REVEALED: London multi-millionaire

bankrolling Caroline Lucas campaign

James Arbib is financier son of wealthy Tory donor who sponsored Tony Blair academy Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy

A London-based multimillionaire, whose father is one of the country's wealthiest financiers, is bankrolling Caroline Lucas in her campaign to secure a second term as Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, Brighton & Hove Independent can reveal. James Arbib, 42, has given £20,000 to Ms Lucas and the Green Party - even though he has previously supported Zac Goldsmith, the Conservative MP with a record of supporting environmental causes. And despite the fact that his father, Sir Martyn Arbib, has given nearly £500,000 to the Conservative Party. Mr Arbib, a Cambridge graduate who is a former

investment analyst in the City, is a substantial investor in resource-efficient technologies. He came to wider public attention when it was reported he sold his Chelsea mansion to Hugh Grant and Jemima Khan for £18 million in 2006. Sir Martyn was knighted in 2003, two years after he sold his Perpetual fund management company for more than £1 billion, receiving £113 million in cash and shares worth an estimated £300 million. Members of the Arbib family - through the Arbib Foundation have been heavily involved, since the outset, in Langley Academy, Slough, which opened under Tony Blair's government in 2008. For his part, Mr Arbib runs Tellus Mater Foundation, a grant-making charity whose mission is "to catalyze a shift to sustainable capitalism: to change

the operating rules for capitalism so that finance can better fulfill it’s role in directing the flows of Financial Capital to production systems that preserve and enhance Natural Capital". According to the Electoral Commission, Mr Arbib gave £10,000 to Caroline Lucas on April 8, the same day as he gave £10,000 to the Green Party nationally. Commission records also show a £2,500 donation by Betterworld Ltd, a vehicle for Henry Tinsley, former chair of Green & Black's, the organic chocolate company. Betterworld has given more than £100,000 to Labour and the Liberal Democrats to help fight Conservatives in marginal seats; he is also involved in 38 Degrees, the online campaigning organisation. A further £6,000 has been given >> Continued on page 3

Donations of £20,000 will fuel Green Party campaign > Continued from page 1 by Martin Bevis Gillett, 72, after a 1,000-mile sponsored cycle ride in memory of his brother, David, a Green Party activist who died in a cycling accident in 2004. Penny Kemp, the Green Party's external communications coordinator, said donations were accepted in line with an ethical donations policy that went beyond anything required by law. She said: "We also make clear that donations are accepted without there being any direct return benefit to the donor. An important factor for us is the track record of the donor and if they are seen broadly to back the same progressive values we promote. Mr Arbib has worked for many years to support important projects in the environmental field; for example his foundation has funded some pioneering work on climate change and the economic system. We're grateful to him for supporting Caroline and the Green Party and for his emphasising the importance of keeping a Green voice in Parliament." Mr Arbib said: “I think it’s very important for the Green Party to have a voice in parliament. I support the work that Caroline Lucas has done to date and want to see it

continue in the next parliamentary term. Without a Green voice in parliament, it would be harder to get support across society for the changes that need to happen to move us into a more sustainable and environmentally stable society.” Karen Miles, a Conservative council candidate for Patcham, has stood down to look after her 29-yearold son, who suffered a mini-stroke last week - seven years after a road accident left him with brain injuries. Ms Miles will work part-time for Clarence Mitchell, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavilion.

It has responded only with obfuscation and by reference to opaque and aggregated data on the Electoral Commission website.

Thousands more to be consulted over 20mph plans Brighton and Hove City Council is writing to 23,675 more homes and businesses to ask their opinions on extending the controversial 20mph speed limit. The council is now consulting locals in Hangleton, Woodingdean, Ovingdean, Saltdean and Rottingdean to establish whether or not there is an appetite for rolling out the restricted speed limit in those areas. Consultation information is expected to arrive on doormats from Monday morning and

Members of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean branch of the city's Labour Party have expressed their anger at a decision to stop Councillor Leigh Farrow from standing again at next year's council elections. A meeting on Wednesday voted unanimously to demand the immediate re-instatement of 59-year-old Cllr Farrow. The anger of members was fuelled by a last-minute email from Mel Davis, the city party's chair, which said the branch meeting should not go ahead, because the veteran councillor - who had a double heart by-pass operation last November - was under investigation after allegedly swearing at a fellow Labour councillor.

Like a horse and carriage, Green Party candidates in Regency ward appear to come in pairs. With Jason Kitcat and his wife, Ania, both standing down at the council elections next May, the party has chosen Alex Phillips, currently a Green councillor in neighbouring Goldsmid, as a replacement - along with Tom Druitt, her fiancé. The couple get married this weekend. The party has also selected a number of other candidates, including Dick Page (who, having been selected in two wards, will decide in which he would like to stand). Whistleblower raises funding questions A former executive member of Brighton and Hove Green Party, who wishes not to be identified, has raised questions about party funding in the city. He told Brighton & Hove Independent: “It is impossible to obtain a complete picture of the funding of the Green Party's activities in Brighton simply by looking up donations to the Brighton and Hove party or to Caroline Lucas. depending on the feedback, the restrictions could be put in place next year. Early monitoring from Phase 1 in the city centre, which was introduced in April 2013, has shown a decrease in traffic speed on 74% of roads. The number of collisions and the severity of casualties are down where the 20mph limit has been implemented. Councillor Ian Davey, head of transport, said: “I’d urge people to look at the evidence and support the proposals.”

Jobless totals drop The number of unemployed people in Brighton and Hove has dipped under 4,000 for the first time since records began 22 years ago. Long-term unemployment across the city has fallen by 35% overall since this time last year, with a 47% drop in the 18-24 age group. Some observers, however, have questioned whether a national dip in unemployment has actually resulted in higher living standards once zero hours contracts and low wages are taken into account.

