re used to knowing roughly what you’re doing in life (as my brother is), then this one could really throw you. Time to

peculiar; can you imagine such a thing in a restaurant - for example, no battery hens in our menu? A great number of very ethical smaller brands, however, start out without being fully certified. So don’t dismiss them out of hand and use your judgement. I wandered through London Road Open Market and it has really improved down there. Apart from buying enormous organic tomatoes, I also zeroed in on a PGT newcomer. Shaloah natural skin care have a range of gorgeous handmade moisturisers, serums, and body oils on their little stall. I’ll update more on their story when I have tried some out.
channel that gut instinct. I didn’t share those things with my brother, because part of the fun is finding them out for yourself. Right? And all he really needs to know is that you make whatever changes you have to, willingly, because what better reason could you ever have? Sussex face run of one-day games
Richard Morris @BrightonIndy Sussex’s short-game woes have continued into the county’s Royal London One-Day Cup campaign. The Sharks struggled to assert themselves in this season’s Natwest T20 Blast! competition despite posting a world record run chase in their last group game. Luke Wright led the way with a whopping unbeaten 153 from just 66 balls, including 12 fours and 11 sixes, as the Sharks rounded off their frustrating T20 season with a resounding win. If, however, they had hoped to carry that run-plundering form into the opening matches in the Royal London One-Day Cup, they will have been disappointed. A first match defeat to Nottinghamshire was followed up by a second straight loss to
Warwickshire. The second One Day Cup defeat was particularly poor, with Sussex being bowled out for just 155 with more than ten of their 50 overs remaining. That resulted in a thumping 118 run defeat, with Ed Joyce topscoring with 47 and just two other batsman (Yasir Arafat and Luke Wells) managing more than 20 at the crease. Next up are Durham at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground in Hove on Tuesday, starting at 2pm, followed by a visit to Surrey the following day. If Sussex can bag a pair of wins from those two fixtures it would certainly provide a timely boost to local fans of the short form. Sussex have manage to claw their way to relative safety in the long-form LV County Championship and sit fifth of nine teams despite earlier flirting
with the perilous bottom two positions. They now have five one day games in a row before their next County Championship game, two of which are at Hove. The Royal London One-Day Cup has been introduced by the ECB in a bid to replicate the popular 50 over international games at a county level and encourage more fans to head to watch live cricket. And as an incentive to get young supporters down to Hove, the county is offering free entry to all children under the age of 18 for the Durham game on Tuesday. Entry is also free to Standard members, while Martlet members qualify for discounted entry of £10. Tickets are £15 for adults and are available now online at: www. sussexcricket.co.uk or by calling 0844 264 0201.
Straight from Brighton Racecourse Gary Moore aims to collect a birthday present with a debut success in the historic £20,000 Frosts4cars Brighton Challenge Cup at the three-day Brighton Festival next week (August 6-8). The Frost’s Ladies Day feature at the meeting has seen mares triumph in it for two years in a row through Ethics Girl (2012) and Sussex-trained Beacon Lady (2013). But Moore, 58 next Thursday, is confident his gelding Whinging Willie has a “live chance” in the featured mileand-a-half handicap. His daughter Hayley, an amateur rider, rode the fiveyear-old to victory in the ladies race at the 2013 meeting on the corresponding day. And the track’s leading trainer over the past five years, who has bases in Brighton and Lower Beeding, has nominated stable apprentice Hector Crouch to take the ride. Moore, father to superstar pilot Ryan, told Brighton & Hove Independent: “Whinging Willie handles the track well and goes well on fast ground, which I expect it to be. He has come on since Hayley rode him last year and has a live chance. “Hector won on him at Newbury recently and scored a victory on Elsie Bay at Brighton a couple of weeks ago.” Moore runs Good Luck Charm in the £20,000 John Smith’s Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy, another historic renewal, on Day One. His five-year-old is owned Heart of the South and bred by John and Caroline Penny, who
are part of the Sussex owners group. He said: “Again, I feel he has a live chance too.” Moore is likely to face tough opposition from leading Yorkshire handler Mark Johnston. Johnston has a good record at the Festival, especially in the Brighton Mile. He has won the Mile three times in the past five years with My Gacho (2009), Licence To Till (2010, dead heating with Lastkingofscotland) and Party Royal (2013). Johnston told the Brighton & Hove Independent: “I don’t have Party Royal any more but I’m sure to have runners. There’s good prize money. I’ve got a decent record down there.” Angmering’s William Knight, the leading trainer at the 2013 festival, has gone from hero to zero. Knight was the county handler who saddled Beacon Lady last year, but revealed he has no entries next week. He said: “It’s unfortunate as we won the champion trainer there last year. We’ve hardly had any runners at Brighton this year. I’ve got three-year-olds who should be going there but they want soft ground and there hasn’t been much of that at Brighton.” Ron Harris could be looking for a successive hat-trick in the Betvictor App Brighton Bullet sprint on the third and final day. The Chepstow trainer has won with Prodigality (2012) and Noverre To Go (2013).

