THE YEAR THEY MOVED THE GCSE GOALPOSTS Greg Hadfield and Frank le Duc @BrightonIndy For a generation of teenagers, it was the most important day of their academic careers. So far. For hundreds of hardworking teachers in Brighton and Hove, it was the culmination of days, weeks, and months of hard work. Again. And it all came down to a sealed envelope and a single page of A4. As always. Only this time, for the first time, there was one question on everyone’s lips: Who moved the goalposts? The answer, of course, is the politicians, the bureaucrats, and the examination bosses - who are probably enjoying their summer holidays. Somewhere else. The truth is that rule changes affected benchmark GCSE performance at schools in the city – and the country
- as thousands of students celebrated, to varying degrees, their GCSE results. Among state schools in Brighton and Hove, Brighton Aldridge Community Academy was the only one to record an improvement in the benchmark of five good GCSEs: A* to C grades, including English and maths. The Brighton and Hove average dropped to 54% from 62.6% a year ago. Dorothy Stringer School recorded the best results in the state sector as 65% achieved five good GCSEs, compared with 72% last year. The school said that 27% of the grades were A* or A. Richard Bradford, the headteacher, said: “I am proud of the students who worked hard and challenged themselves do their best. >> Continued on page 5

Election battle of hedge-fund financiers Lord Stanly Fink - the “godfather” of the hedge-fund industry and one of the wealthiest donors to the Conservative Party - is the latest outsider to pour money into the politics of Brighton and Hove. Lord Fink, the former chief executive of the Man Group who has given nearly £500,000 to the Conservative Party - has given £3,000 to Simon Kirby, the Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown. The disclosure, made in official Electoral Commission records, coincides with a second £10,000 donation to Brighton and Hove District Labour Party by Sue Ruddick, whose husband is Simon Ruddick, a hedge-fund financier with a personal fortune put at £45 million. Members of the Ruddick family - which has a history of financing the Liberal Democrats - have personal connections to Peter Kyle, the Labour Party parliamentary candidate for Hove. >> Who pays for politics? Brighton Digital Festival announces six art works Brighton Digital Festival has announced six new art works that will be exhibited across the city as part of its month-long celebration of digital culture. The works have been made possible through the festival’s arts and technology commissions, which were offered to artists for the first time this year. As part of an expanded array of funding opportunities at the festival, the commissions support the development and exhibition of art works across Brighton and Hove. In addition, the successful applicants will receive guidance and support from Laurence Hill, the festival’s newly-appointed arts adviser. Mr Hill said: “The grassroots nature of Brighton Digital Festival is one of its unique features and the arts and tech commissions
have given us the opportunity to augment the already excellent work coming out of the arts and digital communities in the city. “The selected commissions will both challenge and engage, and alongside work commissioned by the city’s galleries, I have no doubt they will add to the festival’s growing reputation for digital art. “I’m particularly thrilled that many of the commissions will be presented away from a traditional gallery setting in empty shops and public spaces. It’s important to me and to the festival that we continue to introduce new audiences to digital art and this is an excellent way of doing so.” Hidden Lines, by Oliver Hein Venue: To be confirmed: disused shop in central Brighton Dates: September 1-28 Times: After dark

Police have arrested four people over a suspicious parcel sent to the army recruitment office in Brighton. The suspect package closed the city centre for several hours back on February 13. Parcels were also sent to offices in six other towns. Police in Northern Ireland this week revealed two men (aged 35 and 46) and two women (21 and 44) had been arrested in Londonderry. They were taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim police station for interview.
A café in Brighton has become only the second place in the UK to have a bitcoin ATM installed. Customers of Marwood Café on Ship Street will now be able to buy bitcoins using banknotes. Each customer buying bitcoins – which can be used to pay for things online and have a fluctuating value - will be limited to £1,000 of transactions per month. Twenty pounds worth of bitcoins purchased three years ago is now worth an estimated £8,000.
Geoffrey Theobald, the leader of the Conservatives on Brighton and Hove City Council, has been chosen for a senior role on the Local Government Association (LGA). He was selected by his peers to be member of the LGA’s new Environment, Economy, Housing and Transport Board. Cllr Theobald said: “The LGA does have the ear of government ministers, and so this lobbying work is very important in improving the lives of the city’s residents.”

An endurance athlete will run round Preston Park Velodrome for 24 hours barefoot to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Joe Addison has been raising money for the charity since his father Roy – also a supporter of Macmillan - died from cancer in 2010. His latest effort will take place on September 6 and 7 – starting at 1pm on the 6th. He hopes to run four marathons round the 579 metre circular track. Mr Addison can be sponsored online at: www.justgiving.com/ joeaddison2014/.
“Many are celebrating excellent personal academic achievements at all levels. “I would also like to thank staff and parents who have worked incredibly hard.” At Hove Park School, the benchmark figure was 62% down on last year’s 65%. Derek Trimmer, the headteacher, said: “Students have improved their performance across the board at Hove Park School. “Student progress has made huge leaps forward, with pupil premium and gifted and talented students the most successful. “In English and maths the number of students making three levels of progress during their time at secondary school – probably the fairest way to measure a school’s effectiveness – has risen to 12 percentage points above the national average in English and just above the national average in maths.” At Cardinal Newman Catholic School, 61% of students achieved five good GCSEs, compared with 73% last year. At Blatchington Mill School, the benchmark figure was 59%, compared with 72% last year. Janet Felkin, the headteacher, said: “The school results are very different to usual due to changes in the way that schools are measured. “The turbulence caused by sweeping changes to government league tables affected the headline figures for the school but crucially made no difference to the students or their grades. “Our staff and students have worked extremely hard to achieve these wonderful grades. These students have achieved more top grades than ever before. We knew the changes to league tables this year would not allow us to compare favourably to last year but, considering student success individually, demonstrates a very positive picture indeed.” The Portslade Aldridge
Community Academy (PACA) reported that 53% of pupils achieved five good GCSEs, down from 60%. James Fox, the principal, said “I am extremely proud of both our students and teaching staff, who have worked hard this year to keep up the improvement in academic standards that we have made at the academy. “After being named in the top 10 improved schools in the country in 2013 due to a 21% rise in GCSE results, with 60% students gaining 5 A*-C grades including English and Maths in 2013 up from 39% in 2012, this year’s results show last year’s achievement was far from a one off. At Longhill High School, the headline result dropped just one percentage point to 49%, from 50% last year. At Patcham High School, 49% of pupils managed five good GCSEs, down from 55% last year. At Brighton Aldridge Community Academy, 48% of pupils achieved five good GCSEs - up from 46% last year. At Varndean School, the figure this year was also 48%. William Deighan, the headteacher, said: “We will analyse the variations that have happened nationally to discover the reasons for this.” Brighton and Hove High School said that its girls were “celebrating outstanding success at GCSE with 58% of all results at A* or A grades and a pass rate of 97%A* to C”. Jennifer Smith, the headteacher, said: “The governors and I are delighted with our girls’ success. They have worked tremendously hard and it is well-deserved.”