All this silly government paperwork is a waste of our council's time and money Jason Kitcat @jasonkitcat

Since May 2011, we have brought in some £57 million to the city for projects to improve everything from reducing pollution from buses to renovating The Level, from refurbishing the Pavilion to bringing empty buildings back into use. These are all very worthy projects and the hard work of council officers in bringing this investment to the city has been brilliant. This, however, is all one-off funding that can be invested only in one-off projects, such as building something new or fixing something old. It will not help with the vast majority of local services provided by the council

to access much-needed funding for local projects. We would much prefer to put our limited resources directly towards creating jobs and building our

It is no wonder that so back" many people get with government that there are some 124 different frustrated funding streams from different bureaucracy. We really do not need this silly government departments for economic growth and Whitehall system where councils have to divert time and money to regeneration. Much of this money is funding generating reams of paperwork - such as bin collections, care for older people, and schools - all of which need regular ongoing funding. And it pales in comparison to the £100 million financial black hole left to this council over the past few years - as a result of national government cuts and growing demand for services. Watchdog finds Argus guilty of misleading advertisers EXCLUSIVE by Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy The Argus newspaper has been found guilty of misleading advertisers by publishing an unsubstantiated claim that its audience had increased by 24.6% in a year. The newspaper - whose circulation in the six months to the end of 2013 plummeted 21.1% to 15,153, the lowest since records began - has been told not to repeat the claim. In a ruling published on Wednesday - but not yet reported by The Argus - the Advertising Standards Authority said an aggregation of daily print readers and weekly website browsers included data that had not been certified by ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulations), the independent watchdog that is the industry standard. It said: "On this basis, we considered that we had not been provided with sufficiently robust evidence to substantiate the claim that there was 24.6% growth between July and December 2012 and the same period in 2013, given that part of the data used to calculate such growth had not been audited by the ABC or an independent robust and industry recognised auditor. We therefore concluded that the claim was misleading." Two unnamed people – one of whom is believed to have been a former Argus journalist - complained about a number of claims made in the full-page advertisement published repeatedly by The Argus in February, timed to coincide with publication of the record low ABC figures. One complaint about an allegedly exaggerated claim that The Argus employed 48 journalists was not upheld: "The ASA acknowledged the complainants' concerns that ordinary readers of the newspaper would infer the claim 'journalists' to mean news reporters, features

reporters and sport reporters. "However, we understood that the definition of 'journalists' within the industry encompassed editors, subeditors, photographers, designers, features writers and news and sport reporters. “We noted that the ad was targeted at perspective (sic) advertisers who wished to place ads in the newspaper, rather than ordinary readers of the paper. We considered that prospective advertisers' interpretation of the word 'journalist' in the claim was likely to be similar to the industry definition." The advertisement was investigated under the code of the Committee of Advertising Practice - rules 3.1 (Misleading advertising), 3.7 (Substantiation) and 3.11 (Exaggeration) - and was found to be in breach.

Brighton for Peace

Volunteer up for prize

Hundreds of people are expected to join a march for peace on the city’s seafront on Sunday (August 17) as locals join together to call for end to the conflict in Gaza. People are being encouraged to meet at The Angel of Peace in Hove at 1.45pm bringing a piece of white fabric with a message of peace written on it. A silent walk will then make its way to the Concorde 2 for a day of live music.

A volunteer from Brighton is among six people short-listed as finalists of an international award. Zac Lanza, 22, teaches at a school in Tanzania and built a local family a new home - raising the money to fund the house. He has since launched his own charity, The House That Zac Built, and has built two more homes. As a finalist he has already secured a share of more than $11,000 from the organisers.

Where have all the great human beings gone?

Who can rival the great individuals of the 1950s?

A favourite little game of mine is to ask people to name as many great human beings, alive at the present moment, as they can. “How are we defining great, Graham?” “Someone who makes a significant mark in any field of human endeavour, not excluding an evil one, that will still be having an effect on the world in 50 or 100 years.” Puzzled frowns of concentration. Younger respondents, confusing greatness with celebrity, wealth or social-media trendiness, tend to shoot off names of pop stars, footballers, dot-com millionaires, or television personalities. “No, I wasn’t thinking in terms of Madonna, Maradona, Steven Jobs, or Stephen Fry.” Older folk tend to look thoughtful. “Well, the Dalai Lama, surely,” someone suggests. “And what about this new pope? The first for a while to give the impression of actually being a Christian.” I nod: interesting that two religious leaders tend to be early nominations. “Any political leaders?” I ask. More furrowed brows. “Mandela’s gone. Thatcher’s gone. Possibly Gorbachev; possibly that crook Putin.” “Any Americans?” “Obama looked good when he was elected, but what has

he achieved since, really?” “Are there any great writers around?” Everyone looks blank. “García Márquez has gone. Solzhenitsyn’s gone.” “Any great artists, then?” “Maybe that Chinese conceptual chappie, Ai Weiwei, who did that thing with all those whatsits at Tate Modern. Hockney? Damien Hirst, over my dead body!” “Musicians?” “Er, Barenboim, Brendel, I suppose, dear old Macca, possibly Jagger?” “Scientists?” “Stephen Hawking, of course.” “What about the Chinese? A rising nation with a population of over a billion, nearly a fifth of all humans alive. Can you name any great Chinese, apart from Ai Weiwei?” Silence. “Can you name any other Chinese at all?” Silence. Well, you get the drift. One might be able to rustle up a list of six or eight greatish human beings currently living. There will be some bickering about whether Bill Gates, or Aung San Suu Kyi, or Angela Merkel, or Archbishop Tutu should make it. There will be few absolutely indisputable human giants in it. None who “bestride the narrow world like a colossus”. Now, wind back to 1950, say, and make a similar list of who was around then. Here’s one I compiled earlier: Auden, Bergman, Borges, Callas, Camus, Casals, Chaplin, Churchill, Dalí, de Gaulle, Einstein, Eisenhower, Eliot, Fellini, Garbo, Gide, Hammarskjöld, Heifetz, Hemingway, Hitchcock, Jung,