Seagulls still searching for left back ‘Appy days for Albion fans Richard Morris @BrightonIndy A new left back is top of Sami Hyypiä’s Seagulls shopping list with fans hoping the Albion can still secure the services of last season’s loan star Stephen Ward. The Ireland international played for his parent club Wolverhampton Wanderers during a friendly earlier this week, although the Wolves lineup was not exclusively first choice players. Ward enjoyed a fruitful spell at the Amex under Oscar Garcia last season and despite the fact the head coach has since been replaced by Hyypiä, the club’s recruitment team, which is headed by David Burke, remains keen on adding him to the Albion roster on a permanent basis. Wolves are looking to sell as they prepare for life in the back in the second tier of English football after a year spent in League One. The Black Country outfit will demand a minimal transfer fee for Ward, likely to be around the £100,000 mark, and Brighton could easily afford the sum, particularly after selling Leo Ulloa for £8 million. The stumbling block so far, however, has been the player’s wages. Brighton contributed £10,000 a week towards Ward’s overall £13,000 wage and the Seagulls, ever mindful of Financial Fair Play restrictions, have so far been unwilling to bend their strict wage budget to accommodate the full figure. With time running out before the start of the season and with little reported interest from elsewhere, supporters will hope a compromise can be reached. In the meantime the Seagulls will be busy identifying alternatives. At present Hyypiä has limited options at left back, with Adam Chicksen the likely first choice if no new signings can be secured. The club has been linked with a move for Paul Konchesky. The Mirror newspaper reported Albion’s alleged interest in
Adam Chicksen is Albion’s only specialist left back. (Photograph: Paul Hazlewood) the 33-year-old Leicester City left back, who has a wealth of Premier League experience and been capped twice by England. It could be, however, that the apparent interest in toughtackling Konchesky is little more than an effort to force Ward’s hand and speed up a deal for the Albion’s first choice target. The Seagulls met Southampton last night in the last of the club’s pre-season friendlies, with recently-recruited goalkeeper David Stockdale expected to make his first start. Stockdale, who joined for a reported £1 million from Fulham, has already impressed supporters by taking time to talk to Albion fans on Twitter. The ‘keeper, who will wear the
number 13 shirt, said he was won over by the club’s Premier League ambitions. He said: “Brighton and Hove Albion have got a lot of history, and they’ve come such a long way in the last five years, and after speaking to everyone at the club, I was delighted to come. “Everyone spoke about where the club’s heading, and the manager said we’re a club with Premier League facilities and we’re now striving to get there as a team.” Brighton now have just over a week to strengthen further before the visit of Sheffield Wednesday in the season opener, with Sam Baldock and Adam Clayton both continuing to be linked to the Seagulls.
Brighton and Hove Albion’s ground-breaking app is being made available to more supporters ready for the start of the new season. The official app is now available from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, meaning more fans can access it from their mobile phones. It will provide instant team news, live scores, travel information, updates from the club and much more direct to a smartphone at the Amex on matchdays. The app uses innovative software to sidestep the problem of potentially 30,000 fans accessing the internet at once by establishing a network directly between the phones and sharing updates to the app. Away from the Amex the app relies on mobile signal or wifi to keep fans in touch with all the news from the club seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The software which helps the app work within the confines of the Amex has been tested and validated over the past 12 months by the TribeHive team at Sussex University and hundreds of Albion fans, as part of the Digital Stadium Project. It has now also been snapped up by the Football League’s digital team and the new technology will be used by fans at QPR, Watford, Birmingham, Bolton and Middlesbrough from
the start of the season. Paul Camillin, the Seagulls’ head of media, said: “It is a revolutionary piece of work by Ian Wakeman and his team from the University of Sussex. “Here at the Amex, we are also in the process of installing wifi, and the app’s peer-to-peer technology will compliment the free wifi service which will soon be available to all fans inside the stadium. “The software which has been developed solves the issue of lack of connectivity in any large crowd environment, football matches, stadiums, music gigs, festivals but it also has potential in terms of more serious issues, where connectivity may not be possible due to power or signal failures. “The TribeHive team have cleverly designed and built the app so it allows all the phones in the stadium to work together. When you enter the stadium, the phone connects using a unique piece of phone-to-phone software. “If a phone can’t get a connection, those phones running the app that are connected to wifi, or via local 3G or 4G, will pull in updates to the app and share them with other users. All personal data is encrypted using state of the art technology, and other data on the phone is safe and protected.” For more details, visit: www.seagulls.co.uk
Say hello to Sami at Seagulls signing session
Sami Hyypiä will be meeting fans at the Albion’s club shop today (Friday)
Brighton and Hove Albion fans are being given the chance to meet new manager Sami Hyypiä and some of the Seagulls’ summer signings this afternoon (Friday). The club has organised a summer holidays signing session at its recently revamped new club shop at the Amex. Hyypiä will be on hand to meet fans and he will be joined by new goalkeeping coach Antti Niemi, first team coach Nathan Jones and new signings David Stockdale, Chris O’Grady and Aaron Hughes at
the American Express Community Stadium. The Seagulls are also putting on a host of free family activities on the concourse outside the store, including magicians, go-karts and football games. Activities will kick off outside the store from 1pm, with Hyypiä and the players arriving for the signing session between 2pm and 4pm, which will take place in Dick’s Bar. A spokesman for the Albion said: “We do expect that this event
will be extremely popular, and therefore fans will need to make their initial purchase in store (or bring proof of any purchase made during July - either in store or online) and staff will then direct them to the queue to meet the boss and players. “If you have yet to visit us this provides the perfect opportunity for you to get a glimpse of the brand new Brighton and Hove Albion Store, check out our new kit and Nike products, alongside the latest Seagulls merchandise.”