University contributing £700 million to economy A report estimates Brighton University contributes close to £700 million a year to the city’s economy and supports more than 7,000 jobs. The research shows that the economic impact of the university has skyrocketed by more than £100 million since the last report into its financial boost was carried out in 2008. The number of jobs has also risen, by 1,000. The research, commissioned by the university, was carried
out by independent consultants specialising in the economic impact of higher education. And Julian Crampton, the university’s vice-chancellor, said it showed the importance of the university to Brighton and the wider Sussex area. He said: “The findings confirm the university as one of the biggest employers in the region and highlight its importance to the local economy. “In these economically challenging times it is crucial to show how
important the University of Brighton is, locally, regionally and nationally. “Student spending alone is significant and we are seeing a growing number of international students coming here, while the number of visitors attracted to the city because of the student population is also increasing. “All this has a positive impact on local businesses and services.” The news comes on the back of a successful period for the university. The consultants concentrated on
the academic year 2012-13 when the university had 21,334 students. Of those, 10,881 came from the southeast, 7,453 from other parts of Britain and 3,000 of them from abroad. In Brighton and Hove, the university and its students’ expenditure generated £483 million of output and more than 4,900 jobs, equivalent to nearly four per cent of all employees in the city. And it was an equally-encouraging story at the university’s Eastbourne and Hastings campuses. Around £27 million of output and more than 280 full-time equivalent jobs were generated in Hastings, nearly one per cent of all jobs in the East Sussex town. In Eastbourne the figures were £96 million and 1,060 jobs, or 2.8 per cent of jobs. Overall, the university and students’ expenditure generated 7,085 jobs and £698 million of output in the southeast region. Besides direct expenditure for goods and services, the report found that the university’s activities create a knock-on effect in the economy, with suppliers making purchases to supply the university and employees spending their salaries on housing and living. The independent consultants calculated that every £1 million of university revenue generated a secondary output of £1.15 million in the region and a further £180,000 in the rest of the country.
Nearly half of jobs generated were direct university positions, with 46% in the region and five per cent in the rest of the country. Academics, including lecturers and researchers, accounted for the largest proportion of university jobs but there was a wide variety of other posts, including administrators, skilled trades’ workers and managers. Indirect jobs supported were mainly in manufacturing, wholesale, retail business, hotels and construction. The university now plans to push ahead with ambitious proposals to increase its student capacity and standard of its facilities. Professor Crampton said: “We have exciting plans for the future, including a £150 million redevelopment of the former Preston Barracks site in Brighton and a £10 million student accommodation building in Hastings. “As with all of our projects, we work closely with local authorities, businesses and local organisations. “This ensures that our growth is compatible with the aims and needs of the communities.” A similar report into Sussex University, published in November last year by Oxford Economics, estimated the university contributed £600 million to the economy – with more than two-thirds of it going into the local economy. And, like Brighton, Sussex University has also announced multi-million pound expansion plans.

Get booking: An Italian break for book-lovers Laura Lockington @bookloversupper We all love Italy. The food, the wine, the culture, the stylish people, the laid-back, let’s-all-have-lunch quality of life. At The Bookish Supper Society, we loved it so much that we decided to take Bookish out there. We are going in April 2015 in the company of Sally O’Reilly the Brighton author who wrote the absorbing and wonderful novel Dark Aemilia. Sally was inspired by her trip to Venice to write about the birthplace of Aemilia’s parents, musicians at the court of Elizabeth I, who lived in the old Jewish ghetto of that most fabulous of floating cities. So, we rolled up our sleeves and set out to find the most amazing deals that we could. And, my goodness, we worked hard. We sampled wine, tasted food, visited hotels and restaurants and came up with a package for the most discerning of visitors. It helps, of course, that the area known as "Little Tuscany" is rich in historic buildings, jawdropping views, fabulous food, and glorious wine. A Bookish long weekend, what could be nicer? We have booked a
small, stylish hotel in the sleepy town of Bragnaza. The hotel is owned and run by the lovely Renata, who is very excited by having some English book-lovers staying with her. A must, as far as I was concerned, was a visit to one of the many small vineyards that make up the beautiful countryside. We have chosen one that is passionate about its wine, and is surrounded by wild cherry trees and the most adorable goats I have ever seen. The restaurants we have selected are, justly, famous in the area with local specialities such as wild nettle pasta with rabbit and bitter olives, and foraged greens served with lemon, garlic and olive oil. It will be asparagus season when we are there and the asparagus lasagne is something that dreams are made of. Then there is the Palladian Villa that we have reserved for the celebration dinner on the Saturday night. I had to pinch myself, because it felt as I was on a film set. It is the first Palladian-style villa that was built in Italy and is privately owned by a count, who lives on the premises. Drifting around the gardens with a glass of prosecco in hand, is an experience I highly recommend. On the Sunday, we will be spending the day in Venice, the pearl of the Adriatic, with author Sally to see where her inspiration came from,
taking in St Mark's Square (the living room of Europe), the canals, and the bridges - and ending up in a typical Venetian bar for lunch. We will jump on a water bus to get back to the airport and say ciao to Italy. For this time. For more information visit: www. bookishsuppersociety.wordpress. com. The cost - exclusive of flights - is £425 per person, based on two people sharing a room. A second trip - to Lucca in Italy - is planned for the autumn of 2015.

The Flavour Thesaurus by Niki Segnit This was a birthday present to me and I have treasured it. If you know anyone who’s a foodie - and Brighton is full of them - I heartily recommend this book. Witty, wise, and useful it’s not so much a cookbook, more a compendium of flavours. Of course, there are the obvious ones, like apple and blackberry (described here as the Simon and Garfunkel of flavour marriages) and strawberries and cream, or the ubiquitous pork and apple. We all know these. But there are some crackers in this book that make peering in the depths of the fridge an adventure. The book is arranged alphabetically with wonderful anecdotes and recipes interspersed with some pretty
amazing food combinations. I loved the story of lunch in Venice, where onions and anchovies are the star turn - or raw cauliflower and dates, discovered in a cafe in Jerusalem. I glossed over the chapter devoted to cinnamon (shudder), but was totally entranced by the chapter on watermelons (nothing nicer in the heat) and can vouch for the watermelon salad with feta cheese. But I also want to try the sweet pink melon with rosemary, or oysters, or crisply-fried pork belly. It all sounds scrumptious and certainly not something I would have put together. Then you have the unusual combination of asparagus and orange. Unlikely? It seems not. Apparently sauce maltaise (a hollandaise flavoured with blood oranges was invented specifically for it). Who knew? We do now.

Pavements are for pedestrians – not for selfish cyclists who flout the law Mike Holland @RealMikeHolland
We can all cite examples of laws that are seen as discriminatory or unfair. There are, however, some laws that are in place to protect people from dangerous situations. It goes without saying that only a complete fool will regularly flout these laws on a regular basis and, in effect, dice with death for absolutely no gain or real purpose. There is a large group of people in our city who are prepared to do just that. These people are prepared to travel round on flimsy things called bicycles and many - but not all, I hasten to add - can be seen on our roads and footpaths at night travelling without lights or luminous clothing. I am not going to describe them in the usual cliché of "the small minority" in our city. I am sorry
and we pay to have our streets policed. Which gives us a right to point out to the police that clearly they are not doing their job. I am sure there would be a whole list of excuses: lack of manpower, weak council, unworkable laws, etc, etc, etc... Well, if that's the case, the law needs changing to allow people to ride around on pavements, often at night without lights, and to constantly jump traffic signals. Of course, this is a law that would never be changed because it would be deemed too dangerous by The law clearly states: the courts. Please, ‘At night, your cycle must however, don't have white front and red continue letting us believe that little book rear lights lit'" laughingly called the Highway Code I don't care what excuse the is anything other than science police want to use for seemingly fiction - because we simply will turning a blind eye to this not believe you. This is not an anti-cycling rant dangerous and inconsiderate loutish behaviour. As I and most either, dear cyclists. I couldn't other residents see it, these really care whether any of you morons are breaking the law wear helmets and I care even to say they are numerous, if not the majority. The law clearly states: "At night, your cycle must have white front and red rear lights lit". The law also states: "You must not cycle on a pavement". And: "You must not cross the stop line when the traffic lights are red". All very clear, as far as the rest of society is concerned. So how can it be possible that so many people in our city blatantly flout the law on a daily basis and get away with it.
Cyclists should dismount and walk when using the pavement
less if you spend your entire life in cycle lanes, particularly in the rain. What I do care about is that, while the rest of us are expected to abide by something called the law, many of you are simply thumbing your nose at society. Continually, blatantly breaking the law and seemingly getting away with it. It's high time something is done to remedy this nonsense We - the rest of society - do
not care if a cycle lane is closed either, because that is no excuse to ride on the pavement. Get off and walk like the rest of us, not mount the pavement and expect pedestrians to get out of your way. In fact, try walking like the rest of us anyway. Who knows you might like it and, environmentally, it is even more eco-friendly than your bicycle. Save the planet and get on your feet.
It is high time something was done about anti-social cyclists

Work until November
Rat in kebab shop
City champions success
Work on Brighton seafront to repair the road following the partial collapse of the Fortune of War arches will now continue until November. The road has been partly closed at the bottom of West Street since April 25 when the hole first appeared. It was originally hoped that work would be completed and the road reopened within eight weeks but Brighton and Hove City Council has announced a delay after further investigations revealed damage to more than one arch.
A kebab shop was given the lowest hygiene rating possible rating by the council after an inspection uncovered a rat infestation. Kebab Nite in London Road was given a score of zero (out of a possible five) following the July visit. The takeaway’s manager, however, is adamant the shop is now rat-free. Hasan Ilhan said: “I hired exterminators and they caught two rats. After that the problems stopped. “The inspector came back and checked and she’s very happy.”
Volunteer city champions have handed out advice and information to more than 5,000 visitors since taking to the city’s streets at Easter. Modelled on the hugely-popular games makers who worked during the London 2012 Olympics, the Brighton and Hove City Champions are a small, but dedicated team of volunteers who are on duty every weekend. They provide a mobile information service, making sure visitors get the most out of their trip to the city.