Kennedy, King, Le Corbusier, Mann, Mao,Menuhin,Monroe,Montgomery, Nasser, Nehru, Nijinksy, Olivier, Oppenheimer, Pasternak, Picasso, Presley, Prokofiev, Rubinstein, Russell, Sartre, Schweitzer, Shaw, Stalin, Steinbeck, Stravinsky, Teresa, Tito, Toscanini, Wittgenstein. All these 50 were alive in 1950. All towering figures who changed the world - admittedly not always for the better. One could probably think of 50 more. So what has happened? Is modern society - with its emphasis on social equality, its stifling bureaucracy and safety rules, its satirical tendency to cut down anyone who stands tall - inimical to the production of greatness? Is it that the phenomenon of greatness has been replaced by that of shallow celebrity - something that scarcely existed back then - so that, instead of 50 or 100 greats, we now have untold thousands of ephemeral minor talents? Or is it - a pet theory of mine that as populations explode, so human extremes contract into a uniform mediocrity? All the great historical centres of human achievement - ancient Athens, Renaissance Florence, Elizabethan London, Goethe’s Weimar - had tiny populations by modern standards, whereas our vast megalopolises teem with ants. I leave you to ponder this enigma.

An open day at Preston Circus Fire Station scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled. East Sussex Fire and Rescue confirmed the event would not go ahead due to “unforeseen circumstances”. Saturday is the final day of eight days of consecutive strikes by the Fire Brigade’s Union in a longrunning national dispute with the government over pensions. The 999 Fun Day on Hove Lawns on Sunday (10 August) was also cancelled because of the weather.

The historic Palace Pier - known these days as Brighton Pier - will feature on a new set of stamps. The Royal Mail is releasing a new series of ten stamps featuring landmarks from various seaside towns on September 18. Collectors will be able to buy a first day cover postcard issued just for Brighton, postmarked with Brighton and the issue date. Royal Mail said: “This issue captures the spirit of the seaside experience through the buildings.”

Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, has criticised the government for censoring an official report into the effects of fracking. Ms Lucas, who was arrested for her part in protests against shale gas extraction, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme the version of the report which was released was inadequate. She said: “This report would be comical if it wasn’t so serious because there is just so much of it that’s been blacked out.”

Not in my name: Why I am a Jewish anti-Zionist Tony Greenstein @TonyGreenstein

Like many Jews, I grew up in the shadow of the holocaust. I can remember reading, at an early age, Lord Russell’s Scourge of the Swastika and wondering how human beings could behave with such cruelty towards each other. The lesson I drew was that Jewish people, above all, should oppose all racism. That is why I find the attack on the people of Gaza so unforgiveable. The excuses, the "rockets" and "self-defence", are worthy of Goebbels, at his worst. Hamas is but the latest of the "new" Hitlers - from Nasser and the PLO to Hizbollah - that Israel manufactures to justify a permanent state of war. Hamas was virtually created by the Israeli state. David Shipler, a former reporter for the New York Times, cites the military governor of Gaza. He wrote: "[Brigadier General Yitzhak Segev] once told me how he had financed the Islamic movement [ie Hamas] as a counterweight to the PLO and the communists. 'The Israeli government gave me a budget and the military

Anti-Semitism was a "natural" phenomenon. Before 1941 and the holocaust, Zionists were the Nazis’ favoured group within the German Jewish community. The obscene use of the holocaust as a propaganda weapon ignores Zionism’s actual role during the holocaust, when the policy of the Zionist leaders was to prioritise the building of a state above rescue of the Jews. They opposed rescue to anywhere but Palestine. One of the most shocking statements came from Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion: "If I knew that it was possible to save all the children in Germany by bringing them over to England, but only half of them by transporting them to Palestine, then I would opt for the second alternative." Ben-Gurion’s official biographer, Shabtai Teveth, wrote: ‘‘If there was a line in Ben-Gurion’s mind between the beneficial disaster and an alldestroying catastrophe, it must have been a very fine one." Laura Lockington @bookloversupper

Love, Love Me Do by Mark Haysom This book transports you immediately straight back to the 1960s, with this touching and heart-warming tale. It's a book about love, in all its complicated and messy forms. It’s set in 1963, the year that The Beatles first top the charts, the year that Martin Luther King had a dream, and the year that Truman Bird unceremoniously drags his family from their Brighton home and abandons them in a leaky caravan in the middle of the Ashdown Forest. And then disappears. Christie Bird married Truman too young. She’d had a great job in Hanningtons (and the description of that creaking, charmingly oldfashioned department store is wonderful) and didn’t want to leave work. But, back then, that’s what was expected.

Three children later in quick succession and married to the chancer and charmer Truman, she is bewildered as to how on earth she ended up here. In a draughty, cramped caravan in the middle of nowhere. Truman is a liar and a cheat. But so far he’s always managed to get away with it. His dodgy deals and his gangster friends remind us that there was a very good reason that Brighton has always attracted the low life. But life has a way of helping people along with their dreams and love is never far away. You’ll be cheering the wonderful characters along as hope and optimism win the day. Mark Haysom will be appearing at Bookish Supper Society on September 10. Tickets are available from www.tabl.com or Brighton Dome ticket office: 01273 709709.