Conversations Puzzled and saddened, because Gazans are the pawns of Hamas I am puzzled by Tony Greenstein (page 8, August 15). Saddened, too. But mostly puzzled because I cannot recognise in what he is saying much, if anything, that tallies with my own understanding. I won't comment on his general tone, which I find intemperate, but I must challenge some specifics. He refers to “the attack on the people of Gaza”. Israel has no interest in attacking Gazans. If Gazans had the sense to oust Hamas and install a Fatah administration, they could enjoy the same relative peace and prosperity enjoyed in the West Bank. But as long as they allow themselves to be used as pawns by Hamas, they must, sadly, pay a price for that. And what can the reason possibly be for Mr Greenstein's use of quotation marks when he refers to “rockets” and “selfdefence”? Quotation marks are used to denote the word does not really mean what it says. Is he saying what Hamas is firing are not rockets? Pseudo-rockets
perhaps? The real reason for the quotation marks is to imply that Israel is making it up. Why would anyone suggest the rockets are not rockets? “Worthy of Goebbels”? Really? Why does Mr Greenstein need to claim moral equivalence between Nazi Germany and Israel? It is repugnant, it is puerile, but it is, above all, cowardly - the last resort of a man who has no argument. So Israel “manufactures” Nasser, the PLO and Hizbollah. Really? I am flummoxed by this assertion. What does it mean? Does it mean anything? And now, let's look at “the obscene use of the holocaust as a propaganda weapon”. I find no reference in the IsraeliPalestinian narrative to the Holocaust, other than when it is quoted by the Palestinians and their friends and useful idiots. Selectively quoting Ben Gurion out of context wouldn't even get Mr Greenstein a pass in GCSE History. Robert Brynin

Frightening and fascistic
A + A
I read Mike Holland's article (page 11, August 15) that all dogs should be banned from green spaces immediately in our over-crowded city. I find this article frightening and fascistic. Firstly, St Anne's Wells Garden in Hove was donated for the people of Hove to walk their dogs in. Children can go play in the fenced off designated area. People can eat their food at the tables provided and sit on benches. Secondly, many other animals will also be urinating and leaving excrement on the ground where he may be eating his sandwhiches off. Personally, I have never heard of a child getting ill from dog feaces. It may occur, but it is not an endemic problem.

Gloria De Piero and Jon Ashworth, both Labour MPs, joined the party’s so-called Seaside Express to try and convince locals to sign up as Labour members. They were joined by local hopefuls Nancy Platts, Purna Sen and Peter Kyle. Brighton and Hove’s parliamentary seats are seen as potentially crucial to the outcome of next year’s general election.

Nursing home fire
A pair of hospital wards were closed after an outbreak of a winter vomiting bug. Patients on Chichester and Vallance wards were affected by the Norovirus infection as well as the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), all at Royal Sussex County Hospital in Kemptown. The AMU is where staff assess patients admitted to A&E while Chichester and Vallance are in the oldest part of the hospital which is due to be demolished as part of modernisation plans.
Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) has appointed a leading cancer specialist as its new dean. The experienced Malcolm Reed will join later this year from Sheffield University where he is currently head of the oncology department. He replaces Jon Cohen, founding dean, who stepped down from the job last December. Michael Farthing, Sussex University vice-chancellor, said: “We are delighted that Malcolm has agreed to lead the further development of BSMS.”
Firefighters were called to a nursing home when a tumble dryer caught fire. Crews from both Preston Circus and Hove were called to the blaze at Hazelgrove Nursing Home at Heath Hill Lodge, Heath Hill Avenue, in Bevendean at around 10.30pm on Sunday night. The home looks after 37 people but a spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said there were no injuries. They also confirmed the fire at the home was accidental.

Whitehawk sign Sol Whitehawk FC fans were given a shock this week when the club’s website carried a story under the headline: Sol Campbell joins The Hawks! The England international bumped into Jim Collins, the Whitehawk chairman, who took the opportunity to make the giant defender the offer.

Cut tourism tax
Talking statue calls
Marathon places
Brighton and Hove’s Tourism Advisory Board (TAB) has unanimously agreed to support a campaign calling for the government to cut tourism VAT.The TAB is backing attempts to lobby politicians to reduce the rate from 20% to 5% and is asking the city’s three MPs to sign an early day motion covering the issue so it can be debated in Westminster. The TAB is composed of 25 members from local tourism-related businesses, and three locally elected crossparty councillors.
Brighton and Hove City Council is being asked to follow London’s lead and introduce new talking statue technology to some of the city’s historic icons. In London, actors have been commissioned to put words into the mouths of public statues. These recordings are then activated by a smartphone and the owner receives an immediate call from the statue in question, be it Sherlock Holmes or Dick Whittington’s cat. Conservative councillors want to see similar in Brighton and Hove.
Chestnut Tree House has places available for next year’s Brighton Marathon. Entry to the race has closed for public entries but the charity is hoping to recruit 300 runners – one for every child the charity currently cares for - to take part and raise funds for what is the only children’s hospice in Sussex. The charity also wants to hear from anyone who has a place but wants to raise money for Chestnut Tree House. More information is online at: www.chestnut-tree-house.org. uk/brightonmarathon.

New AITC website Brighton and Hove Albion stars Jake Forster-Caskey and Craig Mackail-Smith took time out from their busy training schedule to help launch a new website for the club’s charity, Albion in the Community (AITC). AITC runs 60 projects across Sussex, working with more than 50,000 people each year. Now the people behind the charity hope AITC can reach even more people through its new website, www.albioninthecommunity.org. uk, which features a dedicated online booking system for all of AITC’s football and sports courses. Visitors to the site will also be
able to find out more about AITC’s fundraising events and how to help support the charity’s work. The new site is part of a wider re-branding of the charity and follows the launch of a new logo earlier this year. It will also help support an increased focus on AITC’s fundraising initiatives, which this year aim to double the number of people taking part in the charity’s disability sports programme. Michael Edwards, AITC chief executive, said: “The new website has been an integral part of our wider plans to improve
communications with all of our stakeholders. “It will be a great showcase for all the work we do across Sussex with daily news stories and videos highlighting the impact of our projects. “For the first time people will also be able to book online for our football and sports courses which will hopefully increase the number of young people taking part in them.” Bookings are currently being taken for AITC football and sports courses in September and October.
See www.brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk for an interview with Inigo Calderon, the Albion star who has become a poster boy for AITC.