Latest TV: Ready for action on August 28 Tim Ridgway @LatestTVBtn

Cue the trumpet fanfare, light the fuse on the fireworks – history has been made! Local television has been made in Brighton and Hove. After months of hard toil, the studio is now up and running. For the next few weeks ahead of our launch, it will be practise, practise,

practise, so that come August 28 any cobwebs will be well and truly blown away. I have to admit that I still cannot believe how good it looks. On the surface, the studio does seem quite basic: a single chair on a black stage in front of a three-sided green screen. But, thanks to a little bit of advanced technology and a few sprinkles of magic dust, hey presto, the news is being presented from the end of the Palace Pier! And the sport? Well, we can do

that from wherever we want: the Amex, Hove County Ground, the King Alfred. Anything is possible. It's not just the news that we have been practising. Former Talksport radio DJ Mike Mendoza has been in and around, doing dry-runs of his newspaper review show; we've had the Brighton Lights gang running riot (in a good way); and the Latest Homes Live gang got their property show off the ground. All in all it's looking brill. And once the adreneline

The basic studio: a single chair on a black stage in front of a three-sided green screen

has settled down, then I'm confident that we'll have some amazing shows going live on Channel 8 on August 28. Having finally got into the studio, we had to think of a momentous way to mark it. We thought about royalty, or a celebrity. But Princess Anne just wouldn't cut the mustard for Brighton's TV channel. Neither would any of those renting places down on Millionaire's Row on Hove seafront. We needed more than a simple plaque and a bit of ribbon. Which is why we jumped at the chance of having Rev Martin Poole along to bless the new studio. What's more, it was timed for August 11, the day of St Clare, the patron saint of television. Martin is far from the stereotypical local vicar. Having worked in television for 30 years, he is well-versed in what it takes to get a channel off the ground. Sporting his open necked shirt, he made clear during the short ceremony that this was not about religion, but about bringing good vibes to the venue and the people behind the channel. He said: "It's great to be able to bless our local television station ahead of its launch in Brighton, on the very day when the church remembers the patron saint of

television. St Clare is also patroness of those with sore eyes, so I shall be praying that this will not afflict any of those who work at or watch Latest TV.” Following the multi-faith ceremony, our founder Bill Smith had the best comment: "With God looking down on us, there's no stopping us now!" It's difficult to disagree. And finally, a reminder: ahead of the launch, an open day will be held at the studios in Manchester Street on Tuesday, August 19. Whether you are a TV producer, an interested member of the public, or represent a local business, come along and find out what local TV offers you. The open day is from 10am to 8pm and gives you a chance to see the new TV studios, and if you like, to be on TV! If you want to socialise over a glass of bubbly then pop in at 6pm. We look forward to meeting you! Cheerio! Tim Ridgway, an award-winning journalist, is head of news at Latest TV.

Charity’s anniversary ball Domestic abuse charity RISE is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with a fundraising ball. The September 11 event is taking place at Brighton and Hove Albion’s American Express Community Stadium and will include a fourcourse meal, dancing, and a night of entertainment. It has been organised by supporters of the charity and guests will be invited to gather to celebrate two decades of its vital work and raise money for the charity in the process. With domestic abuse affecting a huge number locally and demand increasing year on year, the support of local people and businesses has helped RISE buck the national trend and actually increase its services in the face of austerity.

Lorna Stagg, who is organising the ball, said: "We know how vital RISE services are, some of us from personal experience. “When we have a brilliant local charity like RISE it is important we value, support and cherish it. “We must never take it for granted and want to celebrate its achievements and help raise money to make sure there is help for anyone who needs it.”

Shoes off in Brighton

Donate summer essentials Family fun day

Brighton and Hove has been named as one of the UK’s most house-proud cities, just missing out on the top spot to Leeds. The city was ranked the joint fourth house-proud city with Aberdeen and its domestic standards leading the way in the south of England. A survey found 80% of people quizzed in Brighton and Hove always remove their shoes at home, but less than a quarter expect guests to do likewise.

Brighton Housing Trust wants local people to donate sun cream and light summer clothes to be distributed to their clients across Brighton and Hove. A team of young people from the Prince’s Trust have already been collecting items for the charity, asking local businesses, friends and family and members of the public for donations. There is still demand for sun cream supplies, and anyone who would like to donate should call 01273 326844.

More than 200 children enjoyed a free fun day dedicated to local emergency services. Families flocked to Mayberry Garden Centre in Portslade for a range of hands-on fun, with youngsters encouraged to try out spraying a fire house, having their fingerprints taken and learning how to give CPR. There was a also a teddy bear hospital and the chance to meet dogs from the Hove Guide Dogs and climb inside a host of emergency services vehicles.

Curious about what life was like in Brighton and Hove more than 5,000 years ago? Then head along to an open archaeological site in Whitehawk Hill on Saturday, August 23 between 11am and 5pm. Volunteers will be on hand to talk about displays, hold demonstrations and lift the lid on the community excavation. The project is focusing on Whitehawk Camp - a 5,500-year-old Stone Age site on Whitehawk Hill (sometimes called Race Hill).

A campaign to open a community pub in the Moulsecoomb and Bevendean area has been backed by Simon Kirby, the MP for Brighton Kemptown. He has contacted a number of breweries on behalf of local campaigners who want to reopen The Bevendean, or Bevy, in an effort to convince them to donate some equipment to the project. The people behind the plans need £4,000 to renovate and equip the cellar at the currently-closed pub.

A housing association plans to build a nine-storey building which will house 76 flats and 7,500 square foot of office space in Hove. Hyde Housing wants to demolish its existing offices in Davigdor Road, Hove, near the junction with Lyon Close, and replace it with the new scheme. According to a planning application filed with the city council, around 40% of the total number of flats would be affordable housing. Seven would be wheelchair accessible.

The Tour of Britain, which arrives in Brighton on September 13, will provide a substantial boost to the city economy. Sir Bradley Wiggins will defend his title in this year’s event, with thousands expected to flock to Brighton and Hove to see the penultimate stage finish in the city centre. It is estimated that each stage of last year’s race generated around £3 million for the local area in which it was taken part.

Chelsea Building Society wants locals to suggest a charity in Brighton or Hove which is deserving of a cash boost. The company is offering a share of £150,000 to a local good cause and wants people to pop into its Western Road branch to suggest worthy recipients. Nominations can be made between Monday (August 18) and Saturday (August 23) and will also be accepted at Yorkshire Building Society’s agency in Shoreham High Street.

A pair of blue plaques has been unveiled at Brighton Station commemorating the life of two important figures. David Mocatta, the architect who designed Brighton Station, and John Saxby, a pioneer in railway signalling, now both have plaques at the station’s entrance. Councillor Denise Cobb, the deputy mayor, and surviving relatives of the two men were on hand to unveil the plaques. Tribute was also paid to the late Bill McIlroy who had long-campaigned for a new plaque for Saxby.

Work to improve the public space in front of St Bartholomew’s Church will begin on Monday. Brighton and Hove City Council plans to open up Providence Place Gardens, provide new street frontage along Providence Place and create a pocket squad at the bottom of Ann Street, complete with public seating. The aim is to create an oasis of calm for people living and working in the area as well as making it more appealing to visitors.

Brighton Dome has been unveiled as the host of the 2015 World Muscle Society Congress. It will run from September 30 until October 4 and is expected to attract more than 500 international delegates. The congress takes place in a different country each year, enabling scientists and clinicians in the neuromuscular field to share knowledge, collaborate and network. The entire Dome has been booked out, with the Corn Exchange being used for exhibitions and the café for break-out sessions.

Cuts were avoidable

Veterans' Amex visit

People living in Brighton and Hove lead the country when it comes to giving away data about themselves in return for freebies. A nationwide survey found an above average number of locals could be persuaded to share data in return for a special offer. The survey revealed 46% of locals would share data in return for free delivery compared to a national average of 31%. The same number of locals would do likewise for moneyoff vouchers.

Controversial cuts to local fire services could have been avoided, according to a Labour hopeful. Nancy Platts is the Labour candidate for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven in next year’s general election. She believes the fact David Cameron found £2 million for Eastbourne Pier is proof £750,000 of cuts to fire services in Brighton and Hove were unnecessary. She said residents would feel “bemused” that money could be found so soon after the decision to cut local fire services.

Brighton and Hove Albion welcomed a group from Blind Veterans UK’s local centre for the Seagulls match with Sheffield Wednesday. The veterans were invited as special guests as part of the club’s efforts to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. They were introduced to supporters on the pitch and Natasha Cartwright, of Blind Veterans UK, said: “Our veterans felt hugely privileged to attend the match. The fans’ reaction was absolutely amazing.” Racing

The highlight of the day, bar the seven thrilling races, was the Best Dressed Lady competition, sponsored by James Ross Jewellers. Suzi Burbridge, from Hassocks, was selected as the winner, taking home an 18 carat diamond necklace. It was the fourth consecutive Frosts Ladies Day at the popular track and there was plenty of entertainment on hand throughout the afternoon for racegoers, including singers, stilt walkers, a giant deck chair, a shopping village and stalls from major outlets.

Business Albion appoint new head of marketing

Brighton and Hove Albion have appointed a former season ticket holder as the club’s new head of marketing. Tom Gorringe (pictured) joined the Seagulls earlier this summer from Cardiff City where he had been sales and marketing manager. He previously worked for Portsmouth FC, being given a permanent job after impressing Brighton’s south coast rivals during a year’s placement while studying for a business degree at the University of Portsmouth. Now as head of marketing at the Albion, Mr Gorringe will liaise with each of the

club’s departments as well as supporters to make sure the Seagulls are offering fans exactly what they want. He has already unveiled plans to improve match days, with local bands lined up to play on an outdoor stage before games alongside more entertainment outside the Amex. Mr Gorringe explained: “We will be looking to build a package of activities for every fixture that ensure that fans can arrive early, have a drink with their mates and be entertained.” And as a fan who first watched the Seagulls at the Goldstone, Mr Gorringe couldn’t be happier having landed a job with the club. “Having sat in the rain in stands at the Withdean it is a genuine pleasure to come to a great stadium to work every day,” he said. “I am really looking forward to meeting with the fans, hearing their criticisms, ideas and suggestions to help move us forward and hopefully putting some of these into place.”

Confidence returns to the high street Richard Morris @BrightonIndy A host of big names are setting up shop in Brighton and Hove signalling an increasing confidence in the city’s high street. Churchill Square is in the middle of revamping its frontage, with most of the re-designed outlets open for business. Topshop and Topman is the only store yet to open the doors to its new unit, with the impressive looking façade promising the fashion store will be ready for launch later this season. Little more than a stone’s throw away from the shopping centre, healthy-Asian-inspired fast food restaurant ITSU opens next month, on the corner of North Street and West Street, while TGI Fridays is transforming the former Post Office in Ship Street. New Look has also invested in a store redesign for its Western Road branch and Metro Bank is opening a new premises between the Clock Tower and Churchill Square. the city is our office Bonett’s

Multi-listing. What is it and has it a place in the UK property market? About 12 years ago, we at Bonett’s joined Team Association, an affinity group of independent agents around the UK. At the time, I believe 12 other local independent estate agents’ offices joined too. As a buyer, you could register with one and you would receive all the properties they listed between them. The routine for the agent was that, when you were asked to sell a property, you would keep it on your own database for 72 hours, then, if you had not already sold it, you would multi-list it through the network. It would go out to the local Team agents, plus throughout the UK. To us, it made complete sense and still does.

As a seller, you get not just the selling power of your instructed agent, but also the clout of all the others. It would list on all their individual websites with all the details and photographs but, when an agent wanted a viewing for a potential buyer of theirs, it would all be dealt with by ‘your’ agent, so you would get the clout of all the team group whilst it was all handled by the one…the best of both worlds! You may wonder why agents would cooperate in the first place. At Bonett’s, we thought it was very much in our clients’ interest to maximise their exposure locally and nationally. Of course, with the large property portals now

putting all our properties on a national/international platform, multi-listing could be seen as redundant. But…websites don’t sell properties, agents do! Have you had that call or email from an agent who gave you such great information that you went out and bought a place you would never have even known about or considered to view? That’s agency. Also, the agent who thinks outside the box and encourages you to drop the need for the double garage and an acre of ground and you buy a terraced house with on street parking and a patio because in fact, that’s what you wanted but had not quite realised.