proper distance from the shore, and then plunge into the sea, the guides attending on each side to assist them in recovering the machine; which being accomplished they are drawn back to shore.” The two most famous of these “dippers” were John “Smoaker” Miles and Martha Gunn, both of them legendary locals. “Old Smoaker” was once in attendance on the Prince of Wales when the latter ventured out
Sea-bathing is now so familiar a sight that it is hard to imagine a time when that was not so. Yet until the 1750s it was practically unknown, and even when Dr Richard Russell began to preach its benefits, it was with regard to its medicinal properties rather than as a pleasurable activity in its own right. It was he, before the advent of the Prince Regent, who first put Brighton on the fashionable map, as an ideal place to take the briny invigorating waters. It was for long regarded as such a novelty, that the guide books helpfully explained what was involved. “By means Martha Gunn of a hook ladder,” the John Smoaker Miles Brighton New Guide of 1800 informed its readers, “the further than was wise, ignoring his bather ascends the machine, which attendant’s warnings. So Smoaker is formed of wood, and raised on unceremoniously seized him by the high wheels. They are drawn to a ear and hauled him back towards
the shore. “I ar’n’t agoen’ to let the king hang me for lettin’ the Prince of Wales drown hisself; not I, to please nobody, I can tell’e,” he remonstrated when they came ashore. And Prinny evidently managed to see the funny side, for he later appointed Miles as Royal Bather, and established the Smoaker Stakes, first run at the Brighton races in 1806, in his memory. Prinny was also fond of Martha, the ladies’ attendant (ladies bathed between West Street and Middle Street). He often sent for her at the Pavilion, where he enjoyed her quaint conversation. On one occasion, spotting her putting a pound of butter in her pocket, the prince kept her talking while luring her ever closer to the kitchen fire. In 1780, when it was advertised that “five strong women, all used to the sea, have completely fitted up a set of new machines with a careful man and horse to conduct them in and out of the water, for the purpose of bathing ladies and

children, the ladies at one shilling each, and children sixpence”, Martha and seven others - “the old bathers for the last 30 years” - responded with a vigorous advert of their own, and maybe saw off the newcomers. She was still going strong in 1805, a newspaper punning: “Many of our lovely belles took ‘ducks’ for breakfast this morning, purchased of their cateress, Martha Gunn, who boasts that from the profits she gains by the sale of her ‘ducks’ she is often enabled to purchase a goose for dinner.” In 1815, now 88, hobbling and toothless, she was still on the beach each morning to supervise the bathing, and confessed: “I ought to
be proud, for I’ve as many bows from man, woman, and child, as the Prince hisself; aye, I do believe, the very dogs in the town know me.” The machines were few, and customers would scuffle to secure one. “Some send their footmen, and contend by proxy; others go in boats or on horseback, to meet the machines.” Not everyone bothered. Fanny Burney and Mrs Thrale, with the three Miss Thrales, all rose at six on a November morning in 1782, “and by the pale blink of the moon into the ocean we plunged”. Graham Chainey is a freelance writer living in Brighton and Hove.

Business Lifetime Achievement nomination
Eric de Chalon is up for an award
A funeral director is in line to win a prestigious industry award. Eric de Chalon, of Bungard Funeral Directors in Sackville Road in Hove, has been selected from hundreds of nominees across the country to go through to the final stages at this year’s Good Funeral Awards. The ceremony is being held at the Beeches in Bournville on Sunday, October 6, and Mr de Chalon is a finalist in the coveted Lifetime Achievement in the Funeral Industry Award category. Charles Cowling, chief judge, was
full of praise for Mr de Chalon. He said: “The Good Funeral Awards reward exceptional service to the bereaved. “By progressing this far, Eric from Bungard Funeral Directors has already demonstrated outstanding professionalism, empathy and a willingness to go the extra mile.” The Good Funeral Awards are wholly independent of the funeral industry and are supported by consumer advocates the Good Funeral Guide and the Natural Death Centre. Brian Jenner, the event organiser, said: “The Good Funeral Awards recognise all those unsung heroes who work so hard for the bereaved and whose role can so easily be overlooked. “Some of the nicest people in Britain work in the funerals business.” The Good Funeral Awards dinner is part of the first Ideal Death Show weekend.

Southern Water meters scheme success
King Alfred launches Armageddon with free taster sessions
Southern Water’s programme to install nearly 500,000 meters across Sussex, Kent and Hampshire is nearing completion. The five-year programme, which began in 2010, is helping thousands of households across the southeast save water, energy and money. More than 35,000 households in Brighton and Hove have had a water meter installed and, so far, 60% are saving an average of £15 a month on their water bill. Southern Water is installing water meters as part of a 25-year plan to help secure future water resources because households on a meter tend to use 10-18 per cent less water. Moreover, it is considered to be the fairest way to charge as customers only pay for what they use. Although the majority of metered households are enjoying a reduction in their water bills, Southern Water has introduced new tariffs and, for those in financial hardship, partnered with environmental charity, Groundwork. Since 2010, Groundwork’s green doctors, who fit free water efficiency devices and give advice
on using water wisely, have visited nearly 40,000 homes across the southeast. These visits have resulted in 166,000 water-saving products being distributed - saving households, on average, 112 litres of water a day. Darren Bentham, Southern Water’s chief customer officer, said: “If we need to gain access to a customer’s property we will contact them directly about booking an appointment. “I would stress that everyone working on Southern Water’s metering programme carries identification and customers should always ask to see this before allowing anyone into their home. If customers are suspicious they should telephone Southern Water on 0845 278 0845 to confirm the employee’s identity.” For more information about Southern Water’s metering programme visit: www.yourwatermeter.co.uk or call the metering call centre on 0333 2003 014.

Brighton and Hove is fastestablishing itself as a hub for new digital technology but new laws being introduced in January could see many businesses hit by tax increases. A new set of rules will be enforced from January 1 where the customer is an individual, meaning VAT based on the place of supply of telecommunications, broadcasting services and e-services will be chargeable based on where the customer belongs rather than where the supplier is based. As a result, liability to account for any VAT due in one of the 28 EU member states rests entirely with the supplier. Russell New, a Sussex-based tax adviser firm, is therefore warning businesses to try and reduce the risk of heavier VAT bills next year. Vince McLoughlin, partner at Russell New, said: “This is another piece of legislation aimed primarily at large businesses but having a greater impact on smaller businesses which do not have the administrative back up that the multi-national firms do.”

This week's must-see Celebrating 50 Years of Mod Culture Brighton Centre Saturday, 6pm. Brighton is as synonymous with the mod movement as it is with fish and chips and sticks of rock. Whether through the bank holiday battles on the beach of the 1960s or the popular revivalist scene of the early 1980s, Brighton has been at the forefront of modernism. And to celebrate five decades of mod, the Brighton Centre is playing host to a number of the most-popular revivalist acts. Celebrating 50 Years of Mod Culture, which gets underway tomorrow (Saturday) at 6pm, is headlined by From The Jam, a group headed by Bruce Foxton who made up one third of The Jam’s line-up. Foxton’s presence gives From The Jam more authenticity and credibility than the usual tribute acts. They will be performing an array of the band’s greatest hits but not until after sets from B&H Independent-0808:Layout 1
The Jam contemporaries The Chords (on stage at 7.15pm), The Truth (8.05pm) and Secret Affair (9.25pm). There will also be turns from a number of top mod DJs with From The Jam due on stage at 10.45pm and the show finishing at midnight. Tickets (£25.50) are available now online from: www.brightoncentre.co.uk or by calling: 0844 847 1515.

Way, from Milngavie to the South Downs, Clare has walked through apocalyptic thunderstorms, stripped off in bus stops, battled with blisters, and traipsed through snow-capped mountains with no voice. Most importantly, walking has let her discover not just the land and the seasons, but her family, her friends, her beloved dog Archie, and ultimately, herself.

the city is our office Bonett’s
Letting agents’ commission Over the last couple of years, there has been a lot of negative press about letting agents’ charges to tenants being excessive and cases of agents double charging; such as taking a fee from the landlord for a contract…and charging the tenant too! As they say, there’s more than one way to skin a cat! Today, the industry press opened what could be another can of worms. But this time it’s where letting agents are taking landlords for a ride. It seems that some letting agents routinely add commission to charges for repairs and
renewals at properties to landlords, in addition to the normal commission they take as their monthly management fee. According to the article, if agents are doing this, they must inform the landlord but do not have to advise the amount each time. Of course, there will be times where an agent has to oversee a large amount of work at a property, over and above normal repairs and monthly rent transfers. In these cases, it would seem sensible to discuss and agree a fee with the landlord for the
extra work. It is actually surprising that the amount of commission added to invoices does not have to be divulged as it is surely a moveable feast. In time, one would imagine that rules will be tightened up to deal with this anomaly. In the meantime, as a landlord, when you are being invoiced for work by your letting agent, ensure you are aware of the costs and any add-ons. The article advises that if a letting agent has been taking such a commission without first informing you in their terms and conditions, you can reclaim the total amount of those extra fees… It’s only fair to you. The places I eat
The Set sets its stall out to surprise and delight Claire Beveridge @placesieatbtn
Ahead of their pop up at Curry Leaf Cafe on Tuesday (August 26), we caught up with Semone Bonner, one third of The Set (www. thesetpopup.com) - a new pop-up collaboration between Semone, Danny Kenny, of the Gingerman Group, and Ali Bell, from Cocktail Shack. Tell us about how the idea for The Set came about? We were looking to expand our creative capabilities and deliver food without boundaries. Cooking in restaurants means we create food and experiences that already have expectations affiliated with the venue. A customer has come to experience the restaurant’s food and a high percentage are returning guests already excited about eating “Modern British” or “Classic French” cuisine and that’s where we got thinking: Why not create an experience that surprises our guests? They don’t know what to expect and, in some cases, won’t even receive plates for certain courses. Let’s tear up those boundaries of eating out and really make something to be remembered.
Coffee Chronicles Skinny latte is fun to say. Perhaps that’s why we hear it so often. Skimmed milk, red top, skim or skinny - it’s all the same thing. It’s whole milk, but with the cream removed, thus creating a lowercalorie option.
The Set aims at tearing up boundaries and offering something truly memorable
How do you both know each other and what are your backgrounds? Danny and I met working together at The Gingerman restaurant in Brighton and got on so well instantly, we started pushing each other on creativelys and professionally, while maintaining a level of playful jibes and banter. We knew we were going to work well together for a long time and we still text each other daily (both working in different restaurants now) about ideas and general childish abuse. Both our backgrounds have been spent in fine-dining restaurants and experiencing world cuisine [Semone in Europe, cooking in France and Greece, and Danny having lived in Vietnam and eating his way through Asia.] What sets The Set apart from other pop ups across the city? We are not doing this to get rich. We really want to excite people
by @LittleCoffeeCo It’s not a failsafe diet option though. Prefixing “large mocha with hazelnut syrup and whipped cream” with “skinny” really doesn’t count. The milk renaissance calls into question the actual benefits of a calorie controlled diet.
Parenting
together by the theme of the event and the venue specifics. We push each other to create wonderful and innovative ideas and already have ideas pencilled in for future events, because its hard to not get carried away when you don’t have boundaries.
and leave people asking “How do they do that?” Our events are not just a dinner out, but an exciting and different experience every time. Whether it be plating directly on the table or inside a sealed chocolate “ball”, our food is interactive and we are very much a presence in the dining space. What sets us apart is we want the guests to have fun, smile and laugh and really understand what we are about; it’s not just about the head-scratching food or interactive drinks involving toffee hammers and smoke; it’s the entire night that will be remembered.
Why are pop-ups important to you? We have plans for the future with The Set. It’s not just a fun hobby. We are here to stay and the popups give us an opportunity to be creative with the company and with the most genuine critics: our guests. We want to turn this into an exciting brand that people look out for and “popping up” across the city gives us the creative outlet to deliver a different experience from venue to venue.
Do you feel working as a trio ensures a higher quality of food? Yes, very much so. Our creative meetings are bizarre and exciting. With Ali creating the drinks components to our events, with me and Dan working on the food. But it’s all very much tied
If you had to sum up The Set in three words, what would they be? Fun, memorable and interactive.
Some schools of thought state that your body will seek the missing calories (of which it’s been deprived by you ordering your skinny cappuccino) elsewhere. Perhaps in one of those brownies which we put as near as humanly possible to the point of sale. There’s also a bit of historical knowledge that the skinny milk brigade really should know. Back in the day, we used it to supplement pigs’ pellet feed diet. Given that we humans generally
only feed farm animals the minimum food required to fatten them up ready for slaughter, it makes you wonder why skimmed milk played such a major part in their diet. At our place, we’ll happily make you a skinny latte, skinny cappuccino or anything else you want to say after “skinny”. We’ll also happily plate up one of those brownies. Anyone with a toddler could be forgiven for thinking that they have a bright future in the world of comedy. In reality, I respectfully suggest, it seems to be the receptive audience rather than the material that explains the success parents and others have when trying to amuse someone aged three or under. Pretend to sneeze in front of a toddler and you’re sure to induce hysterics. An over-the-top style is recommended for maximum laughs and repetition only seems to heighten the hysteria, in our household anyway. If you can create a big buildup, so much the better. Try this with a more mature audience and it’s unlikely you’ll get more than a quizzical look or perhaps even a “bless you”, if you’re not hamming it up enough. Or how about selecting a song from the radio and singing it back to your toddler, putting your own unique stamp on it in the process? I’ve found elongating vowel sounds works well as does accompanying the song with an energetic dance. Your toddler is bound to have a good giggle at this and may even join in. Granted, this particular piece of comedy is one that might also produce a smile or laugh from a more cynical audience, but they’ll be laughing at you rather than with you. On second thoughts, perhaps that’s no different from the toddler’s reaction. Just a look can be enough though - a sudden, steady stare in their direction coupled with a slightly manic smile and you can sit back and bask in their amusement. Once again, this is unlikely to go down too well with an audience more advanced in years, especially if you don’t already know them. Of course, as any good toddlers’ comedian knows, if it’s easy to make them laugh, it’s regrettably even easier to make them cry!

Travel Take your car and get the best out of France the road signs too. A great free tool to help you plot your route if you’re not excel savvy is www. multiplottr.com.
Emma Prentice @BrightonIndy I have just returned from my first road-trip abroad and it’s an experience I would highly recommend. In one week I covered a diverse range of towns across the North of France which is, for reasons that I don’t fully understand, one of the least popular regions for tourists. My trip also included a spontaneous visit to Paris and ended with a two-day stop across the border in Bruges. Even better, with the vast amount of helpful information readily available online, minimal planning was needed. Better still, given that the Pays du Nord is only a short cross-channel journey from home, Brightonians are only three or four hours away. Why Drive? ■ You have a lot of freedom, and can go anywhere you desire; parking in the North of France is far less restricted - especially in comparison to Brighton. In the small towns parking is usually free, and there are many spaces, even in the larger towns parking is relatively cheap; ■ Having a vehicle means you don’t have to lug everything around with you either; ■ With GPS available on many devices, getting to destinations is easy - just remember to follow
For the first four days of the roadtrip I stayed at a campsite in Saint Omer, after some research this seemed like a fairly central point to some of the places we had picked out to visit during the week, by staying at one campsite meant the tent would need to be pitched once too. Why camp? ■ The French are big on camping there are over 2,000 sites in the country, with great facilities and leisure activities; ■ A useful website www. frenchcampsites.co/frenchregions/region-informationnorthern-france, and www. tripadvisor.com is another great place to go to for recommendations; ■ If you’re on a budget cut costs when you can, rather than stopping off at a bed and breakfast each night, campsites are far cheaper. Shortly after arriving at the campsite in France, I realised we had reserved a plot for four days rather than five, meaning there was a spare night before heading to Bruges. Instead of immediately booking another night up, the spontaneous idea of going to Paris popped up. Yes, you could visit for a week and still have stuff left over to do, but