As the seller, you paid a sole agency fee but had multi-agency listing. If the agents cooperated on selling the property, they would on completion share the fee. How could the seller lose? So, although not many agents have dared step into this arena,

it is clearly in clients’ interest to share property and we think it should be considered more broadly in the industry. We still love it and do it! Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A.

Bluebird Tea Co takes off to help make a cool cuppa We all know that Brighton and Hove is a fairly saturated market when it comes to coffee. Made ever more cool in recent years, the dark, hot beverage is drunk by thousands of us from our favourite independents each and every day. But what about tea? Can Bluebird Tea Co, a new independent tea shop, sway the cappuccino-lovers of Brighton and Hove towards something different? Opening its doors three months ago, Bluebird Tea Co. is run by Mike and Krisi, a couple who utilised their shared love of tea, plus business knowledge, in order to bring the Bluebird brand to Brighton. Originally trading online and heavily influenced by Canadian tea trends, the duo saw an opportunity for world-class tea mixology to be introduced to the United Kingdom. And, luckily for us, they chose Brighton as the city in which to do so. Nestled beautifully on Gardner Street in the North Laine, Bluebird Tea Co. is hip and cool, with a

touch of Brighton quirkiness. The shop itself is sparse, with emphasis on drawing attention to the magnificent tea blends, takeaway drinks counter, and scaffolding shelves stocked with trendy teapots, strainers, and equipment for both novice and experienced tea-drinkers. Many of the gadgets on sale are from independent start-ups, with Bluebird openly supporting Kickstarter campaigns to ensure that great tea gizmos can get off the ground. The range of teas here is extraordinary: green, black, mate, rooibos, herbal, and oolong all adorn the righthand wall in glimmering chrome tins. Labelled with consideration, the collection of blends is easy to navigate and certainly appeals to a wide demographic of teadrinkers. Sold by weight, all teas

Sipping on an iced Mojitea, this green-tea-based blend was ideal for the sweltering heat of the day: cool, refreshing with peppermint and lime, it was testament to why it is one of Bluebird’s top-sellers. Smelling lids full of beautiful tea is a great way to explore the blends on offer. From smooth and sweet peppermint cream, calming lavender, fruity strawberry lemonade to almondinfused cherry bakewell, each tea is bespoke and individual. All teas are also made without added preservatives, syrups, or sugars. You can even bring your own tins and have them filled with Bluebird’s collection of blends. Krisi, Mike and the team are knowledgeable and love to share suggestions whether it’s relaxation, weight-loss, digestion, or energy you’re looking for from your cuppa.

of appreciation, these patterns contribute nothing to your enjoyment of the beverage. Latte Art is very much an acquired skill that requires either professional training or watching copious YouTube videos. This doesn’t, however, make it big or cool. And it certainly isn’t clever. It’s a game that the chains tend not to play and with good reason. Depicting the Mona Lisa atop your morning coffee will take a fair bit

longer than if we just go ahead and pour your Latte the traditional way. It will add nothing to the taste and will most definitely add to the time you spend waiting. As I was reminded on a recent trip out with a friend and her three-year-old, there are many different parenting styles out there. During this same trip, I was also reminded that, of the many different styles of parenting, it’s really only my own that I like. See if you can spot it from the following list. First up is the laissez-faire parent. These tend to be easiest to spot at the park; they’ll be the ones deep in conversation on their phone or staring at a screen, seemingly oblivious to their child - who will either be a) causing havoc, or b) approaching other grown-ups who actually seem to notice that they exist. At the other end of the scale is the rule-maker parent. From not letting their child get down from the table until they’ve remembered what colour their car is, to chastising the smallest digression from perfect manners, the rulemaker is made of stern stuff and will not be cowed by tears, pleas, or any such nonsense. Then there’s the attachment types. Popularly pictured as the ones wearing cardigans and sandals, breastfeeding toddlers wherever and whenever (the mums, I mean), these folk can be more challenging to spot. They’re likely to be close by to their child wherever they are, but that may be your only clue. Then there’s the liquorice allsorts of parents. These don’t have a single, common approach, they just do what works. Sometimes it’s gentle, sometimes it involves stern words or walking along with a crying toddler in a buggy, worried that to all the world they look like an uncaring parent, when in actual fact I’ve they’ve tried everything to calm their child down, to no avail, and just need to get home. So, which will it be?

Travel A beautiful city whichever way you look at it Richard Morris @BrightonIndy One of the first things anyone notices upon arrival in Edinburgh is how beautiful the city is - both architecturally and in terms of its natural surroundings. With flights to Scotland at a competitive and affordable level, there really has never been a better time to pop north of the border without having to suffer a gruelling drive the length of England in order to get there. Now, anyone living in the south of England can jet to Edinburgh to enjoy a haggis and wee dram in less time than it takes to cook a Sunday roast. And there are plenty of reasons why a short break in the Scottish capital is worth booking. While Glasgow has enjoyed a spell in the international spotlight recently, due to the Commonwealth Games, Edinburgh has long been a favourite destination for visitors - largely due to its outstanding cultural offer and eye-catching architecture. If you don’t take time to look around you in Edinburgh, you really are missing out on much of what is so appealing about the city. If, however, you want a more all-encompassing view of the city, a trip to Arthur’s Seat is definitely for you. One of four hill forts dating back more than 2,000