Here are two great natural brands with new products for the autumn. Liz Earle has had another breakthrough in botanical brilliance called Superskin Moisturiser to combat trans-epidermal moisture loss and improve barrier function. Look up #slowtheticking on Twitter to see some launch photographs with ethnobotanist James Wong and Liz herself. The new Superskin ingredients smell divine: neroli, chamomile, and lavandin mix in with the original plant formulations of cranberry, borage, and organic rosehip oils. The pomegranate flower extract
has collagen-protecting flavonoid properties - and the actives are rich in GLA, omega-3, and antioxidants to plump, moisturise and smooth dryer, more mature skins. I really enjoyed the consistency of this luxurious cream; it is powerful, yet you can still blend it under makeup in the mornings while you inhale the scent and let it settle: £39 for 50ml and £14.50 for 15ml from next month in selected John Lewis and Boots stores or at www.lizearle.com. My second tip is a transforming REN treatment to instantly revitalise and
Outside the Palais des beaux-arts (Lille) in a day you could still get a lot of sight-seeing done, and due to the short-distance drive from home, you can always go back another time and do the rest. Using a website such as www. trivago.com you can even book a hotel there and then. After reading some reviews it was advised to not drive in the city, and on my arrival as a pedestrian you could see why - most people agree it is easiest to stay a little further out and then metro in. Make sure to pack some good walking shoes too, just in case you end up walking a lot further than initially planned. I forgot this key factor and my feet were killing me by the end of the afternoon.
rejuvenate the skin. Flash Rinse 1 Minute Facial (with water-activated Vitamin C) will be nationally available next month. REN’s philosophy of clean skin care is based on performance, purity, and pleasure. Their groundbreaking formulations use the latest hi-tech actives, with rigorous product testing to achieve clinicallyproven results. REN use only 100% plant and mineral-derived actives (free from synthetic ingredients). I was dubious if Flash Rinse would work in just 60 seconds, but I enjoy being proved wrong; Elle magazine says Flash Rinse is the best skincare innovation of the year. I used it on Monday
I arrived in France on a Monday; it is definitely worth knowing in advance if you plan on visiting a small province town on this particular day that most attractions and shops apart from supermarkets and some restaurants, will be closed, as Monday is a rest day for many people. I learnt this the hard way walking through the quaint streets of Cassel, an ideal place to stop for lunch, was like walking through a ghost-town - completely empty. It is also worth noting that museums tend to be shut on Tuesdays, even in the major cities. Towards the start of the week the smaller towns seem to become livelier in the evening; on the Monday in Saint Omer there were
more people about and a lot of restaurants and pubs in the main square opened their doors, offering a wide variety of food from fine dining to fast-food. If there is one thing I have experienced this holiday it is the high quality food and the generous nature of the caterers. When ordering food at restaurants your drinks usually came with a small free snack, in Bruges when buying chocolate I got two small ones free. Even the cheap burger van I got some late night food from you could see that so much care was involved in the putting together of the burger - it tasted amazing. It just goes to show how much the little things are appreciated.
Search for #slowtheticking on Twitter evening after my holidays and was amazed at how different my face felt after the first go (wait three days between uses). The gel is applied to the face and massaged in for a few seconds. It lightly exfoliates, then you add water. The moisture immediately activates the gel to deliver an intense shot of potent Vitamin C to the skin. I had an instant glow with
a renewed, healthier radiance. The wash neutralises urban grey and reduces the signs of fatigue. I’ll probably use another blast on Thursday to kick off the weekend. Order online from renskincare.com or head over to Marks and Spencer in Western Road, or Space.NK in The Lanes to check it out locally: £32 for 75ml - and a little goes a long way.

One-day disappointment despite heroics from Wright
Richard Morris @BrightonIndy Sussex’s short-game season petered out this week as the county lost the last of their Royal London One-Day cup games to end the contest in eighth place in Group B. The BrightonandHoveJobs. com County Ground was awash with runs as the home side lost to Glamorgan by seven wickets under the Duckworth-Lewis system. Sussex scored an impressive 323-3 from a rain-shortened 48 overs but the visitors knockedoff an adjusted target of 329 with eight balls to spare. Star of the show was Jacques Rudolph who hit an unbeaten 169 to post Glamorgan’s highestever one-day score, beating Sir Viv Richards’ 12-year record of 162 against Oxfordshire. Rudolph’s awe-inspiring innings overshadowed another
highly-impress turn at the crease by Luke Wright. The swashbuckling Sussex star plundered 127 - his highest oneday score for the county It means Wright has now scored a century in his last innings in all three forms of the game – the Royal London One-Day Cup, the LV County Championship and the Natwest T20 Blast. He was far from alone in impressing in the middle. Harry Finch managed an unbeaten 92 from just 58 deliveries to help propel Sussex towards a decent total. Rudolph, however, saw to it that Glamorgan ended the victorious side, although neither team did enough to progress to the last eight of the competition. Wright ended the game with mixed feelings. The opener told BBC Sussex: “I am delighted with my own form - what you want to do is score as many runs as possible.
“Overall we have not been good enough this year in whiteball cricket and it has been disappointing. Someone needs to go on and get a big score - and throughout the tournament we haven’t quite had that. “Harry Finch’s knock was a special one. Even in T20 you can see how a player looks and he looks like he’s got something. “Some of the shots he played were special today - he’s got to now build on this. Fair play to him - he played some unbelievable shots and is certainly exciting for us next year.” Sussex’s short-form competitions are over for the season but the team has three LV County Championship matches to play. First up is Lancashire at Hove, starting on Tuesday morning at 10.30am. Tickets are still available online at: www.sussexcricket.co.uk or by calling 0844 264 0201.

Straight from the commentary box Well it didn’t take long did it? I know the season starts earlier than ever (next thing we know the first game will be in July) but to see the first change in manager on Day One was something I hadn’t expected. Big match preview: Brighton and Hove Albion vs Bolton Wanderers
Seagulls supporters are excited by new arrivals Richard Morris @BrightonIndy Brighton and Hove Albion fans will head to the Amex tomorrow eager to catch a glimpse of the two new signings who performed so admirably in Tuesday’s win at Leeds United. João Teixeira, the recentlyarrived season-long loan from Liverpool, inspired the Seagulls to their first league win under Sami Hyypiä – much to the relief of the Albion faithful. The lively attacking midfielder scored the Seagulls’ first league goal of the season after just five minutes at Elland Road and produced the sort of performance that will have flairhungry Albion fans salivating like Pavlovian dogs every time he picks up possession in attacking areas. And he was far from alone in impressing the 444 travelling Albion fans during what was an encouraging triumph. Danny Holla, another new arrival at the Amex, was in dominant form in the middle of the park and his strong work on and off the ball allowed Jake Forster-Caskey and Kemy Agustien enough freedom to produce the sort of performances which suggest that both are capable of becoming creative forces at this level. Both Teixeira and Holla should start for the Albion tomorrow (Saturday) against a Bolton team stuck in a wretched run of form. Andrew Crofts is available for selection following the threegame ban he suffered after his

The players were excellent and I’m very happy. “We showed what we can do and what we want to do, especially in the first-half. I like to play, I don’t know if it’s unusual as a defender to say that we want to play football. That’s how it is and hopefully in the next game we will keep it going for a bit longer. “We won the game tonight, but in all of these games I’ve been very happy with the attitude and mentality of this team. “Both Joao (Teixeira) and Danny (Holla) had good games. “Danny is a quality player on the ball. He brings the quality that maybe we are sometimes lacking and I think when he trains with us he will be fitter than he is at the moment.“

BRIGHTON RECOMMENDS PERSISTENT PERIL VS PAUL HAYES
300 SECONDS
DCONSTRUCT
NIMBUS
I’m really looking forward to Persistent Peril vs Paul Hayes: ‘Dark Ride’ 2014. The PP team are yet again making an excellent contribution to the BDF programme with a real-world miniature fantasy monorail ride which we’ll then be able to ride on via a 360° camera and virtual reality head set. What’s not to like?
Having worked in the digital sector in one capacity or another for over 20 years one thing that’s always bugged me is the lack of women speaking at industry events and conferences. So along came 300 Seconds - a series of lightning talks that acts as a platform for women to develop their confidence in public speaking and share their expertise.
Isn’t it great being told ace stories by extremely nice radical illustrious types? If you like a good TEDtalk and get really inspired hearing how others make ideas a reality, you’re gonna freak when you go to dConstruct. Let us all be educated by cool-geeky, funny, dedicated people causing a ruckus. Amen.
Human owl Chris Watson – of David Attenborough collusions, a weather sounds album named on the Guardian’s hear-before-you-die list, and 80s electro experimentalists Cabaret Voltaire – has perhaps the planet’s keenest ear for the natural world. Made with arts collective The Nimbus Group, his immersive sound app at Lighthouse promises exotic inspiration.

MINI MAKER FAIRE
Ben Miller Journalist, Culture24 @fragglemiller
Alongside the success of the Brighton Digital Festival has been the amazing rise of the Brighton Mini Maker Faire, justly one of the most popular events at every BDF. Last year an incredible 3,300 people of almost every age came through the doors of the Corn Exchange to take part in the celebration of creativity and invention. It’s back for 2014, of course, and there’ll be more makers and workshops than ever before. Daleks and other roving robots will be joined by members of the Star Wars Rebel Legion. There’ll be 3D printers and laser cutters, novel musical instruments and science experiments, but also technology from a pre-digital age, including weaving and woodwork. Try to find time to take part in a workshop – learn how to program your own robot, make felted jewellery, bind a book or solder a simple circuit. It is, as ever, free for kids, but any adults wanting to save 25% should pop to makerfairebrighton.com before hitting the Corn Exchange on Saturday 6th.
MAKE IT A DIGITAL DAY OUT! Light/Speed of Sound @ Fabrica Testbed 2013
Musical light shows are great (just ask any Pink Floyd fan), but how much more fun would they be if you were controlling them? Head over to the Unitarian Church after Mini Maker Faire on Saturday 6th (8pm) to take part in the spectacular Laser Light Synths – a music and light show that you control using bespoke touch-activated musical instruments filled with hundreds of high power LED lights. This new interactive extravaganza lets you become the band, turning the New Road church into a laser light spectacular. Laser Light Synths is the latest project from Seb Lee-Delisle, the local award-winning digital artist who drew crowds to Brighton during BDF 2013 with his PixelPyros digital fireworks display.

Brighton Digital Festival is a celebration of digital culture. It is organised by members of Brighton’s digital and arts communities.
BDF guide team Editor: James Kendall Sub Editor:
What happens as the borders between virtual realities and physical realities start to blur and fuse? Whether it’s the nebulous distinction between our online and offline selves, or the automated transformation of a virtual 3D object into a physical 3D printed one, our lives are paradoxically both complicated and simplified by the ever-increasing prevalence of digital culture. Brighton Digital Festival is now in its fourth year, and we’re thrilled that the festival continues to offer opportunities for exploration and reflection on the world we live in. This year we are delighted to have commissioned two projects to compliment the festival’s strong education strand and engage more young learners. In addition to our revived Grassroots Fund community awards, we’ve also commissioned six artworks from digital artists that will be shown publicly throughout the festival. They’ll show alongside the richly diverse programme of over a hundred independently organised events that happen across the four weeks of September.

Katrina Roberts, Vice President, American Express Technology talks about this year’s event: Why is American Express supporting the Brighton Digital festival? At American Express we’re excited to be premier sponsor for this year’s Brighton Digital Festival. With over 400 technology employees based in Brighton, it’s a great opportunity for us to continue to play an active part in the Brighton tech community, which is a well-known talent hub for the creative and digital industries.

FEEDBACK
I’m incredibly honoured that the community continues to engage with the festival; without the passion and commitment of literally hundreds of independent organisers who put together events, Brighton Digital Festival could not be the amazing celebration that it is. The on-going support and enthusiasm of the community means Brighton Digital Festival isn’t just a celebration of digital culture, it’s a celebration for the city itself.
American Express® is Premier Sponsor of Brighton Digital Festival 2014.

Tell us what you think of #BDF14: tweet us and fill out our audience survey to be entered into a super secret prize draw: brightondigitalfestival.co.uk/survey
American Express is better known within the financial services industry, but what has the company done in the technologies space? We are proud to be involved in exciting partnerships, for example, our relationship with Twitter has allowed Cardmembers to sync their card and tweet special #hashtags to buy American Express Gift Cards and products from a number of merchants. We have also partnered with Trip Advisor to enable Cardmembers to post and read reviews and unlock lists of Cardmember hotspots around the world while getting perks along the way. Most recently we launched a first of its kind experience that brings our world class membership rewards programme to life in Uber, a mobile app connecting riders to drivers.
Which festival events are you most looking forward to? The 300 Seconds event is something I have a real passion for as it showcases the diverse expertise of women speakers working in digital and technology. Offering mentoring from experienced speakers it encourages women to build skills and confidence and to present in public. There’s something for everyone this year, with so many exciting and creative events taking place across the city throughout September. It promises to be a great celebration of digital culture.

SPRUNG DIGIDARES YOU
MY ROBOT COMPANION
THE MEASURES TAKEN
A fun and accessible trail around the city that will get you doing dares and taking photos and videos using the Mapfactor app, which has been developed by SprungDigi, an artist crew of young adults with learning disabilities. The day begins with a briefing at Lighthouse, and continues on to the streets of Brighton, leaving marvellous mayhem in its wake. This event is suitable for disabled and non-disabled people of all ages.
An Afternoon with HARR1. How would you feel about a robot caring for you? How do you imagine a future where your relatives would be cared for by robots? Would robot companions aid or increase feelings of loneliness? Join Lorenza Ippolito, Anna Dumitriu and Alex May in conversation to investigate the philosophical and practical questions involving the potential future of social robotics.
Rising star of British choreography, Alexander Whitley – a South Bank Award nominee 2014 and Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate – brings the Royal Opera House-commissioned The Measures Taken to BDF. A joint work with digital artists Marshmallow Laser Feast, the piece is visually striking and kinetically charged. An exploration of our relationship with technology, it is rooted in collaboration – a dialogue between movement and the digital world.

LOOPTOPIA: SNEAK PREVIEW
DOTS. CONNECTING IDEAS
I DREAM OF WIRES
Looptopia is a new breed of multiplayer creative app, where thousands of users can collaborate in real time. You can listen to other users’ tunes and compose a tune of your own with no musical training required. Each piece of music becomes a permanent feature of the landscape, as Looptopia gets filled with beautiful melodies. Looptopia is open for a public beta throughout September before the official launch on the 27th, at which they promise “a night of music, decadence, and digital wonder”.
Innovation happens when things are brought together in fresh ways. Ideas from outside of your field can make a profound impact when brought into step with existing practice. Dots is a conference about sharing and celebrating ideas that have been created by new connections, as well as the people who join them together. Be inspired by speakers including the head of creative agency partnerships at Google, “The Internet of Things” designer, the creative director of gov.uk and 10 more extraordinary innovators.
From costing as much as a detached house (hello, Fairlight CMI) to becoming near trash, synthesizers have had a fascinating past. With a live introduction by Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire, I Dream Of Wires is a hugely entertaining new documentary about the demise and resurgence of these temperamental beasts. Synth heroes such as Gary Numan, Carl Craig and Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor demonstrate their systems and show why they choose to use this volatile yet rewarding technology.

LIGHTHOUSE @ #BDF14 The central theme running through Lighthouse’s programme, Visibility Is A Trap, is a visceral response to the tension between the tendency to share our lives in public, and our desire and right for more privacy. Our programme brings together an international community of artists, thinkers and makers, to share and experience groundbreaking art and ideas of the present. From Jordan to Sweden, the Netherlands to Iraq, and Russia to the UK, this year’s band of critical creatives shares an ethos and an energy to play with the present and make for the future. At our annual conference Improving Reality, artists Holly Herndon, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Jananne Al-Ani and Susan Schuppli will reflect on the unexpected effects of technology: leading thinkers Nathan Jurgenson, Metahaven and John Armitage will look under the hood of social media; cultural advocate and whistleblower Nadia El-Imam will reveal new patterns. Our major exhibition will present the timely work Newstweek – Fact Fixing Bureau by critical engineers Julian Oliver and Danja Vasiliev in a new installation. Newstweek switches the power balance between news organisations and citizens, giving visitors to the installation the chance to manipulate the facts or just troll for the ‘lulz’. The work blatantly shines a searchlight on the vulnerability of the new informational ecosystem of journalism, and questions, importantly, how we use our devices and media in our daily lives. Other highlights include Popathon Hack Jam; demos and prototypes of web-native storytelling for filmmakers, technologists and designers; and a rare sound performance by Chris Watson (BBC Natural History Unit/Cabaret Voltaire) for the launch of the new app by The Nimbus Group.