years, Arthur’s Seat in Holyrood Park is a comfortable walk away from Edinburgh Castle and offers unrivalled stunning panoramic views of the city. Described by Robert Louis Stevenson as “a hill for magnitude, a mountain in virtue of its bold design”, a visit to Arthur’s Seat is a perfect way to relax and breathe in the delights of Edinburgh from a relatively easy-to-reach vantage point. For a different but equallyimpressive look at Edinburgh, Camera Obscura and World of Illusions offer 360-degree panoramas, alongside a host of interesting exhibitions set over five fun-filled floors. Among the hands-on optical exhibits are an apparently shrinking room, a vortex tunnel straight out of a science fiction film, and a mirror maze. It might be Scotland’s oldest purpose-built attraction, dating back to 1834, but it has been regularly and impressively updated and remains a relevant and interesting way to spend an afternoon. The Scottish Whisky Experience on the Royal Mile is another must-visit for anyone wanting to experience a full taste of Edinburgh. Not only are visitors shown the whisky-making process up close, but they will also be given a glimpse inside the vault that contains the biggest collection of Scotch whiskies in the world. It isn’t just for the

connoisseur either. Experts are on hand to help visitors select the perfect tipple for tasting, as well as offering a tutorial on nosing and tasting different variations. Anyone needing an afternoon of fresh air to recover from any impromptu whisky sessions should look no further than Edinburgh Zoo. Not only does the zoo boast a breeding pair of pandas alongside an array of exotic and rare animals, it also stages one of Edinburgh’s most iconic events: the penguin parade. Once a day, for as far back as anyone The statue of Greyfriars Bobby can remember, the zoo’s penguins are And, on the subject of adorable allowed to leave temporarily their award-winning enclosure for a animals, no trip to Edinburgh quick stroll around parts of the would be complete without a visit park. It started decades ago, when to Greyfriars Church in the city’s a keeper accidentally left the door Old Town. Legend has it that a loveable open and found himself being stalked by a gang of penguins Skye terrier was so attached while he went about the rest of to his 19th-century owner that his work. They enjoyed it so much he spent the 14 years after his it has become tradition, with all death guarding the grave until he the park’s penguins given the himself passed away. As a result, Greyfriars Bobby option of stretching their legs has become one of Edinburgh’s every afternoon.

Beauty Pretty Good Thinking It’s the middle of August and summer may feel a little like it is over, with all this windy and rainy weather. I feel certain, however, as with our British summers, there is still room for another quick heatwave blast before the autumn sets in. With that in mind, my focus is on getting those toes to twinkle ready for another round of flip-flop wearing. What better way to get your feet feeling ultra-clean and glossy than by starting with a decent foot cream. This week, I have been trying Burt’s Bees super-creamy foot lotion with

Sally Wynn

peppermint. providing triple treat against your dry, overworked feet. A botanical blend of oils and extracts made from witch hazel, tea tree, parsley, rosemary and sodium bicarbonate to help neutralise those nasty foot odours. The peppermint oil helps to invigorate tired feet, while sunflower, wheat germ, and coconut oils nourish and moisturise rough, calloused feet and heels. with the final benefit of beeswax sealing in the goodness for a complete pampered experience. Available at a not-too-unreasonable price

online or in your local high street. This cream smells divine and really does make your toes tingle. You need to use only a small amount to see quick results - which means a decentsize tube will go a long way.

To finish off our lovely soft and nourished feet, we must turn our attention to our toes. I am loving Rimmel London Salon Pro nail varnish. With more than 40 fantastic shades to choose from, including new fresh colours straight from the catwalk, you are spoiled for choice. This nail varnish is up to 10 days chipresistant nail colour with gel shine finish. The bottle includes a precision maxi brush for salon perfection! Which I have to admit is the best nail varnish brush I have used. It claims to have all the benefits of a professional salon manicure. Strengthening base coat, top coat, and gel shine all in one. Which I am inclined to agree does work. I have truly found it to be long-lasting and it definitely does not fade after a dip in the pool or a stint in the sun. At a great affordable price of under £5, and with many places

most-loved sons and a statue of the dog, just a stone’s throw away from his master’s final resting place, is an attraction in itself, with locals and tourists queueing up each day to rub his nose for luck. It might not be a particularly exotic holiday destination, but Edinburgh has charm, culture and history in abundance. And a penguin parade. How many other cities can say that?

offering three for two, what is not to like! Sarah Morgan is on holiday.

Sussex face tough Yorkshire task before one-day cup action at Hove

Richard Morris @BrightonIndy Sussex CCC shift their attention away from the short game to the LV County Championship this weekend with a daunting trip to table-topping Yorkshire. The Headingly outfit are the country’s most successful county side, with 31 championships to their name. They have, however, not added a title since 2001, but hopes are high that they can clinch the league this season - and supporters will be expecting them to see off Sussex in the match which begins today (Friday). Yorkshire head into the match in good form, sitting top of the County Championship and already through to the quarter finals of the one-day cup following a ten-wicket win over Derbyshire earlier this week. They restricted Derbyshire to

just 151, with Adil Rashid (3-45) and Rich Pyrah (3-25) the pick of the bowling attack. Openers Adam Lyth (67) and Alex Lees (69) had little trouble in chasing down the total in less than 30 overs. It is fair to say, then, that Yorkshire will face Sussex full of confidence. Sussex return to Hove on Wednesday for the latest game in their Royal London One-Day Cup campaign, with action against Glamorgan getting underway from 2pm. Much like the Sharks’ T20 campaign, Sussex’s Royal London results have been something of a mixed bag so far. The county has won three and lost four of its seven games in the competition, with the latest result a disappointing and frustrating rain-interrupted loss to Kent under the Duckworth-Lewis (DL) system. In truth Sussex, who collapsed at the end, losing seven wickets for less than 60 runs, didn’t look

likely to secure the win at any stage of their batting, despite an encouraging and at times attractive knock from Ed Joyce, who fell three short of his half century. They have, however, displayed some positive form in the competition, not least pace bowler Yasir Arafat. The bowler took five wickets for just 36 runs in a recent victory over Somerset, with three coming in just one over, while Joyce has impressed with the bat. Young talent Will Beer has transferred his T20 form into the Royal London Cup, albeit without perhaps the eye-catching figures he plundered in the 20 over game, and in Luke Wright the county boasts one of the competition’s most explosive talents. Tickets for the Glamorgan game are still available online at: www. sussexcricket.co.uk or by calling 0844 264 0201.

Brighton and Hove Albion fans saw another crowd favourite depart the Amex yesterday (Thursday) with flying winger Will Buckley sold to Sunderland. Buckley joined Sunderland for a fee believed to be around the £2.5 million mark and has linked up with former Albion manager Gus Poyet. The 24-year-old, beloved by Brighton regulars because of his gung-ho, swashbuckling style, penned a three-year deal with the Stadium of Light outfit after heading north on Wednesday night for a medical. Supporters, however, were increasingly-hopeful the club would soften the blow by landing long-time target Stephen Ward last night (Thursday). Reports coming from the Midlands yesterday afternoon suggested the Seagulls had finally agreed a deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the Irish international left-back, who enjoyed a fruitful seasonlong loan at the Amex last season. The 28-year-old was said to be travelling south to discuss personal terms, with Wolves manager Kenny Jackett quoted in the Birmingham Post as saying: “The clubs have agreed and now it’s down to Brighton and the player. “All of us thank him for what

he’s done and wish him all the best.” Ward played almost every league game for the Albion last season, cementing a place in what was one of the division’s stringiest defences and proving a hugely popular player among supporters. If confirmed, Ward’s signing would appease supporters who have seen Albion lose Matthew Upson on a free transfer and sell both Leo Ulloa and Buckley for an estimated total topping £10 million. Tony Bloom, the club’s chairman, reassured supporters that the Albion would have a competitive team by the time the transfer window closes at the end of the month and the signing of Ward would be a big step towards that goal. In other news, the Seagulls will take part in a new broadcasting initiative in tandem with the Football League. Seagulls fans will be able to watch the club’s away fixture at Leeds United on Tuesday (August 19) at the Amex as part of a beam back screening. Full details will be made available on the club’s official website over the coming day. Visit: www.seagulls.co.uk

Will Buckley has left, but fans could have good news soon

Big match preview: Birmingham City vs Brighton and Hove Albion

I thought before the game that we would need to be patient and that we would need to keep the ball moving and keep our concentration for the entire 90 minutes. “It is never easy to play these type of games. An early goal would have eased things a little when it was 0-0, but we had to be patient and ensure that we did not concede, while also trying to make it physical for them as well. “Their tactics were to sit very deep in numbers and it did make it very difficult. “I did not want the game to go to extra time. We are a bit short of numbers and if we had to play 120 minutes it would not have been good preparation for the Birmingham game.”

Action Man: Sami Hyypiä will be hoping his side can secure a win against Birmingham City tomorrow (Saturday) Richard Morris @BrightonIndy Seagulls fans heading north to the second city tomorrow (Saturday) will be looking for signs that Sami Hyypiä’s new system is sinking in to the team’s collective conscience. A disappointing opening-day defeat to Sheffield Wednesday saw eyebrows raised among some sections of the Amex faithful over a lack of attacking width - with a reliance on the team’s full-backs to provide attacking impetus. St Andrews proved a happy hunting ground for Hyypiä’s predecessor, with Oscar Garcia engineering a 1-0 win against Birmingham City at a similar stage last season, thanks to a well-taken Andrew Crofts goal. The assist that day came from Kemy Agustien and the playmaker is likely to find himself involved again tomorrow as a result of a suspension to Crofts and an injury to Dale Stephens. Whether he starts, however, remains to be seen. Agustien was again on the receiving end of some post-match criticism from sections of the Seagulls support in the wake of Tuesday’s Capital One Cup win over Cheltenham Town. There has always been a feeling that Agustien is the type of player who would benefit from a run in the team in order to

fine-tune and then maintain his sharpness. It is something of an open secret that the Albion are in the market for another attackminded midfielder, suggesting the pressure is on Agustien to prove his worth over the coming games. He clearly has natural talent in abundance but will need to illustrate he is capable of marshalling it in a productive and consistent manner. Brighton could well have added new recruits to Hyypiä’s squad by the time they travel to Birmingham. The club confirmed the departure of Will Buckley on Thursday afternoon but had not ruled out announcing a new arrival or arrivals of their own in the run-up to the weekend’s action. Indeed, the capture of Stephen Ward was expected to be confirmed last night (Thursday), presumably meaning the Ireland international would be able to play at Birmingham. Inigo Calderon performed admirably enough at left-back against Sheffield Wednesday, while Adam Chicksen played well against an albeit toothless Cheltenham team, but securing the services of a genuine first choice left-sided defender has long been the Seagulls priority. If Ward is confirmed fans can expect him to slot straight into the starting line-up. Birmingham City are notoriously poor on their home

turf. In fact, the Blues only secured their first home win since October 1 earlier this week with their 3-1 extra time win over Cambridge United. They had to rely on captain Phil Caddis’ 95th minute strike to edge them ahead before Mark Duffy added a third a short while later. Like Brighton, Birmingham lost their first game of the season, ending on the wrong side of a 2-0 scoreline away at Middleborough in a game in which the Blues failed to register a single strike on their hosts’ goal. Birmingham actually managed more league goals (58) than the Albion (55) last season despite finishing just one place above the dreaded drop zone. Brighton, however, leaked a massive 34 goals less than Brum in their 46 regular season games - a stat which explains the discrepancy in the clubs’ final positions when considering their goal tallies. Craig Mackail-Smith, fresh from finding the net in the midweek cup win, will be hoping to get a first league start under Hyypiä while Birmingham’s chief threat will surely come from set pieces.

Likely line-up: (4231) Stockdale, Calderon, Greer, Hughes, Ward, Ince, Forster-Caskey, Toko, Mackail-Smith, March, Lua Lua Likely subs: Ankergren, Dunk, Chicksen, Agustien, Bruno, O’Grady, Fenelon.