ARTS AND TECH COMMISSIONS
LAURENCE HILL ARTISTS ADVISOR, BRIGHTON DIGITAL FESTIVAL @LAURENCEHILL
From small domestic robots to big questions about how future historians will ‘read’ our present. Showing in empty shops, the streets, galleries – even in unused spaces, public spaces, online spaces – the six arts and tech commissions for the 2014 festival offer fascinating insight into the state of digital art right now. Hidden Lines is a kinetic video and light installation by Oliver Hein that will bring to life an empty shop space in the heart of the city, creating a moment of poetry and light for passersby. In Revolution #10, sound artist, Joseph Young, takes to the streets of Brighton with a sound installation – a collage of recordings of the people of the city creating their own community manifesto in the run up to next year’s elections.
The New Digital Architects is a project by speculative designers Marcel Helmer and Henrik Nieratschker, exploring the idea that with our present increasingly mediated by machines, future historians may only find limited material from our current society. Shrinking Space: Mind’s Eye takes the audience on a walk through the solar system, guided by interviews with space engineers and technicians working on ‘live’ missions such as Rosetta, the first mission to chase, orbit and land a probe on a comet. In Undercurrent, a new work by Natalie Kane and Coralie Gourguechon, a wall of paper speakers responds to the movement of visitors by playing the ‘hidden’ sounds of our every day – among them the hum of computer fans and the steady tick of servers. Interstice is a work by Alex Peckham – a transparent, luminous sculpture creating a melody based on the human genome that would take centuries to play to the end. Where Interstice is about life and its finite nature, a second new work being made in response to it is about the infinite, about space.

LIVING IN THE NETWORK DIGITAL IS REPLACING ANALOGUE ON ALMOST EVERY LEVEL. AS #BDF14 COMES ROUND WE’RE STARTING TO ASK TOUGHER QUESTIONS - HAVE WE BEEN NAIVE? JEREMY KEITH OF CLEARLEFT
A digital festival is an odd thing. What kind of event qualifies for inclusion in a digital festival? What exactly does “digital” mean? As with the infamous Supreme Court ruling on obscenity, “digital” can best be described as “I know it when I see it.”
we humans still crave the opportunity to gather together in the same physical space Even a few years ago, it would have been easier to demarcate the line that separates the digital from everything else; if it starts life in a computer, then it’s digital. These days, that’s not a very useful distinction. There’s very little around us that didn’t start life in a computer—even the solid, tangible objects that we think of as being “analogue”. As with digital, so with the network. There was a time when the internet was a separate place. You went online. Now the internet pervades all our activities. There is decreasing separation between online and offline. And, as with digital, there is very little in the world around us that hasn’t been touched by the network at some point.
If we were to have had a digital festival during the last decade, it would have been an overwhelmingly positive—perhaps even naive—affair. New tools, new creative opportunities, whole new publishing platforms with wonderfully low barriers to entry; what’s not to love? But the past few years have brought unwanted consolidation to the network—what Bruce Sterling refers to as “the stacks”—Facebook, Google, Apple, the giants of the digital world, wielding immense, unchecked power. The truth revealed by Edward Snowdon is that the same digital tools that can amplify creativity and personal expression are also being used as weapons of mass surveillance. It’s still our network, but now it feels a little less like a playground and a little more like a panopticon. It’s this new digital world that will be explored by the digerati speaking at the dConstruct conference—always a highlight of the Brighton Digital Festival. Writers like Warren Ellis and Cory Doctorow will be tackling the theme of this year’s dConstruct, “Living With The Network.” It will be thought provoking, perhaps even a little frightening. But it will also be entertaining. There’s going to be plenty of entertainment on offer throughout the festival. Whether it’s urban games played through mobile phones, hands-on hacking at Maker Faire, art installations, dance performances, concerts, workshops, or slash fiction readings, there’s something for everyone this year. Perhaps there really isn’t much point in trying to define what “digital” means. As William Gibson said, the thing our descendants will find most quaint and old-fashioned about us is the trouble we still take to make that distinction, between the digital and the “real.”
Even if we can’t define the damn thing, the Brighton Digital Festival is still a cause for celebration. For all the wonders and benefits that the network has brought us, we humans still crave the opportunity to gather together in the same physical space. When that physical space happens to be in the vibrant seaside town of Brighton… well then, all the better!
that distinction, between the digital and the “real.” Whether it’s the historical surroundings of the Brighton Dome and the Old Market, co-working spaces like The Skiff, arts venues like Phoenix Brighton, or community spaces like Lighthouse and 68 Middle Street, Brighton has a wealth of wonderful venues for us to gather in this September. As much as I like living my life on the internet, I’m grateful that I also live in Brighton. It’s the perfect place for a digital festival …whatever that means.

The Brighton Digital Festival is a celebration of the digital world, but it’s also a celebration of Brighton. So we brought together three of the city’s most successful companies in the digital sector to examine the landscape of Brighton and give their insight into the fusion that the city encourages between digital business and creative enterprise.

×× What makes Brighton such a strong hub for digital, creative, and tech companies?
×× Is Brighton’s rich cultural landscape a benefit for attracting young talent?
ww A bi: I would say that the fact that Brighton is such a creative and diverse place with excellent links to universities, is a key reason that Brighton is a strong digital hub. We also have a vibrant community that shares knowledge and meets up regularly which helps to attract like for like companies. Finally you have a history of digital events such as BrightonSEO, UX Brighton, the BDF and Brighton Digital Marketing Festival, which brings people down from London.
ww Abi: Of course. Creative people want knowledge and culture to inspire them, both in and outside of the workplace. They want to work with other like-minded and talented people in a buzzing city where there is plenty to do.
ww Anthony: I think it comes down to concentrated diversity. We’re a small city with an intense mix of people with different outlooks, backgrounds and skills. Someone called Brighton a “culture of extremes” – politically it sways from Tory to Green, while in arts the Brighton Early Music Festival happens even as new indie bands pioneer new sounds. Radical new ideas and businesses thrive here.
It is eccentric, diverse, experimental, artistic and tolerant
@PUPPA ww Katja: Aside from its proximity to the sea, beach life, and living in a city people visit to holiday and end up staying, Brighton has a deep personality which is conducive to creative and progressive minds. It is eccentric, diverse, experimental, artistic and tolerant. It is also compact, so everyone talks to each other. You can connect and bump into people very easily.

Brighton needs faster broadband for all ww Katja: We have several universities and colleges, and proof is that graduates stay on. We also have some cool ambassadors for Brighton who live here, Fatboy Slim, Nick Cave and Julie Burchill amongst others.
×× What are the most important factors in ensuring Brighton continues to support local industry? ww Abi: Talent is key and with the cost of commuting on the rise, businesses have to work twice as hard if they are looking for talent from London. We need to make sure that there are strong links with universities and local industry so the talent that is grown here stays local. ww Anthony: Also Brighton needs faster broadband for all. Local and central government should be challenging monopolistic and bureaucratic instincts of big telcos. Recently my home broadband was at least ten times faster than BT could offer my office in the centre of Brighton. Action is needed. ww K atja: Affordable housing is extremely important, or wages need to be higher to reflect how expensive it is to live here. More central Brighton office spaces would be helpful. There needs to be a drive to put Brighton on the map globally.
Independently organised events are at the heart of Brighton Digital Festival and have always included a strong education strand within the programme – events and workshops engaging with the public, and utilising digital technologies to enable new ways of learning. Digital music tools, 3D printing, games development and design, and animation have all been used to engage and inspire young learners, alongside idea generation and start-up culture, architecture and urban prototyping, and video and film making.
DONNA COMERFORD DIGITAL EDUCATION COORDINATOR, BRIGHTON DIGITAL FESTIVAL
ww Anthony: Oh yes, and for attracting older talent too. Culture in all its forms can be found here. In the arts, science, technology, sport and politics, there are so many people exploring new ideas. Proximity to the oddness of Sussex culture – hello Lewes! – and the global powerhouse of London also add to its cultural life.

GRASSROOTS FUND 2014 The Brighton Digital Festival brings together two of the most significant characteristics of the city – the vibrant arts and creative community and the thriving digital and tech sector. But for me it is the Grassroots programme that most reflects the city. The range and reach of the projects is impressive especially given the limited resources requested: the creators range from high concept artists to educators to cooperatives and associations. The target participants include young people, women and the over 60s. It’s a timely reminder of what can be achieved given scant resources but imagination and collaboration.
